I’m
The Nest at Greenfield Hill is an Early Childhood Community focusing on the Reggio Emilia approach and daily connection with nature. We aim to protect the magic of early childhood and to create a space where children are seen, supported, and encouraged to evolve into their authentic selves. Our food program promotes diverse eating of real food through daily exposure to our menu. We are excited to welcome families to our new child care and early learning school in September 2025!
This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they’re the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, curiosity, and limitless potential shape the world in ways we can’t always measure.
As parents and caregivers, we devote ourselves to nurturing their growth, guiding them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget: children also shape us. They fill our lives with joy, laughter, and meaning.
We’d be remiss not to celebrate the furry (or feathered, or scaled!) family members who often grow up alongside them. Pets offer unconditional love and teach invaluable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and compassion. The bond between people and their pets can be truly transformative, creating deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.
At the heart of both children and pets is a simple truth: they need us. Our love and care shape who they become—and in return, they shape us right back.
This issue is dedicated to the children—whether they’re toddlers, tweens, or teens— and pets who fill our homes and hearts with love. May it inspire you to pour a little extra tenderness into the lives you nurture—human or otherwise.
Here’s to our kids, and to our pets who make everything better!
Cheers!

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A FIRST HIKE WITH ACTIVE DOG
THE EVENING BEFORE THE HIKE:
Clients can expect a personalized message from their dog’s assigned hiker the night before the scheduled hike. This message includes an introduction and a link to the hiker’s bio on the Active Dog website, so clients can learn more about who will be caring for and adventuring with their pup.
Active Dog shares a special introduction post on their Facebook page to welcome the new pup to the pack. These posts are always a highlight, filled with fun facts that owners submit about their dog—like what snacks they love most, their favorite spot to nap, any impressive tricks they know, and even quirky personality traits. It’s a fun and engaging way for the Active Dog community to get to know each new hiker.
THE MORNING OF THE HIKE:
On the morning of the scheduled adventure, clients receive a text message with an estimated time of arrival for pickup. Active Dog provides a 1–2 hour window, allowing flexibility and planning ease for the day ahead.
When the hiker arrives, the dog is picked up right from home and escorted to the van—no need for the owner to be there. Active Dog understands how busy life can be, which is why they’ve made pickup and drop-off seamless. Many clients provide access via a hidden key, garage code, unlocked door, or concierge/key fob arrangements for apartments. Hikers will simply pop their heads in, call for the pup, and head out on the adventure.
Dogs ride in specially outfitted Active Dog vans with 8–10 other dogs, all eager for the day’s hike. The ride itself is part of the fun, as dogs begin to bond and settle into their pack for the day.
THE HIKE:
Hikes take place on Active Dog’s private, fully fenced-in hiking properties located in Pawling, NY and Bethlehem, CT. These secure, spacious lands are designed for safe, off-leash exploration, giving dogs the freedom to roam, sniff, run with the pack, and even take a splash in the on-site streams.
Each hike lasts 60–90 minutes and is always supervised by experienced handlers. Dogs are carefully monitored throughout the adventure to ensure they’re safe, comfortable, and having fun. If a dog is new to off-leash experiences, no problem—Active Dog is committed to setting every pup up for success. Each dog’s recall and comfort level are evaluated before they are allowed off leash. Some dogs remain on leash for several hikes before they graduate to full off-leash freedom with their new fur friends.
After the hike, dogs are loaded back into the van and dropped off one by one back at home. The total time dogs are out of the house is typically between 3–5 hours, giving them valuable time outside,
mental stimulation, physical exercise, and socialization. By the time they return home, they’re ready for a cozy nap and some rest.
At the end of the day, clients receive a full report about how their pup did on their first hike. This includes a written summary, along with photos and video links showcasing the dog’s adventure on the trails. It’s a wonderful way to feel connected to the experience, even if the owner isn’t home for the pickup and drop-off.
Whether a dog is new to hiking or already a trail pro, Active Dog is committed to making every hike a safe, enriching, and joyful experience—for dogs and their humans alike.
ACTIVE DOG’S TOP TIPS FOR A HEALTHY AND HAPPY SUMMER!
• Kiddie pools, cooling mats and splash pads can be a super fun and safe way to keep your pup cool.
• Don’t let them drink from stagnant water sources or water that looks like it has algae on it.
• Get outside early or late afternoon (our trails are shaded so a good opportunity to send them for hikes with us if it’s hot).
• Make sure to scope out your yard or trail for any poisonous mushrooms, posion ivy/oak, snakes.
• Bring water for both you and your pup! If they have just done some heavy exercise, let them gradually cool down before giving them too much water.
• Stay cool and know when it’s too hot out. For bigger dogs like Bernese Mountain Dogs, you can buy cold vests that go in the freezer.
• Tick checks. Ticks are rampant this time of year. Always make sure to check your pup (and yourself!) for ticks!
• If hiking on an unfamiliar trail, make sure you check if dogs are allowed and if they need to be on/off leash so you can prepare accordingly.

