Finding Your Tribe S

MAY 2017

ince graduating from college more than three years ago, I’ve learned a lot in the working world. Most importantly, the value of relationships. During Boulder Lifestyle’s annual women entrepreneurs shoot hosted at Alpine Modern Cafe (The best avocado toast in town!) the event solidified the true value of making connections. Women in tech learned a thing or two from the entrepreneurs in fashion, and vice versa. Business cards were exchanged like confetti and glasses clinked as each girlboss shared their startup success story. The feature story written by talented writer Jessi Hackett titled “Les Femmes,” shares each woman’s stories, successes and tidbits of advice. Lindsey Laurain, the mind behind the now national brand ezpz, told her about her best piece of professional advice: "Take joy in other people’s success." Sara Bercholz with Shambhala Publications/Roost Books had a refreshing way to overcome adversity: "Be kind in every situation." And Carin Reich, the artist and a brand wiz with Carin Reich Studio, gave us her two cents on the best way to network: “Find your tribes and immerse yourself in those communities.” My tribe consists of mentors who have a way of guiding me through an unusual career path (Thank you, Kate Manz, Allyson Reedy and Katelyn Hutson). It consists of family members and friends who always offer an ear, and inspire fresh new ways of thinking. And of course, coworkers (Felicia Meyers, Robin Bond) who are superwomen and hustle in the office while also succeeding as a full-time student and a full-time mother. Take time to thank your tribe, grow your tribe and enjoy your tribe. This issue celebrates the ladies in your life, whether you’re working in the business world, taking on duties at home, or maybe a little bit of both, we celebrate you. Until next time, Dana Lapinel

All golfers will enjoy 18 holes, breakfast by Evol, and dinner by Pasta Jay’s. Pollard Jeep will provide a car for one of our Hole-in-One prizes. Guidance “I highly recommend your selection of David to be your builder. Such selection early in the process will enable him to provide input into the design, and manifest his construction experience to help you achieve a smoother, more accurately and holistically planned and executed construction project.” -Boulder Architect

Trust “We are in the process of building our dream home and have added many complicated elements to the project along the way. David, and Ellis Construction, have been very easy to work with throughout the project. Whenever we have asked them to research complicated details for the project i.e. an elevator, photovoltaic solar system required by Boulder County, fire suppression system and outdoor fireplace, he has thoroughly researched the items and provided us with thoughtful, high value solutions. David has shown professionalism and dedication to respecting our budget throughout the project and the addition of our extra work. I would not hesitate to recommend Ellis Construction; they are an honest, dependable and reliable builder.” -Boulder Clients, New Home

Relationship “As we come to the end of our “project”, I’d like to reflect on the process of not only building a home, but also developing a relationship of appreciation, mutual respect & continuous support & understanding with our builder. We believe this relationship, along with, his level of knowledge in the field was key in creating an atmosphere where superior workmanship stands out. Our home is GORGEOUS!” -Boulder/Michigan Clients, 2nd Home Remodel

Quality “We had worked with other builders initially (and had to fire them for poor work and poor communication) before finding David and it was night and day. Building a house is a tremendously complex process where there are constant choices to be made by the owner and if the builder can’t effectively explain those choices in a timely manner and also layout the overall itinerary of the build, it can go badly and be more expensive in the end.” -Boulder Clients, New Home

Value “We hired David Ellis to add a second story to our home and to update the existing space. We were very pleased with the quality of work and high level of professionalism from Ellis Construction. At the outset, David went well beyond the other prospective builders in doing due diligence on the house in order to present very realistic costs and time frame. The six-month construction project was completed on time and on budget.” -Boulder Clients, Renovation

The Difference “If you join forces with this reputable builder, you should have a pleasurable and successful outcome and be ensured that there will be no shortcuts or big charge variations. I always felt Ellis Construction was looking out for my best interest and getting the job done swiftly and correctly and treated me like family. I couldn’t be more sincere in my recommendation.” -Boulder Client, New Home

WHAT WAS YOUR MISSION IN THE OUTSET? HOW HAS IT EVOLVED?

