A Season of New Beginnings

There’s something about September that stirs a sense of fresh beginnings—no matter our age. The air almost begins to shift, football season kicks off, leaves start to drift down, and for so many, school bells ring again. Whether it’s a preschooler clutching a backpack twice their size or a college student settling into a dorm, this month is alive with possibility, anticipation, and change.

As we say farewell to the slower pace of summer, we welcome this new season with renewed energy—and maybe just a touch of nervous excitement. September reminds us that growth and transition are a part of every chapter, whether we're starting a new job, tackling new goals, or simply taking a moment to refocus.

We hope this issue sparks that same sense of inspiration in you. With this edition’s theme, “Style,” we’re shining a spotlight on the unique flair of our community—featuring hometown residents, a trusted dentist and doctor, and our “McLean Chic” boutique. From these uplifting local stories to joyful community moments, every page is a celebration of how McLean and Great Falls are growing, thriving, and embracing the season ahead.

Thank you for continuing to welcome us into your home. It is our great joy to bring stories that spark curiosity—whether you're five and flipping through colorful pages, or ninety-five and keeping up with all that's happening around town. It’s an honor to celebrate this extraordinary community with you.

Warmest wishes for a meaningful September,

MCLEAN CHIC

INSIDE THE WHIMSICAL WORLD OF THE PREPPY PINK PONY

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY YANKEL POLAK

Nestled in the heart of McLean, The Preppy Pink Pony is more than a boutique—it’s a local institution, a carefully curated experience that feels like stepping into the most charming chapter of a Southern storybook. At its center is Virginia Kennedy: a former attorney turned tastemaker, whose journey from the back of a horse show box truck to boutique owner is as colorful as the monogrammed gifts lining her store’s shelves. “I wish I could say there was a master plan,” Kennedy laughs, recounting how the boutique began out of necessity and needlepoint. With her daughter competing in horse shows nearly every weekend, Kennedy filled the long hours by creating custom saddle pads and belts. That small, handcrafted start grew into a tiny booth—and eventually, a thriving business beloved by the McLean community. From Saddle Pads to Stationery The Preppy Pink Pony found its name in Kennedy’s daughter’s passions: preppy style, a love of pink, and—of course—ponies. “It just stuck,” she says. The store evolved from equestrian gear to a full-on lifestyle boutique offering gifts, clothing, custom stationery, wedding invitations, CONTINUED >

and home accents, all wrapped in a bright, cheerful aesthetic that Kennedy describes as “classic, layered, and personal.” Her philosophy? “I don’t carry anything I wouldn’t use myself.” Every product is personally tested—E. Newton jewelry is worn daily by Kennedy; linens are washed and rewashed at home before hitting the shelves. That rigorous process ensures everything she stocks is not only beautiful but durable and thoughtfully sourced.

A Boutique That Feels Like ‘Cheers’ Walk into The Preppy Pink Pony and it’s immediately clear that it’s more than just a shopping destination—it’s a gathering spot. “It’s kind of like the bar from Cheers,” Kennedy says. “People walk in and see someone they haven’t seen in three years—and they just reconnect.” This warmth isn’t accidental. Kennedy and her small team make it a point to balance approachability with privacy, helping customers when asked and knowing when to let them explore.

“Style SnapshotNeutral or bold palettes? Bold! Preppy staple? Monogrammed everything Summer style must-have?
A breezy linen dress”

“Some people want help finding a gift, some just want to browse. You learn to read the room.” She also makes time for more involved experiences, like custom wedding invitations or baby gifts, with consultations scheduled before or after hours.

“Custom doesn’t mean expensive,” she insists.

“It just takes a little more time.” Curated With Integrity—and a Little Sparkle While Kennedy doesn’t chase trends, she’s not afraid to evolve.

