LIFESTYLE LETTER
Kids & Pets
This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they are the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, their curiosity, and their potential shape the world in ways we can’t fully measure.
As parents and caregivers, we put so much effort into nurturing their growth, teaching them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget that children also shape us—they bring joy, laughter, and meaning to our everyday lives.
But we also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.
At the core of both children and pets is a simple truth—they need us. Our care and attention shape who they become, and in turn, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our homes with joy and love.
Check out our Dog Perfect Cover Dog winner, Boone, and some of the fur-fect runners-up in this issue! We continue to celebrate our dogs with how to host a DIY Dog Birthday Party and giving Cheers To Bailey!
I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love.
Here’s to our future, our little ones, and the pets who make everything better!
As always, thank you for reading, and we'll see you around town!

What Every Seller Needs to Know in the Current Real Estate Market
Listings have surged and price reductions are rampant. It feels as if the market is in a downturn when in reality it’s getting back to normal. In the last several years we have had a shortage of homes for sale which spiked home values and through this process, we began to have expectations that it would last forever. The good news is that there is still a demand for homes in our area with the growth that will continue in North Texas.
So how do we pivot and navigate a balanced market? First and foremost, sellers need to be realistic about their home value. Buyers have choices and will not overpay. They also have many new construction options and will tend to lean toward a home that has not been lived in. Sellers are competing with builders that offer numerous incentives, including both financial and upgrade options. This is very enticing, especially when pre-owned homes are not move-in ready.
What does this mean if you have a pre-owned home? Staging is critical when you are competing with a model home. Align with a lender that offers a temporary rate buy down program. If you can’t repaint or update your home, know that offering a concession for a buyer to do so can help get you sold. We have a program where you can borrow money to make improvements and pay back at closing. This helps our clients win and get across the finish line.
The takeaway is this… make certain that you work with an experienced agent that has the tools, a healthy marketing budget, and customized strategy to attract buyers to your home. At The Lori Vaden West Group, this is our specialty. We are passionate about helping our sellers navigate the ever changing real estate climate and positioning them to succeed.
We take the guesswork out of real estate.

A HOLE-IN-ONE EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS!

GOLF CAMP
KIDS GOLF CAMP
A Hole-in-One Experience for Kids!
In an era dominated by fast-paced sports and digital distractions, golf may not seem like the obvious choice for young children. However, golf camps designed for kids ages 5 to 16 are
skill development, teamwork and individual progress.
These camps are usually broken down into age or skill-based groups so that instruction is tailored to each child’s level. Whether a 5-year-old is holding a golf club for the first time or
“AGE GROUPS ARE 5-16 AND ANY SKILL LEVEL” ~ COACH MATT
becoming increasingly popular across the country—and for good reason. These programs offer a structured, fun, and enriching experience that teaches not just the mechanics of the game, but also valuable life skills.
We were fortunate to spend some time with Golf Pro Matt Artrip during one of his camps for kids. Coach Matt (as his campers call him) is the Golf Pro at The Bridges Golf Club in Gunter, Texas, owned by Centurion American Development Group. Coach Matt educated us on the benefits these children gained while attending his golf camps.
WHAT IS A GOLF CAMP?
Golf camp is a specialized program that introduces young players to the fundamentals of golf while creating a positive and engaging atmosphere. Camps can run during summer or school breaks, and range in duration from a few days to several weeks. Many are held at local golf courses, country clubs or driving ranges, with a focus on
a 16-year-old is working toward joining a high school team, there’s a place for every young golfer. Coach Matt explains, “We work on basic golf grip, which clubs are used where, simple techniques to be able to hit and putt the golf ball, while having fun doing it.”
Artrip adds, “We have several safety rules with cones and how we hold our clubs if we aren’t hitting. I say, ‘Get your cane out,’ and the kids hold their clubs by the head with the grip touching the ground so we aren’t tempted to practice our swings.”
THE BENEFITS OF GOLF FOR KIDS
Golf may seem like a calm sport, but it provides numerous physical, mental and social benefits for kids.
1. Physical Fitness
Golf helps kids develop motor skills, hand-eye coordination, balance and flexibility. Walking the course, swinging clubs and carrying gear also promote cardiovascular health and muscle development.
