T
he holiday season is upon us, and the spirit of giving and serving is in full swing. This time of year can carry so many wonderful memories and is often a time to celebrate long-time family traditions and make new ones. For some, however, this time of year can be hard to get through for a variety of reasons. There are so many practical ways to reach out to those around us who may be alone during the holidays or may be spending their first winter without a loved one. Even little gestures can go a long way and can make people feel thought of and loved. During this time of buying gifts, it is easy to focus on the commercialization of the holidays, and it can even be distasteful at times. One of my favorite things to observe on Christmas morning at our house is not necessarily watching my kids open their gifts from me, but rather watching them give each other gifts that they came up with on their own. I can see how much joy they have to give something that means something to them. Every year is slightly different, but all four of them give gifts to each other without being prompted. Sometimes the gift is handmade, sometimes it’s a treasured possession that they are parting with as a regift, and sometimes they have spent the little bit of money they have on something new. Regardless, the excitement is always the same, and the personal joy that comes from selflessly giving is so evident on their face. Giving is so much better than receiving. For our holiday issue, we wanted to spotlight how some people in our community choose to give back. There are countless ways to give and serve around the city, and needs can definitely be greater at this time of year. Thanks for all you do in your own way to give of yourself, and if you are looking for more ways to get involved in your own community, reach out to local churches, schools, hospitals, fire departments and city hall, as they often know of local needs and ways to get involved. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

elissa Schroeder, a full-time attorney and mother of three in Shawnee, is used to a high-energy lifestyle, but of late she has been up to her ears in piles of

As the mom in charge of Help from the Heartland, Melissa
and her family have been all over the Kansa City metro in the past few months spreading the word and collecting diaper donations that have expanded into many tons. “After Hurricane Harvey, my children (ages 8, 12, and 14) were begging me to rent a boat to take them to help the hurricane victims in Houston,” Melissa says. As an educated, intelligent professional in a fact-driven occupation, she could see the obstacles. But with the childlike faith of her youngest, Grant, she chose to see the opportunities. Melissa decided to lead by example and do something tangible to bring real help. After discovering that relief agencies don’t provide diapers and wipes to victims of hurricanes, Melissa says she knew this was her answer. “It’s so specific and is an easy thing for kids to wrap their brains around," she says. "Kids understand diapers.” Melissa said her kids got their friends involved and then some schools, sports teams, police and fire departments, and the diapers kept coming. She says after the first donation, the group had planned to use a trailer, but the three tons of diapers was over the weight limit. Melissa says within minutes, 17 kids unloaded the diapers and wipes and reloaded them into a ROB MAGEE OWNER
U-Haul where the donations were delivered to Texas. Then another hurricane hit. And another. After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, Grant told Melissa, “We’re not done yet, Mom.” Grant has been leading the charge with his friends and several local police departments. This future police officer dresses in his own uniform and is treated by the officers as one of the blue family. In October, Grant was featured on KMBC 9 News for his service to his community and his big-hearted efforts. Since then, Melissa says FEMA has requested additional supplies to meet the needs in Puerto Rico, so besides diapers and wipes, the donations will also include water, paper towels and toilet paper. To date, Help from the Heartland has collected enough donations to require sending in a C130 airplane to transport 15 pallets of diapers and wipes, plus three 53-foot tractor-trailers filled with the additional donations.
“Dozens and dozens of local businesses and individuals have sponsored pallets at our request to make this happen,” Melissa says. “We are all just doing what we are supposed to be doing: helping our neighbors. I am hopeful our story will inspire children and adults. Together we are strong.” Melissa believes the overwhelming response to bring hope and goodness to relieve suffering is proof that the people of KC

here are hospital wings across America dedicated to it. We see it covered by local news each night. It’s the ultimate gut-wrenching scene in the latest theater release.
Trauma drives the plot. It gets us to pay attention and then look away just as quickly. As dramatic as trauma is made out to be, it is more common than we have been willing to talk about.
Local Nonprofit Uses Horses for Healing
This is not Hollywood trauma. This is the visceral kind. It’s
the stunting kind that affects your child’s grades at school and his ability to connect with his peers. This is the isolating trauma that keeps a veteran indoors on Independence Day. This is the quiet trauma of folding up a newborn’s clothes that were never worn. Trauma does not discriminate, and it does not hand-pick those who have seen war. Trauma could be brought on by

a car accident, a natural disaster or an abusive relationship. Trauma is highly complex and difficult to treat. Many victims don’t recognize they are struggling with trauma—they are simply getting through one day at a time. All the while, the metaphorical trauma door is beginning to groan and splinter under the weight of unresolved issues. Despite emerging research shedding light on the nature of post-traumatic stress disorder, options for alternative treatments are still limited. This missed need is where Horses & Heroes steps in. When founder Julie Baker launched the organization in 2015 from her living room in Overland Park, she had an uncluttered and profound clarity about the purpose of her nonprofit. “I remember exactly how it felt,” Baker remembers about the morning that the idea occurred to her. “It was like all the experiences of my past collided with a clarity of purpose. My business coach always said that when you find your ‘why’ it will make you cry. She told me that if your dream doesn't scare the hell out of you, it isn’t big enough. Well, I found my ‘why’ that morning.”

