Keeping It In The Family

In just about every aspect of our lives, we see that change is inevitable. The business world is no exception. Employers hope that the good ones stick around forever, but the reality is that people come and go through our lives. The best we can all do is try to create a healthy work environment and enjoy the time we have working with them.

We have had the absolute pleasure of working with Kailey Beuerlein for the last two years as our editorial director. Kailey recently was hired as an account executive at a production agency in Chicago and we know she is going to accomplish great things! As we prepared to fill Kailey’s role, we didn’t have to look far. We are thrilled to announce that Kelsey Huffer, who has been a key part of our creative team for the last eight years, has accepted the role of editorial & creative director. Not only is Kelsey an accomplished photographer, but she has an amazing eye for layouts and unique story ideas. Her kindness lights up the room and nothing has her frazzled, even when the publisher turns in these welcome letters so close to the deadline that there isn’t a minute to spare!

Kelsey was recently recognized at the City Lifestyle Annual Conference for the “Best Cover” award, out of 190 magazines in our company. While much of Kelsey’s work with us is behind the scenes, we want to make sure she is recognized for her incredible talent and professionalism. We couldn’t do it without her!

We hope you enjoy the work Kelsey and our team put into this beautiful, May issue.

Sincerely,

May 2024

A NEW SOUND

Transcending Traditional Genres and Mediums, No Signal is Making Waves in Colorado's Music Scene

MAKER’S STUDIO | ARTS + CULTURE

In 2013, Riley Schmelzer and his family experienced firsthand the tragic floods that swept the state of Colorado. Riley, just 11 years old at the time, stood in the stairwell of their basement, while his father swam to the rescue of the guitars in their family music room downstairs, handing them off to Riley one by one.

Riley had grown up in a musical household and played keys, drums and guitar until the age of seven when he picked up other hobbies. But in 2013, as his family’s music room soaked through, the desire returned.

“Of course, it was right then when I realized I wanted to keep playing music when there was nothing left,” Riley recounts. “Fortunately, my father had one prototype guitar upstairs that hadn't been opened or played before, and he allowed me to use it to start my journey. I just picked it all up again and enjoyed doing it, and it ended up turning into this project.”

The desire never left, and today the now 21-year-old Riley is responsible for the vocals, guitar and keys for No Signal, the band he has formed with Jake DeMarco (bass) and Nic Kubes (drums). Front Range fans may have caught them headlining venues like Lost Lake in Denver and The Fox Theatre in Boulder or over the airwaves on Colorado’s 93.3 “Locals Only” show and Colorado's 102.3 “Local 303.”

Having just released their sophomore full-length album, “Distorted Reality,” which has already garnered more than 2 million streams since its release in August 2023, No Signal is known for its conceptual, genre-blending sound. It’s “high-energy rock” as Riley puts it, but it’s experimental and maybe even a bit esoteric.

“There's a lot of conceptual things going on underneath the music, and I think that is one of the things that people first notice when they listen to No Signal,” explains Riley. “I don't want them to think that it's just a bunch of individual songs but rather a larger experience and the revelation that there's something bigger going on. Maybe it even makes them feel a little uneasy or like they're in some sort of liminal space. They pick up on this weirdness and that there's some sort of living, breathing entity behind it that's beyond me, Nic and Jake.”

To precisely dial in their sound, the band worked with multi-platinum producer Elan Morrison to enlist the expertise of Grammy-winning mixer Brian Vibberts, who has worked with the likes of Metallica, Billie Eilish, and Green Day as well as Grammy-winning mastering engineer Alex Psaroudakis and Grammywinning producer David Bottrill, whose credit list includes Muse and Tool, among other greats.

Despite an alreadyrich discography, No Signal is just getting started. This big-picture “project” Riley refers to is what he sees as a complex, overarching story that unfolds over decades for fans, told through multiple mediums: LPs, music videos, installations, shows and much more. Not long after Riley picked up music again this idea came to him:

“I have no idea [where it came from],” Riley says. “I was 14 when it all happened, and it just showed up, and from there, it was just a race to write it all down.”

“I was 14 when it all happened, and it just showed up, and from there, it was just a race to write it all down.”

Riley chronicled all the ideas and visions into a detailed, cohesive document. Since then, he’s only had to update bandmates on the plan, not the plan itself.

“I think all of these ideas existed for a long time. So the biggest thing that we had to get over as a band was me explaining it to Nic and Jake without scaring them. And quite frankly, I did scare them, probably, and overwhelm them. But they were all for it. They loved it,” Riley says. “I think it's because of that acceptance that we have been able to evolve and add onto this entity as a group of people who believe in it. It is quite wonderful because it can feel lonely at times, trying to do this brand-new thing that hasn't really been done before, but I have people on my side who will do anything they can to make it happen.”

For now, Riley reports the band is currently working on releasing acoustic versions of their most popular songs as singles, in advance of the launch of a full acoustic EP. To stay up to date on upcoming tour dates and give No Signal a listen, find them at NoSignal.com.

This update introduces a new perk for 529 plan holders, allowing them to transfer unused funds into a Roth IRA retirement plan tax-free and penalty-free, starting in 2024. requirement for a 529 plan's existence, for instance, may impact the timing of rollovers. John advises starting early, explaining that if the child is older when you start, it would take longer before you are eligible for rollover. Also, in deciding to convert 529 funds into a Roth IRA, families must think about their overall financial goals, considering whether the child is fully done with any further education.

John also cautions families to consider potential drawbacks, such as state tax implications, before deciding to transfer funds, acknowledging that you might have to pay taxes and a penalty if no legislation is passed to update tax rules at the state level.

When it comes to Roth IRA contributions, income limits may come into play. However, John highlights the potential benefit for high-income earners: "If you are a high-income earner and cannot make Roth contributions, this gives you a way to make those contributions." As for accessing funds for non-retirement expenses, John notes, "If the funds are in a Roth for five years, one could pull the principal out tax-free."

