That’s good news for all the craft beer drinkers out there who, according to Will Golden, head brewer and co-founder at Austin Beer Works, outnumber the folks brewing it. This is why he’s trying to promote the art through the Texas Craft Brewers Guild: to help Austin on its way to being known as a brewing mecca. But it’s more than hops and grains and sugar and kegs. Much like in the culinary world, beer making is about the passion of the chef and experimenting with flavors and methods and techniques. It’s about creating something new and that people actually want to drink, even if it’s just your friends at your next backyard bar-b-que. Many of Austin’s craft brewers, including Pishlo and Dusan Kwiatkowski, head brewer at Live Oak Brewing, started in their kitchen or garage, mad scientist style, with a kit and a dream. They focused on making beer they wanted to drink, the camaraderie that comes with sharing a pint they created, and the satisfaction that comes with successfully testing new methods and flavors. Of course, the 5, 10, or 15-gallon payoff at the end of the process isn’t bad either. However, not every batch out of the keg can be a winner. CONTINUED >
