Letter from the Editor
As I sit down to write this letter with one of my dogs curled against me and one of my kids asking me to make him a late night meal, I can’t help but reflect on the beautiful chaos that fills my home with my kids and dogs. This month’s issue is dedicated to just that — the joy, the mess, the love, and the quiet or chaotic moments in between.

My house is especially full these summer days with my college kids home, but that is about to change. August is always a bittersweet month for me. The start of a new school year is on the horizon, and the busyness of fall sports is about to begin. This fall, two of my four kids are heading off to college. One just graduated college, and my youngest still has a few years at home. It’s a strange mix of emotions — pride, excitement, and a little sadness as I begin to let go and welcome this next stage of life. Saying goodbye, even temporarily, is never easy. But watching my children grow into themselves is one of my greatest joys and privileges.
Our pets, of course, offer their own kind of steadfast companionship and love. There’s something truly special about having a pet , They provide a kind of quiet (and sometimes not so quiet), unconditional love and loyalty that fills us in ways words can’t quite capture. They remind us to slow down, to play, and to be present. Their companionship soothes anxiety, lifts spirits, and brings a comforting sense of routine and purpose.
Whether or not you have children or pets in your life, the connection we form with animals, with each other, and with the community remind us of the importance of empathy, patience and compassion.

MALEK AZRAEL & THE VIBEZ

If you’ve been out and about catching live music in Kansas City lately, chances are you’ve heard the name MALEK AZRAEL & THE VIBEZ. Whether you caught their electric set at Boulevardia or streamed their newest release Feels Like..., this genre-blending band is turning heads.
Fronted by MALEK AZRAEL, a singer, songwriter, and producer with deep roots in the Midwest, the group is making waves with a sound that slips between indie rock, R&B, soul, and pop like it's second nature. The story of the band starts where many great collaborations begin: college.
“We all met while attending Kansas City Kansas Community College in the Audio Engineering degree program,” says MALEK. “The band was pieced together in almost a dream-like way. I had spent over a year recording my album ‘WAVES’ and decided I wanted real drums instead of digital, and I had met and bonded with Josh Luke over being from south Kansas City and he mentioned he played drums. I showed him my songs and he immediately wanted to record with me.
ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
“Then I decided we needed an electric guitar when some of my classmates and friends suggested Calvin Haverkamp. I approached Calvin and showed him my songs and he also was moved by my project and wanted to record. After finishing the project a year later, we all realized that we had really made something beautiful. The idea then formed that we should have a release concert and make a band, so we got a bassist and had a release show. Ever since then we have played together, growing as friends and musicians.”
The pieces slowly came together, and by the time the first album was done, the group had become more than just studio collaborators—they had become THE VIBEZ, a band with a message and a mission.
From the very beginning, their goal has been to create music that’s honest, genre-defying, and rooted in the richness of human experience. It’s a lofty goal, but one they pursue with both purpose and passion. Each song feels like a chapter in a shared story about love, self-discovery, growth, and the beauty of living.
Whether they’re playing a small venue or a bustling street festival, their connection with the audience is undeniable. Their recent performance at Boulevardia was a prime example of this. The band’s latest release, Feels Like..., is another bold step forward. It's available now on all major streaming platforms and is paired with a visual project.

“The band’s latest release, Feels Like..., is another bold step forward. It’s available now on all major streaming platforms and is paired with a visual project.”
“We came together because we all aligned with the idea of making music that was honest, challenged the boundaries of genre, and captured the human experience in its variety and complex nature.”

As they continue carving out their place in the Kansas City music scene and beyond, it’s clear that this isn’t just a band riding a trend. This is a group with something to say—and the sound to back it up.
“We came together because we all aligned with the idea of making music that was honest, challenged the boundaries of genre, and captured the human experience in its variety and complex nature.”
So if you’re looking for new music or a live show that leaves a lasting impression, keep your eyes (and ears) on this local band. The journey is just getting started, and it’s already something special. MALEK AZRAEL & THE VIBEZ will perform live on August 22nd at The Ship located in the historic West Bottoms neighborhood at 1221 Union Ave in Kansas City. PASSION FUELS THIS MARTIAL ARTS MASTER’S SOUL.

