experience living in the Midwest, I have to admit I was pretty envious these past few months of my family and friends who live in warmer climates. With spring comes the desire to get out and explore the city more. Dog parks, trails, outdoor patios and parks are bustling with people, and I can’t wait to be part of it. Gardens and seedlings are being prepped, and for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmers markets around town are the perfect place to pick up fresh produce and support local farmers and growers. It all sounds glorious to me right now, as I am guessing many of you can relate to how ready I am to thoroughly enjoy this season. For our April issue, we wanted to feature some of our favorite things about the changing season: being outdoors, fresh food and flowers. We have some delicious recipes provided to you by a local food blogger using fresh, local ingredients. We also wanted

FARMING LAVENDER WOULD MOST LIKELY NOT BE A CONSIDERATION FOR MOST ENTREPRENEURS THINKING OF STARTING A BUSINESS IN KANSAS. For one local family that was not only a consideration but a dream they have now watched become a reality. Joe and Christina Blincoe were living a life, not unlike most families. They both held corporate jobs in Kansas City while raising their three active boys in Johnson County. would take up to five years to fully see the benefits of planting and farming lavender. “We knew this type of business would not be an overnight success but knew it would be worth it,” Christina says. Adding to the difficulty was the decision to farm completely organic. “We wanted clean, non-toxic products for our family, so we want to make sure that is what we are offering to others,” Christina says.

Once equipped with the knowledge of the farming process, they began looking for a piece of land where they could implement their new-found skills. “We wanted to find rest and relaxation for our own lives,” says Christina, “learn to grow our own food, have land to enjoy nature and the outdoors.” It was important that their farm be close enough to Johnson County to allow others to have access to it as well. They found the perfect spot just 15 minutes south of the county line, and Sweet Streams Lavender Company became a reality. Today the farm is a thriving business offering a variety of spa and culinary products, yoga classes and other events. It is still a labor of love for their family. Joe and Christina enjoy having this one thing that is so different from anything in the metro area. They have a passion for their business that is contagious. “We have also become closer as a family,” Christina explains. “We have our faith that keeps us all together, and the boys love coming home and listening to the entrepreneurship success and struggles.” Giving back to their community, customers and fellow small business owners has also been a company priority. “We have supported and encouraged many others to go out and do that one thing they have always dreamed of,” says Christina. “Life is too short to not chase down your dream.” You can find more information about Sweet Streams Lavender at sweetstreamslavender.com 14

I am a creator, writer, home entertainer, recipe developer and culinary storyteller. My motto is “Make it beautiful.” I tend to live and breathe that motto in everything that I do but especially in the kitchen and on a plate. I don’t back myself into a culinary corner of any particular cooking category such as Whole 30, Paleo, Vegetarian or otherwise, yet I do tend to fall under each umbrella in a minimal way. My food is mostly healthy; however, I am never afraid to throw a little butter, cream or sugar at a situation, so you’re going to get a little bit of everything. I like to use simple, attainable ingredients that lend themselves to bright, fresh, clean flavors or that warm your soul from the inside out. I feel this style of cooking stimulates the senses and always leaves you hoping for leftovers or wanting to make it again and again. Everything I make is as organic as possible and as locally sourced as possible. I believe that food is a love language, and we tend to cook and create with our feelings. I think that when our hearts are in anything we do, it shows, and to me, that’s so romantic and beautiful. When we are giving and sharing that love and passion with other people, that’s a whole different level of beauty and romance. And then if we step that up a notch and make that dish aesthetically beautiful, now we’re in that “old Hollywood kiss with the leg kick in the rain,” level of romance. I’m aiming for that most days. I think we eat with our eyes as much as we do with our mouths, so why wouldn’t we make something that looks as equally beautiful as it tastes? CHARRED RADICCHIO SALAD WITH CHAMPAGNE VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS
PREPARATION
+ 1 head radicchio (quartered)
01 | Cut the head of radicchio into quarters and massage

