Kids & Pets
Exceptional kids. Exceptional education. Exceptional experiences. We’ve decided to put our focus on some outstanding community members and organizations for this year’s Kids & Pets Edition and we think you are in for a treat.
What we keep finding in our journey as a local publication is that there are so many people in Frederick County that go the extra mile. People who don’t just say they care but show it through their actions and how they spend their time and resources.
We believe that there is a bit of exceptional in everyone and that new opportunities and caring individuals can help bring that unique goodness to light. Whether it be intentional parenting, mindful coaching or meaningful education, there are so many avenues in which we can help this next generation flourish and shine.
With that in mind, we found some remarkable kids, families and organizations to encourage and inspire you. The future is bright!
Is it just me or is there something about adorable, smiling babies that make you think, even for a just a moment, that all is right in the world? Here’s my sweet little niece, Ren, to brighten your day!
Whether the “littles” in your life have two legs or four, let’s take this as a reminder to show them a little extra attention. For kiddos, love is spelled T-I-M-E. As the summer winds down and the school schedules start forming, I encourage you to make it a point to spend some uninterrupted, quality time in their world. Dress up? Hide and seek? Building a fort? It’ll bring out the kid in you in the process!
Before you continue on, we’d like to thank the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve for their time, hospitality and VIP experience for our photoshoot with the Delawter family. Readers, we’re excited for you to learn more about this hidden gem. Enjoy the rest of this sunny season. We hope to see you around town!

Frederick Atlantic League Announces Team Name
The Atlantic League Professional Baseball (ALPB) has unveiled the name of the new Frederick franchise that began with no name in the 2023 season. After holding a name-theteam contest in early 2023, the team announced the team's new name: Spire City Ghost Hounds. The name “Spire City” has become synonymous with the City of Frederick, referencing the cluster of spires in the downtown area. The Ghost Hound legend refers to a phantom blue canine with fierce glowing eyes that haunts residents. Fans can pick up the new team gear and support the team all summer long! Family Heritage Trust
Family. Heritage. Trust.
As an elder law attorney and the founder of The Family Heritage Trust Company, Micheal Day is acutely aware of the need for trusts as an estate planning tool. Throughout Michael’s career, he has observed life circumstances among the aging and special needs populations that highlight the importance of trusts. In 2007, in coordination with other local attorneys and CPA’s that saw the same need, The Family Heritage Trust Company was formed.
Michael’s daughter, Breann Day, had a career in social work prior to earning her
Master’s in Business Administration. Mike saw the possibility in that combination and urged his daughter to bring her experience and educational focus to the organization. In 2017, Breann joined the firm and in 2022, she became Chief Operating Officer.
“The Family Heritage Trust Company is tailored to meet the needs of anyone requiring a trust, but more importantly, the aging and special needs populations,” Breann shared. “We’re comfortable managing situations that require advanced planning and instruction, including long-term care, government

