It’s a common misconception that only the wealthy or those in high-risk professions need asset protection. But the truth is, anyone can be sued — a car accident, foreclosure, an injured tenant, unpaid medical bills — and the financial fallout could crush your finances. Don’t wait for trouble to strike. Plan now.
Asset protection planning uses legal structures and strategies to safeguard your assets (accounts and property) from lawsuits and creditors. The key? You must act before a legal issue arises. Waiting until you're already in trouble could lead to penalties or accusations of fraud. So, now is the time to consider implementing one or more of the following tips to protect your hard-earned money and property from creditors, predators, and lawsuits.
✓ Load Up on Liability Insurance
Your first and most affordable line of defense.
Homeowner’s, auto, business, professional, malpractice, long-term care insurance and umbrella policies can help cover lawsuit costs and legal fees. Review your policy limits regularly and talk with your insurance agent about umbrella coverage as these types of policies are relatively inexpensive compared with more advanced asset protection strategies.
✓ Max Out Your 401(k) or IRA
Protected by federal law in bankruptcy (with certain limitations).
These accounts not only grow your retirement savings but can keep your money safe from creditors, predators, and lawsuits. Don’t miss the chance to secure your future and your finances.
✓ Use an LLC for Investment or Rental Properties
Owning real estate outside an LLC leaves your personal assets exposed.
An LLC provides a legal barrier between your business and your personal wealth — a smart move for landlords, flippers, and real estate investors.

In an era where healthcare often feels rushed and impersonal, one Franklin-based company is bringing back the house call, with a luxurious, deeply personal twist. At the helm of this movement is Emily Manning, PA-C, owner of homeRN Franklin, a concierge caregiving service that’s redefining home care across Williamson County.
“I’ve always loved being a Physician Assistant, but what really fulfills me is the relationship side of medicine,” Manning says, her voice equal parts conviction and compassion. “homeRN was born out of a desire to bridge clinical excellence with deeply personal caregiving—and bring that directly into people’s homes.”
As both a practicing Physician Assistant and business owner, Manning infuses every aspect of homeRN Franklin with her clinical expertise. Her background in urology and breast cancer care opened her eyes to a growing need: not just for competent home caregivers, but for ones who truly understand complex medical issues and the emotional toll they can take on families.
“My training helps me serve not only as a provider, but as an advocate and liaison,” she explains. “Families often feel overwhelmed navigating medical care. We’re here to take that pressure off and ensure nothing gets lost in translation.”
Unlike traditional home care services, homeRN Franklin offers a concierge caregiving model, a term that might be new to some, but one that’s rapidly gaining traction among families who want more than routine care. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,”
Manning says. “We build real relationships with our clients. When they call, they don’t get a call center, they speak directly with someone who knows them personally.”
That level of connection is what differentiates homeRN Franklin. Each client is thoughtfully matched with a caregiver based on needs, personality, and preferences. And while homeRN Franklin certainly covers daily essentials like personal hygiene, light housekeeping, and meal prep, their team is also trained to provide specialized medical support. From catheter and wound care to post-surgical recovery and in-home IV therapy, the company merges the convenience of home care with the confidence of clinical oversight.
“We’re one of the few providers in Williamson County offering a unique blend of medically focused caregiving and skilled nursing as part of our comprehensive home care services,” Manning says. “Clients can receive everything from medication administration to urgent care visits all without leaving their house.”
That flexibility and depth of care come as a relief to many families facing a patchwork of appointments, transportation challenges, and emotional strain. Manning’s team doesn’t just fill gaps, they offer peace of mind.
“Our Registered Nurse, Bailey, is a shining example of what we look for,” Manning shares. “She came to us with extensive experience in oncology and immediately connected with our clients. Her warmth, attention to detail, and medical knowledge make her an incredible asset.”
Hiring the right people is central to homeRN Franklin’s mission. “We only bring on caregivers we’d trust in our own loved one’s home,” she emphasizes. “Compassion and integrity are non-negotiable.”
But homeRN Franklin’s impact isn’t only measured in professional standards, it’s in the quiet reassurance they provide at 2 a.m. when a client isn’t feeling well. It’s in consistent communication with family members who live out of state. And it’s in the dignity they help preserve during life’s most vulnerable chapters.
“We offer 24/7 access to myself or our RN,” Manning says. “Not just in theory, but in practice. If there’s a medical concern, we’re there day or night. That kind of access is rare, and it matters.”

“My training helps me serve not only as a provider, but as an advocate and liaison. Families often feel overwhelmed navigating medical care. We’re here to take that pressure off and ensure nothing gets lost in translation.”
For families weighing their options, Manning’s advice is simple: do your homework, and don’t settle. “There are wonderful care providers out there,” she says. “But look for the one that truly aligns with your values and needs. If your loved one has medical complexities, make sure the team you choose is equipped to handle them.”
And for those wondering whether homeRN Franklin is the right fit, Manning extends a personal invitation. “Call me. Let’s talk. Even if you just need guidance or don’t know where to start, I’m happy to meet for coffee and listen,” she says. “Our goal isn’t to sell you a service, it’s to help you find the right solution.”
From the first phone call to the final recovery milestone, homeRN Franklin’s commitment is unwavering. “When a family lets us into their home, they’re placing a huge amount of trust in us,” Manning says. “That’s sacred. And we honor that trust every single day.”
In a community known for its warmth, charm, and strong family ties, homeRN Franklin is providing something equally vital: professional care delivered with a neighbor’s heart. And for the families of Williamson County, that’s a house call worth answering.

