or the first 30 years of my life, I never understood why people claimed the holiday season was stressful. The holidays were all good. Home cooking, watching football, ski trips (apres ski), more football watching - how could THIS be considered stressful? This was utopia if you asked me. My only real task was to hit up a TJ Maxx or Marshall's by December 23rd to grab three simple gifts for my immediate family members. Hold that thought for a moment.

This issue was so enjoyable to put together because of all the local businesses that were involved. There aren't too many places I can think of where, in a five block radius, one has so many locally-curated options for unique holiday gifts. Also featured are some of Boulder's most well-respected event planners that educate on "modern day etiquette" for party hosting. Here's my tip: you know that bottle of White Zin that has been in your garage fridge for two years because someone left it at your house? Don't bring that to a Christmas party. Fast forward from bachelorhood to my first year of marriage. Like clockwork, on December 23rd, I headed to TJ Maxx with a little extra pep in my step. I was going to buy my lovely wife a present for our first Christmas as a married couple. I was only there for a few minutes when I spotted it. Bam. I still remember how it shone under the flickering fluorescent lights. A stainless steel, half-gallon coffee thermos was the winner. So practical, and perfect for any coffee lover.

After opening about five amazing gifts Katie had bought me, I started to get an uneasy feeling in my stomach. The excitement on her face soon turned to a puzzled look as she pulled the thermos out of the box. "This is a joke, right?" My reply, "Uhh, err, uhh. Well honey, I thought this would be great for us to take out on the boat to keep our coffee warm." I was not a bachelor anymore.

By the next winter, we had a baby boy in the mix with a daughter on the way. Year three, yep, you guessed it, another bundtling in the oven. While there isn't as much napping, watching football, and bombing down the mountain with a pack of mad men as there once was, I couldn't be happier. With that I say, let the chaos ensue!

Around Town ANDREA MERRILL NAMED RESIDENT SERVICES COORDINATOR AT GOLDEN WEST COMMUNITIES, INC. Golden West Communities, Inc., has hired Andrea Merrill as Resident Services Coordinator. Merrill will support residents by arranging educational programs and connecting them with supportive services. She will advocate on behalf of residents and their families by coordinating services within and outside Golden West to help residents maintain their independence and quality of life. Previously, Merrill worked as the weekend activities coordinator at Golden West Communities. In that position, she built a strong rapport with both residents and staff that helped her transition smoothly into her new role. Prior to working at Golden West, Merrill worked at the University of Colorado Boulder for 26 years. Because she always had a desire to work with seniors, she returned to school in 2012 to complete her bachelor’s degree in sociology with an emphasis in gerontology. With her passion for helping seniors and her strong ties to CU, Director of Community Relations Heidi Marchi says Merrill is real asset to Golden West and its residents. “Andrea will help us continue to strengthen our relationship with the university and surrounding community to bring enriching programs to our residents,” she says.

Let’s Get Dressed Nod & Rose Storehouse Article Kate Manz Photography Sampson Leung

T

wo years ago, Nod and Elizabeth Rose Norkus packed up their belongings and moved from their hometown of Charlotte, NC, to Boulder. These newlyweds were eager to embark on a new chapter in their lives and careers together. By combining their love for fashion and people they opened Nod and Rose Storehouse, a carefully curated clothing store for men and women in downtown Boulder. “Nod & Rose just makes sense to us,” said, Elizabeth Rose. “It gives us a chance to spend tons of time together and help people look their best.” Very quickly they connected with the community not only for their ability to fuse classic and fashion forward style but also for all the in-house social events they host. Somehow they have managed to create an incredibly warm and inviting environment in the 900 square feet of space they have. Nod even made room for his personal drum set right in the store. “If you’ve ever been in the storehouse it’s obvious we love having a good time, but we also take a lot of pride in shaping the way stylish people dress in this town,” says Elizabeth. The Norkus’ are continually evolving their collection to best fit the Boulder “town and country” lifestyle. “Fashion is really about taste,” says Nod. Some people find one thing they like and never vary, but one of the things that makes us work as a couple is we have very similar taste and it’s always evolving. Whether it’s in music, architecture, art or fashion more times than not, we’re always on the same page.” Nod and Elizabeth are extending their family and welcoming their first baby, London Rose, this winter. They couldn’t be more excited to continue this ever-

changing adventure in the place they now call home. Don’t forget to pay a visit this holiday season to the storehouse. If your timing is right you may just get a free oneman show on the drums by Nod himself!

