Fathers are so important to a family, a community, and each of us. Most fathers are chosen for us biologically, but some of us have been gifted a bonus dad—a father figure—and these are very special men. Fathers come in all shapes and sizes, provide stability and protection, and guide us in many ways.
What difference does the dad in your life make? What do you do to thank and appreciate him? What are his unique and special talents? Once a year, we take a day to really reflect on that—what he means to us, what he means to the family, and what he means to this life.
I have an incredible father. He’s smart, charming of course, funny, and wise beyond measure. The special quality in my dad is that he represents a judge’s scales. He always does and says what is most fair, most balanced, and most right. He gives great advice because he can see the world through a mechanical, emotional, logical, or serious lens. He is very, very flexible and wants the best for us.
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children and those he calls his.
We hope you enjoy reading about some of the father figures in our community in the pages of this issue.
Happy Father's Day!

“A year after my surgery I was still experiencing pain and numbness. Physical therapy had helped to a point, but I still wasn't able to resume my normal training without aggravating my back and being forced to limit my activity. Dr. Mitchell and his team immediately identified the problem areas and came up with a treatment plan. After the first visit, I had significant relief and have seen continuous improvement since then.”

Enjoying an evening at the theatre does not mean you need to travel to New York City and Broadway. Residents of the Valley of the Sun have a unique entertainment venue right here in the heart of North Peoria/Arrowhead.
Located in the high-traffic area of Arrowhead and P83 (adjacent to the Peoria Sports Complex), the Arizona Broadway Theatre, or ABT (AZBroadway.org), offers a total entertainment experience—a one-of-a-kind venue combining quality dining and professional theatre all in one spot.
The passion and power behind ABT belong to founders Kiel Klaphake and his wife, Cassandra. After living for years in New York City due to its prime location for theatre performances, the couple grew tired of the hustle and bustle found in big city life.
Following the tragic events of 9/11, the couple decided they’d had enough and wanted to make a big change. Packing up and heading
west, they arrived in Peoria in 2002 with a new destiny and dream on their minds.
“The decision to put down roots in Peoria came after exhaustive research and planning that included identifying markets with tremendous population growth and year-round seasonal opportunity, as well as proximity to a robust retirement community filled with entertainment and art-seeking patrons,” says Kiel Klaphake.
The couple created the Arizona Broadway Theatre concept and model from their own creative life experiences.
“Professional theatre is what we know and who we are,” explains Klaphake. Their experiences with performing on stage for various organizations helped them put together the concept. The pair dreamed of producing high-caliber professional theatre and pulled inspiration from several places to bring the entire idea to fruition.
For the pair, the vision and goal of ABT has always been to deliver a complete entertainment experience for an array of audiences in a one-of-a-kind venue.
“We wanted to provide patrons with a unique, elite dining experience that, combined with unforgettable performances, creates a top-tier entertainment venue,” explains Klaphake.
The building opened on January 3, 2006. It features the main theatre, a 3,000-square-foot kitchen, a welcoming lobby and bar, a multi-purpose banquet space known as The Encore Room, and costume shops.
ABT is also meant to be a spot for performers and others in the theatre industry to explore their creativity or practice their specialty craft.
“We have an immense love for the world of performing arts and wanted to take our experiences and create a strong community in the West Valley,” adds Klaphake.
ABT is nationally recognized, hiring both local and national talent. They hold auditions multiple times a year. Cassandra and her casting team also travel to New York City several times yearly to audition talent for the musical theatre seasons.
Arizona Broadway Theatre is also known for giving back to the community that has given so much to them. As a non-profit, the theatre has various educational resources designated for youth and others in the local community.
“We feature a number of free Master Class opportunities, which are led by professionals from directors and actors to scene designers and costume designers,” shares Klaphake.
Another point of pride for the team is how they focus on community engagement programs and opportunities. They offer volunteer opportunities at the theatre, including ushers, door greeters, lobby decorating during the holidays, and more.
“Our community is what kept us alive during the pandemic and is what continues to keep the theatre healthy and thriving,” says Klaphake.
