LIFESTYLE LETTER
February Local Love
February 2023 PUBLISHER
Jennifer Downs | jennifer.downs@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR S
Love comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of love in different ways, and we tend to appreciate expression that makes us feel something. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, and places in our area. As you read about a few local businesses in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local businesses right here in our community. Sincerely,

BUILDING A LUXURY HOME SHOULD BE A LUXURY EXPERIENCE Working with Legend Homes was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made! The decision to build from the ground up can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time and during a pandemic. The Legend team never missed a beat; they made the process so easy and fun with no delays. They are trustworthy, collaborative and their weekly communication updates through the app and throughout the process were superb. They were always available to answer questions and provide great advice even after we closed. We are so grateful for their team and our dream home. We would highly recommend Legend Homes to anyone considering building a new home in Middle TN. Amanda & Kevin

Brentwood Fire Station #5 Opens
Brentwood Police Wear New Body Cameras
How To Register Brentwood Businesses
Brentwood's fifth fire station facility opened at 9551 Split Log Road, completing an $8.6 million project in the city's fast-growing, southeast portion. The new two-bay, two-story fire station houses a single company, or a fire crew of three to four personnel, depending on staffing schedules. The building is approximately 10,000 square feet and includes a public restroom, water fountain and water bottle fill station for people using the nearby City trail system.
Brentwood Police implemented a new body camera system, and one of the cameras is shown here with Officer Cody Woods. Many officers, including Cody, say they are enthused about the new system and how it protects both officers and civilians. As police body-worn cameras have become more standard for departments across the county, the fiscal year 2023 budget provided funding ($300,000) to implement this technology for Brentwood Police.
Does everyone know businesses can be registered as a vendor with Brentwood? As the need arises for a particular product or service, city officials use this registry as one source of potential suppliers. However, city representatives state they cannot guarantee that a vendor will be notified of every solicitation for quotes, bids, or proposals for which it wishes to compete. Register as vendors online at: Procurement.OpenGov.com/signup.

When we began searching for an architect for HGTV Urban Oasis 2022, we wanted someone with fresh, modern ideas. We were introduced to Turner Binkley and couldn’t be more pleased with his work. Turner designed the home using a brilliant mix of modern elements and traditional style that perfectly celebrates the vibrant city of Nashville. The home is flooded with natural light from skylights throughout and features a studio-styled garage and deck for entertaining. Relaxation, Defined SQUEEZE BRINGS CONVENIENT, CUSTOMIZABLE MASSAGES TO BRENTWOOD
28
S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S
Relaxing, customizable “way better massage experiences" with high-tech convenience are now accessible right here in Brentwood at Squeeze, which just opened in November. Squeeze is the brainchild of Michael Landau & Alli Webb, the founders of beloved blowout destination Drybar and their former VP of Marketing, Brittany Driscoll. When Brittany mentioned she was on the hunt for a new challenge, the team says the stars aligned and thus,
Squeeze was born. In partnership with their award-winning architect Josh Heitler, Drybar creative director, Cam Webb, and chief operating officer, David Werner, the team has their sights set on disrupting another "outdated" industry. "We started Squeeze because we love making people feel good. And, we love massages (who doesn’t?). But, we found ourselves frustrated with the options out there: either mediocre discount establishments - which to their credit, made massage accessible to the masses or overpriced spas which make routine massages unattainable for most. Not to mention hard-to-book appointments, awkward checkout counters, and massages that were never the right pressure. So, we built the brand and massage experience we longed for," Brittany Driscoll, co-founder and CEO of Squeeze, explains.
Squeeze makes it easy for clients with its app-based booking platform. Guests can book appointments, add personalized details and preferences, and even pay, tip, rate, and review their experience -- all with just the touch of a button. "So, you can walk in and figuratively float out," says Brittany. Additionally, guests simply tap a “ready button” which lets the therapist know when to return to the treatment room to begin their customized massage experience, which comes in two time increments: the 50-minute "Mid Squeeze" and the 80-min "Main Squeeze". Inside the new 3,200-square-foot space's many treatment rooms, guests at Squeeze can truly choosetheir-own massage adventures - selecting one's preferred pressure, music (or lack thereof ), and lighting to set the perfect, serene scene for total relaxation.