Ultimately, seeking professional financial advice is paramount in navigating these decisions and Young Global Wealth Strategies emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive financial plan tailored to each client's unique situation. MAKING A CONNECTION

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN 66

OVER ITS 100-YEAR HISTORY, A SERIES OF HAPHAZARD RENOVATIONS LEFT THIS BOULDER HOME DISJOINTED IN FORM AND FUNCTION BUT WITH A COMPREHENSIVE RENOVATION PLAN, HMH ARCHITECTURE + INTERIORS REINSTATED A SENSE OF CONNECTION

When a young family approached HMH about renovating their early-1900s cottage in Boulder’s beloved Newlands neighborhood, their request was simple: to restore a functional sense of flow to the home’s interiors.

The home had a classic case of good bones and great location, but it “just felt very disconnected and not at a similar scale throughout at all…It was really just kind of a hodgepodge of spaces,” as Alex Griffin, designer at HMH, puts it.

With “clean, modern, open and functional,” as their North Star, HMH created a holistic plan that would not just unify the home’s layout, but bring the structure up to present-day efficiency and connect indoors and out. Working with builder Cottonwood Custom Homes, they began by taking the house down to the studs.

"Once we brought a structural engineer on board, the expansion possibilities became more significant," reflects Alex. “It was just like, ‘Look what we can do with this place!’”

By reorganizing some of the framings, they were able to open the house up and create vaulted spaces in the front while

maintaining the existing roof and wall envelope. “Now, the new front porch acts as an extension of the living room,” Alex says.

By eliminating an enclosed pantry between the kitchen and dining room, the front and back of the house now seamlessly connect. “There's a clear connection from the street to the front all the way through to the back of the house,” emphasizes Alex.

In the kitchen, the added skylights overhead dramatically brighten the space, and granite counters, tile backsplash and a soft blue hue on the cabinetry show off the homeowners’ style and personality.

But behind gorgeous fixtures and finishes, the home’s building envelope got a makeover too: the renovation team upgraded all the insulation in the roof and walls to exceed today’s standards and all the windows were replaced with efficient triple-glazed versions. Because of multiple renovations over the years, the home had multiple heating and cooling zones using different systems, so HMH streamlined them into one efficient HVAC plan and added a radiant floor system.

“WE BUILT SUCH A STRONG RELATIONSHIP ALONG THE WAY. I THINK IT CREATED A REALLY BEAUTIFUL RESULT IN THE END, AND I THINK IT WAS A PRODUCT OF OUR PROCESS TOGETHER.”

The transformation wasn’t just about connecting the interior rooms to one another; eventually, the goal of connection came to include the outdoors as well. Skylights, window walls and natural materials all appeal to a sense of biophilia. To really bring it all together, HMH worked with landscape architect R Design to create outdoor entertaining areas, like a fire pit, grilling deck and a tiered dining patio out back.

In the end, the project was defined by the connection between the homeowners, HMH and other partners, proving the power of collaboration—and creativity.

“We built such a strong relationship along the way. I think it created a really beautiful result in the end, and I think it was a product of our process together,” Alex says. “I think this is a testament to the homeowners’ positive outlook and attitude throughout the process. Now, I think it will be a great space for them to grow into for years and years.”

KITCHEN

A granite called “Blue Nobily” for the counters makes a statement while blending with powder-blue cabinets and a punchy, geometric backsplash. “The client wanted something for the counter surfaces that was a neutral tone, but still kind of a statement piece too,” explains Alex. “So it plays up the pattern of the backsplash. But it also plays nicely with the softness of the cabinets.”

FIREPLACE

The granite on the kitchen counters continues into the den on the fireplace, connecting the two adjoined spaces. Above, handmade glazed tile in an off-white palette creates soft textural interest. “We knew we wanted something that was handmade looking and blended with the walls and ceiling of the space, but

that also wasn't too loud and still had a kind of casual vibe to it,” explains Alex of the tile choice.

BREAKFAST TABLE

“We wanted to bridge the kitchen to the den by creating a continuous window seat that grounds the space a little bit,” says Alex. “The window seat curves from the kitchen around the corner, and then that line continues across the hearth of the fireplace, which is the same stone as the kitchen. The result really brings the kitchen and breakfast area right into the den.”

DINING TO FRONT DOOR

By working with structural engineer Glenn Frank Engineering to reorganize some of the home’s framing, the team was able to dramatically open up the interiors all the way through the house, while maintaining the existing roof envelope.

FORMAL LIVING ROOM

Outfitted with custom chairs and pillows, the formal living room was designed as a space for entertaining, inspired by the owners’ love of vinyl and the artwork over the record player.

BATHROOM

“The homeowners are super-expressive, really colorful people, so that was a huge part of the finish selections,” explains Alex. “Fun pattern and color made everything just feel really inviting and playful.”

EXTERIOR

HMH worked with R Design to achieve a tidy exterior aesthetic that is both modern and timeless.

COLLABORATIVE

This Independent Boulder School Has a New Location Designed to Advance its ForwardThinking Curriculum

EDUCATION CORNER | EDUCATION 74

As Tim Breen, Ph.D., head of Watershed School in Boulder, describes how the independent school prepares its 6th through 12th-grade students for the real world, his enthusiasm is profound and sincere. It’s not about the traditional classroom setting and the standard teaching of the past, he says— it’s about encouraging kids to learn realworld solutions to real-world challenges while ensuring they feel that they are valued, contributing members of society.

Recently, Watershed School ( WatershedSchool.org) purchased and renovated two buildings on Spine Road in Boulder, and will move in this summer. The move comes twenty years after the school’s debut, signaling a new chapter in its mission to shape the next generation of critical thinkers who are passionate about learning how to make a difference in the world. In conversation about Watershed’s new building, Tim also shares more about the school’s curriculum, community partnerships and the reason why 100 percent of its graduates are accepted into college.