Benefits of this sport are limitless
ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
A fourth-degree blackbelt, Master David Popper has the experience under his belt so to speak to share his love and knowledge through teaching, coaching and mentoring students of all ages. He and his wife, Andrea, own Martial Arts Institute North Overland Park. Their path allowed them to follow their dream, and they are now living it.

“We want you to be aware of your surroundings and comfortable with your knowledge.”
“My wife and I were corporate event planners for years when we realized the world is not necessarily a better place because we put on sales meetings,” he noted. “You start thinking about your legacy and what you will leave behind, what you did to make the world a better place. A lot of the meeting stuff was going virtual, and we saw the writing on the wall. We retired for a few years then decided to open a martial arts school. After opening our school in 2012, series of opportunities presented themselves and we were able to purchase our current building eight years ago.”
They also offer after-school and summer camp programs which are state licensed programs with the same licensing as any other Johnson County Parks and Rec programs. Andrea handles the accounting and daycare licensing and administrative parts of their business, while David is more involved with the curriculum, teaching and marketing.
He continued, “My path is very different than most people as I started becoming interested Martial Arts in my 30s. I was playing hockey in Chicago, and my kids wanted to do martial arts, and their master asked me if I wanted to do it with them. I couldn’t play hockey anymore, so I came out and started working with them! That was in 1996. I have a very strong place in my heart for parents and kids who train together. There are very few things in life when you are on par with your kids. This can be one of them.”
When he started out, he shared that his family would clear the furniture out of their living room and practice. One of the reasons he has the pricing structure at their school is because he knows how expensive it can get. The most any family ever pays is $300 a month. “So, if you have a couple kids, you may as well jump in for free and do some classes,” he smiled.

He is also very aware of how Martial Arts can benefit children on the autism spectrum or who have ADHD and other challenges. He did his research and read a good article written by Psychology Today talking about how kids with these issues thrive in structure.
“They find martial arts soothing as the routine every day is the same. They walk in, take off their shoes, step on the mats, salute the flag, etc. It’s all very structured,” he continued. “There is not really a lot of time in class where they need to make choices, as the choices are made for them.”
The important thing is that students are out there doing something, whether they are seven years old or 75. He realizes that as we age, physical activities go by the wayside. We lose flexibility and endurance. Even a couple times a week makes a difference and increases confidence. It can be very therapeutic.
“I’ve been doing this long enough that some of my former students stay in touch with me and come in as adults to say hi and tell me Martial Arts set them up for success in other sports and their careers,” he noted.
They also offer women’s self-defense classes quarterly. People can come in to get a refresher course or learn something new. He stresses situational awareness and strategies, avoidance and de-escalation.
“Think about it, when you run away from a dog it will chase you, but if you stand still, he may just bark,” he continued. “We want you to be aware of your surroundings and comfortable with your knowledge. I’ve taught different classes around the city, including Research Medical Center nurses, real estate agents and people in different organizations.”
He and Andrea have a blended family of six, and he treasures time with his grandchildren.
He truly believes Martial Arts can help children and adults alike to develop life-long skills that will benefit them long term and in everyday life with enhanced courtesy and respect.
“From a personal standpoint, it is extremely rewarding to see people do things they never thought they could do and achieve things they didn’t think they could. Once they master a kick or technique, it is theirs forever. They own it,” he expressed.

Sit. Stay. Succeed.

