ith the holiday season now fading into our book of memories, there is still much that I am thankful for. Expanding my family’s publishing business to the greater Cherry Creek area is certainly an honor and a privilege.

Yes, we hear you Cherry Hills Village, Country Club, Hilltop, Wash Park, Bonnie Brae, Belcaro, Crestmoor, Congress Park and Polo Grounds. That name would have been way too long for us. While your individual neighborhoods are unique, we know for many Cherry Creek is a common connector. In case you haven’t been paying attention, print is cool again. I would fear the hard facts of how much of my day is spent staring at some sort of digital device (which is why this issue is fully digital as well). With that said, there is something about coming home in the evening, or being on a plane, or at a coffee shop, and holding something tangible. We have an exciting year planned and it is our goal to serve as the community bulletin board. This is your magazine. As we continue to partner with more local businesses and organizations, our page count will also grow. I love my wonderful family, Chair #5 at Vail Mountain (cried when it went hi-speed), baseball, banjo music, black coffee and IPA’s. I also love connecting with people in this amazing community - so let’s hang out sometime.

DENVER RANKED IN TOP FIVE REAL ESTATE MARKETS

JANUARY IS NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH

The Denver real estate market has been hot the past couple years, and, according to a new report released by the Urban Land Institute, it will continue to sizzle. The emerging trends report ranked Denver in the top five real estate markets in the country for 2015, with only three markets – Houston, Austin and San Francisco – topping the mile high city. Investment, development and home building were the criteria considered for the rankings. Denver ranked 5th of the 75 markets surveyed for both investment and development and 4th for homebuilding.

Created in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us—individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits—can work together to increase the number of mentors to assure positive outcomes for our young people. NMM celebrates mentoring and the positive effect it can have on young lives. Its goals are to: • Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms. • Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young people. • Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their constituents in mentoring. Contact local groups like Denver Kids Inc. and Big Brothers Big Sisters to see how you can get involved around town.

MONTESSORI ACADEMY GETS A RENOVATION The Montessori Academy of Colorado (MAC), located at 2500 Curtis Street, Denver, 80205, is finished with Phase One of their two part, multi-million dollar renovation, and accepting 2015-16 applications for K-3rd grade. MAC is the only Montessori school in the downtown Denver area that enrolls children as young as 8 weeks through elementary. The school has successfully expanded from Early Childhood Education to include a unique-toDenver Elementary Program. The program boasts an innovatively blended educational model, combining Montessori with placebased education, using the whole of downtown Denver to enrich the curriculum in ways chosen by the children, all happening in a dual-language environment. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STEM STUDENTS AT DU The University of Denver’s intensified focus on science and technology makes perfect sense to Robby Robb, a DU alumnus and former engineer who was the founding chairman of the board of the Denver School of Science and Technology (DSST). This year, Robb and his wife, Barbara, did their part to help University of Denver students achieve success in the sciences: They donated almost $2 million to support scholarships for STEM students at DU. The gift gives special consideration to graduates of DSST, a network of charter schools within the Denver Public Schools system that focuses on science education and aims to prepare kids from all walks of life for college.

NEW CCHS SWIM CENTER MAKES A SPLASH Cherry Creek High School opened its new swim center in late 2014. It features a new 8-lane swimming pool, a diving well, spectator seating, locker rooms and offices. The $9.6 million renovation project added the new pools within the existing building footprint. The renovation also added new athletic lockers and a large public area connecting to the gymnasium and concession areas. The center, which was funded thanks to a 2012 bond issue approved by voters, can accommodate 361 spectators in the seating area.

Aspen Juice Serving Health By The Glass Article Emily O’Brien

J

uicing has been causing quite a stir lately. As I scroll through my social media feeds, I see pictures and recipes for all kinds of mouthwatering drinks. One will energize you while another one helps aid in digestion. Juice today seems so different than the kind I was raised on—the one with added sugar that had an expiration date of months down the road. Not All Juices Are Created Equal

Aspen Juice Co-founder Nhu Lam is passionate about juice, particularly green, raw juices. “It allows me to easily integrate clean nutrition in my life during the hustle and bustle of my day,” Lam says. “I love to toss a Kale in Comparison juice into my purse on my way out the door taking the kids to the bus stop. Once out the door, my day doesn’t always stop for me to have a simple breakfast. If I have a green juice in my purse, I’m less likely to indulge in that lemon loaf cake.” She goes on to explain that not all juices are created equal. Many of them are not truly raw or fresh and often are loaded with sugar. Aspen Juice, however, offers a healthy variety of blends from deep greens to reds. It’s refreshing to find a place serving green/superfood juices that don’t taste like you are ‘drinking your medicine.’ A place where the drinks are balanced and actually… somewhat addictive!

