HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO LIFESTYLE!

I

find it hard to believe that Lifestyle is five years old! So much has changed from us sitting round a table at MMS Almac in Elgin, in summer 2016, deciding on a name. Launching the first issue in October 2016 to now, here we are in 2021; it has been an eventful but amazing 5 years. Lifestyle started its life at MMS Almac in Keith where Colin Brown MD had discussed with me over many years his desire to produce a magazine “that people actually want to read.” Colin wanted me to come on board to sell the advertising, as basically the one with the ‘gift of the gab’ and I thought it sounded like fun. Who knew five years later Lifestyle would be my magazine. I’m not too sure if I should be grateful to Colin or not. If I had known all that I had in front of me over these five years I might have made a different decision but then we wouldn’t have the fabulous Lifestyle that we now have. I love hearing from you my reade; the messages I receive when you enter the competitions are wonderful and I do really appreciate every one.

4

We have had some amazing prizes offered from my wonderful advertisers to offer to you, my loyal readers, over the years.

June Jack

Unfortunately, I am really bad at asking you all to give me feedback on your experience when you receive your prizes, be it a beauty treatment, afternoon tea or gift voucher. I did recently remember to ask two readers for some feedback and they very kindly obliged. June Jack from Craigellachie was the lucky winner of the £100 shopping voucher from Timeless Fashion Boutique at Logie Steading. June was thrilled with her voucher when I spoke to her on the phone, in fact she remembered it

was something like £25 which she was pleased about but when I reminded her it was for £100 she was over the moon. June went along to Logie Steading in August and was very well treated by the owner Christine. It was June’s 40th wedding anniversary in September so hubby was happy to put some money towards the purchase and June was delighted to come away with a beautiful classic trench coat. June has been through a hard time recently having just finished chemo so we are so pleased to have been able to brighten her day. We wish her well NEOS 2021 in her recovery. 7. Art in the Buchat

NEOS was one of the few events that managed to successfully continue through lockdown last year and they are very grateful to everyone who visited the many artisans across the North East.

North East Open Studios (NEOS) was

established in 2003 by a small group of Artists and Makers. They wanted to bring the, largely unknown, vast collection of artistic talent to the general public. NEOS was born and in the first year 2004 67 different artisans took part.

Lorna Zoe D Ceramics Ewen from Ladysbridge, Banff was the lucky winner of the £50 NEOS voucher and kindly sent me some feedback and pictures.

This, their 18th year, they are once again offering an amazing array of talented artisans across

the North East in various venues. You will find some at home or in their own studios and others collaborating together at joint venues. 252

With 250 NEOS members participating this year there is no shortage of artists from all disciplines to explore. With some members grouping together you can find from two, to possibly six, all in one place, what a delight.

To help you find these wonderful people there is, as always, the famous yellow book available. There are copies available to pick up from various venues across the North East or you can download a copy. With a google map to help you plan your trips you have a wonderful time ahead of you. Of course watch out for the yellow signs as you drive around you’re sure to find a few on your own doorstep. Research online, in the Yellow book or on social media to find out as much as you can to plan who you would like to visit. I don’t think you will manage all 250 but have fun trying. Please participate in the visitor’s survey you might win £100 or £50 and for another chance to win £50 also enter the Lifestyle competition on page 60 Whatever you do, enjoy visiting these wonderful talented people, they will be delighted to see you.

Fiona Duckett, owner of Watergaw Ceramics and NEOS Chairwoman commented, “It was super that Lorna decided to spend her NEOS voucher with me but it was a double win as although she lives locally she didn’t realise I was so close and open all year. Thank you Lifestyle and NEOS.”

hose of us fortunate to live in Lossie share a secret. We know just how much there is to see and do in and around the town, even though we can’t get to the East Beach just now.

But we can’t afford to keep this secret to ourselves. According to a recent study, commissioned by the Lossiemouth Business

Association, the loss of the East Beach Bridge cost the town £1.5m in lost revenue, and that was before Covid came into the equation.

Something needed to

be done!

In December, the LBA won a £5k grant from the Scotland Loves Local fund, for a campaign to highlight all the fabulous things there are to do here, to encourage people to come to Lossie and spend a whole day here.

Masterminded by local marketer, Alison Read, the campaign is based around a series of suggested itineraries for local day trippers to make the most of their visit and enjoy ‘A Fine Day Out’!

