What makes a home isn’t necessarily the items in that home, but more importantly, the feeling you create within the walls. Harvey Hine gave his clients some great advice when designing their home (see on pg. 52). When the couple wanted to add an extra room on the home, he said, “small homes tend to create close families.” As a child, my parents rarely spent money on cosmetic accents for our home. My mom, however, could bargain shop like nobody’s business. She found an original Knoll chair at the thrift store and only purchased it because she thought it was pretty. In a way, we are all connected to each other by design, and to the past, through the objects in our home. On pg. 50 you can read a little about the history of Harry Bertoia and how the Bertoia chair has not lost it’s popularity since it’s inception in 1952!. While I certainly did not grow up in a lavishly designed home, I grew up in a beautifully loving home. Yes, I love and respect all that involves home design. At the end of the day, what truly matters in our home is the joy and love that resides within.

All brewing is currently done at Prost Brewing in the Denver Highlands by head brewer Brad Landsman. This is quite a contrast from the all Egyptian themed Oasis Boulder location, but “if you build it they will come” is the philosophy that the Oasis-ites live by. This transition is symbolized by the Oasis “mascot,” the god Anubis drinking, of course, a beer. In Egyptian culture, Anubis is known as the guide between life and the afterlife. The resurgence and rebirth of Oasis goes hand in hand with the Anubis figure, a god of transitions and new beginnings. March 2016 | Boulder Lifestyle

that

he shares with his wife Gail is stunning enough to take your breath away. It’s nestled into a hillside on the 35-acre property. Michael’s lifelong passion for design, which has spearheaded the creation of many of Boulder County’s most appealing and sought-after neighborhoods, is evident in every room of the house, inside and out. The home was built in 2007 by Markel Homes under Michael’s direction. Located one mile northwest of Niwot on 73rd Street, it’s only a quick 15 minutes to downtown Boulder even though it seems worlds away. “It feels like you’re living on a ranch, yet we’re within a few minutes of conveniences,” says Michael. The western contemporary house prominently features warm post and beam architectural styling and an open floor plan that allows for effortless movement between spaces. spaces, natural surroundings are hard pressed to go unnoticed. Built with sustainability in mind, the home is energy efficient thanks to foam insulation, a high velocity air conditioning system, passive solar windows, in-floor radiant heat and more. In addition to the picturesque landscape of gardens, grasses, ponds and walking paths, there’s also an assortment of wildlife since the home backs up to over 2000 acres of open space. On a tree just adjacent to the property, Michael and Gail have watched year after year as the same two bald eagles have returned to rebuild their nest and produce eaglets. HARRY BERTOIA AND THE WIRE CHAIRS ARTICLE ANNA SMITH, ANNABODE + CO.

A

nna Smith of Anna Bode Co. has a background in history and decretive arts.

She has let us in on her #designdecoded blog series, in which she dissects iconic objects in design history. This month we’re taking a look at Harry Bertoia and his gorgeous wire chairs. Bertoia was born in Italy in 1915, moved to America as a teenager, and eventually attended Cranbrook Academy where he rubbed elbows with other soon-to-be design bigwigs such as Charles Eames (fiberglass chairs!) and Eero Saarinen (tulip tables!). Cranbrook was kind of a big deal at the time. After finishing his studies he was asked to stay and spearhead the metal workshop, where he made mostly jewelry (metal was scarce during the War). Then he headed over to California with Eames to develop an inexpensive method for molding all those plywood chairs Eames was so crazy about. Unfortunately, Eames pulled a fast one on him when the chairs were finally produced and gave Bertoia zero credit. What! Miffed, Bertoia exchanged the West coast for the East and settled in at Knoll (another