DESIGN THAT ENCOURAGES NEW THINKING

We're a school that works with the broader community and engages our students. The new location is in a mixed-use area. There’s some housing, restaurants, businesses and nonprofits close by. The current location is a conventional elementary school attached to a church. You can't see into the classrooms. We were able to design interior spaces that are more open, where the learning is visible and there's a palpable energy. It's a more inspiring setting for big ideas. There are different ways you can gather in a room, so you're not limited by that space. You’ve got some opportunities to expand. Flexible spaces lead to flexible thinking.

BENEFITS OF A PROGRESSIVE CURRICULUM

We want kids to learn about real challenges in the world. We use a published list of 25 challenges, the first 17 of which are the UN Sustainable Development Goals, by Tom Vander Ark (“no poverty,” “zero hunger,” “cybersecurity,” “understand the brain”). Students still learn chemistry, but they’re learning it in a pollution class, plastics class or atmospheric science class—not in a class that's labeled chemistry. It's much more engaging

for kids, which leads to better learning. When we teach a course, it's based on a big problem. Then we say, “What do we need to learn to understand this from multiple angles? What’s an opportunity for us to have an impact?”

THE ADVANTAGE OF SMALLER CLASS SIZES

Currently, we have 117 students. Our average class size is 12, but it can range from 8 to 17. It’s great because it's enough people and enough minds to think about an issue and bring in different ideas, but it's small enough for the teacher to give detailed feedback.

INCLUSIVE TUITION

It’s a big investment for families, but we give out a lot of tuition assistance because we don't want finances to be a barrier. All travel is included. For the May term, which is from the end of April into May, students take only one course that usually involves two weeks of travel. They’ll go to Iceland or Guatemala or Mexico. We're headed to Vietnam soon. It’s not just a tourist experience—it’s a deep academic experience as well.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SERVING LOCAL COMMUNITIES

There’s a presentation I’ve given called “20 Billion Hours.” There are 16 million high school students in the United States who do about 1,200 hours of academic work a year, but almost none of that goes to improving our communities or making a contribution beyond the walls of the school. One of our middle school classes is called “Farm to Table.” Students learn about food challenges, work with a local food bank and stock the shelves. We then ask the food bank, "What research could we do that would be useful to you?”. Our students can do that research. We want to tap into the energy and potential of young people so they can see themselves as contributors. We help kids develop a sense of hope for the future. We don't just focus on problems—we focus on solutions, too.

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE AND BEYOND.

We’re not a conventional college prep school, and colleges get it. When they see a portfolio of impact that these kids can share, they're impressed. Our kids are so used to engaging and asking questions and working closely with adults. They’re not shy. That’s a powerful skill to have in college. These kids are owning their education and making the most of it.

COLLECTIONS OF RED

Low Rider, nestled on the corner of Hygiene Rd and N 75th St, is an oasis of “found beauty and shared stories”. The Low Rider team spends their days road-tripping in a sea foam green vintage Bronco in pursuit of the next find they can bring back to life and send off to its next home, but in between days on the road, they are passionate about finding local and young artists in the community to feature in

the shop, from selling their art, jewelry and goods to hosting classes, young artist pop-ups and art shows. The most recent art show Low Rider hosted is, “Collections of Red”, featuring the art of Dom Ioppolo, a student at Silver Creek High School, who spends his days residing and painting at the base of Haystack Mountain, and he is a young artist not to be missed.

Dom speaks to his collection:

“'RED' encompasses more than just a color; it represents an observation, a deeper introspection that symbolizes a broader perspective on the world. My art is devoid of personal opinion, relying solely on pure observation and creativity. Often, words fail to fully express my thoughts, prompting me to use art as a substitute for language.

During the creative process, my mind is flooded with countless images, guiding me through the development of my work. The unique appeal of my art lies in its ability to be messy, clean, or a combination of both.

I engage with a variety of materials, including leather, canvas, fabric, wood and paper. The journey to the final piece often involves multiple attempts, painting over previous layers, and experimenting with new visuals until the desired outcome is achieved. Working on several projects simultaneously allows me not to over-concentrate on a single piece, fostering a natural flow of creativity.”

LR: DOM, WHERE AND WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

DOM: Boulder's like my own art palette. The colors here are just really awesome, you know? And there’s Pearl Street with these cool brick walls—it's like, the way they’re built just pops into my mind when I’m working on my art.

LR: WHICH ARTIST HAS BEEN A BIG INSPIRATION FOR YOU?

DOM: Jean-Michel Basquiat. I was just painting one day, and my mom showed me his art. It was wild because it looked kinda like mine. I always wanna keep my style fresh, though—no copying, just being me.

LR: WHAT IS ART TO YOU?

DOM: Art's like... it's like taking all the stuff I see when I’m quiet in school and turning it into something cool. I’m not a big talker; I’m the guy who watches and listens, and that’s what art is to me—seeing things and making them come alive in my work. So I just really am always observing. Using that to create art, that's why I think “art is just really observation”.

LR: HAVE YOU TRIED PAINTING WITH ANY UNUSUAL MATERIALS?

DOM: I’ve used stuff like leather and wood, and my dad’s old canvas drop cloths. They're all stained and rough, which makes my art feel more real.

LR: WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A YOUNG ARTIST? ANY BIG CHALLENGES?

DOM: Yeah, school can be tough. Like, my teachers don't really see the artist side of me yet. So I'm excited to show them just who I am outside of school.

LR: HOW DO YOU GET READY TO CREATE ART?

DOM: I do this thing where I channel other dimensions. But it's like I connect to another place when I paint. It’s intense, so I have to keep things light with incense and crystals to stay grounded. And my visions? They're super vivid, like dreams telling me what to paint next.