assistance and complicated family dynamics. In these situations, we can ensure that assets are appropriately organized and allocated.”
“The Family Heritage Trust Company serves as an objective and qualified third party for administering financial intentions,” explained Ashley Goldsborough, Vice President of Trust Administration. “It’s the intentions of a grantor that determine how and when their services are provided.”
“A trust document can be as vague as saying, ‘provide for the health and welfare of Cassidy,’ or as detailed as saying, ‘will pay for Cassidy’s education at an accredited school as long as she remains drug free.’ We ensure that the trust guidelines, details and specifics are followed to the letter,” Ashley explained. “People will often consider naming a family member as trustee; however, naming us as trustee guarantees proper oversight of the trust and mitigates any family contention from enforcing the stipulations of the trust.”
MULTIPLE ASPECTS OF SERVICE
The Family Heritage Trust Company services trusts that other companies are unwilling to accept. While larger trust companies require upwards of a million-dollar minimum to act as trustee, The Family Heritage Trust Company has no financial threshold to qualify for services.
“We know that a small trust can still have a big impact,” said Breann.
Recently, a small special needs trust was funded by a family grantor to buy the favorite toys and snacks for a special needs beneficiary. These are items that government assistance or the individual’s group home does not supply. Yet, these small luxuries enhance the quality of life for this individual immensely and by leaving it in trust, the grantor can ensure their loved one has these items for their lifetime without jeopardizing their agency benefits.
Another important use for trusts is in the aging community. The establishment of a trust, particularly with elder orphans (aging persons that have
no immediate family to care for them), is growing in popularity. The use of a trust allows the aging person, as both the grantor and the beneficiary, to be confident that their finances are secure and well managed. They can continue to maintain their independence without worries as The Family Heritage Trust Company ensures that all the bills are paid, and their assets are protected from abuse.
The Family Heritage Trust checks in with their clients and trust beneficiaries regularly to ensure their needs are being met. The company is not a social services agency and their primary responsibility is fiduciary; however, they have a high touch service model that is very important to them. They show up, put eyes on their beneficiaries and advocate for them.
SAFE AND SECURE FINANCES
Fiduciary responsibility is a key reason for having The Family Heritage Trust Company manage funds. Being a Fiduciary means they are bound by law to act in their client’s best interest. The Family Heritage Trust Company ensures there is no fiscal abuse or misuse. Having funds in a trust limits the amount of money in a bank account, thereby protecting the beneficiary’s funds from accessibility and fraud.
Having a knowledgeable representative to ensure legal compliance is extremely important since regulations can change every year. The Family Heritage Trust Company ensures that each beneficiary’s funds are appropriately allocated. Before every distribution of funds, their trust committee checks the current laws to ensure nothing could disqualify a trust beneficiary from any services, such as housing or food assistance.
Anne Marie Brandes, Director of Marketing, commented, “Attorneys actually draft the trust documents that we then manage. We assume the task of ensuring the grantor’s intentions are carefully followed. For ease of administration, it’s helpful and appreciated when the grantor starts the conversation about how the trust will work before the trust is enacted.”
FAMILY CARE | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES 22
“The Family Heritage Trust Company is tailored to meet the needs of anyone requiring a trust, but more importantly, the aging and specialneeds populations.”
“All of the trust beneficiaries have varying needs and different levels of independence,” Breann shared. “And the grantors are very appreciative for the peace of mind our service provides.”
“Of course,” she added, “beneficiaries are occasionally unhappy about their accessibility to funds or how the funds are distributed, but that is usually why the funds were put in a trust. A trust ensures the funds are used as intended, while also working to ensure that the trust will last as long as the beneficiary’s needs exist.”
“We provide a lot of oversight and service,” Ashley
shared. “Not only do our lawyers double check everything before funds are distributed, we also cross-train all our staff members. Each of us is engaged in the care of our clients and beneficiaries. There is nearly always someone in the office who can serve the caller.”
When asked how families learn about them, the key leaders rapidly listed various ways: The Arc of Frederick County, STAR Community in Hagerstown, connections with local attorneys with specializations in estate planning, personal injury and divorce and, of course, word of mouth.

“We have a special passion for special needs trusts. We serve a critical purpose for our clients and beneficiaries.”
PROTECTING THE FUTURE
The Family Heritage Trust Company has grown significantly over the last 16 years. While they have offices in Frederick and Hagerstown and focus on those regions, they also serve all of Maryland, Virginia, DC and southern Pennsylvania. As a part of their long-term and succession planning, The Family Heritage Trust Company anticipates self-chartering by the end of 2023.
“All of the Board members are shareholders,” said Breann. “They’re adamant that the firm won’t be sold or become part of a larger agency. The values and mission of The Family Heritage Trust Company are unique. The trust funds won’t go elsewhere.”
As they have grown, The Family Heritage Trust Company has attracted exceptionally experienced staff looking to do more in
the community. Their talents and knowledge have been a perfect match for the growing and changing client needs. The Family Heritage Trust Company provides families with peace of mind and continuity of service. They step up internally and externally to meet the needs of the team and their clients.
“We go that extra mile,” said Anne Marie.
“We love our jobs,” added Ashley.
While responsibly managing traditional investment accounts is a part of our business, The Family Heritage Trust Company focuses on trusts. We have a special passion for special needs trusts. We serve a critical purpose for our clients and beneficiaries,” said Breann. “There’s so much more to us than investing.”

