I am honored to share our annual Gratitude Issue with you. Every year this edition reminds me why I love what we do: it gives us space to celebrate the people and organizations who are quietly, consistently making our community, and our world, better. Their stories are the heartbeat of this publication.

At the center of this issue is our Roots of Goodness feature, spotlighting neighbors and non profits whose generosity lifts others in meaningful, tangible ways. I think you’ll love meeting them, learning what fuels their work, and seeing how each of us can be part of that ripple effect.
Beyond that, you’ll find practical inspiration for everyday living and profiles that leave you cheering for what’s possible when we show up for one another. We also put together an unforgettable trip itinerary to Jackson Hole. If it’s not already on your bucket list, it will be after you turn those pages—the landscapes, the food, the adventure, the calm. It’s a breathtaking getaway you should plan to take!
As always, I want to say thank you. We are profoundly grateful for you - our readers - this season and all year long. Your notes, ideas, and loyal readership keep us accountable to excellence and rooted in purpose. And to our local business owners, thank you for believing in this mission and for advertising your incredible, heartfelt businesses with us. Your support quite literally makes each issue possible and helps us tell more good stories.
If you know a person or organization we should spotlight, please email us – your recommendations guide our storytelling and help us shine light where it’s deserved. We love hearing from you. Also, please follow us on IG @memoriallifestyle.
Sincerely,

KNOWN FOR ITS OUTSTANDING FRENCH CUISINE, CHEF AND OWNER PHILIPPE VERPIAND EXPLAINS WHAT MAKES ÉTOILE’S BOUILLABAISSE A MENU FAVORITE.
Étoile Cuisine et Bar opened in Houston’s Uptown Park in October 2012, bringing French cuisine to the city and earning recognition as one of Houston’s top French restaurants within months.
Owned by Master Chef of France Philippe Verpiand and Monica Bui, Étoile features two menus showcasing dishes made entirely in-house, including the bread and ice cream. La Tradition offers classic French dishes like coq au vin and foie gras au torchon, while La Saison highlights seasonal ingredients. One of the menu standouts, bouillabaisse, is an excellent dish for cozy fall evenings and is made with locally sourced fresh seafood.
Bouillabaisse is one of France’s signature dishes, but it has humble beginnings: it was created by fishermen in Marseille as a way to use up unsold fish. At Étoile, the broth is made with seafood stock, tomato, garlic, and saffron, all of which enhance the flavors of the seafood.
Chef Verpiand always uses grouper and snapper. The chef uses the heads and bones of the fish, which are loaded with
flavor, to make the seafood stock, and then the delicate filets are served in the dish. Gulf shrimp is always included as well, and then he adds other seasonally fresh seafood items.
To make the soup, Verpiand uses vegetable mirepoix, fresh thyme, dried bay leaves, and a few other secret spices (which he learned from his mom, an excellent home cook). The soup is simmered for two hours and then strained, and the liquid is used for the final dish. There is one other must for the dish: saffron potatoes. While the seafood and broth are the stars of the dish, there is no authentic bouillabaisse without saffron potatoes.
Rather than a roll or rustic sliced bread, at Étoile, Verpiand garnishes his bouillabaisse with a long crouton made from his made-from-scratch baguettes, topped with the rouille. Some guests like to scrape the aioli into the broth and mix it in, and others prefer to dip the aioli-topped crouton into the soup as they eat.

An iconic beauty partnership brings game day magic to Texas.

ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHARLOTTE TILBURY
When it comes to Texas-sized moments, it is hard to top a collaboration that combines beauty, sports, and a dose of Lone Star State glamour. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC), already fresh off the success of their hit Netflix series America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, are stepping up their game this season with makeup powerhouse Charlotte Tilbury.
Charlotte Tilbury, the global luxury beauty brand founded by Charlotte Tilbury MBE, announced its first US sports partnership with the DCC. It is a match that feels undeniable: the DCC are icons of performance and entertainment, while Tilbury's brand is known for confidence and transformation. Now the duo is bringing beauty to one of the country's biggest sports stages.
"Darlings, I am so thrilled to be the official beauty partner of the sensational, incredible, unstoppable Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders," Tilbury said. "They channel confidence, strength, and empowerment, and, just like me, they understand that makeup has the transformative power to change your energy, so you can live a life without limits and pursue your biggest and boldest dreams."
Over the years, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have evolved into more than just a football sideline act. With millions of fans worldwide, a history that spans decades, and now a hit television

