LMS offers an authentic Montessori program from early childhood through high school, adhering to principles and scientific methods for your child’s development.
The elementary learning environment (grades 1-6) fosters independence and focus through individual or small group work, natural lighting, soft colors, and organized, accessible materials. New students quickly adapt to Montessori’s hands-on, interest-driven teaching. The classroom is a vibrant, happy community where students explore, create, and reflect, with teachers offering support and introducing new material as needed. Clear expectations are balanced with openended opportunities, promoting both comfort and inspiration for learning.
Our Secondary Montessori program serves 7th - 10th grade with expansion of grade levels each year.
We integrate rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing students to become selfconfident, contributing adults. Our approach addresses adolescents’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program.
We are accepting 3 new students to join our Secondary program. Students must have a strong work ethic with a positive behavior record.
June –The Men’s Issue
The month of June is many things – the official beginning of summer, school closures, family vacations and getaways for some of us, and of course, Father’s Day!
This month, we're excited to spotlight the men in our lives and their contributions to the betterment of our community. We’re highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard, and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we appreciate you all so much and applaud you! The lasting impact that you’re making and the ripple effect that often ensues is powerful.
An inspirational man has the incredible privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, cousin, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by their greatness, we recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives.
As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smiles can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A dad’s correction and guidance can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad or stepdad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day to you all! And see you around town!

Don't Skipthe Sunscreen!
With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America's most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Gainesville Dermatology experts recommend the daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen, as this protects the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. With an SPF minimum rating of 35, you can protect against sunburn which reduces the risk of skin cancer, helps prevent photodamage and photoaging, or premature skin aging.

A TRIUMPHANT LEGACY BEYOND THE GRIDIRON
Steve Spurrier: The Head Ball Coach
BY FREDDIE WEHBE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAKE IT HAPPEN/WEHBE MARKETING
ARTICLE
Spurrier’s story is still being written — not on the sidelines, but through every handshake at his restaurant, every workout with Jerri, every game ball on display, and every life he’s impacted. At 80, the Head Ball Coach is still very much in the game.
Steve Spurrier sits firmly on the Mount Rushmore of Florida Gator legends. Known across the sports world as “The Head Ball Coach,” Spurrier is a winner in every sense — a Heisman Trophy recipient, national championship coach, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and motivator whose legacy continues to inspire across generations.
Before becoming a household name in college football coaching circles, Spurrier made history in 1966 as the University of Florida’s first Heisman Trophy winner. Selected third overall in the 1967 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers — tied as the highest pick in school history alongside Wes Chandler, Gerrard Warren, and Dante Fowler Jr. — Spurrier laid the foundation for a remarkable six-decade football journey.
In 1996, Spurrier led the Florida Gators to their first national championship. He also delivered the program’s first official SEC Championship and ultimately captured seven conference titles — an unmatched feat in Gator history. Of Florida’s nine SEC titles since joining the conference in 1932, only Urban Meyer has added to the total, winning two, the last in 2008.
Notably, Spurrier remains the only person to win the Heisman Trophy and later coached a Heisman winner — Danny Wuerffel in 1996. He’s also the only living individual inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame twice: once as a player and again as a coach. His statue sits in front of the football field that bears his name, Steve Spurrier Field. He is also a member of the program’s exclusive “Ring of Honor.” His accolades span more than 54 Hall of Fame honors, the most recent being the National Quarterback Hall of Fame in February 2025.
A
LEGACY THAT LIVES ON
At 80 years old, Spurrier remains a beloved figure in Gainesville and across the college football landscape. He and his wife, Jerri — his partner in life since 1966 — live in Gainesville and remain actively involved in the university and community. Coach Spurrier still visits his office at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and frequently attends Gator sporting events. He and Jerri also make regular appearances at their restaurant, Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille, mingling with guests, signing autographs, and encouraging staff with the same energy he once gave his players.
“Running a great restaurant is like building a championship team,” he often says. “You’ve got to work hard, believe, and surround yourself with great people — from cooks and servers to dishwashers and bartenders.”
The restaurant, one of the top celebrity-owned establishments in the country, is a destination not just for great food, but for Gator pride. It doubles as a hybrid museum, featuring memorabilia from Spurrier’s illustrious career and from other Gator greats. The Heisman Trophy, 14 championship rings, the cleats he wore in his iconic 40-yard game-winning field goal against Auburn in 1966, and countless game balls are among the highlights on display.
The “Championship Room” is a fan favorite — lined with portraits of the 20 Gator coaches who’ve won all 49 University of Florida national titles, including the latest by men’s basketball coach Todd Golden in 2025. The artwork is curated by James Bates, captain of the 1996 football team and one of Spurrier’s former players.