Recently, she added new brands like E. Newton and expanded her baby section, which includes cult-favorite towels by Three Marthas and plush gifts from Bunnies by the Bay. “I swear every baby in McLean has one,” she jokes. Advice for Your Own Preppy Chic Want to recreate the Pony aesthetic at home? Kennedy’s biggest tip: “Only have things you love.” She encourages layering patterns, injecting a pop of unexpected color (“like orange or black in a pink room”), and investing in a few unique, quality items to elevate a space. Her take on style is refreshingly grounded: “It doesn’t have to come from my store. You can build beautiful rooms with HomeGoods if you know your palette.” Looking Ahead Fall 2025 will bring new styles and new surprises—including a trunk show with the Houston-based Oh My Mahjong team. “We’re planning tables outside the shop, pizza next door, and a night of mahjong under the stars,” she says, her enthusiasm contagious. Although the demands on a small business owner are rigorous and the hours long, Kennedy wouldn’t trade it for anything. “I love it. I’ve been part of weddings, baby showers, graduations—I’ve watched generations grow up.” Indeed, Virginia Kennedy and The Preppy Pink Pony have become part of McLean’s own generational style story. A little preppy, a lot pink, and entirely heartfelt.

INSIDE THE WELLNESS WORLD OF DR. ANNA LE

DOCTOR, DESIGNER, DREAM-BUILDER

Walk into Anna Health and you might momentarily forget you're at a doctor's office. Soft lighting. Thoughtful palettes. Furniture that belongs more in Architectural Digest than a waiting room. But for Dr. Anna Le, every square foot is an extension of the mission: care that feels human .

“I always tell my staff, our patients are VIPs,” says Dr. Le, founder and physician extraordinaire behind one of Northern Virginia’s most beloved wellness practices. “Regardless of insurance, status, or anything else—they should feel deeply heard.”

From her first patients, whom she personally checked in and out during

So, how did she pick medicine? She laughs. “Honestly, I asked my friend which job makes the most money, and they said doctor. That’s how I chose it!”

But what began as a financial strategy quickly became a calling.

“I didn’t know at the time that if you love something and have passion, you’ll be successful no matter what.”

After graduating from GW and completing her residency at Howard, Dr. Le stayed on to teach residents—but her heart belonged in the community. With zero business experience, she walked into a lawyer’s office and said, “I want to open a practice.” When he asked what she’d call it, she paused.

“OUR PATIENTS ARE VIPS, REGARDLESS OF INSURANCE, STATUS, OR ANYTHING ELSE.”

her solo startup days, to the 5,000 patients her offices now see each month, Dr. Le’s brand of medicine is part science, part soul.

Born in Vietnam, Dr. Le was a physics and math prodigy who earned a spot at the prestigious Polytechnic University—a near-impossible feat in a school where “sometimes not even one student made it in.” But her dreams of academic glory shifted when she followed her mother and siblings to the U.S. “I was lonely there,” she reflects. “And I thought maybe America would give me a better place.”

“He said, ‘Well, you’re in Annandale… and your name is Anna. That’s a sign!’” she laughs.

Her first six months were rocky. Insurance claims had to be filled out by hand and mailed, and she worked as both receptionist and physician. “Some patients loved that I did everything.” she recalls. “But I just knew—I’m going to be fine.”

Fine turned into thriving. Today, her multi-location practice offers everything from OB-GYN to family medicine, fertility support, and hormone therapy—and now, care for men too.

CONTINUED >

Dr. Le’s philosophy is rooted in proactive, long-view care. “Patients don’t know what they don’t know,” she says—something echoed by her team leader Thomas. “If a patient has an issue, Dr. Le always asks: why? Not just for that one person, but how do we fix the system for everyone?”

She trains her staff the same way: with empathy and evolution in mind. “We have daily huddles, lectures, even our own internal 'Doctor Anna University,'” she says. “We’re building an algorithm so that everyone—from new PAs to seasoned MDs—can offer the same level of deep, layered care.”

And when it comes to reviews? “Even if we meant well, if a patient leaves unhappy, we learn from it. We audit the process. We go deeper.”

Dr. Le’s offices aren’t just calming— they’re chic. Think: modern classic meets functional sanctuary. “It all started with a business card,” she says. “My husband said, ‘Pick your color first.’ I didn’t get it then, but now I see—style communicates who we are.”

