WE HAVE LIVED IN WESTLAKE VILLAGE SINCE 2004. As the years have passed, when it came down to easy access to performing arts and entertainment, we have found ourselves increasingly challenged by traffic on the 101. Anytime we wanted to go to Los Angeles for theater, music, museums, dining, sports or shopping, it was difficult. An evening of world-class jazz at the Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood often included an overnight stay at a nearby hotel. Ridiculous if you consider the fact that Hollywood is only 30 miles away. Not ridiculous if you want to enjoy yourself and avoid a two-hour crawl into Hollywood. Bottom line is that we do not go that often anymore. Unfortunately, I no longer get to see Tierney Sutton, Arturo Sandoval or other jazz artists I so very much enjoy. I don’t remember the last time I was at the Hollywood Bowl, the Music Center or the Pantages. Too bad, since I love musical theater, ballet and much of what those fine venues have to offer. Rather than continue complaining, it’s time to live and enjoy life locally. The Conejo Valley,

The brainchild of 5-Star Theatricals Director Will North, this epic event features Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Resident Companies 5-Star Theatricals, Pacific Festival Ballet and New West Symphony performing together on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. “All three companies have been the resident companies of the Civic Arts Plaza for 23 years and have never collaborated before. It’s a synergistic partnership,” says New West Symphony Executive Director Natalia Staneva. “This is the first time in the history of the Plaza and our organizations where live ballet, orchestra and musical theatre come together.” The vision for the show originated over a year ago when North took the helm at Cabrillo. "I was surprised the three companies had never worked together,” says North, who resolved to “work not only collaboratively but in a way that is symbiotic for all three companies, with relation to introducing ourselves to each other’s audience bases and building off of the talents and amazing professionalism and product we each bring to the table.” North collaborated with Staneva and Pacific Festival Ballet’s Kim Maselli to bring their vision to fruition. “We hope this is the beginning of many more to come,” adds North. 5-Star’s Dan Redfeld music directs and conducts the inaugural collaboration, featuring popular numbers from “Cats,” “South Pacific,” “The Sound of Music” and more. JOINING FORCES The Arts Council of the Conejo Valley, an umbrella organization for nonprofit cultural and art groups, has a history of successful partnerships in the community. It has joined forces and worked toward a common goal with three major partners—the City of Thousand Oaks, the Conejo Recreation and Park District and the Conejo Valley Unified School District. Membership in the council allows groups to rent rooms at the Hillcrest Center for a reduced price. It also assists members with marketing through a bimonthly Arts Scene newsletter, access to email blasts, and mention of their activities on the council’s website, ConejoArts.org. Additionally, “they are welcome to attend lectures and workshops to help grow and enhance their organizations,” Johnson says.

MUSIC & THEATRE The Arts Council’s predominant role in the community includes working with the Conejo Recreation and Park District’s Cultural Program to sponsor the Music in the Schools, as well as the All District Music Festival. “We hire the teachers and handle their payments,” Johnson explains. “We also sponsor the Young Artists Ensemble which allows youth to get professional instruction in stage performing via their many productions.”

THE GALLERIA The Arts Council also curates a number of shows for visual artists. For instance, “we curate five shows a year in the Galleria at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts,” Johnson says. “Everything from fabric, to oil, watercolor and mixed media appear so the artists can be seen, appreciated and hopefully sell.” In the spring, the annual May Open Show is designed for any visual artist, 18 years old and up, to show and sell their work. “We also give cash awards as determined by judges in each of the categories,” Johnson says. In January, the Arts Council sponsors the “Hang with the Best” art show, open to all students 6th through 12th grade. “Again, we offer cash prizes as determined by our judges,” says Johnson, further noting artwork is accepted through February 7. “I am always amazed at what the students can do. Some are truly talented and follow through on their art education.” In other local efforts, the Arts Council collaborates with UBS Financial Services to curate four shows a year at their offices. “I wish more companies in our area would also get involved with hosting art shows,” Johnson adds. “Clients enjoy the shows and the artists gain more recognition.”

