armony Larke, art director at The Art Underground, fills us in on the exciting new building plans for Louisville’s very own “Art Village.” The Art Underground is a non-profit organization that offers classes and programs in theatre, dance and various visual art mediums for all ages. Larke has been teaching art in the Boulder area for more than 20 years and operated 27 art camps throughout Boulder County last summer. The new building development – dubbed an “Arts Village” - is the result of collaboration between Boulder County and a couple of Louisville arts organizations. The “Art Village” will have a 210-seat theatre, studios, galleries and living spaces for low-income residents. One of the most unique aspects of the building will be the addition of a full-time, year round, art-based preschool, which is set to open in 2016. The preschool is private, but it will also allow for a percentage of low-income families to enroll each year. “The preschool will be hands-on, allowing kids to work at their own pace and get messy. We will explore with all different kinds of materials and mediums. The kids will have a masterpiece to take home and share every day,” explains Larke. The Art Underground focuses on sharing the best and most beneficial aspects of the arts by providing quality instructors, age appropriate instruction, constant curriculum development, real audiences and a commitment to nurturing creativity. Check TAU’s website for upcoming performances, one day classes for kids during spring break and summer camp schedules.