Lifting Up Our Homeless Youth Article Emily O’Brien

A

ttention Homes, a Boulder-based non-profit, provides opportunities for at-risk youth to step out of homelessness and into a new tomorrow. With incredibly dedicated staff members working with the children 24/7, the positive effects can be profound. Attention Homes offers shelter, community-based living and the teaching of life skills necessary for an independent future. Its original intention when it was founded in 1966 was to provide attention, not detention, for youth in crisis. However, services have evolved from providing safe shelter and basic needs to offering numerous life changing opportunities. All of which allow Attention Homes to deepen its impact on stabilizing a young person’s life. The statistics on homeless youth in Boulder are astounding. According to the 2014 Point in Time Study, on any given night there are 168 youth (ages 13-24) who were either homeless or unstably housed (e.g. couch surfing) in Boulder County. Executive Director Claire Clurman says, “To come to our door requires a tremendous amount of courage. So many are of these young people are trying to overcome significant barriers.” Youth become homeless for a variety of reasons: family conflict, poverty, abuse, neglect, trauma, mental health, substance abuse, LGBTQ or aging out of foster care without sufficient life skills.

“Of all the youth served, 66 percent are from Boulder County,” states Clurman. The end goal is to help teens in crisis become healthy, stable, productive members of our community. PROGRAMS

Attention Homes offers two programs: the Runaway and Homeless Youth program and the Adolescent Residential Care program. The Adolescent Residential Care program prepares young people for success by providing transitional and respite care with sober living and serves abused, neglected and troubled youth ages 12-17 placed through social services. The Runaway and Homeless Youth program is the only teen emergency shelter in the county. It provides street outreach five days a week to build trust and works with schools and local business to raise awareness of available services and to deliver items such as snacks, socks, emergency blankets and ponchos to homeless youth. The goal is not to enable but to empower these vulnerable youth. The drop-in shelter serves up to 40 youth each day and the overnight emergency shelter houses up to 16 people. Shelter clients must be either in school or actively employed, and all are assigned a case manager to define and obtain goals. As the Runaway and Homeless Youth program has become better known, it has continued >

seen an increase in numbers. In 2012, the program served 195 teens and in 2014, they expect to reach close to 800. To help assist, Attention Homes offers specialized services such as in-house and community-based support groups, counseling, safe shelter and family mediation. By having support in-house, it’s able to guarantee youth get the help they so desperately need. In-house family mediation and individual counseling services have reinforced long-lasting connections as well as family reunification. A substance abuse counselor provides on-site mental health assessments, group therapy and individual work. And with an in-house GED teacher, employment counselor and collaborative efforts with more than 70 different community partners to help teach life skills and create connections to trade schools, community colleges and employment opportunities, youth are more apt to continue moving forward to a better and increasingly more stable future. WHOLE COMMUNITY EFFORT

With more than 600 volunteers each year, it’s quite apparent Attention Homes couldn’t accomplish all that it does alone. Clurman states, “We are very fortunate to have diverse funding from the county, city, businesses and private donors. If it weren’t for the individuals and for the partnerships we have, we couldn’t do the work we do.” Volunteers are always welcome and opportunities are listed on its website. Continuing support is crucial for allowing Attention Homes to serve our youth in crisis. And the organization has no plans to slow down anytime soon. In fact, Attention Homes intends to extend its continuum of housing by developing a transitional independent living program for youth in order to support them for longer periods of time. Planning for self-sufficiency while addressing the immediate need is a must for these youth in need. Attention Homes

During the holiday season, community members “adopt” Dreamers & their families to provide gifts to those in need. Families range in size from two to ten members. Each Dreamer submits a “wish list” of gift ideas valued around $30, then a donor is paired with a family & receives the wish list. The Adopt-a-Family program reaches hundreds of Dreamer families throughout Boulder County!

Always in need of volunteers, Harvest of Hope Pantry (HOHP) provides healthy supplemental food to Boulder families and individuals in need of food assistance within a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental environment. Apply to volunteer through its website. Or start a food drive with your friends and neighbors! It doesn’t take much to get the ball rolling on collecting nutritious items for those in need, and the neat part about it is HOHP helps YOU start the food drive by offering assistance with flyers, boxes and it will even pick up your items at the end of the drive.

