TIPS TO KEEP OUR STREETS SAFE FOR KIDS THIS SCHOOL YEAR

As Cy-Fair Independent School District students head back to class on Wednesday, August 13, families and drivers should stay vigilant—especially in school zones, residential neighborhoods, and areas where children may be walking. To keep our kids safe, remember these guidelines:

Put the phone down. Distracted driving is a concern not just in school zones, but in all residential areas— especially between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Slow down and stay alert. Many kids walk to and from school or a bus stop—and some routes may lack sidewalks or safe crossings.

Prepare your kids ahead of time. Walk school or bus stop routes in advance. Identify potential hazards like blind driveways and poorly lit paths. Equip children with reflective backpacks or clip-on lights if walking early in the morning.

Follow safe drop-off procedures. Wait until you are in the drop-off area for children to exit your vehicle. Never let them out across the street from a school entrance without an adult escort.

Fire and EMS crews are staying alert for safety concerns. If you see unsafe driving or pedestrian risks, please report them by calling 311.

ENGAGE, ENCOURAGE, Enrich

Combining Robust Academics with Lutheran Faith at Epiphany School

Epiphany school is preparing learners (from preschool through middle school) for life through opportunities of growth in a Christian environment. Read on to learn how they’re equipping the next generation to make a positive impact in the school and the community.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT EPIPHANY SCHOOL

Epiphany Lutheran School weaves robust academics with Lutheran faith formation for children eighteen months through eighth grade. Students follow a core curriculum that meets and often exceeds Texas standards, complemented by fine arts, athletics, technology integration, and purposeful service projects. The threefold brand promise (Engage, Encourage, Enrich) guides every classroom decision and campus experience.

SHARE HOW THINGS ARE SPECIFICALLY GEARED TOWARDS EACH AGE GROUP?

Preschool. In bright, play-based classrooms our preschoolers cultivate language, fine-motor, and budding numeracy skills through stories, manipulatives, music, and outdoor exploration. Bible stories and a weekly chapel lay a gentle spiritual foundation, while a six-to-one student-to-teacher ratio ensures abundant personal attention. Flexible scheduling options support working families.

Elementary. Kindergarten through fifth-grade students move into a workshop model for literacy, a conceptual math program that emphasizes deep understanding and problem solving, and inquiry-driven science and social-studies units. Specialists in art, physical education, technology, and music rotate through the schedule, and third and fourth graders begin instrumental music in the beginner band. Quarterly field trips connect classroom concepts to the wider Houston community.

Middle School. Sixth through eighth graders tackle a high-school preparatory course sequence that culminates in Algebra I credit, lab science, and research writing. A one-to-one device program and project-based learning elevates collaboration, critical thinking, and public speaking. Electives range from advanced band and choir to e-sports, worship team, yearbook, and student leadership council. Signature experiences include a three-day outdoor-education camp and an eighth-grade civics trip to Washington DC.

HOW DOES THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS WORK?

Admissions at Epiphany begins with a personal tour. Parents walk the halls with the principal or admissions director while their

Middle school musicians shine as they share their talents during the Spring Concert at Epiphany Lutheran Church School.

children sample a classroom activity or join recess. For preschool families, the process can finish the same morning: a short registration packet is signed before they leave the parking lot. Kindergarten - through - eighth - grade applicants receive an electronic enrollment link after their readiness visit, and most decisions follow within two weeks. Need-based aid is available for K-8 students, and the full tuition schedule lives on the school website.

WHAT IS EPIPHANY’S GOAL FOR THEIR STUDENTS?

The school’s mission is to nurture confident, compassionate disciples of Christ who think critically, collaborate effectively, and serve joyfully. Graduates leave academically prepared for honors high-school pathways and spiritually grounded to influence their communities for good.

WHAT SETS EPIPHANY APART FROM OTHERS LIKE IT?