For example, how about A Family Day Out full of ice creams, play parks and rockpools? Or A Natural Day Out spotting ospreys and dolphins? Or perhaps afternoon tea and a stroll round the shops on A Leisurely Day Out is more your style? A visit to Moray’s zero waste refill shop The Re:store is a must. Shop, dine and unwind at Marina Quay with a wonderful outlook, browse the wonderful collections at MY ladies boutique then maybe pair with beautiful glasses or sunglasses from McClintock’s Optical Styling Boutique. If it’s that special day you are shopping for then you must book a visit to With this Dress, you will be treated like a princess.

Younger Day Spa Ltd will ensure you are pampered from head to toe too.

The guests or Mother of the Bride are well catered for at Unique along by the promenade. Your appetite is well catered for too, choose to sit out on the promenade at the Salt Cellar for lunch or evening meal, with seafood to die for. If you need to work up that appetite then a surfing lesson from Donald at the New Wave Surf School might just do the trick.

If golf’s your game then play a round at Moray Golf Club then sit and enjoy an equally stunning view from the Golf View Hotel on the outskirts of town, check out facebook for their menu and pictures of fabulous looking desserts. A fabulous photography

I’m not going to lie, it has been really tough this last eighteen months but we are still here. I know a lot of businesses have suffered and Lifestyle has tried to be there to help where it could and I have appreciated the help we received from other business be it by their loyalty continuing to advertise or the help in distributing the magazine when lockdown made life difficult for us all. Would also like to say a massive thank you to Eve my graphic designer who is the only one I’m going to name but I do want to thank every single person that helps me get Lifestyle out issue after issue, you know who you are. LOCAL MATTERS

Shop Local, Support Local

T

his is the message that has been ringing in our ears a lot lately but we can’t say it often enough.

Lifestyle put out this same message last year in the Oct/Nov issue and because of the COVID situation in the country nobody really had much option although obviously online sales have impacted, but we asked you to leave the mouse alone and visit your High St. But shopping local was not just for COVID the local shops and businesses that were able to benefit from the ‘COVID boom’ were, I’m sure, delighted but many were unable to open and are only starting the recovery and they need your help. I think I’m right in saying that everyone felt a lot more of the ‘Community Spirit’ during COVID. COVID obviously had many bad effects and we don’t want to ever go through eighteen months like we just have again. But there were some good things came out of the COVID situation and I for one hope we hang on to these good bits for more than a fleeting moment.

We may have appreciated what we had on our own doorstep more as many took time out walking around our beautiful countryside. Tracy goes outside is a prime example of this. We certainly were lucky in that respect to live in such a beautiful part of the country that lockdown was not the hardship it could have been, say in the centre of a large city. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying it was easy for everyone, definitely

not, and I am well aware the isolation felt by many was an immense hardship and impacted greatly on the mental health of many, not least our elderly. We are now hopefully on the right path and at least this Christmas we can all see our friends and loved ones with no restrictions in place. So when you are thinking about what to buy for Granny, Aunty Jean or Cousin John please check out what is on offer in your local shops. There is an abundance of independent retailers on our High St where I am sue you can find mostly everything you could possibly need.

NETWORKING WITH A DIFFERENCE

BNI

(Business Network International) Moray is holding a Virtual Visitors day on the 29th October.

This is a completely free and no obligation event. Unfortunately you have to provide your own tea, coffee and butteries on this occasion.

BNI is the world’s leading business referral organisation with over 280,000 members across 10,000 BNI Chapters worldwide.

BNI continued to meet virtually throughout lockdown and therefore continued to stay connected to keep networking and passing referrals, which then lead to new business and generate revenue.

The BNI Moray Chapter is acutely aware of the tough time many businesses have had since last March. They would like the opportunity to share with as many businesses as possible what they can do to help with the recovery. The 29th October is their visitors’ day and is very much focused on supporting local.

The Moray BNI Chapter decided that going forward their weekly meetings will continue to be held virtually. This opens up the opportunity to join their meetings to a much wider audience.

This is the opportunity for any businesses in Moray to come along ‘virtually’ and see what BNI is all about and how it can help your business. Every business that attends will be given a 60sec pitch to tell all other attendees about their business and what help they need just now, be it to recover or indeed to grow their business.