a healthy alternative for grab and go food and juice options when people don’t want to spend the time waiting in line at the restaurants or don’t want to eat at the local grocery store.” Know Where It Comes From

“Firstly, our juices are created through actual recipes; they are balanced and thoughtfully crafted by hand. The taste quality speaks for itself. Secondly, we produce cold pressed juice on our special hydraulic press in our commercial kitchen and then immediately bring the juice in after every batch. Customers don’t have to wait 15 minutes for their drink order while someone digs around in the back fridge only to find that something is out,” says Lam. If you find it difficult to get your daily servings of fruits and vegetables, then grabbing a juice may be right up your alley. You can get a boost of essential vitamins and minerals by the glass. To spice things up, try turning your juice into a cocktail! Aspen Juice’s latest favorite gives a touch of heat to the bland holiday winter. Spicy Sasa Lemon-Aide Martini

“Cherry Creek is an incredible location filled with the best of worlds for our locally started business,” Lam says. “It has tons of walking traffic, local homeowners, and professionals who need options. We’re proud to be a local company that provides 20

offee. Ahh... What is it about that wondrous word that has so much comfort wrapped around each letter? These days, many of us steer clear of the large coffee shops in favor of smaller, independently owned little gems. These baristas cannot only tell you the name the region and farm your beans came from, but also the person who roasted them. We all have our favorite style of coffee. Personal preferences, as we all know, can sometimes get a little out of hand. Every cup will taste different because of the bean, the grind, amount used, the temperature, and many other factors. For me, I like it pretty simple. I like a full fat latte plain, or sometimes with a raw sugar. One of the reasons a latte brightens my day, is the beautifully crafted design floating on top. Like many things in life, it all comes down to the experience. As a former Starbucks employee, I cannot say that I have much, if any knowledge about latte art. I can say, however, that I truly appreciate it. Have you ever looked down and wondered if your barista had a crush on you? Or a secret obsession for ferns? Or just way too much time? This is the world of Latte art. Baristas are creating these designs through free pouring and embellishing. Latte artist may be criticized for taking too much time to create these designs, but have also been known to be the best tasting. The perfect marriage between the quality and consistency of the espresso and the micro-foam is what separates it from your everyday latte. Easy? I think not. Here in Denver we have our fair share of organically gown, handpicked, handcrafted, roasted-on-the-premises, made to order, better than national chain coffee shops to choose from. 22

Amber Bath was born of White’s desire to find natural solutions for her kids’ sensitive skin. Today, products can be found at Whole Foods, local farmers’ markets and online. Though Lily received a Points of Light award from the George H.W. I knew about farm chemicals before it was cool to know about them and I didn’t want to use anything like that. I spent my entire childhood scheming how to get off that farm, and look at me now. I’m an organic farmer,” says Morgan. Morgan suggests her allergen-free Calming Moisture Cream with minimal ingredients or the Rejuvenating Seven Oil Treatment with its rich combination of oils of primrose, rosehip seed, lavender, avocado, almond, kukui and vitamin E, all readily absorbed by the skin. Conscious Cleansing for the Anti-cleanser Detox your mind, body, soul

Article Kate Manz

A

s a food lover, wine drinker, dark chocolate addict and coffee connoisseur, I would not categorize myself as a good “cleansing” candidate. Not to mention I don’t have much self-control when placed anywhere near a warm basket of French-fries. I have attempted several different types of cleansing methods in the past but for one reason or another I always wimp out. Whatever seems to be trending at the time, I give it a try but typically don’t last more than two days. Pathetic, I know. The biggest reason being, I’m a rebel at heart. When you tell me I can’t eat or drink something, that one thing is all I think about. Being a competitive person, the Conscious Cleanse was very attractive to me as you are cleansing with a group at the same time. It was something that pushed me to stick with it. When I first met Jo and Julie, founders of the Conscious Cleanse, I fell in love with both their stories. Through their own personal journeys as health coaches, and decades of studying yoga, personal development, and nutrition, they developed their program. Although they talk about food, weight loss and cleansing, what really lights them up is helping people to design and live their best lives. Their approach is more about mindfulness rather than depravation. The 14-day, whole food cleanse is more about listening to your body than a diet. Participants are challenged to view their food as medicine. Support through the team comes from daily inspirational emails, as well as a slue of delish recipes included in the back of their book. 28

I may have cheated once, (or twice) but the girls are quick to communicate that it’s about “being human,” not being perfect. I honestly felt amazing after the 14 days. My skin was clearer, I was a few pounds lighter, and most exciting was, my extremely high energy level. Something I need more of, having 3 young children. I will most definitely be a repeat cleanser.

