At the Holidays, it’s the Thought
W
hat’s your favorite holiday tradition? Pulling out the decor? Sending the annual holiday cards? Making those once-a-year family recipes? For me, it’s my secret, annual fantasy of taking my immediate family to a remote island and exchanging homemade gifts made of seashells. Just kidding. Sort of. The truth is that connections to family and loved ones are what keep me from escaping to a warm beach somewhere. Truly, the winter holidays are when I pause, spend quality time with special people, and vow to do better next year. And my favorite holiday tradition, although it should happen more than once a year, is thinking of my loved ones very purposefully and personally. What would make them most happy? What would make them smile?
Robin and Jodi, on location
It’s in this spirit of “otherness” that the Lifestyle team — which this month welcomed Associate Editor Jodi Horner (yay!) — shared stories of both the material and the spiritual gifts the season brings. Tangible gifts, thoughtfully given, can bring intangible gifts, too. What better way to say “I love you” to the road warrior on your list than with a gift of a cashmere travel kit? What would make mom happier year than filling her home with a fresh floral bouquet every month of the year? For these and other ideas for everyone on your list, check out this year’s holiday gift guide we’re calling “Luscious, Luxe, Tech and Tots” (p.17). “A Show of Tradition” (p.30) sneaks a peek at other families’ traditions and offers ideas for starting your own. And if thoughts of family have you hankering to research your family tree in the new year, you’ll want to brush up on the latest genealogy tips and resources in “Who Am I?” (p.22). For all this and more, we hope you enjoy our special “Holiday” issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together! From the whole Lifestyle team, here’s wishing you a season that’s happy and filled with those who mean the most to you. And a very happy and blessed New Year! Smiles,

Reuse & Rejoice! LET THERE BE LIGHTS PHOTOGRAPHY RAEMI VERMIGLIO

here’s no shortage of Do-It-Yourself ideas online these days, and after seeing these dressed-up bulbs on display, we decided to try this hol-
iday project for ourselves. With its simplicity and sparkly appeal, the hardest part of this craft will be deciding whether or not to let the kids help out!
What you’ll need:
-Burned-out (or new) bulbs in sizes of your choice -Mod Podge (which adheres better than glue) -Paint brush with a small tip -Ribbon -Crafting wire -Glitter!
14
Highlands Ranch Lifestyle | December 2017
ONE
-You will want a surface that can handle a mess--this is glitter, after all! -Set up small bowls or cups to catch glitter and re-dip bulbs if necessary.
TWO
-If you are going to hang the bulbs, we found it a bit easier to get the “loop” on prior to getting the bulb covered in glitter. Using crafting wire, circle it tightly around the base of the bulb a few times, create a small loop, then circle the wire around the loop some more time to secure it.
THREE
-Apply a thick but even coat of Mod Podge over the bulb, then sprinkle the glitter over a bowl. Dip it into the glitter to cover any bare spots. If needed, apply touches of Mod Podge on bare spots and add more glitter. -Dry the bulbs either hanging or on the side. -Optional: Enhance them with snowflake stickers, glitter glue, or edging once the glitter has dried.

“When you’re working on your heritage, it’s not just one family that’s important—it’s the community they lived in. Most people 100 years ago and before tended to live in the same place for a long time. And migrating family members would often follow each other. Understanding what was going on when your ancestors were living is important in finding out more about them.”

hen Maxine and Adam Alcott opened their first floral business in 1986, a small studio west of Santa Fe Drive
that specialized in events and hotel decor, Highlands Ranch as a community was just getting going. “We were watching Highlands Ranch grow up around us, and it seemed like a natural move to open a retail store right there, in the community where we had already established a business.” Since then, there’s been no looking back. Widely known as the “go-to” florist in Highlands Ranch, Abloom has been a bustling bounty of business for decades now, serving occasions that range from corporate events and weddings to individuals’ events and occasions. “Our work is distinctive, says Maxine. “Our customers will tell us they attended a particular event and they immediately knew that Abloom provided the floral arrangements.” So what’s the Abloom signature style? “Our taste is for contemporary, open and airy designs that feature a lot of negative space—curly willow, tied grasses and interesting flourishes,” said Maxine. When asked about the latest trends in floral design, Maxine says she knows what her clientele wants. “I’m always interested in designing more unique arrangements. I’m not worried about trying to keep up with trends.” And finally, what’s the best way to communicate the design or look your event needs? “If you’re working with a florist you like and you respect their work, be as descriptive as you can. Give them the parameters: where the arrangement will be displayed, whether it will be for a centerpiece/display table/coffee table, the shape and size of the table, color schemes, etc. Then let them go to work for you.” Recently, Maxine and her team went to work for us, sharing three unique arrangements for the holiday entertaining season, along with tips on extending the life of your winter bouquets. HOSTING FOR THE HOLIDAYS
GRANDKIDS AND GRANDDOGS WELCOME