BNI Moray supporting local businesses You no longer need to worry about organising a hundred and one things before you have to travel to Elgin for 6-45am on a Friday morning. You now just need to either connect from home or your desk at work. This means less time taken out of your working day. If you would like more information about the Visitors Day or BNI or you want to book a place contact either of the Visitor Hosts: Stuart Mason: stuart@hereshowto.co.uk or

Graeme Schmidt - Managing Director, Pathway Commercial Finance. Sourcing funding for property investors, developers, and businesses said: “I enjoyed my BNI visit immensely and definitely intend joining. I was really impressed with the warm welcome and the energy on the call, especially considering the time of day! The Moray BNI, from what I can see, is certainly full of driven and ambitious business owners and that excites me. A chapter really is only as strong as its members. I’ve already had a couple of calls with members that reached out because they are keen to work with local people and that speaks volumes.”

JOIN US FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME AND SEE AND EXPERIENCE HOW WE REFER BUSINESS TO EACH OTHER Joanne McCallum from Adder Business Solutions said: “Adder Business Solutions is a full service marketing agency specialising in websites and lots more! When the opportunity arose to become a member of BNI Moray we were delighted as it’s always been an area we would like to explore. I attended a couple of visitor sessions, met a few of the members and without further ado was delighted to sign up. Everyone was very friendly, welcoming and happy to answer any questions. I am really looking forward to getting to know the chapter better and feel it will be brilliant for lots of future opportunities.” 15

EVENTS

2020 and even 2021 for the most part has decimated the events calendars and one of the casualties was the Christmas Markets but they are back. Lifestyle is delighted to let you know that The Buckie Kracker and Aberlour Christmas Markets are going ahead this year. Buckie Christmas Kracker and Light Switch on is back for 2021 and the committee are looking forward to bringing the Christmas spirit to Buckie once again on Saturday 20th November The day will kick off at approx 10am with lots to see and do for all of the family; our Santa Fun and Fun Dog show are back along with our marquee full of local crafters and businesses with even more lining East and West Church Street. Santa will of course be in his grotto and can’t wait to see all the boys and girls and hear their

Christmas wish lists. For those little ones who go all shy he will have his postbox close by where they can post their letter of wishes (All children will receive a personalised letter back providing an address is provided). Paul T will be back on the stage providing festive tunes and lots of entertainment throughout the day. The funfair is back with rides for all ages to enjoy, along with our many catering vans and don’t forget to look out for our mascots who will be walking about and having fun with all of the children. Our day will come to an end when Buckie’s fantastic Christmas Light Display is switched on at approx 5pm.

Please follow us on Facebook where there will be lots of information posted and keep your eyes peeled for some competitions that we will be running from the page. Come along and enjoy a fun-filled family day out at the Kracker whilst also supporting the many small local businesses that the town is lucky to have. Aberlour and Speyside Rotary Christmas Market are keeping everything crossed that 2021 will allow things to return to normality as they are really looking forward to having the opportunity to meet with friends and enjoying some locally created fabulous gift shopping. There will be the usual stalls from local artisans and businesses with lots on offer to eat and drink too. So pop along and show your support.

The market is run by the Aberlour and Speyside Rotary who would be delighted to welcome new members. The Rotary do excellent work in the community and have pointed out some reasons you may like to join. In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905. Rotary is fun, a lot of fun. Every Rotarian wears a pin that says “Rotary International.” Every Rotarian is welcome – even encouraged – to attend any of the 33,000 clubs in over 200 nations and geographical regions. This means instant friends in both one’s own community and in the world community.

Aberlour and Speyside Rotary Club Aberlour Christmas Market is on Friday and Saturday 3rd and 4th December from 4-8pm and 10-2pm.

I

f you’ve been following along with this series, you’ll have had a good go at your clothes, your books and your papers, and now it’s time to move on to the more miscellaneous categories. I like to start with toiletries and make up here as they can often be fairly satisfying categories.

34

Toiletries Toiletries are anything used to keep yourself clean and fresh. Items like shower gel, shampoo, sanitary products, deodorant, moisturiser, face scrubs, lip balms, body wash, shampoo and conditioner fall into this category. Collect all of them into one place and put them into categories.

