Lifestyle Letter

Happiest of Hols Alpharetta,

I

t snowed November 4 in Northern Michigan, dusting my old stomping grounds with the promise of the December holidays. Here in Atlanta, I look for fresh magnolia branches tied with red gingham ribbon and outdoor pots puffed up with red dogwood, vine balls, pine boughs, bittersweet, purple pansies, Redbor kale and cabbages to signal the coming of my favorite holiday season. I scavenged for some giant pine cones on a recent trip to Hilton Head and will dot my Christmas decor with them, remembering when my mom brought me a basket of the huge pine cones she found in the yard of her and my step-dad’s place there.

Forty years earlier, she and I filled paper grocery bags with tiny versions (these mini pine cones were no bigger than a thumbnail) for a Girl Scout project. We saved tuna cans all year and my dad painted them matte black at his shop. Then, we used epoxy to glue 1” pieces of 3/4” copper pipe that he’d cut for us, into the center of the cans to hold a red taper candle. My fellow scouts and I glued the tiny pine cones onto the outside of the little cans, tied together two candles (probably with red gingham ribbon) and voila - gifts for our mothers. We had those pine cone candle holders for years and I’m sure families in our hometown did, too.  This year, I’ll visit the wholesale florist with my dear friend Sean O’Keefe and chose bundles of fresh flowers that call out to me. My two daughters will spread them out on the kitchen table, collecting every vase and vessel in the house and arrange the blooms for every room.  I’d say it’s a tradition. It’s our second year doing this, so yes, it’s our new tradition. It’s never too late to start making new holiday memories.  I’m so nostalgic. Especially at this time of year. Happy Holidays!

your passion and your purpose for helping others, whether it is animals, humans, the environment, whatever - the returns are tenfold what you put in when you give freely and with love. Krysta is a bubbly and extremely funny mom to two foster dogs, works full-time and puts in countless hours with Angels Among Us as the CFO. You can find her every week visiting local animal shelters, advocating for animals in need, fundraising, fostering, and educating the public about the plight of animals. “It’s something that I am extremely excited to have the honor to do. I love working with people to find the perfect pet to complete their family,” she says. Family Promise ONE THING TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE: If everyone could do 1 or 2 things locally

each month to help the community, it would make a huge difference. Living in an affluent area, people don’t think there is need nearby. It’s all around us. Ask how you can help. And get your kids started young helping others. It helps keep them very grounded. We dare you not find yourself laughing around Howard, because this giver is witty, funny, and warm.  The family man has dedicated his life to his three children’s gifts and talents, while teaching them to share their talents and resources with their community and world. Even though Howard owns and runs a content marketing agency, he finds time to volunteer in quite a few capacities. Some of his favorites include HomeStretch,  guiding working homeless families in north metro Atlanta with minor children toward increased self-reliance and stability by providing education, mentoring, and supportive housing.  He and his wife Canita help with the Family Promise program through their church. During the year, they host several homeless families providing a place to sleep, meals, and daycare so that parents can go to work each day. Howard says “My wife, kids and I usually prepare and share the meals. We love that our kids get to spend time with these kids while they are with us. It helps normalize their lives while they are living a very non-normal life growing up where we live.”  When not working or volunteering, Howard loves going with his family to music or theater events – especially small or local productions. 22

everyone in the world to have 2020 hearing. Spend just a few minutes with the incredibly kind and endearing Jack McConnell, and you’ll almost forget he a high school student. He has an old soul and has founded the impressive 2020 Hearing charity. He has used his hearing loss to fuel his passion.  It’s a local, national, and international organization aimed at providing support for kids and teens with hearing loss. He works with GA Bell Teen Advocate, and  has supported the Pediatric Hearing Aid Coverage Law (private Insurance companies in Georgia were mandated to cover  pediatric  hearing aids).  Jack travels throughout the U.S. speaking about the international work they do with  the Starkey Hearing Foundation and educate people on hearing loss and the importance of early intervention. “When you fit someone with a  hearing aid, their faces light up, and they are smiling, dancing, and praising because they can hear. It goes way beyond giving the gift of hearing, it allows these kids to go to school, the parents to provide for their families, people can now hear their family say ‘I love you’ for the first

Road Trip

sanctuary AT THE BEACH

ARTICLE KARYN SLOVIN | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF NEWMAN-DAILEY

I

t was a very stormy ride with frightening threats of tornadoes in Alabama on my way to the Gulf Coast and the oasis awaiting me there.

As I arrived in South Walton, Florida, miraculously, the dark clouds parted as if to welcome me. Pulling into the gated property of Sanctuary at Redfish in Santa Rosa Beach, I knew the drive was worth it.  This Newman-Dailey Resort property is a private refuge  on Big Redfish Lake, beautifully tucked away from the usual beach antics. My large condo balcony overlooked the gorgeous expanse of pools, spas and private bungalows lining the pool deck, the ocean beach visible just across the lake.  Excited to check out the grounds and the beach, I walked out past the pool to the dock, where Captain Bob takes guests on a quick pontoon ride across Big Redfish Lake to the beach. Within minutes, we pulled up to an inlet on the crystal white sand and just like that, I was able to enjoy the stunning aqua water of the Gulf. Sanctuary at Redfish guests find an array of amenities and excursions available. First up for me, an art class at The Shard Shop located among a bunch of adorable little galleries in Santa Rosa. Guests pick out a canvas to decorate with a palette of glass pieces of every shape, size and color along with all sorts of glass embellishments. The next day, the artist (you!) picks up her masterpiece, sealed in resin for a permanent shine. On my second day, I made my way to the Boathouse at Watercolor where I was met by two instructors at Run/SUP to do a little paddle boarding at Western Lake. Run/Sup is the newest interval style workout that combines running with stand-up paddle boarding. They also use an inflatable paddle board which is thicker and wider for extra stability. If interval training is not your thing, they also hold SUP/Yoga classes for those that prefer a more zen-like water experience.  Dinner that evening was less than a mile down scenic Highway 30A at Trebeache in Blue Mountain Beach, a pretty place to relax and have a good conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed succulent scallops

and potato wrapped grouper atop tender asparagus. For dessert, I would recommend their pistachio creme brûlée. The final planned excursion, which Newman-Dailey recently began offering, was a guided morning trail ride at Arnetts Gulfside Trail Rides. Guests are given safety riding tips and placed on size-appropriate horses, and yes, kids are welcome. Then the trail boss takes the group of riders through the forest pointing out local foliage and facts about the terrain along the way. The horses were well trained and knew the trail, so even if you've never been on a horse before, this would be an enjoyable experience.  Also on tap for the day--a bike ride up 30A for a little exercise before another delicious meal. The shiny new bikes from Big Fish Bike Rental are delivered to your condo.  I loved the vintage style beach cruisers with the large padded seats and old-style brakes which reminded me of the bicycle I had when I was a kid.  After a full day of activity, I was ready for dinner at Vue on 30A. The name says it all: fine dining with the most glorious view of the Gulf. I enjoyed the refreshing watermelon and feta salad with raspberry vinaigrette, and the pecan crusted grouper atop risotto is a winning dish. If you're ready to plan a fun and relaxing vacation for your family, or a romantic getaway, I recommend visiting Sanctuary at Redfish for a more secluded, unique beach destination. We thoroughly enjoyed all the activities that Newman-Dailey organized; there’s so much to do in South Walton in addition to lounging on the gorgeous white sand ocean beach.