Scene from Sweeney ToddThe opportunities for the community are aimed at more than just adults, as they offer several programs for Valley youth.
“We pride ourselves in creating a learning space for emerging local talent,” explains Klaphake. “Many young performers from our Education Programs have taken their first professional bows on stage alongside seasoned New York veteran actors. The practical training they receive and the ability they are offered to observe these established actors is invaluable to creating the next wave of talent.”
The Academy for Young Performers offers summer musical theatre camps for kids ages 7 to 16. There is also a performance troupe, HyRey, an audition-only singing and dancing group for teens aged 13 to 19. The HyRey troupe performs in the Valley and California each summer.
For younger community members, the Theatre for Young Audience has performances geared towards the younger crowd to give them a taste of their first theatre shows.
The fun continues as theatre patrons have many options outside the stage and the dinner shows. ABT hosts various community events to bring in different audiences throughout the year.
“In the Encore Room, we host Music & Mimosas Sunday brunches featuring local musical artists. We also present Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre shows. Free After-Dark Cabarets are a big hit
with the community as they showcase our talent onstage (and sometimes even backstage!). These take place monthly in the lobby after an evening performance,” adds Klaphake.
In addition, the theatre team offers its ABT concert series, featuring a variety of tribute bands, including those paying homage to the likes of Aretha Franklin, ABBA, The Eagles, and more. These are held on various Monday evenings throughout the year since those are the only nights they do not have other musical performances.
The current season at ABT finishes big with three more shows: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, based on the 1988 film starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine; The Wizard of Oz; and finally, Disaster!, a new musical comedy featuring many of your favorite disco music hits.
The new 2023-24 season has already been announced, kicking off in October with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, followed by White Christmas, On the Town, the regional premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Disney’s The Little Mermaid , and concluding with Clue: the Musical , based on the board game.
Full-season subscriptions are available now, with Flex Subscriptions opening soon. Single-show tickets go on sale in August 2023.
“We wanted to provide patrons with a unique, elite dining experience that, combined with unforgettable performances, creates a top tier entertainment venue.”

Mango salsa is easy to make, made with fresh ingredients, and goes well with a variety of dishes. Serve it up with fresh tortilla chips, use it on a taco or salad, or top off that grilled salmon or steak. Enjoying this fruity salsa with shrimp will transport you to the Caribbean. This recipe makes about 3-4 cups (depending on the size of your mangos).
• 3 ripe mangos, peeled, pitted, and diced (about 2 cups)
• ½ cup red onion, finely diced
• 1 red bell pepper, cored, seeds removed and finely diced (about ¾ cup)
• 1 jalapeño, seeded and finely diced
• 1/4 cup cilantro leaves, finely chopped
• 1 lime, juiced
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
1. In a large serving bowl, combine the prepared mango, bell pepper, onion, cilantro, and jalapeño. Drizzle with the juice of one lime and sprinkle in the sea salt. Stir everything together until combined.
2. Let the salsa rest for 10 minutes for the flavors to blend together.

Nissan Z has been defining and redefining sports cars since 1969. Today, Nissan brings a powerful engine into a stylish sports car that lets you carve up the road, powering through curves with the g-forces pushing you back in the leather sport seat.
UNDER THE HOOD
The Nissan Z thrill is real thanks to the 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6. The aluminum alloy block keeps the car lightweight. Optical turbo speed sensors power the turbines up to 240,000 rpm. The 6-speed manual features SynchroRev Match that “blips” the throttle to the ideal engine rpm for smooth downshifts. The 9-speed auto features Downshift Rev Matching with the GT-R paddle shifters.
Performance is everything in the Nissan Z. Mechanical limited-slip differential helps distribute power to the driven wheel, letting you power out of corners. An aluminum double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension with monotube shocks give split-second responses. For the first time in a Nissan Z, the 2023 Performance includes electric power steering that still allows a firm, direct feel. Combine all that with performance tires on 19” forged alloy rims, and you have power where you want it.