Images: Laura Walter Photography

The two questions I like to ask in this category are:1. “Is this something you use?” 2. “How long has it been open?” The number of unused products that fill bathrooms is amazing. Perhaps you bought it and tried it once, then realised that you didn’t get along with it. Perhaps it was a gift and it’s not something that you would use, but you haven’t liked to get rid of it. Whatever the reason, if you don’t use something, it should not be taking up vital space in your home. The second thing to consider is how long a product has been open. Many products have a time frame within which they should be used once opened. Often this can be a safety issue: for example, sunscreen starts to degrade once it is opened and using sunscreen that has been opened too long

could lead to skin damage. Sometimes bacteria can grow in opened bottles and then will be transferred to your skin when you use the product, and sometimes, the product simply isn’t as effective or doesn’t smell as good if it has been open too long. If you have several products that you use, but don’t use fast enough to get through within the use by time frame, consider buying smaller sizes in the future.

and then take a good look at it. Which of those items are your favourites? Those are the ones you want to keep. Let go of the others, even those that cost a lot of money, but you don’t use because they weren’t right. You may not want to let them go because they were expensive, but you’re not going to get your money back with them sitting in your toiletry bag! Take it as a lesson learned.

Once you have been through your toiletries, give some thought to future use on the theme of sustainability. There are some very simple swaps that you can make, such as replacing plastic toothbrushes with bamboo ones, going with products that have less packaging such as shampoo bars, or changing your brand of toilet paper to a more sustainable one. There are lots of companies offering these kinds of sustainable products now and many donate part of their profits to charitable enterprises, such as those that help build toilets for those who don’t have them.

The other thing to remember is that, like toiletries, many items of make-up have a use by date on them and it is important to discard them once they have been open longer than this date. They can grow some quite nasty bacteria on them, so it’s important to let them go, especially as they are being used on your face and near your eyes. Like the toiletries, consider keeping a permanent marker with them so that you can label when they were opened and know when you should discard them if you use them infrequently.

These small changes won’t save the planet on their own, but zero waste is not about one person doing it perfectly, it’s about everyone making changes. Don’t be afraid to make small changes because you are worried about not being able to make the bigger ones. Cosmetics Onto cosmetics! As with every other category we cover, your end result will look very different from the next person’s. There is no right number for this, only the right number for you. Start by collecting all your make up supplies together. This might mean rooting it out of handbags, travel bags, the bathroom, the hallway, your bedroom, the car etc. Categorise it

TRACY GOES OUTSIDE

The Bin of Cullen

This walk from Tracy takes her about 10 miles from her home in Keith towards Cullen. Tracy undertakes lovely walks all over our beautiful country and we are delighted she has agreed to provide Lifestyle readers with the inside knowledge that she has gleaned from her many adventures. I hope you enjoy Tracy’s walks? Please do let us know and send us some photos. Follow Tracy goes outside on Facebook (www.facebook.com/tracygoesoutside)

Distance: 3.5 miles Time: 1.5-2 hours Level: Easy with some elevation Terrain: Well-trodden forestry track. The path is suitable for an off-road buggy.

38

Access: Arrive by car. To reach the start of the walk from Cullen follow the B9018 towards Deskford for around 2 miles then turn right up the road marked Hill of Maud. Just over a mile along the road on the right-hand side you will see a gated entrance marked Seafield Estate. There is parking for several cars just at the entrance of the walk, please be mindful when parking not to block the gate.

W

hen you think of going to Cullen for a walk you usually think of the stunning beach of The Three Kings. But just a couple miles out of Cullen is the lovely wee hill called the Bin of Cullen a little bit different from a beach walk but still very enjoyable! There is a maze of paths and tracks all over the Bin, this route takes you to the summit of the Bin of Cullen with fantastic views of Cullen, Buckie and right along the coastline to Spey Bay. On a very clear day the hills of the Black Isle can be seen clearly in the distance. It is a very family friendly hill that is lovely all year round. Once parked go round the gate and follow the main forestry track, it does go downhill initially. Ignore the track to the right. After a short

distance you will come to a small bridge over the Glen Burn. Once over the bridge there is a junction, take the track to the left which leads you through the Scots pine plantation. The track will gradually ascend. Keep a look out for the rope swing to your right, a great place to stop for kids but I am sure some adults will not be able resist a go too. After the rope swing further up the track there is another junction. Take a left here. Keep on this track ignoring the one to the right a little bit further on. As you reach the summit there are several narrow rough tracks, avoid them as they are used by mountain bikers descending the summit. Keep your eyes peeled for breaks in the trees where you get great views of the surrounding countryside. Once out of the trees the track continues zigzagging till you reach the summit with a carpet of heather at each side. When the top is reached and you find the cairn and trig point it is time to enjoy the fabulous coastal

views. There is enough room at the summit if you want to have a picnic or to just sit, enjoy the views and take some photos. The return route is simply retracing your steps. You will get another chance to enjoy the walk in the woods. Keep a look out for pine marten, red squirrel and crossbills. I wasn’t lucky enough to see any furry friends, but plenty of crossbills along the way. There is also an abundance of wild flowers and fungi which I did manage to photograph. As the seasons change there is always something new to spot.