FROM GRIDIRON TO GRILLE
Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille sources local ingredients from farms and vendors across Florida.
The “from-scratch” kitchen partners with Quincy Cattle Farms, Alachua Greens, First Magnitude Brewery, Hawthorne Creek Creamery, Opus Coffee, and more. The menu is packed with nostalgic flair — from the Ike Hilliard Catch of the Day and Emory & Henry Seafood Pasta, to drinks like The Kick (named for Spurrier’s famous field goal), the SOS, CiTrUs 75, and the 52- 20 Pale Ale, a tribute to Florida’s first national title score.
Spurrier’s commitment to health and fitness is as sharp as ever. Despite some arthritis from his playing days, he maintains an active lifestyle with daily workouts — focusing on core strength, light weights, and stationary biking. He and Jerri, a former aerobics instructor, walk daily and ensure every travel destination includes access to a gym and walking trails. Their passion for wellness is reflected in both their lifestyle and their restaurant’s commitment to clean, nutritious food.
A LIFE OF GIVING BACK
Off the field and beyond the kitchen, Steve and Jerri Spurrier are steadfast community supporters. They actively champion numerous causes, including
the American Cancer Society, Ronald McDonald House, American Heart Association, Bread of the Mighty Food Bank, Tyler’s Hope, and many others.
Spurrier also remains a prominent figure in football media and storytelling. He’s been featured in countless interviews, documentaries, and videos, most notably The Believer: The Life and Career of Steve Spurrier, an ESPN film produced by country music star Kenny Chesney and Nashville filmmaker Shaun Silva. The documentary aired on SEC Network in 2014, capturing Spurrier’s fearless career and influence as a coach for both Florida and South Carolina.
FOREVER A GATOR
Though retired from coaching, Spurrier continues to represent the Gator Nation proudly, attending Heisman ceremonies annually and staying connected to fans, players, and alumni alike. His life’s work — from Science Hill High School and the San Francisco 49ers to the University of Florida, Duke, South Carolina, Tampa Bay Bucs, Tampa Bay Bandits, Washington Commanders, and the short-lived but successful Orlando Apollos — stands as a testament to leadership, grit, and enduring passion.