ROASTED ASPARAGUS + SCALLIONS WITH BURRATA AND SALSA VERDE INGREDIENTS + 2 bunches scallions + 1 bunch asparagus + 1/4 cup grapeseed oil + 1 garlic clove, minced + 1 T. capers, chopped + 1/3 cup flat leaf parsley, finely chopped + 2 T. red wine vinegar + 2 T. Marcona almonds, chopped + 1 ball of burrata cheese + Zest of half a lemon + Salt, pepper to taste PREPARATION 01 | Set oven to 350 degrees. Trim woody ends of asparagus. Arrange asparagus and scallions on a foil-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with oil, salt and pepper. Roast for 12-15 minutes depending on the thickness of your asparagus. 02 | Meanwhile, prepare the salsa verde. Mince garlic, parsley and capers. Mix in a bowl with vinegar and oil, salt and pepper. 03 | When scallions and asparagus are crispy, remove from oven and spread out on the plate. Break burrata up atop the vegetables, drizzle with the salsa

INGREDIENTS + 1 lb. Paiche or other white fish (cut into ¼ lb. filets) + 2 cups watermelon, cubed + 1 serrano pepper, thinly sliced (or half a pepper depending on desired heat level) + 2 watermelon radishes, thinly sliced + 1 tsp. black sesame seeds + ¼ cup red wine vinegar + ½ cup grapeseed oil (or other neutral oil) + 3 T. grapeseed oil, for cooking + Salt, pepper to taste PREPARATION 01 | Let fish rest on the counter to come to room temp, about 45 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the salad. Add watermelon, radishes, serrano, oil and vinegar to a bowl and let marinate in the fridge. 02 | Add oil to pan and place over medium-high heat. Pat the fish dry with a paper towel and season with salt and pepper. Once the oil is shimmering and pan is almost screaming hot, carefully add the fish to the pan. Pan fry for 4-5 minutes on each side. 03 | Plate watermelon salad on each plate and lay fish over the top. Finish with a bit of the juice from the marinade and top with a touch of black sesame seeds and sea salt.

CRISPY PORK BELLY WITH MARINATED PEACHES
INGREDIENTS + 1 ½ lb. pork belly + 2 peaches + ¼ cup basil, ribboned + ½ cup Buffalo mozzarella + 1 whole lemon, juiced + 1 T. honey (plus more for coating pork belly) + ½ cup grapeseed oil (or other neutral flavored oil) + 1 ½ tsp. red pepper flakes + Salt, pepper to taste PREPARATION 01 | Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Drizzle pork belly generously with oil, salt and pepper and place on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for 35 minutes then reduce heat to 325 degrees and bake for 20 more minutes. 02 | Meanwhile, add lemon juice, honey, oil, red pepper and salt and pepper (to taste) to a bowl and stir. Slice peaches and add to the marinade. Toss to coat. 03 | Once the pork belly is done, set the broiler to high and broil for one minute. (This will give you that crispy skin you crave.) 04 | Slice pork and plate over marinated peaches, top with Buffalo mozzarella, basil and salt and pepper.

door looks with us to inspire us as we freshen up our outdoor living spaces this spring. "We chose to use the same sectional as the foundation to show how changing the small things can make a huge difference," explains Krzykowski.
M O D E R N The first look is monochromatic and modern. Simple is best when creating this vibe. The key is to not use too many different colors, but layer in texture for an inviting atmosphere. They used black and white as their palette and added interest and coziness with the drapery panels, patterned rug, comfy pillows and a throw for chilly evenings. Adding an inviting chair to curl up with a book and including a tray for entertaining has this space ready for when the weather improves and neighbors come out, so we can all get reacquainted! The modern front door incorporates a runner layered with two mats to create interest. "Think creatively about what kind of rugs your front space might need," Krzykowski says. "A runner was used here because of the double doors, but you might want a 30x60 rug with an individual mat on it for a single entry door." Pro tip: When it comes to modern planters, bigger is better, so pick something that will fill your space well.

