In today’s rapidly evolving world, men play a vital role in fostering balance, strength, and progress. Their contributions as fathers, husbands, and community leaders shape stable families and societies. Men’s unique perspective drive innovation while their emotional resilience provides support through hard times.
Inspired by the men highlighted in this issue, it is the simplicity of being a nice person, providing good company, and seamless conversation covering family life, work, sports, God, and an array of topics that put this June’s Men’s issue into motion and perspective.
While walking my Boston terrier, Baxter, I crossed paths with Brett Russell in the neighborhood. Brett was on a bike ride with his wife and kids. We stopped for a moment, exchanged a few kind words, and Brett introduced me to his family. It was an everyday, simple occurrence, but it is everything. A man, a business owner, and his family. Everything a man needs inspired by the grace of what God provides. Enjoy his story and passion for his family landscaping business, and the Christian faith-based motivation to make Grosse Pointe more beautiful.
I’ve been fortunate to travel many places throughout the world, but when it comes to world travel and life experiences, Mark Wilamowski is on a whole different level. Combine that with so many accomplishments and experiences Mark has had, and the recipe for great conversation is a simple one. Whether hearing about his contract negotiations with governments around the world, bowling 13 perfect games, his master's degrees, or family stories, Mark is an amazing man. My favorite is talking sports with him! Mark brings 25 years of experience with State Farm Insurance and is one of their top agents in the country. His experience and ability to learn about people and provide world class service to them keeps lifelong clients. Enjoy his story and advice to protect your home and belongings.
It’s a celebration of good men in our community! Enjoy the issue and Happy Father’s Day!

A beautifully landscaped property not only complements a home or business, but also enhances the look and feel of a neighborhood. According to Brett Russell of Russell Landscaping in St. Clair Shores, the landscape industry is growing on average between 4% and 6% each year, and it's now an over $180 billion industry in annual revenue.
"New construction is still on the rise in the city of Detroit and surrounding areas, and we are excited to continue to help develop these areas, enhance this beautiful city, and refine outdoor spaces," he says.
Landscaping encompasses so much more than just having a nice lawn. "In general, people want to be outside more," says Brett. "They may want a nice patio with some shade, or an outdoor kitchen and barbecue area."
Synthetic turf is also gaining popularity, especially for people with pets, because it's low maintenance. "We recently finished a
job where we redid all the bluestone around a pool built in the 50s, and laid synthetic turf," says Brett. "Then, we did a nice garden area between the pool and the turf."
Boxwoods are still very popular in the Grosse Pointe area to provide that English landscape look, and clients also like to have an added pop of color, which may come from roses, hydrangeas, and/or an assortment of perennials. The type of plants will depend on how much a particular client enjoys gardening and where they would like to have these plants installed on their property.
It's essential to have an expert guide you. Plants and flowers are an investment, and buying the wrong plants can lead to wasted time and money.
"First, you have to have the right soil, so before we do a planting job, we like to run a quick soil test to ensure the pH levels are where they need to be," says Brett. "Then, we must determine which plants do well in the sun versus shade."
Some homeowners are looking for more natural alternatives for weed killer and other landscaping products. "There's definitely a group of people who want to go with that natural approach, which we're all for, whether that concerns pesticides or using plants that give off certain health benefits," says Brett.
Just as in other industries, landscaping trends change with the times. In 2025, some of the top ones include sustainable landscaping practices that emphasize ecofriendly designs to promote soil regeneration and biodiversity, living fences that use plants and other natural elements, and
climate-resilient landscaping by choosing plants that are able to withstand changing weather. Smart technology is also being utilized for efficient landscape management.
Community-focused gardens are popping up to bring people together and foster interaction and engagement. People can meet family, friends, and neighbors and hold events in these lovely settings.
Whatever the design, Brett and his team will meet with clients to discover their ideas and needs. "Some want a lot of shade or a nice patio to sit on in the evenings," he says. "Whatever the case, we'll do a drawing for them, come up with preliminary pricing, and then make adjustments from there."
When it comes to making residential and commercial properties look their best, Russell Landscaping can handle it. "My father started the company in the early 80s, and after helping him throughout middle school and high school, I joined the business in 1987, right after I graduated. It's always been my passion."
Although Brett handles the day-to-day jobs and goes out on sites, his father, the company president, continues to be involved and is a font of information. "One of the things that really sets us apart from other landscaping companies is our years of experience," he says.
Brett has grown the company tremendously since taking over –Russell Landscaping went from four trucks to 50 trucks and from 25 accounts to a couple of hundred today. They're also doing a lot more high-end landscape installs.
"We're a Christian, faith-based family, and we give the glory to God for our rapid growth over the years," he says. "But, as much as we're growing, we want to keep the bar high for the landscape industry. This is one of the reasons I'm on the Board of Directors with MGIA [Michigan Green Industry Association]. I want to ensure that our team members within Russell Landscaping and the companies around us provide quality service and a good, finished product with great workmanship."
Brett loves driving around the area and seeing the projects his company has completed, and he also enjoys revisiting properties Russell Landscaping did years ago that still look great today. "It makes me feel good," he says.
Others also love what they see - 90% of their business comes from word of mouth. "Russell Landscaping is focused on integrity and professional workmanship while providing quality finished products," says Brett.
Turn your property into a beautiful oasis that fits how you wish to live, and enjoy being in the great outdoors.

