Lifestyle Letter

Letter from the Creative Director

JULY 2016 sales director

Matthew Perry | Matthew@LifestylePubs.com

I am thrilled to be joining the Lifestyle family as the Creative Director, and as a lifelong resident of Kansas City, I am even more excited for the opportunity to bring a taste of our community to your doorstep. Our neighborhoods and the surrounding area have so much to offer, and the rich diversity of talent, culture, life experiences and beauty of Kansas City, are snapshots that I can’t wait to share with you in the issues to come. As my former titles of elementary school teacher, event planner and editor reflect, I thrive off of being creative, discovering and illuminating strengths in others and learning about people’s stories and what makes them tick. It is both fascinating and humbling for me to see the beauty and gifts each person possesses, and it is a true pleasure to get to shed a little bit of light on people in our community. I have the honor of working with the very talented, Paul Versluis, who is joining our team as the Director of Photography. If you are not already familiar with his work, you are in for a treat. He is truly an exquisitely talented photographer, as you will see in the issues to come. In honor of the 4th of July, it is a privilege to give you a view into the lives of a few of our local veterans who have served this great nation. I have always had such an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our country. There is no greater sacrifice then to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at Lifestyle Publications want to thank all of the veterans and their loved ones for the sacrifice and dedication they have made for our country. Personally, this spotlight on veterans is in honor of the friends and family in my life who have served or are still serving our country.

flavors of the Midwest so amazingly. Opened in Leawood, Kansas in 2012, Rye owners, as well as husband and wife, Megan and Colby Garrlets envisioned a restaurant that celebrates the comfort foods of the Heart of the America and fuses a sophistication that showcases their culinary expertise. Just as their marriage is a blending of traditions Rye mirrors this in providing customers with a variety of savory, sweet, and fresh tastes that appeal to everyone. If diversity is the dining goal then Rye will meet this standard. The menu options include an extensive list of food in which can be found on the brunch, lunch, and dinner menus. Some of the more popular choices include the piquant shrimp and grits, hearty fried chicken, and the succulent prime KC strip steak. For the beverage enthusiast, choices range from an expansive list of beers, whiskeys, cocktails, and wines with options that are sure to entice all. Combine this with an assortment of palatable appetizers and garden-crisp salads, and diners are sure to leave with a food rich experience reminiscent of a modern-day Sunday

feast. And what would make a meal complete but a delectable dessert? Rye delivers in this department too with an indulgence of pie, tart, or cake that will surely excite. Aside from the numerous menu options, the vibe of the restaurant combines a comfortable charm with an urban appeal that is the ideal backdrop for business luncheons, a midday gathering over mimosas, or a couple’s first dinner together. Rye successfully merges the Garrlets rich cooking heritage with contemporary tastes. In dining in this restaurant customers can expect to experience the ambience of a comfortable family meal with the sophistication of trendy KC. It is a marriage that is working for everyone and Megan and Colby Garlett are extending their love for food to the Heartland. Rye is located in Mission Farms at 10551 Mission Road in Leawood, Kansas. Lindsey Wade, part owner of RW2 Productions and The Guild in the Crossroads, and his wife, Jennifer, a 25-year apparel industry veteran, did what many of us only dream of doing and moved to their favorite vacation destination—Costa Rica. They have always had a passion for travel and adventure, and their love of surfing is what originally drew them to vacation in Costa Rica.

COSTA RICA (CON TI N UED)

“ There is no place more beautiful, peaceful, or more exciting than Costa Rica. It is a paradise for an adventurous spirit.” “ Your mind is healthier simply by breathing the clean air, and the connectivity between nature and people is very unique.”