4 0 YEARSOF CUSTOMJEWEL R Y
PASSION, ARTISTRY, AND LASTING MEMORIES THROUGH PERSONALIZED GEMSTONE DESIGN.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEARSE HAYES
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR JEWELRY STORE, AND HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY IN THE INDUSTRY BEGIN?
I was working for a national chain jewelry store and after a few months I thought I can do this better by making people custom jewelry exactly the way they want it and not some overseas piece of stock jewelry that is made with at best ok quality gemstones. I found a highly experienced jeweler (28 years making jewelry) who worked for Rutherford’s Jewelers and the owner was getting ready to retire and close the store. So, I made the jeweler an offer to work with me to make custom jewelry. I was already a Gemologist, so I knew about the gemstones, and he knew how to make jewelry, together we made a complete custom jewelry store. I also went to jewelry trade school and learned to make jewelry myself and with the guidance of my master jeweler, I learned the art of making jewelry as well, which gave me the proper skills to be able to design beautiful jewelry that is also structurally sound and won’t fall apart. The first few years were a challenge, but we made it, and now 40 years later, we have a very loyal following so we must be doing something right!
OVER THE PAST FOUR DECADES, HOW HAS YOUR STORE EVOLVED WITH TRENDS AND CUSTOMER NEEDS?
40 years ago, the jewelry business was completely different. I think it was actually more difficult than it is today, many
jewelry stores are designing pieces of jewelry using CAD computer software which isn’t bad in itself, if you know how to make jewelry by hand but if you have never actually made jewelry by hand then you probably don’t know how to make it structurally well. Just because it looks good on a computer screen doesn’t mean it will hold up well in real life. 40 years ago, there was no social media and today if you have zero social media presence you will probably fade away. People want to read reviews and see what other people have to say about your business. My two wonderful daughters, Carol and Sarah, have guided me through these new and changing times. Both of them have assisted me greatly in keeping the store moving forward in the right direction. Of course they both grew up in the store and probably know how to run a jewelry store better than most for that reason but they definitely need to have credit given to them in keeping me straight in these changing times. Both of them have been traveling with me on gem buying trips from a very early age and I really do rely on their help when traveling. They both have very good natural instincts. And yes, one of them is my favorite daughter and she knows who she is! LOL
WHAT TYPES OF JEWELRY OR SERVICES ARE YOU MOST PROUD TO OFFER, AND WHAT SETS YOUR STORE APART?
There are a few things that I believe we do very well and making custom jewelry
is definitely one of them but dealing with colored gemstones sets us apart from many other jewelry stores. I LOVE colored gemstones; diamonds are nice but colored gemstones are wonderful in my opinion. To see a really high-quality Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Tanzanite, or any gemstones makes you realize why people have loved fine jewelry throughout the ages. Even inexpensive gemstones look amazing when they are of very high quality and the large chain stores can’t carry these because they need a gemstone that they can literally have 10,000 of them all at the same cost to put in their 3,000 stores. How rare can that gemstone be if they can get 10,000 of them all identical? Many gemstones I sell are still very rare and unique. To find another one just like it would not be easy because in the very high quality gemstones, Nature is not a factory, you just can’t turn on a machine and make high quality NATURAL gemstones, they are legitimately rare, and in some cases much more rare than a diamond of high quality.
CAN YOU SHARE A FAVORITE MEMORY OR CUSTOM PIECE THAT HOLDS SPECIAL MEANING FOR YOU?
This is a very difficult question to answer because in 40 years of making high quality gemstone jewelry, there are many pieces that I love but the most important factor is not whether I love it but whether the client that commissions us to make their family heirloom is in love with it. If the client walks out of our store thrilled with the new heirloom that we made for them, then I am happy because that is what
we are supposed to do! We make the client happy first and foremost.
HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS BECOME PART OF THE COMMUNITY, AND WHAT DOES THAT RELATIONSHIP MEAN TO YOU?
Over the years we have donated many items for charity events and it gives me great pleasure knowing that someone received a beautiful piece of jewelry and we have also help an organization raise money for a worthy cause!
LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR STORE AND YOUR LEGACY?
I am not sure what lies ahead for our business because 40 years ago I would not have thought that we would be where we are now. When I first started, I don’t think I thought about the future at all in any meaningful way when I was first starting out. I mean I did look ahead but it was for survival reasons not for legacy reasons. I was just looking ahead to make sure we were going in the right direction and keeping up with the times and changes.
Only recently have I given any thought to what happens after me, and I am not sure what the answer is but it will work itself out, as I have always been blessed. I doubt any great business thinks, “what will my legacy be” in the beginning or even the middle. These businesses, as myself, just want to provide a great product that their clients will love, and the rest just follows if you are doing things correctly.

Corey Amira, Gainesville Home Builder
EXTERIOR:
This home’s exterior channels a modern farmhouse feel with vertical board and batten siding and a standing seam metal roof. The color palette is bold and unified—dark bronze walls, roof, and window trim create a sleek, dramatic look. Warmth and character come from the wood accents featured on the porch columns and beams, offering a striking contrast to the darker elements and enhancing the home’s curb appeal.
INTERIOR:
Inside, the home showcases a warm, rustic design. Roughly half of the interior is clad in stained cypress tongue and groove. The main living area features on-site stained glu-lam timber trusses, creating vaulted ceilings and supporting a 30-foot stone fireplace. A spacious loft, framed with custom welded metal railing, adds functionality and unique character to the interior.