"We started with a tall egg chair as a statement piece to establish the look and added battery powered hanging lanterns for interest up high," Wedekind says. "Don't forget about the space above your head. It's a great place to make an impact." Bring the indoors out with this look. Think about what you would want inside your house and find a way to bring it out. Included here in this look are poufs for kids to sit on to play games, and an umbrella stand for guests who visit on rainy days. There is also a boot tray for days when the kids have been out playing in the mud. At the front door in this look, they include lots of color and pattern. There is joy in every Midwest season: bourgeoning blossoms of spring; plentiful sunshine of summer; impressive foliage of fall; and the serene snow of winter. But with each season comes moments of monotony where days are strewn together in endless repetition. So, what is there to do when the clouds are infinitely looming, and moods begin to mimic this same dullness? Perhaps the answer is as simple as finding a cup of happiness amid a lush backdrop. A unique place where even on the dreariest of days a sip of coffee, a touch of greenery, and an uplifting conversation can brighten the spirit. It is within the merging of Family Tree Nursery and Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters that a prescription for curing any seasonal woe lies. It’s called Cafe Equinox. For brothers Bo, Jesse, and Jonah Nelson, entrepreneurship has percolated through their blood for generations. In 1964, Family Tree Nursery was birthed through the vision of their grandfather, Ron Nelson, and through decades of cultivation, the business has grown to include three thriving locations in Overland Park, Shawnee, and Liberty. How To Arrange Flowers STEP-BY-STEP
01 Gather your materials. + Scissors + Vase + Plant food + Flowers of choice — You’ll need greenery, primary flowers and secondary flowers for the arrangement.
02 Remove any extra leaves to create clean stems. It’s okay to leave some foliage, but remember that you’ll also have greenery to fill in any extra space.
03 Measure the flowers against your vase of choice and cut to size. Be sure to cut the stems at a diagonal. This will let the flowers soak up more water and help them stay alive longer.

Fill your vase half full with water. You’ll want to
change the water every three days.
05 Pour the plant food into the vase and stir. 06
Start by criss-crossing your foliage to create a
base. Forming this lattice pattern will create a sturdy base for your other flowers.

Add in your focal flowers, making sure they are
spread out. The focal flowers are the ones you want to highlight. They may be the most colorful, the biggest or just your favorites.
08 Add in any of your secondary flowers. Secondary flowers tend to be smaller and will round out the flower arrangement.

"Into the Woods" last summer at the outdoor theatre
The Theatre in the Park (TTIP) is celebrating its 50th summer outdoor season with a blockbuster lineup of family-friendly entertainment: “Annie,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “The Music Man,” “Matilda” and “The Wizard of Oz.” All the world is a stage at TTIP. From its beginnings in 1970 at Antioch Park to its current home in the middle of Shawnee Mission Park, TTIP has brought joy to hundreds of thousands of people both on the stage and off. That’s what the founders of Johnson County Park & Recreation District’s (JCPRD) theatrical facility and its program had in mind. TTIP’s mission is “to enhance the quality of life in our community by providing a variety of entertainment programs through public and private partnerships.” Today, TTIP continues that mission as one of the largest outdoor community theaters in the country. “While JCPRD has many popular programs, parks, and facilities throughout Johnson County, Theatre in the Park is truly a jewel in our park system,” says Susan Mong, JCPRD’s superintendent of culture. “We continue to invest in this jewel to ensure a wonderful experience by all who attend. Where else is there an opportunity to enjoy a high-quality theater performance in such a relaxing and gorgeous park setting?” Mong says that over the last 50 summers, more than 1.5 million people have enjoyed a TTIP production under the stars. “It is definitely a memorable experience for our audience, and an even more meaningful experience for actors, musicians, and crew members as they gain valuable experience in theater production,” Mong says. Among those involved from the very beginning is Larry Sneegas. He came on board as a technical director and later as producer for 15 seasons. “I remember when there was no electricity, and I got the park to provide electrical power, and I borrowed lighting instruments and music stands from high schools,” Sneegas recalls. Sneegas’ family also participated, including his wife, Marvie, who often served as an accompanist or vocal director on many shows. His daughters, Elisa and Allison, and son, Brendan, grew up at TTIP and all appeared in shows over the years. Allison even met her future husband one summer at a cast party—Dave Borberg, a drummer in the pit orchestra. Now a member of Actor’s Equity, Allison continues to perform professionally throughout the Kansas City area. “Some of my fondest memories include playing the role of Lt. Shrank in ‘West Side Story’ when Alison played the part of Maria. I also enjoyed playing the role of Horace in ‘Hello Dolly’ with Dodie Brown,” Sneegas says. Numerous performers had their theatrical beginnings on the TTIP stage, and quite a few have gone on to perform across the country and around the world professionally, including the Broadway stage. Currently, TTIP alum Nancy Opel is performing in “Wicked” while Ryan Worsing is appearing in “The Cher Show.” Many others who did not go on to professional careers in the arts enjoyed their journey with TTIP for the joy of the friendships that last a lifetime. TTIP Producing Artistic Director Tim Bair came back to the theatre in 2010 after a successful journey as a performer, choreographer, director and producer around the world. Bair’s first show on the TTIP stage was “Applause” in 1984. He served as a performer and choreographer in numerous productions before leaving town to pursue his theatrical dreams. “I’d been away from Kansas City for many years, and my sister happened to see the job posting for executive producer and called me saying, ‘You should apply! It would be so nice to have you back home again,’” Bair said. “I did and the rest, as they say, is history.”