“I GUESS IT’S JUST ABOUT NOT WORRYING ABOUT WHAT OTHERS THINK TOO MUCH.

LIKE, JUST DO YOUR THING. IF YOU’RE TRUE TO THAT, IT’S ALL

GONNA WORK OUT.”
LOCAL LIMELIGHT | ARTS + CULTURE

LR: YOU MENTIONED A PORTAL AT YOUR HOME. DOES THAT INFLUENCE YOUR ART?

DOM: Definitely. This one time, I felt like the whole Native American tribe was right there with me, which was pretty intense. I think their energy helps guide me, like protectors or something.

LR: IF YOU WEREN’T DOING ART, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR GO-TO FOR SELF-EXPRESSION?

DOM: I’d say fashion. I catch some flak for the stuff I wear at school. I like to mix it up, and try new styles. People might not get it at first, but then they're all over it. Music's cool too. I've started messing around with instruments, which is pretty awesome.

LR: HOW HAS YOUR ART CHANGED OVER TIME?

DOM: I used to be all about comics, drawing characters and stuff. But then I took that leap from doodling in my notebooks to slapping it on canvases. It worked out. I think my future art will be like the upgraded version of now—same Dom, just better.

LR: HOW MUCH DOES COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOUR ART, AND DO YOU WORK WITH OTHER ARTISTS?

DOM: I’ve tried to collab, but sometimes people get too opinionated about my stuff. Even in school, teachers critique a lot of my creative ideas and it can get annoying to hear. I don’t really pour meaning into my art; it's more about what it could mean to someone else. Just gotta stay true to myself, you know?

LR: YOU'VE GOT A REALLY MATURE WAY OF HANDLING YOUR ART. HOW'D YOU GET THERE?

DOM: Thanks. I guess it’s just about not worrying about what others think too much. Like, just do your thing. If you’re true to that, it’s all gonna work out.

MUST SEE | FOOD + BEVERAGE 86

In a culinary world that seems to be ever-changing, it’s often difficult to find your constants. One that’ll never change? A good old slice of pizza. This month we rounded up some of Boulder’s best for those moments when you just can’t kick the craving for a cheesy triangular slice of goodness.

Kicking it off with the ultimate old-school classic, The Sink - a Boulder staple for over 100 years. And while the burger has stolen the show for years, their pizza isn't what first crosses your mind, it is what has gotten the attention from Obama to Anthony Bourdain to the Mayor of Flavortown himself, Guy Fieri. Their “Ugly Crust” pizza couldn’t be more of a beautiful masterpiece, with the extra big and thick crust added as the signature touch by the Heinritz brothers when they purchased The Sink in the 90s. And of course a crust isn’t complete without some honey to enjoy dipping every last bite of that “ugly” crust.

Next on our list is the upscale East Pearl Staple—Pizzeria Alberico. An established favorite of Boulderites, Pizzeria Alberico, the former Pizzeria Locale, underwent a grand refresh earlier in 2023. Alberico is the maiden name of Dannette Stuckey, wife of Bobby Stuckey, Co-Founder of Frasca Hospitality Group. Its ample menu features staples beyond just red and white pizzas, like arancini, charcuterie and polpetta. Its signature Mais pizza, topped with crème fraîche,

pancetta, corn, mozzarella, pecorino and chives is a dish that stood firm throughout its rebrand-and rightfully so. It pairs perfectly with a Southern Italian-inspired sip, with options from the full bar emphasizing classic and craft cocktails and regional wines. As the weather warms with spring’s arrival, Pizzeria Alberico will continue to be the hot spot for al-fresco dining on the patio or a quick bite at the bar.

Barchetta, on Walnut, was founded by Chef Jesse Jensen and is his love letter to pizza. Featuring hand-crafted pies perfect for sharing with family and friends, it has got to be one of the best spots around town. Barchetta knows pizza, so if you’re feeling real Italian, try the Ruby: topped with vodka sauce, mozzarella, provolone, parmesan and herbs (and don't forget the Spicy Shallot Ranch). They are also not afraid to shake things up, so take a walk on the wild side and try one of their unique creations, the Clam Pie, The Potato Boy or The Bee Thousand. Right downtown, this pizzeria serves up the classic American dining experience fit with a buzzing communal space perfect for hosting your next party or private event.

For a bonus slice if you find yourself road tripping down to Denver, don't miss making a stop at Provolino to try a slice of Caleb's Midnight Delight complete with alfredo sauce, mozzarella, sweet chili crunch, fresh herbs. Chef Jeff Schwing will make sure to swing by your table and make sure you complete your meal with some Fernet.

The last slice in this round-up goes out to Fringe A Well-Tapped Eatery, right off Valmont and 28th Street. Created with hopes to bring communities together in a casual and comfortable atmosphere to eat great high-quality food, this charming corner spot is the perfect place for those coming right off a mountain rafting trip or a hike up Sanitas, or for a fun family night out. With unique toppings including fried eggplant parmesan, lamb pepperoni and pickled red onions, Fringe bolsters creativity like none other—especially with their self-pour tap wall featuring 16 beer and wine options, boasted as Boulder’s first do-it-yourself style spot. The cherry on top? Date night can become game night as their pizzas are served with your own scissors to slice. Half a pie or eight individual pieces—no judgment here!

From a late-night stop to mid-day dining gems, Boulder’s culinary scene has certainly got some goodies. Whether it's an old reliable spot or one you've yet to visit, we hope this month’s Pizza Round-Up satisfies those irresistible cravings. Because who doesn’t love pizza?