Horses & Heroes is an equine-assisted psychotherapy organization focused on a simple vision: to heal the unseen wounds of trauma. Originally tailored to assist veterans with PTSD, the founders of Horses & Heroes quickly recognized the larger need for trauma therapy as unexpected clients stepped forward. Alongside veterans and first responders, clients arriving for sessions included single mothers, adolescent girls and broken families. The implications of a traumatized individual are devastating in their own right, but the impact does not stop there. The families who struggle alongside trauma victims are equally affected, especially when there are children in the mix. These families, in turn, have a direct impact on the health of the community. This is a crisis. The symptoms of trauma can often be mistaken for the crises themselves: loss of jobs, substance abuse, depression, relational abuse, poor sleeping habits, divorce and suicide. Thankfully, awareness of the statistic that 22 veterans commit suicide a day has broadened over the past five years. However, awareness about the spike in adolescent suicide rates is disturbingly lacking. According to the American Psychological Association, the number of adolescent suicides has risen by a quarter in less than two years, now numbering 13 in every 100,000, compared to 10.5 every 100,000 in 2015. It appears that our military service members are not the only at-risk demographic for trauma-related suicide. For the 40 percent of affected adults who do seek help for trauma, new studies have indicated that cognitive talk therapy may not be effective. Inversely, studies of experiential therapies have shown again and again to result in effective breakthroughs. Equine therapy has especially been gaining ground in the scientific, as well as the therapeutic, communities over the past 15 years. Equine therapy ushers in quicker and more frequent client breakthroughs than conventional therapy sessions. This is attributed to the fact that equine therapy requires a client to participate actively in his or her healing. Since it brings the client out of the office and into the outdoors, it doesn't feel like therapy. It is focused on problem-solving and results and provides clients with real-time feedback. 24

Whether clients are veterans or civilians, there is a generally negative stigma associated with talk therapy. To counter that stigma, equine therapy doesn’t require clients to have the language necessary to discuss a specific trauma. All they have to do is arrive. The intuitive nature of the horses takes care of the rest. Horses & Heroes uses horses in a groundbased, team approach. There is no riding experience necessary to participate. As the client interacts with the horse in a session, powerful metaphors emerge. Since the horse stands as the focal point of a session, discussing difficult details feels less threatening. These metaphors give clients crucial insights into the nature of their traumas. Clarity and focus have been the cornerstones of Horses & Heroes’ mission. This focus is what channels Horses & Heroes’ resources

And each holiday season, you have the Kansas City-based trio, The Snow Globes. “One of the incredible things about Christmas is the nostalgia and feelings those old songs bring up in people,” Lindsey Jones, The Snow Globes’ lead vocalist, says. “It’s those traditions that we have every year— making the same cookies, singing the same songs— going through those familiar rhythms.” Photography Tom Styrkowicz
Their audience may start craving familiar songs of the season after Thanksgiving, but for the Snow Globes trio comprised of Lindsey, Barclay Martin and Rick Willoughby, Christmas music is year-round. The holiday season is a whirlwind of public and private performances around the Kansas City area. After a post-holiday break, the group reconvenes in early spring to begin writing,

“We’re crazy busy in December, but it takes all year to
get it ready,” Lindsey says. Since they began playing together in 2011, the group has donated a large portion of their proceeds to benefit a cause they care about. After spending time in Mali, West Africa, Barclay was inspired to form The Wash Project. Since 2013, Snow Globes proceeds have gone to support this nonprofit. According to Malian folklore, using soap on one’s hands would wash away one’s wealth. Today, Mali has one of the highest infant mortality rates in Africa, a statistic that can be directly addressed by the practice of using soap to wash hands. The Wash Project reaches children with the message of washing hands with soap to prevent disease through school and leadership clubs, a monthlong soccer tournament, The Wash Cup and a girls’ basketball league. As the project grew in Mali, so did the need for soap, so a soapmaker trained eight local women and now employs them in a soapmaking cooperative to supply the need in their community. 50

Lindsey says knowing that the band is impacting the lives of children and bringing them joy through soccer and basketball programs makes their work meaningful. “We love Christmas music, but the fact that it’s making such a difference is what keeps us going,” she says.