"And at Squeeze, the extras don't cost extra!" continues Brittany. "Every massage includes the client's choice of deep tissue, heat therapy, percussion therapy, and aromatherapy at no additional charge." In addition to the new Brentwood location, Squeeze is now franchising nationwide with over 50 new locations in the works. "I always like to say that at the end of the day, we’re in the people industry, not in the service industry. I’m a people person at heart so the daily interactions I have with our team members, guests, and Operating Partners are truly my favorite. Whether you’re coming into work, getting a massage, or becoming an Operating Partner, our mission at Squeeze is to be the best part of everyone’s day and we are well on our way." Brittany is enthusiastic about their new venture and excited to mention the team is so excited to bring their new concept here to Brentwood. She adds "we're still hiring massage therapists to be a part of our world-class team, offering a long list of “pinch-me” perks including competitive compensation, health benefits, paid vacation, growth opportunities, flexible schedules, higher tips through the app, free monthly massages, a high-quality work environment, transparent feedback systems, and team-building offsite." To learn more about careers, booking, or franchising with Squeeze, visit squeezemassage.com.
Squeeze is located in the CityPark shopping center at 7011 Executive Center Drive. Stay in the loop with all things Squeeze by following them on social @squeeze.

Tennessee has come a long way from the days of prohibition to the booming beer, wine and spirits production that now takes place statewide. While still technically a dry state, Tennessee has earned a rightful place as a leader in the American liquor industry. In 2022, a local newcomer entered the spirits scene when longtime friends Michael Stainbrook and Michael Ward launched Franklin Distillery, a modern-day distillery crafting spirits reflective of the American South. “We always shared an interest in home brewing, and we’ve had this dream in the making for nearly a decade,” said co-founder Michael Ward. “We started exploring a homemade gin by using a few southern-grown botanicals in a neutral vodka in an attempt to craft something along the lines of gin.” With their flavor nailed down, the pair sought the help of a distiller to help bring their recipe to market, and now, Franklin Distillery’s Southern Gin and Southern Vodka can be found in stores, bars and restaurants across town. “Franklin Distillery has crafted approachable spirits that are in a class all their own,” Ward shared. “By identifying the aromas, flavors and botanicals first and then crafting spirits to celebrate them, we’re able to bring forth the comfortable and inviting essence of the South.” The 88-proof gin is made by distilling a unique blend of 14 botanicals, which include juniper, watermelon rind, pear, lime peel and more, brought to proof using pure Tennessee water filtered through limestone. In 2022 alone, the product collected a bevy of awards from the SIP Awards, Bartender Spirit Awards, ASCOT Awards and more. “It’s important for us to stay true to our essence and bring forth the flavors, aromas and aromatics of the region,” Ward added. “In keeping with our roots, the 14 botanicals that make our gin unique are sourced throughout the region.” Also on the market is Franklin Distillery’s award-winning Southern Vodka, a spirit that earns its Southern distinction thanks to its innovative use of Florida-grown citrus in lieu of potatoes or grains. While not flavored, gentle hints of citrus from oranges, lemons, limes or grapefruit may delight the senses while sipping. CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3

Cherry Liqueur .25 oz Simple Syrup 1 dash Orange Bitters Club Soda Garnish: Limes And Fresh Cherries
DIRECTIONS 1. Combine Franklin Distillery Southern Vodka, Luxardo Maraschino, simple syrup, and orange bitters into a martini shaker with ice. 2. Franklin Distillery’s vodka and gin can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, or are bright additions to any cocktail. Try the Southern Bee’s Knees, a honey-hued combination of Southern Gin, lemon juice, honey and sparkling wine, or mix the Southern Vodka in with your favorite Bloody Mary mix. The products are carried at a number of retailers across Middle Tennessee, just look for the red circle logo donning the coordinates 35° N 86° W. Wondering where this will lead you? The answer is the heart of Franklin, right in the town center. “Franklin has a historic downtown surrounded by rolling farmland and up-and-coming development,”

