ow more than ever, our personal style tells people who we are — our political persuasion, our social status, our religious belief, which “tribe” we belong to. We might wish it weren’t so, but according to acclaimed designer Miuccia Prada, “when you get dressed you are making public your idea about yourself. Clothes are powerful signifiers.” Wow, that’s a lot of pressure. Who needs the stress? And who wants to look like they put a lot of effort into their look?

In all honesty, I try hard to look like I didn’t try hard. I don’t mean I ‘try hard’ like I stare at my closet every morning, try on 3 outfits, and ask my husband if this dress makes my butt look big. I mean I do a little advance work so that I can quite literally be ready to walk out the door in 20 minutes. I wait until the rare shopping mood strikes and do a couple of strategic pre-season shopping trips where I capitalize on online sales, local boutique finds, and unique consignment pieces. And then I’m hopefully done thinking about it for a while. Whether you’re a planner or more of a wear-what-my-hand-touches-first type, we hope you’ll enjoy this month’s focus on effortless style — for men and women. The good news is you don’t even need to go to the mall! Check out cutting-edge fall looks you can find at local boutiques, five for women (“Rites of Fall,” p. 16) and one for men (“Sharp-dressed Man,” p. 12).

n a quest to avoid falling into a rut, I venture into Seasons 52 in Lone Tree and find myself asking why I had not yet tried this fantastic
local hub of fresh and exotic cuisine. General Manager Matthew Youssef is the authority on all things fresh and colorful. “We try to bring in as many fresh vegetables and fruits as possible, at peak season, and we try to feature exotic items like truffles from Umbria,” Youssef says. “They’re an awesome product.” I try the truffles on one of their signature flatbreads; they have a very earthy, pungent and deliciously funky taste. It’s almost like crossing something off my bucket list. I scan through the expansive Seasons 52 menu and am intrigued by the possibilities.
A year-round signature item is the Cedar Plank Salmon with roasted potatoes, spaghetti squash and seasonal vegetables. 14

But it’s the Mediterranean lamb shank that grabs my attention, a generous portion that’s been braised for 3-1/2 hours, making it smooth and flavorful. It’s accompanied by the vegetable of the fall: mashed potatoes and spaghetti squash. Complementing this robust ensemble is a specialty drink called the Pearfect Strom, containing Bosc pears, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, Absolute Pear soda, St. Germaine At the bar, with its gently lit ambience and impressive center pyramid of glass bottles, it's always open season for open seating.

says, directing my attention to the gleam of the spacious bar. “We try to use local artisan spirits and local draft beers as much a possible. We want our guests to come in and discover something new each time they’re here. “Since we work with seasonal items, we go where we find the best ingredients for our guests, so we don’t always source from one place,” says Youssef. As the chef, Caleb Benton is well-versed in far more than the preparation of exquisite food; he knows how and when to get the right ingredients to his kitchen. “The wild-caught Alaskan salmon is caught fresh starting in late spring,” Benton explains. “It transitions down through the regions, starting with Copper River, then Bristol Bay, and it keeps going down the coast.” The businessmen strive to capture produce during their “micro seasons,” bringing them to the menu for their patrons to discover. With Seasons 52 extensive menu, there’s likely to be a pleasing offering for anyone who sets foot in the restaurant, where clearly,

Harmony and Peace WHEN LIFE’S STRESSES SEEM OVERWHELMING, RETREAT TO JALAN FACIAL SPA TO FULLY UNWIND AND RESTORE YOUR INNER AND OUTER GLOW. ARTICLE SAM TRUEHEART | PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS
T
here’s an old zen adage that says, “You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes everyday—unless you’re too busy; then you
should sit for an hour.” And for me, life was swirling with business; I could barely sit down to check Instagram let alone spend the time meditating. I was past the point of reasonable, normal stress. To calm my mind and give myself some self-love, I decided Jalan Facial Spa was the perfect retreat I needed to get out of my head and relax. Jalan Facial Spa is in the heart of downtown Denver and centered around helping you restore and feel your best by using Eastern Asian traditions with modern skin care expertise. Every guest at Jalan Facial Spa embarks on a self-paced journey to finding their inner harmony. First, I began my experience with a custom-blended lemongrass tea and a complimentary coconut cookie from Mama Kim—the founder of Jalan Facial Spa and owner of many restaurants throughout Eastern Asia. Next, I was taken to soak my feet in a warm footbath. Because we were in “fire” season, my footbath had pink Himalayan salt, Epsom salt, coconut oil, and sweet orange and clove essential oils to soothe, cool and center myself. Once I felt ready, I made my way into the meditation garden; a beautiful space with cushions and a zen garden to drop into a tranquil state. I noticed my shoulders softening and my jaw beginning to relax. Stephanie, my esthetician, came to get me and start my 75-minute advanced facial. As a novice to facials, I showed my ignorance by getting on the bed belly-first. But Stephanie had a cheerful attitude that helped ease my embarrassment and lessen my stress even more. She examined my skin and pinpointed specific areas that needed extractions or more moisture. I quickly fell into a deep meditative state and fully relaxed throughout the entire process. By the end of the session, all stress and anxiety had vanished. Once finished, I was taken back into the meditation garden to listen to an audio meditation that focused on healing, freedom and acceptance. Once complete, I watched soothing ocean scenes on a screen while drinking a red date tea with goji berry and dianhong. The entire experience at Jalan Facial Spa completely unraveled my stress and helped me enter back into the busy streets of Denver with a little more inner peace.

Parting Thoughts
BOOST YOUR ZEN A SEASON OF MINDFULNESS ARTICLE GRACE ESTRIPEAUT
T
he transition into fall is exciting, but it can be stressful too. Getting the kids back to school and ourselves back to work can make us feel overwhelmed. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Here, are
few tips for achieving mindfulness in under 10 minutes a day.
SPEND AT LEAST 5 MINUTES EACH DAY DOING NOTHING.
Absolutely nothing. You can sit or lie down; just make sure the focus is on you, returning to yourself, your sensations, your breath. No multi-tasking, scrolling through your phone or solving problems in your mind. Just be with you. Breathe. Hint: If your mind wanders, try a phone app for a 3-5 minute guided meditation and mindfulness session. My favorite is calm.com, but you might also like HeadSpace.com or Buddhify. com. Do this for 5 minutes over 2 weeks, and you won’t believe the difference. HIT PAUSE BEFORE YOU TAKE ON A NEW TASK.
Create some space between one thing and another. Maybe you’ve finished a project at work, or you’re between one meeting and the next. Take a moment to be fully present, pause, notice. Take a walk, get a drink - consciously move from one activity to another. DETOX FROM THE DAY.
Before going to bed, give yourself 7-10 minutes to write it all out — I call it a day detox. Just write and write. Let everything go on paper. Get the thoughts and worries off your mind so you can rest. Then rip the piece of paper to shreds. Sweet dreams. BE PRESENT IN YOUR OWN DAY.
Does your day just fly by? You look up, it’s 5 pm and you wonder where the day went. To break the daily grind, try this: Be more aware of your body, your mind, and your breath throughout the day. Become aware of when you lose your intention or when your energy goes into fluster mode. To do this, set reminders on your phone to help you hit pause and return to intentionality. Search your phone under “mindfulness bell.” Program bells to ring as much as you want them to. COMMUTE WITH PURPOSE.
Use your commute time to be present with yourself. Turn off the radio. Let this be a time to breathe through and mentally let go of your day. Or use the time to prep for your day and set your intention. What do you want for yourself? When you’re at a red light take a couple of deep breaths, roll your neck and your shoulders, roll your wrists out.