LOCAL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEUR AND FOUNDING PARTNER OF SCHACKOW & MERCADANTE, P.A. LAW FIRM.
GERALD SCHACKOW
BY CHRIS WATKINS
Gerald “Jerry” Schackow
Gerald “Jerry” Schackow has been practicing law in Gainesville since 1965, beginning as a criminal defense and family law attorney before spearheading the local personal-injury firm Schackow & Mercadante, P.A. Over the past 60 years, Jerry has success-
won one of the largest verdicts ever awarded in Florida at that time. The jury awarded his client $1.5 million, a result few lawyers could accomplish at that time. Although Mr. Schackow started his journey as a criminal defense attorney and family law attor-
“HIS HUMOR AND DOWN-TO-EARTH STYLE ARE UNIQUE AMONG HIS INDUSTRY.”
fully launched multiple businesses, including Athletic Attic (1971-1998) and Brody’s Frozen Yogurt Stores (19802002). He started Athletic Attic with Olympic track coach Jimmy Carnes and then world-record-holding runner Marty Liquori. The three men were friends and together decided to open an athletic business selling running shoes and other athletic merchandise. The company started in a small store’s attic, hence the name, and quickly expanded to more than 300 shops in America and worldwide. After 25 years, the business was acquired by a large conglomerate. Athletic Attic was one of the first stores to realize the “jogging craze” in the USA that started in the 1970s.
Another highlight of Mr. Schackow’s career would be in 1977 when he
ney (he wrote the “Florida Family Law Practice Manual,” which is still a well-used publication), he has exclusively practiced in personal injury law since 1980 when his law partner Steve Mercadante joined him. He loves the Gainesville community, and especially the Gator Nation. In 2017, he made a sizeable donation to UF Levin College of Law, to which they thanked him by naming the admissions office after him. His humor and down-toearth style are unique among his industry, making him a well-loved and respected pillar in our community. He loves staying physically active, and you can find him playing pickleball or cycling around town. Even though Gainesville has changed since the 1960s, Jerry’s compassionate heart has stayed the same.
AGING Made Simple
Staying Strong and Energetic After 50: Maintaining Health and Vitality Post Middle Age
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DR HEATHER HARDIN
Want to stay healthy and vibrant as you age? It’s a common goal for many men! While there’s no single magic bullet, the recipe for aging well involves a few key ingredients.
First, keep your muscles strong. As men age, they naturally lose muscle mass. A fitness routine that includes both strength training and cardio is a winner, boosting not just your muscles but also your brain health, heart health, and musculoskeletal stability.
Next up: nutrition. Fuel your body with nutrient-rich, whole foods. Limit processed foods and those that might contain hormones and pesticides. Choosing organic and grass-fed options can really support your long-term well-being.
Don’t underestimate stress! Chronic stress can weaken your immune system, increase inflammation, and can lead to insomnia and brain fog. Finding ways
to relax, enjoy life, and let go of negativity is a big plus for your overall health.
As men age, keeping an eye on prostate health is vital. Prostate enlargement and even prostate cancer can become concerns. Plus, changes in sexual health and lower testosterone can affect how energetic you feel.
The good news? Eating well, staying active, and keeping stress in check does more than just boost your overall health. It can also be a real plus for your prostate and sexual well-being, which can definitely help you feel more confident and vital!
Finally, certain vitamin and herbal supplements have shown to benefit testosterone levels, prostate health, brain and immune health. To determine which are best for you, reach out to a trained naturopath (like Dr Heather).
Take charge of your health and aim for a strong and vibrant future.

Dear Old Dad
June is the month that gives fathers a chance to be honored and appreciated. A good father is known to be one who is important to the emotional, material, and physical wellbeing of his children. Grandfathers and other men other than the actual father can also fit this role.
These days fathers have taken on more of a role in the family other than just a traditional bread winner. New research is showing that mothers and fathers play a more similar part in their children’s adjustment than dissimilar.
Fathers are more and more taking on a nurturing role as society changes and is giving way to a team parenting style. I have personally seen how fathers are playing a more prominent role in their children’s schooling by attending more parent-teacher conferences, joining their children for lunch, driving on field trips, and dropping off and picking up
their children from school. Sometimes it is a father who first comes to look at the school to decide whether the school will be a good match for his children.
Father’s Day is celebrated all over the world, albeit on different dates and in different ways. The common thread is to honor your father for his support and love. This can be done by making him a gift or spending time together playing a game. It has been said the best way to spell “love” is T-I-M-E.
President Richard Nixon made it a permanent national holiday by signing it into law in 1972. However, the first Father’s Day card is said to have been one carved out of clay wishing a father good health and long life. This card was made 4000 years ago in Babylon!
Have a Happy Father’s Day everyone. And dads, enjoy your neckties and your children; they grow up very quickly. https://www.millhopper.com/