Epiphany’s Engage, Encourage, Enrich vision shapes every lesson, activity, and communication, creating a cohesive experience from toddlerhood to early adolescence. Small class sizes, averaging ten students per teacher in K-8 and six per teacher in preschool, allow for genuine relationships and differentiated instruction. A single-campus model fosters continuity of culture and values, yet the program still offers big-school opportunities such as instrumental music beginning in grade three, a hands-on STEM maker space, competitive e-sports, and well-equipped science labs. Tuition is intentionally accessible, and more than a third of K-8 families receive assistance, broadening socioeconomic diversity. Finally, a culture of experiential learning, including regular field work, service projects, and travel, helps students connect faith and knowledge to real-world impact. epiphanylutheranschool.org

Meet the Heart Behind Livewell Animal Hospital; Blending Advanced Veterinary Care with Warmth and Compassion

When Dr. Brendan Kennedy opened Livewell Animal Hospital in Cypress, he had more than medical care in mind—he had a vision. One rooted in compassion, communication, and connection, not just with pets but with the people who love them.

“What inspires me most about Livewell Animal Hospital is the opportunity to improve the lives of both pets and their owners,” he explained. “Animals can’t speak for themselves, and being able to advocate for their health, comfort, and happiness is something I find incredibly meaningful.”

At Livewell, it’s this sense of purpose that sets the tone for everything—from the friendly front desk to the state-of-the-art exam rooms. The clinic prides itself on being more than just another veterinary office. It’s a community-centered space where pet owners are heard, informed, and supported through every stage of their animal’s life.

“I opened Livewell because I saw a need for a veterinary practice that goes beyond clinical care,” said Dr. Kennedy. “We have a great team that works collaboratively to deliver the highest standard of care while having fun. Livewell is meant to elevate what veterinary care should feel like for our community.”

That elevated care shows in their approach. Every pet is treated as an individual, with custom care plans tailored to their specific lifestyle, medical history, and needs. From wellness exams and dental cleanings to

urgent care and emergency surgeries, the Livewell team is equipped to handle a wide spectrum of services with both expertise and empathy. “One thing that sets us apart is our ability to see urgent and emergency appointments and perform emergency surgeries,” Dr. Kennedy added. “Pet emergencies are never planned, so we make it a priority to be available when families need us most.”

This responsiveness is a major reason why Livewell has already become a trusted name among Cypress pet owners. The clinic’s ability to handle emergencies while maintaining a warm, welcoming atmosphere gives families the peace of mind they need when the unexpected strikes. This responsiveness and care has earned the clinic a five-star Google rating as of the writing of this article. “Our goal is to build long-term, trusting relationships within the community,” said Dr. Kennedy. “We take the time to understand each pet’s needs and educate pet owners, so they feel confident in every decision.”

Dr. Brendan Kennedy

Behind the scenes, Livewell is just as committed to the people caring for your pets. The practice fosters a team culture built on collaboration, compassion, and continuous learning—ensuring that staff members feel supported and stay at the forefront of veterinary medicine. “We invest in the latest medical technology and training, but just as importantly, we invest in creating a supportive environment where our staff can thrive — because great care starts with a happy, engaged team,” Dr. Kennedy commented. “Ultimately, we treat every pet as if they were our own — and we think that genuine care shows in everything we do.”

Whether it’s a new puppy’s first visit, a senior cat’s wellness check, or a midnight emergency, Livewell’s promise is simple but powerful: to

help your pet live well. “We’re not just a veterinary clinic — we’re a trusted partner in your pet’s health and happiness,” Dr. Kennedy added. “Every pet that walks through our doors is treated like family.”

As Livewell Animal Hospital continues to grow, so does its dedication to the Cypress community. Dr. Kennedy and his team are proud to offer high-quality medicine with heart—and to be a dependable resource for local pet parents. “Our focus is on building lasting relationships. We take pride in delivering high-quality medicine with heart—combining modern diagnostics and treatment with a genuine commitment to kindness and communication,” added Dr. Kennedy. “Whether your pet needs a wellness check, urgent care, surgery, or end-of-life support, we’re here to guide you with compassion and clarity. We want you to feel confident that you’re doing what’s best for your pet — and that you’re never alone in the process. We’re so excited to be a part of the Cypress community, and we’re looking forward to serving you and your pets well.”

