Affordable Luxury Condo Living By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

rom unique exteriors to innovative designs and quality finishes that are often considered upgrades, Domus Developments strives to offer customers high-end homes at affordable prices, says project developer Mike Mescia. “We put a lot of work into our exteriors, for example,” Mescia says, citing upgrades, products like clay brick and concrete siding. Interior features include granite counters, hardwood flooring, porcelain tile and extra-high ceilings. “And we’re very open to customizing in all our properties,” he says. “Whatever the customer wants to use or change, we’re flexible.” Three Domus projects are now taking shape in North London.

Upper richmond Towns This collection of townhomes in Upper Richmond Village at Richmond Street and Sunningdale Road, with its residential/commercial mix, sets a standard in affordable luxury condominium living. Spacious homes, with more than 2,100 square feet of finished living space, incorporate modern architectural designs with main-floor living space and an additional 500-square-foot loft.

domus developments offers home buyers ample choice “It gives the homeowner bonus space above ground, rather than below ground, in a basement,” Mescia says. Surrounded by green space, with ponds and nature trails, the homes feature open-concept layouts with nine-foot ceilings and classic detailing such as granite counters and a gas fireplace. Exteriors incorporate clay brick and James Hardie fiber cement board, which Mescia says gives a more attractive appearance than traditional siding. These homes are priced from $309,900 and will be available for spring move-in. MoDEL opEN WEEkENDS fRoM 1 - 5pM

meadows of sUnningdale This picturesque community of 56 one-floor units is taking shape at Sunningdale Road and Meadowlands Way, just west of Richmond Street.

Stone and stucco exteriors plus flat roofs give these homes a European flair, Mescia says. As one-floor units, ranging from 2,300 to 2,400 square feet, they’re tailored to professionals, retirees and empty nesters, he says. However, a second-floor 700-square-foot loft, open to the main floor, adds additional space and could be a guest bedroom and den or a large studio. Ten of the lots will back onto a ravine and nature pond. priced from $379,900, these homes will be available by spring. MoDEL opEN WEEkENDS fRoM 1 - 5pM

norTh poinT London's first modern loft project will offer 51 customizable boutique condos, ranging from 1,100 to 2,000 square feet, in a fourstorey building. The open-concept lofts, with 10- and 12-foot ceilings, full-height windows and generous balconies, feature hardwood flooring and granite counters as well as gas fireplaces, stoves and outdoor barbecues. Adjacent to the Masonville shopping and entertainment district, location is a key feature, Mescia says. Construction has begun on the first floor and occupancy is expected by the end of the year. Loft prices start at $309,900.

editorial editorial “And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” – F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, The GreaT GaTsby

I

know that there are people who say that they prefer cold temperatures and ski hills to balmy days spent at the beach, but really – who doesn’t love summer? Days are longer, evenings more relaxed. We spend weekends at the cottage or camper, in the garden, at the boat – communing with nature in whatever way suits us best. Evenings are for grilling, giggling in the grass and gauging how long the children should be allowed to push bedtimes. Though there are those who profess to love snow and its inherent activities, I think they secretly love summer too but are just too cool to admit it. A trip to the beach is one of summer’s great pleasures and in Southwestern Ontario we have the pleasure of choosing among sandy destinations. Check out our spread on Port Stanley on page 44 or head north to Lake Huron. We have several features demonstrating the beauty and diversity of Ontario’s West Coast. Ellen Ashton-Haiste toured a home with a view of Lake Huron and shares that experience with us on page 23, so check that out if you’re looking to purchase a home on Ontario’s West Coast to enjoy the warmer months. On page 52, Richard Young tells us about a new place to enjoy a drink, some music and a laugh with friends in Bayfield at The Ashwood Bourbon Bar. On page 63, he outlines the wonders of learning to wakeboard and paddleboard and of partaking in a whole range of water activities at Windmill Lake. Hot days mean hot fashions and on page 53 Heather Toskan offers options for some of the warmest around. She’s rounded up bathing suits and bags that will make that trip to the beach even more fun. I love travel writing, and being able to visit Canada’s third-largest city and experience its delights, under the able guidance of my son, Ellis, was a real treat. To me, Vancity is a hipster’s paradise and a hippy’s ultimate hangout – it truly offers something for everyone. With endless eats, amazing sights, sounds of the city, smells of the ocean and the feel of the cool mountains, it’s worth putting on your list of travels this vacation season. Summer is more pleasurable with a great space to enjoy the great outdoors without going very far. On page 9 we’ve put together ideas and suggestions for elements that will make your outdoors truly great. Finally, remaining in business for five years is considered a success in Canada, but remaining vital to customers and clients for half a century or over a century is really a feat. On page 31, we recognize two St. Thomas businesses – Mugford’s and Jennings – that have done just that. Congratulations! As days lengthen, nights grow softer and we move outdoors to enjoy this brief yet blissful time, the Lifestyle Magazine crew wishes you and yours a safe and happy summer!

Developments west of London are taking off

By Jill Ellis-Worthington

A

s a devoted fan of the area in which he resides, Ted Melchers, of Melchers Construction, couldn’t be happier than to be working on a second development in Komoka. As one of the men behind a residential construction company that has built in and around London for 28 years, Melchers says, “We live on a farm just outside of Komoka, so we are tied to this area that we love. It’s easy for us to promote it because we are genuine about how grateful we are to live out this way.”

“The Kilworth area has always been desirable because of its proximity to the river and outdoor features.”