“
“Our self-paced curriculum and customized training plans make it easy to stay consistent, even with a busy lifestyle.”
For many pet owners in Johnson County, their dog is more than just a companion; they're family. And just like any family member, our dogs deserve the right tools, structure, and support to thrive. That’s exactly what Zoom Room Dog Training delivers. A modern, upbeat training experience that goes far beyond basic obedience.
At its core, Zoom Room offers a wide range of training services tailored to meet the needs of every dog, no matter their age, breed, or temperament. From puppy classes and basic obedience to agility, tricks, and even a doggy fitness class called Puplates, they make training feel like play. For pups who need more one-on-one support, Zoom Room offers private lessons, and clients can even rent the gym for solo playtime when the Kansas heat makes outdoor exercise tough.
But what truly sets Zoom Room apart is their positive reinforcement approach and the deep relationships they build with both pets and their people.
“Our team of experienced trainers focuses on building skills during lessons, but also making sure handlers feel confident continuing the work at home,” says General Manager Rachael Yaw.
“We encourage families to be involved. Kids, partners, close friends - anyone who will be working with a dog is encouraged to join for class.”
Zoom Room’s first step for new clients is a free orientation. A no-pressure, dog-free visit to discuss goals, lifestyle, and training plans. For adult dogs, evaluations are available to observe their behavior in the gym and recommend the best place to start.
This personalized, low-stress intro helps ease the nerves of pet parents who may be unsure where to begin. “It can be intimidating to find the right trainer,” Yaw adds. “Just like a vet or a groomer, your trainer should be someone you trust. Our job is to learn all about you and your dog so we can support your journey.”
And the results speak for themselves. Some of Zoom Room’s most rewarding moments come from watching
dogs transform — from nervous or reactive pups who start in private sessions to confident companions who eventually thrive in group classes.
The indoor training space is another major perk, offering a controlled environment that makes year-round training possible regardless of Kansas weather. Trainers can gradually introduce distractions or adjust stimuli to help dogs succeed in a safe, comfortable setting.
Zoom Room also offers a wide range of specialty workshops — from scent work and therapy dog prep to urban herding and recall training. Clients are encouraged to explore different classes using universal credits and flexible scheduling, which keeps things convenient and engaging.
“We strive to be flexible and accessible,” says Yaw. “Our self-paced curriculum and customized training plans make it easy to stay consistent, even with a busy lifestyle.”
But Zoom Room isn’t just a training center, it’s a community. Their Monthly Trainer Talks cover topics like enrichment and separation anxiety, and themed holiday parties throughout the year turn clients into friends and students into a Zoom Room family.
That supportive environment is intentional. “Clients often come to us when they’re struggling or feeling overwhelmed,” Yaw says. “Our trainers provide not just solutions, but a safe space to work through those feelings. We’re here to celebrate every win, big or small.”
Education is a cornerstone of the Zoom Room philosophy. Their team stays on top of industry trends and evolving science, constantly learning new strategies in behavior modification, cooperative care, and beyond. “Dog training is always evolving,” Yaw explains. “And so are we.”
Whether you have a brand-new puppy, a high-energy adolescent, or an adult rescue working through trauma, Zoom Room Overland Park is ready to meet you where you are with kindness, clarity, and a whole lot of tail wags.

Our job is to learn all about you and your dog so we can support your journey.

Children can find peace in the saddle

A horse mirrors the mood of a child and that connection is invaluable
ARTICLE BY JUDY GOPPERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

When a young person rides a horse, that horse can have an amazing calming effect on their mood. For anxiety, the horse is a mirror to whatever we are feeling while we sit on them or are around them, so they learn to control their emotions. This is what Susan Tullock has seen through her years of teaching kids to ride at Tullock Performance Horses.

The benefits are far reaching, and she has the insight to pair a horse with a child.
Some other benefits include increased fitness and health. Any sport brings physical health benefits, and riding a horse or pony is no different. This lessens the possibility of childhood obesity, and we all know the importance of getting children outdoors and involved as young as possible. Horseback riding is a great way for them to be outside in the fresh air, and it is healthy both mentally as well as physically.
Children learn life lessons and the value of perseverance, and when they are out in a new environment, they will make new friends. Riding can lead to social, life benefits and meeting new people can help develop life-long friends. It’s a way to make sure they have friends outside their school friend network.
Talk about a confidence booster! Learning to ride and care for an animal twice their size can empower children. It is a great confidence booster when a trainer encourages and compliments,