TURNING DISASTER PREPAREDNESS INTO HANDS-ON, HEART-FIRST MISSION TO EMPOWER KIDS

Ready, Set, Prep

When Michele Fortenberry first began teaching children about emergency preparedness in the late 1990s, she didn’t envision it would someday lead to a nonprofit serving hundreds of kids in the Houston area. But as the founder of Kid Prep, she now stands at the helm of a movement that’s empowering young learners to face life’s biggest uncertainties with confidence—and a custom-packed backpack.

The roots of Kid Prep trace back to Fort Lewis, Washington, where Fortenberry, an early childhood educator and military spouse, ran a family child care center. Living near the Juan de Fuca fault line, an area prone to earthquakes, made disaster planning a personal priority, and she brought that mindset into her classroom, including field trips to the local Red Cross and conducting hands-on activities designed to build practical skills.

“Preparedness wasn’t just an idea—it was a responsibility,” she recalled. “We created Evac Packs, tested supplies based on Red Cross recommendations, and taught children how to be ready for an evacuation. It became second nature to them, and they took real ownership of it.”

That ownership proved invaluable on July 3, 1999, when the 5.2-magnitude Satsop Earthquake rattled the region. While the children were at home with their families, the lessons they’d learned kicked in. “I received calls from parents amazed at how calm and confident their children were,” Fortenberry said. “They were leading their families through the emergency plan.”

Years later, after the 6.8 Nisqually Earthquake on February 28, 2001 and Hurricane Rita on September 24, 2005, Fortenberry revisited her mission with fresh eyes. In 2020, she launched Emu Blues, a children’s book about disaster preparedness. The initiative began with book sales benefiting hurricane recovery—but by 2023, the focus had shifted from response to readiness. The Book and a Bag campaign was born, pairing Evac Packs with educational materials and distributing them to 700 students across three schools. “It was at that moment I realized the need in the greater Houston area was far beyond what I could manage alone,” she said. “Kid Prep was born.”

Unlike many disaster-relief organizations, Kid Prep takes a proactive approach. The nonprofit specializes in engaging, interactive programs for children ages 3 to 12, using puppet shows, storytelling, and hands-on learning to teach preparedness in a way that’s fun and age-appropriate. “We offer a program, not just

a training,” Fortenberry explained. “Our goal is to ensure every child receives an Evac Pack and an educational book to reinforce learning. These books give children a safe and accessible way to explore difficult topics—like hurricanes or earthquakes—before they experience them in real life.”

The impact is already visible. Through Kid Prep’s efforts, hundreds of children now carry their own Evac Packs, complete with practical items they know how to use. According to Fortenberry, that knowledge builds resilience, not fear.

“Less fear and more confidence equals resilient kids,” she said. “Children are natural-born learners, and watching them apply what they’ve learned and share it with others is immeasurable.”

Looking ahead, Fortenberry’s goal is to provide 1,000 children with a book and a bag by the end of 2025. To reach that milestone, Kid Prep is rolling out a series of programs and events, including a summer camp, a children’s event, and several preparedness fairs in the fall. Each initiative is designed to make disaster readiness accessible, empowering, and even enjoyable.

“Our book for Houston, Emu Blues, introduces young readers to preparedness in a way that’s engaging and relatable,” she said. “It’s about turning uncertainty into understanding—and giving kids tools they can hold onto.”

And those tools go far beyond flashlights and snacks. Through Kid Prep’s unique blend of storytelling, play, and practical instruction, children are learning how to stay calm under pressure, support their families, and build confidence in moments that matter most. “As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our mission is to reach as many children as possible—especially during hurricane season,” Fortenberry emphasized. “Every child deserves the knowledge and resources to face emergencies with confidence.”

Community support is essential to making that happen. Whether it’s sponsoring a single child or an entire classroom, Fortenberry believes that anyone can help build a culture of preparedness—one that starts young, sticks for life, and could ultimately save lives. “You can help make a difference,” Fortenberry added. “Consider sponsoring an event, a classroom, or even just one child to ensure they receive the tools they need to be ready. No gift is too small or too big. Every contribution brings us closer to a future where preparedness saves lives.”

