SOMETHING LOST, SOMETHING FOUND

I

T’S become a prominent part of our contemporary consciousness, no longer whispered about in hushed tones but rather openly discussed; the strength of survivors celebrated and shared.

The symbols of cancer awareness permeate our everyday life, from pink fabric-wrapped trees and pink doeks, to shaved heads and technicolour-dyed hair. Everyone I know, without exception, has been touched by cancer. A few months ago I attended the launch of artist Jane Digby’s exhibition, which we wrote about in

Life & Style. Since it was two exhibitions in one, we didn’t have the space to truly delve into Jane’s collection for Hymn To Her, a multimedia showcase of hers’ and other artists’ works including prose, poetry, paintings and most notably a three-dimensional cube of photographs of Jane, taken by her daughter, while she was in the throes of breast cancer treatment. Symbolically lit from within, shining a literal light on the subject matter, it was unsettling, powerful, beautiful and memorable. It has haunted me ever since. With Chrissie Hynde’s song Hymn To Her playing on a loop in the background, it was an exhibition made even more powerful by those lyrics, echoing that while something is lost, something will inevitably, too, be found. While Jane’s exhibition was jarring, it chronicled the path she had walked with cancer, and how it had opened her eyes, her mind, and her

heart. While Life & Style is largely focused on uplifting, feel-good content, good features would hold no weight if they weren’t based in real life. And cancer is about as real as it gets. We are so fortunate to have contributors with the knowledge to inform some of the features in this issue, including a myth-busting article by GP Dr Rosie Carey on page six, as well as Kim Martin’s fascinating feature on supplementation and cancer on page five. While not entirely cancer-related, Marc Forrest celebrates the strides in life-changing tech in the healthcare industry on page four, and we draw your attention to your bad sunworshipping habits in our beauty feature on page 11, by offering aesthetic treatments for sun damage, as well as the best in sun protection products. (Don’t forget that if you have any serious skin concerns, it’s best you

@lifeandstyleballito

get those checked out by a dermatologist first, especially if you’re concerned about cancer. Early detection is half the battle won.) Reflecting on something serious always heightens our awareness of our own fragility. We tend to forget that we’re not invincible. Cancer doesn’t care who you are, how old you are, or how much money you have. It’s the ultimate equaliser. It puts things into perspective and prompts us to celebrate the small, cherished moments with our loved ones, so we’re choosing to celebrate life this month and, in the season of spring, new beginnings. On that note, it’s farewell from me as editor of Life & Style, as I shift focus professionally, but continuing to tell the stories of our beloved North Coast.

The studio was stripped of all surface equipment, acoustic panels and branding, leaving just a bare shell – a blank canvass, so to speak. People stopped and stared. Many were concerned that we were closing down. After all, there have been a number of commercial casualties countrywide in the current economy, so it could well have been a possibility. But bystanders gathered to discuss the fate of Ballito’s own radio station were soon to discover that what they were witnessing was not the death of a radio station, but

TAKE TO THE TREES

www.monkeylandkzn.co.za

A mere 20kms from the heart of Ballito, you’ll find Monkeyland KZN, the partner sanctuary to Plettenburg Bay’s famous Monkeyland, the world’s first free-roaming, multi-species primate sanctuary. Life & Style headed inland for an afternoon of adventure in their beautiful forest.

W

E were surprised by the range of emotion and experiences we were treated to at Monkeyland KZN. It certainly tugs at the heartstrings, but it’s also vastly informative, and at times, even hilarious.

A short drive on an open-air vehicle from the main reception area takes you to the 23-hectare forest, offering a dense canopy of trees and vegetation. We were greeted by a charming brownhooded capuchin, who greeted us with a toothy grin and Elvis Presley hair. He’s a new addition to the forest, and is still learning that he’s no longer someone’s pet. The North Coast is incredibly lucky to have been selected as the home for Monkeyland KZN, which opened its doors to the public in April. Not only is the sanctuary a major coup for the region’s tourism market, but it undertakes the important task of offering a naturalised home to a host of surrendered primates from across the globe. The various species are full of character and quirks, and they had us enthralled during our hour-and-a-half tour. The duration of the tours is quite relaxed, and guides are only happy to indulge all of your questions and comments. The gibbon couple, who are

unmistakable with their contrasting coloured coats – the female golden and her partner pitch black – are a particular highlight. They’ve been together for three decades, and are rarely seen separately. They’re even known for their cuddling and serenading each other in the early morning. It’s a strictly ‘notouch’ policy at Monkeyland KZN, as the mission is one of education for a greater understanding of our primate cousins and the threats they face from the pet trade, bush meat trade, and deforestation among others. The ‘monkey safaris’

