Hi, friends!
If there’s one thing I’ve learned since becoming a mom, it’s that life with kids is both wonderfully ordinary and wildly profound. From early mornings and snack negotiations to belly laughs and bedtime cuddles, these little lives somehow become the center of our world—and the heart of our days.
This Kids & Pets issue is full of stories that reflect that kind of beauty and chaos. While we don’t cur rently have pets at home, I’ve always appreciated how much joy and connection they bring to families. Whether you’re chasing toddlers, tossing tennis balls, or both, there’s something special about this season of life— and this issue captures it so well. I’m constantly reminded how lucky we are to live in a place like Greeley, where families and pets are not only welcomed but celebrated in nearly every park, patio, and community event.
One of my favorite parts is the article about Weld Community Credit Union, sharing tips for helping kids build smart financial habits from a young age (yes, we’re already practicing with piggy banks at our house!). There’s also a thoughtful piece with LifeStories Family Advocacy on how to create emotionally safe homes for our children—a reminder I needed more than I expected. I was especially proud to include the feature on Banner Pediatrics and their warm, personal approach to pediatric care; it’s clear they treat each child like their own, and that kind of compassion truly stands out. And even though my own kids aren’t in school yet, I was inspired reading about District 6’s commitment to better school lunches. It gives me hope to see those kinds of positive changes happening right here in our community.
Raising two beautiful children in Greeley has opened my eyes in new ways. They’ve helped me slow down, pay closer attention, and savor what matters most. It’s a privilege to grow with them in a community that values connection, care, and a whole lot of heart.
I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I do. There’s something in here for every stage, every family, and every heartbeat of this town.
Greeley wouldn’t be Greeley without you.
Sincerely yours,

Too often, children in our community face closed doors and missed opportunities because of circumstances out of their control.
For 60 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Weld County has provided critical after-school and summer programming for young people in our community. We work every day to ensure that we open doors for all our members, equipping them with the tools they need to be productive, caring, and responsible citizens.
While it costs about $7,000 annually to serve one Club member, $20 is all we charge a member for the entire school year. Yet, that can even be a hardship for some. A $20 monthly donation for a year—or foregoing a few stops for a coffee per month—helps cover membership fees for 12 members.

In Greeley, patios often feel more like a neighborhood block party than an extension of a restaurant—especially when dogs are involved. More and more local spots are opening their patios to pets, offering bowls of water, shady corners, and a warm welcome for four-legged guests.
As pet-friendly dining becomes part of everyday life, a few easy habits have naturally taken root— simple things that help patios stay comfortable, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone.
When dogs join the outing, keeping a few of these go-to practices in mind can make the experience smoother for both pups and their people:
Many restaurants in town love having pets on the patio, but hours and policies aren’t always one-size-fits-all. Some locations only allow dogs on weekdays; others offer dedicated areas or amenities. A quick phone call or website check can make all the difference when planning a smooth outing.
Patio outings tend to go best when the dog is already at ease in social settings. A relaxed pup curled up under the table adds to the charm of outdoor dining—especially when they’re familiar with basic cues and content to soak up the scene alongside their humans.
A well-timed snack from home is a great way to reinforce calm behavior. And while it’s easy to want to share bites from the table, most seasoned patio diners find it’s best to keep people food for people and reward their pups in different ways.
Midday meals and early dinners often make for the best pet-friendly patio visits. The vibe is quieter, and dogs tend to settle in more easily. Many locals stick to shorter visits, giving their dogs just enough time to enjoy the outing without stretching their patience—or their leash.
Greeley’s love for pets shows up in the little things: a water dish tucked under a bench, a smiling server with a treat in hand, or the familiar sight of a golden retriever napping beside a patio chair. It’s a reflection of how this town blends casual connection with the company of its most loyal companions—and how, sometimes, the best dining partner is covered in fur.
These local favorites welcome dogs on their patios—most offer water bowls or will happily bring something out for your pup. WeldWerks Brewing even offers dog treats.

Greeley’s Banner Pediatrics Makes Care Personal—With Real Moms, Real Relationships, and Real Answers When You Need Them Most
When your toddler spikes a fever late at night or your newborn lets out a cry you don’t quite understand, you need more than just a clinic—you need a place that gets it. A place where the person examining your child has also comforted a crying baby at 2 a.m., juggled school pick-ups, and decorated their office with Halloween bats and snowflake cutouts just to make kids smile. That place, for many Greeley families, is Banner Pediatrics.