“Their trust speaks volumes about the level of care we provide. We truly care—about the pets, their people, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your furry (or not-sofurry) family members are in loving, capable hands.”

One of their most unique offerings is their wedding chauffeur service where they transport beloved pets to and from the ceremony so they can be part of their owners’ special day.

There are several factors which set Fur Loving K apart from others like it—notably they are bringing good energy and exceptional quality of service to pet owners. To Karly and her team, it’s more than just pet sitting—it’s a heartfelt commitment. “We genuinely bond with every animal in our care; they become part of our extended family,” Karly says. “We pride ourselves on bringing positive, loving energy to each visit, because we believe pets can feel that warmth. Our services are not only reliable and professional but also backed by full insurance and bonding.”

Good communication with clients is a top priority to Karly, allowing Fur Loving K to deliver outstanding customer service. This is reflected in their consistent #1 rank in local Google searches for pet sitting. “Clients frequently book us over a year in advance, and many share how they won’t even secure flights until they’ve confirmed availability with Fur Loving K.” Karly reflects. “Their trust speaks volumes about the level of care we provide. We truly care—about the pets, their people, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your furry (or not-so-furry) family members are in loving, capable hands.”

STORYBOOK CAPITAL of America

Visit Abilene & Your Favorite Characters from Children's Literature

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE BUTMAN

Abilene

Over the years, Abilene has undertaken a series of unique efforts to showcase the wonders of children’s literature. The city is home to the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, the Storybook Sculpture Project and the annual Children’s Art + Literacy Festival every June. To find all the Storybook Sculptures in downtown Abilene, download the Adventure Guide on their website.

Take one last chance for an end of summer road trip and take in the sites of your favorite childhood-books-come-to-life! When you first arrive at the Storybook Capital of the World be sure to grab their Adventure Guide and see how many of your favorites you can find!

In 2017, the Adamson-Spalding Storybook Garden was unveiled on the southeast lawn of the Abilene Convention Center with thousands of people in attendance, including the family of late artist Garth Williams. The Williams family authorized five sets of sculptures for the garden depicting some of Garth’s most iconic characters from best-selling books “Charlotte’s Web,” “Stuart Little,” and the popular Little Golden Book “Three Bedtime Stories.” From that book, sculptures were created of “The Three Little Pigs,” “The Three Little Kittens” and “The Three Bears.” Garth Williams was one of the most revered illustrators, and these works will be a permanent part of his legacy and Abilene’s cultural landscape.

New bronze pieces are added to the Storybook Sculpture Project by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council each year during the Children’s Art and Literacy Festival (CALF) based on the work of the artist on exhibit that summer at the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in downtown Abilene. The garden is always free to tour, open and lit at night, pet friendly and of course handicap accessible.

There are endless fun events and attractions; take in a theater show, visit the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, enjoy time at Spark at the Grace Museum (a hands-on exploratory space designed for all ages to enjoy) and Frontier Texas!, which brings together cutting-edge technology and history and lets visitors experience life on the early Texas frontier. Also, in addition to the annual festivals, Abilene Public Library story times, and the Art Walk , held the second Thursday of every month, by the Center for Contemporary Arts coordinates a mini arts festival with a different theme.

TREAT STATION FOR

OWNERS

Keep the human guests happy with a creative Treat Station for Owners. Use brand new, clean dog food bowls as serving dishes for snacks like chips, pretzels, and candies. Arrange the bowls on a table with a festive tablecloth and some dog-themed decorations. Label each bowl with fun names like “Puppy Chow” for trail mix or “Doggie Biscuits” for cookies.

HOW TO MAKE A DOG BIRTHDAY CAKE

A birthday party isn’t complete without a cake, even for dogs! To make a dog-friendly birthday cake, start with ingredients like peanut butter, bananas, and carrots. Mix 1 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of rolled oats, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and a pinch of cinnamon in one bowl. In another bowl, blend 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup of peanut butter, 1 mashed banana, and 1/2 cup of grated carrots. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, then pour the batter into a greased cake pan. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes. Let it cool, then frost with a mixture of Greek yogurt and peanut butter. Decorate with dog treats and serve to your excited pup!