THE HOUSE OF TODD REED

TODD REED FINE JEWELRY AND THE ART OF BUILDING A LEGACY

HOT SPOT | ARTS + CULTURE
92

The fashion world has a complicated relationship with America. Factors like cultural diversity, practicality versus fashion, socioeconomic factors to consumerism and fast fashion all contribute to the multi-faceted nature of fashion and style in American society. Thinking of “American heritage brands”, it’s no coincidence that products and accessories designed in the U.S. aren’t seen as “experimental” or as “generation-defining” as some of the fashion designers on foreign shores—yet we know a certain someone in our backyard, who’s legacy and reputation might beg to differ.

Enter Todd Reed. The hallmark of Todd Reed jewelry design is not a desire to set trends, but rather a deep and abiding respect for the people who will wear his pieces. His customers form a relationship with what they are putting on their body and are

a part of an experience much more intentional than just jewelry shopping. “Each piece I design physically and spirituality expresses the intention, vision and creative energy that brought it into being,” says Todd. “In this way, I, as the artist, remain present long after a piece leaves the studio.”

Todd’s great grandfather, Otto Sommer, was brought into the industry when his mother married Mr. Tissot of Tissot Watches. Otto worked in the Tissot watch factory in Switzerland in the 1940’s, before coming to Philadelphia and opening a store on Sansom Street. As a child, Todd would sit around the dinner table and hear about people he never met and places he hadn’t yet been, and fell in love with the story of his family lineage.” I always had a leaning towards fixing things,” says Todd. “I loved hearing stories about the men and women in my family that worked in this industry, and who were people that came from this tradition of making things.”

“As a young designer,” Todd says, “I found myself gravitating towards whatever heritage brand I could understand: Cartier, Hermes, Ralph Lauren.” Luxury heritage brands such as these put the quality of the design and the niche that the brand

PHYSICALLY AND SPIRITUALITY EXPRESSES THE INTENTION, VISION AND CREATIVE ENERGY THAT BROUGHT IT INTO BEING.”

represents in the culture, rather than what the culture may need at the time. “When I started my brand,” says Todd. “I wanted to make something like that.”

In the early 1990s, as Todd established his jewelry company and as his small business grew, he began to incorporate raw diamonds into his designs; diamonds that are diverse, uncut, pure, and conflict free. And something totally different. “I wanted the jewelry to look like it could have been found at the site of an ancient shipwreck, or that it was just put in a modern art museum, and it’s relevant in all situations,” says Todd, speaking of his early days designing jewelry. “I was designing the jewelry in the naive voice that I had, and might still have, but from a principle of design that is ubiquitous with heritage: going against the grain.”

Designing pieces in this singular style, incorporating natural and recycled materials, Todd Reed created an entirely new category of fine jewelry. These pieces are created from a combination of classic and modern-day metalsmithing techniques, each piece one-of-a-kind and containing character completely unique to their design and construction. “I let the work speak for itself. I want to show the work, the aspects of the work and materials, and the integrity of the materials and the fabrication.”

Todd refers to his pieces as talismans, not only for the individuals, but for the world. They have a reason for existing in people’s lives, and contain something that is felt when it’s seen. “For example, I’m not so inspired by the holidays, so I don’t make holiday jewelry,” he says. “But I’m inspired by the warmth

of family; that’s a beautiful feeling.” He and his team always bounce ideas back onto their core principles, the most important being kindness, and their commitment to sustainability.

“We embed the pieces with beautiful energy, and we address the world with beauty and love. I know I’m not a rocket scientist, but I know that we can make people smile. I understand the nature of what we’re doing, and what we can create for people. And that’s a real privilege.”

The Todd Reed team has fluctuated, growing bigger and getting smaller throughout the years. As of now, Todd feels more confident than ever in their small, but mighty, size. The general manager orchestrates the operations of the brand with warmth and ease, reinforcing the notion that the vitality of their business relies on the people that comprise and surround it. Curated to embody the values and vision of Todd Reed, their team is in an evolution, reaching new heights of incredible work and service towards their clients and themselves. “I couldn’t do it without them,” Todd says of the jewelers and associates on his team. “They just get it. We collaborate together so well, and all together we make things happen.” Focused on voice and style, the Todd Reed team doesn’t just make one thing—they make one-of-a-kinds. And they do it as a family.

In the world of moving quickly, of more and more, faster and faster, heritage is a slow burn. It’s something that we’re not so accustomed to in this time and culture, and that’s why Todd knows it’s a great time to start telling the story. A member of his beloved team and a

key part to Todd Reed’s story is his one and only daughter, Flora. And it’s hard to tell who is more proud of who.

Flora, now 21, has grown up in the business. “She sat on my lap when I was a stonesetter and welder,” says Todd. “And something curious about Flora: everything comes naturally to her.” Being around his passion for jewelry and seeing his eclectic designs come to life firsthand, Flora understands the importance of how a creative’s life doesn't end when you lock up the shop - it’s embedded in their existence.

“Our top line is the 395 Line,” says Flora, who currently works at Todd Reed as their shipping and inventory assistant. “The diamonds are really heavily clustered at the bottom, and sort of fizzle upward.” She learned about a year ago that the 395 Line was inspired by her three-year-old self, sitting in a hot tub with Dad in Puerto Rico, fascinated by the bubbles surrounding them. “And my dad wasn’t even the one to tell me that story!” Flora laughs.

Flora and Todd’s relationship has grown over the years as Flora’s involvement in the business has increased, and as they have found balance in running the business together, along with the rest of the team. Todd thrives off connection with people, forming relationships and creating something special to embody that. Flora, on the other hand, has a deep respect for the practicality, logistics, and behind-the-scenes technicality. “I like making sure everything is working and running smoothly,” Flora says. “I love things to be organized, to operate well and consistently. And this is how my dad and I have been for my entire life - he has these big, creative ideas, and I like to help make them work.”

Although not as sure of the future as her father was at 21, one thing Flora knows is that the company will be hers one day. And she’ll be ready for it. “For now, I’m along for the ride,” she says. “But I will never let it (Todd Reed) go to someone else. It will always be mine, I just don't know what that looks like yet.”