Dogs Love Pet Pantry’s Annual Dog Days
ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEOFFREY TISCHMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
TISCHMAN PETS PHOTOGRAPHY
Pet Pantry’s Fairfield Dog Days is a beloved summer kickoff for residents and their furry companions. This family-owned Fairfield staple has been deeply involved in local dog events for over 30 years, beginning with the first “Puttin’ on the Dog” event in Greenwich, CT.
After 80 years in business, Pet Pantry continues to measure success by its impact on the community. As Executive Vice President Adam Jacobson puts it, “We serve as a testament to the fact that a company’s success is not measured by the money it makes, but by the difference it makes in the well-being of its customers and the community it serves. On our best days, our success is measured in drool and happy tail wags.”
Dog Days is Pet Pantry’s signature annual event in Fairfield, drawing families, dog lovers, and animal advocates together for a fun and meaningful day. Professional dog trainers, behaviorists, and veterinarians are on-site to educate and engage attendees, while the event also features plenty of activities for the whole family. This year’s highlights included face painting, food trucks, a bone bar, ice cream, a splash park, and more. As always, proceeds from Dog Days benefit the community and Pet Pantry’s non-profit partners. This year’s event supported Operation Hope, Team Woofgang & Co., and Adopt-A-Dog. The impact is undeniable.
“Between our community events, Donatable Dollars program, K9 Feeding Project which provides support for working police dogs, direct contributions to Adopt-ADog, along with other nonprofits and individuals, we have contributed well over half a million dollars to our local communities in total throughout the years.”
Pet Pantry’s support for dogs in need has also been particularly impactful. “Working with Adopt-A-Dog through the years, we have assisted in adopting hundreds of dogs. Our Dog Days events alone have helped place over 60 dogs into forever homes.”
Local businesses and events that support our community—and our animals—are part of what makes this town so special. These businesses are the cornerstone of a vibrant and robust local economy and help bring our neighborhoods to life. Adam emphasizes, “As a family-owned business, we consider the communities we operate in to be our extended family; therefore, community outreach is really important to us. We work tirelessly to embed our company firmly within the local communities. In order to achieve our annual fundraising goals, our entire company selflessly takes on an enormous amount of extra work beyond our regular business workflow. While this certainly adds to our workload throughout the year, we recognize that this is truly what fuels our soul as a company.”