ARTICLE BY SHANNON LIBBY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY EDGEWATER FEDERAL SOLUTIONS
Edgewater Federal Solutions, headquartered in Frederick and founded in 2002, has been at the forefront of fostering educational excellence in the community. Through a groundbreaking STEM initiative, Edgewater has partnered with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to establish STEM Centers in local schools and organizations. This collaboration aims to provide students with hands-on STEM experiences, preparing them for their future careers and contributing to the growth of the community.
In 2022, Edgewater Federal Solutions joined forces with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to set up a hightech STEM center at the Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County. Equipped with cutting-edge technology such as 3D printers, Snap Circuits, OzobotS and Bee Bots, the center offers local children the opportunity to explore the exciting world of scientific learning.
Building upon the success of the previous year, Edgewater and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation expanded their STEM initiative in 2023. On June 6, two STEM Centers were placed in FCPS elementary schools, furthering the mission of providing early exposure to STEM education. The centers, located at Tuscarora Elementary and Whittier Elementary schools, offer hands-on materials for students to engage in experiential learning, fostering their interest and proficiency in STEM fields.
Edgewater’s STEM Initiative has had a profound impact on the community, inspiring students and enhancing educational opportunities. Looking ahead, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and Edgewater seek to partner with local businesses in Frederick to establish more STEM Centers. Will and Meaghan Delawter shared part of their story and how a foundation of faith has kept them together as they grew up in Frederick County and are now raising their family here. During our time together, they opened up about when they first learned their youngest son, Max, was born with Down syndrome and shared how their family is better than ever! Here are excerpts from their inspirational interview.

Meaghan: I was born and raised in Thurmont. I went through the Catoctin feeder system and junior year I met Will.
Will: My mom lived in the Thomas Johnson school district and my dad lived in Catoctin school district...several factors that were impeding some of my progress needed to change...it was the right time to transfer.
Meaghan: I had a mutual friend who played baseball with Will... reached out and asked, “Who is this guy?” He was the new
kid and it was a small school where everyone knows everyone because we all grew up together.
Will: It was only a few weeks of small talk and then I asked her, “Do you want to go out?” It was right before Valentine’s Day…It was February 9th, 2003. We marked that day and we celebrate our relationship anniversary every year. It has been 20 years!
I was there to play baseball and just do my thing...Meaghan truly is the best thing that ever happened to me, the thing that I

never knew I needed. That’s where the foundation was set, and it continued to grow.
One of the clubs we participated in was Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Football Coach Doug Williams led the club. We met early in the morning and would do Bible studies and play games…What better way to build a strong foundation than to have it rooted in faith.
When we graduated from high school, we attended different schools. I was “baseball first” and she was “academic first.” That foundation of faith held us together through those four years of being separated.
Meaghan: That same FCA coach ended up coming to the hospital when Max was born—at the exact moment that we were receiving the news about Max. And that was a gift from God. It was not a coincidence.
Will: That very same coach, Doug Williams…for him to be present at that same exact moment when we were told the craziest news we’ve ever heard…as we were processing fear and asking, “What does this mean?”…for him to be there by my side at that very moment was amazing. He prayed over us and provided a support system…Because he had experienced it, he understood. He helped us work through our raw feelings in that moment.
Meaghan: It’s pretty amazing to tie some of these things together. For example, we met in high school, our FCA coach and advisor ends up years later being a pivotal person for us in that moment…Then one day we’re driving down the road and realized we literally attended the same elementary school...Also, his family owned Avalon Restaurant and my family went there often…we saw each other for most of our lives without realizing it.
Will: She went to law school and I earned my Master’s degree in education...I currently teach in Frederick County and serve as the assistant coach for Catoctin, under the same coach I played for—Mike Franklin, who was so pivotal in my life. It all comes full circle.
Meaghan: It’s neat to see how things are intertwined and how things played out.
Will: Our ability to reflect allows us to see those things that are connected…These things are not all coincidences. It’s Divine intervention.
Meaghan: He proposed to me when I was finishing up law school...We were married about a year and then we moved to Frederick and we’ve lived in Frederick ever since…when we were ready to start a family, we got pregnant super fast and had our first son, Liam. He is a sixth-generation William.
Will: We’ve always had a unique naming tradition. We’re all William Delawter, but the first name is different. My dad is Billy, my grandfather was Bill, and I go by Will...We named our first son Liam, which is Irish for William...And, the middle name is always the father-in-law’s first name.
Meaghan: I wanted two and Will wanted one. He was an only child and loved it. I have a brother and I loved having a sibling…So we had conversations back and forth and ultimately agreed to go for two.
INSPIRED BY | LIFE + CULTURE 32
Will: I said, “If we go man-to-man defense, that’s as far as I can go…once you have more than two, then you go zone.”
Meaghan: Liam was turning five…I remember telling Will, “We’re pregnant!” It was a shock for both of us because we were not trying at the time…We got pregnant with Max and we had extra sonograms and testing because he was a little small...All of the testing and photos looked fine.
Fast forward to Super Bowl weekend, my water broke and Max was four weeks early. I had a C-Section because he was breech. Initially, everything went fine.
Little did we know—we found out afterwards—that one of the nurses thought Max might have Down syndrome and shared her observations with the doctor; but none of the prenatal tests showed anything.

