LIFESTYLE LETTER

Gratitude

In this season of gratitude, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving encourages us to slow down, embrace the present, and appreciate the people and moments that bring us joy.

This month, I’ve been especially grateful for the small, everyday moments that make life beautiful: the laughter of loved ones, quiet mornings with a cup of coffee and my devotional or book, enjoying a moment in the backyard at sunset with my husband, enjoying time with my dog, Zoe and the chance to be part of such a vibrant community here in New Braunfels.  Every morning I take a gratitude walk and thank God for the little and big things I am so grateful for.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, giving back, and celebrating the people and organizations that make New Braunfels such a special place. We’re endlessly thankful for our advertising partners, whose support allows us to bring inspiring stories to your doorstep each month, and for the readers who make it all worthwhile.

As we prepare to gather with loved ones, let’s take a moment to reflect on what truly brings meaning to our lives. This holiday season, may we find contentment not in possessions or accolades but in the connections we nurture and the good we do for others.

Wishing you and your family a season of gratitude and grace,

November 2025

CARING SENIOR SERVICE

HOW CARING SENIOR SERVICE TURNS CARE INTO CONNECTION AND NEW MEANING

CIRCLE OF CARE

“THE HELP CAN BRING PEACE OF MIND.”

Caring Senior Service keeps one thing front and center. Most people want to stay at home. Cathy started Caring Senior Service with that in mind, creating a team that offers nonmedical help with bathing, dressing, medication reminders, meal prep, light housework, rides and errands, and plain company. They also give families a break with respite and overnight support. What sets them apart is pairing warm, trained caregivers with tech tools. They partner with Pocket RN nursing support, a 24-hour virtual assistant, and AI monitoring that only flags health alerts and routine changes. Care can even be introduced gently — caregivers may come in professional everyday clothes so a client sees a friend, not a stranger.

Dining & Entertainment

Joe’s story shows how deep that care can go. Joe cared for his wife Annie through the slow, hard days of dementia. When it became too much, Caring Senior Service stepped in and provided round-the-clock help until Annie passed. The team stayed with her in those last months. That steady support gave Joe space to take some time for himself and to find a new way forward.

He stayed close to the caregiver who had helped them. Then he made a quiet, powerful choice. He joined the team. Now Joe drives clients to appointments, plays cards with those who want company, and brings small comforts that

matter. In a few months, he has helped several people. He also takes part in the caregiver training program so he could learn how best to help. As Lara put it, "it kind of came full circle for him." For Joe, the work brings new purpose and a way to give back to the people and community who helped his family.

Another story speaks to long-term bonds. CSS cared for a man for 14 years. He was active in the New Braunfels community and hoped to reach 100 years. He passed at 99 in October, just before his birthday. Caregivers gathered for a memorial. They shared small, funny, stories about his antics. The agency had also cared for his ex-wife until she passed. These were not short jobs. They were relationships.

If families are tired, the advice is simple. Don’t wait. Try a few hours, a couple times a week. Let your loved one meet a caregiver as a friend. The help can bring peace of mind, steady routines, and a way for loved ones to stay at home where they want to be. Caring Senior Service brings care and heart to everything they do.

Keys to Kindness

THE RENFELD GROUP OPENS

DOORS TO BRIGHTER FUTURES

When you buy a home with The Renfeld Group, you’re not just finding the right address. You’re joining a bigger story. Shelby Renfeld and her team believe that real estate is about people first, not just transactions. Their motto, "Opening Doors to Better Lives," reflects their mission to serve others through both their work and their giving. Guided by the belief that “when you’re given much, you give much,” The Renfeld Group supports organizations that bring hope and comfort to the community. Each home sale helps provide meals for seniors, shelter for military families, and resources for students and teachers. It’s about more than closing on a house. It’s about opening hearts.

COMAL COUNTY SENIOR CITIZENS FOUNDATION

Aging should be joyful, not lonely. That’s why the Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation (CCSCF) has become a lifeline for older adults in the community. Their programs focus on four key areas: nutrition, fitness, education, and social connection. Every weekday, seniors gather for hot congregate meals, and for those who cannot leave home, Meals on Wheels ensures no one is forgotten. Last year alone, CCSCF provided more than 121,000 meals at no cost to seniors, veterans, and disabled adults.

But food is only the beginning. Seniors can join group exercise classes, enjoy live music on Fridays, play games with friends, or even head out on bus tours. For those with pets, AniMeals delivers food and helps with veterinary needs so beloved companions can stay healthy, too. These services do more than fill a calendar. They improve energy, self-esteem, and mental health, while reducing the risk of hunger and isolation. By partnering with CCSCF, The Renfeld Group helps

seniors stay active, independent, and connected, reminding them that they remain a vital and loved part of the community.

FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION

For military and veteran families, medical emergencies bring enormous stress. On top of the worry for their loved one, there are often heavy financial burdens from travel and lodging. Fisher House Foundation provides relief by building comfort homes located near major military and VA medical centers worldwide. Families stay free of charge in private suites with shared kitchens and cozy living areas, giving them both privacy and community during hard times.

The story of Fisher House began with Zachary Fisher, a builder and philanthropist who believed one person could make a difference. He and his wife, Elizabeth, committed more than $20 million to build the first houses. That single act of kindness has grown into a network of over 90 homes that have served more than half a million families. The Renfeld Group is proud to support Fisher House because it keeps families together when togetherness matters most.

HOMES WITH HEART

For Shelby Renfeld and her team, success is measured in more than awards or sales numbers. It’s about creating ripples of kindness in the community. Each home they help buy or sell touches lives beyond the front porch, reaching seniors who need a hot meal, veterans’ families who need a safe place to stay, and children who need school supplies. When you work with The Renfeld Group, you’re not just moving into a house. You’re helping build a better tomorrow, one family at a time.

“For us, success means more than awards or sales volumes. It’s about creating a ripple effect of good.”
- Shelby Renfeld

THANKFUL FOR OUR VETERANS

New Braunfels takes Veterans Day to heart, and there are many thoughtful ways to honor those who served beyond a meal out. This year, the city’s Veterans Day Parade & Ceremony is set for Saturday, November 8, 2025. Whether you grew up here or are visiting, a small act of thanks can have a big impact.

Ways to celebrate veterans in New Braunfels

• Attend a veteran event or volunteer. Showing up is powerful. This not only gives you a chance to give back, but also offers a way to connect with the veterans in the community.

• Visit the New Braunfels Veterans Memorial to leave a flag, a note, or a flower. Take a quiet moment to read names, reflect, and share the space with family.

• Observe a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. with your children. Use the moment to explain why November 11 matters and invite kids to ask questions about service and sacrifice.

Rachel turned a magazine into community.

City Lifestyle isn’t just a publication — it’s a pulse. A rhythm of voices, neighbors, and stories woven together by someone who believes in the power of connection. As we expand, we’re looking for people ready to turn care into community. Are you ready to be that spark?

NBTX City Lifestyle

H O P E

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
