The Investment Issue

Investment is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We invest in many ways – in our community, our finances, our relationships and our health – with the hope that our efforts will have a positive impact in our lives and the lives of those around us.
We can invest in our community by supporting local businesses, schools and organizations, volun teering or investing in future generations. On a larger scale, we can participate in public surveys and get involved in city planning and the future of our town. We can invest in our finances to meet long-term financial goals, like buying that new car or putting a down-payment on a home, and securing our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only us but to the people closest to us.
This year, I am hoping to invest more – not only financially but also in myself and the people around me. The past few years, I have been investing more of my time into learning new hobbies and spending more time with my friends and family to create long-lasting memories.
While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances and with those that we love.
Sincerely,

YOU ONLY GET ONE RETIREMENT
Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. It's often envisioned as a period of relaxation, exploration and deep connection with family and friends. However, this dream doesn't just manifest. It necessitates forward-thinking and detailed planning, regardless of one's financial status. Amid global economic changes, evolving life expectancies and intricate tax systems, an all-encompassing and strategic retirement plan is more crucial than ever.
A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it's equally important to branch out. Dividend-bearing stocks can provide regular dividends, bonds offer both periodic interest and principal return and real estate, whether directly or indirectly owned, has potential for both rental income and value growth. Private investments can also yield passive income and impressive returns.
Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one's overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for tax-free withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.
Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can
offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Available in varieties like fixed, variable and indexed, they often come with tax advantages. However, retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.
Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.
Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), while not familiar to everyone, can be a potential retirement income source. Historically rooted, DSTs offer a form of passive real estate investment, which can lead to regular distributions. They also open doors to 1031 exchange possibilities, offering tax deferral benefits. But, just like any other investment, DSTs have their limitations, notably the lack of liquidity and the heavy reliance on trust management.
Introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZs) were designed to spur economic development. Investing in these zones can lead to deferral, reduction and even the potential elimination of certain capital gains taxes. However, they often require a long-term investment horizon, and retirees must be well-versed with the specifics of the chosen opportunity zone.
“USING STRATEGIES LIKE TAX-LOSS HARVESTING CAN BALANCE OUT CAPITAL GAINS, ENSURING PROACTIVE STEPS TO REDUCE TAX IMPACT.”
Rental Income remains a favorite for many looking for consistent returns. Whether through direct property ownership or Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), real estate can offer passive income, tax benefits and appreciation. Yet, the responsibilities tied to property management, the uncertainties of market fluctuations and other associated costs must not be ignored.
The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.
Beyond the immediate realm of retirement, estate planning emerges. This encompasses not just post-retirement arrangements but also asset distribution for future generations or charitable endeavors. Regularly reviewing wills, trusts and beneficiary designations ensures alignment with changing circumstances.
Philanthropy seamlessly integrates with retirement plans. Beyond fulfilling a personal mission to give back, it also carries financial benefits. Using instruments like donor-advised funds or charitable trusts lets individuals make impactful societal contributions while enjoying tax advantages.
You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one's retirement strategy.