So, they bring him over to us and asked us to give him formula because his blood sugar was low. As Will was feeding him, Max stopped breathing. He literally went completely purple. They took him immediately and started working on him. They got him back, and took him to the NICU.
At this point, we were dumbfounded and didn’t know what was going on.
Once we arrived to the NICU, they told us that Max may have Down syndrome. Then, they told us about the tests they were doing and that he needed to be in the NICU because his lungs were a little weak.
Will: We knew very little about Down syndrome...I didn’t even know the definition. So, to hear that news, your mind goes to some very dark places...You start asking, “What if…?”, and start saying, “He won’t?”. We were assuming a lot because we just didn’t know anything about it.
I think that was the hardest part—everyone just kept talking to us and we couldn’t process the “DS” word that was dropped on us..I’m still thinking about my kid being purple in my arms; then, within 30 minutes, we are told he has Down syndrome.
We asked the nurse to close the door and give us a moment... That’s when we both lost it. That was raw emotion. I would say it was an all time low, which eventually turned into an all time high
once we got to hold Max and do all the things that we wanted to originally do with him when he was born.
Meaghan: We had multiple things going on. There was a diagnosis that they hadn’t confirmed, no one could visit him because of flu season, the room was empty because Max was in the NICU and he had stopped breathing. So we’re processing all of these things, thinking he died and now he’s alive and now we’re being told this news. It went dark real quick.
Then a nurse said to us, “You just raise him like you raise Liam.” And, it was one of those moments when we thought, “Yes, that’s right!” There are going to be differences, but you don’t do anything different.
His diagnosis of Down syndrome wasn’t even our scariest moment. On the day we were released to take Max home, we received a call to come back to the hospital because the bloodwork indicated Leukemia and we needed to transfer him to Johns Hopkins immediately to conduct specialized testing.
Will: Behind the scenes, I was sick and at home. I had a moment when I was questioning God and asking, “Why?” I was angry and beating my fists on the ground and I was on my knees. I had hit rock bottom in my mind. I just kept screaming, “Why?”...I reached a point when all of the adrenaline poured out of me and I felt weak. Then I heard a whisper that said, “Why not you? Why not you?”
CONTINUED > 35 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FREDERICK AUGUST 2023
And, I sat there and thought, “God would never give you anything you can’t handle.”...And, I realized that we were going to be alright. At that point, everything changed and I had peace because I was confident everything was going to be fine.
Meaghan: At that time I was in the hospital and a song was playing: Confidence by Sanctus Real. One of the first lyrics in that song is about feeling unqualified...that was something that I felt because I thought, “I’m unqualified for this. I have no clue how to handle this.”
But at that moment, that song was telling me that I know exactly what Jesus is preparing me for and that I am qualified to do it.
The good news is that Max does not have Leukemia!... Max is very healthy. He does not have a hole in his heart. He does not have hearing and vision issues. He’s just little.
Will: We raise Max like we do Liam...He’s the light of our life. He has brought so much joy to so many people. He lives life like we should…unbiased, unaware of differences. He just smiles and fist bumps! That’s the way we should all see the world.
It’s truly been the greatest blessing ever to have our two
sons and see how unique they are in their own ways and be able to raise them up together...We want more people to see and understand and learn about inclusiveness for children...He has some special needs, but this title doesn’t have to limit him. He is still a fun kid!
Meaghan: Max has changed us. We are better parents to both of our children. We don’t take things for granted. We appreciate and value everything that Liam can do and the things that Max can do. Now, we celebrate all the things for both of our sons.
Liam sees no difference in Max. He just sees Max as his brother and honors him for who he is. He wrestles with him, plays with him and teaches him things. He’s a great big brother. Max adores Liam.
Will: I love seeing them sit side-by-side on the battery-powered John Deere tractor and drive around the yard. Liam loves to drive Max around the yard. That’s the way it’s meant to be…big brother taking care of little brother...I’m proud to have two healthy kids that will grow up with strong morals and values and just be good people and have a positive impact on this world. BROOKELYNN PEDDICORD SHOWS HOW RESILIENCE AND HARD WORK PAY OFF
In 2019, Brookelynn Peddicord and her mom, Jennifer Peddicord, were walking through a local shopping center in their hometown of Brunswick. As they looked through the storefront windows, Brookelynn saw students training at da SilvaSimmons Karate and she told her mom, “I want to do that!”
Jennifer explained, “I reached out to Master Tim Simmons and discussed Brookelynn’s background. He said to bring her in and they would see how it goes...He said he couldn’t promise anything but would take her as far as he can…Master Tim has been absolutely amazing. He holds Brookelynn to high standards and has gone the extra mile to make sure she is on par with her peers.”
“She fell in love with it right away,” Jennifer continued. “She wanted to come back every single day. We quickly found what she enjoys. We’ve been coming ever since.”
Brookelynn added, “I like to learn new [karate] forms and make new friends. I like to practice my forms. I like to promote and pass the tests.”
“She doesn’t know her own strength. She doesn’t give up. If she fails, she gets back up and keeps trying until she can do it.”

