Making exercise fun again WORKING OUT CAN GET BORING. No matter how killer the music is that’s playing in your headphones... and despite the 16 TVs you’re watching at once while thumping out another 30-minute treadmill session, the reward is often found in the thrill of being done. Not anymore. As the Lifestyle team explored top fitness trends for this month’s “Active” issue, we found that traditional group fitness classes have been replaced by carefully designed ecosystems pulsing with energy, connection and positive reinforcement. From TRX classes and Orangetheory Fitness to Ballet Physique and YogaPod, the group dynamic reigns supreme. Just get yourself there, and fall in to the groove. If getting to your workout is your big challenge, here’s a tip: the most consistent exercisers, according to a recent study in the journal Health Psychology, are those who are triggered by a daily cue. Something as habitual and mundane as hearing your morning alarm clock can get you to the gym and through your

URBAN FLAIR IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF NEW HOMES IN LONE TREE’S RIDGEGATE

A

WARD-WINNING DESIGN, FUNCTIONALITY AND AN URBAN VIBE UNITE AT BELLWETHER PLACE IN RIDGEGATE OF LONE TREE. Built through a partnership between Berkeley Homes and Harvard Communities, and designed by Godden|Sudik Architects and Trio Environments interior design, the 18-home community recently won three MAME awards and two silver National awards, including one for design.

Offering three floor plans ranging from 2,900 to 3,300 square feet in

the $800,000+ price range, the homes were designed to appeal to a vari-

ety of buyers, says Principal Scott Sudik of Godden|Sudik. “We wanted the homes to have an urban edge while still maintaining a residential feel.” Goal achieved. Luxurious yet livable, the majority of homes feature mountain views, and all are within walking distance of shops and restaurants so owners experience the ease of urban living while still enjoying suburban perks like a detached home with a backyard. What you’ll notice first is how bright, open and airy the homes are, thanks to multiple windows (floor-to-ceiling in some rooms) and high ceilings. “We tried to push the popular open floor plan concept even further with as many windows as possible, decks on each floor to maximize outdoor living, and ceiling heights that average 12 to 18 feet,” Sudik says. Those features help give the homes their lofty appeal. “We also added an exposed steel beam in the living space to add to the industrial feel,” says Alex Jewett, Principal with Godden|Sudik. The homes are tall—three stories—but all come with options for elevators and many of the staircases are broken up into smaller segments of about six stairs. “We didn’t want the stairs to feel overwhelming,” says Jewett. The views, the location, the design—it all comes together in Bellwether Place, reminding you of why Colorado is home.

“The goal is to achieve after-burn.”

ORANGETHEORY FITNESS ORANGETHEORY FITNESS The popularity of Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) can be attributed to the exhilaration of “getting into the zone” just as much as to the fun and energy of group exercise. “It’s science based,” says OTF Head Coach Lise Howard. Based on a five-zone, heart rate-based training, the goal is to try and get 12 or more minutes in zones 4 and 5 (the orange and red zones) to achieve optimum Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) or after-burn. “Members burn about 15-20% more calories per workout for up to 36 hours post-workout,” says Howard. Enter the group dynamic that makes it so much fun. “Members get the energy of the group environment but with the attention of an experienced personal trainer” for a healthy, positive, all-inclusive environment, Howard says. “It keeps you coming back for more—and this gets results.” OrangetheoryFitness.com Orangetheory Highlands Ranch 9559 S University Blvd 303.683.3312 Orangetheory West Highlands Ranch 1493 Park Central Dr, Suite 300 720.996.0461 20

“Many clients feel their ‘happy place’ is at Ballet Physique.”

THE BALLET PHYSIQUE “There is such a strong connection to dance in The Ballet Physique program,” says Ballet Physique founder and owner Kristen Zurek. “At the same time, it’s accessible to everybody—I’ve been doing it several times a week for 10 years—and now, after having a baby, I’m still seeing results!” Many clients become members because it’s low-impact and easily modifiable. “It helps rehabilitate injuries and can prevent injuries,” Zurek says. The studio hires professionally trained dancers who are also certified fitness instructors. “They understand the human body—the way muscles work and respond to training. They’re equipped to give you results-driven workouts that are also very safe.” All classes are 60 minutes, with the exception of the more aerobic Physique Rev, which is 45 minutes. Clients are encouraged to attend three-to-five times a week. Regulars at Ballet Physique attest to the essential strength for living they gain from the focused, core-strengthening regimen. “I just spoke with a client who told me she has a better sense of vitality—that she’s stronger than she was 20 years ago. “Many clients feel their ‘happy place’ is at Ballet Physique. FITNESS BOOKS THAT TAKE YOU OFF THE BEATEN PATH

THESE UNCONVENTIONAL BOOKS ARE NOT ONLY FUN TO

your outdoor experience to a higher level, and expert trail tips for the Front Range —where trail choices are abundant— can’t go wrong.

Small but mighty, this little guide from a seasoned trail runner is stuffed with great information on everything you can think of, including safety hazards, gear for all terrains and climates, sports nutrition, animals that may want to eat you, fitness conditioning, trail etiquette and more. It’s pragmatic, funny and informative. ++ CONTEMPLATIVE HIKING ALONG THE COLORADO FRONT RANGE: DISCOVERING YOUR SOUL AND RECONNECTING TO NATURE ON HIKING TRAILS FROM DENVER TO FT. COLLINS, COLORADO BY MARGARET EMERSON This fun book blends the practicality of a hiking guide with the practice of mindful meditation through a series of exercises that helps readers forge a deeper connection to their environment. Emerson keeps a blog at ContemplativeHiking.com and holds a master’s in ecopsychology: the study of the relationship between humans and the natural environment, and the healing power of our connection to nature. ++ EVERY BODY YOGA: LET GO OF FEAR, GET ON THE MAT, LOVE YOUR BODY BY JESSAMYN STANLEY We often think we have to be the "right" size before starting fitness activities, especially activities that require wearing spandex in a room full of people. Stanley tackles this self-punishing and depriving perspective in her memoir/guidebook on yoga. A funny, blunt and candid writer, she digs right in to working past self-consciousness.