highlighting areas where they are gaining new skills and rewarding them for choosing improvement. Riding is suitable for all ages, and especially for children with special needs. Interaction with horses can really help.
“When a student comes to me, I make sure I have the appropriate horse that it is quiet and used to inexperienced riders,” she explained. “We go slow. Some children want you to lead them around and some are okay with just figuring out how to control the horse from the beginning.”
It is important that any trainer stays positive and encouraging and realizes everybody progresses at their own speed. Allowing children to find their own path through usually works best.
At her facility, most lesson programs are going to be an hour every week which equates to about 40 minutes of riding time in her program.
“I want my students to be safe learn and have fun and enjoy learning how to have a relationship with the horse,” she smiled. “I am always pushing my students to do more than they did at their last lesson, which builds self-confidence and common sense as they learn to do things on their own.”
Students that begin riding at an early age and through 4H level can progress to showing on a national level, and even competing at a collegiate level. This is a lifelong hobby and can enrich lives far into adulthood.
Children can often switch between English and Western riding and learn to maneuver the different types of seats. A good rule of thumb for parents is to find what you have access to in your area. The most important thing is a quality horse with quality tack. and a quality instructor.
Susan’s program is more riding based, and she believes it’s important when the kids are old enough
“I want my students to be safe learn and have fun and enjoy learning how to have a relationship with the horse.”
and strong enough, that they learn how to properly take care of their horses through picking of their hooves, proper grooming, how to clean their stalls and properly tack their horse.
“Usually, my students can trail ride before they would ever be ready to go in the show pen. Not all places that I teach have access to trails, and most people need to own or lease a horse to show,” she confirmed.
We are blessed to have a few local charities or non-profits in the Kansas City area that support rescue horses and/or equestrian therapy in our area. You can find them online.
Being around horses also teaches children about responsibility, kindness and compassion, and helps children understand that “someone else’s” needs have to be considered alongside and often before your own. This helps make the world a kinder place.

FOSTER LIGHT
“Foster Light was born out of my own experience.”

Most days, Katie Welch juggles swim meets, tutoring sessions and dinner at a crowded kitchen table. But amid the noise of family life, she’s quietly building something powerful. Three years ago, Katie launched Foster Light, a nonprofit that offers behind-the-scenes support to foster families across Kansas City.
Welch, a former inner-city art teacher and now mother to six, knows firsthand the emotional chaos and beauty of foster parenting. “Foster Light was born out of my own experience,” she explains. “Foster care is taxing work. Fifty percent of foster parents quit within the first year. For the majority it is because they don’t have the support and resources they need to survive mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.”
Foster Light is a direct answer to that need. It is not just about helping foster
kids, though it certainly does that—it is about keeping good foster parents in the game longer, so children experience fewer moves and more stability.
Foster Light’s mission is simple but transformative: keep foster parents steady so children don’t have to keep moving. Because the stakes are high. Katie recalls a young woman she interviewed who had lived in 40 different homes during ten years in care. “That’s a new home every three months,” she says. “Within four years of aging out, nearly half of foster youth are incarcerated or homeless. And the more homes a child moves through, the more likely they are to become part of those statistics.”
“Kids can’t thrive if they’re constantly being moved around,” Katie continues. “The key to changing the trajectory is helping foster parents stay and to do that they need real, practical support.”
“We’re just trying to keep families healthy enough to stay cohesive—and that might change everything.”