“Karate is the most fun experience. Even if it’s hard, you just have to keep trying!” — Brookelynn Peddicord
This year, Brookelynn was invited to be a member of the da Silva-Simmons Karate national competition team and traveled with her 44 teammates to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to compete at the 2023 AAU Taekwondo National Championships. Brookelynn competed in four Para Taekwondo divisions during the Fourth of July holiday week. On the first day of competition, she earned a gold medal in sparring. On the third day of competition, she earned a gold medal for her Chong Gi form in the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) division, a gold medal for her Tae Gyuk EE Jang form in the World Taekwondo division and a gold medal for her Pyong Ahn 2 form in the Tang Soo Do division. Brookelynn’s individual accomplishments contributed to the da Silva-Simmons team earning high national rankings in both forms and sparring.
As a rising seventh grader at Brunswick Middle School, Brookelynn navigates school life with a combination of epilepsy, autism, ADHD, hypertonia and Tourette syndrome. Her mom says she does fairly well in school with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that provides support and accommodations for her to be successful. This summer, Brookelynn is participating in the Elevate Program at Brunswick High School where she works 1-on-1 with a tutor to work on math skills.
In addition to karate, Brookelynn loves to watch movies with her mom and grandma, go swimming and “talk” with her friends on her iPad. Brookelynn dreams of being a Veterinarian. Her favorite animal is a pug. She loves taking care of her pug, Henry.
Jennifer says she is inspired by her daughter every day. “She doesn’t know her own strength. She doesn’t give up. If she fails, she gets back up and keeps trying until she can do it.”
When asked what she would like people to know, Brookelynn replied, “Karate is the most fun experience. Even if it’s hard, you just have to keep trying!” DSKTangSooDo.com

CATOCTIN WILDLIFE PRESERVE
So, Mr. Hahn became the owner of the two-acre snake farm in 1966.
At that point, the Hahn family began living in the cabin on the property (which is still here and is currently inhabited by a zookeeper). They began adding different types of animals and land. From 1966 through today, we have grown from two acres to about 100 acres and have added hundreds of species. We currently house around 1200 animals.
Those are our roots. We’re still family-run. We all have our boots on the ground every day.
A HIDDEN GEM IN FREDERICK COUNTY
We spent some time with Laurie Hahn, General Curator and Director of Animal Welfare, at Catoctin Wildlife Preserve, and discovered an exciting world of animals from around the globe, right here in Frederick County.
HOW DID CATOCTIN WILDLIFE PRESERVE BEGIN?
The original two-acre property was a snake farm that began in 1933 by Gordon Gaver. For many years he operated it as a roadside attraction featuring different types of snakes and reptiles. In the early 1960s, Mr. Hahn was a college professor who had a passion for animals, especially reptiles. When he found this place, he wanted to be a part of it.
After a few years, Gaver became ill and passed away. His wife didn’t want to continue the caretaking of the two-acre snake farm, but Mr. Hahn did!
Mr. Hahn and another gentleman went in together to purchase the park. The other gentleman only lasted a year and then bowed out.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST INTERESTING AND UNIQUE EXHIBITS?
One of our star zoo ambassadors is Magia, a black jaguar. It’s rare for a jaguar to be black. Mostly, jaguars are yellow with black spots and some with white on them. Magia is all black with black spots. It’s really hard to see the spots, unless he is sitting in the sun, because of the slight variation of the black color. He’s really beautiful.
Magia is an impressive jaguar. He’s almost 200 pounds, so he’s quite a big boy, even for a jaguar. He’s very interactive with people. He was born in captivity and came to us from another zoological facility. He had always been around people. He’s very playful and gorgeous, so he would probably be our star.
I think one of the things people do not realize is that most of the animals in zoos have grown up in captivity and have a bond with people. They love to sit and watch us through the window just as much as we love to sit and watch them.
For the unique, we have the fossa (pronounced FOW-suh or FOO-suh). When people hear the word “fossa” and read the sign, many say, “What