2. Mental Focus
Unlike many team sports that emphasize quick reflexes and fast movement, golf teaches patience, concentration and strategic thinking. Kids learn to assess distances, choose the right club and make decisions independently—skills that translate well into academics and everyday life.
3. Character Building
Golf is known for its emphasis on etiquette and honesty. Players are responsible for keeping their own scores and following rules without constant oversight. This fosters integrity, sportsmanship and respect—values that are essential on and off the course.
4. Confidence and Achievement
As kids learn new techniques and see measurable progress in their skills, their confidence naturally grows. Golf is a sport where small victories, such as making a putt or hitting a clean drive, can make a big impact on self-esteem.
5. Social Skills
Golf camps are social environments where kids meet peers with similar interests. They learn to communicate, cooperate and even compete in a healthy way. Mixed-age groups often allow older participants to act as mentors, creating a sense of community.
WHAT KIDS LEARN AT GOLF CAMP
A well-structured golf camp covers a variety of topics to keep things fresh and exciting. Typical activities include:
• Swing fundamentals: Grip, posture, alignment and swing techniques.
“...SAFETY IS OUR #1 GOAL!” COACH MATT
• Putting and chipping: Short game instruction, often with fun mini-games and challenges.
• Course etiquette and rules: Understanding the do’s and don’ts on a golf course.
• Driving range practice: Safe and controlled long-game sessions.
• On-course play: For older or more advanced kids, supervised rounds help them put their skills into practice.
• Fitness and warm-up routines: Emphasizing the importance of stretching and injury prevention. Many camps also include themed days, skill contests and even mini-tournaments, complete with prizes and recognition ceremonies. This adds an element of excitement and accomplishment to the experience.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAMP
When selecting a golf camp for your child, consider the following:
• Instructor credentials: Look for programs led by certified PGA or LPGA professionals with experience teaching children.
• Group sizes: Smaller groups mean more personalized instruction.
• Facilities: Well-maintained courses and access to a range or putting green enhance the learning experience.
• Age/skill groupings: Camps that organize kids by ability ensure that each child is challenged appropriately.
CHILDREN’S HUNGER FUND BREAKS GROUND IN NORTH TEXAS
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CHILDREN’S HUNGER FUND
In 1991, a simple act of compassion unfolded in a Los Angeles garage. Dave and Lynn Phillips began distributing food to neighbors in need—an effort that would grow into a global movement known as Children’s Hunger Fund (CHF). Driven by a deep desire to bring hope to children and families suffering the effects of poverty, CHF has since reached across 30 countries and 18 U.S. states, delivering over 750 million meals and impacting more than 380 million children.
At the heart of this mission is a humble box: the Food Pak. These boxes, filled with non-perishable, nutritious food, are hand-delivered by trusted local church partners directly into the homes of families in need. More than just
DELIVERING HOPE
sustenance, each Food Pak carries dignity, builds trust, and opens the door for lasting transformation, both physically and spiritually.
In 2009, CHF opened its first Texas distribution center in San Antonio, and it expanded to Dallas-Fort Worth in 2016. Now, the organization is writing a bold new chapter. On May 2, 2025, Children’s Hunger Fund broke ground on an 85,000-square-foot facility in the Town of Prosper. Slated to open in 2026, this state-of-the-art center will allow CHF to distribute five million meals annually across North Texas and beyond.
The decision to build in North Texas was both strategic and compassionate. The region is home to more than one million children living in poverty, and neighboring states like Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Louisiana face similar challenges. CHF recognized that North Texas offered more than just need—it provided opportunity. With access to major highways and a central location near DFW International Airport, Prosper became the ideal hub for national and international distribution.
But this expansion goes far beyond logistics.
At the new facility, CHF will introduce a remarkable initiative: Poverty Encounter. First launched in Los Angeles in 2018, this award-winning, immersive exhibit brings the harsh realities of global poverty to life. Designed by Hollywood set designers, the experience takes visitors on a powerful, multi-sensory journey into the lives of children in places like Haiti, Guatemala, and Eastern Europe.
IN PROSPER WILL BECOME A CORNERSTONE FOR EDUCATION, EMPATHY, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.”