NICOLE RENDE OF LATCHSMITH SUPPORTS NEW PARENTS WITH EXPERTISE AND CARE
ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM
PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEIDI CURRAN PHOTOGRAPHY
If only babies came with instructions—especially in those early years when parents are overwhelmed, overtired, run-down, and somehow still blissed out. That’s exactly where lactation counselor and educator Nicole Rende of Latchsmith - comes to the rescue. Nicole is the expert I wish I had in those early days… months… even years. (Nicole, do you do teen attitude adjustments too?) Her deep expertise is matched only by her calming, approachable, positive presence—something you feel the moment you meet her.
Nicole’s knowledge comes from her intensive training, studying with the Healthy Children Project, and being certified through The Academy of Lactation Policy and Practices. However, she’s candid in describing her own postpartum journey after the birth of her first son. She’s been through it too. “It really shocked me how hard it was emotionally. I had been a nanny for over 10 years and I really thought I knew what to do. But the struggle with emotions, hormones and feeding my son, who had trouble latching, was just too much.” Battling anxiety and depression, she needed support and found that guidance with a local mom’s group run by a lactation counselor along with postpartum therapy. “I surpassed my feeding goal and felt like myself again. Because of that, I wanted to give back and pay it forward! Becoming a Lactation Counselor myself felt like the best place to start.”
Since building Latchsmith, Nicole’s compassionate approach has been led by her patience and kindness, making sure her clients feel seen and validated. She works with both first-time and experienced parents throughout the Tri-state area. Nicole is quick to note, “I had challenges again with my second baby that were completely different than my first. Every birth and feeding experience is different. I love that the clients I help are all different. It makes the job exciting and I’m always learning since every situation is unique.”
Among the first steps of support after an initial intake and assessment is assisting in creating a reasonable plan to reach desired goals. “I help the parent find and set up an ideal place to feed the baby and assist in positioning for the best latch. Many times, it just takes some simple tweaks. Sometimes it takes more. Together with both parents, we will create a plan to get mom and baby feeding happily.” Also in Latchsmith’s tool box is helping with proper bottle feeding techniques, pumping and flange fitting, sleeping and any other concerns parents may have. Nicole offers prenatal workshops, support groups, and private consults, all with the goal of educating and empowering her clients. “I also support parents ready to end their breastfeeding journey. This can be a very sensitive and emotional time for both the parent and the child. They learn how to navigate and accomplish their new goals.” Another benefit of having Nicole on speed dial is she can collaborate with parents of toddlers who are ready to be diaper-free with her Potty Learning Workshops and consults. “I refer to this as potty learning. It is a learning process for both the parent and child.
I cover the four key stages for potty learning success. The approach is gentle, stress-free and all-inclusive. Her one piece of advice? Parents need to be aligned on their goals for the baby. “The birth experience and the hours and days after can be so hard! If both parents know their plan and goals before, they will have an easier time expressing that to their team.” Nicole is a vital support system for parents during one of the most meaningful and fraught stages of life. The impact on young families and the relationships she cultivates with her clients is truly special. “I am honored that parents invite me in to help them at such a delicate time. I remember how I felt, and I always want to be sensitive and respectful of what they need. When parents message me months later or send pictures of their babies growing and happy, I am so grateful I chose to do this work.”