SUPPLEMENTS & CANCER TREATMENT: Dietitian Kim Wilson offers sound advice on the latest research around supplementation and cancer.

ANY herbal, vitamin and mineral supplements boast potent anticancer activity. However, when it comes to adding supplements to your cancer treatment, we need to know what’s safe.

supplements, first consult your oncologist.

Vitamin C Vitamin C is an essential nutrient which aids in removing free radicals from the body. It has been linked in laboratory studies to decreased cancer cell growth in prostate, pancreatic, liver, colon, and nerve cell cancers. It can be taken orally or intravenously, with intravenous vitamin C being more efficient at increasing blood concentrations. High-dose vitamin C appears to be well tolerated and safe when used in conjunction with traditional treatment according to clinical trials. It also has been reported in two studies to improve quality of life and decrease risk for cancer-related toxicities. Turmeric or Curcumin Curcumin is the antioxidant component derived from turmeric root. There are multiple studies suggesting curcumin’s anti-cancer properties. It has been shown to decrease the expression of various cell-signaling and inflammatory components that are necessary for cancer cell growth and proliferation. Human trials have demonstrated that curcumin is safe and well-tolerated alongside traditional therapy. The only

time you need to take note of turmeric supplements is if you are on blood thinning medication as turmeric may interfere with this.

Probiotics A balanced gut bacterium is vital for overall health, and an imbalance may contribute to disease or impaired immune system functioning. Probiotic supplementation has been shown to modify the gut bacteria of patients with cancer. Correcting gut bacteria balance in animal studies has also been shown to modulate cancer cell growth. Further human trials are needed, but the hypothesis is that probiotic supplements may have positive effects on cancer prevention and treatment. Probiotics are widely marketed as safe for improving the health of individuals with a variety of disease conditions. They have been shown to significantly reduce chemotherapyinduced diarrhea, the rate of infection following surgery for colon cancer patients, and the rate of mucositis in head and neck cancer patients. Targeted probiotic supplementation to restore imbalances in the gut may be beneficial for cancer patients. Cannabidiol or CBD Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many cannabinoids found in both hemp and marijuana plants. There are some promising studies showing that

cannabinoids can reduce tumour growth, as well as enhance the potency and uptake of certain cancer drugs. As an adjunct to cancer treatment CBD may reduce symptoms of pain, nausea and loss of appetite. CBD has a good safety profile. The few side effects that occur with CBD may be due to interactions with other medications, and include increased appetite, diarrhoea, fatigue and weight change. Current advice is that CBD shouldn’t be used as a replacement for other cancer treatment. We need research into the interaction with cancer and cancer treatment. It is important to note that CBD can interfere with the metabolism of certain medications, and you should speak to your doctor before introducing it to your regime.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to cancer and supporting your immune system with targeted supplements, the few mentioned above are merely a drop in the ocean. You must discuss your options with your medical practitioner, and make an informed decision. Finally, it is our opinion that there should be no protocol that doesn’t take into account your diet, environmental exposures, lifestyle, and mental health and wellbeing.