The area west of London is taking off with unprecedented growth over the past three years. This is attributable to many factors, both natural and manmade. One example of the latter is the work of staff for the municipality of Middlesex Centre. According to Melchers, lower property taxes and lower development charges make it financially more attractive. The municipality also had the foresight to construct infrastructure in the area that would encourage growth, like sewers, water lines and water treatment facilities. Working with municipalities that recognize the value of building the tax base by increasing the population is attractive to developers, according to Don de Jong of The Tridon Group. When you add an area with attractive natural features, like a provincial park, and family amenities, like a community centre and sportsplex, you get a fast-developing area that is attractive to developers, builders and homebuyers. Tridon recently developed two neighbourhoods in Kilworth and is bringing a third on line in 2017.

Melchers’ Woods Edge project is proving so popular that the first phase of these single-family homes on larger lots starting in the $400,000s are expected to soon be sold out.

“The Kilworth area has always been desirable because of its proximity to the river and outdoor features. Additionally, Middlesex Centre is progressive and we’ve had a good working relationship with them in years past,” says de Jong. Builders feel the same way, according to Melchers. “Building west of London is attractive in so many ways. Komoka and Mount Brydges have more of a country feel away from the hustle bustle of the city. They are family-oriented communities with good schools, which is very attractive to many buyers, yet they still have easy access to London,” he explains. According to Ben Puzanov, planner for Middlesex County, “Komoka, Kilworth and Ilderton have been accommodating most of the growth because of the municipal services available there.” These were designated growth areas and allowances were made for the addition of municipal infrastructure to promote compact development as required by the province, as part of the municipality’s official plan in 2001. In Komoka’s Parkview Heights, Melchers Construction is offering a mix of condos and single-family homes. The former is to answer a need for the aging demographic. These condominiums will be single-storey living starting in the $300,000s. “These are for people who want a lower-maintenance lifestyle, like retired farmers, who want to stay in the area and still have the flexibility of going to Florida for the winter but not worry about being away from their property,” says Melchers. Melchers adds that offering higher-density housing at a lower starting price point is an integral part of the plan for Middlesex Centre.

In Mount Brydges, Melchers’ Woods Edge project is proving so popular that the first phase of these single-family homes on larger lots starting in the $400,000s are expected to soon be sold out. The Model home is located at 697 Woods Edge Road. With construction started in 2013, Kilworth Heights is a mixed-density project as well, according to de Jong. As the land developers, Tridon is working with four construction companies – Marquis Developments, JLC Homes, Delange Homes and Castell Homes – on these houses, which will start at $400,000. Additionally, 35 vacant land detached condominiums will be built there and will start at $279,900. The condos for this project will be built by Werrington Homes as its first project, which is a partnership between de Jong and Dan Katz of Esam Group. The area has proven itself, as de Jong and Tridon will soon start its third west end development. In Kilworth, this as-yet-unnamed project will see “hundreds” of homes spread over 135 acres, with expected occupancy in 2017 and the whole project completed in seven to 10 years. “There will be various types of units to choose from,” says de Jong, “with a range of prices.” Some will be traditional single-family homes, vacant land condos and attached condos, with areas devoted to green space and a new school.

Both Melchers and de Jong speak highly of the ease of working with Middlesex Centre staff. “In a smaller community, you can sit down with staff and work through issues – the normal points of discussion that come up during any planning of a development – very quickly,” says de Jong. Both also admit that the current residents of the areas in which they are working have not always been entirely happy, but in jointly working through the issues, good compromises have been found. “We attended a public meeting and we ended up changing some things because we were flexible and wanted to compromise to make things more palatable for the neighbours. We changed our plans from having 38 attached condos to 17 detached condos,” says Melchers. Looking for a new home in a fresh new area? Look west. n

“It’s exciting to get a lakefront property in such wonderful condition as this one,” Realtor Trudy Bustard says of the home in Southcott Pines, a forested subdivision just south of the town centre. “Often they’re dated and need work. This one is in immaculate condition and yet it really feels like a cottage. It has the amenities and the location.” Although the original cottage was built more than four decades ago, it has undergone extensive renovations to modernize it. The current owners updated the kitchen, extending an outer wall to create the additional space and cabinets, and combined the upper master bedroom with a new bathroom. They have also installed a gas furnace with central air-conditioning and new electricals and plumbing, including outdoor hot and cold running water that’s ideal for washing off after a day on the beach. The roof is just five years old. The two-level home, now almost 2,400 square feet, is entered at the ground level from an interlocking stone driveway and parking area. A spacious foyer leads to three bedrooms, two of them connected by a cheater bathroom. The lower level also includes laundry facilities. Each bedroom opens to a private stone patio. In fact, there is outdoor access from every room in the house.  Continued on page 27

ABOVE Picturesque views from the back patio provide the perfect spot to unwind from the stresses of the city.

A stairway from the foyer leads to an open-concept kitchen, dining room and great room. The focal point is a sitting area with a cathedral ceiling facing a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. While the fireplace is gas, it’s not a gas insert. The owners explain they felt the insert would create too much heat in the immediate sitting area and they prefer the ambiance of an open fire. A short hallway leads to the master bedroom and new bathroom with an engineered quartz-topped floating vanity and large glassed-in shower. The upper level flooring – birch hardwood – and ceramic tile flooring in the foyer and bathrooms feature in-floor heating. The lower level bedrooms are carpeted. A wrap-around deck envelopes the upper level. A lower sitting deck has been enclosed with a glass wall as protection against lake winds. The setting is ideal for family gatherings, the owners maintain, citing the private beach and long, sandy stretch of shallow water into the lake with no sudden drop-off or undertow – an important safety feature for grandkids. Although it’s secluded, they appreciate the access to local amenities. It’s a short walk to downtown Grand Bend, with its public beach and marinas. It’s also an easy stroll in the other direction along the beach to Pinery Provincial Park, which offers yearround recreation with walking and bike trails, groomed ski trails and its 10-kilometre beach. b