That performance is available in driver-selectable modes on models with the 9-speed automatic transmission. You can set out on the morning commute with the Standard Mode. Then, when you’re ready to kick up the fun, switch to Sport Mode for quicker shifts, a more responsive throttle, firmer steering effort, and sport stability-control settings.
The cockpit in the new 2023 Nissan Z puts control at your fingertips. The 12.3” digital dashboard lets you choose from three screens. The Normal Mode simulates an analog speedometer and tachometer, with navigation and entertainment in the center. The Enhanced Mode enlarges the center display to improve your viewing of navigation and entertainment. The Sport Mode places the tachometer in the center with an upshift indicator and readouts for turbo boost and g-force.
You’ll love the Nissan Z legacy feature of the triple pod cluster. Each of the dials angles toward you, offering information on turbo boost, turbine speed, and voltage.
Performance meets comfort with features such as a sliding console lid and a dedicated place to store your smartphone. The performance seats use an anti-slip material and a slide-reducing center pad. There are even padded knee bolsters for those tight corners.
The 2023 Nissan Z connected technology is unparalleled. The 9” touch-screen display features advanced infotainment. Connect via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi Hotspot to stay in touch wherever you travel.
Nissan Door-to-Door Navigation features 3D building graphics and seamless turn-by-turn directions. You can even get walking directions back to your Z after parking.
The 2023 Nissan Z Performance includes the 8-speaker Bose Premium Audio system and advanced technology reduces interior noise.
SAFETY
You don’t have to sacrifice safety in the Z. You’ll have the assurance of Automatic emergency braking, intelligent cruise control, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and more.

Our West Valley heroes, firefighters, and law enforcement are among some of the most dedicated residents. For firefighters, the rigors of the everyday job require them to stay on top of their physical fitness, including having the ability to run up stairs, climb ladders, and carry dozens of pounds of equipment and possibly people.
Local firefighter Jon Binsbacher, who has been with Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical for nearly 20 years, is currently serving as a Captain and Paramedic, and understands fitness is a main facet of his daily world.
“My fitness regimen has changed over the years, but I’ve consistently had some sort of regimen to follow,” says Binsbacher, adding he remains committed to being active as much as possible.
“Now, at 51 years old, it consists of hiking, mountain biking, light weight training, and occasional yoga. I love getting out on the trails here in Peoria and throughout the North Valley. I typically average 5 to 6 days a week and at least 30 minutes a day,” says Binsbacher.
His physical fitness goals and activity aren’t just for his own benefit. He knows there are a lot of people who rely on him to be as healthy as possible.
“Professionally, I am obligated to my fellow firefighters and the residents of the communities we serve to be physically fit,” explains Binsbacher. “Whether it’s fighting a house or wildland fire, hiking up a mountain for mountain rescue, or working in a hazmat suit, it’s all physically demanding. I’m more effective overall if I’m physically prepared.”
However, Binsbacher also understands his own personal goals are just as important.
“My motivation for staying fit is enjoying an active lifestyle with my children and grandchildren as long as possible,” Binsbacher remarks. “I also want to enjoy many healthy retirement years with my wife and family long after the job.”
Physical fitness isn’t just for firefighters. If you are like many of our residents, you’re looking for tips and insights on either getting started with a daily exercise regimen or increasing your daily activity.
We asked Jon Binsbacher to share some pointers.
It’s okay to start slowly. At the end of the day, the important thing is that you exercise.
The “why power” inside you is stronger than your mental and physical willpower. Know why you want to exercise and get fit.
Health and wellness start from the inside out, consisting of emotional, spiritual, and physical conditioning.
Your body deserves quality food. As they say, “You are what you eat.”
Music has always been important to Arizona native, Marcus Tinsley, 31. As a teen in Glendale, Tinsley played at a local coffee shop singing covers for family, friends, and “whoever happened to be getting coffee.” From there, Tinsley started a band and released an album. But as a young husband and father, the road to rock stardom wasn’t as harmonious as he’d hoped. Internal differences caused him to leave the band and put his musical aspirations aside. Years later, a sweet moment caught on camera with his daughter reignited his passion for music and even took him to American Idol in 2021! We sat down with Tinsley to learn more about his melodic journey.