Truth: We all have incredibly busy

and full lives. The Conscious Cleanse is about slowing down and making your health a priority over the course of the 14-day journey. You may think you’ll have to spend hours on end in the kitchen, but we’ve specifically designed the program for real people who have fulltime jobs and real-life commitments. Truth: The heart of the Conscious Cleanse is the idea that you begin to wake up to life, to how you’re feeing, to where you are going, unconscious in your habitual choices. Society is full of ideas for dealing with detox. More rest, more water, taking a hot Epsom salt bath or getting a massage can help your body speed up the detoxification process. After the initial detoxification phase, you will undoubtedly shock yourself with how much energy you have–without the use of any stimulants or caffeine. January 2015 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

Healthy Food for a Not-So-Healthy Eater at True C Food Kitchen Article Allyson Reedy | Photography David Fox

onfession: I’m not exactly the healthiest of eaters. Don’t get me wrong; I’d love to be the kind of person who happily snacks on carrot sticks or considers grapes dessert, but I’m just not. My favorite food groups are carbs and sweets, and although I do try to include veggies and lean proteins in my diet, I’m usually not happy about it. So you see why I was initially resistant to trying True Food Kitchen. If you’re not familiar, TFK is a healthy restaurant featuring a wide selection of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free menu items (and also plenty of choices for gluten-loving carnivores). It’s based on Dr. Andrew Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet, which includes a variety of vegetables, whole grains and fish. But instead of just focusing on healthy food, TFK focuses on making healthy food taste delicious. It’s the delicious part that brought me in. If you can make fish and quinoa taste as good as a burger and fries, sign me up. The restaurant occupies the corner of Second Avenue and Detroit Street, with an open kitchen, tall ceilings and large windows keeping the big space bright and airy. The menu is surprisingly accessible – I’d become accustomed to being bombarded with farm names and “it” grains at health-food restaurants, but TFK is different. With items like pizza, tacos and sandwiches, the menu is filled with familiar favorites, they are

just made with healthier ingredients to make the foods easier for our stomachs to digest. The Autumn Ingredient Salad ($12) was highly recommended by our server and, although I usually stay far, far away from salads, I was impressed. Made with brussels sprouts, squash, white beans and pomegranate, there was a lot more flavor and color than you find in a typical salad. Other starters, like the Edamame Dumplings ($9) and Shitake and Tofu Lettuce Cups ($9), are successful twists on Asian favorites. An avid omnivore, I didn’t miss the meat in any of the dishes. Entrees run the gamut from burgers to noodles to fish, with my favorite being the Grass Fed Bison Burger ($16) with umami, mushroom, watercress and parmesan. It isn’t just good for a healthy burger (OK, OK so it probably isn’t the healthiest choice on the menu), it’s one of the best burgers in town. Paired with a kale salad that made me forget French fries, this is my kind of health food. Also good was the Grilled Steelhead Salmon ($24) with smoked onion quinoa and cotija cheese. Fish and quinoa aren’t my typical ideas of a good time, but it worked well, thanks to the emphasis on spices and seasoning. There are plenty of vegetarian main course items too, like the Spaghetti Squash Casserole ($13) and TLT (tempeh, lettuce, tomato, $12). Nearly half of the menu is gluten free. Drinks, whether you go for alcoholic or virgin, are a lot of fun. Natural Refreshments (aka booze-free) are eclectic concoctions of fruits and spices. Try the Medicine Man (sea buckthorn, pomegranate, cranberry, black tea and soda, $6) for a boost of winter-time immunity or the Hangover RX (coconut water, pineapple, vanilla and OJ, $5) for rough mornings after. Cocktails are made with that same inventive spirit, with the zingy Ginger Margarita ($11) being a must-try. True Food Kitchen was not the self-righteous, Portlandia-esque restaurant I expected. A fun and lively spot where I can nosh on a great-tasting burger and sip a marg without feeling guilty? That’s my kind of healthy. January 2015 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