show thanks to Netflix, they have redefined what it means to be cheerleaders. Their motto, "often imitated but never equaled," resonated instantly with Tilbury. "I always say innovate, never imitate, and dare to dream it, dare to believe it, dare to do it," she said. "That is why our first-ever sports partnership in the US is a winning match destined to inspire and excite millions."
This season, fans can look forward to Charlotte Tilbury touch-up stations at AT&T Stadium, giving fans a Texas-style gameday glam moment. Social media collaborations, appearances, and popups are also on the horizon, all designed to highlight the confidence-boosting connection between Tilbury and the DCC.
Charlotte Jones, co-owner and chief brand officer of the Dallas Cowboys, sees the collaboration as a natural fit. "The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and Charlotte Tilbury are both instantly recognizable, unapologetically authentic, and rooted in excellence," Jones said. "This first-of-its-kind partnership is not just about beauty products; it is about aligning with a brand that shares our values of empowerment, self-expression, and high
performance in all that we do. When women lift each other up, we do not just step; we leap into greatness."
Tilbury designed a signature "America's Sweethearts" look for the squad. The routine-proof style combines her Airbrush Flawless system for complexion, Pillow Talk shades for eyes, lips, and cheeks, and a touch of Hollywood glow wands. Mascara delivers the drama, while her Pillow Talk lip liner and lipstick seal the look with a polished finish.
"It is an effortlessly polished look that the girls can trust to perform as flawlessly as they do," Tilbury said. "And anyone can recreate it at home."
Performing in Texas weather means makeup has to work as hard as the 36 squad members themselves. "The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders often perform extensive routines in hot and humid

climates, so one of the most important things about their makeup is that it is hardworking and long-lasting, without the need for constant touch-ups," Tilbury explained. Her solution starts with Magic Cream to prep the skin, followed by her Airbrush Flawless Foundation, powder, and setting spray to lock in the look. The products are designed to resist sweat, humidity, and long days under stadium lights. "Whether it is at a halftime appearance or post-game celebration, the squad will be looking and feeling flawless," she said.
For Tilbury, their partnership is about exuding confidence and empowerment, which DCC and the makeup brand both embody.
"These women are athletes at the top of their game, demonstrating dedication, excellence, and innovation in everything they do," Tilbury said. "They exude such confidence, strength, and empowerment, and, just like me, they understand that makeup has the transformative power to change your energy and help you pursue your biggest dreams."
The partnership also combines two iconic brands led by hardworking women. Tilbury herself and Charlotte Jones of the Cowboys share a commitment to uplifting women. "She is one of the most visionary, prominent, and impactful women in American sports, and we share more than a name," Tilbury said. "We both share a passion for championing women and giving them a platform to inspire and empower themselves and millions of others around the world."
No only-in-Texas story would be complete without boots. Lucchese Bootmaker, the official boot of the Dallas Cowboys, recently unveiled a new collection that includes a boot inspired by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders themselves. The Gina in Crinkle Patent pairs sleek design with the signature Cowboys Star, a nod to the squad's enduring legacy. It is another way the DCC continues to influence culture, both on and off the field.
From boots to beauty, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are proving they can own any stage. And with Charlotte Tilbury's touch, America's Sweethearts are more dazzling than ever.