50

important name, in furniture production). The Knolls knew Bertoia was brilliant, and basically told him he could come design whatever he wanted—it didn’t even have to be furniture! They just wanted to see what he could come up with. Bertoia’s line of wire chairs was launched in 1952, and has been in continuous production ever since. Seriously. People haven’t stopped buying these chairs once in the past 60 years! Can you imagine if your sofa was so popular, people were still buying it in 2078? That, my friends, is what they call timeless Okay, okay. What’s the big deal about these chairs? Well for starters, the materials were pretty groundbreaking. Wire mesh chairs don’t seem crazy to us because they’ve been around for half a century, but in Bertoia’s time most chairs were still made of—you guessed it—wood. Yawn. Also, Bertoia’s chairs are sculptural works of art (And guess what? He was a sculptor. Surprise, surprise). He took industrial materials and made them both elegant and beautiful, which is certainly a feat worthy of admiration.

he lines between the past and future are often blurred with today’s design. Modern comes in many different forms and in this case, one Boulder-based family opted to infuse classic modern (mid-century) with 21st century style. Much easier said than done. Nonetheless, the homeowners in the Newlands Neighborhood felt excited to create their very own personalized dream home. As a growing young family, the homeowners wished to preserve the classic lines of the house but, with two small kids, they also wanted a functional and forgiving space. MID-CENTURY RE-MODERN (CON TI N U ED)

The family moved into the home in the spring of 2012 and began construction the next fall with the main goal to improve the flow of the spaces inside and outside, and to enhance the family living. For example, the entire lower level was repurposed specifically for their children to live and play. They also added a see-through indoor/ outdoor fireplace to join the main living spaces inside and out and to create more livable square footage. To keep the mid-century modern idea throughout the home, the family asked for clean lines, like pocket doors instead of swinging doors whenever possible. They also asked CONTINUED >

for actual door knobs mimicking the mid-century style instead of the door levers used today. While the family also envisioned adding more rooms, Harvey Hine, the founding partner and managing principal at HMH, suggested focusing on multi-function rooms instead. For example, the homeowners created two sitting areas in the larger living room and the guest room doubles as a music room. Plus, Hine says small houses tend to create close families. “Additionally, we chose not to have a formal dining room,” the homeowner says. “Our life happens at the kitchen table instead.” In the end, the house feels finished with a centrally located living space where the family spends most of their time. The kitchen, family room, and multi-purpose rooms stay organized with specific design strategies, like a gear storage room on the lower level to keep outdoor equipment in its own space. Modern, clean and colorful, yet livable for a young family, this home epitomizes today's mid-century modern trends.

Stir occasionally. Add in the beets and balsamic vinegar and cover for another seven minutes. Place the rice in the pot and stir for one minute. QUICK TIPS FOR STARTING A CULINARY GARDEN

• It’s all about soil. Compost is key and helps bring your soil into balance as well as having excellent water-holding capacity. Use a well-balanced organic fertilizer as well.

3.

4.

• Looks matter. Just like you choose the freshest looking produce at the market, choose the healthiest looking transplants. You might have your heart set on a Brandywine tomato, but if the plants look spindly they are not going to produce a good crop. 6.

5.

• Water wisely. Use drip irrigation in conjunction with a timer. Drip irrigation is the most efficient way to irrigate your plants because it slowly saturates the soil at the root zone. When we irrigate with overhead sprinklers the water quickly moves through the soil past the root zone and irrigates the weeds as well. 1. Wallaroo SPF 50 Sun Hat, $52.00, Wallaroohats.com 2. POLLINATE YOU COCKTAIL OR MOCKTAIL WITH THESE TWO DIY TECHNIQUES

1. Muddle flowers or herbs to release their fragrance. Place the stemless flowers and any herbs you’re using in the bottom of a cocktail shaker or tall glass with a splash of water (and sugar, if you’d like). Using a muddler or wooden spoon, press down on the flowers and herbs and give a few gentle twists until you start to smell their fragrance. Then, mix in the rest of the drink's ingredients and, if desired, strain the liquid into a serving glass. 2. Make a simple syrup with the flowers. Mix equal parts sugar and water in a sauce pan until the sugar melts. Turn off the heat, add the flowers, let the mixture cool for at least an hour, then strain the liquid. The simple syrup works like honey to sweeten the alcohol of your choice, from vodka to gin. March 24th is national cocktail day. Get a jump start into spring and celebrate by whipping up your own garden to glass cocktail. Give this recipe a try. LAVENDER BEES KNEES