Boulder County Giving Back Guide Boulder County Community Services

Cornerstone Church

Mentoring Program

Every holiday season, Cornerstone Church in South Boulder challenges people to give back to the community. One way is through its Advent Giving program, which runs from late November to late December. It chooses five projects/non-profits (local & international) and highlights one each week. The challenge is to give more and spend less; all the money collected is divided among these non-profits. The “give” is give more of your time and talents as well as treasure. Local involvement would serve with Bridge House and help kids in poverty with extra educational help. The gift for the education is toward a summer learning opportunity for low-income kids.

Boulder County Community Services Mentoring Program is in need of male mentors to empower youth receiving services through the court system to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential. The program envisions a community in which every youth experiences nurturing one-to-one relationships and community support, which in turn allows each of them to develop into their full potential, capable of making informed, responsible decisions as involved members of our community. Expect an average commitment of three hours per week for 12 months. (Days of the week and times are flexible.) 1777 6th St. Boulder, CO 303.441.4890 abrubacher@bouldercounty.org BoulderCounty.org/family/youth/pages/best.aspx 32

Boulder County Housing & Human Services Boulder County Housing & Human Services’ (BCHC) motto “Hope for the future, Help when you need it” represents its determination to place individual empowerment, family self-sufficiency and safety at the forefront of all its work. It forms partnerships with families by giving them the primary voice in decisions affecting their lives, knowing that support combined with empowerment fosters self-sufficiency. With that in mind, BCHC asks for your aid in supporting low-income clients by making a donation so they can receive gift cards this holiday season. Parents will relish the opportunity to purchase presents for their own children. And teens, disabled, and/or elderly adult clients will have an opportunity to shop for themselves. Concertos in Chocolate

oulder County Chocolatier’s award-winning confections are leaving their mark in the world of chocolate. Who can resist creamy caramels and gourmet truffles bursting with bold flavors and velvety goodness or decadent chocolate bars made with three ingredients: cacoa, sugar and passion? Concertos in Chocolate

Concertos in Chocolate blends new world flavors with old world techniques. Owner Chris Widlar does an immense amount of hand work, including hand decorating with natural colors. After 15 years in the biz, Widlar believes she has settled on the formula for success which rests on the all-important chocolate chosen for the product and unique flavor combinations Concertos uses Luker chocolate which has a strong earthy taste and is all natural and also Cacoa Barry which has a very smooth mouth feel, according to Widlar. Concertos most popular products generally include caramel, particularly salted caramels, turtles and turtle-tots. Consider the Cappuccino Caramel with caramel and espresso on the inside and espresso and finishing salt on the outside. Holiday items include 34

a Rudolph Pop: a reindeer sucker complete with a pink nose, solid chocolate Santas and a 5” tall solid chocolate moose. Concertos also makes truffles, English toffee, s’more bark, crisps, confections and bars, and Widlar says they also offer ready-made or custom gift baskets in every size and price. They do a booming corporate business by creating custom chocolate and labels for companies; including the Stanley Hotel whose custom-printed labels sport images of friendly ghosts. Indulge in one of their masterpieces at their Gunpark Drive shop where visitors can see the entire kitchen and watch product being made. Treats can also be found at Whole Foods and Pharmaca and online orders are carefully packed and shipped throughout the U.S. and Canada. Nova Monda Cacao and Chocolate

Andrew Starr owns award-winning Black Star Chocolates in Denver and recently purchased Nova Monda Cacao and Chocolate in Lafayette. “Nova liked what I did with my Black Star confections and I liked their bars and truffles; the owner was moving on and wanted someone with passion for the business so