28

Leawood Lifestyle | July 2016

"We rented a car and traveled around the country and eventually landed on a beach we now call home." Eight years ago they made a “five year” plan that if they were not both 100 percent happy with their lives in Kansas City, they would move to Costa Rica. They had traveled there in 2007 and fell in love with the beauty, the energy, and the excitement of the country. In 2015, they took a leap of faith and moved to Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas where they bought a house, a car, and enrolled their four-year-old son, Henry, in school. The Wades had traveled internationally for most of their lives, both together and separately. They had been to the beaches of Florida, Mexico, Greece, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Australia, Italy, Hawaii, Turks & Caicos, and Puerto Rico, but they always felt that Costa Rica had a different energy about it. “There is no place more beautiful, peaceful, or more exciting than Costa Rica. It is a paradise for an adventurous spirit.” There is such biodiversity in Costa Rica, not only because it's a land bridge between North and South America, but also because the terrain is so varied, and there are weather patterns moving in from both the Pacific and Atlantic/Caribbean. There are impressive volcanoes, mountain areas, rivers, lakes, and beaches all throughout the country. There are many beautiful beaches - most of the popular ones are on the Pacific side, but the Caribbean has many expansive beaches as well. Lindsey is still very much involved with his Kansas City businesses, and they still own a home in Kansas City, so they are able to travel back often, which has helped with the transition for their son. Moving to Costa Rica hasn't been easy, but it has been worth it. "We spend more time with our son, Henry, but less time with our extended family. We have a healthier lifestyle here, because we have time to work out, cook fresh meals and are more in tune with nature." Your mind is healthier simply by breathing the clean air, and the connectivity between nature and people is very unique." Because the Wades have made Costa Rica their home, they have in-depth knowledge to share with future travelers wanting to head to this beautiful country. They live on the Pacific side of Costa Rica in Playa Hermosa, which has one of the most consistent surf breaks in the world. Forty-five minutes from their home is Manual Antonio National Park, which has one of the most impressive landscapes in the world and has several coves with tons of white sand beaches and lush foliage amidst great mountains and forests that reach the beaches. Additionally, it is located in the tropical forest where one can see all kinds of wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, and 184 species of birds. They live a short drive from Arenal Volcano which has an abundance of outdoor activities that provide travelers great opportunities to learn about the environment and spot wildlife. Visitors to Arenal can enjoy canopy tours, canyoneering adventures, self or guided hiking trips, CONTINUED >

COSTA RICA (CON TI N UED)

and even white-water rafting excursions. There are hanging bridges to be explored and hot springs to be soaked in. The Wades recommend staying in the lodge at the base of the volcano and watch the lava flow glow at night. If hot springs sounds enticing, Tabacon Hot Springs, set amidst a rainforest near the base of the Arenal Volcano, is a fantastic place to unwind. Jennifer and Lindsey also enjoy experiencing the local waterfalls and zip-lining through the jungle which is only about 15 minutes from their house. Traveling in some Central American countries can at times be risky depending on the destination; however, Jennifer and Lindsey contend that, ”Costa Rica is extremely safe for travelers. There are very few violent crimes; the biggest concern for tourists is petty theft and pedestrians on the road at night.” The move for the Wades has been a big change, but they think it has been worth it. For them, Costa Rica has a different day-to-day pace and also offers a different perspective on the way to live life. They appreciate the slower speed, the concern for environmental issues, the happiness of the locals, and the way the culture celebrates families and children. The national saying is “Pura Vida” which means “Pure Life.” By definition it means to live a peaceful, simple, and uncluttered life with a deep appreciation for nature, family and friends. A “real living” that reflects happiness, wellbeing and satisfaction. The energy of the country revolves around Pura Vida, and the people wish it on each other constantly; in fact you hear it all day long—when you greet someone, say good-bye, or even in passing. It is a daily reminder to keep your priorities straight and enjoy the gift of life. If you are thinking of traveling outside the country this summer, consider going to Costa Rica which offers visitors a surprising array of attractions, a strong commitment to the environment, and a never ending connection to nature. It is only a six hour flight from Kansas City, which for international travel is relatively fast and easy. The beauty and tranquility of Costa Rica will not disappoint.

VIETNAM WAR HERO (CON TI N U ED)

At the outset of World War II, Bud’s dad took a job in Charleston, South Carolina, where he rendered service in the war industry of ship building and repair. In Bud’s own words, his parents, like many citizens in that era's farming world, were not formally educated to a high level; bucking hay, planting and harvesting crops took precedence over Math and Science. And, yet, although Bud's mother and father only completed the 8th grade, they possessed abundant native intelligence, were very bright, modeling for him a work ethic that set the standard for his own life. May 24, 1965, was graduation day at Scottsdale High School, Scottsdale, Arizona, Bud's new home; Bud enlisted in the Marines that very day. He had known virtually his whole life that he wanted to serve his county and do so in the Marines. He hails from a long line of relatives dating back to the American civil War who also served, and Bud said, “My family was very patriotic. It was almost expected by my parents that I would serve our country, and it was something I gladly

