Are You Ready Yet? IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE THAT I WRITE AND STAND WITH THE BOULDER COMMUNITY IN SOLIDARITY THAT THE TIME HAS COME TO HAVE A REAL CONVERSATION ABOUT RACISM IN AMERICA AND IN OUR COMMUNITY. We’ve all seen the images and heard the voices of the protesters' outrage against the ongoing systemic racism and police brutality in the Black community. Let’s meet this moment as a community and rise up united in this fight to help transform culturally on what has been a huge failure for decades. How do we do that as a community? We face the ugly truth that racism exists! When

we start to educate ourselves on living better lives towards equality for all. From my own personal experience, I have tried to lead the conversation on race with understanding in hopes of educating those who are unable to fully understand the magnitude of the racial struggle, which turns into awareness. My hope is that awareness turns into action. Often when I am discussing racial issues, even with very well meaning white people, they tend to change the narrative to fit their lives because they are either uncomfortable or because it doesn't directly affect them. For example, it is unlikely that many parents of white kids feel compelled to prepare their children for a routine police stop...to put both hands on the dashboard, to not resist or talk back because it could easily escalate to a tragic life and outcome of death. That’s a hard truth to fathom for families who don’t have to face that weight of fear as their daily reality. Police brutality inflicted on people of color is a serious issue but

people in this country who happen to be black or brown. We need the community to first share in feeling our daily discomfort and fear and only then can we collectively progress. I am proud to be in a community that is willing and ready to tackle these issues. Black people are no different than white people — we only want equality and the same fair treatment as whites. I want my kids to be able to reach the same endless possibilities as your kids. Yes, they have lived a privileged life so far, but once they leave the nest the world is a very different place to brown and black folks. So let's meet this moment with having the conversations, educating ourselves, and listening because Black Lives Matter!

WE BEGAN WITH THE IDEA OF ENCLOSED PLACES/ INTERIOR PORTRAITS. We are both interested in exploring the layers of private spaces in our work and discovered points of convergence in the subjects of disordered eating, mental health, and societal pressure. The collaboration was done primarily through text messages and sharing work back and forth. We repurposed drawings and poems we have done individually into a new format and narrative structure.
E M I LY Emily Marie Passos Duffy is a poet, teacher, ecdysiast, and curator of publications and experiences. Her written work has been published in Boulder Weekly, Portland Review, Cigar City Poetry Journal, Spit Poet Zine, and Iron Horse Literary Review. She is a contributing member of The Daily Camera's Editorial Advisory Board. Her ongoing community collaborations include work with Tart Parlor, Writers Warehouse, and Boulder Burlesque. She earned her MFA in creative writing and poetics from Naropa University in 2018, and she currently teaches in the English department at Red Rocks Community College. Writers Warehouse is co-directed by Emily Duffy and Ellie Swensson: two poets, performers, and event curators. It is a collaboration of our independent practices and a shared vision for artistic placemaking. Our principal year-long residency project is to create a mutual care collective for local writers based on a micro-grant program that is community funded. To spearhead those funds, we are creating a community campaign with the slogan "Talk About Our Sh** 2020." The idea is to battle gatekeeping, increase access, encourage accountability and transparency, and foster community engagement through mutual support. We will do this through events, merchandising, writing workshops, collaborative art making, and education. @duffylala

K A E LE N Kaelen Williams is a Boulder native minus the first six months of his life he spent in Santa Barbara, CA where he was born. Initially en route to a career in mathematics, he began using art as an outlet after nearly failing out of college and a forced hiatus from his previous passion, rock-climbing, due to finger injuries. He graduated (amid significant controversy over his BFA show less than nothing) from CU in November 2018 with a BFA in painting and drawing and a minor in math. After graduating he created a tarot deck, Chaotic Neutral Tarot, the paintings for which were displayed in the show After the Things of Nature in The AKA Gallery in Boulder. He is currently working on a graphic novel while in residence at The Boulder Creative Collective. Kaelen is a visual artist, primarily focused on monochromatic painting and drawing. His work is heavily influenced by his study of Chaos Magick and an eclectic mix of philosophical and occult systems including Buddhism, Gnostic Satanism, and alchemy. @que_dubious