“HOW DO WE FIX THE SYSTEM FOR EVERYONE?”

From soft neutrals and curated accents to luxe staff breakrooms, her design sensibility is intentional. “I want both patients and providers to feel good the moment they walk in.”

And they do. Staff stay for years, many returning after nursing or PA school. Their kids intern. Their families are supported. “We take care of each other.”

With 1,500 baby deliveries this year and 5,000 visits a month, Anna Health is not just busy—it’s building something enduring. The next frontier? Patient navigators, standardized women’s health protocols, and broader access to high-quality, insurance-covered care.

When asked what excites her most about the future, she smiles: “Reaching more people. Impacting more lives. Making healthcare less scary, more stylish, and more human.”

Because at the end of the day, Dr. Le isn’t just designing a practice. She’s designing a legacy of care that feels as beautiful as it is transformative.

ARTIST: NIA STRATOS

Nia Tavlarides Stratos speaks about her art with a quiet intensity—a reverence that suggests painting, for her is more than just expression. From the first moment you encounter her artwork—vivid, multilayered works that shimmer with pigment, glass, and gold leaf—you sense that this is an artist in

A Life in Color, a Canvas of Joy
“It’s about letting go. I never know what a painting will truly be until it’s done.”

conversation, with her environment, with her materials, with her ancestry, and with the ever-shifting chaos and beauty of being alive. “I was eight years old when I sold my first painting,” she recalls. “It was turned into fabric by Burlington Industries and I got paid $35. I remember thinking; ‘I want do this.’” It was the beginning of a lifelong journey marked by relentless creativity, bold experimentation, and a deep connection to the natural world around her.

By her senior year of high school, Nia had earned a coveted scholarship to the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. to study printmaking. “I took the Metro every week, which had just opened—it was all so exciting,” she says. “Our work was eventually exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery. For a teenager that was a dream.”

Her dreams only expanded from there. In high school Nia took metal shop instead of home economics and after studying art and design at the University

of Maryland, she began designing and selling jewelry to Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s. In her late 20’s Nia shifted gears into advertising and then interior design, all the while feeding her appetite for painting. That hunger became a calling. “I don’t plan my paintings, unless they are commissions. I just let the work evolve,” she explains. “It’s pure impulse. I’ll look at colors on a plate or the leaves on a tree and feel the urge—I have to paint this week.”

Her style is both abstract and organic, rooted in a reverence for materials and an almost spiritual spontaneity. Nia experiments with a variety of materials including acrylics, encaustic wax, oils, pigment powders, glass, car enamel paint—even fruit net packaging. “I also love metallic and iridescent finishes,” she says.

Her paintings are reflective of more than just a unique eye for color and a practiced hand. Her memory, heritage, and unmistakable joie de vivre infuse

everything she creates. Her work glows with iridescent pigment, and often evokes the iconography of her Greek heritage—mosaic, gold leaf, stained glass and sacred geometry. “My father was a Greek Orthodox priest for over 60 years. He helped design Saint Sophia Cathedral in Washington, one of the first authentically byzantine cathedrals in America” she explains. “For decades, the mosaics and designs for Saint Sophia were laid out on our dining room table. Those tiny pieces of glass and stone, those colors—they’re in my DNA.”

It's visible in her process, too. She sometimes blows pigment through straws, mimicking the organic fluidity of nature. “It’s about letting go. I never know what a painting will truly be until it’s done.” That feeling is palpable. Her art radiates warmth and energy, with titles like Elated Spirits and Evolution hinting at deeper themes of harmony and transformation. “I’m not a sad artist,” she says. “I create from joy. I want people to feel something when they look at my work—empathy, connection, maybe even just a moment of beauty.”

Among the places that she has exhibited include: The Smithsonian, The Women’s National Democratic Club, The OAS Art Museum of the Americas—where her solo exhibition featured 48 works and drew packed crowds. “That was a highlight,” she says. “But I also loved showing at National Airport, the exhibit lasted six months and really gave me momentum.” She has presented her art at The National Museum of Women in the Arts, galleries during Miami Art Basel and in Italy.