To be more precise, Bud said, “I spent twenty-four months, twelve days, two hours, and five minutes in Vietnam.” While there, he spent his first twelve months as a Watch Stander in the U.S. diplomatic community where he and his fellow Marines protected classified material, and U.S. lives and property. It was in this portion of his tour of duty that a significant moment in the war’s history occurred: the Viet Cong attack on the U. S. Embassy during the Tet Offensive at 2:50 a.m., January 31, 1968. He points out that the Embassy chancery was never penetrated by the Viet Cong, and 19 of the known 20 attackers were killed in the fight with the remaining Viet Cong survivor taken captive. Moreover, although the size and scale of the attack was insignificant, its political ramifications were huge. The international headlines around the world incorrectly stated that the United States Embassy in Saigon had been seized. Bud speaks of how his training during boot camp prepared him and his fellow Marines to handle the events of that day. The Marines, seemingly intuitively, knew how to maneuver, how to cover themselves, how to fight and how to defend. In many ways, he knows he is sitting here today enjoying his life as a result of all he learned during those dog days of boot camp. His unit was never more tightly knit than at the end of that experience. Although the country was deeply divided about the Vietnam War, Bud says within his unit there was no division of which he was aware. They were unified and focused on their mission. They were voluntarily serving in the military, because they loved the United States and were willing to give their lives to protect her freedom. He and his fellows were keenly aware of the protests occurring in the states and recognized the right to protest. But, even

Cori Jo Hawkins Bluegrass Musician to Release Latest Album Titled LOXO

ARTICLE BY BRIAN ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY TREVOR HAWKINS

etween the sounds of the fiddle and the amazing stacking layers of four

part harmonies, bluegrass music has been winning hearts around the world since the 1940’s. The sound of bluegrass music has been growing exponentially over the past 25 years, and there is a whole generation of young musicians coming up because of this musical movement. Bluegrass music is truly an American art form. Its music today encompasses everything from the jamgrass of Yonder Mountain String Band to the traditional sound of Del McCoury to the more eclectic flavor of Trampled by Turtles. Cori Jo Hawkins, a Kansas City Native, is a part of that growing movement. “I began learning how to play the fiddle when I was 7 years old, and I was bluegrass and classically trained. My dad played in a bluegrass band, so I grew up going to

Since then, Cori has grown into a phenomenallytrained musician, and her incredible talent and unparalleled passion for music has been capturing audiences wherever she plays. “Having a hobby and a love for music that is so strong has given my life more meaning. It’s my identity, and it’s part of who I am. It has always given my life a drive and direction,” Cori says. Cori started off listening to bands like Alison Krauss and the Dixie Chicks. From there she began to enjoy the sounds of Jack Johnson, M. Ward, and Angus & Julia Stone. Her love for bluegrass has opened up doors for her to play all over the country, and in addition she has opened up for multiple big country artists like Clint Black, Alabama, Diamond Rio, Tracy Lawrence, Jack Ingram, Uncle Kracker and Easton Corbin, just to name a few. She is most excited about her newest project that she is currently working on called LOXO. “It has a folk/bluesy influence,” says Cori. “I am really taking it back to my roots. It is the most genuine expression of music I have done yet, and I feel empowered with every song I finish. Since I have a home on a lake, it has a lot of influence on my writing. I feel centered around water, and it always seems to seep into my writing.” The reason she chose the album title LOXO is because it is short for Loxodonta, which is the scientific species name for the African Elephant. When her album is finished, she will be putting a percentage of her album sales toward organizations that are trying to make a difference in saving African Elephants and Rhinos. If you are interested in booking, email her at cja464@ gmail.com or call 816.809.2009. You can also follow her and her music at LittleMissMammoth.com. July 2016 | Leawood Lifestyle

To Canvas In A Snap T

his is one of my constant “go to” DIY projects. It’s fast, it’s easy and it looks oh so professional. I love displaying photos, but I

don’t necessarily love a lot of photo frames. These canvases create a crisp, clean look…. All in about 30 minutes! Let’s get started.

Step 1: • First things first, grab your supplies. • Photo on photo paper • 1 ½ inch thick wrapped canvas • Mod Podge in Matte finish • Black spray paint in Satin finish • Clear spray paint in Satin finish • 4 inch or 6 inch foam paint roller • Small paint tray • Place your photo on the clean, dry canvas to make sure it fits correctly. Trim the edges if necessary.