comfy wooden chair has decorated my backyard since my oldest son made it for me in his high school shop class. The years have taken a toll on this beloved piece of furniture. I wanted to try my hand at resurrecting it but was hesitant as do-it-yourselfing isn’t my strongest suit. With advice from some experts and the help of my husband, I was able to bring this worn-out piece back to vivid life. Diamonds and Toads carries Annie Sloan brand – the original chalk paint – which is manufactured in the U.S. Stan Portley’s sells Canadian-made van Gogh Fossil Paint. Both are excellent products for novices like me and for experienced DIYers who want to be more daring. John Robinson at Stan Portley’s and Michelle Gallant at Diamonds and Toads were both generous with valuable advice, which they gladly provide to all customers. True to its marketing promises, chalk paint is easy to use (even for the inexperienced among us) and forgiving. Because it’s odour-free, we were able to work on the chair in our basement during the frigid winter months and have it ready for a spring debut. It cleans up more easily than latex paint, with just a quick rinse necessary for brushes. 

Using chalk paint makes reviving outdoor furniture easy and fun

After Before:

According to my expert advisors, most pieces don’t need special prep, but because mine was peeling and splintering from age and weather damage, we chose to scrape and sand it. Be sure to dust your piece off well with a damp rag before painting.

step 1

This paint does not require primer, so you can hop right into applying the first coat. We used various sizes of disposable bristle brushes multiple times – the paint cleans up easily with water. Throw on some old clothes and some latex gloves and get started.

step 2

We disassembled the arms from the chair to make it easier to handle during refinishing. Mix the paint thoroughly – this is a necessary step when using any type of paint, and especially for chalk paint. Apply in even strokes, tipping out the surface for best results. We started at the bottom and worked our way up. That did require some touch-ups due to drips, so consider going the other way.

step 3

Mask off any areas you don’t want to paint, especially if you are doing multiple colours like we did. Use a professional painter’s tape, as it will produce clean, sharp edges and won’t peel the new paint off of surfaces.

step 4

Even the darkest colour needed two coats, but chalk paint dries quickly and can be recoated within a few hours of drying time. Lighter colours (especially those based on red and orange hues) needed many coats: yellow about four, while the pink needed seven.

The celebrations continue the following night with a Blues Bash being held at the London Music Hall!

after:

Reassembly followed, a few touch-ups and voilà – the old, decrepit chair is renewed. It is ready to return to the garden and provide hours of visual and sedentary enjoyment. Indoor pieces are often finished with a coat of beeswax to give a glossier finish, but those meant for the outdoors are not. The paint will handle the elements, weathering to a mellower look, according to our experts. n

step 5

Once the finishing accents were completed, we peeled off the remaining painter’s tape.

Two St. Thomas retailers celebrate landmark anniversaries

J ABOVE LEFT As the second-oldest furniture store in Canada, opening its doors in 1885, Jennings is proud to continue to provide high-quality home furnishings to St. Thomas residents. ennings Furniture and Design and Mugford’s, two St. Thomas familyowned and -operated businesses, celebrate historical milestones this year. Jennings is celebrating its 130th anniversary, while Mugford’s celebrates its 50th year. Their long-term sustainability is a testament to their owners’ hard work and perseverance.

E

stablished in 1885, Jennings was owned and operated by the Jennings family for four generations. In 2009, Renée Carpenter, a former Jennings in-store designer, purchased the business. As luck would have it, her takeover coincided with one of the worst economic downturns in recent memory. “It felt like the bottom had fallen out of the world,” recalls Carpenter. “Being new to retail, I knew I had to cut out the dead weight and clear out old inventory. I first determined my niche market and began to focus on this new direction. I made the choice to go higher end. Old vendors with outdated styles were eliminated while newer, trendier ones with fewer problems and more options were added. “The element of a full interior design service played a huge part in this new role as I brought on decorators and designers. The formula to our success has been to reinvent ourselves and stay

flexible while continuing to stay true to who we are in service and quality. Jennings’ reputation and history dictate that,” says Carpenter. Today, visitors will find three floors of quality furniture and accessories for the living, dining, bedroom, kitchen and bath areas, plus wallpaper, cab-

inetry, rugs and lighting, and a specialty design centre with five interior consultants for in-store and inhome service. Jennings’ tagline, “It’s time to love where you live!” is a principle Carpenter takes to heart. “Our focus is to create an environment and experience for our clients that they will remember and share with others. Our customers are welcomed into our ‘home’ and made to feel at home while we help them love and create their home.” Carpenter says a celebratory gala and other events will be introduced throughout the year. “As Canada’s second-oldest furniture store, we are quickly becoming a rarity in the world of historic, privately-owned furniture stores,” she says. stablished in 1965 by Merle and and Don Mugford, Mugford’s (formerly called Mugford Shoes) has been family-owned and -operated for 50 years. General manager Patti Mugford-Pooley says her parents “worked night and day from the beginning,” travelling to Europe to buy different products, listening to what their customers wanted, providing good service, variety and quality products, and ensuring customers always take home footwear that fits properly. “Long hours, hard work, and perseverance have been our formula for success,” says Mugford-Pooley, “that and personalized attention to detail in the fitting of footwear and apparel.” At one point, Mugford’s had eight stores in operation. Today, the family operates three stores – the original St. Thomas location and two in London – and employs 17 people. Although it also offers brand-name women’s everyday apparel and handbags, Mugford’s remains first and foremost a shoe store, carrying lines like Blundstone, Rieker, New Balance, Clarks, Florsheim, and many others. Pedorthic services are offered as well. Mugford-Pooley says generations have shopped at her family’s St. Thomas store. “People expect to see a Mugford here, whether it’s me, my sister Jodi, or my mother Merle, who continues to work in the store six days a week,” she says. “What sets us apart is our personalized service and the professionalism of our staff.” Keeping pace with changing tastes while maintaining its reputation for quality and fashion are the factors that will carry Mugford’s through its next 50 years, says Mugford-Pooley. The store plans to have a big party in May to celebrate its 50th anniversary, she adds.