said Ward. “These coordinates are representative of both the heart and precision that go into Franklin Distillery spirits.” Growth is hopefully on the horizon for Franklin Distillery, as the pair dreams of opening a brick-andmortar distillery in Franklin. Plus, additional spirits including a rum and a bourbon may soon be in the lineup. “Our hope is that you’ll make our spirits, yours,” Stainbrook added. Luxury in Leiper’s Fork I N S I D E S O U T H A L L FA R M & I N N
Franklin’s next door neighbor has a brand new luxury destination: Southall Farm & Inn is now offering visitors a homestead experience in the heart of Leiper’s Fork. Set on a working farm dedicated to education and exploration, the Southall property sits on 325 acres of rolling Tennessee hills, with an abundance of pastoral experiences focused on sustainability, luxury and relaxation available onsite. “Southall today is also more than I could have imagined,” said founder Paul Mishkin. “It started out as a dream to create a place for people to stay and enjoy all the farm has to offer, and today, we’re welcoming guests to a truly immersive experience where remarkable design, earnest hospitality, and unparalleled farm, spa and culinary experiences combine.”
THE FARM The heart of the property is the Farm at Southall, where nearly all amenities, activities and experiences begin. A true working farm with more than 1,000 apple trees, traditional and hydroponic greenhouses, formal kitchen gardens and much more, the team has cultivated a space where a wide variety of ingredients come together to create a true farm-totable approach. Guests staying at Southall can experience extensive apiary, farm and jammery tours focused on immersive, hands-on educational sessions and demonstrations.
THE FOOD Southall’s culinary program is led by Executive Chef Andrew Klamar and Senior Vice President of Culinary and Agriculture Tyler Brown. Every dining experience at Southall is focused on ingredients grown, raised and foraged onsite. The all-day dining found at Sojourner serves homemade pastries and fresh-from-the-coop egg specialties—along with lunch and casual dinners. At Southall’s forthcoming signature restaurant, Mary Amelia, the rotating menu will change based on each day’s harvest.
THE INN & SPA No detail is left unfinished within The Inn, complete with 62 guest rooms and suites and 16 standalone cottages overlooking the property. For ultimate relaxation, each room includes an oversized soaking tub, with some even having their own fireplace. The Spa at Southall elevates the luxury experience through its 15,000 square-foot space, offering a full range of ancient healing therapies, modern treatments and products derived from The Farm.
THE ACTIVITIES In addition to tours and education offerings at The Farm, guests can also enjoy more than five miles of hiking/biking/running trails through old-growth forest; fishing, canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the

seven-acre Lake Mishkin, with rentals available including canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, fishing gear, mountain bikes and more. Nestled just a few miles from Music City, live music will also be a regular occurrence. While Southall is sure to attract travelers seeking to delight in the bucolic charm found in and around Franklin, it also offers an opportunity for locals to enjoy an immersive, relaxing experience close to home. In addition, Southall houses an onsite events center bookable for meetings, weddings and more. Safe, Welcoming Place For Children Most people have never heard of “removal day,” but in the world of foster care, it’s usually one of the most traumatic days of a child’s life. “When I heard that a child was removed, I always thought, ‘Well, that's a good thing’,” says Ronda Paulson from Elizabethton. “They're going to be safe. But, it's also the hardest day for them.” When she and her husband, Corey, who were college sweethearts, first became foster
parents in 2014, the experience truly opened their eyes to the reality of the situation. She says to imagine, as a child, going to school one morning and then that afternoon, as you are about to leave, being greeted by your principal, your guidance counselor, and a case worker and told you are not going home. Even though that child’s home life may be chaotic and unhealthy, that’s all he or she knows at that time. “All of a sudden you