NEW PATIOS, STREET CLOSURES, AND PIÑATA-FILLED TENTS — EATING OUTDOORS HAS NEVER BEEN SO FUN There’s not a whole lot of upside to living through a global pandemic, so forgive us for getting excited about this particular silver lining: we are loving all the new al fresco dining options. The additional outdoor seating is a way to help restaurants mitigate the losses of reducing tables indoors to adhere to new social distancing requirements, but it’s also a boon for diners. With outside being safer than in, and Boulder summers being downright magical, there may be no better place to spend a summer evening during this strange and heartbreaking 2020 than by reconnecting with our community, dining under the stars on a closed-off Pearl Street. “Even in a normal summer, it’s such a great idea,” says Kimbal Musk, CEO of The Kitchen Restaurant Group and one of the instigators of getting Pearl Street closed to cars between Ninth and 11th streets. “We’re excited about it, having that sort of European feel where people can walk around, have a drink, and be around people, but in a safe way.” His the Kitchen and Next Door are both serving in the streets, as are SALT, Jax, The West End Tavern and others on the now pedestrianonly couple of blocks on West Pearl. Tables are spaced at least six feet apart to promote social distancing; sanitizing and cleaning are in overdrive; and restaurant employees, as well as patrons when they’re not eating or drinking, wear masks to keep things as safe as possible. The newly expanded outdoor dining isn’t just a much-needed gift for diners; it’s also going to help restaurants survive. After being closed for more than two months and then re-opening at just 50 percent of capacity, the restaurant industry has been struggling. Allowing more tables outside means more profits, and more of a chance that they’ll still be around post-COVID. “I have to give kudos to the Boulder City Council,” Musk says. “They were amazing. I can’t say enough good things about how they shared the same vision of making Boulder a place where you can safely be outside.” Besides the Pearl Street closure, the city has allowed restaurants to expand seating into parking lots, sidewalks, and lawns. Hosea Rosenberg’s Santo and Blackbelly erected tents over their parking lots, with Santo’s boasting colorful décor and a piñata, because even global pandemics need piñatas. Taking advantage of its new outdoor setting, Blackbelly is doing Sunday barbecues out in the lot, with a menu that goes beyond your average backyard cookout. Think wagyu kielbasa, heritage breed pulled pork, and super-fresh marinated heirloom tomatoes. These restaurants are all still doing take-out, but if you feel ready to get out of the house and fully experience our magical Boulder summers, you’ve got incredible dining al fresco options. “The summer nights are just fantastic,” Musk says. We agree.

TEN MILLION SLAVES: A SONG ABOUT THE MIDDLE PASSAGE
ARTICLE KARYSMA HICKS | PHOTOGRAPHY DARYL LOVE
FROM THE MOMENT HE WAS IN SIXTH GRADE, A VERY INTELLECTUAL OTIS TAYLOR HAD ALWAYS BEEN AWARE OF SOCIALISM AND COULD RECOGNIZE THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS THAT THE BLACK COMMUNITY HAS FACED SINCE DAYS AS EARLY AS SLAVERY. Having grown up in Denver and being raised by educated and enlightened parents, it was inevitable that Taylor would carry that with him throughout his music career.

“It was a shock to the blues world that I was writing and singing about such dark stuff,” said Taylor. “Blues is typically about ‘my baby this’ and ‘I want to party.’” The beginning of Taylor’s music career transpired from his attendance to the Denver Folklore Center—where he would discover Piedmont, Delta, Country music, and a variation of Chicago blues artists. While inspired by this introduction, Taylor felt it important to stick to his nature of being what a lot of people in the music industry deem to be ‘dark.’ “History does get lost,” said Taylor. “And I’m circling back.” Taylor’s repertoire is comprised of songs that tell a story of the past. His most popular song, Ten Million Slaves (2004), is a repetitive piece that depicts The Middle Passage. Taylor attended a film festival many years ago and was inspired to write Ten Million Slaves, after having an encounter with one of the festival’s film directors. The movie written by the director depicted the journey that slaves endured and the 25 million slaves that have lost their lives during the Middle Passage. The Middle Passage was a route that allotted goods to be carried from Europe to Africa. By 1518, millions of enslaved Africans became the largest cargo to be carried across the Atlantic Ocean. During this forced voyage, captives were compulsed to be body-to-body and chained below deck. Due to tight space and unsanitary confinement, starvation, and diseases being transferred, many of the captives did not survive the entirety of this 21-to-90-day voyage abroad. For Taylor, Ten Million Slaves is another one of his many songs that are unintentional. Most of his songs start as dreams or come to him when he’s waiting in line or even while he’s in the middle of driving; however, this specific song was different. After attending that film festival, Taylor felt compelled to tell the story of the black man’s endless tribulation. Not only has he made it a goal to talk about the hardships faced living as a black man in America, but he is also looking to challenge our ideas of what kind of music should be heard and accepted in today’s society.