Each visit ends not only with understanding—but with action. Guests participate in hands-on volunteer activities, making a real and immediate difference. With nearly 70,000 visitors expected annually, Poverty Encounter in Prosper will become a cornerstone for education, empathy, and community engagement.
As construction continues, Children’s Hunger Fund is already calling on the Celina and broader North Texas communities to get involved—and there are many ways to do so.
FIRST, BY SERVING.
The new facility will feature a 10,000-square-foot volunteer center, welcoming over 35,000 volunteers annually. Here, individuals, families, churches, schools, and corporate teams will come together to assemble Food Paks and prepare essential supplies for distribution.
“IT PROVIDES HOPE—ONE FAMILY, ONE COMMUNITY, ONE FOOD PAK AT A TIME.”
SECOND, BY GIVING.
While CHF has invested significantly in bringing this vision to life, the journey is not yet complete. A capital campaign is underway to ensure the Prosper campus reaches its full potential. Every gift—large or small—helps bring hope to more children.
THIRD, BY PARTNERING.
The facility is designed to be more than a warehouse; it’s a gathering place. Churches, civic groups, educators, businesses, and community leaders will find space to meet, collaborate, and grow together, transforming shared values into real, lasting impact.
AND FINALLY, BY SPREADING THE WORD.
From social media to local events, every voice matters. As awareness grows, the collective response to the call for compassion becomes increasingly greater.
Though the new center won’t open until 2026, CHF’s mission in North Texas is already in full motion. Just south of Prosper, the current operation in Frisco is open for volunteers and community partners eager to get involved. As CHF lays the foundation for something bigger, it’s not just building a facility—it’s creating a movement.
From the streets of Celina to the far reaches of the world, Children’s Hunger Fund continues to deliver more than meals. It provides hope—one family, one community, one Food Pak at a time.

DOG PERFECT

BELOVED DUCK DOG OF THE TONEY FAMILY FROM DUDE PERFECT
Boone’s story began not with a plan, but with a twist of fate—and a well-timed girls’ trip.
Tyler Toney had always dreamed of having a duck dog, a loyal companion to join him on hunts. His wife, Bethany, had been asking for a third dog for some time, but the timing never seemed quite right. Ironically, it was while she was away that everything started to fall into place.
While she was on vacation, Tyler happened to run into Boone’s breeder, who mentioned they had a sixmonth-old Red Fox British Labrador showing great promise—not only as a skilled retriever, but as a calm, family-friendly companion. Intrigued, Tyler brought up the idea. The day his wife returned home, Boone came over for a trial visit to see how he would fit in with the family—and he never left.
Boone quickly proved to be the perfect addition. With his country-charming name, Boone Dock Toney, he embodied everything the family was looking for: strong and focused in the field, but gentle and easygoing at home. He’s become both an outstanding duck dog for Tyler and a beloved sidekick to their three boys, who take him on endless adventures around their home in Celina and out on the family ranch in Sadler.

“Boone Dock Toney, he embodied everything the family was looking for: strong and focused in the field, but gentle and easygoing at home.”
Boone even has a touch of celebrity—he appeared in Dude Perfect’s “Pets Stereotypes” video on YouTube, with his famous dad, Tyler Toney of Dude Perfect.
Though he’s laid-back most of the time, when it comes to retrieving, Boone flips a switch. He gives every hunt his all, impressing everyone with his drive and discipline. The family hopes to breed him in the future so that one day, each of their boys can have a “Boone” of their own.
Boone may have started as a spur-of-the-moment visit, but he quickly became a forever part of the family—a loyal, loving dog with a true heart for both the hunt and home. He is a Dog Perfect.

CELINA YOUNG LADIES OF INFLUENCE
Developing Leadership And Community Service
ARTICLE BY NIKI CARBAJAL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF DANA DRAPER
Celina Young Ladies of Influence is a leadership and service organization for female juniors and seniors in the Celina ISD community. An offshoot of Celina Ladies of Influence (CLOI) and under the umbrella of the Celina Chamber of Commerce, CYLOI was founded by lifelong Celina resident and businesswoman, Dana Draper of Fidelity National Title, to promote leadership and connect young women with service opportunities. Together with her daughter Rylee, CYLOI was established in 2024 and welcomed its first ten members for the 2024-2025 school year.