For 25 years, Mark Wilamowski has provided Grosse Pointers with solid quality options to assist them in protecting their assets.
“We insure you the proper way, and we handle everything.” Wilamowski, a licensed broker with State Farm Insurance, is passionate about State Farm’s commitment to service , which allows him to stand behind the products he sells.
“We’re top-notch with claims,” he says, and that statistic should be a key factor when purchasing a policy. “You carry insurance, so you are covered if you have a major issue. Odds are, you will never place a major claim, however, if one happens, you will have to deal with it.”
Mark’s advice? “If you own a house, especially in the Pointes, you need the right amount of coverage. It is not just about the quote you find online, it should reflect the right policy for you, your household and your property. The agent writing your policy should know you.” Mark learns about the client and inspects houses before he quotes and writes the policy.
“I can walk through, depending on the size, and take pictures, ensuring you have the correct coverage. I also quote back-up of sewer/drain coverage for basements. State Farm now has 5% or 10% of the estimated replacement cost of the house as coverage amount. Most companies offer a flat $5000 or $10,000 for that coverage, but if you have a nice, finished basement, and you have a back-up, what is $10,000 going to cover?
“The old limits just don’t work, especially in Grosse Pointe homes.”
The next step is sitting down with clients to explain the coverages. “We meet with our clients and develop a relationship. We are straight up with people and detail the costs. When they leave our
office, they understand their policy premium. Our quotes are usually around 100% of the estimated replacement cost of the house,” Mark explains. State Farm’s emphasis is on reliability and response when the need arises to place a claim.
Mark Wilamowski is licensed by the state of Michigan to write policies for property, casualty, life, and health. He holds State Farm’s top rankings for brokers, including Chairman Circle, and is a Legion of Honor Qualifier. He has one of the lowest lapsed/cancellation rates in the area, a fact in which he takes great pride.
“My clients rarely ever leave,” he points out. His clients can call him directly, and Mark or Conrad, his office manager of eight years, offers one-stop support. “I can write reimbursement checks for tow bills right from my office and for other homeowner claims, I can issue up to $5000. People love that.”
Mark also specializes in policies for high-end clients with lakefront homes in the Pointes and throughout Michigan. He writes condos, apartment buildings, and many commercial businesses on Mack and in the Village. “I like writing commercial policies and meeting the owners,” he says. “We don’t lose people unless they retire.”
Mark joined State Farm in his Grosse Pointe office on 01/01/01. “I am glad I made the choice to come here. This is a beautiful, family-oriented community. The lake is wonderful, but the people make it what it is.”
Mark’s father was a State Farm agent for 40+ years, which prompted his decision to join the company. He retired from a career in international contract negotiation, where he traveled extensively for 20+ weeks a year, visiting over 35 countries. He has also visited all 50 states. His office is a treasure
with his wife, Andrea, a Pharmaceutical Clinical Trial Ambassador. Their son, Kyle, is a 2012 graduate of Grosse Pointe South.
trove of Detroit sports memorabilia, including seats from Tiger Stadium, tickets to Opening Day at Comerica Park, and Lions gear. He even has a few players as clients.
Mark funded his undergraduate degree from Oakland University by bowling in Classic leagues (he boasts 13 sanctioned 300 games and five 800 series) and was part of a professional tournament league each year in Las Vegas. He proudly holds two Master’s degrees from Indiana University. Mark lives in Grosse Pointe Woods
Mark’s globetrotting experiences really come in handy with clients. “We build rapport. You need a policy that is right for you from someone who knows this community. Having the cheapest rate isn’t always the most important consideration,” Mark says. “We aren’t always the least expensive but always provide reliable service.” He recommends bundling home and auto, which can save about 32% on the house and 17% on autos; umbrella policies add another $1-2 million of coverage for homes and autos.
Now in his 25th year, Mark enjoys meeting and educating new clients. He can be reached at State Farm Insurance, 19637 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods; (313) 881-8100 or mark@c allmarkw.com

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
• 2 cups ketchup
• 1 cup water
• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
• 5 tablespoons brown sugar
• 5 tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.