Nashville has no shortage of iconic venues, but The Pinnacle is raising the bar for live entertainment in Music City. Located in the heart of downtown, with its striking architecture, skyline views, and a lineup that spans genres and generations, The Pinnacle isn’t just any old venue. From chart-topping artists to up-and-coming acts, this is another feather in the city's musical cap. Franklin Lifestyle talked with Anne Hack, VP of Operations and Mike Ducharme, Regional VP both for AEG River Cities to get your top questions answered.
WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF THE PINNACLE, AND HOW DOES IT STAND OUT FROM OTHER VENUES IN NASHVILLE?
The Pinnacle was conceived as a state-of-the-art music venue to complement Nashville's rich musical heritage. Situated within the $1 billion Nashville Yards development, it aims to offer a versatile space for various events, from concerts to corporate gatherings. Operated by AEG Presents, the venue is designed to provide an intimate yet grand experience, featuring a 4,500-seat capacity and advanced production capabilities.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE VISION BEHIND THE DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE VENUE?
We see The Pinnacle being a complementary piece of the music landscape. A venue to showcase programming that resonates within the city's rich musical history and is simultaneously a home for all genres of music. Our aim is to become an artist and fan favorite and part of the fabric of the Music City scene.
The architectural design of The Pinnacle blends modern aesthetics with Nashville's cultural essence. The venue's exterior features a grand staircase leading to a mirrored "The Pinnacle" sign, which changes colors depending on the performer. Inside, the space is adorned with murals and installations from over 30 local artists, curated by Emily Cox and Jenn Ward, ensuring the venue resonates with the community's artistic spirit.
WHAT KIND OF ARTISTS OR GENRES CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE REGULARLY AT THE PINNACLE?
The Pinnacle is designed to attract touring acts across a broad spectrum of genres. The venue's versatile design allows for various event formats, including general admission, seated shows, and comedy performances.
HOW WILL THE PINNACLE CONTRIBUTE TO NASHVILLE’S ALREADY RICH LIVE MUSIC SCENE?
By offering a venue with arena-scale production capabilities and a focus on artist, industry, and fan experience, The Pinnacle aims to enhance Nashville's live music offerings. Its central location within Nashville Yards, surrounded by hotels, restaurants, and green spaces, positions it as a hub for both locals and visitors seeking diverse entertainment options. We want to be a
complementary piece of the music and special events landscape in Nashville.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN BRINGING THE PINNACLE TO LIFE, AND HOW DID THE TEAM OVERCOME IT?
One of the significant challenges was integrating the venue into the existing Nashville Yards development while maintaining its unique identity. The design team focused on incorporating local art and materials to
“ITS CENTRAL LOCATION WITHIN NASHVILLE YARDS, SURROUNDED BY HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, AND GREEN SPACES, POSITIONS IT AS A HUB FOR BOTH LOCALS AND VISITORS SEEKING DIVERSE ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS.”
ensure the venue felt connected to the community. Additionally, the team worked on creating a flexible space that could accommodate various event types, from concerts to corporate functions.
HOW IS AEG WORKING WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND BUSINESSES AROUND THE VENUE?
AEG has partnered with local artists to curate the venue's interior art installations, curated by Emily Cox and Jenn Ward, ensuring that the community's creative talents are showcased. The venue also highlights local breweries and distilleries to offer authentic Nashville experiences to attendees. By integrating local elements into the venue's operations, AEG aims to foster a strong connection with the surrounding community.
CAN YOU SHARE ANY EXCLUSIVE DETAILS ABOUT UPCOMING OPENING ACTS OR EVENTS?
We will continue to have all genres represented to touch all music fans.
WHERE DO YOU SEE THE PINNACLE’S ROLE IN THE FUTURE OF LIVE ENTERTAINMENT IN NASHVILLE AND BEYOND?
The Pinnacle is poised to become a central figure in Nashville's live entertainment landscape. With its state-of-the-art facilities
and diverse programming, it aims to attract a wide array of artists and audiences. AEG's track record with venues like L.A. LIVE and The O2 in London suggests that The Pinnacle could serve as a model for future entertainment districts, blending live music with community engage ment and urban development. I believe concert tourism to be an exciting part of the music hub that is Nashville, and that feels like it's only going to grow. And of course, our audiences will also be patrons of surrounding downtown businesses. First off, there are so many great venues in Nashville, and we hope to be thought of in the same breath as them. We want this to feel like home to everyone in Nashville and beyond, a home that comes with the appeal that a bespoke, purpose-built music venue can offer. That's going to lead to people traveling here to see their favorite act, in a great venue, in a wonderful city where they want to spend the weekend.

Stoltz Co. Designs Event Spaces with Beauty and Function
ARTICLE BY WILL STOLTZFUS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
In Tennessee, where barns dot the countryside, building a place to celebrate is about more than putting up four walls and a roof. For Will Stoltz, it’s about honoring tradition while shaping spaces that serve the needs of today.
Stoltz and his brother Mahlon are the founders of Stoltz Co., a design and build company known for creating custom event venues across Middle Tennessee. With roots in Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s Amish community, where barn building was as common as cornfields, Stoltz brings generations of craftsmanship to every project.
“I grew up in the Amish community,” Stoltz said. “My father was a farmer who started building barns when I was very young. Construction work was a natural part of my childhood. We were taught hard work, honesty and integrity. Those values still guide Stoltz Co. today.”
One of the company’s specialties is custom builds for weddings, parties and community events, often using timber framing and mortise and tenon joinery. These methods aren’t just aesthetic choices. They’re built to last.
One recent project highlighted these principles. Using mortise and tenon construction, Stoltz and his team created a venue that is both sturdy and visually
striking. “This style has been used for hundreds of years. It’s strong, and the exposed beams give the interior a lot of character,” he said.
Designing event spaces requires a balance of beauty and function. Stoltz said most clients want large, open spaces with high ceilings and exposed wood framing. “We help guide the design, but ultimately, the structure itself naturally lends to openness and flexibility,” he said.
Event venues often serve more than one purpose. Some are built in a client’s backyard to host both private and public events. Others are constructed for businesses that need a dedicated place for internal gatherings. “Instead of renting space over and over, some companies just build their own,” Stoltz said. “It can be used for anything from a Christmas party to a corporate retreat.”
Certain features have become especially popular in recent builds: lofted second floors, spiral staircases, and decorative concrete floors are in high demand. Most clients prefer exposed timber framing, often requesting designs that reference traditional barns.
In Middle Tennessee, barns are more than just nostalgic architecture. They’re central to the visual and cultural identity of the region. Many clients want their event space to reflect that heritage, even if it’s a brand-new structure.
“Some people want us to build a new barn and then let the wood age for a year before staining it, just so it has that older look,” Stoltz said. “Barn-style venues are definitely the most common request.”
“Bring us your vision. If you don’t know exactly what you want, we’ll show you examples and ask what stands out.”
Another style gaining popularity is the chapel-pavilion hybrid. These structures blend the open, airy qualities of a barn with the traditional form of a chapel.
Stoltz recalled a client who added one of these pavilions to her wedding venue, resulting in a notable business boost. “She wanted more outdoor options for her clients, and after we built the pavilion, her bookings went up 80 percent,” he said.
Durability and safety are just as important as visual appeal. Stoltz said timber frame construction is one of the strongest ways to build a wooden structure. His team also offers optional FEMA-rated storm shelters, which can be integrated into both residential and commercial projects.
While some clients want Stoltz Co. to handle the entire construction from start to finish, others choose a more flexible approach. “We can build just the shell, and the client can finish it over time,” Stoltz said. “It works well for those with budget constraints who want to phase out the process.”
When it comes to starting a custom build, Stoltz says it begins with a conversation. “Bring us your vision. If you don’t know exactly what you want, we’ll show you examples and ask what stands out. From there, we can build something that reflects your style and needs.”
Though each project is unique, Stoltz’s work is rooted in consistency: solid craftsmanship, a respect for the land, and a desire to create spaces that bring people together. In a region where hospitality and heritage go hand in hand, the event venues Stoltz builds do more than host gatherings, they become part of the story.

HOW ONE POP-UP EXPERIENCE IS BRINGING STYLE TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Got a romantic date coming up? A birthday brunch or girls’ gathering on the horizon? Looking for a way to make those moments extra special? Picnic PopUp is your answer. They are turning those special moments into unforgettable memories with thoughtfully curated themes, cozy setups, and gourmet touches. All you have to do is show up and enjoy. Franklin Lifestyle got to speak with Jam Stewart, the founder and creative force behind these luxury picnics.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START PICNIC POPUP, AND HOW DID YOUR PERSONAL BACKGROUND INFLUENCE THE CONCEPT?
The story of Picnic PopUp began in early 2020, when we developed the concept and business plan. I was craving a creative outlet from the hustle of my corporate day-to-day. I’ve always loved hosting and curating thoughtful gatherings—and there’s something incredibly special about the intimacy of a picnic. It invites you to slow down. Being rooted together, surrounded by nature, creates a sort of magic that’s both grounding and joyful.
I was full of inspiration and excited to launch— but then the pandemic hit, and like everyone else, I had to pause and adjust.
By early summer, though, we realized the pandemic actually opened a unique opportunity. People were craving connection, but still needed to be safe. With traditional venues shut down, outdoor gatherings became the answer. We quickly pivoted, dusted off the business plan and launched!
A luxury outdoor picnic offered the perfect blend of safety, style, and togetherness. And while socially distanced get-togethers were the original draw, what really continues to resonate is the deeply personal and bespoke experience.