INFO St. Thomas Mayor Heather Jackson acknowledges the two retailers’ longevity and success. “Congratulations to both Jennings Furniture and Mugford’s on their anniversaries!” says Jackson. “It is a great achievement and a testament to their hard work and dedication to customer service that these two local businesses are celebrating these milestone anniversaries. all your questions

A question and answer session with Phil Cannon, The Drapery Man

Q:

We have very high ceilings with a double row of windows in our living room. I want to soften the look with side drapes – where should they go? A: Play up that dramatic height with full-length panels. Often people hang a pole above the first row of windows, but this just cuts the room in half and diminishes the impact. Go big or stay home! Q: I have an older home with tall windows that had drapery and valances on them. I like fabric, but what can I use for a lighter, more modern look? A: I would suggest roman shades. Chances are that old house has deep windows with wide, beautiful wood trim around them. Romans in those windows will show the woodwork off, make the room feel bigger and give you the visual effect of valances, but you can lower them for privacy.

Q: We get a lot of sun (and heat) in our family room. What type of blinds will make it more comfortable but not dark?

or warping, and you can wash vinyl shutters with soap and water!

A: All types of blinds will help to some degree, but I would look at honeycomb shades. The most effective are Duette Architellas by Hunter Douglas. These shades have three layers of air pockets and are extremely insulating, plus they come in some very attractive fabrics. I like the cordless and top-down options.

A: Silk has always been associated with luxury. Be it in clothing or furnishings, it is gorgeous but delicate. Because it is so thin, a good workroom will use heavy linings to add body and give the draperies a plush appearance. They do require extra care as they are difficult to wash, and are they not easily dry cleaned. There are some fairly convincing-looking polyester-based artificial silks on the market now that are easier to take care of, but there is something about real silk. b

Q: We’re thinking about shutters and are torn between wood versus vinyl. What are the benefits of each? A: Wood shutters can be painted or stained any colour you like and have the warm feeling that natural materials bring to a room. However, most people want white, and now that Eclipse vinyl shutters come in a matte finish, the look is very similar to painted wood. Where vinyl really wins is that it is so low maintenance. No fading, peeling

Q: Is silk a good choice for my formal living room draperies?

hough B.C. stands for British Columbia, perhaps it should stand for Be Cause. Visit Vancouver because it’s beautiful, because it’s surrounded by haunting rainforests, because it’s culturally diverse, because it’s one of the only cities in Canada where palm trees grow, because when you look one way you see mountains and the other way ocean, because it has great dining experiences, because it’s laid back and exciting at the same time and, mostly, because you’ll have a great time. For those from Southwestern Ontario, a visit to Vancity will most likely start at the airport. Two things: check out a $20 bill and then look up. You’ll see a familiar sight in Bill Reid’s sculpture, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, in the International Terminal. Secondly, getting into the city is easier here than almost anywhere in North America. Follow the signs to the SkyTrain and jump on. If you’re staying downtown or in Gastown, you’ll jump off at Waterfront Station, home of Canada’s first Starbucks. This will be the first of hundreds of coffee shops that you can experience during your stay. With a shop populating practically every block, coffee is king in Vancouver. ences in preparation. Visit Harbour Centre, as a trip up the tower to the Vancouver Lookout will help you get the lay of the land and provide an amazing view. A one-day pass allows visitors to return the same day, so take advantage and shoot up the tower again at night to marvel at the glimmer of millions of lights. Another way to get a good feel for the city is taking the Vancouver Trolley Hop-On, Hop-Off City Attractions Tour. It features 34 stops, including several in Stanley Park. At the other end of the tour is English Bay, where visitors can sit and enjoy lunch on the Milestones patio, while taking in the view of palm trees and the ocean. Locals laugh at their own politically incorrect love of the odd, tasty treats from Japadog, one of the many food trucks that line the streets. Japadog has 20 types of regular hot dogs covered in exotic ingredients on offer, the most popular of which is the Terimayo. This dog is covered in teriyaki sauce, mayo and seaweed. The SeaBus is part of the general transit system and costs no more than any of the efficient sky trains or electric buses. Catch one at Waterfront Station, then bus it up to Grouse Mountain. This is an economical, time-conscious way to experience B.C.’s mountainous beauty.

The “dream kitchen” Martin Jesko Custom Cabinetry designed for Treadstone Development’s Fall Lottery Dream Home was featured in the January/February 2015 issue of Lifestyle Magazine. “Our designs suit the customer’s individual style,” says company owner Martin Jesko. “Every person has their own taste and they should have the design that suits them, not someone else. Each project is the result of years of experience and product research combining modern craftsmanship with the latest trend to develop the most functional and stylish product available.” From its shop and showroom located at 571 Commercial Crescent in London, the company

serves the London area, stretching to Grand Bend and as far afield as Toronto. Jesko says residential customers are 90 per cent of his company’s business. An impressive visual collection of past projects, kitchen and vanity styles is available on the Jesko website. Jesko says that free consultations are available upon request. “From there, with the assistance of an interior design student, I come up with layouts and material selections for customers. We do 3-D renderings with the materials the customer has chosen,” he says. When asked what sets his company apart from the competition, Jesko reiterates his company’s commitment to quality and uniqueness. “I would say quality from build to install, and the fact that I do the design, spray and install myself with a helper. I think our designs are unique, and our company’s ‘personality’ eases the customer into having an enjoyable process.” b