To design my own line of luxury ostrich-leather accessories. But, that has completely evolved into an “Africa Curated” line, which is a vehicle for telling the story of both Karoo Collection, and other women-owned businesses, either based in Africa or inspired by Africa. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK ETHIC?

I am constantly striving, pushing, wanting more, and I hold other people to high standards. I have a hard time with work-life balance on a day-to-day basis as I get wrapped up in the to-dos. However, I will work hard for a concentrated period, and then allow myself to play hard. FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE, DO YOU THINK BEING A FEMALE HAS INFLUENCED YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS?

I don’t think being a female has influenced my approach, I think

BROOKE BERLIN KAROO COLLECTION

being myself has influenced my approach. There might be men out there who are as heart-forward and bottom-line backward as I am and there might be women out there more driven with A-type personalities than I am. I have a hard time associating business with gender as I think it has more to do with the person, the industry and the end game. BEST PIECE OF PERSONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

I practice yoga, and one of the best lessons from a great teacher was: lead with your heart.

WHAT WAS YOUR MISSION IN THE OUTSET? HOW HAS IT EVOLVED?

Originally, we just wanted to make family mealtime less messy, less stressful and more fun. But, we had no idea the impact our products would have within the special needs community. There are now many kids and adults with disabilities that are eating independently for the first time. We now have a Speech Language Pathologist on our team and work with medical professionals throughout the world. DO YOU HAVE A HERO?

My husband. He is a rock star and has so many noble qualities that I admire. BEST PIECE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

Be you, be kind, be honest and do what is right. WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A LEADER?

I prefer “Team Captain.” I truly love motivating and inspiring others.

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOUR IDEA OR CONCEPT FOR ROOST BOOKS?

My father is the founder of Shambhala Publications and he always told me that I could explore all my interests in publishing. In my twenties, I was working in my family business and my interest in food was becoming an obsession. A friend introduced me to a food blog, a relatively new thing in 2007, called La “Tartine Gourmande”. I fell in love and could see immediately that the photographs, stories and recipes would make an enchanting book. That was the first seed for Roost Books. WHAT DOES A PRODUCTIVE WORK DAY FOR YOU LOOK LIKE?

One in which I give my employees the support they need to do their jobs well and where I have a chance to do creative thinking. WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A LEADER?

Yes, but I was very reluctant to for a long time. But the older I get the more I realize that often younger women are looking to me as an example – whether it be as a business woman, mother, practitioner, or whatever. NUMBER ONE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY?

Be kind in every situation.

THERE’S A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY ASSOCIATED WITH LAUNCHING A BUSINESS OR BREAKING OUT ON YOUR OWN, HAS THERE EVER BEEN A POINT WHERE YOU FELT OVERWHELMED OR DETERRED BY THE RISKS?

Absolutely. Trying to establish oneself as a young woman in a society where most people associate the word "doctor" with a male figure can sometimes feel like a hopeless endeavor. NUMBER ONE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT OVERCOMING ADVERSITY?

Be creative, not competitive. HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR COMPANY’S SUCCESS?

Much of the personality of Boulder exemplifies the culture my office was founded on: small town living. We wanted to be a business with big city sophistication with a small town feel and Boulder screams that. BEST PIECE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

WHAT WAS YOUR MISSION IN THE OUTSET? HOW HAS IT EVOLVED?

34 million parents currently waste 1 billion hours a year planning activities for their kids—that time could be better spent. Our mission is to unlock potential for kids, families and for small businesses who help enrich our children. CAN YOU NAME THREE TOOLS OR RESOURCES YOU’VE COME TO RELY ON IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY OF CONDUCTING BUSINESS?

Slack, Trello and Intercom. Game-changing ways we run our business, keep it integrated, and mobile and this decreases stress, helps us move fast, and allows us to help customers faster. They completely negate the need for email internally which allows us to have guilt-free, device-free time with family and friends. HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR

RACHAEL SHAYNE CUBSPOT

COMPANY’S SUCCESS?