for nearly five decades. When it comes to host-
"Granddog" Henri gets cozy by Rena's Christmas shoe tree. At its base are bejeweled stilettos that their daughter wore for her wedding.
ing for the holidays, whether it’s “just family” or for large parties, Rena summarizes the secret to success in one word, “Planning!” she declares. “I take the time to decide who should sit where, which serving dishes I’ll be using,” Rena says. “And, If I’m setting the table for a party, I keep in mind the table gift for the guests.” The couple has also learned to cut the right corners whenever possible. “We don’t stress the food—David buys the food already prepped and I put it into pretty china or serving pieces,” she says.
“Nothing has to be matchy-matchy a n y m o r e ,” R e n a s a y s w i t h a h i n t o f re l i e f. A FLAIR FOR DECOR
The entry hall sets the tone for what people feel when they enter a home, Rena says. “The manger scene is the important part of our Christmas. It’s the first thing you see when you come in the door.” Rena describes her decorating style as contemporary mixed with traditional. “My chandelier and table are contemporary, but I love collecting—that’s more traditional, I guess.”
When hosting parties, Rena says it's important that her guests feel welcome. Specially chosen ornaments are placed on napkins for each guest to take home.
In collecting, however, she eschews the typical Christmas formula of angels and stars. “I love reindeer—I try to collect one every year. My sister-in-law started me on them with a big one from Crate and Barrel,” Rena says. Her other Christmas collectible: ornamental shoes, which are hung on a five-foot “shoe tree” each holiday season. With her children grown, Rena has enjoyed the decorating freedom that comes with an empty-nester’s home, but she still allows the grandkids to use the fancy table settings. “They are on their very best behavior because it is a special occasion, and they want to be like the adults,” she says. “Besides, I’ve had adults break china,” Rena laughs, “so it really doesn’t make a difference who’s using it!”

GET THE LOOK: Gently wrap together pre-lit evergreen garland (Rena got hers from Costco), long strands of glass beads (try Hobby Lobby for lengths of crystal, plastic or pearl beads), and ornaments (the silver stars are from Pottery Barn). “The little sayings from a Christmas boutique,” Rena says. “And this year, I added gold net ribbon—it matches the ribbon I put on the tree.”
TRY THIS: Wrap decorative netting around chair backs for an extra flourish.

IMPORTANT THING.” – MARIANNE KOLACZKOWSKI, MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER.
The best way to cultivate the spirit of the season is by participating in--or starting--a holiday tradition that connects entire the family. Christmas and holiday traditions honor your family, enhance time spent with loved ones, and help us find joy and meaning as the year draws to a close.
BAKE WITH LOVE. Baking season officially started in October, so maybe you’re already in full swing. If not, it’s time to get out the cookie sheets and get to work! You might surprise your neighbors and your children’s teachers, or ship care packages to family far away. The whole family can participate, and you can do your baking during the Broncos games!
TAKE AN AMAZING FAMILY PHOTO. Capture a moment in time, not just so you’ll have fabulous Christmas cards, but because during the activity of the year, all the photos you likely took were selfies, candids,

in-law to daughter-in-law. Kristina makes pierogis with Marianne for Wigilia, a 12-course traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner. Traditionally, Wigilia commences when the first star enters the sky. Families include an extra setting at the table for an unexpected guest, and a lighted candle in the window signals all are welcome.
VOLUNTEER AND DONATE. Pick from a gift-giving tree, volunteer with your church or contribute to a favorite charity. Visit someone lonely, participate in a Secret Santa exchange or plant a tree to offset all those being chopped down. Do what you can to ensure others will have magical holiday moments, too. For the little ones, ask them to help you pick a gift they want, wrap it together and give it away. It will be a gentle lesson in how good it feels to give.

REVIVE A CHILDHOOD TRADITION. By sharing it with children or friends-whether it’s traditional baking from an old family recipe or something small like buying your children a special ornament each year--the tradition will strengthen your family bond and build a bridge between the generations.