The Wild Work of Corbin Maxey

INTERNET STAR, ANIMAL

Beneath a blazing Midwestern sun, an 8-foot pet alligator named Chompers, basks on a sandy beach next to her bridal bouquet. Loved ones took in the scene from afar as Chompers slipped into a pool flecked with floating rose petals. She wasn’t alone for long—Soni, her 500-pound alligator fiance, soon plodded off the beach and swam to her side. Standing on the beach was proud owner Corbin Maxey, a wildlife expert and YouTube personality with a lifelong mission of rescuing animals. “It was the wedding of the year,” Corbin says. “It just brought so many people online, invested in these two characters. And I just, it blows my mind.”

The Swampers’ marriage was YouTube’s first documented alligator wedding, complete with a wedding cake, monogrammed cookies and animal bridal guests. The celebration was a heartwarming milestone for two once neglected reptiles who faced harsh beginnings. Corbin rescued Soni 19 years ago when he was a young gator living in a teenager’s closet. He later rescued Chompers after she arrived at his home wrapped in a pillowcase and stuffed inside a shoebox. The two now live happily in a 1,000 square-foot habitat on Corbin’s animal reserve.

While the Swampers are Corbin’s most internet famous animal rescues, he now cares for more than 30 rescued exotic critters at his family home in Marsey, Idaho. He often documents his animal adventures on his YouTube channel which has garnered 5 million subscribers and 3 billion views. Most of Corbin’s episodes are zany personal encounters with his reptiles or revolve around Swampers romantic tales. Many, however, contain more serious undertones meant to teach his audience about conservation or little-known animal populations. “We try to keep them very lighthearted, but I love being able to share or feature animals that maybe

are misunderstood or maybe, let’s say in conservation status that people have no idea are declining,” he says. African lion populations are in decline and giraffes are experiencing a silent extinction, he added. “Everyone knows about elephants and rhinos, but no one knows that giraffes are actually declining at more of a rapid rate.”

Corbin began his own animal rescue efforts at a young age. He started his first non-profit animal rescue, Cyprus Hill Reptile Reserve, as a 12-year-old when he convinced his dad to accept an unwanted ball python named Reggie. Within a year, he’d amassed more than 60 animals in his parent’s spare bedroom including iguanas, turtles, a piranha and baby alligator. Once people in his small town learned he took in unwanted reptiles, the floodgates were open, Corbin says.

Corbin’s love for animals soon morphed into a drive to teach others about them. As a teenager, he volunteered his pets and time by giving free presentations to community groups. Then at age 14, Corbin’s mother submitted his name to a talent scout on the hunt for teens with unique skills. A week later he got a phone call which eventually earned him a place—and his animals—on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The gig was a natural fit for Corbin’s lively personality and charm with creatures.

“I love teaching people about animals,” Corbin says. “I always love making people laugh.” Corbin spent the next decade building a career as an animal expert on TV and in person. As an 18-year-old he became Boise Idaho’s youngest TV producer and show host with his segment “LIVE with the Reptile Guy.” He later launched his own animal segment on a local ABC affiliate showcasing sloths, porcupines and plenty of reptiles. By 2014, he had appeared on “The Today Show” over a dozen times, eventually becoming the most featured

live in-studio animal expert. It was a hard-won journey, but Corbin never gave up. Similarly, his YouTube channel gave him the chance to create personal content and be himself. He encourages young kids to do the same. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication,” he says. “But nothing’s impossible.”

Nowadays, Corbin regularly tours the country presenting animals to live audiences. This spring he made his first live Texas appearance at Bridgeland’s NatureFest. The event drew thousands of residents and children who cheered as Corbin showed off a boa constrictor, anteater and red tegu lizard.

Corbin is quick to remind his fans that connecting with nature doesn’t require a stage or even exotic creatures. Sometimes it’s as simple as walking out their back door. “One piece of advice. Get out there. Get out there in nature,” he says. “I know it might seem daunting for some people and some people might say, well, it’s easy for you to say…but you could just step outside. Go to a park. We’re really lucky in North America…there’s always going to be something in your backyard.”