don't know where mom is,” says Ronda. “You love mama; it doesn't matter what she’s done. You want to go to your home. It doesn't matter what the conditions are. You may have pets that you're wanting to see. All of your possessions are there. Oftentimes, most children enter foster care with nothing, truly nothing.” Their first foster child was a 9-month-old redheaded baby boy named Isaiah. Because their son, Mac, was 9 years old and daughter, Sophie, was 12, they didn’t have any baby items in the house. “He literally had an outfit that didn't fit and a roach-infested diaper bag,” she says. The more Ronda learned about the foster care system, the harder it became to not do more. The child welfare system, she says, is struggling. There are not enough foster parents or facilities, so when removed, these kids wait for placement in an office. Recalls Ronda, “I had a moment with God and I heard him say, ‘These are my children, what are you going to do?’ At first I told Him, no. I'm a cheer and dance coach; I have two children. But I felt like every step of the way, He was pursuing me.” Eventually, says Ronda, she just couldn't say no anymore. “We created Isaiah 117 House as a nonprofit in February of 2017, and we opened our very first home in June of 2018 in Elizabethton.” Today, there are 11 Isaiah 117 homes in operation in eight states, with another 13 in construction, and many more to come. So far, the nonprofit has served more than 3,000 children.
“They’re hungry, they're tired, they're confused and sad, and they're convinced that they've done something wrong,” she says. “What we do is we step in, and instead of waiting in a sterile office for hours, they come to a home with big, fluffy furniture. If they’re hungry, we've got a fully stocked kitchen. And if they want to take a bath, we've got bubble baths and Elmo bath toys. Anything they need, we provide: new shoes, new shirts, new pants, new backpacks, new pillows, new blankets, new stuffed animals. Everything is new.” Pre-COVID, a child's stay was anywhere from eight to 12 hours; now, it’s closer to 48. The number of children in a home varies depending on needs and the ages and sex of the children. “We want to keep our ministry focus very personal, very intimate, so usually our homes only have about five or six children at a time. Our goal is to reduce trauma for these children. We set out to lavish love on them on their hardest day because we've learned that with the way the brain processes trauma, no one ever forgets removal day. And so, we want to step in with God's love and grace and reminders that they are loved, and truly set them up for a different trajectory as they enter the foster care system.” Isaiah 117 does not receive any state funding. “I believe that this was never the state's mission or calling, and so all of our money comes from private foundations, churches and individuals,” says Ronda.
“Anything they need, we provide: new

Monetary gifts and clothing are always needed. On its website, people can choose a specific location where they would like their money or donations to go. People also may volunteer their time. “I’m just blown away by all the ways I’ve seen God mobilize His people. We learn about coming together to do what we're called to do, and that's what I see in community after community. I see God's people stepping out, giving of what they have. It's just been a beautiful picture of what can happen when God's people join together,” Ronda says. Today, Ronda and Corey’s family has grown. Instead of two children, there are four. “We adopted Isaiah, who is now 7 ½, and then we adopted his full-sibling brother as well. Eli, who was 3 weeks when he came to us, is five and the baby of the family. We also have a dog named Millie and a cat named Figaro. It just feels like this was the family we were always supposed to have.” info@Isaiah117house.com | 423.518.3760 | Isaiah117House.com

Lov in’ from the Oven at P uf f y Muf f in If home is where the heart is, Puffy Muffin has a heart of gold. Its founder, Lynda Stone, started with little more than an idea that her business was to welcome people as if they were home. And, that warm welcome started with rolls that “puffed up when she baked ‘em” as her daughter Kristi explains. That love from the oven of her mother’s kitchen served as quite the inspiration for Puffy Muffin established in 1986. Kristi recalls, “One of my sweetest childhood memories of my mom baking in the kitchen is first her sourdough bread which is how Puffy got started, then her molasses cookies. I can close my eyes and remember the sweet smell of the spices, and then the moment when I got to eat a warm cookie straight from the oven. It was hard to wait until it was cool.” But, Lynda’s love for baking rose to the occasion with family, friends, and beyond when she found her current home for Puffy Muffin on Franklin Road in 1992. Upon retirement,
Lynda knew she wanted to keep the business in the family since it was built upon love. So, from one generation to the next, Kristi continues Lynda’s legacy. From celebrating firsts and lasts to where business deals are made, or just an average Tuesday, customers feel the love in their favorite local bakery and restaurant. “Food is love. It's one way that I can show my family I love them. It's one way that I show my friends that I love them and enjoy them,” Kristi said on a recent episode of Tennessee Crossroads featuring Puffy Muffin. Kristi and her team start their day way before most folks have even rolled out of bed baking those trademarked rolls, and making everything else under the sun ready to greet diners each morning. The bakery counter boasts cookies, petit fours, cakes, and pies. At the grab-and-go counter, customers can snag a boxed salad, sandwich, or even cake-in-a-cup for the road. And, their