WERE YOU ALWAYS INTERESTED IN EVENT PLANNING AND HOSPITALITY, OR DID THIS CAREER PATH COME AS A SURPRISE?
Absolutely! I’ve been planning events since I was six-years-old—literally. I helped organize the arrival of my baby sister and never looked back. Hosting gives me energy. Throughout my career, events have always been part of my world in one way or another, and with Picnic PopUp, I get to fully stretch my creativity in ways that feel both natural and exciting.
WHAT DOES A “PERFECT PICNIC” LOOK LIKE TO YOU, PERSONALLY?
For me, it’s all about joy. The perfect picnic is when I look around and see people truly present—no phones, just genuine conversation, laughter, and connection. That’s the magic.
HOW DOES PICNIC POPUP WORK, FROM BOOKING TO SETUP, AND WHAT CAN CLIENTS EXPECT ON THE DAY OF THEIR EVENT?
It’s easy to book. Our website and Instagram are great starting points. While we offer a few styled “themes” to spark ideas, every picnic is truly custom. We curate each detail to reflect the personality of the host and the vibe of the occasion. No detail is overlooked—we’ve even got the stain remover and bottle opener covered.
Our standard setup includes a two-hour experience for up to four guests, but we’ve hosted events for as many as 50. Most of our gatherings tend to average six to 10 guests.
Each picnic includes a fully styled tablescape with place settings, rugs, plush pillows, fresh flowers, and themed décor. We handle everything—setup, cleanup, and everything in between. Guests simply arrive and enjoy.
We also offer Slumber PopUps—a dreamy take on our signature style. We’ve taken elements from our picnic experiences, sprinkled in a few stars, added a little fairy dust, and turned it into a magical, memorable sleepover. This nighttime PJ party is perfect for any age, but most popular with seven to 14-year-olds. We bring the setup to your home.
We offer a variety of luxe add-ons, and we carefully vet each partner we work with to ensure quality and consistency. Most of our collaborators are local, women-owned businesses based in Williamson County. Supporting our creative community is something we deeply value.
WHAT TYPES OF OCCASIONS DO YOU TYPICALLY HOST—ARE THERE ANY UNEXPECTED OR UNIQUE ONES THAT STAND OUT?
Our events really run the gamut – from date nights to birthday parties to baby showers, album launches, company events, slumber parties, bloom bars and proposals.
Our local parks and beautiful green spaces across the area provide the perfect backdrop for our experiences. We also do events in private spaces, homes and AirBNBs.
DO YOU PARTNER WITH LOCAL VENDORS FOR YOUR DECOR AND MATERIALS?
Yes! Partnering with local creatives is one of the best parts of what we do. We’re constantly inspired by the talent in the Nashville area, and we love collaborating with fellow women-owned businesses. From artful charcuterie boards and dreamy desserts to custom signage, balloon installations, and photography—we work with the best to elevate every experience.

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY STANDOUT OR DREAM PICNICS THAT YOU’VE CREATED THAT YOU’RE ESPECIALLY PROUD OF?
There are so many, it’s hard to choose!! A few highlights:
We offer a Picnic “PupUp” – for pet parents who want to spoil their furry friends. We’ve done a bunch of puppy “special occasions” including puppy playdates, birthday parties and meet-and-greets. But one of the most unexpected (and adorable) experiences is a puppy proposal, complete with a dogfriendly wedding cake! It was so cute seeing these adorable pups celebrating their big day. Another standout was our recent collaboration with The Heritage Foundation for this year’s Main Street Festival. We created a Picnic on the Lawn VIP experience on the beautiful grounds of St. Philip’s Church.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR PICNIC POPUP— ARE YOU EXPANDING OFFERINGS, LOCATIONS, OR COLLABORATIONS?
We’re always looking for ways to elevate the experience. Most recently, we introduced our Bloom Bar—a bouquet-making station where guests can create their own arrangements from a curated selection of seasonal blooms. It’s such a beautiful and interactive way to add a personalized, elegant touch to the picnic.
Looking ahead, we’re exploring even more collaborations and curated experiences. Guided by our mission to bring people together to celebrate life’s special occasions, we’re always looking to create magical, memorable moments.

HOW JENNIFER BICKERSTAFF AND ASHLEIGH FRANKS HELP CLIENTS BUILD A LIFE, NOT JUST FIND A LISTING
In Williamson County, where every corner tells a story and every street holds a slice of Southern charm, The Bickerstaff Group is helping clients find more than just a home, they're helping them find a life.
“‘Home’ looks different for everyone, and discovering what that means to each client is one of the most important and rewarding parts of our job,” said Jennifer Bickerstaff. “Just because clients may be looking in the same neighborhood doesn’t mean they’re looking for the same experience.”
With a deep love for Franklin and an intuitive understanding of their clients' needs, Bickerstaff and her business partner, Ashleigh Franks, approach real estate with a philosophy rooted in empathy, attentiveness and local knowledge.
“We have lots of conversations, and the key is to listen closely, ask meaningful questions, and have honest, open dialogue to truly
understand their needs and expectations,” said Bickerstaff. “Often, clients aren’t able to fully articulate what their dream home looks like at first, and that’s okay.”
Rather than viewing real estate as transactional, the Bickerstaff Group sees it as transformational. Whether it’s helping a family relocate to a walkable community or finding the right property for someone seeking privacy and space, lifestyle always comes first.
“Lifestyle is at the heart of everything we consider when helping clients find a home,” said Franks. “It all starts with truly getting to know our clients, having meaningful conversations about how they live now and how they hope to live in the future.”
That personalized touch is made even stronger by their connection to the community. Bickerstaff, who currently serves as President of the Williamson County Association of REALTORS®, knows that the best guidance comes from being fully present in the places she serves.
“I’m truly living and breathing this community every day,” she said. “I’m not just dining at the restaurants or shopping at the local stores. I’m talking to the staff, the owners, and the people around me.”
She added, “When you take the time to really know the people around you, you gain insight that no online listing or market report can offer. That’s what allows me to guide clients with honesty, heart, and a true sense of what it means to call this place home.”
This connection has led to powerful client experiences, including one that still stands out.
“One of our most memorable experiences was helping Ryan and Laura, clients who have since become dear friends,” said Bickerstaff. “While they had a clear wish list, what truly mattered was finding a place where they could see their life dreams take shape.”
“We toured several properties, but when we pulled into ‘the one’, we all just knew,” she said. “It wasn’t perfect on paper, but
it had heart. It aligned not just with what they needed, but with how they wanted to live.”
“Being part of that journey and watching their dream unfold step by step is exactly why we love what we do,” she said. “It’s never just about a house; it’s about helping people find the place where their life can truly happen.”
Supporting clients through the emotional ups and downs of buying or selling a home is also a central part of the group’s role.
“Buying or selling a home is an incredibly personal experience, and it often comes with a wide range of emotions, from the excitement of a new beginning to the stress of saying goodbye,” said Franks. “We see our role as more than just real estate professionals. We’re steady guides, thoughtful listeners, and sometimes even a shoulder to lean on.”
“When challenges arise, as they sometimes do, we stay calm, solution-oriented, and focused on protecting our clients’ interests,” said Bickerstaff. “We’re in it together every step of the way.”
A key strength of the Bickerstaff Group is their team approach, which ensures clients always feel supported.
“With The Bickerstaff Group, our clients don’t just get one agent, they get both of us, fully engaged and working together from start to finish,” said Franks.
“Even when I’m tied up with board responsibilities, clients never have to wait—Ashleigh is always just a call or text away,” said Bickerstaff.
This team dynamic not only ensures seamless service but allows them to draw from different perspectives, especially when introducing clients to Williamson County’s hidden gems.
“This is where the strength of our team really shines,” said Franks. “Because we’re in different stages of life and immersed in different parts of the community, we bring unique perspectives to the table.”
“Jennifer loves introducing clients to local favorites like Kimbro’s and Fox & Locke for live music and a great time,” she said. “We both adore the restaurant scene in Franklin. Saffire and Red Pony are long-time favorites, as well as the Franklin Farmers Market, which is such a vibrant part of the community.”
“I’m constantly out and about, meeting people and exploring new places, while Ashleigh is deeply rooted in the parenting world in Franklin,” said Bickerstaff.
The team also helps clients think beyond the present moment when making big decisions.
“Balancing current market trends with long-term priorities is one of the most important aspects of what we do,” said Bickerstaff. “We stay up to date on key factors like interest rates, inventory levels, and pricing shifts, but we also remind our clients that market conditions are always changing.”
“Sometimes people feel pressure to pursue what’s popular or what others are doing,” said Bickerstaff. “But we gently guide them back to what they told us matters most. Whether that’s having space to entertain, enjoying walkable surroundings, or being in a setting that feels right for their pace of life.”
“Ultimately, we want to ensure that our clients feel confident in their decision today and content with it for years to come,” Franks added.
For The Bickerstaff Group, helping someone find the right home is just the beginning. It's about helping them build the kind of life they’ve always imagined.