I bought it,” says Starr who’s been making confections since he was 10 years old but loves the purity of simple dark chocolate bars. Starr believes Nova Monda’s bars are the ultimate in simplicity and purity as he combines organic cacao with organic cane sugar allowing the subtleties of the cacao to come out. Nova Monda “I care deeply about the people who grow cacao for us and the way it’s grown and harvested,” says Starr whose direct-trade model allows them to source cacao from two shade-grown co-ops in Nicaragua and Ecuador. “We want to be sure the people growing the cacao are building something bigger than just a farm; they’re creating an industry and we talk openly with them about being sustainable,” says Starr. Look for Nova Monda artisan bars in Alfalfa’s and Natural Grocers and bars and Sea Salt Almond Truffles at local independent retailers. Products can also be purchased online and shipped nationally. Other champions include Lemon Soufflé, Raspberry Heart, Mexican Mole with Habanero; Orange Spice Caramel; Lavender and Pomegranate—a rich pomegranate ganache with a cardamom caramel layer. Autorino began in 2008 with the mission to produce the very best chocolates, confections and pastries using honest ingredients and time tested techniques and her Longmont shop is ablaze with confections of every size, variety and color. “Our confections are reminiscent of traditional f lavors. We use Valrhona chocolate from France: If you taste a plain piece of Valrhona dark chocolate and compare it to a similar percentage dark chocolate, you’ll discover the taste has more layers of complexity, more sensation in the mouth and a smooth mouth feel,” says Autorino. Robin Chocolates is also home to a pastry shop with an award-winning pastry chef who makes desserts that don’t let you down. Don’t miss the Salted Caramel Brownies and Salted Caramel Cake or the Caramel Mousse, which won Grand Prize at the Denver Chocolate Festival. And finally, if you’ve never tasted Chocolate Caramel Fleur De Sel, well, it’s worth a trip to Longmont. Check the website for upcoming classes or to order product for nationwide delivery. eTown:

Boulder’s ‘Eco Opry’

Article Kate Manz | Photography Provided

eTown is the brainchild of talented husband-and-wife duo Nick Forster and Helen Suback Forster. Successful performers in their own right, the Forsters each brought their own individual skills and experience as musicians, writers and producers together in 1991. They created a dynamic weekly radio broadcast called ‘eTown.’ The show was loosely modeled on The Grand Ol’ Opry and A Prairie Home Companion, two shows that Nick played often with his band, Hot Rize. The premise is simple: Each week, two top-tier visiting musical artists attract a diverse audience. Through interviews and lively conversation, the message is clear. The importance of creating and maintaining environmentally sustainable and socially aware communities is shared in a way that both informs and inspires listeners to become engaged citizens. “We are about building a community and bringing people together,” says Helen. The show began on the radio in 1991 with a modest 30 stations, but that number soon swelled to close to 300, both across the US and in as far-reaching places as the Phillipines, Canada, Ireland and Guam. These days, eTown is also a podcast globally. 44

Boulder Lifestyle | December 2014

“We wanted to provide a safe haven for listeners to tune into, wherever they were and feel like we were all in it together. And we’ve succeeded,” says Forster. eTown now has its own home in downtown Boulder, eTown Hall. A former church built in the 1920s, eTown Hall is unique to say the least. A multi-purpose multimedia center in the heart of downtown Boulder, and it’s not just home to eTown’s administrative offices either. It’s a world-class live music venue, full-service recording studio and a true community gathering place. The building is certainly the greenest multi-media and performance center in Colorado - and possibly in the world. Events at this vibrant cultural center run the gamut: From recording projects by world-class, nationally known musicians to eTown radio show tapings to comedy nights, chamber music performances, films, play readings, full concert nights, live streaming of debates, lectures and more, the facility is alive and thriving. eTown’s yearly Handmade Songs Series, a new program for young, aspiring songwriters, gives high school students the opportunity to perform and record their own original music. The inau-

gural year of the program was 2013. From 35 entrants, four high school musicians were selected as finalists, chosen by a panel of impartial, unaffiliated judges. The winners were in turn awarded the opportunity to professionally record their original songs in eTown’s state-of-the-art recording studio, with the help of professional engineers and producers. The 2014 program included more schools offering more entrants. The plan is to continue to expand the program, eventually beyond Boulder, growing the opportunity for more and more young writers to have their work - and voices - heard. Nick and Helen have often been heard saying, “We’re in the business of pitching hope.” That’s fitting for this next generation of aspiring artists, and eTown is providing an outlet to let them shine. Today, eTown continues to reach an ever-growing, enthusiastic audience of loyal listeners. Today, eTown is poised to go to the next level as a major media entity and agent for change. Finding ways to utilize its newly completed, energy-efficient eTown Hall to continue stepping up the conversation and dialogue around social and environmental responsibility. All while hosting incredible live pereTown Hall formances from both iconic and ‘rising 1535 Spruce St. star’ musicians.
Boulder, CO 80302 Through all this, the Forsters reeTown.org main happily married, partners in life as well as in this project of passion.