in the world? How have I not heard about this super cool animal?”
Fossas are the apex predator from Madagascar. They are their own unique species because they evolved on an island and they had nowhere else to go or outside influence. They became extremely unique and specialized for living on that island.
I lovingly call them “monkey-dog-cat-ferrets” because they are so uniquely put together. They have the nose of a dog, the face of a cat, the body of a ferret and the tail of a monkey. They can actually run through the trees just as fast as lemurs. Lemurs are their favorite food in the wild, so they have to be fast to catch a good meal.
We have produced two litters here at the preserve; one in 2014 and one in 2017. We are one of about five [zoological facilities] in the country that has successfully produced fossas. So, we’re happy we are contributing to their species here in captivity in order to spread the news about their plight in the wild. Madagascar is being deforested very quickly.
We also support Rainforest Trust, a non-profit organization based in Virginia. They own hundreds of acres in Madagascar in order to protect lemurs and fossas.

WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT CATOCTIN WILDLIFE PRESERVE?
First of all, we’re bigger than you think! The number one comment we get from visitors is, “I had no idea that this place was so big, so nice and had so many animals from all over the world—unique animals that I have never seen before.” Most people are just blown away once they visit.
Secondly, we are not a roadside attraction anymore. We are a zoological facility, answering to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), our accrediting board and The Zoological Association of America. In other words, we’re all grown up now. We deal with zoos across the country–breeding, trading animals, sharing information and more. We have conversations and interactions with very large zoos, like the San Diego Zoo.
WHAT ARE SOME POPULAR ATTRACTIONS AT THE PARK?
Every day at the park, we have “Keeper Talks.” One of them is with Magia, our black jaguar. We provide an opportunity to talk to the keeper and see Magia being extremely active and enjoying his enrichment, which we change up every day (a
ball, a barrel, a scent, catnip, cinnamon, coffee, etc.) This is exciting to experience and a great opportunity for photos.
We also have a yellow-headed vulture that is glove-trained so that we can bring him out and guests can get a closer look at him. They can get some great photos and learn about the smallest vulture from South America.
We also offer an alligator encounter, where guests get to meet and pet a baby alligator. They can grab a photo, talk to the keeper and ask questions about the big alligators in the alligator bayou.
In addition, we also have parakeet feedings. Guests can stand in the middle of a flying rainbow of 700 parakeets, which is pretty amazing.
We have tortoise feedings with our African spurred tortoises, commonly called sulcata tortoises. Our biggest is about 125 pounds. You can grab some lettuce from our outpost shop and hand-feed them.
We have two petting zoos: the Nigerian dwarf goat petting zoo located in our African section of the park and the International Petting Zoo with animals from Arabia, South America, Europe and Asia. You can hand-feed and pet them.
And, of course, our 20-acre safari, with about 100 animals, including: bison, camels, watusi cattle, zebras, ostriches and eland antelope. There are a few feeding stops along the way as you venture into the animal paddocks and interact with those big animals from the safety of an army truck.
HOW IS THE PARK ORGANIZED?
It is arranged geographically. The Madagascar section features the lemurs and fossa. The Australian section features the emus, dingos and large kangaroos. The African section features the safari, lions and green vervet monkeys, Nigerian dwarf goats and the bongo antelope. The South American section features the jaguar, spider monkeys, iguanas and chachalacas (a rare breed of bird).
It’s set up geographically in order to educate people and introduce them to different parts of the world. In our exhibits, we try to create a feel that’s natural but that also speaks to that part of the world.
And, we still house venomous reptiles. That has been a lifetime passion of Mr. Hahn. As a matter of fact, he founded the International Herpetological Society with Hood College in 1971.
We have venomous animals from around the world, including some species that are rarely seen. The Mangshan viper is absolutely beautiful; so beautiful that you don’t think they are real.
We also feature Australian reptiles and giant reptiles. We have an 18-foot, reticulated python that weighs close to 200 pounds, named Bertha.
We are very glad to be here so that children can get up, close and personal with the animals.
46
WHY ARE YOU A PRESERVE AND NOT A ZOO?
We are a preserve. We preserve the land and the animals that were here when we got here. This area is not being developed. We’re not a concrete zoo. We have dirt and gravel paths, we leave the trees and natural waterways and are doing our best to exhibit animals that naturally exist here. We are also preserving the nature that is here. And, we are also preserving endangered species from around the world and doing our best to share those with people. We aid in conservation efforts with other zoological facilities and donate to non-profit causes that are working around the world to preserve them. That’s the cornucopia of why we are a preserve and not a zoo.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR CWP?
I’m excited about bigger and better exhibits. We are constantly constructing new exhibits, not just for new animals, but for animals that are here and need more space. For example, we have lions here that are about a year old and about 150 pounds. They will be about 400 pounds in two years, so they will need more space. That exhibit is planned and I’m excited about it.
I’m excited about the drive-thru safari, where people will be able to drive their own vehicles through the safari and interact with the animals. That will be a really cool feature that will be added to the park. It’s under construction and we hope it will open in the near future.
I look forward to attracting and educating more of the people in the Frederick community. We have a lot to offer. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve is a diverse, complex, educational park with beautiful animals and scenery. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve is a hidden gem that we want people to know about! Float Your Worries Away
Light Side Floats Offers Ultimate Relaxation with Floatation Therapy
ARTICLE BY EMILY DICKEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIE ROSE PHOTOGRAPHY
Eighty pounds of salt dissolved into 200 gallons of water isn’t just the secret formula for Eleven to tap into her telekinetic powers in Stranger Things—it may also be the secret formula for the ultimate relaxation.
“I call it the Magic Eraser,” said Tom Palermo of Light Side Floats, which has been located on Gas House Pike for the past seven years. “We don’t realize how much we put on ourselves in our daily lives. It’s important to take the burdens off regularly.”
With its ocean-color paint and quiet atmosphere, customers soon realize a visit to Light Side Floats is a
step away from reality. “This involves your mind and body working together in an effort to take away the clutter while you are here. We help people clean up the ‘mess’ and chaos left by hectic, everyday lives and stress,” Palermo said.
The optimum relaxation session, according to Palermo, is a 30-minute hydro massage, followed by a 30-minute stop in their infrared sauna, and ending with a 60-minute float. Afterward, customers relax in the “whisper room” - a quiet room where visitors can journal, read, use foam rollers, meditate, drink tea or