TRAVEL

Travelling post covid – what to expect

I

n my last article I delved into the dark abyss that is the UK government’s travel traffic light system, and looked at the ever-changing regulations that can apply to your holiday. There is no doubt that it is a bit of a minefield when trying to navigate, and even with professional advice, the reality can perhaps be a bit of an unknown. I thought that this month it would be helpful if I shared some real-life travelling experiences during the post-COVID era, so that you can fully understand the reality of going on that wellearned holiday. For my wife’s birthday we had originally been booked to Dubai, however a combination of the dreaded red list, and her falling pregnant, meant that we needed to consider an altogether more sedate holiday, and the hedonistic beach clubs of the Middle East were perhaps a bridge too far. For context I am double vaccinated, and my wife is not (or wasn’t at the time of travel), so we get to look at the experience here from both angles.

40

We chose Funchal in Madeira as our destination, and while garnering a bit of a reputation as a destination for travellers of a certain, well, vintage, we thought this was most undeserved. Yes it’s quieter than the likes of Tenerife, Majorca or somewhere similar, but it had an air of elegance about it, with the sprawling marina set against the backdrop of the aged old town and the green hills. Most pleasant! Before we travelled, we had to download the app for Madeira which was simple enough. I uploaded a photo of my COVID certificate which was verified in about 2 hours. As my wife wasn’t vaccinated, we needed to do a pre departure PCR test, which we chose to do at Edinburgh Airport. We also had to prove that we had booked our “day 2 test” for our return. Which at the time of writing is in review – so this may not be relevant. That process was simple – we were the only car there at the time, and were waved through, test done, and out in a matter of minutes. Back to

the hotel to await the result which came back in about 5 hours (negative I hasten to add!). The next day we went to the airport. The queue was quick to go down, and we had our documents checked before we approached the desk. We were handed some information about Covid processes in Madeira, however these were the same as the UK, so nothing to worry about. The flight itself was quite busy, but they did ensure nobody queued in the aisles for the bathrooms etc, so all in all was stress-free. Obviously masks had to be worn, except from when eating/drinking (which I think is a great way of increasing their bar sales… hats off!) On arrival, our passports were checked, our app was checked and we were at baggage claim within 15 minutes of the aircraft arriving at the gate. Very efficient. While there, we were required to wear a mask whenever moving around the hotel, or inside a restaurant, but given that it was 26 degrees, most of our time was spent by the pool, or on a terrace. Coming home was just as easy. Most hotels offer an antigen testing service which costs about 30 euros. We chose to go to a local clinic just to

see what it would be like for any guests whose hotel didn’t have this service. We were texted a time of 08:00 and 08:02 (very specific) 2 days before we departed. Results were back in 4 hours, and we were able to complete our return form. This took approximately 3 minutes on the government website. Arriving back into the UK was again nice and efficient. The PLF form is attached to your passport so there is no need even to show it. Simply scan your passport at the e-gates and you’re through in a jiffy. Off home to complete our day 2 test – which is basically just the same as doing a lateral flow, and dropped it in the local post box. Negative again. Huzzah! The additional cost of all of these tests comes in at about £160 (£80 if you’re double jabbed) so is significant enough if you’re a larger family for instance. But for the sheer luxury of being able to relax in the sunshine, it was worth every penny in my opinion. Going forward I can see things start to loosen up even further, so the costs of these extra measures should hopefully continue to decrease.

BUSTING THE MYTHS

3 of the BIGGEST fat loss myths the so called “gurus” have been telling you. Boy oh boy…

Now I ain’t the first PT out here busting the HORROR fitness myths which still circulate round the inter-web. There have been plenty far more accomplished people who have done the good work before me. But even then… Word hasn’t gotten round to some people So, before we get into the main bit of the article Let's clear the biggest myth up in the fitness and dieting industry. “How do we lose body fat/weight?”.

Starvation mode is the idea that some people drop their calories so low that their body will preserve body fat and that is the reason that they are not losing any weight. What a load of nonsense. Just watch Bear Grylls the Island.

Calorie deficit isn't a diet.

And tell the contestants NOT to worry about dying because “YOUR BODY WILL HOLD ONTO FAT”.

It's the scientific principle of energy balance.

Get in the bin mate.

Calories in (food/drink) VS calories out (exercise and movement).

Never has been a thing >>> never will be a thing.