drink of choice? Ginger Tea – a concoction of fruit tea and ginger ale. But, make no mistake. This isn’t a fast food drive-thru situation. Given time, customers prefer to cozy up and make themselves at home within the full-service dining room serving specialties such as chicken salad, quiche, and grill favorites like burgers and reubens. Puffy Muffin also offers a full line of catering and bakery services that have garnered attention from the likes of Grand Ole Opry, and the Queen of Country Music – Dolly Parton. Try for yourself what Lynda found to be true more than 30 years ago by baking from Taste Imagination – a cookbook filled with nostalgic family favorites, along with some that became Puffy Muffin staples. Copies are for sale at Puffy Muffin ($29 each or two for $40) Featured in the book are those molasses cookies that Krisiti craved as a kid.

Brentwood’s steak and seafood restaurant, Mere Bulles, is no secret to Nashville diners, but their new lounge is a hidden gem. Tucked away inside the historic Maryland Manor restaurant with pops of azure blue and tan and a midcentury modern feel, the Magnolia Lounge offers an entirely new experience for those looking to get out for the evening - right here in Brentwood. The new lounge is located to the right of the entrance and host stand, just past the restaurant's bar. Guests can expect to pop in for small plates and boozy or non-alcoholic cocktails or step outside
to the newly renovated patio complete with fire pits, fans, and heaters that allow for dining in any weather. There's also a gorgeous magnolia mural prime for photo ops. Inside, The Magnolia Lounge will offer free snacks on Mondays through Thursdays from 4 to 6 pm and offer a selection of small bites for $8 each. "We are a locally owned and operated restaurant that has a heavy focus on our community, The Magnolia Lounge is a product of guests telling us they don't want to go downtown, and they want an elevated cocktail experience in their backyard. the complete patio remodel, and the creation of the Magnolia Lounge," says Mere Bulles Director of Operations, Brandon Styll. Mere Bulles, now located in the historic landmark Maryland Manor in Brentwood, began as a Southern restaurant in downtown Nashville in 1985 - long before Broadway's blaring bachelorette heyday and multi-level honky-tonk situation that Music City is now known best for. The original Mere Bulles in downtown was a jazz club and hot spot, located where B.B. Kings was before it shut down a couple of years back. The restaurant’s name translated to English means “mother bubbles” — named for the founder Rodney Wise’s wife, Shirley, who would watch grandchildren in exchange for a bottle of champagne. Steven Smithing bought the restaurant in 2007 after it moved from Nashville to Brentwood in 2001, but the restaurant business wasn’t new to the owner, who had worked in restaurants

since his teenage years, when he began as a dishwasher in Memphis. He moved on to waiting tables, bartending, and managing (including at Mere Bulles) before jumping into the Nashville dining scene as a restaurateur. Today, the Smithings own Mere Bulles and Green Hills Grille, with a hint of a third neighborhood spot in Nashville to be announced this year. With time and with neighborhood changes, the food at Mere Bulles has evolved over the years. The former downtown Southern restaurant and club now serves as one of Brentwood's only fine dining choices, in a stunning historic manor serving eclectic American seafood and steak. But Steven is focused on keeping the restaurant accessible to his community, and that includes the rollout of the Magnolia Lounge - an answer to the request of many guests over the years who don't want to make the drive downtown to have great drinks. Mere Bulles offers a wine list of over a hundred vintages, along with happy hour events and specialty cocktails, including the namesake Mother Bubbles, a sparkling white wine dressed up with lemon and strawberry puree. For whiskey aficionados, there’s also a special “top shelf” spirits collection offering dozens of their exclusive offerings to sample by the ounce. The large restaurant also serves as a very busy event space, hosting everything from holiday parties and bridal luncheons to rehearsal dinners and business events. merebulles.com

