Sometimes when looking back on my previous year, I feel like I fell short on what I wanted to accomplish. Life happens, and occasionally the things that I thought I needed to do or wanted to have time for, just didn’t come to fruition. But, not always is that a bad thing.

entirely different. I took on different projects that ended up being a lot of work, but well worth it. I also cut some activities out that ended up being a healthy thing, regardless of it being something I enjoy. It’s okay to divert from the things we think we really should accomplish or do because sometimes we don’t know what we need. We did something crazy as a family this winter that is not the norm for us. I have four very active kids ranging from age 8 to 15, and between my husband coaching soccer for three of my children and all of the other sports and activities that we are involved in on a regular basis, our schedule for the past several years has been packed full every day of the week year round. My oldest is going to be gone for college in 3 very short years, so time is moving quickly, and we are too busy. We did the “unthinkable” and took the entire winter off from almost everything for all four children. It feels weird. It feels good and very refreshing.

Initially, it was an adjustment to not have every weekend filled with games back to back all day, because I love watching my kids play sports, and they love playing. Even so, it has been nice to enjoy each other and is just what we needed, even if it is just for a season. Our January issue is dedicated to health living. We are sharing healthy lifestyle tips, some inspiring stories from people in our community and also what some around the city are doing to maintain health and wellness in areas of their life. Working on this issue has me inspired and ready to reset after a month full of holiday eating.

RELENTLESS ENDURANCE LOCAL MARATHON RUNNERS CHALLENGE THEIR LIMITS
THERE IS A LARGE NUMBER OF ADULT MEN AND WOMEN RUNNING MARATHONS, AND THE LIST KEEPS GETTING BIGGER EVERY YEAR. There are many stories about runners ranging from people who started running in high school to those who didn’t start running until later in life to those who have suffered from injuries and have changed careers while running. Here are three of their stories.
SCOTT WILSON SCOTT WILSON
Scott Willson is in his second career.
He was an air traffic controller with the Air Force and then with the Federal Aviation Administration. He retired in 2012 and celebrated his retirement by flying to San Diego and riding his bike to Jacksonville, Florida, in 28 days. Scott graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2005 and set up a practice in cosmetic and age management medicine in 2007 in Overland Park. He started running at the age of 14 in cross-country and track at Sioux City West in Iowa and ran for the Air Force Cross -Country team. “Towards the end of my duty, I ran my first marathon in Idaho in 3:12,” he says. “I ran in my first Boston Marathon in 1992. I have run in 25 of the last 26 Boston Marathons.” In addition to long-distance running, he has run in six Ironman Triathlons, consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.22mile run. He also has run in the Leadville Trail 100-mile run. “Running has taught me self-discipline and perseverance,” he says. “It makes everything else in life seem so much easier.” He has a simple training regimen: he runs about 45 miles per week with one rest day. The speed and distance of the run vary each day. Scott notes that he and his wife, Tracie, run four to six marathons a year. His advice to older adults is “Get up and move,” he says. “Most of us rust out, not wear out. We are capable of far more than each of us know.” CONTINUED >

BETHANY
BUTLER MYERS BETHANY BUTLER MYERS
Leawood’s Bethany Butler Myers was the daughter of a Hall of Fame track coach. “Track and Field was sort of a family value growing up,” she says. “I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma, and so in order to form a summer track team, my dad recruited some of the top runners from the surrounding small towns to form a relay team.” She was awarded a small track scholarship to Evangel College, but health issues prevented her from being able to compete. Bethany started distance running at the age of 28 in the Houston Half-Marathon. “This was the first time I had trained for distance running,” she says. She qualified for the 2013 Boston Marathon, which was the absolute highlight of her running career.
And then came the finish. “The turn into the finish was so emotional—it was the most amazing, fun finish experience.” Then came the terrorist bombing. “I had completed the marathon but was still in

Bethany has found a new love in olympic lifting. “I prefer to workout with a barbell these days and lift heavy stuff.”

ANDY ORTBALS ANDY ORTBALS
Leawood’s Andy Ortbals played football and ran track at Harrisonville High School. He graduated in 1980 but didn’t start distance running until after college. “I always loved running,” he says. “It is one activity that I can always do even when I don’t want to do anything. One day, my wife and I wanted to try a road race. Typically someone might start with a 5K, but we signed up for the Chicago Marathon, and the rest is history.” Andy, who now competes in the 55-59 age group, has completed 12 Boston Marathons in a row, run in the Grand Canyon Rim2RIM2Rim, two 50-mile Ultras and two Leadville 100 attempts, missing the cutoff at 60.5 miles both times. His best marathon finish is 3:19. What is his training regimen for marathons? “I have tried just about everything from running three days to seven days a week,” he says. “Now I really don’t follow a training plan. “All I know is you can’t fake a marathon. You have to put in the miles if you want any good results, and maybe you should be at a race pace or faster.” Andy and his wife have owned a manufacturing business, Photo-Graphics Co. Inc., for 30 years. The Leawood resident isn’t into just running. “My wife and I are really into hiking and backpacking,” he says. “We have hiked and camped in many of the national parks.” And the couple had three grown children—two of them in graduate school—along with one grandbaby.