Foster Light provides something known as “wraparound care,” a holistic model of support that begins with mandatory therapy—for the foster parents. “Foster kids often get therapy, but we realized our own mental health was falling apart. We were absorbing so much trauma and didn’t know how to parent through it. Therapy made all the difference,” Welch says.
From there, the care plan becomes personalized. Foster Light sends in professional organizers, creates chore and routine charts, provides Instacart memberships, monthly gift cards, cleaning services, laundry help, lawn care—every overlooked need that quietly wears down a foster parent. “The most popular service? Cleaning,” she laughs. “Almost every family signs up for it.”
The goal isn’t to pamper foster parents. The goal is to preserve them. “As a mom, if I don’t have to worry about laundry or grocery shopping, I can be more invested in helping a child acclimate to new norms, help them learn how to regulate their behavior and emotions, and sustain a healthy family unit,” Katie says.
When Katie and her husband Nick’s biological sons were just five and two, their home expanded overnight with three young girls—ages four, two and four months. “We had five under five. It was insane,” Katie remembers. Three years later, the girls’ birth mom had another baby girl, who joined their home.
She is honest about the overwhelming stress and the need for strong partnership. “Nick is amazing and shares the responsibilities. He took over cooking this year, which is my dream come true. We really try to run a tight ship. All the kids have chores.”
Their backyard, however, tells another story. “It’s full of weeds right now,” she admits. “But I have six kids who are thriving. I know from the outside it may not be pleasing, but we are growing something beautiful and vibrant. For now, my kids have needs and we are choosing them.”
The irony isn’t lost on her. Foster Light is designed to aid in exactly these situations, picking up the pieces so foster parents can focus on the deeper work of healing. It’s about creating homes where kids can settle in and where everyone can thrive.
At its core, Foster Light is about dignity. Dignity for the parents trying their best. Dignity for the children learning, often for the first time, what it means to have their needs met.
“Every child deserves clean clothes, a safe space, and someone who looks at them like they’re the most important person in the world,” Katie says. “We’re not trying to change the whole system. We’re just trying to keep families healthy enough to stay cohesive—and that might change everything.”

BREAKING THROUGH Barriers:
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
In the heart of Kansas City, Operation Breakthrough is doing more than just offering help—it’s building futures. With a mission to surround the city’s most vulnerable children and families with opportunity, care, and support, this nonprofit is transforming lives.
Each day, more than 750 children walk through the doors of Operation Breakthrough (OB), many from families surviving on less than $1,000 a month. These children face challenges that go far beyond the classroom. Homelessness, food insecurity, exposure to violence, and the trauma of losing loved ones are all too common. But at OB, they are met with a team that is ready to support every need—academic, emotional, physical, and social.
“Many of our kids have seen more than most adults,” says CEO Mary Esselman. “We start where the needs are greatest.” That means not only offering early education but also providing onsite health and dental care, mental health services, a food pantry, and a clothing closet. A licensed therapist or social-emotional specialist is available for children who need extra support. Teachers and nurses work hand-in-hand, tracking developmental milestones and tailoring education to each child.

“MANY OF OUR KIDS HAVE SEEN MORE THAN most adults ,” SAYS CEO MARY ESSELMAN. “WE START WHERE THE NEEDS ARE greatest .”

“VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS wrap their arms AROUND OUR FAMILIES,” SAYS ESSELMAN.
“THEIR friendship HELPS CREATE THE CONDITIONS FOR OUR FAMILIES TO GROW.”
This holistic approach is what sets Operation Breakthrough apart. It’s not just about helping children survive—it’s about helping them thrive.
Take, for example, the teen who joined OB’s workforce development program, The Ignition Lab, after losing four classmates to gun violence. Determined to change his path, he found mentors and career training at OB. He graduated as valedictorian and is now heading to college to study engineering.
Or the little boy who entered OB as an infant diagnosed with “failure to thrive.” After losing both parents, he was nurtured daily by OB’s dedicated team. Today, he’s a thriving preschool graduate, racing tricycles on the playground and making friends over slices of pizza.
These stories are made possible by the community. Volunteers and donors play a vital role—reading to kids, helping in the kitchen, mentoring teens, and donating essentials. Their involvement does more than meet immediate needs; it sends a powerful message: “You matter.”
“Volunteers and donors wrap their arms around our families,” says Esselman. “Their friendship helps create the conditions for our families to grow.”
Now in its 53rd year, Operation Breakthrough is a testament to what’s possible when a community comes together. And the impact doesn’t stop with the children. OB teens give back too—spending more than 15,000 hours each summer mentoring younger kids.
At Operation Breakthrough, success isn’t just measured in test scores or graduation rates. It’s seen in every child who learns to trust again, every teen who discovers their potential, and every family that begins to hope for a brighter future. And that’s what Operation Breakthrough is all about— empowering children and families to break through the barriers in their way and step into a future filled with possibility.