Beloved Actor and The EZ Street Band Bring An Unforgettable Night Of Music To The Franklin Theatre
Best known for his iconic voice work on The Simpsons and a string of memorable film and TV roles, Hank Azaria is now channeling a different kind of spotlight away from the screen. The Emmy-winning actor has been on the road with his Bruce Springsteen tribute band, Hank Azaria & The EZ Street Band, celebrating the poetry of The Boss with reverential shows of incredible music, storytelling, audience interaction and hero worship. What began as a passion project among friends has grown into a seasoned tour with new dates regularly being added, drawing fans of both Springsteen and Azaria to venues across the country. Franklin Lifestyle had the pleasure of asking Azaria all about it.
SO TELL ME ABOUT THE TOUR. YOU’VE BEEN PERFORMING AND TOURING FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW. WHAT’S THE EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE FOR YOU?
It’s literally been some of the most fun I’ve ever had. I didn’t know it was a dream of mine until I started doing it. And I love this music. I’ve loved really learning to improve as a singer which I never took seriously before. I love raising money for charity, which I’ve been doing for 30 years. It’s really one of my favorite things I’ve ever done in my life.
HAD YOU PLANNED THIS FOR A WHILE OR WAS IT SOMETHING THAT YOU JUST DECIDED WHEN YOU TURNED 60?
I just wanted to cheer myself up around turning 60. I really did! And so I decided to throw this reverse surprise party where I told all my friends - most of them are Springsteen fans - that I had a Springsteen cover band coming. I didn’t tell them that I’d been working for months to be the front man on it. I surprised them with it and it went so well that we decided not to stop doing it. That night we raised around $30K for our foundation. It just went so well, we said, ‘Why don’t we keep doing this?’ And now I’m really kinda obsessed with it.
I’VE READ THAT YOU’VE MET BRUCE TWICE NOW AND BOTH TIMES IT DIDN’T REALLY GO SO WELL.
I just fanboyed so hard on that poor man. My friend calls it “Bruce juice.” It’s just that reaction that people have when they see Bruce Springsteen and I certainly am guilty of it. But Bruce was really gracious to me. I was just a babbling idiot.
WHAT DID BRUCE MEAN TO YOU THAT MADE YOU WANT TO PURSUE THIS?
Well, I actually got to tell him this, which I tried to express in a calm manner, but it came out crazy, was that his music meant a lot to me. Especially when I was a teenager. I had pretty dark, lonely, difficult times as a teenager, and his music really got me through it. Not just his music, but his talks, as we called them, the monologuing he would do in concert, and it really encouraged me to be a creative person, to pursue my dreams when really no one else in my life would or could. And apart from just loving his music and that bringing me so much joy over my life, he really was the kind of teenage hero that actually had impact. His message seems to be, “You can do what you want to do in your life if you just really put all your heart and soul into it,” and it really affected me.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE SONG THAT YOU LIKE TO DO LIVE?
It’s really hard for me to pick. I think “Jungleland.” It’s my favorite song. That was my favorite song growing up, and I think it’s my favorite song to do live, but it’s really hard to pick. I really also love doing “Thunder Road,” “Born to Run,” “Prove It All Night” and “Streets of Fire.” We do about 20, 25 songs, and I love all of them.
“It’s literally been some of the most fun I’ve ever had. I didn’t know it was a dream of mine until I started doing it.”
TELL ME A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE FOUR THROUGH NINE FOUNDATION YOU STARTED.
I started it with my wife about five years ago. We were giving so much to different causes, primarily education, social justice, and health and wellness and recovery. We’re both sober people, so it just made it easier to form a foundation and give from there, and that teed us up. When I turned 60, I had forgotten to say no gifts, so we re-emailed everyone and said, “No gifts, but if you like, you can donate to our foundation,” and we raised $30,000 that night! Forming the foundation made it a lot easier to give, because it’s just money that’s set aside and it’s all set up, and I’m really glad I did that.
WHAT DOES YOUR WIFE THINK OF ALL THIS? DOES SHE TRAVEL WITH YOU WHEN YOU DO YOUR BRUCE TOUR?
Occasionally. It’s funny. At first she was really worried for me, because when I was first learning the impression, there was a lot of trial and error. Let’s put it that way. I really had to work at this, really, honestly harder than... I spent my whole adult life doing vocal impressions on one level or another, but this was by far the hardest I’ve ever worked. I think a lot of it was just to distract myself from turning 60, I really do, but I really fell into a rabbit hole with it. And that got annoying because I was screaming Bruce in the house for months, and it didn’t sound very good at first either. I was really learning to do it, so it was really annoying and she was really worried I’d never believe in myself, and trying to break to me, “Maybe you shouldn’t do this kind of thing.” And I blew my voice out too. I was practicing so hard, and Bruce has such a heavy rasp. It was a journey, and then my wife in her 20s had spent a lot of time around the music business and didn’t really love it, so she was having PTSD flashes. She couldn’t believe her husband was entering the music business somehow, because she had never really loved it, but then all’s well that ends well. She sees how much joy it brings me and how much fun we’re
having and how much money we’re raising, and so she’s really on board now.
ARE YOU MORE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR 60S NOW? IT SEEMED LIKE YOU HAD A HARD TIME FIRST TURNING 60, NOW YOU’RE 61. ARE YOU FEELING MORE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR 60S, OR DO YOU STILL HATE IT?
Yeah, I’d rather be 44, I’m not going to lie, but you have no choice, right? To quote Bruce, he said, “You get used to anything. Sooner or later it just becomes your life.” And that’s from his song “Straight Time,” which is an amazing song. I just turned 61 a couple of weeks ago, and didn’t love that either. I found it a little easier than 60, but no. I never used to be that person, to fret about a birthday. You know what I think it was? This is going to sound like a joke and it’s half a joke, but you turn 40 and everybody says, “Ah, 40 is the new 30,” and you turn 50 and everybody goes, “Oh, 50 is the new 40,” and I really noticed that when you turn 60, nobody says 60 is the new anything.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE ACTING OR ARE YOU GOING TO RIDE THIS WAVE AS LONG AS YOU CAN? WHAT’S THE PLAN?
I have a show coming out with Mandy Patinkin, Janet McTeer, Clark Gregg, and Zachary Quinto. That’ll be out soon. I played Thomas Edison in that. It’s called “The Artist” I don’t even know what streaming platform it’s on. I’m also working on a one-man show. I’m actually writing it as we speak and I hope to put it off-Broadway this year.
IS IT A COMEDY? COMEDY ONE-MAN SHOW?
It is. It’s a life story, a living memoir, sort of, and I do a lot of the origin story, a lot of the voices and characters, including Bruce. And I’m the luckiest man in show business in that The Simpsons never ends. We just got contracted for four more years, which will bring us to year 40.