If you are in a deficit you will lose weight.

There could be a couple of reasons for the idea of starvation mode:

Very simply you can ONLY lose weight in a calorie deficit.

If you are in a surplus you will gain weight. If you are at maintenance you will not lose or put on weight.

42

MYTH 1: Starvation mode ain’t a thing

So now that's out of the way let's get on with the three myths I'm here to bust for you today.

1.

People are starving themselves on low calories and then lie about bingeing out and forgetting about the extra calories consumed. These people will claim their metabolism is broken (when it isn’t).

2.

Metabolic adaptation - as you drop weight your body will then require a lower amount of calories. This means the calories you're currently consuming in a calorie deficit will one day not be enough for you to continue to drop weight. This plays into your total daily energy expenditure.

(The second one is the most likely).

MYTH 2: Doing cardio means you're fit Sure it helps build up your CV system. But unless you are planning on competing or genuinely love it? You don’t HAVE to do it. I'll hear the argument >>> “But I feel as though I'm burning more fat”. Sure you might burn an extra 100 calories doing some running. But you know something. It would be far easier and way less timeconsuming. If you just ate 100 less calories . That's saying no to one Freddo bar . There ain't a fancy exercise you're not doing. You just have to consume less calories than what you're currently eating and compliment that with exercise.

MYTH 3: Carbs make you FAT Well this is an age old one isn't it? There are SOOOOO many other things for you to hate. Why choose carbs? I can 100% assure you they are not bad. In fact they are very, very good for you. First off, your body prefers carbs to use as energy. Second, it helps refuel the muscles after exercis. Third, they taste amazing. And why would you want to REMOVE anything from your life that is amazing??? If you eat TOO many carbs (which equals too many calories) guess what you can do… The solution…….Get some form of control in your life. Hire a coach. Get an accountability buddy. Tell your partner to get on at you. That's it, those are three of the most common myths I hear. Sorry for the rant. Have a lovely day! Ryan.

Lifting weights or ANY kind of exercise pumps the blood around your body just like running/cardio will. Find a form of exercise you enjoy and keep doing it.

Moray on your TV screens

T

he BBC Landward team were seen out and about in Moray at the end of September. They visited Cullen where Nick Nairn was filmed making, what else but ‘Cullen Skink’. I wonder if he would consider entering the Cullen Skink World Championships? One of their other stop-offs was the beautiful walled gardens at Gordon Castle. The Landward team had contacted Moray Food Plus to ask if they could visit them, as they were very interested in finding out more about their food recovery work, as part of an article about food waste. They wanted to speak to Mairi McCallum, project manager and her wonderful team about the work they undertake in Moray. Moray Food Plus takes quality surplus food from supermarkets and other producers and redistributes it to other organisations. BBC Landward were interested in the journey of the food and where it ended up. When the team arrived, Moray Food Plus was receiving their delivery from FareShare. Presenter Dougie Vipond helped unload the van, he wanted to be involved. He then assisted with sorting the food into the different crates for the various organisations that were to receive deliveries that day. During his time there he spoke to Julie Ross, the Moray Food Plus

development worker responsible for the recovery project, to find out more about where the food comes from and its uses. Deliveries were next and he followed driver Tony Broadhurst on his rounds, stopping off at The Loft Youth Project in Keith. Sharon Duncan, project manager at The Loft Youth Project said, “Our youth project receives surplus food on a weekly basis from Moray Food Plus”. Sarah Cruden, a Moray Food Plus development officer had gone along to Keith to deliver a cooking session using the food recovery delivery with several of the young people from The Loft. This was all filmed for BBC Landward and Sarah said, “the young people were fantastic and made chicken fajitas and plum crumble.”. “This was a fantastic opportunity for The Loft Youth Project young people to showcase their skills in cooking” said Sharon. Well done to everyone involved and we all look forward to seeing it on the Television in late 45 October we believe.

WELLBEING SUPPORT

New ‘Bee Well’ monthly cafe launches for suicide prevention week

O

n Monday 6th September, as part of Suicide Prevention Week, Moray Wellbeing Hub CIC (MWH) launched their monthly ‘Bee Well’ drop-in sessions. These sessions, held at Calum’s Kitchen in

Moray Sports Centre Elgin the first Monday of every month 9:30am – 11:30am, provide a safe space for the community of Moray to meet up for connection, sharing and wellbeing support. Conversations on the day flowed from the light-hearted to the more meaningful. Smiles and connection grew as the Champions from MWH provided their natural peersupport. "Such a friendly atmosphere. Chris made me feel very welcome. I'm going to bring my neighbour along next time."