They’re also vibrant members of both their current hometown of Boulder and the greater entertainment community-at-large. Nick is both a sought-after recording producer and a successful performer and songwriter. He is also a member of the award-winning iconic bluegrass band Hot Rize, which just made its latest CD (the band is currently touring behind same). Besides performing on the radio program (as a member of the houseband) and handling her duties as producer, Helen continues to do professional voiceover work and to occasionally perform in concert. It’s incredible what this dynamic power couple has been able to accomplish in the 23 years that eTown has been around. And it’s just the beginning…

GUEST:

DON’T: Overcommit yourself this holiday season The holidays are known for being hectic, from multiple holiday parties to purchasing lists to having your own gatherings, so don’t over commit yourself because that will just stress you out. Plan out which events you are able to attend in advance, and try not to commit to more than 1 event per day. When we overcommit and stress, our body’s immune system gets weaker and we want you healthy and happy during the holidays! DO: Be sure to mingle with new faces When at a holiday party, be sure to mingle with other guests. Even if you don’t know anyone, introduce yourself to the person standing in line next to you at the bar. Being friendly sets the tone of the party and allows others to loosen up. And who knows, you may even make a new friend!

DO: Check the dress code. Holiday parties are time for festive dress and pulling something fun out of the closet. Whether it’s black tie, holiday festive or casual make sure you do a double check. You wouldn’t want to be that person that forgot to check the dress code for the Ugly Sweater party. DON’T: Assume kids are invited. Some holiday parties are kid friendly while others are for adults only. Be a gracious guest and ask the host if it’s not clear on the invitation. You would hate to be the only guest who brought kids in tow when everyone else had found a babysitter for the night.

Host: DO: Be sure to delegate one person to help you at the party You will be extremely busy greeting guests and running around the evening of your party, so be sure to hire someone or ask a friend who is not a guest to be your eyes of the party for the evening. Have this person check on food and beverages throughout the evening and a bit of picking up after guests. This will help you make sure that you are out of the kitchen and mingling with your guests and not stressed during the party. DON’T: Overthink it Often times we are so set on making everything for the party perfect that we go overboard with getting our house ready and agonizing over what to make or serve. Don’t over think it! No matter what your guests will have a great time and appreciate having been invited over for your party. No need to go out and re-design your home, or make everything by hand. Buy pre-made food if needed, or hire a caterer. Just tidy up, but no need to go and get new fixtures and curtains just because you are having some guests!

HOST: DO: Offer some non-alcoholic beverage options or set up Uber

for your guests. With the holiday season being one of festive celebrations and imbibing you want to make sure your guests have safe choices. Some hosts are offering to cover the costs of Uber for their guests. DON’T: Forget to send invitations out well in advance. The holiday season starts ahead of Thanksgiving and goes through Hanukkah, Christmas and New Years. People have many social obligations through the season so your invitation should arrive so your guests have plenty of time to put you on their social calendar.

Jolene Greenbaum Peterson Laurel and Rose/ LaurelAndRose.com GUEST: DO: Be a gracious guest When someone invites you over as a guest, never arrive empty-handed. Not to say that you need to spend a fortune but think of a personal gift that the hosts will enjoy. You can [almost] never go wrong with a bottle of wine but this is an opportunity to think outside the box. Does your host love coffee? Why not snag a bag of locally roasted coffee? Or, maybe your holiday hosts have been hankering for a trip to Italy? continued >

sure you know exactly who is invited to the party. While it may be more comfortable for you to bring your date / partner / spouse, it is not always assumed that they are invited. Don't be scared to ask the host for clarification on the invitation. HOST: DO: Consider dietary restrictions.