Tucked inside the Banner Health Clinic on 70th Avenue, Banner Pediatrics doesn’t just treat symptoms—it cares for families. It’s a space that feels more like a neighbor’s home than a medical office, where pediatricians meet science with empathy and experience with heart. More and more, it’s becoming the go-to choice for Greeley families seeking thoughtful pediatric care.
“We are looking to create the friendliest clinic in Banner by creating a fun, celebratory, and exciting environment for our families,” Dr. Kathryn Chmura shares. “The doctors are acutely aware of childhood illnesses and the fears parents face with newborns to young adults.”
From the moment you walk through the doors, that intention is obvious. Hallways are dressed for the season with festive displays. New parents receive welcome packets. Big siblings get shiny stickers declaring their new titles. Every corner reflects thoughtful touches that say, “We see you. We’ve been there.”
“We strive to find ways to enhance the patient experience,” Chmura adds. That includes 8–10 daily same-day acute visit slots per provider and prioritized availability for newborns. They know that in parenthood, timing is everything—and they’re ready when you need them most.
This genuinely personal touch is no accident. All three physicians—Dr. Meghan Fels, Dr. Kathryn Chmura, and Dr. Rachel Konda-Sundheim—were born and raised in Colorado. Dr. Fels is a Greeley native. Dr. Chmura grew up in Westminster. Dr. Konda-Sundheim hails from Wiggins. And perhaps more importantly, all three are moms.
“All three physicians are mothers that understand the importance of the parent/child relationship and the challenges that mothers face today,” Dr. Meghan Fels emphasizes. That perspective shapes every aspect of care, turning checkups into conversations and consultations into moments of connection.
While the tone is gentle, the technology is strong. Banner Pediatrics is equipped with cutting-edge tools that support healthy development at every age. Quick and accurate LeadCare tests screen for lead poisoning at 12 and 24 months. Spot Check technology screens for early vision concerns in seconds, starting at just 15 months. By age four, kids begin hearing screens through a fun, interactive process using pure tone audiometry and headphones.
“We rely on real-time results and modern diagnostics to ease uncertainty for families,” Dr. Rachel Konda-Sundheim explains. “We invest in tools that give parents answers quickly and give kids the best start possible.”
But what makes Banner Pediatrics feel different is their presence in the community. These physicians are deeply embedded in Greeley life. They maintain longstanding relationships with Pediatrix, Rocky Mountain Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Hospital Colorado, ensuring smooth coordination if more specialized care is needed. Locally, they show up—not just as doctors, but as neighbors.
In August, you’ll find the team at the District 6 Back to School event, offering free sports physicals. In September, they suit up for the Life Stories Superhero Run, supporting child and family advocacy in Weld County. “Our providers have children at the local schools and are involved with their children’s activities outside of school,” they share.
This isn’t just a job for them. It’s their community. Their people. Their kids.
In a city full of choices, Banner Pediatrics has built something rare: care that’s both compassionate and clinically sound. They’ve created a space where families feel safe, supported, and understood—a place where childhood is celebrated even in the midst of illness or uncertainty.
Whether your child is just starting life or stepping into their teen years, what you’ll find at Banner Pediatrics is more than a provider. You’ll find a partner. A fellow parent. A team that shows up, not just for appointments, but for life’s little moments.
Because at Banner Pediatrics, your child isn’t just another chart. They’re the whole reason the team shows up each morning—with hearts full, hands ready, and stickers waiting.
Stop by and say hello, or bring your child in to experience the kind of care that feels like home. Banner Pediatrics is located at 2001 70th Avenue in Greeley. To learn more or schedule an appointment, visit BannerHealth.com or call the clinic directly.
Toyota’s iconic off-roader enters a new era with the fully redesigned 2025 4Runner—bringing together rugged performance, cutting-edge technology, and thoughtful features for today’s families and their pets. Whether you're navigating the weekday school run or escaping to the mountains for a weekend getaway, the 2025 4Runner is engineered to make every journey safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable for all passengers—two- or four-legged.