• 2 oz Vapor Gin • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice • 3/4 oz honey lavender simple syrup 1:1 • Garnish with a lemon twist Add all ingredients to your shaker except for the garnish. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lavender sprig and/or a lemon twist. 76

• A piece of wood, about 1.5″ wide & 6.5″ long • White paint (preferably high gloss) • Minwax Polycrylic (again, gloss) • Whatever kind of saw you have on hand • Drill • Leather strip, about .5″ wide & 5″ long • #6 brass finishing washer • #6 3/4 in. brass phillips flat head wood screw • Sander or sandpaper • Paintbrushes, pencil, ruler First, use your pencil and ruler to draw a straight line diagonally across the wood. Saw along the line and sand to a smooth finish. Here’s a tip: if you have a longer length of wood, it’s easier to mark the 6.5″ length and saw the diagonal line before cutting it off the larger piece. Otherwise, you might need a clamp so you don’t saw your fingers off. Use the ruler to mark off a section at the bottom of the wedge and paint it white. Then use the polycrylic to coat the unpainted wood. Do NOT use the polycrylic on the white paint — it will yellow it. Take your leather strip and fold it in half, so that the two ends meet. Using the other scrap half of your wood as a base, drill a small hole through the center of the two ends. This just gives you a nice little place to put your screw. Place your washer over the screw, and attach the new leather handle into the back of the wedge with the drill. Now admire your handiwork.

EXPERT SAYS with real estate wiz Jen Egbert

ECONOMIC TRENDS CONDENSED

ARTICLE JENNIFER EGBERT PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY

R

eal estate market conditions are a very reliable indicator of the overarching economic climate in the United States. When home sales volume and prices are up, every other aspect of the American economy is thriving, as well. In recent months, the U.S. has seen a much higher household formation rate, which is great news for real estate (and the economy, in general). It means that more people are getting jobs, changing lifestyles, and ultimately, have more cash to support all of this. Surprisingly, seniors are leading the way for the creation of new households right now. The baby boomers are moving out of the homes where they raised their families and upgrading to higher-end living. This is a serious driver for the luxury housing market, and it will continue to be for the next few years. Meanwhile, millennials are reluctant to enter the housing market. They saw what happened with previous generations and the overextension of credit, and they are enjoying the freedom and portability of renting. Even so, inventory remains impossibly tight, driving prices higher (while wages lag far behind). In 2016, prices are expected to increase by 4-6% more. If you plan to buy, now is the time. a bit of the travel bug here at the Lifestyle office.

With summer travel plans still a few months

Nederland

away, we decided to treat our symptoms with

303.258.3537

a quick trip out west via Boulder Canyon Drive. Nederland, Colorado is only 17 miles away and with a motto: “life is better up here,” it’s pretty enticing. Hungry and excited we set off for our day in Nederland, a town like no other.

SALTO COFFEE WORKS AND TIN SHED SPORTS

The first order of business had to involve two things: food and coffee. Fortunately for us our first stop was Salto Coffee Works. We were greeted by a clock tower and Tin Shed Sports, a bike and ski shop, making it very clear that this is a gateway to the outdoors. The town is only four miles away from Indian Peaks Wilderness and Eldora Ski Resort. We enjoyed the house-roasted specialty coffee, one Latte and Cortado to be exact, and ordered from their chef-driven and seasonally prepared menu, a creamed carrot soup with a dollop of yogurt, topped off with fresh baked bread. A delicious special of the day. CONTINUED >

NATURE’S OWN

Next stop – shopping. Our eyes dazzled with the sight of a teal building with a huge sign that said, ‘Geodes, Crystals, Fossils, Gemstone, Jewelry.’ What else does a girl need? Since opening in 1986 people have been wandering in amazed by the large selection of nature and science gifts, unique home good items (mortar and pestles, Himalayan salt platters, marble cups) and music from local artists. The mountain music shouldn’t be taken lightly considering this is one of the things Nederland is well known for. NEW MOON BAKERY & CAFÉ