CLASSIC AND MODERN-DAY METALSMITHING TECHNIQUES, EACH PIECE ONEOF-A-KIND...
“I'm never going to take the name away. It’s

special, it’s family, it’s a legacy… it’s him.”

Todd Reed’s jewelry shines as a beacon of artistry and tradition, embodying the essence of timeless beauty and uncompromising quality. Rise Against Suicide’s Strategies for Saving Lives Among Colorado Youth

The pandemic changed how we understand mental health ––months of isolation, grief and uncertainty transformed our approach to this critical piece of our health and wellbeing. But despite this shift, some truths remain: mental health is invisible, social barriers persist and financial limitations prevent access to lifesaving care. Fortunately, there is a successful model for providing no-cost therapy to young people vulnerable to suicide.

Rise Against Suicide has created an innovative approach to connecting adolescents with mental health support when and where they need it. No waitlists. No doctor referrals. No cost.

“We keep the intake questions to the bare minimum so there’s no intimidation. We don’t need a doctor’s note, we don’t ask about citizenship, insurance status, or financials. We only have two pieces of paperwork that need to be signed and if a young person is 12 or older they can sign for themselves,” explains Jenna Clinchard, executive director at Rise.

It can be intimidating for youths to seek mental health support when they are contemplating suicide or self-harm, and that’s why the team of 35 licensed therapists that partner with Rise meet adolescents within 24-72 hours, wherever kids feel safest, so there is never a waitlist. Rise’s Program Director, Bill Heaston, has also prioritized better serving diverse youth by partnering with bicultural and bilingual BIPOC therapists to increase comfort in seeking help.

“I have never had a therapist who was the same race as me. It helps me feel like I can share things with him and I won’t have to explain why I feel the way I do.”

they need without having to leave school. “75% of our young people are referred to us through school counselors but parents, guardians and kiddos are also welcome to reach out to us directly,” Clinchard shares.

The reality is that counselors are inundated right now. The days of a school counselor’s job primarily focusing on guiding students through what classes to take and how to graduate are over –– they are now on the frontlines of a mental and behavioral health crisis. To help this influx, Rise created an online system where counselors can refer at-risk students in 60 seconds.

In our current global mental health crisis, feeling safe and grounded takes consistent, intentional work. Increasing

economic instability, continued social isolation, worsening climate disasters, conflict and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic contribute to the continued emotional dysregulation of adults, leaving kids and young adults without adequate support while they too experience the chaotic state of the world.

Since 2021, Rise has seen a 134% increase in referrals and 136% increase in sessions, with referrals continuing to increase year after year, showing the growing need for this accessible and life-saving mental health care.

One of the ways Rise eliminates barriers for therapists to better serve the community is by paying them directly. "In Colorado, we have seen many therapists leave the mental health field due to

GIVING BACK LOCAL SERVICES 102

increased caseload, insurance billing challenges and the inability to receive fair wages.  Rise allows our therapists to choose how many young people they want to serve, pays our therapists directly, and also pays a fair rate for our geographic area.  We know how important their work is, we see the lives it saves, so Rise ensures we are meeting our therapist's need too,” says Clinchard.

“We are primarily funded by individuals in the community,” Clinchard explains. “In the past year or two, we’ve seen those smaller donations decrease which is understandable because we’re all experiencing the impact of inflation. People need that $25 a month to pay for groceries, utility bills and rent,” explains Clinchard.

Because Rise relies on individual donations over state or federal funding, increased community support is necessary to meet the growing demand for mental health services. The increasing referrals show the urgency and importance of expanding Rise’s mission in Colorado. The need is present and the only barrier to Rise’s expansion is funding.

Rise hosts two annual fundraising events, their Emerge 5k in May, and their Holiday Star Program which runs from November through January.

“I've had people reach out from Denver and Larimer County asking if we can bring our services to their school district and we’d like to expand but it is all about the fundraising," says Clinchard. "If we can get that support, we can get the therapists, we can develop relationships with the school districts and we can make sure that these young people are never turned away, never put on a waitlist, They get the help they need within 24-72 hours and the kids or their families will never see a bill.”

“My 15-year-old son was deeply depressed and suicidal. Having limited financial resources, we were desperate to keep him safe and find outgoing therapy we could pay for without becoming homeless. We called over 30 resources trying to find help for him, and finally through his school, found RISE. Words cannot express the relief and hope Rise offered at a time we so desperately needed help.” - Rise Parent [story shortened for print]

“ I got Maurer’s name from a friend and Tami said ‘No problem -- they’re gonna take a lot of work, but that’s what we do.’ Now they look so good -- like new. The whole project went like clockwork. Their crew leaders, Aidan and Armando, were very easy to work with; extremely professional, neat and thorough. I feel so much better now! Before Covid there was an expectation of craftsmanship and professionalism, and somehow during Covid, it just dropped -- like, Oh my, is this how things are going to be now? Giving Back and Getting Back to the Land

CONTINUED > 107 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDER MAY 2024

Sitting down with Oliver Retzloff and Eric Knutson of Wild Nectar Farm, it’s hard to be anything but optimistic. Over the past 12 years, they’ve taken a dry, barren plot of land in Longmont and rejuvenated the soil to grow a multitude of flowers and support a flock of sheep.

They started small, getting the grass to come back and cleaning up the flower beds. Then, they ran pigs in the field, utilizing the animals as a way to help revitalize the land. Over time, they’ve built on their practice and methods, creating a business focused on regenerative agriculture and organic, biodynamic principles.

“This place…has become an oasis for us,” says Retzloff.

It’s not hard to see why. At the time of publication, there will be ranunculus, anemone, tulips, lilacs, crabapples, and early perennials sprouting—and around 50 sheep having babies! They also have three dogs, two cats, two horses and around a dozen chickens who all call the farm home.