Inside the 2025 4Runner, space and practicality take center stage. With available seating for up to seven, there’s room for the whole crew. The optional third row expands versatility, while the reconfigured interior offers more usable cargo space—up to 90.2 cubic feet in two-row models—perfect for strollers, backpacks, and pet crates. Standard rear climate vents help keep every passenger comfortable, regardless of where they're seated. And the signature roll-down rear window, a hallmark of the 4Runner, offers quick ventilation and easy cargo access—an added bonus for pet owners.
Toyota clearly kept pet families in mind with this redesign. The cargo area now features a lower loading height, making it easier for dogs to hop in and out. Durable, easy-to-clean materials like available SofTex or leather-trimmed upholstery are wellsuited for pets who shed or track in the outdoors. Thoughtful cabin storage options also make it simple to stash leashes, treats, and toys while keeping the space organized.
The 2025 4Runner comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a comprehensive suite of safety features including a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure alert with steering assist. These technologies are especially valuable for families, helping reduce stress on long road trips and in heavy traffic. New powertrains offer a balance of performance and efficiency. Drivers can choose between a 278-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or an i-FORCE MAX hybrid system delivering 326 horsepower. With a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, the 4Runner can easily haul a camper, boat, or gear trailer for family adventures.
SMART TECHNOLOGY TO KEEP YOU CONNECTED
The updated cabin tech ensures families stay connected and entertained. An available 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto makes media and navigation seamless. Multiple USB-C ports throughout the vehicle keep all devices charged and ready. The available digital rearview mirror improves visibility, even when the cargo area is full of luggage, gear, or pet crates. Available features like a head-up display and surround-view monitor add convenience and confidence behind the wheel.
ADVENTURE-READY FROM THE GROUND UP
For families who spend weekends on the trail, Toyota has introduced new trims that push the limits of off-road capability. The Trailhunter trim, designed for overlanding, includes high ground clearance, underbody protection, and even an onboard air compressor. On the other end of the spectrum, the new Platinum trim delivers added luxury with features like heated second-row seats and upscale interior touches. FIND YOUR 2025

At Weld Community Credit Union (Weld CCU), financial education isn’t reserved for grown-ups—it starts as early as the first piggy bank. With their Youth Community Savings Accounts, Weld CCU is turning tiny savers into future money masters, one deposit at a time.
From the moment a child opens an account (ages 0 to 17), they’re welcomed like VIPs—with a piggy bank and a handful of Kids Cash Coupons. It’s not just cute—it’s a system designed to reward healthy habits. Each time they make a deposit, they earn another coupon, and once they’ve collected five, it’s prize time! Think maze pens, slap bracelets, bookmarks, and other kid-approved goodies. There’s even a purse-pouch guessing game where kids count out cash and then add that amount to their own accounts— because learning to save should be just as fun as spending.
And as kids grow, their financial tools grow with them. Teens 16 and older can level up with an EZ Checking Account—no fees, no minimum deposit, a free debit card, mobile banking, and interest-earning potential. It’s a real-world account for real-life teens.
For young investors in the making, Weld CCU’s youth-friendly Share Certificates of Deposit (CDs) open up a whole new lesson: investing with zero risk. With just a $100 minimum, kids can lock

in a fixed rate and even add more funds at the 6- and 12-month marks. It’s a perfect introduction to longterm saving, made simple.
But Weld CCU isn’t stopping at piggy banks and prizes—they’ve built an entire financial education system just for kids and teens. Three quarterly newsletters hit mailboxes based on age groups: Coin Collectors (ages 0–5), Currency Captains (6–12), and Credit Champions (13–17). These colorful reads break down topics like budgeting, needs vs. wants, and peer pressure spending into bite-sized lessons. For the younger kids, each newsletter includes an activity sheet they can complete and return for more Kids Cash Coupons. Learning + earning = a win-win.
And for teens? Enter Zogo, a free mobile app that turns money knowledge into a game. Every correct answer earns pineapples (yes, pineapples), which can be traded in for gift cards. Translation: WCCU is literally paying teens to get smarter about money. Just download the app, enter code WELD, and start earning while learning.