Education is key to successfully improving skin, asserts Adrienne Penning, MSN, FNPC, founder/owner of Stages Skin Studio in Brentwood. "We provide expert advice and state-of-the art treatments, along with the best home skincare regimens," she adds. “To me, Stages means family. When you walk through our doors, you can’t help but feel part of what we're creating with our boutique medical aesthetics and innovation-focused, wellness practice." Adrienne says she and her team of skin specialists get to know clients' skin goals through thorough consultations. "Safety is paramount at Stages." An in-depth medical history is taken, she says, and each person's skin is examined as part of custom-tailored plans, in addition to guidance on what to expect during treatments. "We believe you should feel at ease and pampered when caring for your skin," assures Emily Reinhart, a Stages licensed medical aesthetician. Stages' medical director Dr. Jian Wei says clients are sent home with all details needed for the best results possible. "You'll receive a printed and emailed copy of post-treatment home care. A client liaison follow ups after procedures to make sure patients are recovering well," she adds. Dr. Wei says a full range of services are available: customized facials, dermaplaning, medical weight management, hydrafacials,
chemical peels, customized skincare routines, microneedling/PRP treatments, laser hair removal, nonsurgical facelifts, injectables, feminine rejuvenation, intense pulsed light to treat pigmented and vascular lesions, as well as lash/brow options. Especially popular is Stages' Empower treatment, shares Adrienne, which involves a device with different modalities to assist women who are experiencing changes due to age, hormones, pregnancy, childbirth or menopause. With this device, she says they also treat common, post-pregnancy conditions. "We're proud to offer Williamson County’s first Empower Women’s Health Platform." Appointments may be booked online, by phone or text. Adrienne's philosophy is that skin health is multifaceted and thoughtfully created one step at a time. She began her nursing career at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as a critical care cardiac registered nurse, then graduated with her master’s degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University in 2012. She says she provided care in a variety of settings, including primary care, urgent care, medical spas, and concierge aesthetics, and her combined passion, education and expertise now fuels care at the studio. 615.483.1740 StagesSkinStudio.com

Thistle Farms: Love Heals
ARTICLE BY MYRA MCENTIRE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES WILLIAMS
VISIT THISTLE FARMS CAFE AND SHOP TO HELP SPREAD LOCAL LOVE
“Love is an experience; it’s a way to live in the world,” says Becca Stevens, founder and president of woman-led Thistle Farms. “It’s a universal concept, but it’s experienced locally,” she continues. “That's how the world will heal. Love in your community is the most powerful kind. It's not us taking on one another's trauma; it's us sitting with people as they heal from it. It becomes a joy, not a burden. At Thistle Farms … we laugh as much as we cry, we celebrate as much as we grieve.” Thistle Farms is a social justice enterprise that helps women overcome and heal from systems of prostitution and exploitation. Employing survivors, the cafe is