Watts had this and countless other talks with her children to become “a voice in their heads,” hoping her guidance would keep them calm and safe outside the bubble of their home and community. Her motivation for writing "The Anchor" is sharing the experience of raising biracial kids, but more so to rewrite her narrative and rediscover herself. “My identity has been my kids for so long, but I’m also more than that. I wanted my kids to see that Mom had a life before us; she is a person. To know both parts of me,” Watts says. “I want my kids to go out in the world as more confident and grounded people in their identity. That way they too can reach their endless possibilities.” This is the real dream: to feel seen as an individual while giving loved ones all they need to be self-empowered people courageously pursuing their ambitions. It’s a dream we can read about in books but also go out and live.

WHEN JOE PEZZA PURCHASED HIS 1980S VICTORIAN IN RURAL LONGMONT IN 2018, HE HAD A VISION TO TURN THE HOME INTO A CONTEMPORARY FARMHOUSE WITH A TOUCH OF COLORADO. “The property’s proximity to Boulder while retaining its farmland feel makes it really special,” Pezza says. The Front Range is personified by its landscape’s juxtaposition of vast plains to the east and resplendent mountains to the west, and this home uniquely captures both experiences. It went on the market earlier this summer and is represented by Boulder broker Chris Angelovic of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty. At 5,787 square feet on over three acres of land, the home is a sprawling testament to luxurious rural living. With its magnificent views of the mountains and the plains from every room of the home, the property also boasts impeccable design and interior details that pay homage to its surroundings. “My favorite feature is the way that every aspect of the property seems to highlight the natural open space and mountain views around the home,” Angelovic says. Upon entry, visitors to the home are met by a stunning foyer that serves as the epicenter of the house. “The home is definitely centered around its custom fabricated staircase in the entryway,” Pezza says, “as well as its high loft ceilings and custom antler chandelier.” With an adjacent executive office space, living room and dining area, the entryway leads to a spacious, open kitchen and main living area that exudes modern rustic glamour. A dedicated bar room with TVs and cocktail seating adjoins to this main living area as well. Brazilian granite countertops line all the kitchen surfaces—as well as the bar—while an exposed wooden beam wrapped in reclaimed tractor trailer wood flooring runs through the kitchen and dining room. This statement beam is not the only feature created from reclaimed materials on the main floor. The mantels in the bar and over the fireplace in the luxurious master bedroom are made of railroad ties that Pezza found on the property upon initial purchase.

The renovated bar space is an ideal spot— according to Pezza—to unwind and catch a sporting event. It’s just one of multiple spaces prime for entertainment in the home. While this bar area boasts gorgeous views of the mountains and direct access to the pool and spa area, a private theater room is also tucked away above the attached garage. With a 100inch screen and built-in speaker system, it provides a true cinematic experience and is one of Pezza’s favorite rooms in the house. And when venturing out to enjoy Colorado’s unmatched outdoors is in the cards, this home is situated to provide a multitude of options. “The proximity to Boulder, Lyons, Boulder Reservoir, Rocky Mountain National Park and numerous other recreational trails is ideal,” Angelovic says. “You could have your boat on Boulder Reservoir or be mountain biking at Heil Valley Ranch within minutes of leaving the house. That just can’t be beat.”

