While we will celebrate the dads in our lives on Father’s Day, June 17, you don’t have to be a father to find something you’ll enjoy in these pages. Now that you’ve met the female movers and shakers of the community, we’ll introduce you to some influential men in this month’s feature. Learn about what makes them unique and how they’re impacting the community. If you haven’t already, you’ll probably run into one—or several—of them out on the town! Preparing for a night out with the guys? Consider one of TAG Restaurant Groups restaurants. We met with Chef Troy Guard and talked about his ten restaurants (insider scoop: a new Los Chingones will be

BOULDER-BASED JEWELER TODD REED HAS BEEN MAKING BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF JEWELRY FOR DECADES, BUT HE DOESN’T CONCERN HIMSELF TOO MUCH WITH FIGURING OUT THE THESIS OF HIS WORK. He enjoys making interesting and lovely things for people, and he’d prefer that be his calling card more than anything else. With a small team of jewelers and a strong relationship with the surrounding community of Boulder, Todd Reed jewelry has made a name for itself through

Forged as One Campaign. Each jeweler was given a signature stamp created to let customers know who was on the workbench and to highlight the exceptional work done by individuals. For Reed, it was as simple as giving credit where credit was due and introducing the world to the people he has entrusted his vision with. “It wasn’t clear to everybody that I wasn’t making the jewelry anymore,” says Reed. “I started thinking ‘well we really should show people that everybody that works here is an artist.’ The other jewelers were really making the art.” Reed acknowledges that part of the creative autonomy he and his team have is due to consistency in quality and customer experience. It’s a marriage that melds authentic expression, high-end customer service, and reliability in a way that is not terribly common among businesses.

“I think the hallmark of our company really is uniqueness, but there’s a certain reliability in that. It contradicts itself in a way and there’s a consistency there,” says Reed. “If you think consistency is what builds trust, then people can trust that we’re going to stay unique. It’s not a marketing plan; it’s just the way it is.” The uniqueness of Todd Reed is as prevalent in the jewelry itself as it is in the way in which Reed is personally averse to only producing best sellers. Making money is important, but he has spent his career occupied with creating a piece of body art that is special and unlike what traditional jewelers offer. “We really are unique, for good or for bad,” says Reed. “We’ll probably never be a big fish in a big pond and have something for everybody, but thank our lucky stars, we live in a place that supports us, and there are enough places around the world that support this uniqueness or special quality, whatever it might be.” The order will always be on time, the finished product will never be boring, and the customer experience will be unlike anything else a person might find while shopping for a piece of body art. For better or worse, this is Todd Reed jewelry. 24

TAG. BUBU. MISTER TUNA. GUARD AND GRACE. HASHTAG. FNG. LOS CHINGONES. If reading that list of hit Denver restaurants is exhausting, imagine what it must be like for Chef Troy Guard, the mastermind chef behind the TAG Restaurant Group. With at least ten restaurants and a new location of Los Chingones set to open in Colorado Mills in 2018, you’d expect Guard to be harried. Yet on a sunny spring evening in RiNo, while we sip margaritas seated at Los Chingones’ gorgeous rooftop bar, Chef Troy strolls around smiling, casually chatting with his staff and patrons. “He always has to make the rounds, kiss some babies,” laughs Beth Windle, manager of marketing and business development for TAG Restaurant Group. “He always wants to check in with everyone when he’s here.” Indeed, connection and community play a big role in Chef Troy’s restaurants, values that can be traced back to his Hawaiian upbringing. Many of his restaurants aim to be neighborhood hangouts, a place for regulars and newbies alike to connect—and enjoy some damn fine food while they’re at it. Even the award-winning Guard and Grace, Guard’s modern take on the swanky steakhouses of old, is bright and playful to invite guests to relax and socialize. Glancing around Los Chingones, we certainly couldn’t deny the coolness factor—the space is vibrant and colorful, and we were lucky to snag a seat from the crowd of young Denverites gathering on an otherwise ordinary Wednesday evening. Pressed for space, the restaurant recently expanded to open Los Lounge next door: a cozy bar that still manages to keep Los Chingones’ badass Mexican vibe. While his years of success in Asia and New York brilliantly influence Chef Troy's slew of Denver restaurants, one of his biggest inspirations comes from an even more personal place. After all, you only have to look at the TAG moniker: Chef Troy’s initials. His steakhouse Guard and Grace? Named for his daughter, Grace. Mister Tuna, a Hawaiian-inspired neighborhood hangout, is a throwback to his roots and named after his father, who earned the nickname manning their backyard grill. Other restaurants are nods to Guard’s brothers. “With Chef Troy, things come from the heart,” explains Windle. With so much soul poured into his restaurants, you could almost worry that Guard is bound to run out of inspiration. Don’t. “When people ask what’s next, I always say I’m open to opportunities,” Chef Troy smiles. “With our new location near Colorado Mills, I’m kind of looking around for where else we could go.” That’s good news for Denver—and anyone looking to connect over award-winning food, atmosphere, and most of all, plenty of heart.