Membership is application-driven and open to all public, private, and homeschool families in the Celina ISD community. Potential members should be service-oriented and have a desire to improve the lives of those in the group and their surrounding community. The group is intended to be inclusive and respectful, focusing on service while providing dignity to those they serve, creating connectivity among members and the community, and strengthening communication and teamwork skills.
Overseen by Dana, student officers plan and lead monthly meetings, social gatherings, and volunteer events. In its inaugural year, the group volunteered at a variety of events including Oktoberfest in the Kinder Zone, as set-up and clean-up crew and check-in hosts for the Celina Ladies of Influence Style Show, with Fidelis Inter Se placing U.S. flags on the graves of our military heroes at Old Celina Cemetery in honor of Veteran’s Day, and at Settlers Ridge Care Center during Christmas with socks and blanket distribution and holiday singing.
Senior members of CYLOI are eligible to apply for scholarships through CLOI’s fundraising activities, namely its popular Style Show. For 2025 seniors, $6,000 was awarded through an application process and presented at the annual Celina Education Foundation Scholarship Night.
Dana plans to expand the program’s offerings to include a symposium in conjunction with other organizations, broadening the horizons of Celina’s young adults. Event calendar and CYLOI applications open in July and run through mid-September and can be found at CelinaChamber.org. For sponsorships and donations, contact Dana Draper at dana@shawvertitle.com.
CYLOI’s mission: To serve the community as we strive to make it better through the future generations. As young leaders, we strive to be a positive light in the Celina ISD communities by providing service to others, both now and in the future.
TEXAS AMPS & AXES SCHOOL OF MUSIC
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATELYN BRISCOE
Local Music School Opens Celina Campus
After hoping and praying for the next chapter of Texas Amps & Axes over the past five years, owners Jon and Iris Meneley’s prayers were answered in a homey, five-studio Celina campus that has been officially open since January. The new space is a warm welcome to residents at the neighborhood’s entrance. It nestles in between Domino's and The Pin Cushion, their door already dappled with tiny fingerprints from children passing by and peering in to see the magic that waits inside.
Iris said that opening a Celina campus was a big goal for them in 2024, with many ups and downs. She said that they initially overlooked the space, worried it would be too small, but gave it a second chance after their realtor suggested they reconsider. In September, they submitted the lease application and received a text from the owner just 20 minutes later.
“I was like, ‘Oh, no, here it goes,’” Iris said. “‘We're about to get shut down.”
To her surprise, the owner said he was in the area and asked if he could come and talk with them. Iris was prepared for the worst when Herman came into the Prosper location beaming.
“He was like, ‘I just wanted to come by and personally introduce myself and meet you guys,’” Iris said. “I'm so excited to see your application; my mom and sister play piano, and I just feel like the arts are so important. Music is so important…,[so] what do we need to do to make this happen?”
As the anticipation of another rejection rolled off their shoulders, Iris and Jon were ecstatic.
“He ended up being there at Prosper Campus talking with us for quite a while and learning about our history and everything,” Iris said. “He was so excited, and it was just like, ‘Okay, I think I think we finally found our home.’”
“[It] was great because it allowed us to go ahead and start
building a student base for this campus so that when
we were open, we were ready to rock,”
Iris said.
The Meneleys had been so dedicated to opening the Celina campus that they began earmarking teachers who would be willing to move to the Celina campus before even signing the lease.
“[It] was great because it allowed us to go ahead and start building a student base for this campus so that when we were open, we were ready to rock,” Iris said.
The preparation for the Celina campus moved quickly; the space was move-in ready by the first week of December, and their ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in January. While the process has been a whirlwind, Jon and Iris have only positive things to say about the journey and the way the new space has shaped up.
“It was very enjoyable watching it blossom into what it is right now, [in] contrast to what our other campus is, because the other campus does have a very unique vibe,” Jon said. “This one has its own unique identity, and we're happy with how it came out…It's minimalist but still expresses our love for music.”