HOW DID YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC BEGIN?
Like most artists, my musical journey started alone with just me and my guitar. I was 15 years old, and I would spend hours locked in my room watching YouTube videos of other artists, trying to mimic what they were playing.
got a video of it and posted it online. A year later, we got a call from a few TV shows, including “The Ellen Show,” because the video went viral. After that, we started posting more duets of Disney songs, which in the end, rekindled my love for music. However, there was still an unsettling feeling in our stomachs about returning to the music business again due to our past experience. There is a common mindset that puts being rich and famous above everything else because that’s what happens when you “make it big.” That mindset can tear relationships apart. Being able to see this from the outside, we decided that we would pursue music, but as a family.

We were recently asked to suggest the Best Bourbon under $150 and as I reflected on my list of favorites, providing a single answer wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared.
Think of it like this. If we asked 100 people in our community what their favorite restaurant is—the answers would be varied based on the individual’s personal palate or even the moment you asked them in!
Here is our list of favorites that will have you covered at any price point and occasion.
Blanton’s is recognizable on sight due to the round bottle with a brass horse and jockey for a stopper. Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon.
— BlantonsBourbon.com ($100-$150)
In a sea of cask-strength offerings, Basil Hayden’s stays true to its 80 proof roots. The high rye content of its mash bill charges the nose and palate with notes of caraway and spice, while 10 years in the barrel have added leather and an attractive nuttiness. If you aren’t looking for high proof, this is a remarkable bourbon.
— BasilHaydens.com ($75-$100)
Pinhook pulls 150 barrels from a special lot to create this straight bourbon whiskey with a lively nose of butterscotch,
cinnamon stick, licorice, and vanilla. These aromas set the stage for a robust palate of cherry, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and chicory. With the additional 5th year of age, what was tropical fruit transitions to darker fruit flavors and what was brighter candy is now rich and caramelized; hints of smoke now start to appear for the first time.
— PinhookBourbon.com ($75-$50)
Eagle Rare 10 Year lives somewhat in the shadow of its 17-yearold elder sibling, but don’t let that shy you away. This is a sweet and mellow bourbon with definite signs of maturity and its orange peel and toffee aromas are a little shy, but the palate serves sturdy sweet and spice notes and a toasty finish.
— EagleRare.com ($30-$50)
While others in Old Forester’s impressive lineup claim the hearts of bourbon geeks (such as the 1920 Prohibition Style), this bottle stands head and shoulders above everything at this proof and price point. It oozes aromatic charm and follows with a palate that is lithe but in no way lacking flavor.
— OldForester.com ($20-$30)
Sometimes you find a $20 laying around or just need a good mixing bourbon. Benchmark Old No. 8 is made at the same distillery as Blanton’s and the ever-coveted Pappy Van Winkle! The nose bears caramel notes with a delicate stone-fruit backdrop. A robust and sturdy palate with some fine leather notes mingling with dry tobacco, a touch of oak, and a hint of dried cherries. The finish is smooth and calming.
— BuffaloTraceDistillery.com (Under $20)
What do you buy for the man who has everything? Perhaps an experience oriented around what dads value most— time together —is just what he needs. Fathers and father figures are invaluable in our lives. They help shape and mold us. They’re there for us and support us. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Dad feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your dad, husband, brother or father figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Axe-throwing venues are still going strong across the country. Make an evening of it and practice your throwing skills!
If some of Dad’s role models include Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay, consider thinking outside the box and create a meal with something you wouldn’t usually go for like bison burgers or grilled octopus tentacles. Tackling a complex recipe may seem challenging but the memories and the meal will be worth it.
Find a local trail you haven’t tried before, load up the bikes and set out for a day of riding. Finish off the day with a nice meal out after all your hard work.
Dig a hole in your backyard and have Dad help the kids gather items around the house (like a current newspaper or flyers) and put them in a waterproof bag.