Retzloff sees the upkeep and beautification of this land as part of his job and loves creating this habitat for pollinators and animals alike. What started as “just homesteading” for the couple has become a full-time work and lifestyle commitment, aimed at improving their little patch of land as much as they can in their lifetime.

“THIS PLACE…HAS BECOME AN OASIS FOR US.”

Knutson and Retzloff dream of a world where more people grow in their backyards or on their patios and become more independently food secure, and they have some sage advice for farmers, growers and gardeners of all levels, especially now as we head into the growing season.

BUT RETZLOFF’S BEST ADVICE? START SLOW.

from a local grower. If you’re in Boulder, there’s plenty of great plant sales, and he recommendssupportingGrowingGardens.

Depending on your plants, you could also be using the time for deadheading, pruning roses or putting perennials into the ground. If you’re planning to add some color to your garden this season, maybe in the form of dahlias, zinnias or cosmos, he recommends holding off until after Mother’s Day to make sure we’re through the worst of the freezes.

One of Retzloff’s greatest joys in the process has been this return to seasonality. The growing season in Colorado is so short that during some months there will be no income from their farm. That takes a lot of planning and faith in the fact that it’s all going to work out.

They store in the fall to get through winter and use the winter to slow down andrest, justliketheplants.Theycouldbe forging ahead and trying to grow all year long, but they enjoy the natural rhythm of following the seasons, harkening back to before we became so industrialized.

But Retzloff’s best advice? Start slow.

We all wanttogettothefinishline, but in his experience, taking the time to watch how things develop and grow, especially across multiple seasons and years, has saved the pairalotofheartache.

The growing season is Retzloff’s busiest by far, and he finds so much joy in the job— from seed all the way to delivery. His job is toputtheseedintothedirtandwitnessand support the plants as they grow and bloom.

“When you are actively putting work into cultivating the earth, it responds in a positive way,” Retzloff said.

For the spring season, Retzloff recommends focusing on getting your beds prepped and applying compost and soil amendments. This is also the time to cultivate your own seeds or buy small plants

Unlike Retzloff, who grew up nearby, Knutson didn’t grow up on a farm or around livestock. He studied soil and crop science at CSU and fell in love with farming and ranching over on the Caribou Ranch.  He recently received a grant from Boulder County to support his lambing operation and grazing business, and he’s excited to use the funds to empower more people to be a part of this.  He also serves as the president of the Flatirons Farmers Coalition or FCC. It’s a network of young farmers in the area, and itprovidesbothKnutsonandRetzloffwith much-needed community and support.

Retzloff also has to work on actively accepting that there’s so much out of his control. On their farm, whole crops will fail, or they’ll get some hungry grasshoppers. Some years, none of the tulips will come up because the winter is too hot.  It takes a lot of practice to not let those disappointments get him down, especially as a self-proclaimed perfectionist. It also helps to have a supportive partner who can remind him that he can’t control everything—and to have a community of farmers who are often going through the same struggles.

Everyonein the FCC is united in the choice to be inspired by the land—and to accept the adventures that come along with it. Every day is a different challenge, so Knutson insists that you really have to be called to it and to get some satisfaction out of beingconnectedtotheearth.

Knutson loves the feeling that they’re all in it together, often sharing resources and evolved methods with each other. He insists that people aren’t meant to farm alone, and he loves working with his neighbors and bringing younger people onto the farm.

WILD NECTAR FARM

The FCC has many first-generation farmers and operators, and the guidance of the organization helps them get past the most challenging years: the first ten! After ten years, Knutson says you’ve seen enough seasons to really figure it out and to go from keeping your head above water to truly beginning a lifelong quest of mastery.

He also says it helps that they have such a supportive broader community here in Boulder County. They’re willing to go the extra mile, sometimes quite literally, to support local farmers and ranchers.

If you’d like to support Wild Nectar Farm, you can find Retzloff’s flowers at numerous florists around town, including Fiori Flowers, Boulder Blooms, A Florae and Plume & Furrow.

They’d also recommend getting involved with boulder-based Mad Agriculture to learn more about regenerative farming and to watch Common Ground to learn more about the world’s soil.

TALKING WINE WITH B TOWN WINE AND SPIRITS’ SARAH JARRACH

Wine is an amalgamation of identity, history and viticulture. Behind each sip, whether dry or sweet, is a millennium of recipes, fermentation and cultivation dating back to ancient China. Wine is more than just a drink, but a link to the past, present and future.

Sarah Jarrach, owner of Boulder’s B Town Wine and Spirits, remarks on the significance of wine to our culture and lives. “It is really all about togetherness,” Sarah states. “It is just about sharing food and drink with people close to you.” Wine can enhance a meal, establish harmony between strangers, ignite a healthy debate or act as a companion to a good book after a long day. As much as the flavor notes influence your selection, you are the author of your own drinking experience.

SIPPING

The vinification of wine is a deliberate and unique process. The same can almost be said for Sarah’s journey; from young wine enthusiast to owner of a small, local wine and tastings shop, it is all about the process. “My original plan was to go to culinary school,” Sarah says. She started working small jobs, ranging from sandwich shops to hotel restaurants all in an effort to support the dream. One day, Sarah struck up a conversation with a sommelier named Dana Eastman, a catalyst in her exploration of viticulture. “That just really started my love of wine,” Sarah recollects. She redirected her focus to studying wine theory and tasting wines. She took an entry-level position at Superior Liquor Market to immerse herself in the culture and enrolled in courses with the Court of Master Sommeliers. Sarah passed the courses and Certified Sommelier exam and was later promoted to buyer at 24. After 5 years of being the general manager at B Town Wine and Spirits, Sarah bought the store in April of 2023.