Step 2: Spray paint the canvas sides and a little of the top with the black spray paint. It is VERY important to let this dry completely.

Step 3: Using your foam roller, roll Mod Podge over the entire top of the canvas. Center your photo on top of the wet Mod Podge. Smooth the photo with your hands starting in the middle and pushing out toward the edges

Step 4: Roll a thin even layer of Mod Podge over your photo. This is a little scary “painting” over your photo, but I promise it will dry clear. Once it is covered with a thin layer start at one side and roll straight rows from side to side, in the same direction, as to avoid roller lines once it dries. If you see small bubbles in the wet Mod Podge, it is too thick. Thin it out by taking an almost dry roller over the photo to lift some of the Mod Podge. Repeat until the bubbles are gone. Let this dry completely.

Step 5 • Spray the top and sides of the entire canvas and photo with satin spray paint. • Dry…Hang….High Five. Congratulations on your new Photo Canvas! This same technique can be used on 4x4 tiles of your choice to create custom coasters. You will add a bit of Peel and Stick Cork or felt to the back of the tile so the coaster doesn’t scratch. Cheers! July 2016 | Leawood Lifestyle

Dave Tiehen

Tales of jumping out of planes and a fascination with the outdoors and adventure initially piqued Dave Tiehen’s interest in the military. But it was the intense training, leadership opportunities, and the real world mission of the war on terrorism that gripped him and took him around the world as a military officer serving tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Tiehen was born and raised in Kansas City. He attended Rockhurst High School and then Northwest Missouri State University, where he participated in the Army’s ROTC program. Following graduation, he was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer and stationed in Ft. Hood, Texas, where he 48

Leawood Lifestyle | July 2016

served as an Assistant Battalion Intelligence Officer in the 1st Cavalry Division and later as Company Executive Officer. In December 2008, Tiehen’s unit was deployed to Mosul in Northern Iraq for a oneyear tour. Primarily serving on base, he provided intelligence briefs and reports to commanders and units on patrol about the area, describing the enemy, their tactics and local populations. “At the time, Al Qaeda had largely been driven out of the capital city of Baghdad, but it still had a heavy presence in Mosul,” Tiehen says. “A lot of resources were focused to us, because we were in the spot where things were happening. It was Al Qaeda’s last stand.”

After serving for a year in Iraq, Tiehen received additional training stateside. He was then assigned to the role of Battalion Intelligence Officer in the 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley Kansas. His battalion was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012 for an anticipated nine-month tour. In Afghanistan, a health setback caused Tiehen to be medically evacuated to Germany. Doctors discovered a blood clot in his leg, prescribed blood-thinning medication and declared him not f it for active duty. After a six-year Army career, Tiehen was medically discharged.

Dr. Michelle Olson

Dr. Olson was deployed to Iraq in May of 2008 to July of 2009 with the 464th Medical Corp. Her unit was in charge of dental clinics scattered across the southern half of Iraq, in which she was designated as the Officer in Charge at Taji Dental Clinic. She completed the remainder of her active duty service in Germany. Throughout her time in the Army, she was privileged to be surrounded by seasoned dentists who were ready and willing to share their knowledge. “All of my experiences in the Army helped me to become a better dentist and gave me an abundance of experiences that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. In addition, I was able to live in Germany and travel all over Europe, which was an experience that I would only have had from being in the Army.” After completing her four years of active duty, Dr. Olson spent her first year in Virginia Beach, and finally settled in Kansas City in 2011.

Jeffery Wagoner

With absolutely no flying experience and a college degree that in no way prepared him in for a military career, Jeff Wagoner drove to Kansas City and applied to be an aviator. At that time, many other people his age were trying to do the same thing. He credits being an Eagle Scout for setting him apart from much of his competition. “Being an Eagle Scout not only looked good on my application, but more importantly, scouting instilled in me a sense of service that is important in serving successfully in the military.” Captain Wagoner got his commission through Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS), Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida and remained there for flight school. “There was no “Maverick” or “Iceman” in the real Naval aviation.” Captain Wagoner remembers, “ My call sign (nickname) was 'Cheese'. You got your call sign for doing something stupid or embarrassing or both.” After 6 years active duty, Captain Wagoner served as a drilling reservist for 17 years. Both provided a variety in missions, including cruising from San Diego around Cape Horn at the tip of South America to Virginia on an aircraft carrier that needed to be overhauled. Flying 43 missions in the Persian Gulf and serving as a lead planner for international security forces during the 2004 Athens Olympics, each offered opportunities to visit many ports of call including Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong. The military offered life lessons; attention to detail, accepting responsibility for one’s actions and service to others are some that stand out to him. July 2016 | Leawood Lifestyle