Kitchen Confidential A mid-century modern kitchen gets an inspired re-design

Article Allyson Reedy | Photography Emily Redfield

A

my Turner McPheeters had a head start when it came to restoring her home in the heart of old Cherry Creek back to its mid-century modern roots: she’s an architect. Her strong and focused vision continued into the kitchen, for which she turned to Exquisite Kitchen Design – known for its classic design with a modern twist – to give it style and functionality. EKD Designer Terri Rose worked closely with McPheeters to blend her vision into a workable kitchen design, all while maintaining that Denver mid-century modern feel. One of their challenges was to create more space for appliances and cabinetry within the existing blueprint. While many kitchen remodels involve tearing down walls, this one included filling them in. They filled in a partially open wall to the dining room to make room for the refrigerator and also lengthened and filled in the range wall, which had contained a partially open stair. 40

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | January 2015

With these new enclosures, the kitchen became a whole lot more functional. The team chose medium toned walnut, so popular during that time period, for the abundant cabinetry and spacious island. Honed Calcutta Gold marble countertops complement the warmth of the wood while Wolf Subzero stainless appliances bring 21st century convenience into the space. “The hardware selection was key to setting that mid-century vibe,” Rose says of one of their most unique finds – round, polished nickel, recessed pulls. “As simple as it sounds, my favorite part is the cool hardware and beauty of the walnut.” The finished product is a kitchen that is elegant, inviting and modern while staying true to its mid-century pedigree. Exactly what you’d expect from an accomplished architect working on her most personal project.

Maserati to Access Airbus Group Technology L

uxury automobile manufacturer Maserati recently signed a master agreement providing access to technologies from Airbus Group Innovations, the R&D hub of the Airbus Group – a leader in aeronautics, space and related services. Concluded at Maserati’s Modena headquarters, this agreement enables the company to make in-depth reviews of Airbus Group Innovations’ broad portfolio that covers manufacturing processes, production methods, metallic and composites expertise, systems integration and other know-how. “By evaluating this broad spectrum of technologies, Maserati can benefit from Airbus Group capabilities exploited in several applications, such as airliners, helicopters and fast jets to spacecraft that are exploring the universe,” says Harald Wester, chief executive officer of Maserati, and chief technology officer of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. “We developed the Technology Transfer Framework with industry leaders such as Maserati in mind, and it is being selectively offered to a limited number of potential partners,” explains Wulf Hoeflich, the head of Airbus Group Technology Licensing. “Maserati is perfect for an agreement of this type, as the company is a benchmark in high-end automobiles, while having production volume that is flexible enough to implement new technologies.” With the Technology Transfer Framework arrangement, overview access is to be provided to Maserati across a wide range of Airbus Group Innovations’ technical areas during a multi-year period, allowing the company to identify technologies that could be “game changers” when utilized under license and applied to its automobile product line. Cheers Interactive, the global partner of the Airbus Group Technology Licensing initiative, supported the cooperation between Maserati and Airbus Group Innovations. 42

Maserati is one of the most fascinating car production companies with a long history of appeal, tradition and sporting success. Alfieri Maserati founded it in Bologna on 1 December 1914. In 1926 Maserati was transformed from a workshop, modifying or developing the vehicles of other companies, into a company designing, building and selling its own. The Maserati brothers adopted the symbol of the Trident and made it the logo synthesizing the new company in a single image. Maserati has been part of the Fiat Group – now FCA – since 2005 and is a prestigious brand in the sector of sports and luxury saloon cars. It can be found in more than 70 countries, where it continues to bear witness to Italian sophistication, elegance and style around the world. 2014 is a very special year for Maserati as the company celebrates its Centennial. At the Geneva Auto Show a special concept car named after the founder of the company, the Alfieri, was presented to mark the anniversary and to introduce the main design features of new models to come. Airbus Group is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2013, the Group – comprising Airbus, Airbus Defense and Space and Airbus Helicopters – generated revenues of 57.6 billion and employed a workforce of around 138,000. Technology licensing within the Airbus Group is coordinated through its Corporate Technical Office’s New Technology Ventures function, and has the support of top company executives. Airbus Group Technology Licensing is part of the open innovation initiatives that look to expand the company’s technology scope beyond its core activities, establish new business opportunities and benchmark its capabilities.