“FOR DEBROUX IT HAS BEEN CRITICAL TO PRIORITIZE CULTIVATING CONVERSATIONS AROUND PRESERVING THE PAST AND SUSTAINING THE FUTURE OF THE SPACES DESIGNED FOR THE COMMUNITY.”
OUR MODERN LEXICON PRAISES GRIT, SACRIFICE, AND THE SCRAPE-THE-SKIN-OFF-YOUR-BACK PRIDE OF RESILIENCE. Yet, within resilience, what is often overlooked is intention. Representing an authentic ‘public house,’ people have gathered at the Gold Hill General Store and Pub since 1889. Whitey DeBroux, the Pub’s new owner has taken to the challenge of leading with intention and grace. For DeBroux it has been critical to prioritize cultivating conversations around preserving the past and sustaining the future of the spaces designed for the community. It’s so much more challenging, but of course rewarding, to make old things simply work better. “It is so important that we honor the authenticity of the past. There is a lot of history in these walls, you can feel it” says DeBroux. Take the bar; built from a local fallen pine, the bar top follows Gold Hill history marked in pencil at many of the rings. This intentionality is what attracted Jay Clark, world-class chef and restaurateur, to jump on board as head chef and manager. As Clark puts it “...in a world that is being bulldozed so rapidly into strip malls, putting love into a community space is invaluable.” When COVID-19 hit, DeBroux and Clark had to be nimble in their response, truly testing the balance of past preservation and future innovation. “We thought at first we would have to close but quickly realized how essential we were to the community” says DeBroux. The two quickly stocked the shelves with essential groceries to save trips into town. They organized with Black Cat Farms to get fresh veggies to locals. “We’re here because we love Gold Hill and are so honored to be a part of this community. We wanted to be a resource,” says Clark. The Gold Hill General Store and Pub is the product of the resilience of a mountain community and steadfast symbol of intention. Next time you find yourself surrounded by family and friends at the pine timber bar, be sure to raise a glass to all who have walked in through those doors– the past, present and future.

BRET ALEXANDRA KNOWS THE POWER OF ‘HOME’ AS A SPACE BEAUTIFIER AND HOME STAGER. The Colorado native, born right outside Denver, has watched the city grow in more ways than one. Being a part of the creative and artistic community has inspired Alexandra to grow with the city and put Denver on the map for fashion and design.

As a Design Manager for Guest House, she’s been able to lean into her desire to aid positivity and mental health through design. “It took me a long time to find ‘my place’ in the world and contribute in a way that felt authentic for me. I’ve always been an incredibly positive person who also struggles with mental health daily,” she says. “I’ve been able to create a space that is a safe haven that allows me to be myself, learn myself, and understand myself. I think everyone needs to have a place like this—a place that is home to them no matter what.” The Denver design industry is charged by women and to be a Black woman in this realm is a revolutionary act. Alexandra says, “The Black presence in design is slim. I have made it a point to make a name for myself and Black women. Being a Black woman in the design space means making sure you aren’t the only one there and not letting the ‘status quo’ determine my style.” Because she stands for inclusivity, intentional design and the belief that the world needs every single one of us, her view of the world has shaped her design choices lately. First, with COVID and then with George Floyd lighting up the world, she affirms that nothing else matters to her right now until justice is served for George Floyd and for all Black people who have been discriminated against all over the world. She wants people to never forget the energy that is being created around the

For example, when she was teaching in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a fire broke out and burned both the Black school and the White school. The White school got rebuilt quite quickly, but the Black students were left to go to basements of churches. Quite obviously, Lucile was not onboard. She took action immediately when she saw Black students were being mistreated, and she resigned mid-semester. One of the letters that McLean found was from the principal of the school begging for Lucile to return. “When I started hearing her determination with the racism that she faced, and her determination not to bow, that made me interested in her story. The determination to fight the good fight,” McLean shares. Much like Lucile, McLean’s determination led her to conversations with three living family members, Lucile’s birthplace, children of Lucile’s previous employees, trunks full of Lucile’s possessions and letters, and incredible tales of her tenacity. With many twists and turns in Lucile’s story, McLean traveled across the country multiple times to find the truth of her history. As if every breadcrumb was left for McLean to discover, Lucile lived a full life with palpable traces of her essence behind. With intriguing stories of history on the horizon, McLean continues to uncover fascinating tales of all walks of life. She shares, “We all are historians. Even if it’s a memoir that you write, leave your life behind with somebody to read it. Leave something behind, don’t just leave.”