WGratitude may be one of the simplest ways to destress during uncertain times. Studies show that when people feel appreciated, they’re more likely to stay engaged and feel connected to those around them. Showing gratitude can brighten someone’s outlook, but it is often overlooked, even though it requires little time or effort. Even a small amount can go a long way toward boosting well-being. To see how this plays out in real life, we caught up with some of Houston’s busiest people to learn what they’re grateful for and how they weave it into their everyday routines.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR IN THE CITY OF HOUSTON ITSELF?
Every day, I feel grateful that my family and I get to live in a city where incredible art and culture are woven into the fabric of our lives—and truly matter to the people who live here. We at HGO live and breathe opera, but we also draw inspiration from all of Houston’s extraordinary cultural institutions.
WHO OR WHAT DO YOU FIND YOURSELF MOST CONSISTENTLY GRATEFUL FOR RIGHT NOW?
My main source of gratitude is the people who live here, Houstonians themselves. From the moment my family and I arrived, this community has embraced us with genuine warmth. It’s been so lovely to feel supported both professionally and as a parent, and that generosity reflects the spirit of philanthropy that sustains the world-class art we enjoy here.

Artist Relations Manager, Bayou City Art Festival
WHO OR WHAT DO YOU FIND YOURSELF MOST CONSISTENTLY GRATEFUL FOR RIGHT NOW?
As I just completed planning for the city’s largest art festival, I am grateful for the people I work alongside every day. The artists participating in the show are incredibly creative and inspiring. I’m extremely lucky to have the chance not only to experience their work firsthand, but also to share it with thousands of Houstonians.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER BUSY HOUSTONIANS WHO WANT TO PRACTICE GRATITUDE BUT DON’T FEEL THEY HAVE THE TIME?
There is always time; you have to find it. Find something you do every day for 15 minutes, and replace it with a gratitude practice. I replaced morning screen time with gratitude journaling and meditation, which helps me mentally throughout the day and has been a complete game-changer.

Executive Director, Urban Harvest
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER BUSY HOUSTONIANS WHO WANT TO PRACTICE GRATITUDE BUT DON’T FEEL THEY HAVE THE TIME TO DO SO?
Carve out small moments for yourself each day. Begin with morning reflection in the quiet, setting the tone for the day. At night, jot one line of gratitude, whether a kindness, a moment, or a story. Starting small makes it easier to grow these self-care habits into lasting, meaningful routines.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR IN THE CITY OF HOUSTON ITSELF?
I am a transplant to our great city. The last nine years have shown me what wonderfully kind, generous, and friendly Houstonians are. I have been welcomed by strangers, asked to join groups and collaboratives, and treated with love wherever I go. The diversity of people, neighborhoods, and cultures is invigorating. I am always excited about what the city has to offer.

Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market, Chairperson
WHERE DOES GRATITUDE NATURALLY FIT IN YOUR DAY?
Expressing gratitude is a natural part of my day. Taking time to share my appreciation with those around me helps me stay centered and happier. Expressing a ‘thank you’ or more profound sentiment reminds me of what truly matters and what is important to me.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR IN THE CITY OF HOUSTON ITSELF?
I am genuinely grateful for the commitment Houstonians share in supporting our remarkable art institutions, such as the Houston Ballet. Houston’s vibrant cultural scene makes it a dynamic and fulfilling place to live and work. As a Houston Ballet Guild member and one of the chairpersons at this year’s Nutcracker Market, I have dedicated myself to supporting the art of ballet and sharing it with others.