Of course, none of this would mean as much without the bigger picture. For every new account or loan opened, Weld CCU donates $10 to local nonprofits like the Guadalupe Community Center and the Weld Food Bank. Because at its core, Weld Community Credit Union believes in growing good people—not just good savers.
With a motto of “people helping people,” Weld CCU isn’t just teaching kids about money—they’re helping them build a future.
J&T Feeds in Full View
In west Greeley, a long-standing storefront continues to exceed expectations without fanfare. J&T Feeds has been serving Northern Colorado for over 23 years, quietly building a reputation rooted in knowledge, trust, and a deep commitment to animal care. While it’s commonly known for pet food, the experience inside the store reveals far more than shelves of kibble. With a thoughtful mix of services, supplies, and personal support, J&T has grown into a place where animal owners—from first-time puppy parents to seasoned horse keepers—find more than they came in for.
Behind the front counter and stacked bags of feed is an operation tailored to meet a wide spectrum of needs. The store carries an extensive selection of raw and freezedried options for dogs and cats, catering to families who prioritize fresh, nutrient-dense diets or who are navigating health issues like allergies, anxiety, and digestive sensitivities. Nutritional supplements are available for every stage of life, including support for joint health, calming solutions, and daily wellness blends. Every item is chosen with intention, and the staff behind the shelves are ready to help customers understand what’s right for their pets—something many say sets the experience apart from big-box shopping.
Beyond nutrition, J&T’s reach extends to animals often overlooked in traditional retail. Horse feed, chicken scratch, rabbit pellets, and products for backyard farming round out the inventory, reflecting the needs of Greeley’s more rural and hobby-driven households. Shoppers can find small animal food and supplies for guinea pigs, hamsters, and other less-common pets. Rows of toys, collars, crates, bowls, leashes, grooming tools, and bedding ensure that a quick stop can turn into a fully stocked supply run, without the hassle of multiple trips or online searching. What often surprises new customers is the level of service built into the everyday experience. J&T offers three self-wash dog stations for convenient, mess-free bathing. These stations are popular with regulars who appreciate being able to clean up their pups without clogging their home drains or chasing wet dogs through the house. Nail trims are available on a regular basis, along with professional-grade dental cleanings in partnership with K-9 Smiles—a valuable service that helps maintain pet health in an affordable and approachable way.
Support doesn’t stop at grooming and maintenance. Dog obedience classes are held on-site, providing owners with local access to experienced training in a familiar environment. Several times each year, the store hosts low-cost vaccine clinics to make preventative care more accessible, especially for families managing multiple pets or rescue animals. These clinics are well-organized and thoughtfully timed, drawing both longtime clients and first-time visitors.
Adding to its community impact, J&T holds adoption events throughout the year. These gatherings connect local rescue groups and foster networks with prospective pet owners, helping animals find new homes in a welcoming, familiar setting. Families often leave with more than they expected— sometimes a new pet, sometimes just a renewed sense of connection with the local animal-loving community. It’s a natural extension of the store’s deeper mission: to support the full life of every pet, not just the transaction.
Located at 3616 W 10th Street, the store welcomes walk-ins, regulars, and curious first-timers alike. Check out their wide variety of raw food, supplements, self serve dog wash, pet food, and live stock feed. More information, including updates on services and events, can be found at JTFeeds.com
“Our first time customers are often surprised when they see what a wide variety of items we carry, especially our extensive raw food selection” -Teri Segelke, owner
At the core of J&T’s success is the team behind the counter. Owner Teri and her staff bring decades of experience to the store floor, offering advice that comes not only from training but also from lived experience. Customers often mention the relief of speaking with someone who remembers their dog’s name, recalls a previous concern, or checks in on how a certain supplement worked out. There’s a genuine care woven into every interaction and a familiarity that builds over time.
The store’s two major sales— the last weekend in March and again on Small Business Saturday—have become traditions for many Greeley families. These events offer generous savings, but more than that, they create a celebratory atmosphere that reflects the gratitude and loyalty between the business and its community. Even during the busiest moments, the tone stays friendly and relaxed, with customers catching up with staff and each other in the aisles.
There’s something steady and grounded about this place. The layout may shift with the seasons, and the product lines may evolve, but the experience remains consistent. In a time when shopping is often impersonal and service can feel rushed, J&T Feeds continues to thrive by doing things differently.