CONEJO COTTONTAILS The Arts Council also collaborates with Art Trek in Conejo Public Art with its current project, Conejo Cottontails. These 5-foot-6-inch-tall fiberglass rabbits are painted by professional artists and purchased by local businesses and organizations and displayed for the public to enjoy. CONTINUED >

Why Cottontail Rabbits? In the 1800s, a Spanish governor granted 48,000 acres of land to two loyal soldiers—one who named his property Rancho El Conejo—thus becoming the basis of the Conejo Valley. Conejo means “rabbit” in Spanish, of which there are likely some tens of thousands living today throughout the valley. Conejo Cottontails can be viewed at The Shoppes in Westlake, Cancer Support Center in Thousand Oaks, CRPD’s various events, the Goebel Adult Community Center and Stonehaus at Westlake Inn. Additionally, a Touchdown Rabbit purchased by the Los Angeles Rams sits at the Promenade in Westlake. “Currently, an artist is working on one for the Westlake Golf Course,” Johnson says. “There is also a rabbit on the grounds of the Civic Arts Plaza which was donated to the city by the Brooks family in honor of their mother, who originally thought of this project before ill health brought it to a halt.” “We envision rabbits all over the Conejo and would like to see the Auto Mall, hotels and the Oaks get on board,” adds Johnson, further noting that the proceeds from this project pay for art classes for seniors and elementary schools.

LEGACY FUND In its latest endeavor, the Arts Council’s newest project is its Legacy Fund, which is strictly for scholarships for college-age visual and performing art students. “Encouraging the arts creates a vibrant, energetic, cultured community,” Johnson says. “It allows for the spirit of a person to be expressed in performance and visual art.” Currently, the Arts Council of the Conejo Valley has about 300 individuals supporting its work, along with 60 nonprofit organizations. “We need more so that the current programs and many more can be done,” Johnson says. “We want to sponsor workshops and lectures; to present more events spotlighting social and community issues. These all take money and person power.” Individual dues are $35 a year, and the groups’ fee is $60. “Of course, donations are always appreciated,” Johnson says.

JOIN THE BOARD The Arts Council is seeking additional board members; meetings are the second Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts. “Our present board is a hardworking group with each in charge of a specific project,” Johnson says. “I would hate to ignore a project because we have a lack of person power.” Above all, members of the Arts Council of the Conejo Valley love art—both visual and performing. “In fact, some of our board members are professional artists,” Johnson says. “As for me, I’ve been singing in Village Voices Chorale for 30 years and my husband for close to 40 years. Local Playwright Discovers Passion at a Later Stage in Life George Corbin

GEORGE CORBIN DIDN’T RETIRE WHEN HE RETIRED. He left State Farm in 2004 after working for 37 years in leadership positions, including Director of

Human

Resources.

But

the

Thousand Oaks resident isn’t the type to spend retirement parked in a Barcalounger glued to the TV set. He has always been active—traveling with his college sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Lien, and, until recently, staying in shape with tennis. Corbin, 74, has also been involved in community affairs for years, particularly in education. Credits include PTA president when his now-adult daughter attended Thousand Oaks High School, co-designer of the curriculum for Ventura County Leadership Academy and member of the California Lutheran University School of Business, Board of Counselors. So it was no surprise he went on to teach HR classes at Cal State Northridge and later CLU, where for 10 years he was an adjunct professor in the Business Department. Corbin only resigned because of health issues. What was unexpected was the left turn he took onto a path he’d never considered. “I had an idea for a story and thought it would work best as a play,” says Corbin, who had no previous background in drama or writing. “It was about a group of black fraternity brothers who, 30 years after graduating, are at a remote African resort where they’re threatened by dangerous ‘boy soldiers.’ It was never staged, but it started me on my journey as a playwright.” 34