Boulder is a great place to start a technology business. The candid advice and connections over coffee or during a hike are huge. WHAT WOULD YOU ARGUE IS THE BEST ASPECT OF SELF-EMPLOYMENT?

The multitude of opportunities to be a voice for impact and change, to be a job creator. You get to build what you believe in, and build it in a way you believe in. That’s hugely empowering and is helping shape the future of business. NUMBER ONE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT OVERCOMING ADVERSITY?

The value of persistence.

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOUR IDEA OR CONCEPT FOR LITTLE BARN INDUSTRIES?

Our backgrounds at Apple, music and in tech have taught us that truly innovative and successful products are built with an awareness of the needs, desires, and motivations of the people who use them. Our non-traditional approach to engineering has always been about letting the problem drive the technology, not the other way around. WHAT ROLE WOULD YOU SAY MENTORS HAVE IN ACHIEVING SUCCESS? DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?

I’ve had many mentors over the years and they’ve been wonderful. Great mentors don’t necessarily have answers; rather, they assist one in wayfinding as they move forward. Great mentees empower great mentors through trust and a willingness to at least “try on” their suggestions. DO YOU THINK THERE ARE MORE ROADBLOCKS UP FOR FEMALE

ENTREPRENEURS THAN THEIR MALE COUNTERPARTS?

One big roadblock for female entrepreneurs is VC funding. Less than 3% of venture capital went to women-led companies last year. BEST PIECE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

When making big decisions, be sure you are moving towards something, not running away from something.

THERE’S A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY ASSOCIATED WITH LAUNCHING A BUSINESS OR BREAKING OUT ON YOUR OWN, HAS THERE EVER BEEN A POINT WHERE YOU FELT OVERWHELMED OR DETERRED BY THE RISKS?

In the beginning, I found the ups and downs overwhelming, but now I understand that’s part of being an entrepreneur. NUMBER ONE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT OVERCOMING ADVERSITY?

Production has taught me to become a better communicator. A line in the wrong place or the wrong size buttonhole can create issues in terms of cost overages and missed deadlines. In the beginning, I thought stores we’re primarily judging my work based on design, but I learned quickly that they wanted to ensure that I had my production processes finely tuned. DO YOU THINK THERE ARE MORE ROADBLOCKS UP FOR FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS THAN THEIR MALE COUNTERPARTS?

In the past, I did think it was more difficult for women, at least in the art world, but I don’t think so anymore. The time is ripe for women entrepreneurs and I feel all the obstacles are clearing. Women are supporting one another on many more levels, insuring each other’s success is the key to a better world. BEST PIECE OF PERSONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

The universe is bountiful, be open to receiving. It is just as important as being able to give.

WHAT WAS YOUR MISSION IN THE OUTSET? HOW HAS IT EVOLVED?

My original mission was to be a creative professional that promoted others. My mission has evolved in that I realize I must promote my own brand. I used to make Carin Reich the second priority and now it’s the first. MANY PEOPLE FIND THE IDEA OF BEING THEIR OWN BOSS ATTRACTIVE, HAVE YOU COME ACROSS ANY DOWNSIDES TO SELF-EMPLOYMENT?

Self-employment can be lonely. HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR COMPANY’S SUCCESS?

It is very ‘we’ oriented. I have mostly been a digital artist but now I’m exploring other mediums and I’m excited about what is to come. Ultimately, the Colorado community is supportive and wants to see community members be successful. WHAT WOULD YOU ARGUE IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO NETWORK TODAY?

Find your tribes and immerse yourself in those communities.

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOUR IDEA OR CONCEPT FOR YOUR BUSINESS AND THE WORK YOU DO?

Mara: I have a background as a chef and Willow and I would get together and have “maker” days where we’d experiment with all kinds of yummy things like sausage, cheese, candles and kombucha. We stumbled across these amazing fermented vegetables. The fermented pickles were just so good and we saw a gap in the market for these products and thought to ourselves “why not”. THERE’S A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY ASSOCIATED WITH LAUNCHING A BUSINESS OR BREAKING OUT ON YOUR OWN, HAS THERE EVER BEEN A POINT WHERE YOU FELT OVERWHELMED OR DETERRED BY THE RISKS?