“I am inspired by the simplest things. Color motivates me - I love to transform the images in my head onto paper, canvas and other surfaces.”

Her work is held in both private and corporate collections that include VISA Card Corporation. Now based in Vienna, Virginia, she finds daily inspiration in the landscape and evolving creative culture of the DMV. “DC used to be so conservative,” she says. “But now it’s blossoming, it is reflected in both art and design. People are mixing antiques with bold contemporary art. I’ve grown along with it.”

As fall approaches, she’s prepping new work for upcoming exhibitions. “September is so

transitional—the colors shift, the light changes. That always shows up in my palette.” And for collectors eager to bring her art home, she does private commissions and now limited edition prints. “I haven’t really done them before,” she admits, “but I’m ready.” Nia is, above all, an inventor. Whether she’s creating art with a technique or layering gold leaf inspired by Byzantine churches, she channels a boundless creative force. “Everything I do in life speaks to the art I make,” she says. “I think that’s true for all of us. You just have to pay attention.”

From Seashells to Smiles

A Fresh Look at Pediatric Dentistry in McLean

Island Children’s Dentistry doesn’t just change how kids care for their teeth—it changes how they feel about visiting the dentist. When you walk through the doors, you’re immediately transported, not just into a dentist office, but into an oasis. The calming blues of the ocean, sandy accents, and playful sea creatures adorning the walls suggest you’re closer to the beach than the Beltway. For Dr. Gema Island, this aesthetic is no accident—it’s style with purpose.

“I wanted to create a space that felt more like a beachside retreat than a dental office,” Dr. Island shares. “The goal was to evoke calm, joy, and comfort—so kids leave with smiles, not stress.”

Celebrating the tenth anniversary of her beloved pediatric practice, Dr. Island reflects on a journey shaped by legacy, vision, and a dedication to redefining what pediatric dental care can feel like. Raised by a mother who was also a dentist, Dr. Island absorbed the essence of compassionate care from an early age. “My mom’s nurturing approach deeply influenced me—not just in how I treat patients, but in how I lead as a business owner and show up as a mom,” she says. “It’s all about blending excellence with empathy.”

That blend is evident in every detail of the practice. From playful murals and soft seating to minimal wait times and staff trained in child-friendly communication, Island Children’s Dentistry doesn’t just look different—it feels different.

“Style, to me, is more than what meets the eye,” Dr. Island explains. “It’s how we operate, how we listen, how we build trust with families.”

Dr. Island’s approach is as modern as it is mindful. It’s not just about clean teeth—it’s about early intervention, wellness, and confidence-building. Her practice integrates the latest in digital imaging,

AI-assisted cavity detection, and even virtual consultations through teledentistry. She’s also committed to sustainability, adopting eco-conscious materials and energy-efficient systems. “Smart dentistry today is high-tech, high-touch, and ecofriendly,” she says.

Her philosophy of care extends far beyond clinic walls. Whether serving in global missions or volunteering at local Vienna events, Dr. Island believes in “a style of service that’s grounded in compassion.” One of her most memorable moments? Supporting a child with special needs through a difficult visit. “We slowed down, adjusted our approach, and built trust. That moment reminded me that empathy is the most powerful tool we have.”

As a McLean resident, wife, and mother of two, Dr. Island knows a thing or two about balancing roles—with style. “I make time for long walks with my labradoodle, community involvement, prayer, and reflection,” she shares. “Wellness, authenticity, and staying grounded are part of how I show up for my family and my patients.”

So what’s the one style rule she lives by—both in practice and in life? “Genuine compassion never goes out of style,” she says with a smile. “Listen well. Lead kindly. That’s the heart of everything I do.”

Whether you're a parent, grandparent, or just someone looking to redefine the meaning of care, Dr. Island’s story is a reminder: style isn’t just about what we see—it’s about how we make others feel.