Corbin, who is African-American and a native of Bermuda, graduated Penn State University in 1965 as a Psychology major. With no training as a writer, he realized he was out of his depth. “I enjoyed the process but didn’t know what I was doing,” he laughs. In 2010, Corbin enrolled in a playwriting workshop at the Robey Theatre Company in Los Angeles. The theatre is named for the great black actor, Paul Robeson. “The class was energizing,” says Corbin, who took three sessions, every Saturday, for over five years. “Students were creative and came from all backgrounds—from a PhD to a former gang member.” The workshop provided a place to explore concepts and to critique each others’ plays in a supportive way. “We also met with a dramaturge on a one-to-one basis, and at the end of a session, actors gave readings of our work.” The first play he tackled at the Robey was “Thunderclouds,” about the Cherokee Freedmen controversy. “After the Civil War, black slaves owned by the Cherokee and other Native Americans in the Southeast were emancipated and given tribal citizenship by the United States government,” says Corbin. “In the 1980s, the Cherokee Nation changed the rule, recognizing only those descendants of the Freedmen who proved to be Cherokee by blood. The case went to court.” The play wasn’t produced but did have a reading at Moments Playhouse in Los Angeles. A prolific author, he has written 15 short plays, nine performed at festivals, and seven fulllength plays, two of which have been professionally produced. And while not all of his works are based on historical events, such as his first produced play, “Sabado Mornings,” about finding love in middle age, Corbin likes to shine a light on obscure episodes in history. “These stories played a significant role in our country’s evolution, but few are aware of them,” he says. His most recent work, “The Daughters of the Kush,” was performed at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood this past October. Inspired by a true event, it is set in 1963 during the Civil Rights movement at a black sorority, Kappa Lambda Nu, also known as The Daughters of the Kush. A white, Jewish pledge ends up dead. The campus police must figure out if it was an accident or suicide. The idea for the story came to him from a newspaper article about the 2002 drowning deaths of two Cal State LA students in what was speculated to have been a hazing ritual while pledging a black sorority. The sisters closed ranks and didn’t willingly cooperate with the investigation. “Hazing isn’t new, the thing that triggered my interest was the detective’s comments,” says Corbin. “The detective looking into the incident for one of the student’s family, said, ‘I’ve had an easier time infiltrating street gangs than penetrating this organization.’” Like in the real-life incident, the sisters in the play decide to protect their sorority from scandal and lawsuits. The play isn’t just a whodunnit, says Corbin. There are deeper issues. “There’s the moral question about loyalty to your group, in this case, the tribal connection to the sorority, versus doing the right thing,” he says.

Another point to consider is how one powerful, influential individual can hijack the best of us and the best of an organization. “You need to keep a watchful eye and act if there’s a deviation from ethical behavior. But most people just go along to get along,” he says. “The choice sounds easy in the abstract but not in reality.” The play also brings up racial bias. “Here it is, over 50 years since I graduated from Penn State. If you had told me this was still going on, I wouldn’t have believed you,” he says, describing recent racist incidents on college campuses. CONTINUED >

In his play, it’s Clara, one of the black sorority sisters who is prejudiced against the white pledge for personal reasons. “It would’ve been too easy to set it up the other way around,” he explains. “The Daughters of the Kush” was developed at the Robey Theatre and then had a reading at the Towne Street Theatre in L.A. Its director, Veronica Thompson, is affiliated with Towne Street and had directed Corbin’s short play “Galveston,” about the immigration port known as the “Ellis Island of the West” during the turn of the last century. Mel Johnson of Moments Playhouse served as consultant, and Corbin took on the additional role of producer. “I learned a lot about mounting a play,” Corbin says. “I oversaw everything from the publicity to helping choose the cast.” At the advice of several people in the film industry, Corbin is turning “The Daughters of the Kush” into a screenplay. “I also have another play ready to go about the housing covenants in Los Angeles if someone can come up with the money,” he says. Corbin enjoys using his imagination, writing dialogue and connecting what seem like disparate elements into an interesting story. “I’m not a golfer,” he says. “Some people have a mid-life crisis and get a sports car. I’d rather be in a coffee shop with my laptop.” What he finds most gratifying is seeing his creation brought to life on stage and observing how directors and actors interpret his words and characters in ways he never thought of before. His family is proud of him and noted of

Bonds: Should I Stay or Do I Go?