Treat them to a cooking class for two or a beautifully packaged bottle of fine Italian olive oil. After the party, make sure to follow up with a thank you note (email is nice, but hand-written is better). DON’T: Assume you get a "Plus One" Often times events are charged on a per person basis, so make

In today's world of gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, etc., it is important to be an educated host. Rather than take it upon yourself to "experiment" with guests' allergies, be a courteous host and ask your guests about any dietary restrictions before they are seated for dinner. With that said, don't feel pressure to prepare a special meal for each person but make sure options are available and guests feel attended to. DON'T: Skimp on the appetizers. Some guests will arrive early, others on time, and many will likely be fashionably late. Stationary food items like a cheese and charcuterie platter are your best friends as you are busy playing bartender, small talker, greeter, table-setter, dishwasher, and more. Encourage your guests loosen up with some self-service wine or bubbles and help them get to know each other over brie and salumi before being seated for dinner.

Skirt Steak & Chimichurri by Chef Hosea Rosenberg

STEAK • 4 cleaned, grass fed beef skirt steaks • 2 cloves garlic, chopped fine • Small handful of fresh thyme, rough chopped • Cracked black pepper, fresh from peppermill • Kosher salt • Olive oil Clean any large fatty pieces off of the steak. Place in ziploc bag with chopped garlic, thyme, lots of pepper and enough olive oil to just coat everything. Let sit for at least 4 hours or overnight. Remove from bag, and salt liberally on each side. Grill on hot charcoal grill for about 4 minutes on each side, or until desired temperature is reached. I recommend medium rare. Allow to rest for about 4 minutes, then slice thinly, across the grain. Check seasoning and add salt if necessary. CHIMICHURRI • 4 cloves garlic • 1 tsp roasted garlic puree (can be made by roasting a whole garlic head in oven for 45min at 325) • 2 bunches parsley • 2 bunches cilantro • 1 cup loose packed basil • 8 stalks green onion • 1 tsp black peppercorns • 2 cups extra virgin olive oil • 2 Tbsp lemon juice • 3 Tbsp sherry vinegar • Kosher salt to taste Place everything but lemon and vinegar in blender. Puree until smooth. Check salt level and add enough to be well seasoned. If puree is very thick, add a little water until thin. Should be consistency of a salad dressing. TO SERVE:

Place sliced steak on large platter and serve with chimichurri sauce on the side and allow diners to “dip” steak into sauce. Homemade Tater Tots

(Yields about 100 tots)

• 5 Yukon Gold Potatoes, peeled and cut in half • 4 Qt Water • 3/4 T Granulated Garlic • 3/4 T Onion Powder • 2 T Salt Place potatoes in large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to rolling boil and boil for 4-5 minutes. Drain water and immediately shred potatoes (recommend using large shredder attachment in food processor). Transfer to large glass bowl and evenly sprinkle with seasonings. Drag knife through potato mixture a few times to 52

Using a #60 scoop (very small metal ice cream scoop) or spoon, measure out onto greased pan. Cool in refrigerator completely. Heat canola oil to 300 degrees. Carefully place each tot in oil and fry for about 2-3 minutes or until just golden. Freeze and store. • 40 Butternut Squash • 5 Yellow Onions • 10 Carrots • 2 Bunches Celery • 1 Tbsp Cinnamon • ½ tsp Cloves, Allspice, Nutmeg, Cardamom • 2 tsp Cayenne • 1 Tbsp Course Black Pepper • 1/8 lb Fresh Sage • 1/8 lb Fresh Thyme • ½ C Brown Sugar • ½ C Honey • 1 lb Butter • 3 Qts Heavy Cream • Salt Cut squash in half, scrape out seeds, and lay cut side up on sheet pan. Place small amounts of butter and brown sugar in holes and sprinkle salt and pepper over tops. Pour water into pan and cover with foil. Roast in convection at 350 degrees until very soft, one hour or more. Take off foil and bake for another 10 minutes until brown on top. Scrape out meat and throw skins away. In large pot, sautee onions, carrots, and celery until soft. Add squash and top with water. Bring to boil and simmer for about half an hour. Add all remaining ingredients and simmer for another half hour. Blend soup and strain through large strainer. Check seasoning and add salt (pepper) as needed. If soup is too thick, add water. If it is too thin, simmer and reduce until thick. Cool.