Willow: A new endeavor always has risks and while the food business is not as cutthroat as other businesses, it is still no picnic. I could never have done this by myself. Mara is a calming force and a steady hand. We also have excellent advisors and a stellar board of directors to help us stay on course and not get too overwhelmed. had less confidence (in ourselves and in us) to raise money, it could be a certain conservative nature to make the most of what we have. DO YOU THINK THERE ARE MORE ROADBLOCKS UP FOR FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS THAN THEIR MALE COUNTERPARTS?

Willow: Top female management and female investors are still far fewer than they should be. There are roadblocks but they are also being broken by smart, badass women all the time.

THERE’S A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY ASSOCIATED WITH LAUNCHING A BUSINESS OR BREAKING OUT ON YOUR OWN, HAS THERE EVER BEEN A POINT WHERE YOU FELT OVERWHELMED OR DETERRED BY THE RISKS?

Overwhelmed, yes. Deterred by risks, never. My oldest son has Autism and I believe that nothing in my life will ever be more difficult than that journey. I love learning. I am constantly learning with this business and that keeps me on my toes. WHAT WOULD YOU ARGUE IS THE BEST ASPECT OF SELF-EMPLOYMENT?

The pride that you feel when people are thankful for your service/business. FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE, DO YOU THINK BEING A FEMALE HAS INFLUENCED YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS? WHY OR WHY NOT?

TRAC Y HOBB S ELEANOR AND HOBBS

Absolutely. We have created a community here at Eleanor and Hobbs where most women come to find more than clothing. We have become friends, confidants and sisters. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO NETWORK TODAY?

If you provide good service to your customer and a wonderful place to shop, word of mouth is the most effective way to network. A great outfit and a good experience speaks volumes. BEST PIECE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOUR IDEA OR CONCEPT FOR THE LAW OFFICE OF CARE ENICHEN?

After over 25 years in government jobs, first as a Boulder County Deputy District Attorney and then 16 years as a Boulder County Court Judge, I was ready for a new challenge where I can directly help people. HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR COMPANY’S SUCCESS?

The Boulder Legal Community is remarkably collegial and supportive. As a criminal defense attorney, I still maintain close relationships with Boulder County Prosecutors. We may be adversaries, but we are all seeking fairness and justice. WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A LEADER?

I prefer to see myself as a mentor and a teacher. I enjoy explaining the complexities of a legal concept, or describing court procedures. The legal system is a foreign world to most people. WORK-LIFE BALANCE IS A HOT TOPIC IN BUSINESS THESE DAYS, DO YOU FEEL IT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE? WHY OR WHY NOT?

C ARE ENICHEN THE LAW OFFICE OF CARE ENICHEN, LLC

This is the number one personal challenge of my career. I have frankly never achieved the perfect balance, though it has been easier in the private sector to, for example, be able to work nights or weekends to spend after school time with my family. This is a constant challenge and I am mindful of it every single day.

ducks, and a pack of heritage breed hogs. Managing Mother Nature is no easy task. "Growing up in Upstate New York on a cattle farm and the youngest of six, I have always been around a farm lifestyle and a farm work ethic," says Anne. As the farm manager, Anne's day starts early at 5 a.m. in high season and doesn't end until the planting, weeding and harvesting are fulfilled for 15 restaurants and two farmer's markets. She takes care of valuable crops year-round, makes the crop plans and is also a full-time mother. "I am a mother first, and the rest can wait until I have taken care of those needs," says Anne. Organic food is surprisingly not the main goal of Cure Organic Farms, growing interest in the field of farming is. It's a passion that Anne and her husband Paul strive toward with each season and hope to inspire growth in small-scale farms. "In order for farms and food to become vital and stay vital, you need to normalize it and make it a part of everyday life and make it accessible to everyone. Our Thursdays are dedicated to that with a 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. open door to join us in the fields." As a pioneer and cultivator of farming culture, Anne trains budding agriculturalist who may run their own farm someday. She also holds classes, farm tours, kids camps and internships throughout the year. Anne says, "Our workforce consists of six interns or future farmers. They are the ones who need to learn the trade in a fun environment." "I am proud to say that for 13 years I have grown food for an amazing community that I care deeply for and who has shown my family and me such incredible generosity," says Anne. "My hope for the future is to stay true to the project that Paul and I started which is to help others succeed in the wonderful field of farming."