Common CANCER Myths BUSTED

C

ANCER is such an emotive word that it often comes with a whole host of myths attached to it. Let’s try to separate the fact from fiction…

• Cancer is not a death sentence

There was a time when the diagnosis of cancer was tantamount to a death sentence, but that is no longer the case. The likelihood of dying from cancer has decreased steadily since the early 1990’s. The decrease in cancer mortality can be attributed to earlier diagnosis (cancer survival is very dependent on how advanced the cancer is at diagnosis, which is why screening for cancer is so important) and also better treatment. • Cancer is not contagious This should be general knowledge, but it’s not, so let me reiterate: cancer is not contagious. Although cancer is not contagious, there are certain viruses, such as Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), that have been linked to cancer and that can be spread from person to person. Only a small percentage of people with HPV will go on to develop cancer and that is most

Wha ts your app hea que lth s 185 tions to 1471 071 . Ros ie Th Catch D ursd r 88F ays M at on 3:30 pm

likely the result of the interplay between their individual immune systems and the virus. • Cancer surgery or biopsy of a tumour causes it to spread Yes, this is possible, but the benefit of having the biopsy or surgery, when performed by a well-trained surgeon, far outweighs the risk of potential spread as a result of the surgery. • Someone in my family has cancer, so I am likely to get it too Once again, there is a measure of truth in this. There are certain cancers, such as breast cancer and colon cancer that can have a strong genetic link, but not all cancers are genetic. Only about five-10 percent of cancers are caused by a hereditary genetic mutation. The remaining 90-95 percent of cancers are spontaneous cancers and the causes are usually multifactorial. • Substances commonly thought to cause cancer (but that actually don’t) The following substances

are commonly reported to cause cancer but so far there is no validated scientific evidence to prove a link between the substance and cancer: *Artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame, sucralose and acesulfame potassium. *Deodorants or antiperspirants *Hair dyes (although there is some evidence that hairdressers who are regularly exposed to large volumes of hair dye and chemical products may have an increased risk of bladder cancer). *Power lines: the electromagnetic energy emitted by power lines is a low-frequency form of radiation that does not damage genes. *The verdict is still out on cellphones although to date there is no hard evidence to prove a link between cellphones and cancer. • Chemotherapy (treatment for cancer) will make you bald or kill you Yes, it can, but not in all cases (and in most cases will save your life). Lots of the chemotherapy given today is far less harmful and potent than the chemotherapy regimes of the past. Certain forms may make you lose your hair and other types may make you very ill, but different cancers require different chemotherapy and just because someone you know had chemotherapy and suffered terribly, it doesn’t mean that that is necessarily the case for all cancers and all forms of chemotherapy. Cancer is never a nice diagnosis, but let’s not make it worse by spreading false information. If in doubt, speak to your doctor.

PLANTING a

D

EATH is a subject that most people are uncomfortable talking about. It’s not that we don’t know or understand that death is an inevitability for all of us. Perhaps, like children, we think that by not confronting the issue, we won’t have to face it. Whatever the reasons, at some point in time, death became a taboo subject where polite conversation is concerned.

We, at Cemetrees.com on the other hand, actively encourage discussion between family and friends about this important subject. Death really does not need to be an uncomfortable or awkward conversation. For example, have you thought about what you want your loved ones to do with your ashes after your passing? Do your loved ones know your wishes and do you know theirs’? There has been much publicity in the media recently about the critical shortage of burial space in South Africa, and in KZN in particular. Existing burial methods are traditionally set by different religions. However, in a time when more and more people are not obligated to religious traditions, the idea of alternative burial techniques is fast gaining momentum.