Home Matters

Keep It Simple: A Primer on Holiday Organizing Article Sheryl Hadley

T

he holidays always take me back to warm memories of my mother’s nanny, Molly. When my grandmother died in 1948, Molly came to Los Angeles from Denmark to look after my mom and her two siblings. She was a true mother to those kids and a grandmother to me. Molly loved everything about Christmas, and I vividly remember the famous Danish currant cookies she baked and gave as gifts. What really makes me remember Molly is when I take out my Christmas boxes and carefully unpack the handmade yarn Santas she gave to my mother before she died. These Old World Danish decorations bring the holiday spirit into my home like nothing else I own. As you start preparing for the holidays with your own traditions and decorations, think of this as the perfect time to get your home or business in order. It’s the end of the year and the perfect time to start out fresh. (There’s a reason January is National Get Organized month!) It doesn’t have to be overwhelmingly complicated, either. Just be methodical as you prep for the season. Organization increases productivity and time management, something we all need more of during this busy season. Most of us have areas where we stash presents during the year. What’s in there? Who is it going to? What do your friends and family really need? The holidays are also an excellent time to think about space planning. That turquoise Kitchen Aid mixer may be perched at the top of your wish list, but do you have room for it in your cupboard? Is the kids’ playroom already overrun with Legos? Carefully consider where new items will go and plan accordingly. To free up space at home, set aside a December Saturday morning where the family purges unwanted items for donation. Get the kids involved and teach them at a young age the value of freely giving to others in need. A good organizational system is a huge benefit at this busy time of year. Let’s face it: by the end of the season we all feel the temptation to simply stuff everything in boxes as quickly as possible and get them out of sight. But our clients know that there are other ways to do this that lessen stress, free up time, and create some welcome ease. Here are a few organizing tips and tricks that keep things simple and make the holidays a breeze: • Keep a stash of “neutral gifts” already wrapped to give to guests who show up with an unexpected gift for you; olive oil chocolate, wine or candles

• The Container Store sells affordable, stackable, see-through boxes in different sizes that will accommodate small items like table decorations and ornaments or larger items like wrapping paper and garlands (segmented wine boxes and cardboard egg cartons also do the trick) • Label all boxes in full capital letters for easy readability • Designate “open first” boxes to streamline your decorating process • If it’s broken, if you hate it, or if you never use it, give it away, donate it, or properly dispose of it • Test light strings before putting them away to make sure everything works; wind light strings around cardboard and stack them in a bin to save you from a detangling nightmare • Shop the after-Christmas sales to get inexpensive lights and decorations for next year Start off the New Year by congratulating yourself on your holiday organizing upgrade, and keep the momentum moving forward as you head into January, the most inspiring month to “Get Organized” of the year. Personalizing Your Party Article Wendy Harriman

I love feathers, and for the holidays it’s great to add a little glam. Most of the time people think of the centerpiece for their table, so I thought it would be fun to hang the center piece and make more room on the table for the delicious food. You could even make this into festive garland for an alternative look. Materials:

• adhesive • paint brush • glitter • twine • scissors • feathers

DIY instructions:

• Use paint brush and paint adhesive on the tips of the feathers • Dip the tip of the feathers into a bowl of glitter, let dry • Cut twine at different lengths depending on how you want to hang it • Wrap around the spine of the feathers • Tie knot at the top • Then tie the other end of the twine to whatever you have hanging above your table or use as garland and string anywhere! e make thousands of decisions every day, from what kind of coffee we are going to order at our favorite local shop, to what kind of delicious foods we feel like eating that day. Not every decision we make throughout the day is life changing. Then there are those decisions that we choose to make that leave a lasting impact on people’s lives. Meet Connie Minden, the founder of Boulder Treasures, who made a decision to brilliantly merge fashion with changing lives. “As a parent of an adult daughter with developmental disabilities, we became aware of a need in Colorado that was mind-blowing,” Connie says. “Research shows that 85 percent of adults with developmental disabilities were unemployed and didn’t have the professional skills they needed to secure meaningful employment. It’s a national problem. “I was at Expand a few years ago, a rec-

talk about what they did during the day. I quickly realized many of them had nothing to do besides play video games, watch movies and wait for recreational program to begin. It broke my heart and I was inspired to figure out a way to bring real change right here in our community.” And she did. After attending a women’s retreat, she felt moved to answer the call to make the next chapter of her life all about paving the way for adults with disabilities to show local employers what they have to contribute to businesses in our community. That with a little encouragement and coaching, these adults have the skills and hard work ethic needed to be long-term employees at any company they are qualified to pursue. “I felt compelled to stop complaining and rather than dwell on the barriers, I decided to find a solution,” Connie explains. That’s when her and her husband felt moved to start a non-profit called Boulder Treasures. “One of the biggest reasons we were able to get off the ground and create a high-end store and sell our items at such a great discount is because of the