46

As well as tackling isolation and stigma associated with mental health challenges, the sessions try to explore

themed conversation topics such as - what could be improved around suicide prevention in Moray? The key points of which will now be shared with local decision makers to create change. “I feel at peace, I am glad I came. Made me feel worthy and useful. With a bit of a purpose.” The space and refreshments were kindly donated by Calum’s Kitchen proprietor Calum Main, with his delicious snacks and cakes available to purchase with no obligation to do so. The hope is that sessions will have many more people popping by, gaining confidence in meeting in the community once more and maybe coming along to new groups or making new friends. "It was so good to sit and chat. I realised how much I had missed this." "Thank you! I really enjoyed my coffee and there was a nice buzz. Very welcoming." If you are concerned about your own challenging thoughts or want to be prepared to support someone you care about around suicide, a local app is available to support with all the links including how to create a safe plan. This can be downloaded from www.preventsuicideapp.com.

SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Islands, Mairi Gougeon

I

am proud to have been asked by the First Minister to lead the Rural Affairs and Islands portfolio for the Scottish Government. I am determined for Scotland’s rural and island areas and industries to play their part in contributing to our net zero ambitions and in enhancing biodiversity. But I also want rural and island economies and communities to benefit from these priorities too – for there to be more inclusive growth; for green skills to create career opportunities; for fair work first principles to be applied. One of the immediate priorities is to create a new system of rural support. By November, I hope we will have agreed a National Test Programme and we will have started to recruit farmers and crofters to take part in that programme. Our core premise is to take forward the recommendations of the Farmer

led Group reports – as our manifesto promises. We will also consult on a new agriculture bill, setting out our vision for this new rural support system, while ensuring future policy stays broadly aligned with the new CAP. We will continue to modernise tenant farming, begin to modernise small landholding legislation and seek to double the amount of land used for organic farming by 2026. We will start work to determine how best to support new and young entrants into farming and by the end of this Parliament we will have doubled annual support for women in agriculture to develop their skills. But the fact remains that no matter what we do to reform, revitalise, and create a fairer and greener rural Scotland, our efforts will be hindered by the UK Government’s reckless decision to pursue a hard Brexit during the pandemic. We warned of the consequences and are now experiencing these daily. The most recent was the threat to animal wellbeing and food supply with the ceasing of production of CO2 and ammonia.

48

Throughout it all, the people of rural Scotland demonstrate resilience, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. I am determined to harness that so areas like Moray realise their undoubted potential.

THE PRENATAL SNUG

Why being informed helps you have a better birth

B

eing out of control is one of the biggest fears for first-time mums when it comes to giving birth.

What route will the birth take? Will you be advised to have a c-section, an induction or benefit from forceps or ventouse? How will you cope with the pain? Will you be supported by a midwife or a consultant that you’ve met before? The not knowing creates anxiety, and the urgency of just wanting your baby to be safely in your arms creates so much emotion it’s tricky to think clearly. In hypnobirthing we encourage you to use your BRAINS, an acronym that stands for: • Benefits • Risks • Alternatives • Instinct and intuition • Nothing • Smile Assess each situation by asking open questions. If you’re being offered an induction (it’s your body and your baby) ask what the benefits are for you and your baby. What are the risks? Ask for the evidence to back up what you’re being told. Is there an alternative suggestion, and if so, what? What does your instinct tell you? Ask what would happen if you did nothing but wait for a while longer? And smile? Smiling helps you feel better and hopefully maintain a supportive environment for discussion! During emotionally intense times we drop into a light hypnotic state because we are in shock. This means that we naturally follow the lead of those around us who show authority.

Throughout life we’ve been programmed to see police, paramedics, and people in uniform as figures to listen to and trust. However, it’s also important to remember that you have birth choices. Unless there is a medical emergency or evidence there is no reason for you to accept unwanted intervention that has nothing to do with the wellbeing of you or your baby. One of the women I work with told me that she stopped her midwife from giving her an episiotomy and asked why it was necessary. The midwife replied that she always did them. This mum declined and birthed without assistance or intervention. You are not a number, you are not your age, health or any other statistic. You are an individual with birthing choices and preferences. Get informed and do your birth preparation! By referring to the BRAINS acronym you can quickly and easily ask questions that give you the information you need to choose wisely. It can be the difference between a straightforward vaginal birth and a heavily medicalised birth. It’s important that you are asked for consent before any interventions occur. Sophia Hanson is a birth coach, hypnobirthing and prenatal yoga teacher. She runs The Prenatal Snug, an online sanctuary for pregnant women. Check out sophiahanson.com/services