Cremation, owing to the lack of traditional burial space for coffins beneath tombstones, is the obvious choice. However, what if you could combine that with a way of giving back to the planet and helping to solve another pressing issue, that of deforestation? Climate change is another reality that many people are aware of yet remain either unwilling or unsure of how to contribute to in a positive manner. Cemetrees.com, a Ballito based company, sell a biodegradable funeral urn designed to take human (or pets) ashes and use them to fertilise and grow a tree. In this way, one is not only solving the issue of lack of burial space but also giving back to nature by adding more trees and plants to the environment. Saying goodbye to a loved one is never easy. Whilst nothing could ever replace a life that’s lost, choosing a planting for your home or garden is a powerful way to remember that special bond. A tree or plant is a living memorial – a way to express love that has not ended with death. It becomes a celebration of life. Born and educated in Adelaide, South Australia, Andrew holds Bachelors degrees in both exercise and sports science as well as physiotherapy, but the academic credentials don’t end there: he holds a Masters Degree in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy and has been granted the title Sports Physiotherapist by the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Your Hair Questions, ANSWERED Internationally acclaimed award-winning stylist Nikolas Michael’s salon secrets used by the professionals... Q: I’ve noticed that hair product bottle labels always say “for best results”, use a companion product from the same brand. Does it really make a difference? It is always better to use the same brand of shampoo and conditioner as technologies are designed to work together for optimum results. However I've often recommended a combination of brands as that can sometimes be beneficial. Coty brands can be inter-mixed and still work at optimum levels. Q: What’s the best product for frizzy, dry, damaged, brittle hair and for keeping my hair sleek against humidity? Hair that is naturally dry and frizzy is unruly and we have a number of products that can help soften and smooth it. The Oil Reflections range by Wella is fabulous. However when hair is chemically and mechanically damaged as well as unruly, it’s usually the System Professional range I lean towards. After assessing the hair we will decide on a conditioner and then find a shampoo that will help counter the secondary problem. This will be accompanied by either a wearable treatment and oil combination or serum, depending on the energy code we created. Q: What is the best dry shampoo and how do you use it effectively? That's a no-brainer for us - hands down the Nioxin Dry Shampoo is an absolute champion. It’s light, creates volume and is by far the most popular dry shampoo in store.

WELLBEING

lifeandstyle.co.za

This month we tried…

Usain Bolt does it, Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio swears by it, and it sounds too good to be true: 20 minutes of ‘gym’ time with the benefits of a five-hour workout. That’s the beauty of Body20. We got plugged in at the Ballito Junction branch.

In-patient physical rehabilitation hospital providing medical care, acute and sub-acute rehabilitation treatment for people with a wide range of disabilities caused by illness or injuries.

Returning to life at home and in the community can be a real challenge when illness or injury leaves you with temporary or permanent impairment and disability. The team at Nurture Ballito are here to help you. Our interdisciplinary staff of highly qualified medical professionals, tailor unique treatment plans centred around your needs and focus on achieving your highest level of functioning and independence. Coupled with our nurturing environment and extensive range of rehabilitation services, we aim to guide you through the complexity and confusion and ultimately see you re-adjust and thrive in your new reality. We believe that everyone deserves to feel their best. +27 (0)32 648 0015 ballito@nurturehealth.net Ingenuity Park, 3 Nandi Mthembu Drive, Ballito, 4420.

E

MS or electro-muscular stimulation may sound torturous, but it’s a cutting-edge wellness trend. Your body naturally emits electrical impulses to your muscles, and in a sense, this is no different.

Step one at Body 20 Ballito is a full ‘InBody’ assessment from a magical machine that accurately gauges your (eek) weight – broken down into a percentage of body fat, protein, water and minerals – your waist-to-hip ratio, muscle definition and, crucially, your basal metabolic rate. Next, you’ll be fitted with a lycra suit (don’t worry, it’s quite flattering) and your trainer will begin strapping you into a waistcoat-like suit with various Velcro straps and bands housing electrodes strapped on to major muscle groups. These are dampened with warm water as the water is a conduit. Next you’ll head to the workout room where your trainer attaches you to the machine and briefs you. You’ll be handed a pair of dumbbells, or soft stress balls, and the process begins with a rhythmic pulse of the current as you perform basic exercises. Your trainer guides you through a

series of movements from squats and dumbbell lifts, to core contractions, all while the pulses target your muscles. The sensation is not painful, and feels more like a moderate vibration than an electric charge. Your heart rate will not increase significantly, but after 20 minutes you’ll feel like you’ve had a proper workout without breaking much of a sweat. (Make-up still intact!) If you suffer from joint pain or battle with any exercise where there’s impact to the body, Body 20 is a great way to build muscle tissue with no jarring. It’s been used in people with multiple sclerosis to stimulate and build their muscles (obviously speak to your physician first), and can help with improving posture, correcting muscle imbalances, and enhancing your basal metabolic rate, which is the average rate at which you burn energy throughout your day. Body20 is largely safe to use, but is contra-indicated in certain conditions such as epilepsy, so chat to your doctor first. Speak to a trainer at Body20 Ballito Ballito Junction. 032 586 1011 or ballito@body20.co.za