One of the things Iris says she prides herself on in the new space—aside from the stunning treble clef light fixture that greets their guests—is the warmth and connection with the community.
“Kids will come up on their bikes and go stop for pizza, or they'll be walking from the neighborhood with their parents,” Iris said. “We have several families that live in the neighborhood, so it's really cool that they'll park their bikes out front and come in for their lesson.”
As they continue to bask in the excitement of opening the new location and prepare for the fall registration opening, Jon and Iris are also looking ahead to a significant upcoming anniversary for Texas Amps & Axes.
“It’s crazy, because now we're marching into our 10th year,” Iris said.
They are still working out the details of what their 10-year celebration will look like come January 2026, but in the meantime, they are brimming with joy at the chance to bring music to the community of Celina, right from their doorsteps.
Texas Amps and Axes’ Celina Campus is located at 695 N. Preston Road in Celina, or online at school.texasampsandaxes.com.
HONORED WITH 2025 STATE OF TEXAS LAW ENFORCEMENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
CELINA POLICE OFFICER DAN THOMAS
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CELINA POLICE DEPARTMENT
“We are incredibly proud of Officer Thomas and the positive impact he continues to make,” said Chief John Cullison, Celina Police Department. “This award is a testament to his unwavering dedication, integrity, and the difference one officer can make in the lives of many.”
The Celina Police Department recently announced that School Resource Officer Dan Thomas has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Public Service by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), recognizing his exceptional commitment to service, mentorship, and community engagement.
Officer Thomas joined the Celina Police Department in October 2015, initially serving as a patrol officer and a dedicated member of the Department’s Special Response Team. In August 2021, he transitioned to the School Resource Division, where he was assigned to Moore Middle School. Since then, Officer Thomas has become a trusted and impactful presence on campus, respected by faculty and cherished by students. "His approachable demeanor, consistent presence, and sincere investment in students' well-being have made him not only a protector but a mentor," said Sgt. Shane DiGeorge. “He has played a vital role in fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for everyone on campus.”
Officer Thomas actively builds meaningful connections with students by participating in lunch breaks, classroom activities, and school events. He is known for his calm approach to conflict resolution and his ability to guide students with empathy and patience, often resolving issues without the need for legal intervention. These daily actions have contributed significantly to a more peaceful school environment. Now at Celina High School, Officer Thomas says, “At either location, building lasting relationships, allowing the students to trust in their SRO/law enforcement officers, and helping lead the students in a positive lifestyle are the best parts of working in the schools.”
In addition to his daily duties, Officer Thomas goes above and beyond by organizing programs that foster a
stronger bond between law enforcement and the community. In July 2024, he led the planning and execution of the Junior Police Academy. This summer initiative educates middle school students on the fundamentals of law enforcement while building confidence through mentorship and team-building activities. Since its inception, the program has graduated over 100 students, with eight Basic Academies and one Advanced Academy completed.
His commitment to youth mentorship was also recognized in December 2024, when he received the Servpro First Responder Service Award for his outstanding leadership within the school and his dedication to serving the Celina community.
Through his exemplary service, Officer Thomas has not only made Moore Middle School a safer place but has strengthened the connection between law enforcement and the future leaders of our community.
“We are incredibly proud of Officer Thomas and the positive impact he continues to make,” said Chief John Cullison, Celina Police Department. “This award is a testament to his unwavering dedication, integrity, and the difference one officer can make in the lives of many.”
The Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award is presented annually by TCOLE to officers who demonstrate exceptional achievement in public service, professional excellence, and community engagement. Officer Thomas says, “Although it has been an extremely exciting experience to receive this award, I’m just your average guy doing what I can to reach the students. Anyone can do the same. I am very thankful for the opportunity to put these programs into play.”
Congratulations to Officer Dan Thomas on this award, and we appreciate his service to our community.
ALLERGIES IN PETS
ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT
We know allergies are miserable, but they are also unpleasant for your pets. Specifically, dogs and cats can suffer from allergies, which is one of the most common illnesses.
Drs. Josh and Blair Platt of Celina Veterinary Hospital in Celina maintain that allergies are the frequent reason for sick appointments. “We see itchy pets all year round,” according to Dr. Blair Platt, “No season is excluded.”