just enjoy silence. This final stop serves as a transition between the tour of relaxation activities and stepping back into the real world.
“I want people to leave feeling euphoric, awake and excited. Many of us live our lives on autopilot. Taking the time to care for ourselves and fully relax helps us regroup and recharge.”
A former police officer, Palermo left the Virginia Beach Police Force in 2009. He was looking for a way to work closer to home and family while still helping others and contemplated, “what’s next?”
Excruciating back pain that would not subside took him to a physical therapist who asked Palermo if he had ever suffered an ankle injury. His answer was “yes”—a badly sprained ankle during his senior year of high school. “The PT attributed my back pain to the way I have unconsciously compensated for that ankle injury over the years.”
In an effort to ease his back pain, Palermo tried flotation therapy. “I personally don’t want to take medication or pain killers. I would rather use the natural route. That first float put me on the road to recovery.” Before he knew it, Palermo found himself investigating his own path to opening a floatation therapy facility.
Instead of the “pod-type” he had tried, Palermo decided on “cabin-style” floatation suites for his business. “Pods often have a claustrophobic feel. Our cabin-style
units allow for lots of open air when guests are floating in their private rooms.”
Privacy and peace are two of the foundations of Palermo’s place. “Once we get you started on your relaxation visit, we leave you alone.” Light Side Floats is a family-run business with Palermo’s wife, daughter and son often helping.
“I started my career [in law enforcement] to help people, now I am still able to help people but in a different way.”
SERVICES & BENEFITS
Hydromassage Bed
Similar to a warm 103-degree waterbed with jets, it prepares for relaxation, increases circulation and loosens tension.
Infrared Sauna
Operating between 110 to 130 degrees, it aids in relaxation, encourages pain relief and soothes sore muscles.
Floatation
The Cabin-Style units house 9-10 inches of water with a specific gravity of 1.24-1.29 due to salt content. Customers float easily allowing complete relaxation while there, but also better sleep, decreased stress and alleviation of pain. Palermo adds, “It won’t cure the cause, but floatation really does help to rid your body of pain.”