For Cheri DeWitt, owner of Sol Escapes Travel Agency, Hawaii isn’t just a vacation destination—it’s where her heart lands. A former flight attendant and now seasoned travel advisor, Cheri has found her family’s second home on the island of Maui, where sunsets, sea breezes, and shared memories have woven themselves into her most treasured moments.
Cheri and her husband, John, have visited the islands with their four children—Stephanie, Lhandri, Josh, and Saryn—and their niece, Michelle, and while coordinating everyone’s schedules doesn’t always allow for full-family trips, the ones they’ve taken together are unforgettable. “There’s something magical about every day in Hawaii,” she says. “Even the rain brings a rainbow.”
Despite what some might think, Cheri believes Hawaii is one of the best places to bring children. “Some of the world’s best learning happens here. Ecosystems, native culture, history—it’s vacation wrapped in discovery,” she says.
Her top picks include snorkeling, visiting butterfly farms, touring tropical gardens, and stopping by libraries where keiki (children) can learn their names in Hawaiian. “Mine is ‘Keli,’” she shares with a smile. “And my brother Steve? ‘Kiwi.’” Add in night crab hunts on the beach and watching a turtle drift by while swimming, and the memories start to stack up.
Families with a bigger budget can explore Aulani, Disney’s Oʻahu resort, where character experiences meet Hawaiian cultural programming. But you don’t need a five-star property to create five-star memories. “Many of our best moments came from low-key days—picnics on the beach, catching waves, spotting whales,” she says.
Ask Cheri about her favorite family beaches and off-the-beaten-path spots, and she’ll give you a knowing smile. “That’s the perk of using a travel advisor—especially one who’s been a flight attendant. We know the places the guidebooks don’t.”
Still, she’ll spill one secret: whale tours during Maui’s December to April season. “You see the mamas and their babies [and] the males showing off. It’s beautiful and kind of emotional watching these majestic giants move through the ocean with the grace and elegance of ballet dancers,” she says.

“THERE’S
Hawaii can be a splurge—but with Cheri’s tips, it doesn’t have to break the bank. She recommends short-term vacation rentals with kitchens to help families save on dining and walking-distance lodging to reduce or eliminate the need for rental cars, which can be expensive and limited in supply.
If you do need a car, consider booking it for only half the trip—use it early on for adventure days, then return it and soak up beach time near your condo or resort. Many tours offer transportation directly from hotels, so skipping a car altogether can be surprisingly easy.
For food, she swears by local farmers’ markets. “You’ll find fruits you can’t get fresh on the mainland—like papaya boats drizzled with honey and topped with yogurt,” she says. “And don’t skip the Loco Moco; it’s a local favorite that’s oddly satisfying and super filling.”
And when it comes to gear, pack smart. Reef-safe sunscreen is a must (and pricier if bought on-island), and if you’re heading to higher elevations like Haleakalā on Maui, bring layers. “It can be downright freezing up there at sunrise—even in Hawaii,” she says.
Cheri’s connection to Hawaii goes beyond beach days and travel plans. In 2019, surrounded by 40 friends and family members, she married John during a sunset ceremony on the lawn of the Westin Kā‘anapali.
Her brother walked her down the aisle in honor of her late father.
Just as they paused to remember loved ones who had passed, a gentle rain fell—and then, a rainbow appeared.
“The pastor said it was a gift from my dad, giving his blessing,” Cheri recalls. “We said our vows as the sky turned pink and orange. It was perfect. It was Maui.”
Now, through Sol Escapes, Cheri helps other families discover the kind of joy her own has found. Whether it’s a first-time trip or a long-awaited return, she specializes in customized Hawaiian adventures that reflect the rhythm of each family.
“Tourism is vital to the islands, but it has to be done with care,” she says. “Learn a little of the language, honor the traditions, and treat Hawaii with the respect it deserves.”
With Cheri’s guidance, a Hawaiian escape becomes more than a vacation—it becomes a legacy.

Childhood is shaped by the little things—a bike ride down the sidewalk, a bedtime story whispered in the dark, the sound of someone clapping just for you. These small, everyday moments form the foundation of confidence, trust, and joy. They don’t require perfection—just presence, care, and consistency.