OLD FASHIONED Kevin Mancini Co-Founder of Signet Jewelry

WHAT’S YOUR RECIPE FOR PUSHING INDUSTRY BOUNDARIES? There is no set recipe for pushing industry boundaries…only ingredients and a passion to make something unique and special. Growing up in an Italian family, I never saw my dad or grandma use a recipe when making Sunday gravy (sauce). It was all done by feel, taste and passion. This approach has stayed with me my entire life. The ingredients for pushing industry boundaries? You need to be comfortable with risk-taking to try new things. Drive is another core ingredient to push yourself to not accept status quo and challenge conventional practices and thinking. You need creativity to always put the customer first and think of ways to enhance their experience. And finally, you have to be passionate about what you do. Your customers and strategic partners should feel that positive energy in your brand and your actions.

To be honest, I’m not sure there is one—and, if there is, we haven’t found it. The hospitality industry demands flexibility and our family decided to embrace that. We don’t have it 100% dialed in, but rolling with the punches has its perks—whether that means the whole family treks down to Huckleberry for coffee & breakfast together, or we scrap dinner plans at home in favor of an early happy hour at Bar Fausto. Maybe there’ll be a time when home life separates from the businesses, but flowing smoothly together feels good, too.

WHAT'S YOUR RECIPE FOR CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF A BUILDING? We spend our lives interacting with architecture. We were born in buildings, and we live in them, we work in them, we are surrounded by the built environment constantly. But, how often do we observe buildings? That’s the recipe. I have an insane amount of patience and am very perceptive by nature. By spending time, hours, sometimes days with a building, I begin to see details, shapes, light, shadows and how people interact within and around the architecture. For me, it's this exercise that leads to capturing the essence of a building.

First and foremost, surround yourself with people smarter than you in hopes of limiting these situations in the first place! When they do arise, always take a breath and a step back before reacting. Typically your first reaction is not the most favorable. Gather all information, investigate and proceed with a clear head. Understand you have been here before and most likely will be here again—probably sooner than you'd like! Trust your gut...and your abilities...and turn pressure into a motivator. After the situation is resolved, a Manhattan is typically the proper recipe to relax.

If you keep it simple and feel good in what you're wearing, it'll show in the way you carry yourself. If the emphasis is on the fit and you're not chasing a trend, it'll be timeless in the end and will always hold up. Darin Combs - My recipe for timeless style includes sticking with the basics. WHY SO MANY HEAVY HITTERS IN TODAY'S BLUEGRASS REVOLUTION CALL THE FRONT RANGE HOME. WITH THE RUGGED LANDSCAPE OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOOTHILLS COMES AN UNPARALLELED EVOLUTION IN MUSIC. Bluegrass has swept through the hills and into the towns, echoing the twangs of banjos and mandolins alike. Colorado has guaranteed its place in the hearts of true bluegrass artists, including these three musicians who share with us how the front range has influenced the music they play today. 40