TRINITY LUTHERAN SCHOOL INVESTS IN STUDENTS’ LONG TERM SUCCESS
Alysa Balfour, K-8 Administrator & Lead Teacher
Personal relationships with teachers and peers, intentionally small class sizes and biblical messages about God’s love are just a few of the reasons that families choose to call Trinity Lutheran School home. Parents who entrust their children’s education to Trinity Lutheran are poised with a sense of security and belonging.
Trinity Lutheran is a Christian school and childcare facility for students in preschool through eighth grade. Its curriculum focuses on spiritual growth and academic excellence while anchoring its students in Christian virtues.
Trinity Lutheran was formed in September 1946 by Trinity Lutheran Church and has called Greeley home for over 120 years. Throughout the years, Trinity Lutheran School has received
overwhelming support from Trinity Lutheran Church. Originally, the school operated out of the church’s building on the corner of 7th Avenue and 16th Street. In 2003, the new school building was completed at 3000 35th Avenue in Greeley, and in 2020, it expanded the upstairs of the school, providing an additional 10,000 square feet of facility usage.
Alysa Balfour, a Trinity Lutheran administrator and teacher, believes that Trinity Lutheran would not be the organization it is today without the continued generosity and support from the church. “Trinity Church’s generosity continually inspires me as a school leader,” says Alysa. It is a common practice for members of the church to offer “their time, skills and financial gifts to create a school that is equipped to serve the students and their families.”
With a student to teacher ratio of 11:1, and a total of 85 students in preschool
through eighth grade, the staff and parents at Trinity Lutheran School appreciate the supportive environment that is cultivated at Trinity Lutheran. Gwen Marshall, early childhood director at Trinity Lutheran for six years, enjoys the family-feeling at Trinity. “There is a camaraderie amongst the teaching staff, plus the congregation generously supports the program,” says Gwen. Beyond the generous support of the Church and the tight-knit teaching community, Trinity Lutheran prides itself on the partnerships it has created between the teachers and parents to foster a positive and impactful environment for its students.
Alysa loves working in an environment where she knows each student and their family personally. The highlight of her day is greeting all the students at the door each morning and getting to chat with
their parents. “Because of this personal connection, I feel that in my role as administrator and teacher, I have the support of parents,” says Alysa. “When everyone loves and works well together, amazing things can happen, and I am already seeing the fruits of that in my first year at Trinity.”
As an organization that recognizes that parents have an irreplaceable role in their child’s life, Alysa emphasizes that parents can count on Trinity Lutheran to be an ally in their child’s education. “The leadership and staff at Trinity Lutheran are excited to provide parents a partnership that offers faith, family and foundational knowledge that will serve students well both in their time at Trinity and in future endeavors,” says Alysa. “Parents can have confidence in the academics, faith and values that are instilled each and every day.”
Further leaning into the support of its community, Trinity Lutheran is also home to the Trinity Quilters—a group who supports the school through auctions. The Quilters also host other activities with the kids, such as creating a quilt representing their theme for the year.
“Trinity Quilters leader, Thea Hammers, has helped teachers with projects for Christmas presents for parents and is teaching a unit on color theory to our students this month,” says Alysa.
Trinity’s childcare and preschool offers year-round care and flexible scheduling. Students are eligible for preschool childcare at Trinity once they are two-and-a-half years old. Class sizes and staff-to-child ratios are lower than the National Association for the Education of Young Children and state standards, and all lead teachers have a degree in education. Licensed by the State of Colorado and rated by Colorado Shines, Trinity childcare is open from 7 a.m.– 6 p.m. and offers both full and half day options. Additionally, Trinity’s preschool curriculum is organized into thematic units, providing hands-on activities for children to develop their language, cognitive and motor skills, while including daily Bible instruction and worship.
Trinity Lutheran preschool and school has been home to Tori Coonts’ two children for the past two-and-ahalf years. The teachers and staff at Trinity Lutheran are like family to the Coonts, and Tori feels that they have helped her raise her children well. “I can honestly say that I have no idea what I would do without everyone there - from my struggles with potty training my little boy, to my very sweet and sensitive daughter navigating friendships, Trinity has been there with counsel and love,” says Tori. “We feel safe and welcome at Trinity - we know it is where we belong.”
Trinity Lutheran believes that education is one of the most valuable investments a family can make for their child’s future, and they are honored that parents trust them to be a partner in their child’s development. Visit www.tlgreeley.org/ to learn more about enrolling your students.

Residents in Weld County may know Bank of Colorado as a premiere choice for their personal or professional financial needs. What they might not know, however, is that Bank of Colorado is supremely devoted to providing resources - monetary, time, energy or even space - to give back to the community that has given it so much.
“For those of us who work for Bank of Colorado, community involvement is not just a suggestion - it is a conscious and purposeful choice that we continually make,” shares Kaycee Lytle, Bank of Colorado’s Market President. “We want our employees to be engaged with the community and know what is happening, how it is impacting people and how we can best respond to those needs as an organization.”
Most recently, Bank of Colorado has been gracious in providing building space to support programming for a local chapter of Partners Mentoring in Youth - a non-profit organization specializing in empowering youth to achieve their potential through mentoring and strategic partnerships.
“Through an internal connection in the Bank, we were able to discover Partners Mentor in Youth’s need for space to provide
programming for their students and mentors,” shares Kaycee. “We had space on the second floor of our 20th Street location that wasn’t being utilized to its full potential, so last fall we were able to donate that space to them!”
Since its inception in 1938, Bank of Colorado has been founded on the principles of providing aid to its community and its people in a variety of ways. In addition to serving Partners Mentoring in Youth in this unique way, Bank of Colorado continues to partner with other local organizations including University of Northern Colorado, Weld Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity and more to provide time, energy and resources that strengthen its community.
“Community service is a constant reminder for all of us at Bank of Colorado that all of the hard work we do inside the building simply allows us to further support and strengthen all of the great things and the needs happening outside the building” Kaycee shares. “We are a family-owned, community focused bank that focuses on knowing ourselves, knowing the community and serving them with excellence.”