Creating emotional safety at home isn’t about grand gestures. It’s built slowly, through choices that show children they are valued, protected, and understood. From toddlers to teens, what children need shifts with time, but the core remains: they want to know they matter.
For young children, emotional safety often begins with structure. Predictable routines—morning snuggles, after-school check-ins, or a favorite story at night—help kids feel grounded. Giving age-appropriate choices, like what shirt to wear or which game to play, fosters independence while reinforcing a sense of control.
In middle childhood, the way adults respond to mistakes carries even more weight. A calm voice and open-ended questions like “What were you feeling?” or “What would you do differently next time?” offer guidance without shame. These interactions teach kids to reflect, take responsibility, and feel safe doing so.
Teenagers need emotional safety, too—just in quieter ways. A shared meal, a drive across town, or folding laundry together can open the door for conversation. They’re more likely to talk when they don’t feel put on the spot. When they do open up, the most meaningful thing an adult can do is listen fully, without jumping to solve or correct.
Across all ages, a steady adult presence communicates, You are not alone. Even in tough moments, children who feel emotionally safe are better equipped to cope, ask for help, and believe in their own worth.
But not every child grows up with that kind of support. Life Stories Child & Family Advocacy exists for children who’ve experienced abuse, neglect, or trauma— kids who haven’t had the luxury of consistency and protection at home. Through its Child Advocacy Center and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program, Life Stories ensures that these children have someone in their corner. At the Child Advocacy Center, children share their stories in a safe, supportive environment designed to minimize trauma and begin the healing process from the very first step. Whether it’s a safe adult to talk to, a trusted advocate in court, or helping find a new service that can help them start their road to healing, Life Stories helps return what every child deserves: safety, stability, and the freedom to just be a kid.
CASA volunteers, in particular, often become the one constant in a child’s life—learning who they are, what they need, and speaking up to make sure their best interests are truly heard. At the same time, the team at the Child Advocacy Center ensures that a child’s first steps toward healing happen in a space built for safety, dignity, and trust. Together, these programs provide a critical foundation—whether it’s recommending a different placement, asking for therapy, or making sure a child has access to something as simple—and powerful—as a soccer team or an art class.
The emotional support many families build naturally at home is the same kind of security Life Stories helps recreate for children who’ve lost it. In both places, love isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action. And when children feel safe, they begin to thrive. For those interested in standing alongside children who need that extra layer of support, Life Stories offers opportunities to volunteer, advocate, and make a difference at LifeStoriesWeld.org.
“Safety is built in the quiet, everyday moments—bedtime stories, shared meals, calm conversations.”
In a time when headlines often highlight what’s not working in public education, Greeley-Evans School District 6 is flipping the script—one tray at a time.
District 6 Nutrition Services isn’t just feeding kids; they’re fueling futures. With a bold commitment to scratch-made meals, fresh local ingredients, and inclusive menus, this department is setting a new gold standard in school nutrition—and the nation is taking notice.
Picture this: roasted chicken seasoned in-house, hand-rolled burritos, and mashed redskin potatoes served hot, with vibrant salad bars bursting with produce—available in every school. It’s not a dream; it’s lunch at D6.
But the impact goes beyond what’s on the plate. Through programs like Culinary Classroom and Culinary Life Skills, students from kindergarten to high school are learning how to cook, read labels, and understand what healthy really means. It’s education that sticks with them far beyond graduation.
“All we want to do is make sure they are nourished so that their bodies are prepared to learn and their minds are prepared to thrive in the classrooms,” says Danielle Bock, director of nutrition services.
And D6 didn’t stop when federal meal waivers expired. Instead, they made a bold choice—investing $2 million of their own reserves to keep meals free for every single student. That decision paid off: over 20,000 meals are now served daily, reaching 94% of the student body.
“To be able to do that, kids cannot be hungry” -Superintendent Dr. Deirdre Pilch
“To be able to do that, kids cannot be hungry” Superintendent Dr. Deirdre Pilch states.
From partnering with local farmers to ensuring cultural relevance in every dish, the district is proving that food is more than sustenance. It’s a tool for equity, community, and lifelong health.
Greeley-Evans School District 6 isn’t just changing what kids eat—they’re changing what’s possible.