Open to the public every Saturday from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

For Taber, it sounded like the good life. "My path over the next ten years would lead to apprentice-

ships at other farms, a job at a land trust in California, a cook in a restaurant, teaching yoga, waiting tables, law school, and finally, back to goats." Taber says, "Mountain Flower was born with the assistance,

goodwill and support of Long's Garden and their mission to conserve this unique 100-year old property and keep agriculture alive and well in downtown Boulder." Especially in today's world of concrete jungles, having a

farm minutes from downtown is how Taber and Madelynn, Mountain Flower Dairy's intern turned employee-of-fouryears, turned the dairy into a successful education tool that has a positive impact on the people who visit. The three primary goals for their vision are community engagement and education (check), sustainable agriculture and human husbandry (again, check) and finally, land conservation (check). "We have a goal of a healthy biodiverse and working landscape so that the public can participate in and learn about farming," says Madelynn. "We want to pass down an ethic of agriculture, so farming doesn't become a way of the past, or an industrial machine." Even with this success story of an urban farm, there are still challenges. "Income. There is a tremendous amount of support, goodwill and love – but, honestly, it's hard to keep this farm going year-after-year because we are small and we don't make very much money," says Taber. "Luckily, we have a great board of directors who are working on fundraising and finding innovative ways to supplement our program related income." "This is truly a labor of love. We do it for the animals." CONTINUED >

"I grew up with an appreciation for plants, but not necessarily farming. My love of the natural world led me to study science in college," says Cindy. After following the ‘expected' path of a scientist; graduate school, post-doc position in a lab studying biochemical pathways, Cindy found herself wanting to trade latex gloves for gardening gloves. "I wanted a lifestyle that was more outdoors. I had never considered skincare as a direction, but my love of herbs grew, and as I played with making herbal products I realized that my knowledge of chemistry allowed me to make a more sophisticated and functional skin care product." For ten years Cindy has combined her many skills and interests to create something sustainable and educational. Cindy strives to spread the seed of interest in farming and herbs through her blog, writing for print publications and educating volunteers who help out with her farm. "I hope that there are more small farms that bring back biodiversity rather than monocropping done by large, industrial farms," says Cindy. May 2017 | Boulder Lifestyle

Confer started Wildflower Liberty League, a nonprofit focused on diverse, huggable, lovable and classic dolls. She started small in her home as a self-taught sewer and made her first doll as a Christmas present for her son. Now, her online inventory of dolls sells out in hours. Confer is also passionate about the foster care system and providing better support to all involved. She donates 100% of her profits to foster care charity Together We Rise. By acting on her passions and filling a need, Confer brings diversity to children’s toys and allows them to see their differences as unique, beautiful and accepted.

tepping into Marie-Juliette Bird’s studio, the tack house tucked behind her home; a lavender aroma welcomes you and sunlight floods the floors. At a closer look, a grand piano is perched

in the corner, and delicate crystals hover over the wooden table where her collection of intricate creations lie. There’s something of a fairytale quality about this place. Decorated with flowers and birch trees, it’s not difficult to see where Bird gets her inspiration for her fine jewelry, Blackbird and the Snow. “I think that connection [to nature] comes from growing up in Boulder because that’s very much the ethos here. I know a lot of people who live here feel a real solace and healing in nature,” Bird says.

78

Boulder Lifestyle | May 2017

“That sentimental aspect of jewelry is rewarding.”

