Little Hearts, Big Love

This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they are the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, their curiosity, and their potential shape the world in ways we can’t fully measure.

But we also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.

At the core of both children and pets is a simple truth—they need us. Our care and attention shape who they become, and in turn, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our homes with joy and love.

I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love.

Here’s to our future, our little ones, and the pets who make everything better. Cheers!

CROSSROADS

For the first time in over ten years, Museum of the Rockies will unveil a major new primary paleontology exhibition.

Cretaceous Crossroads will explore a time of transition in the Northern Rockies, when a vast seaway covered North America and new dinosaur species dominated the land. The exhibit is comprised of real fossil material, 3D prints, casts, reproductions, new paleoart, murals, AV interactives, an augmented reality piece, microscope stations, discovery drawers and more.

Visitors will see a mounted Maiasaura (Montana’s State Fossil) tending its nest, a 30-foot-long Daspletosaurus (a T. rex cousin), dinosaur egg clutches, Troodon (raptor-like dinosaur), a 23-foot long Mosasaurus, and many other specimens, some of which are only known from Montana.

BRIDGER VETERINARY SPECIALISTS

When Pets Need a Miracle

Emergency moments with pets are among the most stressful experiences a family can face. When time is critical and emotions are high, the team at Bridger Veterinary Specialists & Emergency (BVS) consistently rises to the occasion, offering expertise, communication, and compassion in equal measure.

Thomas and Luna on their ranch
“Thanks to the extraordinary care and dedication... we didn’t lose a cherished member of our family.”

Luna usually woke her owner, Thomas, at the same time every morning. But one day, she came in unusually early—circling him, clearly in distress. When Thomas looked closer, he realized her face was covered in about 30 porcupine quills.

Knowing BVS was open 24/7, he rushed her to the ER. “A really nice woman came to the door and got Luna in immediately,” he shared. She was sedated, and the vet explained how tricky it is to remove quills due to their fragile, barbed tips.

After a few hours of monitoring and a dose of antibiotics, Luna was ready to go home and was back to herself within a day.

One evening, Joyce and her husband heard their cat Sunrise gagging. When they tried to help, he ran away, and what they thought was a mouse tail dangled

from his mouth. Thinking he’d just caught a mouse, they let him be. But the next day, he couldn’t eat or drink without gagging. Their regular vet in Helena took x-rays and delivered shocking news: Sunrise had swallowed a sewing needle with thread still attached.

Their vet referred them to BVS for emergency surgery. “They couldn’t be more pleased with their services,” Joyce shared. The team at BVS removed the needle in just under an hour without any invasive cuts to Sunrise’s throat.

“They took Sunrise in on such short notice and we are so grateful,” Joyce said of the experience.

When Zazu was hit by a car chasing a deer, his family was devastated. After an initial assessment by their local vet, it was discovered he was developing Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

(DIC), a severe blood clotting disorder. Zazu was transferred immediately to BVS for advanced care.

“The staff swiftly took Zazu on a stretcher to begin urgent treatment,” said Zazu’s owner, Haley. “We were met at the front desk by an incredibly compassionate team who provided comfort during one of our family’s toughest days.”

Throughout the day, they received consistent updates from the team, including Dr. Dan Thomsen. “Calm and factual, he helped us understand what was happening without adding to our anxiety,” Haley said. Zazu responded to treatment remarkably well, and the very next morning, Dr. Thomsen shared the incredible news that Zazu could go home.

“When we visited him, it was like seeing a different dog compared to the one we saw the day before—full of life and spirit,” Haley said. “Thanks to the extraordinary care and dedication... we didn’t lose a cherished member of our family.”

Max had been William’s loyal companion for eight years; a quiet dog indoors, always nearby, and a ball of energy outside. One day, Max became very sick, his health declining rapidly. He was lethargic and refused to eat or drink. After a diagnosis of Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) at their regular vet, William was warned that things could worsen. By the following morning, Max’s urine had turned dark red. William rushed him to BVS.

With over 40 years of experience as an Internal Medicine physician, William was deeply impressed by the team’s level of care.

Top: Zazu resting while being treated at BVS
“We were met at the front desk by an incredibly compassionate team who provided comfort during one of our family’s toughest days.”

“His various docs at BVS called me twice a day,” he shared. “We discussed every procedure and therapeutic option, every lab result and clinical change.”

Max was treated in the ICU and needed intensive home care afterward. “I didn’t know if he’d make it through and I was worried that I’d put him through a week of misery... for nothing,” William admitted. But Max recovered, and two months later, he’s back to his old energetic self.