ELGIN TOWN HALL

For The Community

I

t is wonderful to see venues advertising live music once again; we have all missed it so much! Many musicians, as reported in the last issue of Lifestyle, did a fantastic job of keeping us entertained on their live streams and Facebook lives. Lockdown would have been so much harder without all their fantastic efforts. Many of them also used their time well, writing new material and rehearsing for what we have all been waiting for; the time to get back out on the stage, in front of a live audience, where they belong.

Atom Heart Floyd

from now up to the end of the year.

One of those venues is Elgin Town Hall and they have many music acts performing

Starting with The Skids on the 21st Oct. They are a Scottish punk rock and new wave rock band from Dunfermline, Fife, The Skids whose biggest successes were the single Into the Valley in 1979 and their album The Absolute Game in 1980. They currently have five members in the band.

McFleetwood

November brings four completely different performances from Atom Heart Floyd, Johnny Lee Memphis, Eva Cassidy: The Story and McFleetwood. I’m sure there’s something to suit every musical taste. On the 12th Nov Atom Heart Floyd promise to deliver a show that will immerse you in a visual experience throughout. Having shared a passion to reproduce the classic sound of Pink Floyd Live, the band performs songs from across the entire Pink Floyd back catalogue. You don’t want to miss this! 52

Elvis

Who can resist a bit of Elvis, on the 13th Nov back by popular demand,

Elsa Jean McTaggart (Eva Cassidy)

Absolute Elvis featuring Johnny Lee Memphis. Johnny is Scotland’s very own Elvis and won the Elvis World Cup in 2010. Charles Stone, Elvis Presley’s Tour Manager and close friend said, “If you have the opportunity to see Johnny perform, don’t miss it, he is doing Elvis proud”. Elsa Jean McTaggart presents a tribute to her all-time favourite artist Eva Cassidy on the 19th Nov. She brings alive the essence of Eva, with her voice and guitar, as she relates the songs to the beautiful and yet tragic story of one of the world’s most iconic voices, which was not brought to light until years after her untimely death at 33. Elsa has devised this very special show to pay homage to this true interpreter of song. Featuring Wonderful World, Time After Time, Somewhere Over The Rainbow and many more.

The band reformed following on from the success of their 30th anniversary shows celebrating their debut album Good Deeds and Dirty Rags. “The atmosphere at the packed UK dates in 2019 was electric, culminating in a spectacular and emotional return to The Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow in December.”

Last but not least on the 20th November they bring McFleetwood, Scotland’s tribute to Fleetwood Mac. McFleetwood’s energetic performances will satisfy Mac fans old and new with classic hits such as Go Your Own Way, Don’t Stop, Dreams, You Make Lovin Fun, Gypsy, Little Lies, The Chain and many more. December brings another selection of fabulous acts for your entertainment. The 3rd Dec is the date for Goodbye Mr Mackenzie.

Goodbye Mr Mackenzie

2020 should have seen the band tour across Scotland including Elgin. Like many others they have now rescheduled so now is your chance to hear them again. On the 4th Dec Steve Mitchell brings you his brand new theatre show 'George Michael Live.' You will be taken on a musical journey of George’s greatest hits and Wham tracks with a full live band. The show is based on George's 25 Live Tour and audiences are treated to stunning 53

musical arrangements and exciting versions of songs such as Fastlove, Faith, Careless Whisper, Outside and Freedom.

54

The 18th Dec brings an early Christmas present. The Complete Stone Roses & Definitely Oasis, two of the UK’s best known tribute acts recreate two iconic events in British Music History: the 30th anniversary of The Stone Roses iconic Glasgow Green gig and 25 years since the release of What’s The Story Morning Glory. The Complete Stone Roses are one of the UK’s most well-known, most seen and most successful tribute bands. Definitely Oasis are regarded by many Oasis fans and promoters alike as one of the best Oasis tribute bands there is.

A rousing end to the year on the 28th Dec with the amazing Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Bagpipes with attitude, drums with a Scottish accent and a show so hot it carries its own health warning. The band’s achievements have reached incredible heights with their ground breaking fusion of traditional Scottish music and rock/pop anthems which they proudly call ‘bagrock’ You’ll need to be quick to catch these tickets!