“Modern
Born out of her parenting journey, Alphabet Academy and The Nest Founder Amy Small began her lustrous career in childcare and early education after being inspired by her kids’ impactful Montessori experience. Borrowing from those practices juxtaposed with her thoughtful, intentional approach, Amy grew her business into the magical place it is today with the anticipation of her 5th location opening in Greenfield Hill.
“Our mission is to protect the magic of early childhood and create a space where children are truly seen, supported and allowed to grow into exactly who they are.”
Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE FAIRFIELD AS THE LOCATION FOR YOUR NEWEST PRESCHOOL?
A: The town has become an extension of my home. It’s familiar, meaningful and full of memories. One of the things that makes Fairfield so special is the incredible number of young families who live here. It’s a vibrant, growing community and with that comes a very real and ongoing need for high-quality childcare. I saw that while there are some good programs in the area, I wasn’t finding anything that reflected the kind of environment we’ve built at Alphabet and The Nest—one that’s grounded in emotional responsiveness, progressive practices, nature-based experiences and a deep respect for each child as an individual— not to mention our farm-to-table food program. That sparked the idea. We’ve been looking for the right location for a long time and are so excited to finally open our doors in Fairfield this September.
Q: WHAT AGE GROUPS DO YOUR PROGRAMS SERVE AND HOW DOES YOUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY SUPPORT CHILDREN AT EACH STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT?
We think of the classroom environment as the “third teacher.” It’s a living part of the learning experience, intentionally designed to reflect and support where the children are and where they’re going. This kind of teaching takes time and reflection, so we build dedicated planning time outside of the classroom for our individual educators and teaching teams each week. It’s not just teaching—it’s a creative process, an art form. And it’s what makes this work so meaningful.
A: Our Fairfield location will serve families with children from 1 to 5 years old. Our work is grounded in the Reggio Emilia philosophy. At its core, that means we follow the child’s lead. Our educators spend a lot of time observing and getting to know who each child is, where they are developmentally, and what genuinely interests them. From there, we build a curriculum that responds to each group and individual’s unique needs and passions.
Q: WHAT IS THE NEST’S OVERALL MISSION?
A: Our program is rooted in play, guided by the RIE philosophy, and deeply child-centered. We aim to preserve childhood in a modern world. At The Nest, we intentionally slow things down. We create a rhythm and an environment that gives children the time, space and freedom to be children.
That means time to play. Time to get messy, to wonder, to take risks, to solve problems, and to explore. Children at The Nest get to touch grass, dig in dirt, splash in water, and follow their curiosity with their whole bodies. We also support them in building the foundations of independence, helping them develop the skills and confidence to care for themselves and engage with the world around them.
We offer a safe space for making mistakes, understanding their big emotions, asking questions and figuring things out. Because that’s what childhood should be—a time of discovery, joy, and deep connection. Our mission is to protect the magic of early childhood and create a space where children are truly seen, supported and allowed to grow into exactly who they are.
Q: MANY PEOPLE ARE FAMILIAR WITH MONTESSORI—HOW DOES THE REGGIO EMILIA APPROACH DIFFER?
A: Montessori and Reggio Emilia have a lot in common—they view children as capable, curious and full of potential. They both honor each child’s developmental path and interests. But the way they go about it is a bit different.
Montessori classrooms tend to use a specific set of materials designed by Maria Montessori that are often self-correcting and meant to be used in particular ways to build specific skills. Reggio Emilia leans into open-ended exploration. Instead of prescribed materials, we offer loose parts, natural objects, open-ended art supplies and even light and shadow. The things that spark curiosity and invite children to investigate, create and express themselves in their own unique ways. It’s less about mastering a task and more about wondering, exploring and discovering together.
Q: YOU MENTIONED THE RIE PHILOSOPHY— TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS IN PRACTICE.
A: The RIE philosophy (Resources for Infant Educarers) is a big part of what guides us in our Lower School, especially in our infant, toddler, and twos classrooms. At its core, RIE is about respect and connection. We see every caregiving moment—feeding, diapering, preparing for sleep—not just as a task but as an opportunity to connect, build trust and show each child that they are seen and valued.
As children grow, we continue to honor that same deep, respectful way of being—it evolves into what we call Emotionally Responsive Teaching. This means validating children’s feelings and helping them name and navigate their emotions as they come up. We focus on creating a sense of safety and belonging while holding clear, consistent boundaries. That combination—emotional warmth alongside structure—helps children feel secure. They know they’re cared for and they also know what to expect. That’s what builds trust, resilience and real confidence.
Q: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING YOUR TEACHERS BRING TO THE CLASSROOM?
A: We’re incredibly excited to have four teachers from our Hamden and Branford locations join us in Fairfield. Meghan Murray will run our Fairfield location. She is a local mom with a Master’s in Early Childhood Education. She has spent over two decades teaching in Montessori and Reggio classrooms. We know that credentials are just one part of the picture. Teaching young children is truly a calling and the most meaningful job in the world. We invest in our teachers because they’re the heart of everything we do.
Q: WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE FOR CHILDREN GRADUATING FROM YOUR KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM?
A: When children graduate from our pre-k or kindergarten program, I want them to leave with more than just academic school readiness. I want them to leave knowing who they are and feel proud.
We focus more on helping them hold onto their “spark” as curious learners and problem solvers. We want them to be motivated to gather the information they are interested in exploring and dive into it both in groups and on their own. Our priority is not just that they are academically prepared for kindergarten; that’s the easy part, but also that they are socially and emotionally prepared.
Most importantly, they leave knowing they are enough, exactly as they are. They understand that their uniqueness is their strength and that success doesn’t come from fitting into a mold but staying true to themselves as they grow.

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.
Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error, they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.
Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.
The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.
It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.
Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

• 1/2 cup oatmeal
• 4 tablespoons honey
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
• 4 tablespoons buttermilk
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.
3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.
4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.
Enjoy!

THROW A PAWSOME BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR YOUR FURRY FRIEND
Create delightful DIY party favors for your dog guests by filling small bags or boxes with goodies. Include a tennis ball for playtime fun and a selection of treats for them to enjoy. You can also add a small toy or chew for variety. These favors ensure that every pup goes home happy and tired from all the play and treats.
Keep the human guests happy with a creative Treat Station for Owners. Use brand new, clean dog food bowls as serving dishes for snacks like chips, pretzels, and candies. Arrange the bowls on a table with a festive tablecloth and some dog-themed decorations. Label each bowl with fun names like “Puppy Chow” for trail mix or “Doggie Biscuits” for cookies.
A birthday party isn’t complete without a cake, even for dogs! To make a dog-friendly birthday cake, start with ingredients like peanut butter, bananas, and carrots. Mix 1 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of rolled oats, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and a pinch of cinnamon in one bowl. In another bowl, blend 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup of peanut butter, 1 mashed banana, and 1/2 cup of grated carrots. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, then pour the batter into a greased cake pan. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes. Let it cool, then frost with a mixture of Greek yogurt and peanut butter. Decorate with dog treats and serve to your excited pup!