“I FEEL LIKE MY JEWELRY IS LIKE WILDERNESS TALISMANS…THE ENVIRONMENT IS SO THREATENED AND UNDERVALUED, AND THIS IS MY WAY OF SHOWING THAT VALUE,” BIRD ADDS. She muses on dancer Martha Graham’s letter to Agnes De Mille: “Because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it…keep the channel open.” “I try to keep my creative channel open,” Bird says. “For me, that means being close to nature, doing yoga and gardening. It’s really clear to me that I want to express the majesty of the natural world in a poetic way.” Of course, the creative process is only a fraction of the work that goes into Blackbird and the Snow. Because this is a onewoman show, Bird functions as both the head and the heart of her company. “When I started, I had no idea all the dimensions of [running a business]. I think I’m stepping more into that entrepreneurial space now because no one is going to swoop in and save me and give my designs to the world. I have to say 'ok, how am I going to do this?'" “People think being a jewelry designer is all about making beautiful things, but the fact is that it’s really expensive. Every piece that I make involves gold and precious stones, and time and labor, so it’s a real commitment to have an idea and bring it to life. May 2017 | Boulder Lifestyle

“[For example] I’ve been working on this butterfly project for five years. To get to the point of technically understanding how an idea will work, it’s a labor of love, and you have to have a lot of patience," says Bird. In addition to the butterfly project, Bird highlights her new 13 Moons line, which features moonstones which change depending on they’re set and what is put behind them. “To me, [the concept] is an amazing metaphor for a feminine quality that’s kind of changeable and mysterious,” she says. With respect to her relationship to nature, Bird uses recycled gold and conflict-free stones and butterfly wings. Unlike most jewelry, which is made using computer assisted design (CAD), all items from Blackbird and the Snow are hand-carved, either out of wax or metal—processes that Bird learned from a master jeweler while living in London— and meticulously hand-set by local artisans. “They’re heirloom pieces that you will have for a lifetime and pass down,” Bird says. Customers can browse Bird’s collection online (BlackbirdandtheSnow.com), or schedule an appointment to meet with her in the studio for a close-up look at its magic. “I enjoy connecting with people and watching someone find a piece that they love." Handling the Levante became more natural and instantaneous due to its heightened responsiveness. I found my ability to drive this car with confidence increasing, quickly. The Levante’s

responsiveness

derives

from the 90 percent of both twin engines’ torque, available in less than 2,000 rpm; making the Levante, one of the most agile SUVs on the road. Easily shifting between the automatic transmissions drive modes (Normal, Sport, Off-Road and I.C.E.) are seamless, despite all 3.3-inches of suspension adjustments. The grip is impeccable within the city. Featuring 50/50 weight distribution and a front suspension comprised of double A-arms, the result is a satisfyingly sporty drive. The effortless feeling of driving the Levante resonates long after the drive is over. Combined weight distribution and fluid maneuvering of the Levante, inclines one to presume that this must be what driving on clouds is, that, and absolute power. The Maserati Levante is the apex, a powerful driving machine that calls for adventure. Italian design resonates not only in the structure of the SUV but throughout the interior as well. Zegna mulberry silk and Italian leather adorn the seats, floor panels, roof lining and sun visors. Design is king here. Combining Italian engineering and the Ermenegildo Zegna interior, a custom line for the Levante, has achieved the pinnacle to which all others aspire. Once you have driven the Levante, you will always take the long way home, that includes a straightaway, tight curves, and maybe another straightaway. I expect after purchasing the Levante, taking a longer route will be the new normal. | | | Test drive today at Sill TerHar Motors, STHMotors.com, 150 Alter St, Broomfield | | | May 2017 | Boulder Lifestyle