When Morgan noticed that Moose, his 13-yearold lab, was swollen all over, he immediately suspected a snake bite. He called BVS’s emergency number and was told to bring him in right away.

“When I got there, they were prepared to take Moose to the back immediately,” Morgan

recalls. Over the next 10+ hours, the staff treated the bite with antivenin to neutralize the toxic effects of the snake venom, and kept Morgan informed. “They reduced my anxiety by keeping me updated,” and they were honest about the risks without sugarcoating the situation.

“Moose is a 13-year-old lab who worked his whole life, so he earned his retirement,” Morgan shared. Thanks to BVS, he’s doing exactly that. These five stories are just a glimpse into the impact Bridger Veterinary Specialists has had on the Bozeman community. Whether it’s latenight emergencies, rare diagnoses, or unexpected injuries, BVS is where pets and their families find hope when it’s needed most.

A S S E SSING PETEMERGENCIES

As a pet owner, it can sometimes be hard to tell when your fur baby needs immediate attention, or if it’s safe to wait until regular veterinary office hours to bring them in for care. We talked to Bridger Veterinary Specialists & Emergency (BVS) to get their top tips for assessing potential emergency situations.

RATTLESNAKE BITES

What does a rattlesnake bite look like?

• Typically occur on the front limbs and face

• Characterized by 1 or 2 weeping puncture wounds

• Rapid pain and swelling

What should I do if my pet is bitten?

• Stay calm and contact your vet, even if your pet has been vaccinated.

• Remove collars, harnesses, or any items that may become constrictive as the affected area swells.

Do NOT:

• Administer any medication without veterinary approval

• Suck out the venom

• Apply tourniquets or ice packs

TOXIN INGESTION

What are some common household and outdoor items that might be toxic to my pet?

• THC or marijuana products

• Rat/gopher poison

• Human or veterinary medication

• Lillies

• Chocolate

• Grapes/raisins

• Playdough

• Xylitol (found in chewing gum and some peanut butters)

What are some of the potential signs that my pet has ingested a toxin?

Potential signs include but are not limited to:

• Hypersensitivity to light/sound

• Vomiting

• Unsteadiness

• Excessive panting, trembling, or flinching

• Leaking urine

• Lethargy and loss of appetite

• Seizures

These signs can happen immediately, or up to one to to days after ingestion

What should I do if my pet has ingested a toxin?

• Call your regular or emergency vet immediately, or pet poison control (Pet Poison Helpline: 855764-7661, ASPCA Poison: 888-426-4435).

• Save the packaging of what they ingested if possible, and bring it with you to your vet visit.

• Do NOT administer hydrogen peroxide without direction from a veterinary professional.

END-OF-LIFE CARE (EUTHANASIA)

What should I know about end-of-life care at BVS?

• The staff at BVS understands that it is a very difficult and personal decision for pet owners.

• There is a saying that “one day early is better than 1 day too late” when it comes to the well-being of the pet.

• Euthanasia is usually very peaceful when provided in a planned and controlled setting, rather than feeling rushed and urgent.

• If a pet owner is unable to be with their pet at the time of its passing for whatever reason, BVS veterinary professionals sit with the pet and talk to them as if they were their own.

• There is no pressure and no rush. Owners can spend as much or as little time as they would like with their animal before and after euthanasia takes place.

• BVS handles all aftercare arrangements.

• BVS provides a Pet Loss Support Group. Meetings are held at BVS on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:45pm. All are invited and there is no cost to attend.

TAKE A PAGE FROM CHILDREN’S LITERATURE FOR CLASSIC BIRTHDAY PARTY THEMES

let the WILD RUMPUS begin

ARTICLE BY CHERYL PARTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Whether seeking philosophical guidance or deciding what’s for dinner, recipes for life can be found in literature. We learn from great minds that came before us, and that’s true when planning a birthday party. Take a page from classical children’s books to find themes that combine playfulness, colorful illustration and words to inspire food, décor and games that will tickle the fancy of youthful guests, with a central activity of reading aloud. Published in 1963, “Where the Wild Things Are” is one of the most recognizable children’s picture books of all time. Writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak created a universal story about mastering fears. Dressed in his wolf costume, and sent to his room for creating havoc at home, young Max travels to an island of Wild Things where he becomes king. It’s a story about childhood resilience and mastery of fears, but simply observed, the fantastical book provides a colorful segue to an afternoon birthday romp in the park. When it comes to wild things, enjoy inspiration from our own party, plus we’ve compiled some ideas for ways to help the rumpus begin based on other beloved titles:

“Regardless of the theme, be sure to leave time to read a favorite passage from the central book of choice.”

“WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE” BY MAURICE SENDAK

As a costume party, have guests dress as their favorite wild thing. A crown-making activity allows everyone to be King (or Queen) for a day.

GAME: Wild Rumpus Dance Party. A twist on the Freeze Dance, guests dance and prance freely until the music stops. An extra step means that player is out. A winner is the last “beast” to stand still after multiple rounds of play.

“CURIOUS GEORGE” BY MARGRET AND H. A. REY

Gather a barrel of monkeys, plus your favorite Man in the Yellow Hat, for a party where guests can go bananas. George always seems to wander, so try a scavenger hunt that meanders from clue to clue. Banana cupcakes, banana bread, and a tower of bananas add a healthy touch to the dessert table.

GAME: Monkey in the Middle. Create a circle with one guest in the middle. Toss a ball, or soft monkey toy, across the circle without the monkey in the middle catching it.

“DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!” BY MO WILLEMS

Though an unlikely party host, pigeon—with his wide-eyed enthusiasm—sets a party tone. Eat “bird seed” trail mix and hot dogs (inspired by another Willems title, “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!”).  Printable images of Pigeon lend themselves to thematic and whimsical decorations.

GAME: Red Light, Green Light. With guests as “bus drivers,” they make their way to the station/finish line with a twist on this classic party game.

Regardless of the theme, be sure to leave time to read a favorite passage from the central book of choice. Give books as party favors or add a layer of philanthropy by having guests bring their favorite book to donate to a local nonprofit.

BIRTHDAY PARTY DIY DOG

THROW A PAWSOME BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR YOUR FURRY FRIEND

DIY PARTY FAVORS FOR DOGS

Create delightful DIY party favors for your dog guests by filling small bags or boxes with goodies. Include a tennis ball for playtime fun and a selection of treats for them to enjoy. You can also add a small toy or chew for variety. These favors ensure that every pup goes home happy and tired from all the play and treats.

TREAT STATION FOR OWNERS

Keep the human guests happy with a creative Treat Station for Owners. Use brand new, clean dog food bowls as serving dishes for snacks like chips, pretzels, and candies. Arrange the bowls on a table with a festive tablecloth and some dog-themed decorations. Label each bowl with fun names like “Puppy Chow” for trail mix or “Doggie Biscuits” for cookies.

HOW TO MAKE A DOG BIRTHDAY CAKE

A birthday party isn’t complete without a cake, even for dogs! To make a dog-friendly birthday cake, start with ingredients like peanut butter, bananas, and carrots. Mix 1 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of rolled oats, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and a pinch of cinnamon in one bowl. In another bowl, blend 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce, 1/4 cup of peanut butter, 1 mashed banana, and 1/2 cup of grated carrots. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, then pour the batter into a greased cake pan. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes. Let it cool, then frost with a mixture of Greek yogurt and peanut butter. Decorate with dog treats and serve to your excited pup!

Fun Tricks To Teach Your Puppy

A list of exciting new tricks to teach your puppy

We created a list of some fun tricks to teach your puppy! Whether you just welcomed a new furry friend into your home or you’re teaching an old dog new tricks, you and your pet are sure to have a fun time! Spending time playing and training with your pet makes for a great bonding experience! Don’t forget to reward them with some delicious dog treats when they successfully do a trick. My pup’s personal favorite treats are chicken, peanut butter, and carrots. We hope you and your pup have a great time learning the tricks on this list!

SPEAK

Get your dog to bark naturally (try ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door). Once they bark, say ‘speak’ and reward them.

STAY

Have your dog sit and then tell them to stay. Hold your hand out with your palm toward their nose in the stop position. If they hold the position for a second or two, praise them and reward them with a treat. Keep repeating this and gradually having them stay longer.

SHAKE

Hold your hand out in front of your dog. Your dog may do some experimenting trying to figure out what you want. Once they put their paw in your hand, immediately praise and reward them.

MOST COVETED

All natural dog treats by Montana Mutt that no dog can resist. No preservatives! They make everything by hand from scratch right in their store kitchen. Montana Mutt products are all natural, clean, and include only simple, healthy ingredients. They buy organic when they can and use local products as well.

Offering a variety of flavors, including pumpkin, blueberry, peanut butter, and more! These dog treats are extremely healthy and great for your dog’s immune system! Their treat bags contain 8 bone-shaped treats about 3” long.  Since Montana Mutt doesn’t use preservatives, the treats are hard and crunchy, with a long shelf life.