In the center of town is a staple bakery called New Moon Bakery & Café. Baking at 8,240 feet definitely adds that special touch to their fresh croissants, scones and muffins. They have a selection of sweet and savory options but we opted for a sweet mid afternoon snack. We enjoyed the renowned gluten free macaroons and a fresh baked cookie with creamy ganache to compliment our second daily round of lattes. All pastries are made with butter, sugar and real chocolate, apparent with each fresh bite.

The newest eatery addition in town is a pizzeria serving artisan wood fired pizza and craft beer. Ingredients are locally sourced but their specialty copper oven is made from special clay that hail all the way from Provence, France. WILD MOUNTAIN SMOKEHOUSE & BREWERY

There’s no better way to wrap up an adventure-filled day than a flight of brews… on a ski. We got a taste of Wild Mountain’s house brewed beer starting from light to dark. Our personal favorites were the HopDiggity IPA and the Ned Big Red, two picks popular amongst the locals. While sitting at the bar soaking in the day and looking out at the scenic mountain view, we had just enough room to try their world renowned Ned Smoked Chicken Wings (Dozen $12). These aren’t your typical wings. The jumbo wings are slow smoked, tossed with a buffalo sauce and then touched up on the grill. Finger lickin’ good and a sound way to end the day trip.

Nova Chocolate A BEAN TO BAR ENTERPRISE

chieve romantic hero status with small-batch, artisanal chocolate. Lafayette's Nova Chocolate has been churning out tasty, sustainably-sourced goodies since 2011. Originally known as Nova Monda, the company was recently purchased and rebranded by former employee Andrew Starr. Part chef, part food chemist, Starr and his three employees

spend long hours making sure the product is consistent despite the fickle nature of cocao harvesting. Nova's “single origin” products are made with cocoa beans grown in Nicaragua and Ecuador using a direct trade process, which Starr describes as better than fair trade. “We're dealing directly with the source,” Starr says. “The idea is the farmers are getting a good price for their product and we also have them build the infrastructure to do some of the processing.” Instead of a quick export cash crop, the farmers take time to ferment the beans as well as roast them and crack them into “nibs” before shipping to the U.S. In the case of the Ecuadorian chocolate, they also do the first grind of the beans and ship it as “liquor”, the term for pure cocoa in liquid form. “I like the idea of them having more of an industry than just a plant,” Starr says. “We need to make sure that from the moment this is picked off the tree that everybody's taken care of.” Nova's product line is still small, which allows for more exacting quality control. They currently produce five items: three Single Origin Chocolate

Bars with cocao contents of 70%, 75% and 80% ($6); individually wrapped Sea Salt Almond Truff les ($2); and jarred Dark Chocolate Ganache ($10). Large commercial chocolate makers often remove natural cocoa butter and add emulsifiers, flavorings, milk solids and hydrogenated oils, but Nova adds nothing but organic cane sugar. “Nova's idea is ultimate simplicity and focus,” Starr says. “We harvest something great and we don't add anything to it except for that little bit of sugar.” Using very traditional processes of churning and tempering, the chocolate ultimately achieves that perfect snap, shine and flavor. Starr has this process down to the micron and regularly checks the chocolate for the correct sweetness and thickness. Much like coffee, beer and wine before it, the chocolate industry is experiencing an artisanal revolution where handcrafted precision is turning out superior varieties and flavors. Despite a nationwide interest, Starr says there are very few “Bean to Bar” chocolate enterprises in Colorado, making Nova very distinctive. For a memorable treat, Starr recommends the truff les or ganache for “easy eating” but says the Dark Chocolate Bar Trio is a fun tasting experience. Even if you think you don't like dark chocolate, he suggests expanding your palate and giving all three bars a try. “It's like going to a great wine tasting to open your mind.” NovaChocolate.com