generosity of local company’s like Krimson Klover, Icelandic Design, Sherpani and Skirt Sports who jumped right on board and so generously believed in our mission,” Connie says. With the help and support of many people and organizations, the doors of Ramble on Pearl opened up August 15t, 2014. When you walk in, you are blown away by the professionalism of the employees and the creativity of the store. But it’s more than just “boutique style” outlet offering year-‐round access to premium quality active lifestyle clothing and accessories at an attractive price. You are a part of something so much bigger. “We want people to walk in a experience the gift these incredible individuals bring as they work towards pursuing the job of their dreams,” she says. They provide job placement services to help their apprentices secure longterm employment. The individuals in the apprentice program also get paid, which is a rarity. The way that they have combined fashion with purpose is one of the reasons why it’s becoming one of Boulder’s iconic shopping destinations. It is something that every person should experience. This holiday season, add stopping by Ramble on Pearl to your list of places to check out. If you time it right, you will meet Kate and Kendra who both dream of working with animals one day soon. It’s so encouraging to know that you can shop savvy and change a life. Styles aren’t made to last…but our decision to change a life always will.

5 Rules of Holiday Etiquette You Can Skip Teaching (Not Bother to Teach?) Your Children Article Ellen Nordberg

O

ver the course of twelve Decembers trying to instill Emily Post-worthy behavior in my identical twin boys, I’ve seen many of my holiday manners tutorials come back to bite me. Here are my top five lessons to avoid: 5. Answer the Door to Grown Ups Like a Big Boy. You will tell your child to first identify the person at the door. You will instruct him to shake hands and look the visitor in the eye, greeting them appropriately, like: “Hello, Mr. Claus,” or “Nice to see you, Mrs. Kravits.” This may result in you exiting the shower one afternoon to hear the doorbell, and then the sound of your least social neighbors inviting your family to their Super Bowl party. Trapped in a tiny towel, you will overhear your son’s response: “Thank you so much Mr. and Mrs. Sherman, but we have so many other friends and party invitations, I don’t think we’ll make it!” 4. Always Write Thank You Notes. With your grandmother’s long ago expectations in mind, you will encourage your children to create pieces of art, adorned with elf hat wearing alligators, and charmingly misspelled words. They will be so enthusiastic about expressing gratitude, they will hand deliver notes as fast as they can write them. This will backfire when they make a delivery to the neighborhood Debbie Fields holiday baker, expressing appreciation for her cheesecake, and informing her that they did not sample it because you told them “it was gross.” 3. Tidy Up Before Hosting Guests. Your boys will be taught to pick up their Legos, tuck away their trains, and place balls in their baskets. But even on a day with flying pigs, this will not happen. Ten minutes before your party you will scream at them

in a Wizard of Oz witch voice, chuck every toy they own into your husband’s office, then lock the door and wrap it with festive yellow caution tape. 2. Sit Quietly with Hands Folded in Lap During Church. Your children will learn to sit on opposite sides of their father, silently coloring the Poinsettias on the program, or counting the stained glass windows. They will be still briefly. This this will explode one Christmas Eve, partway through the Nativity Pageant. One of your boys will shout, “You know what this show needs?” to the horror of the priest and your mother-in-law, and the delight of all parents within ear shot. “It needs some sheep!” 1. Behave Appropriately While Holiday Shopping. Your own mother didn’t include little ones in tree trimming, so you will enthusiastically escort your boys into a crowded Sur La Table store in December, instructing them to calmly select an ornament of their choice. While you smugly examine table runners, congratulating yourself on superior holiday parenting, one boy will call loudly across the crowd from the rear of the store. “Mom! Hey Mom!” he will say. “This one looks like a margarita glass. We should get it for you. You love margaritas!” Despite these failures, I refuse to stop teaching manners to my children. But we may need to email our thank you messages, keep the door locked, and start shoveling neighbors’ driveways for free. Read more by Ellen at ellen@ellennordberg.com.