Working in the world of wine always comes with a learning curve. “It’s so much more than just what’s in the bottle,” Sarah explains. There are guidelines and differences in processes based on region and centuries of culture in every bottle. “We could learn a ton from the Europeans,” Sarah believes. She denotes all the shop’s wines that are practicing organic farming, many of which are European imports because there are more organic producers

B TOWN WINE AND SPIRITS

in Europe than here in America. “I am more focused on finding wine that is still an agricultural product. Small production estates that focus on the health of their soil, vines and ecosystems rather than producing a million cases.” Sarah also raises an important question: “Why would they [farmers] have started using pesticides, when the family has been farming for centuries and never started using them in the first place?” The issue of pesticide application in American farming relates to an even bigger conversation surrounding agricultural sustainability. “If you have healthy, live soil, your grape vines will just be healthier and will not need as much help… the bigger picture is more in balance,” Sarah says.

Finding a shop like B Town Wine and Spirits with a shop owner such as Sarah is refreshing. Sarah is uber-conscious of the wine she is both selecting and selling while holding an extensive knowledge of wine theory and sustainable practices under her belt. She tastes everything before it enters the shop, perfectly curating a diverse selection for Boulder’s best oenophiles. “I believe my job is to get people the best wine for the money and I believe that fantastic bottles can be found at any price point," Sarah says. "I love sharing wines from overlooked regions and showcasing weird grapes in an approachable way.”

Discover for yourself what makes B Town Wine and Spirits so special! Try their evening wine tastings, every Friday from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

KEVIN BOX'S PROFOUND

With its rich history, diverse array of contemporary works and unwavering commitment to fostering artistic dialogue, SmithKlein Gallery on Pearl Street stands as a cornerstone of Boulder's artistic landscape. As the gallery celebrates its tenth year under its current ownership and looks forward to commemorating 40 years in Boulder, the partnership with sculptor Kevin Box stands as proof of their enduring devotion to promoting artistic innovation, meaningful relationships and community engagement.

Starting with a fascination with Kevin Box’s unique approach to translating works of origami to sculpture, SmithKlein Gallery saw in him not only an exceptional artist but also a kindred spirit in their dedication to creating important alliances within the artistic community. Nathan and Ann Klein, SmithKlein Gallery’s owners, maintain a philosophy of nurturing essential relations with the artists they represent. "I recall seeing his work up at Loveland and being very intrigued with the idea of making bronze, steel, and aluminum look like paper," reminisces Nathan. This initial intrigue blossomed into a profound partnership and friendship, as they invested in Kevin’s work and embarked on collaborative ventures that transcended mere business transactions. "What we look for is not only talented artists but artists that we have a really strong connection with,” underscores Nathan. “Ultimately, in our business, these artists become our dear friends. They become like family." It is through these deep-rooted connections and collaborative efforts that SmithKlein Gallery continues to thrive as a guidepost of creativity in the Boulder art scene.

Kevin Box explains the evolution of his artistic vision and the techniques he employs in his sculptures as an intentional design approach. "I definitely approached my work early on with a design/graphic problem-solving mind," says Kevin. “My uncle had a graphic design company that I interned at for a number of summers, and he introduced me to team problem-solving—attacking a visual communications problem with a group of designers… When seeking my creative voice as an artist I approached it in a similar way, trying different aesthetic approaches to tell similar stories, until I found the strongest one—the one you see now.” With collaboration lying at the heart of Kevin's artistic process, he goes on to explain that his art is a team effort from start to finish. "When I first pioneered the technique of casting paper

into bronze," Kevin explains, "I was really pleased with my results... I also saw my own limitations and realized I wasn’t going to become an origami master overnight." Embracing this association, Box reached out to origami masters like Robert Lang and Beth Johnson among others, initiating partnerships that have yielded stunning works of art over the years.

ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN, the monumental outdoor sculpture exhibition, stands at the forefront of Kevin's artistic repertoire, a testament to his collaborative spirit and innovative vision. Inspired by his wife Jennifer's dance education background, Kevin and Jennifer sought to expand beyond traditional gallery spaces, envisioning a

traveling exhibition designed for botanical gardens to reach a broader audience. This ambitious endeavor, which showcases larger works not intended for sale, has graced over 20 botanical gardens across North America, inviting viewers to explore themes of transformation and interconnectedness through the beauty of origami. Coordinating such a vast exhibition poses logistical and creative challenges, yet for Kevin and Jennifer, the collective rewards outweigh the difficulties. With meticulous planning and hands-on installation, each step underscores the importance of teamwork and shared vision. Transforming origami into durable metal sculptures fit for outdoor display requires a delicate balance of artistry and craftsmanship, a challenge that Kevin embraces passionately.

As Kevin Box’s work continues to captivate audiences across the country, he remains committed to spreading his message through his art. "You will see that peace is a common and repeated theme,” Kevin reflects. He goes on to explain the significance and importance behind the “unfolded” works that he creates to show alongside the “folded” sculptures, describing that he always requests two models from the origami artists that he works with “to reveal the sublime and mystical beauty discovered only by deconstructing the work.” Kevin explains further, “The complexity and beauty we see on the outside is eclipsed by what is found in

the invisible realm of the inside. In life and origami. The mandalas, stars and otherwise spiritual imagery found in the unfolded origami is the most profound imagery to me. It more accurately represents the beauty found hidden within each of us and everything in this mystery of life we share."

From his early days as a graphic designer to his current status as a renowned sculptor, Kevin Box's journey has been marked by a relentless pursuit of artistic excellence and pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums. Through his innovative approach and his unwavering commitment to collaboration, Kevin continues to inspire audiences with his captivating creations, inviting viewers to explore the boundless possibilities of artistic expression. In describing his wishes for the viewers of his work, Kevin states, “We hope it’s beautiful to begin with, interesting to learn about along the way and inspiring in the end.”