23 years, the last 19 at the city of Leawood," Hoffine says. “After high school, I attended JCCC and obtained my associates in fire administration. During my two years at JCCC, I was fortunate enough to be part of the
Olympic weightlifting team coached by Ivan Javorick. His instruction translated very well into motivating and assisting others to set and reach goals through fitness.” From the outside, one couldn’t begin to guess the wide variety of fitness equipment located inside the station. “Our weight room is well-equipped and kept in top condition. It has just about all the free weights anyone could ask for," Hoffine says. "We also have two treadmills, an elliptical, stair stepper, rower and stationary bike. Several firefighters have brought equipment such as tractor tires, logs and sleds for outdoor CrossFit workouts.” There’s an incentive for physical fitness at the station. “The department conducts a physical through KU MedWest once a year and offers a wellness incentive program that allows firefighters to test their physical abilities against the national average," he says. "The city of Leawood offers incentive programs like the 'Biggest Loser' program which allows all department employees to participate and win time off for their efforts.” The average firefighter averages about an hour working out each shift.

THE LEAWOOD FIREFIGHTERS “Most firefighters exercise between one to three hours every day," Hoffine says. "The National Fire Protection Association sets standards for the fire service. NFPA 1581 and 1582 addresses the need for physical fitness in the fire service as well as many other day-to-day safety issues. The Leawood Fire Department has adopted this standard, stating that each firefighter shall be given at least one hour per day to exercise.” This was exciting news to Hoffine at the start of his career. “I was in total disbelief when I was told that I would be paid to work out every day I was on shift," he says. "At the age of 20, all I could think was, 'this is awesome!'” Hoffine sees diet as being just as important as exercise. “As firefighters, we burn a lot of calories. Most of the firefighters here try to eat right on a regular basis. One rule we try to stick to is fresh is best, meaning if it comes prepackaged you probably shouldn’t be eating it," he says. "Almost each shift and station has at least one shift cook. My shift and station is lucky enough to have two wonderful cooks, Sean and Vinnie. We typically have shift dinners, but make our own lunches. It is hard to keep a good diet working in the fire service when we have the very nice citizens of Leawood bringing us so many wonderful treats. Thank you, by the way.” Hoffine’s
personal
workout
routine
shows the constant dedication needed to be a firefighter. “My typical daily routine starts at 5:45 a.m. with a 3- to 5-mile run. I am lucky enough to have a group of firefighters that work out with me," he says. "Our afternoon workout starts at 3 p.m., work schedule permitting, and consists of a CrossFit workout of the day and straight into heavy weights. Our first shift is chest and abs, the second shift is arms, and the third is back, shoulders and legs. At least one of the shifts will have some sort of Olympic lift thrown in to build power. Most of our workouts revolve around building power and quick recovery.” It takes a team effort to maintain an active lifestyle. 30

Owners Jill and Brandon Minton founded t.Loft in 2013 after Jill and other family members were diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks itself when exposed to gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye and malt. Jill was an IT consultant with two young children. When she felt fatigued, she assumed it was just her busy lifestyle, but as her health deteriorated, she knew something was wrong. After several doctor visits and a diagnosis, she was determined to not let celiac disease limit her from enjoying food and life. Jill decided to take action, which started with tea. Tea has been around for centuries—it’s packed with antioxidants and known for its medicinal and healing purposes. Even before the diagnosis, tea had always been Jill’s go-to, so it only seemed right to start her wellness journey with tea, naming the company after the powerful beverage. She started creating her own blends, spending weekends selling drinks and eats at local farmers markets and growing the business into what it is today: a place that feels like home with delicious healthy options.

cashews, garlic and spicy teriyaki. t.Loft is most known for their protein balls. “We offer them in a variety of flavors and introduce fun seasonal flavors as well," Jill says. "They make a great snack or finish off any meal.” Their classic peanut butter protein ball is made with all-natural peanut butter, gluten-free oats, honey, maple syrup, nuts and flaxseed, which can be plain or topped with a little dot of chocolate. A trip to t.Loft would not be complete without tea. Choose between white, green, black, wellness and matcha. If you’re looking to change your eating habits, Jill says it’s not just about taking foods away. “Take it one step at a time. Focus on incorporating and less on eliminating. Read labels and pall-naturalural foods and products over everything," she says. "General rule: the more fresh produce, the better! Every body is unique and different diets work differently for each person. Figure out what works for you and what makes you feel the best.”

LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS' KINDNESS CHALLENGE
WE AT LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS ARE EXCITED TO UNVEIL A PROJECT THAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON CALLED ELEVATE THAT PROMOTES KINDNESS, THOUGHTFULNESS AND POSITIVITY IN OUR AREA MIDDLE SCHOOLS. We believe kids have great ideas and have the power to change the world around them by being kind citizens. Elevate encourages them to put those ideas into action. We are challenging students who wish to participate in Elevate to come up with an idea that encourages kindness and then create a video or photo project to share with the community by entering our monthly kindness competition. Those videos and photo projects go live on our Elevate website the first week of every month for the community to vote on, and the student with the winning project will win $1,000. Each month, students will have the opportunity to submit new videos and photo projects for a chance to win, and a new winner will be selected every month. In the spring, we will invite teachers and administration in each school to pick a project or two that students in their building have come up with, and adopt that project to become part of the culture and climate of their building. The winning school in Blue Valley and the winning school in Olathe will both be awarded a $5,000 grant for their school. These grants are graciously sponsored by Shawnee Mission Audi and Commerce Bank. We designed this part of the competition to show our students that their ideas matter and that they can make a difference. To find out more about Elevate and to support our students by voting on the videos, visit elevateschools.com. Follow us on Instagram at @elevate.kc or Facebook at Elevate Kindness Challenge. Our next voting round begins February 3rd. Thank you to Audi Shawnee Mission and Commerce Bank for supporting kindness in our schools and partnering with Lifestyle Publications as a sponsor for our endof-year building grants for Elevate. We also want to thank the Blue Valley and Olathe School Districts for supporting Elevate by allowing us the opportunity to offer this competition to their students.