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | June 2018

Paul Hoffman, Greensky Bluegrass

ANDY HALL, THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS Lover of bluegrass, the environment and tattoos, Andy Hall has seen the evolution of bluegrass take flight right before his eyes. Hall has been a member of the Grammy winning band, The Infamous Stringdusters, since their formation in 2005 and plays the dobro. You could describe them as a bluegrass driven, psychedelic jam rock with Southern soul with an air of freedom that is found right here in the front range. “For some reason, there has always been a connection between the mountains and bluegrass music. I think people who seek authenticity gravitate toward both the outdoors and unpretentiousness real music. That makes the front range an active place for bluegrass and the weirdos that make it," says Hall. "There’s a feeling of freedom that comes from seeing those mountains every day, so here we are, gathered together in search of freedom and authentic experiences. It truly is a rich, diverse area for bluegrass and I’m surprised more people have noticed what’s happening out here musically.” PAUL HOFFMAN, GREENSKY BLUEGRASS Paul Hoffman is one of two singer/ songwriters and plays the mandolin in the band. Originally from Michigan, Hoffman moved to Colorado recently. Greensky Bluegrass is known as a progressive rock jam band with bluegrass instruments, and their music reflects acoustic bluegrass instrumentation and lyrical songs that lean heavily toward psychedelic rock. "The Colorado front range is an awesome music community. A lot of cities have seen a specific type of music blossom and become their own, like Seattle grunge, Detroit R&B, Atlanta hip-hop, etc. But Denver seems to be a wealth of success and popularity for all types," Hoffman says. "The progressive bluegrass movement might be bigger here than anywhere else, but we are all sort of from elsewhere, and all the other genres do so well in this city. It's truly a live music mecca.”

BACK STAGE

(CON TI N U ED)

THIS FREEDOM HAS BROUGHT SOME OF THE BEST PROGRESSIVE BLUEGRASS MUSICIANS IN THE WORLD TO LIVE IN THE FRONT RANGE OF COLORADO.

ANDY THORN, LEFTOVER SALMON Andy Thorn knew something clicked when he bought a banjo at a neighbor’s yard sale when he was twelve-yearsold. Thorn has been a fan of Leftover Salmon since he was in high school, never thinking that he would someday be a part of the band. But in 2010, Thorn joined the band with his banjo and continued his pursuit of bluegrass from a different point of view. “Growing up in North Carolina, traditional bluegrass was king. That being said, I love that I got to learn the roots of the music there with the old school pickers. But from the first time that I came out to Colorado to play, I sensed a freedom in the growing jam grass movement that wasn’t yet present down South. You could play however you felt without getting judged for being too flashy, or not playing it like ‘Earl [Scruggs].’ This freedom has brought some of the best progressive bluegrass musicians in the world to live in the front range of Colorado. I’ve been here since 2008 and watching the scene explode since then has really been something,” says Thorn. 42

CRAFTING A NEW NARRATIVE

ARTICLE RILEY COWING

CHERIE GOFF, A COLORADO NATIVE WITH A PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS AND A PROCLIVITY FOR MODERN ARCHITECTURE, IS MANAGING PARTNER AT HMH ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS. As a LEED Green Associate, she specializes in energy-efficient buildings with refined modern details. Goff believes that the root of any sustainable solution is not oversizing homes. Rather, smaller, well-designed homes are better for the environment and shape more comfortable spaces. She explains that since the 1950’s, single-family homes have become larger while the average size of the family living there has become smaller. A misconception is that “bigger is better,” which Goff feels is not the case.

“Most of the time larger dwellings don’t increase the livability or enjoyment of our homes.” Goff says, “In fact, I’d argue that they isolate us from our families and community.” 46

PRINCIPLES OF MODERN DESIGN

She notes some improvements have occurred with increases in home size, like kitchens. In the 1950’s they were small, closed off spaces designed for use by one person at a time. Today, they are open, centrally located and better reflect how families

Likewise, oversized homes often feature single-purpose rooms. Think craft rooms, home gyms and movie theaters. Routinely underused, Goff says these rooms separate us from each other

Goff feels that in the same way that smaller homes compel us to be conscious of clutter, they also encourage smart design.