The Heart & Soul of ST. JOHN’S REGIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL
A Quality Education Rooted in Academic Success and Character Development

For over 194 years, Catholic education has been provided in Frederick County under the name St. John. Originally founded in 1829, the school was given a regional designation by the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1991, renamed St. John Regional Catholic School (SJRCS) and serves eight local and growing parishes. In 2005, SJRCS opened a new 27-acre campus near Fort Detrick to provide modern classrooms and technology for students in grades Pre-K 3 through eighth grade.
A two-time recipient of the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award by the United States Department of Education, SJRCS works to “Inspire One Child at A Time” by fostering future leaders through academic excellence, Christian virtues and hearts seeking to serve.
“There is a deep beauty in our school community; we often see former students enroll their children and grandchildren. However, just like our beloved county, we’ve seen tremendous growth with new families becoming valued members of our community,” stated new Principal, Mrs. Kim Hanner.
“As a school community, we’re focused on each student, ensuring they receive a quality education rooted in both academic success and character development,” shared Dr. Annette Jones, out-going principal. Under the leadership of Dr. Jones and Mr. Randy Lapcevich, SJRCS launched a new leadership program entitled ‘The Heart of Leadership’ which builds on Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids and 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens with Virtues in Practice, developed by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia in a program studied at every grade level for three rolling years. Melding virtues and leadership remains a focus for SJRCS, and the program is infused into the religious curriculum.
Classes are purposely kept small. “We seek to keep our classrooms to twenty-three students, with occasional exceptions,” said Dr. Annette Jones. “Studies have shown that smaller classroom sizes provide students with more individualized attention, an emphasis on academic excellence, better classroom management and increased student participation.”

SJRCS continues to celebrate ethnic diversity within its student family community, reaching 40% during the 2022-2023 school year. Students also represent diverse religious affiliations including Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Islamic faiths from Frederick County, West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
“As a school community, we are welcoming and inclusive while still maintaining our Catholic identity,” stated Principal Hanner.
Students, also known as Wildcats, become confident critical thinkers through their involvement in problem-solving STEM projects. Every student has access to technology throughout theschool day, and each classroom is equipped with an interactive
BEN-Q touchscreen, which allow teachers to build internet-enabled lessons. “Our students are encouraged to work collaboratively and our technology allows them to do so in every subject throughout their school day,” stated Mrs. Hanner.
Dr. Jones explained, “While we prepare our students for the future, what sets our school apart is the beautiful community.”
Mrs. Hanner echoed the same, stating “our parents are critical to the school’s success; they’re active participants in their children’s education, our service projects and fun social events.”
The Home and School Association (HSA) provides opportunities for community-building events throughout the year. “It has

been a joy to work with the HSA this past year. As the school continues to grow, the HSA has done an exceptional job providing opportunities for families to feel like members of a close knit community,” emphasized Assistant Principal Christina Dabulskis. “The HSA has worked long hours to put on events such as Breakfast with Santa, which served over 400 members, the Father-Daughter Dance and the Mother-Son Bowling Night. They put together the best events!”
Wildcat parents also creatively support student service projects. “Our Catholic School Week Committee organized a cereal box donation drive that provided the Frederick Food Bank with over 2,000 boxes! Parents organized an epic cereal box dominoes game throughout the entire school building so that all of our community could celebrate in the joy of their service to others,” shared Assistant Principal Kelly Weeks.
Together, Dr. Jones, and then Assistant-Principal Mrs. Hanner, worked to open the largest private school in Frederick County during the pandemic. “We had already been using Google Classroom when Covid precautions mandated school closings,” Mrs. Hanner explained. “Since technology was already integrated within the classrooms, we just had to initiate Zoom. The students were ready because they were experienced with a technologyintegrated curriculum.”
Dr. Jones and Mrs. Hanner’s management of faceto-face learning within Covid mandates, word of mouth and a reputation of excellence has brought growth to SJRCS. From 2020 to 2023, end of year enrollment grew from 420 to 633. “Our school grew to a three-track school, meaning that each grade from Pre-K 4 through 8th grade has three homerooms,” stated Dr. Jones. Niche.com recently ranked St. John’s Regional Catholic School as one of best private schools in the United States.
“We greatly appreciate the leadership and insight of our teachers, staff, school board and parish priests, as well,” said Jones. “With their guidance and leadership, SJRCS is strong and looks confidently to the future.” While Dr. Jones is leaving the role of principal in the capable hands of her former Assistant Principal, Kim Hanner, she will still be part of the larger school community as she serves as the new Associate Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
In June, the community celebrated the commencement of its 184th graduating class. “As I watched my daughter receive her diploma, I could not be more grateful to SJRCS for their role in the formation of her faith, character development and academic achievement,” stated Andrew Schumacher.
The graduates of the class of 2023 and the entire St. John Regional Catholic School community are prepared and look with joy to the future. SJRCS.org