nspiration for the Off the Wall…And Off the Vine Art Show being held July 19 at Quai du Vin Estate Winery came to organizer Penny Crichton during an outdoor art show in Port Stanley last summer. “I was reminded of how many passionate artists and artisans there really are in such a tiny village,” says Crichton, a member of the Association of Port Stanley Artists. “I thought about how great it would be to present an outdoor summer art show big enough to accommodate as many artists as possible from Port Stanley, Elgin County and Southern Ontario in one picturesque place.” Crichton helped organize Summer Swing for The Stork Club Big Band Museum and Hall of Fame at Quai du Vin with owners Rob and Lisa Quai in 2012, so she knew the popular Elgin County winery would be the ideal venue for such an event. “We want artists to meet, share ideas and grow; we want art enthusiasts to take home a work of art and maybe find their own passion; and we want wine enthusiasts to savour the fruits from the Quai du Vin winery amongst their vines,” says Crichton. In addition to original art and wine, the event invites

visitors to experience fine food, music and beer from Railway City Brewing Company. More than 50 artists and artisans will be displaying their works. “While there are professional, long-time artists attending, there are also many newcomers and budding entrepreneurs of all different mediums to enjoy,” says Crichton. “All were selected on their passion for the arts. Our selection committee believes that this is what makes the artist – having the opportunity to step up and expand your creative side and have it evolve over time.” One of the features of the show will be en plein air – the art of painting in the open air. A café area will be set up where visitors can watch first-hand how a painting comes together in a landscape setting while enjoying food and wine. Crichton thanks fellow APSA members Marcia Pensa-Snelgrove, Sharron Russell and Kim Yuhasz and the event’s generous sponsors for their assistance in organizing the inaugural Off the Wall…And Off the Vine event. “We want this to become an annual event and we want everyone who attends to have fun,” says Crichton. n

rt and rental would appear to be strange bedfellows, but together they make one of life’s greatest pleasures an intelligent and affordable indulgence. The rationale behind renting art from artists or galleries is simple: Original art needs to be savoured slowly; finding what truly speaks to you requires time and multiple exposures. Photographer Jennifer Squires Ross creates “soothing art for simple living.” Her minimalist landscape photographs beg for quiet contemplation. She started renting out her pieces in 2011 through the Art Etc. Gallery Shop at The Art Gallery of Burlington. Since then, Squires Ross has begun working with Cheryl Trudell at Home Staging 4 Success. Squires Ross describes three categories of renters: the first is home stagers and designers who need art for a limited time and don’t want something mass produced; the second is businesses and corporations that appreciate fine art and decor but like to change up what they have in their offices on a regular basis; the third is people who like to try before they buy.

By Beth Stewart

Sculptor Richard Sturgeon offers rental as an option when an outright purchase is not possible, or when a client has fallen in love with a piece but is unsure of its suitability for their space. Sturgeon says, “It’s a chance [for clients] to try the work out in context.” He was recently contacted by a designer looking for something to add punch to the entranceway of a client’s beautiful new home. Sturgeon had a sculpture that suited the space and placed it there temporarily. The piece drew enough compliments from guests that the homeowners purchased it outright. Muse Shop and Rental at Museum London offers an excellent program. While the service does generate a stream of revenue for the Museum, more importantly, it promotes the work of local artists such as Donna Andreychuk and Annemarie Plint. Muse sales clerk and community engagement coordinator Jordan Brennan says more and more individuals are renting art to decorate their homes for a special occasion or to try out the look of a piece of art before adding it to their personal collection. She says rentals

are also popular with corporate offices, real estate agents and event companies. “The majority rent for one to six months,” says Brennan. Some pieces rent for as little as $25 per month. Placing original artwork in a home or office for a small fee is simply a win-win situation for all concerned. The artist gets exposure, and living with a piece for a month or so allows renters to see if it’s really going to work for them. b

Bath by design By Ellen Ashton-Haiste

F

or the past decade Bart and Dawinder Bahth have built their London Bath Centre into a thriving business, offering a range of unique products and an emphasis on first-class customer service.

For most of that time, they operated out of a storefront at 750 Wharncliffe Road South. However, as business continued to grow, they found display space too limited. In December they launched a new design centre with a much larger showroom, just up the road at 596 Wharncliffe. The 30-per-cent increase in space has allowed the couple to showcase many more products. And, as a bonus, the location is more visible, resulting an increase in customer traffic. “It’s been a great move,” Bart says. “We’ve had excellent feedback from customers and from neighbouring business owners.” He credits Rawle Blackman, of Modern Living London, and Ali Soufan, of York Developments, for inspiring the new venue. They approached the Bahths last fall, proposing the opening of a design centre, a first for the city. “We jumped onboard,” Bart says, adding that York Developments did superior work on the interior renovations. The new showroom is bright and airy, with multiple display areas showcasing a wide variety of bath fixtures and plumbing supplies. The centre specializes in unique mid- to high-end products from

around the world and Bart is also proud to offer completely Canadian lines as well as exclusive items, not available elsewhere in London. Examples include Rubinet faucets, manufactured in Woodbridge, Ontario with finishes such as Swarovski crystals and 14-karat gold; soaker tubs, insulated with volcanic limestone; therapeutic tubs with heated back rests; and French-made Decotec vanities in a rainbow of colours. But the business is about more than the products, Bart stresses. “We are all about customer service. We do offer beautiful products at reasonable prices but we are focused on achieving happy customers and building positive relationships.” He rejects hard-sell or competitive tactics and says he will take all the time necessary to help a client with a plumbing issue, even if it involves fixtures purchased elsewhere. The result, he maintains, is a satisfied and long-term clientele. “We are surrounded with good people and our customers become our friends.” The fact that most of his clients – who regularly come from as far afield as Toronto to Windsor – are word-of-mouth referrals proves the point.