a restaurant, tea service, and event space. Items available for purchase in the attached shop include luxurious handmade textiles for the home, as well as jewelry, candles, essential oils, and more. All are handcrafted locally by survivors. Thistle Farms wants to extend an invitation to the local community to get involved by coming for a visit. “First, when we love somebody, we have to be concerned about their economic well-being," says Becca. "Buying our soap, eating at the café, lighting our candles - that economic impact makes the biggest difference. Sometimes people ask what they can do besides buy our products. Our products are like an evangelical tool. 70% of the items are bought for gifts, so people are buying them and then gifting them and sharing our story. The best thing people can do is eat at the café and bring three friends. That’s huge! “The second thing is that we have an open circle every Wednesday morning. It's the women in the program, volunteers, staff, and graduates who come back, but in the circle, we just practice love," Becca explains. "We light the candle, and do a check-in. There’s no ritual except for us hearing how people are doing. It’s a reflection, a reading, and that's it." “Thirdly, we are trying to build a Remnant Project which is a textile history of women who have survived sexual assault, gender-based violence, all of those things," Becca says. "You can't really photograph all the scars that women carry. Many of them are internal, so we're trying to depict what those scars are and then binding them together with powerful red borders and gold threads. We're inviting people to basically join a quilting circle. We have about 200 panels done already, and we're hoping for 1000. We need people! We have two residents coordinating that project, so we engage with women from the program. You're invited to either create your own square or work on someone else's.” Tasha Kennard, chief executive officer of Thistle Farms, says, “I remember when Becca started Thistle Farms 25 years ago. It was such a bold mission to help women who are surviving human trafficking, prostitution, and addiction and to do it with such a novel approach: creating acceptance, belonging, and opportunity. The café is really an invitation to the CONTINUED >

local community to come in and learn what Thistle Farms is about, but when you're here, you can feel that there's something different. It's a trauma-informed workplace, so we're not afraid of difficult conversations, we're not afraid of someone having a bad day, and we hold each other accountable to do the work that helps create more emotional stability and healing.” “I believe the practice is 9/10ths of love,” says Becca. “If I can practice love in my daily life, that is how people experience love. Love is about doggedness and wanting to bloom, getting practical, and getting into the way that you work, the way you live, and the way you speak. I'm not crying for people, but I'm willing to weep with people. The only kind of love that I'm interested in is loving people without judgment.” Readers can visit Thistle Farms online or in West Nashville. thistlefarms.org/ instagram.com/thistlefarms/?hl=en thistlefarms.org/pages/meditation-circle For information on the Remnant Project email contact Becca at thistlefarms.org

Dressed WELL-
Bonnie Kirby was inspired to start Well-Dressed Nashville in 2019 after she attended a pop-up closet sale at Parlour 3 hosted by Hunter Premo and several of her influencer friends. Bonnie’s initial idea was to have local pop-up sales with items from influencers' closets. A portion of the proceeds would raise funds for Tennessee’s Kids Belong, an organization that improves the experiences and outcomes for kids in the foster care system. She developed a business plan that very night. Shortly after Bonnie’s first successful local event, she faced some setbacks that could’ve ended it all. “First of all, Covid hit. I knew I had to pivot and put everything online. I had to learn how to make a website and put clothes online and shoot everything on a mannequin. That helped solidify that it really should be a national brand. And then, we lost our initial Instagram account, over 30k followers, and had to start over.” Well-Dressed Nashville rebranded as Well-Dressed, an authentic online resale from the closets of top influencers and celebrities.

Bonnie says, “The Well-Dressed buyer is usually somewhere in the 25 to 45 age range, and they are fashion-focused. It’s interesting; the demographic is split. Buyers are either really about the celebrity and influencer side of it and are shopping with us just because of that, or they don't care about the fact that sellers are celebrities or influencers. They’re there for the deals. We have really amazing brands at really great prices.” Previously a pediatric cancer nurse, Bonnie never expected to transition to a full-blown businesswoman. “I thrive on it. It’s fun for me to find the sellers and get the wins. It's fun to have our customers love the things they get, and every sale is different. I left nursing in January 2021. I couldn’t keep juggling being a mom to three kids and being a cancer nurse and trying to start a business. It was a hard decision. I loved that part of my life.” With the rebranding, Bonnie is taking the local love for Tennessee Kid’s Belong to their parent organization. “Now that we’re moving toward a more national brand, we’re expanding our charitable focus to America’s Kid’s Belong. I want to make an impact on people’s lives and make a difference. Foster care has become a big issue because of how much it affects the world and how much work is needed to improve it. Our followers really get to see the impact we make over a long period of time, and they’re really getting to know this organization and what they do. It was important for me to be familiar with them and to know they are doing great things with the money we raise.” Well-Dressed has monthly online ticketed events. TARYN PAPA ON FINDING LOVE
Taryn Papa, local country artist and 2020 contestant on The Voice, shares the heartwarming (and heartracing) story behind her romance and how it inspired her forthcoming EP.
CL: YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED THIS YEAR! TELL US HOW YOU MET YOUR FIANCE, BRETT.