The symptoms of allergies in your pets include the obvious scratching, shaking heads, hair loss and the occasional watery eyes. The “Frito smell” (similar to the scent of the snack chip) on dogs can be an indicator of a yeast infection caused by allergies.
Drs Platt note that most of the time the allergy is environmental, like with humans. Pets can be allergic to mold and pollen year-round. Even indoor pets are exposed to allergens as people bring them into their homes. Conversely, cats are likely to suffer from food allergies.
How do you help your pet? First, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian - the earlier the better to avoid infections. Dr. Blair Platt mentions that they will check for infections, as pets, especially dogs, sometimes scratch excessively which can cause a skin infection. “We will treat with medicines when needed,

but may also use over-the-counter items like shampoos, mousses, and other items to give the pet relief,” says Blair. Antihistamines like Benadryl can sometimes provide relief, but temporary and natural remedies only mask ear infections from becoming more inflamed, thereby making them more painful for dogs.
In fact, allergies usually cause ear infections. Dr. Josh Platt says that this is in part because ear canals in dogs are shaped differently than those in humans, where water can build up in dogs’ ears. “It’s the perfect place for yeast and bacteria,” he notes. Daily ear rinses can help, but you may not be able to treat the problem or clean it thoroughly without veterinary medicine.
The primary source of allergies is fleas, affecting both cats and dogs. The Platts noted, “We first make sure pets are on
flea prevention medicine, even for cats, as fleas travel inside as well as on humans. We can easily control fleas.” They continue, “We highly recommend flea prevention all year because Texas doesn’t get cold enough to get rid of fleas. We still see fleas in winter!” Fleas are often present when a pet owner is unaware of them.
As previously highlighted in Celina Lifestyle, Celina Veterinary Hospital is a small animal general practice vet providing well care and sick care services with same-day appointments available. Let Celina Veterinary Hospital give your pets the allergy care they need.

WHISKING UP CONFIDENCE

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.
Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error, they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.
Why Cooking with Kids is More Than Just Making Meals
Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.
The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.
It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.
Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.
ANIMAL Crackers
Ingredients:
• 1 cup and 2 tablespoons white flour
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 cup oatmeal
• 4 tablespoons honey
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Steps:
• 4 tablespoons buttermilk
• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.
3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.
4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.
Enjoy!

OUTSTANDING STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Sponsored by Lamar National Bank
It is with great pleasure to announce the Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month as selected by the Celina Independent School District (CISD) Athletic Coaching Team. This month’s selection is Cameron Lucas.
Cameron is an incoming senior at Celina High School (CHS) and plays on the defensive line on the varsity football team. Cameron started playing football around the age of 5 with 380 Bengals. Along with the CHS Varsity Football team going undefeated and winning the state championship, he counts the jets flying over the stadium during the Gunter versus Celina game with both sides packed to the brim as one of his favorite memories. That was his first time as a Celina varsity player, and he entered the field with so much love and passion for football and the community.
Cameron has been recognized with the following honors for his efforts: Honorable Mention Sophomore Year 6A-D5 (2023, at previous school), Defensive Newcomer of the Year,
and First Team All State (2024). Of Head Coach Bill Elliott, Cameron says, “Coach Elliott has been a true inspiration. I’m so fortunate I had the opportunity to meet and have him as a coach on my journey. I’m grateful for the lessons he has taught me on and off the field.”
When he is not competing, Cameron works at Tender Smokehouse in Frisco, enjoys playing video games, and weightlifting. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After graduation, Cameron plans to attend college to study sports management and play football. He aspires to make a career out of professional football either as a player or business executive. Congratulations to Cameron Lucas and his selection as the August Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month!
SUMMER GRILL RECIPES
ARTICLE BY KATIE BOBROW
THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER
The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!
INGREDIENTS:
• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*
• 2 Tablespoons lime*
• 2 Tablespoons finely, chopped cilantro
• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil
• ¼ White onion, finely chopped
• 1 Tablespoon cumin
• Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag
2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.
3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.
4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.
SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK
5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.
6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).
7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.
*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.
CHIMICHURRI
INGREDIENTS:
• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped
• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
• 3 Cloves garlic, minced
• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 Teaspoon salt
• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.