Anastasia and Adam Johnson founded the eponymous A&A Solar Wash in 2022, after they installed solar panels on their first home in Greeley. During the installation, Anastasia asked the technicians whose responsibility it was to clean and maintain the panels, and they replied: “Yours.”
Anastasia and Adam learned two things from this interaction. First, their solar panels required cleaning and maintenance—they couldn’t simply put panels on the roof and
forget about them. Second, solar panel cleaning was a niche that they could explore. After learning more about solar panel cleaning, Anastasia and Adam wanted to educate other members of the community on the importance of cleaning and maintaining their solar panels. To fill the gap in this missing service, they created A&A Solar Wash.
Anastasia’s top tip for solar panel maintenance is the basic reminder: all solar panels need to be cleaned. The panels must be cleaned before installation, after installation and regularly from then on. She likens it to caring for a car: “You wash your car, you make sure it’s running well, just like most things you own. Solar panels are sustainable, yes, but they’re also expensive equipment!” The best way to care for an investment like solar panels is to ensure routine care and cleaning.
In addition to cleaning, A&A Solar also helps educate owners about maintenance. Another tip Anastasia shares is to check the fine print. Remaining in compliance with the warranty and ensuring the panels produce as much energy as they can is critical. The fine print of most solar panel contracts names the homeowner as the responsible party for maintaining their panels to keep their warranty. Anastasia and Adam didn’t realize this when they first purchased their panels, either.
As a woman-owned business, Anastasia provides a great resource to the community through sustainable practices and puts the power of information in the hands of solar panel owners. Visit www.aasolarwash.com/ to learn more and book your solar cleaning today!

Donate your Prom Dress & Help a Student Have the Night of their Life
ARTICLE BY EMILY MONTGOMERY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALEC STREET MEDIAThis year, Northern Colorado Youth for Christ (NCYFC) is hosting its 15th annual prom on Saturday, May 3rd at NCYFC. This year’s theme: Space Cowboy.
“If we want them to feel like they’re special, they deserve to have this special event.” -Jeff Neel
Every year, NCYFC aims to provide the best prom experience for all students, free of charge. As such, NCYFC is collecting new and gently used prom dresses that will be provided to Greeley High School students in need to have the night of their life at the NCYFC prom.
According to Jeff Neel, Director of NCYFC, their annual prom began after a former NCYFC staff member read an article about the national average cost of prom and felt a calling to ensure all students have the opportunity to experience prom. “A lot of our kids were in alternative education programs of some sort that didn’t offer a prom, couldn’t afford to go to a prom or they’ve been kicked out of their schools, so they weren’t allowed to go to their prom,” Jeff says.
What started as a way to give Greeley students a traditional high school experience, has grown into something much more cherished, especially for the students who often feel excluded. “If we want them to feel like they’re special, they deserve to have this special event,” Jeff shares.
Dresses can be dropped off at NCYFC’s office, located at 134 11th Ave, Monday-Thursday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Dresses can be picked up by students any time before May, free of charge. Prom will take place at NCYFC and is open to all Greeley High School students.
NCYFC is also looking for sponsors to help provide this cherished event to the community. To donate or volunteer for NCYFC Prom, call 970.353.1231.

In the 1920s, field laborers working for the Great Western Sugar Company came together to create communities, called colonias, on land the company had purchased. Soon, they began forming baseball teams, including the team that would become the Greeley Grays.
Often, siblings played on the same team. Grays player Sam Lopez reflected, “I think there was a minimum of six of us playing all the time…And then I think there was just couple other families—the Espinosas, and Gonzales, and Garcias, and Rias. [B]ut the cream of the crop was the Lopez [family].”