THEIR PROMISE TO RAISE INTEREST RATES, THE OLD AXIOM “WHEN RATES RISE, BOND PRICES FALL” PUTS INVESTORS IN A PRECARIOUS SITUATION. The question, “Should I retain bonds in the portfolio or sell them because they’ll lose value?” has merit and highlights a reasonable concern that follows the right train of thought. However, while the world of investing fits many descriptions, it most certainly is never characterized as black or white. First, a quick reminder on what a bond is and how it works. A bond is essentially an investment whereby you loan money for

a specified period of time and earn interest for making that loan. Money is typically loaned to a government (i.e., the United States), a municipality (like the County of Los Angeles), or to a corporation (ranging from Amazon to Viacom). And, you, the investor, are paid interest each year for the loan you made. At maturity of the loan, you’re then repaid the Face Value of the bond. For a quick illustration, let’s say you buy a Face Value $100,000 bond issued by Amazon, with a 3% coupon (interest payment) that matures in 10 years. Amazon pays you $3,000 every year for the next 10 years, and in the 10th year they repay you the $100,000 you loaned them. But, what if interest rates go up to 4%? Now, if Amazon wants to borrow money, they pay new bond buyers 4% (or $4,000 yearly) on a $100,000 loan. You can see that if rates go up, and you own the 3%-paying bond and you want to sell the bond, investors will pay you less to buy that position because they can get a bond that pays 4%—why would they want yours only paying 3%? The challenge is that when you only consider the example above, you’ll likely be running from bonds in a rising rate environment. But, if you take other investment elements into consideration, you may evaluate your situation and find bonds can still be a complement to a successful investing strategy. Bonds provide diversification from stocks and real estate—think of “not keeping all your eggs in one basket” if you were to trip and fall. Meaning, if the stock market or real estate market were to decline in value, then you would have greater total portfolio safety by being diversified and owning different types of assets. Please note that diversification does not guarantee against a loss. In 1968, Mirisch branched out into charity events, producing a Celebrity Tennis Tournament for the former U.S. Open tennis champion Tony Trabert at Murrieta Hot Springs. That event kicked off thousands of celebrity fundraising events Mirisch produced throughout the United States and internationally. Mirisch’s long career includes many highlights, such as The City of Hope Victor Awards he assisted with for 28 years. The first nationally televised sports award show (Fox TV), the event was held at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel. “During those 28 years I brought over 500 of the world’s top athletes, managers and coaches to Las Vegas to be honored by The City of Hope,” says Mirisch, whose recently published autobiography, The Man with the Gold Rolodex: PR To The Stars, includes photos of the event and celebrity participants. The best part of the job, says Mirisch, is helping others. 48

Self-Love DO YOU SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE YOU ARE ALWAYS PUTTING YOUR-

SELF LAST ON YOUR OWN LIST? Well, I’m right there with you. There are some people who put themselves first in everything they do and only think of themselves first. Some may think this is selfish, while others see it as a form of self-love. In order to truly be happy, it is important to incorporate some form of self-love into our lives. However, some of us might not know how to love ourselves, how to receive love or even how to accept compliments. This is a great time of the year to learn how to not only love yourself, but also how to love and appreciate the important people in your life. I have many tips for you all to practice self-love while also showing your love and appreciation for others. You can start doing this by admiring others for their inner beauty and noticing their reactions. Also, make an effort to find out what others’ perceptions of giving are in regard to showing their love for others. You may find out that some people in your life really have a flair for it! The next step you can take is to find a mentor you admire and have them teach you something you want to get better at in life. Start your days by putting a zip in your step, as this could be the change you’ve been needing to make that will lead you to living your best life. In your everyday life, is your automatic response to things usually a positive loving one, or would you consider it negative criticism? If you start to voice your daily responses with compassionate feelings, you will definitely see positive changes in your relationships with those around you. Counting your blessings is another great place to start on the path to selflove. Do you have dreams and goals? Or, are you someone who always thinks that having dreams and goals are not worth it? Well, I am here today to say that your dreams and goals are very important, and you are so worth it. Chasing your own dreams and goals is a great form of showing self-love, as it will make you feel more accomplished once you start reaching for your dreams and goals. We all need to learn to be our own best friends and cheerleaders in life and know in our hearts that we are worth it. When we work with others from a heartfelt place, we not only gain our own power back, but we also take away any negative feelings that may be holding us back. Always remember to help others in life, especially when you start reaching your own personal goals. Don't forget to turn around and help the next person in line in your life. Always stay humble, be kind and be good to others. Most importantly, don’t forget to always love yourself. Happy Valentine’s Day!