ROASTED CORN SALSA
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 Ears sweet corn
• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes
• ¼ Cup lime juice
• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• ½ Cup white onion, chopped
• 2 Cloves garlic, minced
• Salt to taste
DIRECTIONS:
1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.
2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.
3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.
4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.

W A T C H THEM GROW
The days are long, but the years go fast. So they say with raising children. I have to agree with that sentiment. Each year as summer ends I find myself looking at my kids and reminding myself to “Watch them grow!” Both as a reminder to not miss the growth (with all the distractions and responsibilities that adult life brings) but also as reflection on how far they’ve come since the last time we turned the calendar page to August. Whether there are children in your life or not, I’m sure we can all agree that childhood is fleeting. Instead of stopping to smell the roses, I need to remind myself to “stop and watch them grow”—you can’t see it if you stare, but you’ll surely miss it if you blink! It helps me to set aside intentional time to be present with these fast little growers.
For us that looks like setting a special table to spend time sharing (or drawing) how we’ve seen them grow over the summer before jumping back into school routines. Making DIY game boards together and then having a family game night. Making snow cones for an after-dinner treat or, for a bigger wow factor, for breakfast! They will never forget that one, I promise. (Psst! my snow cones are made with fruit juice so it’s Mommy approved too!)
As August rolls in and the calendar tells us that it’s time for back-to-school shopping, the weather does not usually agree that the times are changing. I find that it’s such
a weird dance between what looks like the change of seasons when I open my calendar but not when I walk out my back door (heat wave!). On one hand, we’re still in full throttle of blazing temperatures in the Midwest and with no end in sight. At the same time, being thrown into back-to-school shopping, Meet-the-Teacher nights, resuming the regiment of packing school lunches, and if you’re a homeschool parent, all the to-do lists and lesson plans in order to launch into another school year. As we find ourselves
with one foot in summer and the other in a classroom, how do we embrace and (dare I say) celebrate this month? Instead of feeling ungrounded in the juxtaposition of August, I am inviting myself, and anyone who would join me, to embrace the opportunity to celebrate the in-between seasons that this month brings. My hope is that these ideas help spark your imagination on how to keep you cool in the heat, launch your kiddos into a new school year, and to set aside time to watch them grow.
DIY GAME BOARDS
Welcome more play into your life with this little DIY project. At our house we like to keep outdoor game boards around for short moments together as well as full blown game nights. These game boards are meant to be kept outside but could also be brought indoors as well.
Materials
• Pebbles for Checkers, 24 similar sized
• Small stones for Tic-Tac-Toe, 8 similar sized
• Acrylic paints (black, red, yellow and white)
• Paint brush
• Raw wooden boards + black paint marker
• Reclaimed wood + black acrylic paint
• Polycrylic spray
Instructions
1. Game Pieces: Paint your rocks with acrylic paint. For Tic-Tac-Toe you’ll need a total of 8 rocks, 4 of each type (here I’ve painted 4 lady bugs and 4 bumble bees). For Checkers you’ll need a total of 24 rocks, 12 of each color (here I’ve used black stones, painting half of them red).
2. Game Board: For raw wood (such as our TicTac-Toe board), use a ruler and black paint marker to create board lines. For reclaimed or treated wood, use paint. Let game pieces and game boards fully dry. Seal with a polycrylic spray for protection from heat and moisture.
SNOW CONES
We adore snow cones at our house! If you’ve been to our house then we’ve probably served them to you. A shaved ice machine makes it oh-so-easy! You can purchase premade snow cone syrup flavors or make your own healthier version by using fruit juice concentrates. Simply thaw the frozen fruit juice concentrate and put the liquid into squeezy bottles for an easy way to pour over shaved ice.
Assemble
• Ice, lots of ice!
• Snow Cone Machine
• Snow Cone Cups
• Snow Cone Straws
• Snow Cone Syrups (or frozen juice concentrates, thawed)
Use a snow cone machine to shave ice into snow cone cups. Top with your favorite flavor—either store bought snow cone syrups, homemade syrups, or our favorite—fruit concentrates. Stay cool and celebrate the last days of summer heat!