There’s nothing quite like the heavy, sticky feeling of a humid home. Homeowners begin to see and feel the telltale signs: condensation on windows, a persistent dampness in the air, or even mysterious spots forming near vents. Left unchecked, high indoor humidity can invite mold, damage your home, and compromise indoor air quality. Fortunately, local HVAC professionals are ready to help homeowners take proactive steps to manage it.
“Humidity is a really common issue in this region,” said Ross Burns, HVAC Service Manager at Lee Company. “One of the biggest mistakes we see is homeowners leaving their thermostat set to ‘on’ instead of ‘auto.’ That keeps air circulating all the time, even when the system isn’t cooling, and that actually pushes moisture back into the house.”
According to Burns and Caleb Farrar, Operations Manager at Lee Company, maintaining indoor humidity levels between 40 to 55 percent is ideal. But achieving that range requires more than just adjusting your thermostat. It’s about adopting a whole-home approach that includes proper HVAC maintenance, lifestyle adjustments, and sometimes professional intervention.
Excess humidity often reveals itself through subtle but serious symptoms. “You’ll usually see the first signs as spots on the walls or ceilings, especially around vents,” said Farrar. “That’s an early indicator that moisture levels are too high. If it continues, ductwork can start to sweat, which can lead to dripping and eventually mold.” These issues aren't just cosmetic. High humidity levels can warp wood, peel paint, and contribute to unhealthy indoor air. “People forget that it's not just the living areas you need to worry about,” Farrar added. “Humidity in the crawlspace can be just as damaging.”
Crawlspaces and basements often go unnoticed, but they can be major contributors to elevated indoor moisture. “Installing a vapor barrier and sealing the vents is one of the best things you can do,” Burns said. “A properly encapsulated crawlspace paired with a dehumidifier will make a big difference.” Lee Company also recommends routine inspections of HVAC drain lines, especially during peak seasons. “Check the condensate drain,” Burns noted. “If it’s buried in mulch or clogged, moisture won’t be removed efficiently.”
An HVAC system, when functioning properly, serves as the first line of defense against indoor humidity. However, Farrar emphasized the
importance of regular service. “The HVAC system is like a big dehumidifier,” he explained. “But only if it’s maintained. A dirty system won’t operate efficiently, and that affects both cooling and moisture control.” When the HVAC alone isn’t enough a standalone dehumidifier can help. “There are different sizes based on square footage, and they need to be properly matched to the space,” Farrar said. “A professional can help make sure you get one that’s actually going to be effective.” For particularly damp bathrooms, Burns recommends ensuring exhaust fans are working correctly and used consistently. “Let the fan run during and after your shower otherwise moisture just hangs in the air.”
Additionally, simple lifestyle habits also influence indoor humidity. “Keep windows closed and sealed, especially in the summer,” Burns said. “Any outside air that gets in brings moisture with it.” Smart thermostats with built-in humidity sensors can also help. “We can monitor humidity right through the thermostat,” Farrar said. “And if indoor air isn’t filtered well, pollen and dust contribute to mold growth.”
Ultimately, solving indoor humidity problems is about seeing the bigger picture. “It’s funny how all things are connected,” Burns said. “From your windows and HVAC system to the crawlspace.” That means staying on top of maintenance, being mindful of lifestyle habits, and calling in professionals when needed.

Landmark Booksellers Celebrates 20 Years As Franklin’s Favorite Literary Destination
In 2005, Carol and Joel Tomlin purchased what is now the oldest commercial building still standing in Historic Franklin. And for 20 years, Landmark Booksellers has been like a love letter to the community. The Tomlins put their stamp on the building that is rooted in Tennessee history with over 35,000 new, old, and hard-tofind rare and classic books, collectible signed first editions, important new releases, and of course, their own brand of Southern hospitality and warmth. Franklin Lifestyle got to chat with the Tomlins just ahead of the 20th anniversary party later this month.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO OPEN AND RUN A BOOKSTORE 20 YEARS AGO?
Carol: I wanted Joel and I to do something together and I loved to read.
Joel: When Carol and I were married 31 years ago, we said when our youngest child graduated from high school we wanted to find a new adventure we could enjoy doing together. Being an avid book collector, I happened into an antiquarian bookshop in Nashville that I had frequented for 15 years, Dad's Old Bookstore. Ed Penny, the owner informed me he was about to retire and his store was for sale. Carol and I jumped at the opportunity, purchased his inventory and brought it to Franklin.
ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO CHOOSE THE DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN LOCATION BACK THEN?
Carol: We both had previously lived in Franklin and believed it to be a charming and quaint place for a bookstore.
Joel: My ancestors settled in the Peytonsville area around 1802. Williamson County history and historic buildings have been a passion of mine for most of my life. I have always admired our building since the first time I enjoyed fried chicken and chocolate pie there in 1975 when it was home to Dotson's. Thankfully, it came available when we started to look for a location and we were able to purchase it.
WOULD YOU HAVE ANTICIPATED YOUR SUCCESS AND THAT YOU WOULD BE DOING THIS FOR 20 YEARS?
Carol: I was somewhat apprehensive since Amazon was on the rise and bookstores were closing as a result. I don't think I thought about how long we would be doing it but was so looking forward to being able to do something together.
Joel: As in any great adventure you attempt, you are following a vision bolstered by a passion, full of optimism and energy with great expectations. I think I assumed it would be successful and that we would be doing it forever.
DO YOU HAVE ONE FAVORITE MOMENT THAT STANDS OUT FROM THE LAST 20 YEARS?
Carol: My first story hour!
Joel: There are so many, it would be hard to say. Our shop helped "give birth," so to speak, to the Franklin Civil War Roundtable, The Churchill Society of Tennessee, Poetry Group, Southern Authors Group, Southern Music Group, Shortstory Writers Group, hundreds of author book events and signings. Conversations with visitors from practically every country in the world. All favorite moments for sure. However, I would have to say Karen Kingsbury's friendship, her 2012 book, The Bridge and 2015 Hallmark movie of the same title, based on our shop, and her 2020 assistance through a special online exclusive book release offer, which saved our bookshop during the pandemic were the most standout moments. We call Karen our "Guardian Angel" as she, her family, and her devoted fans, who visit us literally every day, have blessed us in so many ways.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF REGARDING THE STORE?
Carol: Our children's room. Can you tell I was a teacher, mother and grandmother?
Joel: Our building, our richly curated selection of books, our devoted, knowledgeable and friendly staff.
TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION YOU HAVE PLANNED.
Carol: It will be a party! Live music, delicious food and drink, great stories, good friends and family. You do not want to miss it!!
Joel: Katie Shands has written a wonderful book regarding the history of our 200+-year-old building and 20-year-old bookshop. These books will be available free to all who attend as well as a storewide book sale and author signing.
HOW MANY BOOKS DO YOU GUYS EACH READ PER MONTH?
Carol: Four, or about one per week
Joel: Ditto
WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE TOMLINS?
Carol: Looking forward to spending time with grandchildren and traveling more.
Joel: We have seven children and 14 grandchildren, and spending time with them is so important at this point in our lives. They keep us busy and on our toes so we are not at the store 12 hours a day, seven days a week as we once were. But we still enjoy going by most days and seeing devoted staff, friends and customers. Check back with me 20 years from now to see if anything has changed!
“I have always admired our building since the first time I enjoyed fried chicken and chocolate pie there in 1975 when it was home to Dotson's.”