TP: I’m a country artist, and when I’m in Nashville, I sing downtown on Broadway on the weekends. On a Monday or Tuesday night, about two years ago, a company bought out Redneck Riveria as part of an incentive trip for all their top producers. I was the entertainment on the second floor. I had three or four songs left, and this guy came downstairs. He’d been on the rooftop the whole time playing corn hole and doing guy stuff. I saw him, and I asked my guitar player to sing one for me. I ran off stage and walked right up to him and said “I'm supposed to know you.” I just felt a connection, like a magnet, to him. Later he said he’d been winking at me, but I was in a dark room, there’s no way that on stage I could see that, but he said every time I looked over he winked. Now here we are almost two years later! We get married in March 2023. I just felt it. It was crazy. We almost missed each other.
CL: YOU ALSO HAVE A FORTHCOMING EP. TELL US MORE.
“ I R A N O F F S TAG E A N D WA L K E D R I G H T U P T O HIM AND SAID ‘I’M SUPPOSED TO KNOW YO U .’ I J U S T F E LT A CONNECTION, LIKE A M AG N E T, T O H I M .”
TP: Yes! The whole project was inspired by meeting Brett and what it’s like to fall in love for the first time. I was on The Voice during 2020 during Covid - Team Blake - and this is the first independent project I’ve released since being on the show. We created the EP, and I co-wrote every song. Over the period of this past year, every six weeks or so we released one song as a single from the five song project. February 3rd is the final single release, and I’m so excited. It’s a duet with an artist named Zack Dyer called “No One's Gonna Love You” and it's a love song, of course. That will finish out the whole EP project for me. It's about finding my fiancé and it’s a play on words - no one’s gonna love you - like I do.
CL: BESIDES THE UPCOMING NUPTIALS, WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? TP: We just bought a house, I upgraded from my downtown Broadway apartment. I’ll also be doing a residency at the Westin Hotel on the 27th floor in their winter chalet-themed bar for the month of February. The whole thing will be decked out like a ski chalet. The schedule will be up on my website, and you can also find my touring schedule there.
CL: BEST WISHES TO YOU BOTH, TARYN AND BRETT! instagram.com/tarynpapa tarynpapa.com

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love.

A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
01
Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY
ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR
02
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

NEGATIVE SPACE
03
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION
04
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
05
The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
UPGR ADED HA NGERS 80
H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN
06
BAG & SHOE STOR AGE
Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for outof-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.

LIGHTING Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.
08 M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

PERFECT PAIR: VALENTINE’S DAY WINES Love is in the air! Whether planning a special Valentine’s Day date night or a get-together with your galentines, don’t forget to grab a bottle of wine to enjoy alongside the flowers and chocolates this year. But, with so many wine options on the market, selecting the perfect bottle can seem like a daunting task. The team at Brentwood’s Moon Wine & Spirits is ready to help. Here are their recommendations for the top wines to toast to love this Valentine’s Day.
Lu st Zi n fa ndel
Phifer Pavitt Date Night
$69.99
$99.99
Nicolas Idiart Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc $25
Turn up the heat with a bottle of Lust Zinfandel from Michael David Winery. Exuding aromas of chocolate-covered strawberry, Bing cherry and silky caramel, Lust may as well be Valentine’s Day in a bottle.
The fittingly named Date Night from Phifer Pavitt is an excellent Valentine’s Day choice thanks to its luxurious combination of flavors, including chocolate, silky tannins, berries, walnuts and more.
If you’d rather cool off with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, try the Sancerre from Nicolas Idiart. It displays a porcelain-like texture that carries notes of verbena, lemon curd, white peach and gooseberry.