The valley of Jackson Hole has been drawing people to its awe-inspiring landscapes for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence shows that Indigenous people lived and hunted there as far back as 11,000 years, taking advantage of the abundant natural resources. In the early 19th century, fur trappers arrived hunting beaver furs and other pelts in hopes of making riches from the fur trade. As word spread, the valley began earning a reputation for both opportunities and beauty.
Today, those fortunes look very different. Instead of trapping and trading, travelers come for riches of another kind: mountain air, plentiful wildlife, and some of the country’s best alpine outdoor adventures. Each year, nearly two million visitors arrive in Jackson Hole, most from out of state, due to its proximity to both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. It has become a playground that is both wild and very accessible.
Galleries highlight the region’s arts scene, while a growing roster of restaurants offer local fare and globally influenced cuisine. Add in boutique shopping, wellness retreats, and luxury stays, and it’s clear that the same landscape that once sustained hunters and trappers now supports a style of living that blends outdoor adventure with elevated experiences.
Jackson Hole is a year-round gateway with breathtaking views and endless outdoor adventure, so it makes sense that a stay there should match the landscape’s grandeur. The Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole is nestled in the heart of the valley with easy access to Grand Teton National Park and a walkable distance to restaurants and attractions. With a range of rooms and suites, the property is minutes from world-class skiing in winter and scenic hiking or biking trails in warmer months. It is perfect for families excited to spend days outdoors, as well as for those who prefer the spa, poolside lounging, or slow mornings with stunning mountain views.
The resort has undergone a complete transformation over the past few years, with its newest feature being Steadfire Chop House . Drawing inspiration from the American West, the restaurant showcases locally sourced vegetables, seafood, and beef from Snake River Farms and Reminisce Angus Ranch. Guests can also choose from a variety of restaurant options across the property, from a speakeasy-style bar to a sleek Pan-Asian restaurant, ensuring that dining there is as memorable as the great outdoors.
Adventure is always within reach in Jackson Hole. From tackling Corbet’s Couloir, one of the steepest ski runs in North America, to spotting bears, wolves, and other wildlife, the region has experiences for every type of explorer.
The Four Seasons Resort makes exploring easy through its curated excursions, courtesy of its partnership with Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris. Guests can book half- or full-day outings led by naturalist guides into Grand Teton or Yellowstone National Park. As with all of the resort’s offerings, these tours come complete with everything guests need for the day, including meals, snacks, and binoculars for those can’t-miss panoramic views and up-close encounters.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a hub for year-round enjoyment. In the winter, it is all about hitting the slopes, while in the warmer months, a gondola ride delivers visitors to miles of hiking and biking trails. The resort is also home to the area’s only Via Ferrata experience. Adrenaline seekers can harness up for a high alpine private climbing adventure that involves getting vertical while traversing suspension bridges, ladders, and natural granite slabs. And no trip to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is complete without a scenic 12-minute tram ride to Corbet’s Cabin to enjoy freshly baked waffles at 10,000 feet.
For those who want to explore beyond the resort, Jackson Hole’s dining scene is worth the short walk or quick drive. In Teton Village, Il Villaggio Osteria brings Italy to the mountains with wood-fired pizzas, housemade pastas, and hearty fare that’s perfect after a hike or gondola ride.
Downtown, The Bistro, located inside The Cloudveil hotel, offers a European-inspired menu and extensive wine and cocktail list, making it a favorite for date night or a leisurely evening out. The menu features everything from carrot risotto and croque madame to classic dishes like burgers and pork chops. Both restaurants are part of the Fine Dining Restaurant Group, the team behind several of Jackson Hole’s most buzzy spots, including The Kitchen, Bin22, and Bodega. Each has a distinct personality, giving visitors plenty of ways to taste the town.

Claudia Barreda was born in Lima, Peru, educated in Australia and lived and worked in Mexico and a variety of cities in the U.S. before settling in Houston. All of those places helped shape the creative eye of the architect-designer who now works at the Laura U Design Collective. Claudia is the Houston Design District’s November Leaders In Design honoree.
“I always wanted to be a doctor and I started college as pre-med, but realized that was not for me. Growing up, I was always curious about houses and whenever we went to a new house, I would look at all of the details,” Claudia says. “My uncle was an architect and I watched him design homes, and I thought that one day I would design my own house.”
In Houston, Claudia has also worked for Mirador Group, Cannon Design and Brickman Design. Her frequent moves were made because her husband’s job required that they move around.
In each locale, she has appreciated its native materials. Here, she turns to Texas limestone, white oak and stucco. But she also values the durability of manmade materials such as wood-like exterior materials and aluminum cladding.
Now married and a mother of three, she studied architecture at Canberra University in Australia because her grandfather had been the Peruvian ambassador to Australia and she had a number of family members there. When the Shining Path guerillas brought violence to Peru, her father planned to move their family to Australia and sent Claudia there first for school.
It was there she gained respect for sustainability and passive building some 30 years ago. “My education had a big impact on being mindful about the environment and building things that are timeless. You make things with less waste and nothing trendy because you want it to last for a very long time.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
This year, Houston was selected as the largest market for their Dream Home campaign.
“Our goal is to raise $1.5 million with this campaign,” says Rebecca Levine, senior advisor. “All of the money raised will go to funding the mission of St. Jude to ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude,” explains Levine. “Each cancer treatment costs $450,000 per year, and children usually have multiple years of treatment. The Dream Home fundraiser will provide treatment for one child’s cancer battle.”
The 3,000-square-foot Dream Home, located in Northwest Houston, is built by Empire Homes at no cost. Tradespeople and suppliers have generously donated labor and materials for everything from the concrete to the flooring, ensuring that all proceeds will go towards childhood cancer treatment.
To purchase a $100 ticket, visit dreamhome.org or call (800) 303-4413. Only 15,000 tickets will be sold. The winner will have the option to move into the home, use it as an investment property, or sell the 4-bedroom house. The newly built home, along with other high-end prizes, will be given away live on FOX 26 Houston on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. dreamhome.org