“We were graciously greeted at the door by friendly staff. The beautiful interior reminded us of a chic NYC restaurant. The craft cocktails were very good quality and presented perfectly. Every morsel of the food was delicious (the lobster tapas… excellent). The service was impeccable. The perfect spot for date night. Chic, cozy, warm, friendly and inviting”.

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” — Maya Angelou
The metaphor of a butterfly has long symbolized transformation: delicate yet powerful, slow but deliberate, often painful but always beautiful. It’s no surprise, then, that the butterfly holds special meaning for Franklin’s own Mallory Nikolaus. Transformation isn’t just a theme in her home renovation projects, it’s the story of her life.
“It started with my sister, who passed away,” she shares. “The butterfly became a symbol of her, and over the years, I’ve seen it show up again and again.” What began as a quiet reminder of loss has grown into a powerful metaphor for Mallory’s journey. “It’s ironic, but fitting,” she reflects. “The Butterfly is all about change and transformation. And that’s what my life has been. Transformation in so many ways.”
Though her Instagram feed, @MalloryNikolausHome, is full of elegant trim work, inspired décor, clever DIYs, and home renovation updates, Mallory’s real story lies between the posts. “I feel like transformation, the shift from where you’ve been to where you’re going, is my story,” she says.
That story didn’t begin in perfectly lit rooms or curated aesthetics. Raised in a difficult home environment, Mallory knows what it means to long for refuge. “I grew up in dysfunction,” she shares candidly. “I didn’t want that for my family. So, I turned that pain into a power and a passion for creating spaces that feel safe and full of love. It’s in the transformation where the growth happens and where happiness happens.”
She and her husband, Craig, rented for the first decade of their marriage. They lived in a one-bedroom apartment with their two young boys, juggled multiple jobs, and took out student loans while slowly carving out a life together. “We lived the hard life,” she says. “It wasn’t glamorous. Nothing in our home cost more than $40 back then because I thrifted everything,” she adds with a laugh. “But I loved it.”
Her passion began humbly with spray-painting thrift store furniture while Craig was in dental school. “I remember looking at price tags and thinking, ‘That’s not for me.’ But I never stopped believing in what was possible. There was so much pride in taking something broken and making it beautiful.”
Her Instagram offers glimpses into her classic European vibe style and also into her personal life. She shares about her family, her healing, and the sometimes messy, beautiful process of becoming. Through her vulnerability online, Mallory has become more than just a content creator; she’s become a quiet companion to many who are walking through their own valleys.
“People tell me, ‘I found you through a DIY project, but I stayed because of your heart.’ That’s the most meaningful part. I share because I want people to know they’re not alone,” she says
Still, it has not always been easy. “Being vulnerable on the internet is scary,” she admits. “Not everyone meets it with compassion. But the deeper connections make it worth it.” Followers reach out, even years later, saying, “I lost my sister and thought of you. If you could get through it, I can too.” That, she says, is the real reward.
Mallory also knows her style isn’t for everyone, and she’s OK with that. “Not everyone loves my choices, and some people are vocal about it,” she says. “But even that is part of the journey. I spent 30 years as a people-pleaser, hustling for my worth, thinking the more I can produce, the more people will like me. Now, I set boundaries. If you’re in my home or my life, you should feel honored, because that’s not something I give as freely as before.”
Just as their dream home, affectionately dubbed The Monarch Revival, was nearing the redesign finish line, another transformation was taking place. “I’ve never completed an entire house,” Mallory chuckles.
“Life moves us before we get to that point.” The next transformation led them to Franklin nearly a year ago.
Like many families, the Nikolaus crew relocated for the schools, the lifestyle, and the sense of community.
“Our old neighborhood didn’t have a lot of kids,” she says. “We wanted our boys to have friends nearby.”
Now, with Craig’s brother living close by and cousins just down the street, their five boys are thriving.
But Franklin is more than a backdrop. It’s where Mallory’s story continues to unfold. Today, the same woman who once spray-painted thrift store furniture on a budget is documenting the renovation of her current Franklin home, aptly named the Monarch Colonial. She is quick to remind her followers this isn’t HGTV. “This is my actual life and I love that I can
share this process in real-time,” she says. And she is loving every chaotic and beautiful minute of it.
Being transparent and authentic is important to Mallory. This is evident when she talks about her renovations and DIY projects. “We bought a smaller home in a great neighborhood and decided to invest in the finishes,” she explains. “But I never forget what it was like to be at the bottom, look at numbers and think, ‘There’s no way.’ That’s why when I post about renovations, I always include the real time and the real costs.”
She’s also refreshingly honest about her mental health transformation. Living with ADHD and OCD, Mallory has learned to embrace her mind’s complexity as a kind of superpower. “When I’m healthy, they balance each other beautifully. I can get so much done,” she says. “But when I’m under stress, either one can take over, and it is debilitating. I’ve learned to work with that and how to listen to myself. And Craig is a huge support offering comfort and balance.”
Craig, her husband of almost 20 years and parttime sidekick helper, remains her biggest cheerleader. “We eloped after dating for just three months,” she says with a laugh. “Everyone thought it wouldn’t last. But we keep choosing each other, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.”
Now, Mallory is living a life far from where she
started, surrounded by beauty, supported by love, and followed by half a million people on Instagram who find comfort in her honesty, creativity, and heart. Through her DIY projects and personal stories, she shows others it’s possible to reimagine their lives, to start small, dream big, and believe in what could be. But she doesn’t see herself as finished.
“I still feel like I’m transforming,” she says with a smile. “But maybe that’s the point. Maybe we’re always becoming. I don’t think I’ll ever be ‘done.’ And that’s OK.”
Because in Mallory Nikolaus’s world, the beauty isn’t just in the before-and-after, it’s in the becoming.