If you do nothing else, do this move:

The Push-up. There is no movement better for building overall strength. Don't be intimidated; you don't need to be a Marine. Start with a modified version with your hands on your counter top. Do 10 of each variation, every day. Next week, increase it to 15. Week 3, try it on your knees. It takes less than 10 minutes a day. Recognize your progress as you get stronger and be proud.

The standard push-up:

Photos by Paul Versluis

Targets arms, shoulders, core & chest.

1. Place hands on mat, directly below shoulders. 2. Zip your abs up & pull belly button into your spine. Your abs protect your back. Keeping them up & tight is the MOST important thing. 3. Tilt hips forward creating a diagonal line. Either stay on knees or come up on your toes. 4. Drop your chest towards the ground, in control, then simply push it back up.

The wide

stance push-up: Targets primarily chest and also abs, back & shoulders 1. Use the same form as the standard push-up, but place your hands wider than your shoulders. Your elbows will be slightly flared. 2. Drop your chest to the ground, and use the strength in your chest to push back up. 3. This is a slightly easier than the standard.

The tricep push-up:

Targets primarily triceps (back of your upper arms) also shoulders, back & abs 1. Use the same form as the standard push-ups, but this time you squeeze your elbows into your side. Place your hands just a few inches apart, directly under your chest. 2. Drop your chest as low as possible, keeping your elbows glued into your rib cage. 3. This push-up takes some time to develop the strength. If you cannot take your chest all the way down, even dropping a few inches will work the muscles and build strength. 52

TIPS

Abs must be tight. Pull your belly button up into your spine.

Keep your spine, neck and hips all in alignment.

For A Proper Push-Up: Do not hinge or bend from your hips.

Relax your neck. Your gaze should be at the top of your mat.

Breath: exhale as you come up,

Open your hands, press your weight

inhale on the way down.

into your thumb & forefinger.

“A

colorful, fun take on classic” This is how Georgia Jones,

lead designer for Overland Park’s locally owned and operated A&M Home Furnishings describes the aesthetic of this Mission Hills home, a downsizing operation that recently underwent both a stylistic face-lift and a kitchen remodel. Georgia collaborated with the homeowner to select fabrics and furnishings that would convey the look she wanted.

Shawn

McCune,

Certified

Kitchen Designer and owner of Kitchen Design Gallery, was tasked with transforming the kitchen, now a stunning addition to his award-winning portfolio of work. From the various vibrant patterns on the upholstered furniture, the colorful pillows, rugs and accent pieces throughout the rooms, to the gorgeous violet dining room walls, Georgia says the homeowner knew what she wanted before she even moved in; the home now boasts a lively mix of unexpected color combinations paired with classic pieces for a fresh, unique and cheerful space. Georgia notes that she clicked right away with the homeowner and was inspired by her verve; "she is a whirlwind of energy and ideas and really fun to work with-- she has a strong design sense, and it was so fun to assist her in pulling it all together.” She was delighted when 56

the homeowner popped back in the store one day last summer to share that she had hired Shawn McCune of Kitchen Design Gallery to renovate her kitchen, knowing the level of artistry and impeccable quality he would bring to the project. The triangular ceiling and window in the living room is mirrored as a cove above the island -- what Shawn describes as the centerpiece of the kitchen -- in the remodeled space he says was created by changing the interior architectural plans into a clean, contemporary, fully-functional area. “The structure really centered around those big windows,” Shawn says. “She wanted to be able to have an eat-in kitchen, as well as a place for her and her husband to sit and eat and be able to take advantage of the views of the yard. They wanted lots of natural light in, and that was her favorite view from the house.” The kitchen also features a small buffet area that incorporates the wood throughout the room, custom bar stools, a booth sitting area and capiz shell lighting above the island -- an addition Georgia suggested during a pop-in visit from the homeowner to talk about the area’s progress. (Top Left) The kitchen’s big windows allowed for a lot of light, a feature Kitchen Design Gallery’s Shawn McCune says the homeowner wanted, as well as an unobstructed look at the homeowner’s favorite view from the house.