Harris County Friends of the Library has played a central role in supporting and advocating for neighborhood branches. “A love of books and an appreciation of libraries as a community resource are the only requirements for being a Friend,” said President Fran Serena. Through fundraising events like the Spring Plant and Book Festival, the Buy-A-Book Program, and the Gently Used Book Shelves, the nonprofit continues to sustain area-libraries’ growth.
That growth is now being celebrated with Spring Branch Memorial Library’s 50th anniversary. First dedicated on November 22, 1975, the branch was built with strong community backing, replacing earlier locations dating back to 1950. What began

with 51,000 books has since expanded to more than 63,500 items, including a growing e-book collection.
“Over the years, our library has adapted to the ever-changing needs of our patrons,” said Jennifer Finch, branch manager. “We continue the vital role of promoting literacy while also providing welcoming community spaces and innovative programs.”
Longtime librarian Maria Madrid added, “The library has undergone significant changes, from the card catalog in 1975 to being fully automated today. The 50th anniversary is a big milestone indeed.”
The 50th Anniversary Open House will be Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 930 Corbindale Road. hcfol.org
For more than 30 years, the Spring Branch Education Foundation (SBEF) has worked to strengthen the connection between Spring Branch ISD and the community it serves. Through scholarships, campus grants, and funding for educational initiatives, the foundation invests directly in students’ futures.
“The Spring Branch Education Foundation was built on relationships,” said Cece Thompson, Executive Director. “That spirit of partnership, with the school district, with families, and with our community, has allowed us to grow and sustain our impact. At our core, we are about investing in students’ futures, and that clear purpose continues to inspire support year after year.”

One example of that support was seen at this year’s Style Show Luncheon, which sold out and raised more than $257,000. “The success of this year’s Style Show Luncheon demonstrates just how deeply our community believes in investing in Spring Branch ISD students, staff and schools,” Thompson said. “Raising more than $257,000 sends a clear message: education matters.”
Events like the luncheon, Thompson added, are about more than funding. “They create space for our community to connect around a shared purpose. It builds trust, strengthens relationships, and reminds us that we are all partners in helping SBISD students succeed.” sbef.springbranchisd.com

Bel Inizio, which means “beautiful beginning” in Italian, helps women build self-confidence and life skills through fitness. The Houston nonprofit partners with shelters and service agencies to guide participants through an eight-week program that ends with completing a 5K.
Executive Director Kendra Atkins first connected with the organization in 2017 while working in homeless services. “I was instantly drawn to the mission of the organization to empower women and began volunteering periodically,” she said. Even early on, she realized the impact of the program. “The women gained more confidence in themselves and, little by little, began making small changes in their diet and were more aware of their overall health.”
The program is designed to spark long-term change. “Most women who participate in our program have never exercised regularly and aren’t very health-conscious in terms of their nutrition choices,” said Atkins. “This gets them into the mindset of working towards a lifestyle shift.”
Atkins is also grateful for what Bel Inizio has been able to accomplish. “Over the past 15 years, we’ve served over 1200 participants across the greater Houston area with pretty limited resources,” she said. bel-inizio.org

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