Shopping local means shopping healthy By Ralph Lembcke

A

s the years pass, we often find ourselves drawn to things from childhood, when shopping at the open-air farmers’ market was a weekly activity. The food we grew up with holds a renewed and special place in our souls as we make our way through our pre-packaged lives. Growing up in an old-world European household allowed me to truly learn where my food came from. Farm fresh and organic weren’t catchphrases but simply the way things were. Our vegetables came from our garden, carefully turned, fertilized with manure and tended to daily by our whole family. Fresh in-season apples, peaches and pears were purchased from roadside vendors on many road trips to Niagara Falls, and we often stopped to picnic along the way.

It’s not just nostalgia that brings us back to a simpler and more real way to source our food, but the realization that it is healthier for our bodies and our local agricultural industries. In Southwestern Ontario, we are lucky to be able to shop at local farmers’ markets or even buy direct from local growers, who are becoming well known for fresh, quality produce. Beef rouladen (meat roll) served with fresh local vegetables is a nostalgic dish that I’m drawn to lately, as it exemplifies this return to the real food of my upbringing by German-immigrant parents and because of the rave reviews it gets from dinner guests. Historically this dish was made with thinly sliced venison or cheaper cuts of beef. Regardless, the meat for rouladen must be very thinly sliced and not every butcher knows how to do it right. I get mine freshly sliced by Dan Murphy’s

butcher Jim at Field Gate Organics in the Covent Garden Market. Murphy notes, “We use inside round to cut our rouladen, using a large eye instead of the more traditional smaller version. The majority of our meat is locally sourced from farms in Middlesex, Oxford, Perth and Huron counties. We process all of it in Oxford County at our own tri-plant, meaning we handle pork, beef and lamb products there. Ours is Ontario’s first federally ‘certified organic’ plant.” n

Each is rolled up, allowing just a hint of bacon to protrude from the ends. Meat rolls are skewered with toothpicks and pan seared in a mixture of butter and olive oil. Once browned, the rolls are placed in a shallow pan (uncovered) and into a 325 F oven (or barbecue) for about 45 minutes, depending on how well done you like your meat.

Frieda’s rouladen (Serves four)

8 thin slices local organic beef (ask the butcher for rouladen) 8 tsp grainy mustard 8 slices local butcher bacon (cut in half) 1 small sweet onion, sliced thin 8 slices dill pickle 16 toothpicks Salt and pepper to taste

The recipe varies depending on region and household tradition. For my mom’s recipe, the meat is laid flat on a cutting board and seasoned with a generous amount of salt and pepper, then slathered with grainy European-style mustard. Half a slice of country-style butcher bacon is laid along each edge. Then, local fresh sweet onions and dill pickles are thinly sliced and laid on top.

Use pan drippings to make an au jus or gravy. Serve with potato dumplings. When you’re at the market buying the meat, pick up some farm-fresh tomatoes and cauliflower to serve on the side. The latter can be drizzled with browned butter. To complete the meal, pour a crisp locally brewed pilsner or a Niagara Gewürztraminer for a real 100-mile German-Canadian treat that’s not only nutritious and delicious, but socially responsible as well. Every cloud has a silver lining,” they say, and so it is with Bayfield’s Ashwood Inn and Bourbon Bar, the newest addition to Ontario’s West Coast in Huron County. “Sadly, 100-year-old ash trees had to be taken down at Deer Park Lodge due to the Emerald Ash Borer. We’ve given them a second life,” says the Ashwood’s owner, Kirsten Harrett. “We built a kiln from a shipping container, had the wood milled, and dried the lumber over the winter. D. L. Creations of Bayfield has turned the lumber into our impressive reception desk, our Bourbon Bar top, and restaurant tables.” Purchased as an addition to adjacent Deer Park Lodge, the Ashwood is located on 22 acres, north of the Bayfield River. A complete overhaul and renovation of the existing property and building has been underway since June 2014. The Ashwood’s official opening is May 30 with a sold-out performance by popular Canadian roots rock band Skydiggers. Chef Robert Whyte, who teaches in the Humber College culinary program, will be the Ashwood’s head chef. Pete Meades, of Meades Bros Productions and Bayfield Concert Series, is music director and manager of the Inn. “We have large, bright, inviting double and single queen rooms, as well as king and family suites,” says

Harrett. “For music fans, we will be offering ‘Stay ’n’ Play’ packages for the concerts held at the Bourbon Bar.” “Our menu will incorporate the finest available local ingredients to create an ever-changing farm-to-table menu, while The Ashwood Bourbon Bar will be mixing up some incredible cocktails, offering rare bourbons for connoisseurs and connoisseurs in the making,” says Harrett. “Our vision is a place where food, drink, music and accommodation come together to create a unique experience for the patrons,” says Meades. “This is the first live music venue in Huron County where the stage and sound system have been built and designed specifically with musicians in mind. We will be supporting and promoting original Canadian artists.” Harrett says the Ashwood will be open year-round, and she plans to partner with other like-minded businesses in the area to promote Ontario’s West Coast as a fourseason destination. b