HOW GOLDFISH SWIM SCHOOL BUILDS WATER SAFETY, CONFIDENCE, AND LIFELONG SKILLS IN EVERY CHILD
It’s hot and sticky, which means it’s swim season y’all! Whether it’s a lake, ocean or pool, taking a dip to cool off is something we will likely take advantage of this summer. But confidence in the water helps the little ones in our lives enjoy splashing and swimming the safest way possible. We sat down with Goldfish Swim School-Franklin’s owner Lincoln Walden to learn how they nurture water safety and confidence that will last a lifetime.
GOLDFISH SWIM SCHOOL IS KNOWN FOR ITS VIBRANT, CHILD-FOCUSED ENVIRONMENT. HOW DOES YOUR CURRICULUM GO BEYOND SWIM SAFETY TO BUILD LIFELONG CONFIDENCE IN YOUNG SWIMMERS?
At Goldfish, we’re not just teaching water safety, although it’s our top priority. We’re also helping kids build life skills that go far beyond the pool.
Our award-winning curriculum was designed with our Science of SwimPlay approach in mind, blending swim technique with social-emotional development like confidence, resilience and goal-setting. Each small win in the water is celebrated in a big way. When kids hear “You got this!” during a lesson, they carry that confidence into everything they do.
CAN YOU SHARE A SPECIFIC STORY OR MOMENT WHEN YOU SAW A CHILD TRANSFORM THROUGH YOUR SWIM PROGRAM, NOT JUST IN SKILL BUT IN SPIRIT?
I think of two young boys who were terrified of the water and wouldn’t even put a toe in the pool. After consistent lessons, both learned to swim freestyle across the entire pool. Seeing their smiles made it clear how proud they were to conquer that fear. Their confidence soared, and that transformation was unforgettable.
YOUR FACILITY USES A WARM-WATER POOL AND FUN DÉCOR. HOW DO THESE ELEMENTS SUPPORT YOUR MISSION OF FOSTERING COMFORT AND CONFIDENCE FOR KIDS?
From the moment families walk in, everything is designed to spark joy, comfort and trust. Our 90-degree shiver-free pool and tropical, colorful setting help kids feel relaxed and excited instead of anxious. These details reduce fear and make learning feel like fun, laying the groundwork for safe and confident swimmers.
PARENTS OFTEN TALK ABOUT THE JOY THEIR CHILDREN FIND IN SWIM CLASS. HOW DOES GOLDFISH MAKE LEARNING FEEL LIKE PLAY?
Fun is essential to how we teach. When kids are having fun, they’re more engaged and open to learning. We use themed lessons, imaginative swim techniques and playful progress tracking to create a joyful experience. We celebrate every milestone, so children stay motivated and build real skills while enjoying themselves.

MANY CHILDREN BEGIN SWIM LESSONS WITH FEAR OR HESITATION. WHAT APPROACH DOES YOUR TEAM USE TO BUILD TRUST AND INDEPENDENCE, EVEN IN THE MOST NERVOUS BEGINNERS?
We meet every child where they are, using patience, encouragement and our signature “You got this!” attitude. Our instructors are trained to build trust gradually, using positive reinforcement like high-fives and ribbons. Consistent routines help turn nerves into confidence. We celebrate every brave moment, whether it’s going underwater or graduating a swim level.
YOUR INSTRUCTORS ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR TRAINING AND PATIENCE. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GOLDFISH TEAM MEMBER, AND HOW DO THEY SHAPE A CHILD’S EXPERIENCE?
We look for people who embody our core values and genuinely want to make a difference. Our team is made up of Wavemakers—individuals who bring purpose, energy and empathy to every shift. All instructors complete certified training and ongoing development, but it’s their heart and passion that truly impact each swimmer. They cheer the loudest, connect on a personal level and help kids discover their potential, one swim at a time.
HOW DOES GOLDFISH KEEP PARENTS INFORMED AND INVOLVED IN THEIR CHILD’S PROGRESS?
We believe communication is key. Parents receive real-time progress updates through our mobile app, weekly instructor feedback and have access to comfortable viewing areas. We also celebrate progress with ribbons and report cards. Our team is always available to talk through next steps or offer customized support. We’re here for the kids and the parents, because we know families thrive when everyone feels encouraged.
HOW DO YOUR PROGRAMS SUPPORT GROWTH BEYOND SWIMMING, SUCH AS PROMOTING DISCIPLINE, FOCUS AND SELF-ESTEEM?
Our swim lessons are about much more than safety. Kids learn to set goals, stay focused and persevere—even when a task is tough. They also develop teamwork and communication skills. Over time, these small lessons build big confidence. You can see it in their smiles and pride when they master a skill. These are life lessons they carry far beyond the pool.
WHY IS WATER SAFETY IMPORTANT, EVEN FOR FAMILIES WHO DON’T LIVE NEAR A POOL OR LAKE?
Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children under age 4, and it can happen in seconds, anywhere water is present. That includes bathtubs, backyard pools and travel spots. Swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88 percent. At Goldfish, we’re committed to increasing access to lessons and educating families in the Franklin, Tennessee, community and beyond. Our goal is to help every child feel safer and more prepared around water.

A flight to South Korea takes about 16 hours. But you only have to drive four hours to have an unusually authentic Korean experience in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
The Seoul of the South Food Tour with host Sarah Park provides an introduction to Korean food and lifestyle without requiring the long flight to Asia. The four-hour group tour takes you to several of the area's restaurants and bakeries. As Gwinnett County is home to the largest Korean population in the Southern U.S, it's no surprise that there are dozens of restaurants that encapsulate Korea's rich culinary culture. Below are three highly recommended spots to set your Seoul food taste buds ablaze.
For more traditional Korean fare, Jang Su Jang, is the place to go. Notable menu items include Haemul Pajeon, also known as the seafood pancake, the Dotoleemool Moochim, acorn jelly and veggies, and Bossam Jungsik, steamed pork slices with cabbage. Jang Su Jang means "this meeting place" so it's only fitting to grab a bite with a friend here. Jang-su-jangduluth.res-menu.com
Much like the South, Korea loves their barbeque. Stop at Honey Pig, where you will enjoy an authentic Korean BBQ experience featuring pork belly, brisket, chicken bulgogi, steamed egg, rice, corn cheese and more. HoneyPigUSA.com