Support for TTIP comes from the community. According to Mong, approximately 47 percent of TTIP’s revenues in 2018 came from property taxes paid to the Johnson County Park & Recreation District. “The remaining 53 percent came from all-important gate receipts, sponsorships, and concession sales,” Mong says. Over the years, improvements have been made at the TTIP complex including improved bathrooms, air-conditioned dressing rooms, improved concessions and a new pavilion for rental use. The biggest “addition” came in 2017 with the opening of the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center in the former King Louie Ice Chateau. “It had been the dream of many folks that we could produce year-round, providing opportunities for creative staff and actors not just in the summer months, but we needed a space,” Bair says. “The Arts & Heritage Center is a dream come true! It really gives us the opportunity to produce shows that wouldn’t be appropriate for our outdoor stage." “My dream is that every person in the metro area associates TTIP with terrific theatre, and we are the go-to option when people decide to do something fun,” Bair says. “Five decades later, we are going strong, and look forward to the day when we get to celebrate our 100th Season.”

Split decisions common after a divorce trial
Most parties want to settle their divorce amicably outside of court without a trial. For various reasons, some parties cannot reach a decision on every aspect of their divorce. Some parties might not even be able to reach an agreement on much of anything. Either way, this can result in a trial taking place. A trial is the only way to resolve a divorce where a complete settlement is not reached. When many think of the concept of a divorce trial, they can resort to mindset of thinking of winning or losing. The view is that one party wins and the other loses. They think of it much like an individual would think of a criminal case. In a criminal case, either the prosecution proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt and the defendant is found guilty. Or, in contrast, they do not prove their case and the defendant found innocent. If the defendant was found not guilty at trial, most would consider that a win for the defendant. On the other hand, if the defendant was found guilty, most could consider that a loss for the defendant.
The reality is a divorce trial is not this simple. There is not always a clear winner or loser. In fact, the results are split decisions in many cases. In other words, one party might feel as if they won in certain areas. Yet, they might feel like they lost in other areas. Take a client who might feel as if the property and debt division result was a win for them. On the other hand, they might feel like they lost on child custody, child support, spousal support and attorneys’ fees. A client in this situation might walk away very unhappy because they lost on four out of the five main categories of issues at trial. Of course, all these broad categories are broken down into very small parts in a divorce trial result. The family court judge has to decide what many would consider small details, like exchange locations, tax deductions for the children, who is covering health insurance, the summer schedule for the children, etc. The family court judge also has to decide the length of spousal maintenance, if it is ordered, and phase down amounts for child support as children are emancipated. They
might have to decide lengths of time for certain items. Take where a party has to refinance the mortgage on the house. Is that to be done with 30-days or 90-days? To some parties, these kinds of details might be huge for them. At the end of the day, a divorce trial result is unlike most other areas of the law. Some parties end up feeling fairly good about certain aspects of the result. Yet, they might feel terrible about other areas decided upon at trial. This is the reality of divorce law. It is also why many will tell you that almost nobody is completely happy after a divorce trial.