All hues of blue, teal and turquoise, along with orange, green, pink and basic black are awash with style in solid and patterned swimwear. When it comes to prints, watercolour, tribal, and pixilated floral patterns are all making waves. As for choosing a beach cover-up, it may be time to drop the sarong. “Lightweight, flowing pants, caftans, maxi and tank dresses are among the many stylish cover-ups that double as casual daywear to look great both on and off the beach,” says Storonianski. Warmer weather means it’s finally time to free your soles in comfortable strappy sandals and espadrilles that wear well with everything from swimwear to dresses. “Nubuck, patent and leather sandals with one- to three-inch block and wedged heels are super stylish and comfortable,” says Patti Mugford-Pooley, the general manager of Mugford’s. Colour blocking, snake print and decorative buckles make for fancy feet, and two-tone patterns go heel to toe. According to Mugford-Pooley, other styles to keep you on your toes include double-band and cross-strap slip-ons, rope-soled espadrilles and lightweight running shoes in neutral and jazzy tones. Neutral kicks in tan and black along with metallic shades of pewter and gold are all on call. Pastel, navy and white shoes also step out in style, while red, hot pink, orange and turquoise offer energizing blasts of colour. If you’re in need of a new handbag, top-handled satchels, cross-body, tote and bucket bags carry the day. “If you can buy just one bag, I’d recommend investing in a high-quality leather cross-body bag in a neutral colour to look great this summer and for many seasons to come,” recommends Mugford-Pooley. n

Refresh from head to toe to get a jump-start on summer By Jill Ellis-Worthington

I

t’s time to spring clean our bodies the way we sweep away wintery buildup from our homes, preparing to wear summer’s more revealing fashions and readying ourselves to enjoy the lovely yet short time that is summer in Southwestern Ontario. Start at the top and get rid of buildup on your scalp to reveal shiny, soft hair, advises Nina Badr of N U Hair and Make Up Studio. “It’s really the same process as you’d use on your body: exfoliate, cleanse, moisturize.” Use a boar bristle brush on your dry hair to loosen built-up dry skin on scalp. Starting at hairline, gently brush back and forth one inch at a time, moving vertically and horizontally along your scalp only. Badr recommends using Schwarzkopf Professional BC Deep Cleansing PreShampoo Peeling as an exfoliator for your scalp. Use a colour-safe, deep-cleansing shampoo to wash away all the dry skin you’ve loosened. Rinse well and repeat

once or twice to ensure you’ve achieved a deep clean. Squeeze excess water from your hair and gently towel dry. Apply a deep moisturizing conditioner from mid-shaft to ends – applying it to your scalp can make it oily. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle and let conditioner soak into your hair for 30 minutes. After rinsing and gently towel drying hair, use a spray-on leavein conditioner and brush through. Next apply a dime-size dollop of serum – Badr recommends BioSilk – from midshaft to ends. A heat-protecting spray is recommended before blow drying. “Never use a heat appliance to ‘raw’ hair,” she adds. You can opt to do this process yourself or ask your stylist if this is a treatment that he or she offers. To present your best face to the world, a facial will sweep away winter’s dryness. Aging skin needs special treatment, and Linda Shaba at Mayfair Salon and Spa recommends having your skin assessed by a professional before undertaking a facial. Anti-aging, hydrating, acne, organic – there is a facial treatment for each concern. At Mayfair, the facial starts with cleaning to remove excess oil, then a toner is applied to tighten and tone the skin. Exfoliators fall into two categories: enzyme (usually gels) or mechanical (products with scrubbers). To minimize wrinkles, Shaba recommends an exfoliator with glycolic acid “because it has the smallest molecules for deepest penetration. Cleaning the 

Eat for Energy According to celebrated nutrition expert and author of the original gluten-free cookbook, Live The Smart Way, Kathy Smart says these are the top five ways to be sure you’ll have enough energy to power your summer fun: Reduce or eliminate white sugar White sugar affects hormones and makes women 40-plus fatter in the belly. Instead use honey, coconut sugar or maple syrup to sweeten. Eat veggies like it’s your job When you fill up with the good stuff, you won’t crave bad foods. Get moving Aim for 10,000 steps a day to get your lymphatic system moving to eliminate toxins. Drink two to three litres of water per day If you feel tired, you’re actually dehydrated. Flavour with lemon or fresh veggies, not artificial products, if you need help drinking more. Eat protein at every meal and snack This stabilizes blood sugar and you’ll feel fuller. www.livethesmartway.com

buildup of dead skin on either side of a wrinkle can reduce its appearance.” The type of mask used is also dictated by skin type: hydrating masks for dehydrated skin, moisturizing for dry skin or clay for drawing oil and bacteria out of pores. Next, a protective moisturizing crème with sunscreen is applied. Shaba says that the best anti-aging treatment for skin is consistent use of sunscreen. My skin is dry and I’m concerned about lines and wrinkles, so Shaba used hydrating and anti-aging products during the facial. The massage portion is definitely one of the high points of having a facial at a salon but DIY is also an option if you follow the steps. Warmer weather requires wearing clothes that reveal more skin, so many women are concerned about cellulite. While diet is the best way of ridding oneself of those annoying lumps and bumps, there are ways to minimize or camouflage them while you’re working on eating cleaner. Breanne Thibert of Artistic Spa recommends a series of three Universal Contour Wraps as a great way to boost self-esteem and get your body beachready. “Many of our clients use the inch-loss they experience through the treatments as a jump-start into a diet.” Wraps have a bad reputation as just eliminating water from the body instead of real inch loss. This system uses tensor bandages soaked in a mineral-rich solution, not plastic wrap, to achieve inch loss and skin tightening. “Waste removal decreases surface area of cellulite,” explains Thibert. I wanted to see the results for myself, so Thibert took my measurements, marking the spots for exact post-wrap measurements and comparison. Then she wrapped each of my limbs and torso with the soaked bandages. After an hour, Thibert unwrapped me and took measurements again. I lost 12.9 inches cumulatively over my body. I was especially pleased with the almost half-inch lost off each of my upper arms and thighs, making them appear smoother and more toned. Wanting to see if the results lasted, I asked Thibert to re-measure after a week’s time. Happily 10.5 inches had stayed away, helping me jump-start my quest for a better beach body. She cautions that to maximize and sustain Continued on page 60