BONNIE & THE CLYDES 92

Boulder Lifestyle | May 2017

PIONEERING ROCKY MOUNTAIN COUNTRY SOUL

B

onnie and the Clydes are a self-described “Rocky Mountain Country Soul,” band that has been gaining momentum up and down the Front Range since their start in 2010. “We take elements of country music

and fuse them with our stories, Colorado culture, and a healthy dose of heartfelt wailin’,” says Bonnie Sims, the group’s frontwoman. Awarded Westword Denver’s “Best Country Band,” in both 2013 and 2014 and having played festivals including New West Fest, the Copper Mountain Music Festival, and the Flatwater Folk Festival, as well as a busy schedule of smaller venues, Bonnie and the Clydes, have already made their mark on the Front Range music scene. Growing up in a musical family, Bonnie knew she wanted to be a musician since girlhood. Her father gifted her her first guitar at age twelve, and from there Bonnie went on to attend South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, her home state. It was at South Plains where she met her husband, Taylor Sims, electric guitarist and vocalist for Bonnie and the Clydes. Taylor was already playing professionally with his band, Spring Creek, while Bonnie was finishing music school, but “the minute I graduated, I asked him to marry me, and we moved to Longmont,” Bonnie explains. Taylor had grown up vacationing in Lake City as a kid and had always loved the Rocky Mountains, so Longmont seemed like a natural fit. In what Bonnie describes as a combination of, “luck, fate, and persistence,” Taylor and Bonnie then found Caleb Roberts (bass), Jake Coffin (drums), and Glenn Taylor (pedal steel) to join the group, all of whom help create that irresistible Bonnie and the Clydes energy that truly sets them apart from other country bands. “Our live show is what makes our band special and what wins us fans,” Bonnie explains. “We don’t hold anything back, we have an authentic, tangible connection between the five of us, and the audience responds to that.” This month we had the opportunity to interview Bonnie about her personal style as well as the band’s hopes and dreams. If you haven’t already gotten a chance to experience Bonnie and the Clydes in person, the month of May is the perfect time to do so. They group plays the Estes Park Mountain Music Festival, Boulder Creek Fest, and the Denver Mile High Flea Market.

GUIDE TO BECOMING A #GIRLBOSS TIPS FROM CUBSPOT CEO RACHAEL SHAYNE

R

achael Shayne has got being a #GIRLBOSS on lock. Besides being an expert brand consultant, she is the CEO and Board President of Cubspot, the largest marketplace of camps, tutors, lessons and activities for kids.

Here are Shayne’s top tips that every career-minded woman needs to run her own company, run a meeting and be the leader of her life.

SAY YES! “Brené Brown talks about how courage and comfort don’t coexist. So, to get to this point, it takes a lot of courage and saying yes to things that feel scary,” Shayne says. “Saying yes isn’t always this big thing, it’s often just micro-moments. But those keep forming and informing who you are and what you know that then reveals an open door years down the road, you just don’t know it’s coming.” KNOW YOUR IMPACT. “Understand how to sell your ideas and be conscious of how your body is portraying power,” Shayne advises. “Don’t be the person who walks into a meeting with donuts and coffee--that puts you in an archetype that you don’t want to get stuck in if you want to be a girlboss. Walk in in charge with your shoulders back, do a power pose--control the environment with your body language and people will look at you with respect.” KNOW YOUR FOCUS. A girlboss knows what she wants, which is why Shayne recommends that when leading a meeting, send out an agenda 24 hours prior outlining what the meeting will cover and how long it’s expected to take. “Everyone will come in with better information because they’ve had a chance to think about it. They’ll know what’s coming and you can get the best out of them.” KNOW YOUR TEAM. Being a girlboss doesn’t mean that you have to put up emotional blinders for people to take you seriously. Success comes from connecting with others, Shayne says. “I might have an introvert who would rather send me notes over email beforehand because they’re never going to speak up in the meeting--I know that about them because I care,” Shayne explains. “Give everyone a chance to contribute. If you do everything spur of the moment, you actually leave out half your team.” BUILD EACH OTHER UP. “In this town, there is a bit of an open door policy. Take advantage of those resources and mentorship mentality. It doesn’t have to be this lifelong relationship; it can just be a quick, hey I know you’ve done this before, what do you think of this?” [But] no matter who you are, you can still be a mentor or help somebody. You should always have one hand striving and one behind you to help pull someone else through.” 96