ARTICLE BY KIRSTEN HARRINGTON, ORIGINALLY PRODUCED FOR MODERN SOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIRSTEN HARRINGTON
I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders, and stepped inside. I had been warned that I might feel overwhelmed on my first visit to Buc-ee’s.
On a mission to understand what makes this Texasbased chain of mega-sized travel centers so popular, my husband and I hit the road to visit the Daytona Beach, Florida location. The enticing aroma of smoked brisket met me at the door.
“The key is just to focus,” a friend advised. With everything from fresh barbecue and decadent fudge to Buc-ee’s themed birthday hats and pickled okra competing for my attention, it was good advice.
Buc-ee’s and the namesake beaver mascot are the brainchild of founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin III, who opened the first store in 1982 near Lake Jackson, Texas. Now with over 50 locations stretching across the South and beyond, Buc-ee’s has an almost cult-like following. Cheap gas and pristine restrooms lure travelers in; extensive offerings of food, clothing, and souvenirs win them back.
If you think fueling up on the road means grabbing a bag of chips or a lukewarm slice of pizza, you’ve clearly never been to Buc-ee’s. Think of it like a 24/7 behemoth buffet of hot food, sweets, snacks, and more beverage choices than you can shake a stick at.
The star of the show is the Texas Round-Up in the center of the store, where fresh brisket is chopped and smothered in barbecue sauce as customers watch, eagerly waiting to snatch up a warm sandwich. Pulled
pork, smoked turkey, sausage on a stick—the smell of meaty goodness almost made me question my plantbased eating resolve.
I left my husband at the meat stand and went to explore the selection of salads, fresh-cut fruit, and yogurt parfaits. While I was happy to see so many healthy options, I will admit to sneaking a tiny bite of my husband’s tender, smoky, sliced brisket sandwich, in the name of research, of course.
It would be easy to experience “snack paralysis” with aisle after aisle of puffed corn Buc-ee’s Nug-ees, Chees-ee Curls, and potato chips in flavors I’d never heard of like Cajun Boil and Bold ‘n Blended. You can always indulge in a few free samples while you make up your mind.
There’s fresh brewed java to ward off road trip fatigue. The original location has a dedicated Buc-ee’s Beanery coffee bar. Other locations take gas station coffee to the next level with complimentary flavored syrups, creamers, and non-dairy milks.
Need some provisions for a picnic or your AirBnb? The gourmet food corner has rows of salsa, barbecue sauce, jams, and canned goods. Where else can you pick up a jar of pickled quail eggs, Carolina Reaper salsa, and a gallon of milk in one stop?
Frequent traveler Robin O’Neal Smith lives in Pennsylvania, but every time she heads south, she makes a beeline for Buc-ee’s, having visited the iconic service centers in four different states.
“Jewelry, shoes, swimsuits for the grandkids, dishes for the motorhome—it’s easier to say what I don’t shop for.”
“Sometimes we go 20 miles out of our way to visit a Buc-ee’s,” said O’Neal Smith, who has a fondness for their beef jerky, especially the maple cherry. The Wall of Jerky tempts shoppers with dozens of flavors like Korean BBQ and Lemon Pepper. She also likes to browse the household section, picking up decorative items for herself and unique gifts for friends.
When the Daytona Beach, Florida, Buc-ee’s opened in 2021, Orlando resident Janet Massey decided it was the perfect excuse for a pilgrimage.
“We needed to have an end-of-the-year meeting for my church ministry team, so we decided to make it a road trip,” she said. Massey, who travels frequently in her motorhome, has been a Buc-ee’s fan for years.
Most of the group had never been to a Buc-ee’s, so Massey introduced them to caramel-flavored Beaver Nuggets, cinnamon rolls, and other delights. “It was such a fun day. Now that I think about it, we may need to go again,” she said.
Massey also admits to stopping at Buc-ee’s for some retail therapy. While her husband is distracted by the barbecue offerings, she snaps up some souvenirs.
“Jewelry, shoes, swimsuits for the grandkids, dishes for the motorhome—it’s easier to say what I don’t shop for,” she laughed.
Buc-ee’s fans can commemorate their visit with branded beaver hoodies, blankets, and coffee mugs. Need a new dog dish, sunglasses, or grilling tongs? They have those too.
The two basic requirements of a noteworthy rest stop are clean bathrooms and affordable gas. A good car wash is a bonus. Buy the “works” car wash at Bucee’s and you’ll ride through one of the world’s longest, and get a discount on gas. Measuring just shy of a football field, the one near Katy, Texas holds the Guinness World Record.
“Well-stocked,” “pristine,” and “spotless” are just a few of the superlatives used to describe Buc-ee’s bathrooms. One location was even voted as the cleanest bathroom in America.
Capitalizing on their restroom reputation, Buc-ee’s even sells magnets with the slogans, “Your throne awaits,” and “You can hold it.” Sparkling clean floors, double sets of toilet paper holders and attendants directing traffic are part of the reason for the accolades.
But what impressed me the most was the decor. Walking into the ladies’ room at the Daytona Beach Buc-ee’s was like walking into an art gallery. Western-themed artwork and Florida landscape paintings hang on the wall and are available for purchase. Talk about one-stop shopping.
Visiting the world’s largest convenience store is a bit like visiting a foreign country, one with friendly people, clean bathrooms, and good food. I left with some warm peach cobbler, a bag of Buc-ee’s White Cheddar Nug-ees, and a whole new appreciation for this beloved American icon.

When I was catering, one of my most popular warm weather appetizers was a Peach, Tomato, and Goat Cheese Bruschetta. Fresh seasonal fruits were tossed with a homemade balsamic vinegar dressing and served over a log of goat cheese. Spread onto toasted baguette slices, it was a hit with every crowd. Here I’ve transformed the hors d’oeuvre into a scrumptious pizza. Whip up this healthy snack and pair with a refreshing light cocktail for an easy summer dinner perfect for sharing with friends.

The Listening Room’s founder and visionary, Chris Blair, "set out to create a space that put the song and the songwriter first." As of 2024, The Listening Room has supported Nashville songwriters by selling over 130,000 tickets to fans from 40 countries across the globe and 48 U.S. states from coast to coast. The venue has hosted over 800 shows featuring over 1,000 songwriters on its stages, and its monthly "Sound Good, Do Good" shows raised over $100,000 for worthy causes throughout the year.
The stories. Oh, the stories!
Guests experience the hits in a way they’ve never heard them before, as the songs are portrayed by the writers themselves. It's a great, intimate vibe between songwriter and guest, as guests learn how the writers came up with the ideas for the songs, why they they wrote it and sometimes even what artist it was originally intended for but didn't end up recording it. It's a behindthe-scenes peek at the business of songwriting.
After their performances, the artists are around to take photos, share more stories or just say hello to fans and guests.
The Listening Room Cafe was founded in 2006 in historic downtown Franklin. Owner, Chris Blair, a singer/songwriter himself, realized he couldn’t find a local venue that he felt had the sound and atmosphere that Nashville artists deserved. The Franklin location quickly became a local favorite, garnering the title of “the Bluebird Cafe outside of Nashville.” The venue changed locations two more times, once in 2008 and again in 2013 before finding its permanent home in 2017 at the historic International Harvester Tractor building at 618 4th Avenue South.
Can't be in Nashville? Check out Stories Behind The Songs with Chris Blair. The weekly podcast features in-depth interviews with the true stories behind the songs and the struggles in the industry with some of the biggest names in music. Franklin resident, Robert Inman, playwright, novelist, and songwriter, opens up about his latest book, Villages, and the real-life stories that shaped its powerful portrait of healing.
TELL US ABOUT VILLAGES.
Well, I'm a veteran myself of the army. I was never in combat, but I've always been particularly interested in the lives of veterans after they come back from duty overseas, especially those who encountered combat. I started reading everything I could find and interviewing veterans. Jonas Boulware, the central character, he's not based on any particular veteran, he’s a composite. Although, you know, with any writer, there's a lot of me in there.
HOW DID YOU APPROACH WRITING ABOUT TRAUMA WITH AUTHENTICITY AND CARE?
I interviewed veterans who had been medics in Iraq and Afghanistan and they were so honest and forthcoming. They really sort of bared their souls to me. My nephew is a combat veteran, and the best reaction I got was from him when he said ‘the more I read it, the more it seemed like a snapshot of my life.’
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO FRANKLIN, AND HOW DOES IT INFLUENCE YOUR WRITING?
“What brought us to Franklin is family. We live five blocks from our younger daughter and her husband and our 11-year-old grandson. We love Franklin. We love the historic nature of the community.”

Indulge in Tuscan serenity, savor life’s richness, and rediscover yourself
The soft morning light filters through the curtains as you awake to birdsong and a gentle breeze. Stepping onto the balcony, you behold endless vineyards rippling in the Tuscan hills and can’t believe this paradise is real.
Walking downstairs, you’re greeted by many new faces of people smiling and excited to see you, new friends, gathered around a long wooden table immaculately set with steaming quiche, luscious fruit, warm bread, and Italian cappuccino.
This is just the beginning of days spent practicing yoga in nature’s rhythms, discovering ancient towns, and pausing to savor beauty at every turn.
If you can envision waking up like this, you’re ready for a yoga retreat with Scott Moore.
Retreats are an investment—in your truest self—the part of you that gets lost in the rush of daily life.