results, you must avoid consuming alcohol, fatty foods, caffeinated beverages, sugar, salt and carbonated drinks. On Artistic’s Central Street premises, a sister business, Laser Anatomy, offers laser treatments that can help eliminate cellulite and wrinkles. Called Venus Legacy, this third-generation treatment system uses a laser to non-invasively stimulate collagen synthesis, lipolysis and neo-vascularity to reduce the signs of aging, contour the body and tighten skin. I almost dread the first summer trip to the beach as much as I look forward to it because of “chicken skin” on my legs. It’s that pale poultry colour cast by winter’s long shadow of darker days. Tempted by the promise of achieving an all-over golden glow, I hesitantly agreed to try a spray-on tan. Leery of having an overly orangey look, I was happy when Jodey Stevenson of Artistic Spa was able to deliver the promised golden glow using St.Tropez Tan, the same formula used by Dancing With The Stars. Stevenson explained that I shouldn’t shower the product off until the next morning and that using moisturizers will prolong the tan’s seven-to 10-day lifespan. Some women opt to wear their bathing suits or undergarments during treatment, while others prefer an all-over tan, says Stevenson. In addition to perking up my skin’s colour, Stevenson comments that St. Tropez also makes cellulite less noticeable because “it’s like putting on a pair of pantyhose, just making you a couple of shades darker and bringing everything in.” Just a quick stop at the pedicure station and I’ll be ready for summer from head to toe. travelstyle Windmill Lake Wake and Eco Park offers full range of yearround outdoor activities By Richard Young

L

ocated on 212 acres of forest and lake, Windmill Lake Wake and Eco Park is a unique eco-friendly outdoor recreation park on Ontario’s West Coast in Huron County that opened in May 2014. “In our first season we attracted over 1,000 visitors from surrounding communities and London, Toronto and other Ontario cities for day trips, as well as from far afield as British Columbia, the United States, Australia and England,” says Jen Pate, Windmill Lake’s co-owner and operator. This summer the park will offer a full range of water and outdoor activities including cable wakeboarding, kayaking and canoeing on the location’s 40-acre lake and guided nature walks in its forest. In January 2016, the park will offer snowshoeing, ice skating and pond hockey, cable snowboarding and other winter activities. “Our wakeboarding park is unique in that it is the first bi-level in Canada,

attracting professional wakeboarders and wakeskaters from around the world to film videos and host competitions,” says Pate. “Last summer we hosted the World Wakeskate Tour. We have also hosted our own wakeboarding competitions, and this summer we will be hosting the paddleboarding race for the Bayfield Wind and Water Festival, July 10 to 12.” For co-owners Andy Oke and Jen Pate, the park has been a long-time dream – and both bring a wealth of experience to the outdoor venture. They rent the land from Pate’s parents, who have been very supportive of the pair’s concept of an ecologically friendly outdoor recreation park that offers something for everyone. Oke is a long-time wakeboarder, surfer and kiteboarder. He is the cofounder and owner of Grand Bend’s Endless Surf shop (which will be relocating to Windmill Lake this summer). Also a long-time wakeboarder and paddleboarder, Pate is a certified WPA Instructor as well as a Level 1

and 2 PaddleFit coach. She also showcases worldwide expeditions as well as social and environmental responsibility projects with her film company, Your Frontier. “Windmill Lake provides the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy the outdoors while respecting the environment,” says Pate. “Look for our full-scale Dutch Windmill – North America’s only wind-driven saw and grist mill, designed after the world famous Arendt Windmill in Holland.” b

Health & Wellness Service legacy continues Grand Bend Family Dental’s state-of-the-art clinic offers complete dental care

G

rand Bend Family Dental has undergone some major changes in the past year, with a complete renovation and new dentists on staff, and co-owners Drs. Michael Rondinelli and Hesham Sherghin say they are honoured to carry on the 42-year legacy of service at the clinic. “Dr. Robert Clay was recruited to come to Grand Bend to serve an underserved community. He came to the area when nobody else would,” says Dr. Rondinelli. “We purchased the clinic from him over a year ago. He served the people of Grand Bend when there was nobody else here and we want to keep giving back to the community the same way he did.” The state-of-the-art family dental clinic provides all services to all ages – all under one roof. This includes, but is not limited to, on-site denture repairs, white fillings, cosmetic makeovers, wisdom teeth removal, sleep dentistry, and clear braces. “In the past year we have installed a paperless chart system, all new digital

X-ray machines, intraoral cameras, and oral cancer screening lights,” says Dr. Rondinelli. “We are really bringing a new modern age of dentistry to a small town. All this new technology will help patients have a better experience and a healthier mouth.” Dr. Rondinelli is also pleased to offer the services of Michael Levy and the Bluewater Denture Clinic on-site. Levy has been an area denturist for more than 20 years. “We are the only centre in the area to have both a denturist and a dentist onsite. This allows you to have a tooth out, filling, or anything you need done, but at the same time have a denturist fix your denture. It is a unique and necessary combination,” says Dr. Rondinelli. Grand Bend Family Dental offers convenient hours including evening and weekend appointments and always has special promotions running.

“Our current promotion for new patients is an exam, cleaning and X-rays, all for only $99 (retail $349),” says Dr. Rondinelli. “We really pride ourselves in providing all services done locally in the clinic. People in Grand Bend no longer have to be referred to an out-of-town specialist.” b