The transformation

T

hanks to a lifetime of smoking and having lost 20kg via a banting diet, Bernice du Plessis, looked a lot older than a woman in her mid 60s. Fortunately, kykNET’s Mooimaak team lead by Skin Renewal’s Dr. Dalize Willemse and therapist Johandi Koch, couldwork their magic to improve her deep-set wrinkles. NOT YOUR AVERAGE FACIAL

THE INJECTION OF YOUTH Another way the Mooimaak team tackled Bernice’s wrinkles was via a 3D Liquid Facelift. It involves using botulinum toxin injections to relax wrinkles in the upper half of the face while hyaluronic acid dermal fillers plump up those in the bottom half as well as areas that have lost volume. The result is a much smoother-looking complexion.

A LITTLE LIFT Bernice was a great candidate for a non-surgical neck lift that involved using threads to lift up her sagging skin. Dr. Dalize used three different types of threads to create an immediate ‘lifted look’ that improves over time as they also encourage skin to produce more of its own collagen. Bernice was completely thrilled with her transformation and we think you’ll agree that her new, much smoother complexion is most definitely a look to love.

As Bernice’s skin was in dire need of more skin-plumping collagen she was given a series of Carboxy-Laser facial treatments that include carboxytherapy, Laser Genesis and a glycolic peel. Each of the treatments simulated collagen while the peel revealed new, fresh skin; the laser accelerates healing and carboxytherapy improved circulation.

SUN DAMAGE Who remembers slathering baby oil on to tan in the summer? We all (should) know better by now, but for most of us the damage has been done. If you’re a recovering sun worshipper, we asked the experts for the best procedures and treatments on the aesthetic beauty market.

S

ADLY, there’s no quick fix for age and sun-related damage to our skin. The experts at Skin Renewal Umhlanga believe that the best results are obtained with combination therapy. Your aesthetic clinician should combine several to form a solution package; then you’ll start seeing results.

There are some high-tech solutions available these days. Here’s what the aesthetic experts at Skin Renewal suggest: 1) Chemical Peels: Depending on the severity of your sun damage, a specific peel should be prescribed on consultation. For mild to moderate sun damage an Azelaic peel, Ferulic peel, SAMA peel or Radiance peel will be good options. These are quick, minimal downtime peels that gently exfoliate dead skin cells from the superficial layers of the skin with minimal discomfort. The

costs range between about R900 and R2 000, depending on the peel and area treated and can be done every two-three weeks. For severe sun-damaged skin deeper peels such as TCA peels are needed to exfoliate slightly deeper and to stimulate more biological processes. These peels may be slightly more uncomfortable and have two-five days of downtime. 2) Limelight: An IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment that targets sunspots and sun-induced pigmentation specifically by breaking up and then lifting the pigment particles. Treatment costs can range between R1 500 – R3 000 depending on the size of the area. Before and after the treatment, the therapist will cool the area to minimize discomfort. The procedure is under an hour, but has two-three days of downtime where the skin might be

slightly red and sensitive. Two-three treatments are normally needed to achieve desired results and can be done every four weeks. 3) Laser genesis: This is a versatile option for an array of concerns caused by excessive sun exposure, such as fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and discolorations as well as any textural irregularities. The laser works by gently heating the different layers of the skin to activate certain processes, stimulate collagen production and increase skin cell turnover rate, resulting in a smoother brighter complexion. Laser genesis is a comfortable treatment. Price and duration of the treatment depends on the amount of shots being fired at the skin and can vary between R1 000 – R2 000. Normally between six-10 sessions are needed depending on the severity of your concern. 4) Fraxel: Ground-breaking fractional laser treatment that focuses on improving the signs of ageing and sun damage such as fine lines, wrinkles, discolouration and textural irregularities. It works by strengthening existing collagen as well as stimulating the production of new healthy collagen. Textural and pigmentary improvements can be seen in as little as three-four weeks, ultimate results are visible three-six months post treatment. It can be slightly uncomfortable so a topical anesthetic is applied 30 minutes prior. The cost of the treatment depends on the size of the treatment area as well as the amount of passes done and can vary between R5 200 – R11 000 per treatment. Depending on the severity of the concern between onefour treatments might be needed.
