S I write this piece from my reverie in Ballito, I am a little distracted by the constant presence of Otis, the youngest member of the family who has his mind set on a walk and, as he generally gets his way, despite my rapidly approaching deadline, this will probably happen.

The sea is impossibly blue today. It was grey yesterday so this is an interesting surprise. It is also as calm as a millpond. This hardly seems possible when yesterday is was more like an angry washing machine, but such is life. Storms and tempests pass and the sun shines again. I had a really super cup of coffee in the Market at the Lifestyle Centre before doing my radio show this morning and I watched people interacting as they do every day this busy collective. I enjoy watching people here

– it gives me an idea of what’s happening in the bubble that is Ballito. I am constantly reminded by the myriad of connected devices that carry messages to me that this is not the real world. No, the real world is apparently collapsing in a heap, torn apart by racial hatred, violence, fear, greed and crime. It’s a horrible place and I feel for those who live there. I was at a memorial service last week for a friend who used to write for us. This was the third member of our Life & Style convocation to make the transition and, when I think of them, as I often do, I am reminded of their dreams and hopes and fears for the future. We all have them to a greater or lesser degree and I am also aware that there are three types of people in the world – those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who

wonder what happened. Apparently the vast majority of us fall into the latter two categories which is why we are so easily influenced by what we hear and see and why we make so little effort to verify this information. Our perception is our reality. If you believe we are heading for disaster, you have to get off the bus. Similarly, if you feel good about things, the world is wonderful, wherever you are. Of course, there are those who will say that this is a naïve and irresponsible way to look at things. I suppose it is, but is it better to live in constant fear, anger and resentment than to relax and enjoy the ride? I need to go now – Otis is getting restless, but I leave you with a thought, actually it’s a prayer, and even if you have no faith, I believe it will help you through the darkness.

It was written many years ago by an American theologian called Reinhold Niebuhr and it goes like this:

Hi Everyone! Happy rest-of-February! Good to have that extra day this year – being a Leap! And leaping into the month…

MIDMAR -The weekend of February 8 saw us joining the car loads of swimming fanatics heading up to Midmar Dam from Ballito, in the pouring rain, to join the crowd of 13,000 fellow swimmers. We waded in through the leaves and mud (at the start of the race) and emerged through a different section of leaves, mud and huffers and puffers at the other end of the dam after victoriously completing the 1.6 km swim. Many of us trained for the race in our gorgeous sea pools. People come from miles away to swim in them. Hopefully the powers that be will come to their senses and put some sort of policing in place at the pools to avoid reef fish poaching and unruly behaviour!

CULTIVATING CONFIDENCE!

Sarah Swainson, who heads up SarahElizabeth Lingerie and who is a partner in Pawfect (pet stuff generally) and is a big mover and shaker on the running front locally, was the guest speaker at a networking event recently and gave some sound advice on cultivating confidence. “Strong women know that success lies in mastering the the ordinary. Embrace the journey, turn challenges on their head and cultivate continues confidence.” Said Sarah.

ANTI-VIRAL NUTRITION SUPPORT

W

Dietitian Kim Wilson

E’VE all had colds and flu before. So we know that these viruses are pretty common, and tend not to be life-threatening when we take the time to properly rest and recover.

That being said, with the Coronavirus taking hold overseas we all want to make sure our health is primed for success.

Immune Support 101

The immune system is our body’s main line of defence against bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that try to cultivate infections in us. Every single part of our bodies—including the lymphatic system, cardiovascular system, skin, GI tract, sexual reproductive tract and airways—is lined with immune cells.

6 Simple Strategies to keep your Immune System Strong:

1.Exercise regularly: Moderate intensity exercise such as brisk walking helps the immune system fight respiratory viruses. Aim for at least 20 minutes daily. 2.Sleep well: People who sleep less than 6 hours per night are 4x more likely to pick up infections. 3.Get enough Vitamin D: if you’re not able to spend regular time in the sun, aim for a Vitamin D supplement of at least 800 – 1000IU daily. 4.Reduce stress: regularly engaging in hobbies that you enjoy increases levels of cytokines, an immune system protein that helps the body fight illness, 5.Eat well: load up on nutrientdense foods such as fruits and vegetables, and avoid refined sugars and trans fats (found in processed foods). 6.Take care of your gut health. Include fermented foods or a probiotic supplement regularly to keep your gut bacteria healthy.

Anti-Viral Herbs, Vitamins and Minerals ►HERBS Since ancient times, herbs have been used as natural treatments for various conditions and illnesses, including viral infections. •Elderberry. The common black elderberry has long been used to reduce the length and severity of flu symptoms. It has been purported that Elderberry extract binds to the tiny spikes on the surface of the virus (that are used to invade healthy cells), and destroys them to make the virus ineffective. •Echinacea. Echinacea is one of the most popular herbs taken for the

immune system. Several studies have suggested that echinacea is particularly effecting at fighting viral infections such as herpes and influenza. • Garlic. Garlic is popularly used for a wide variety of conditions, including viral infections. Studies have shown that garlic enhances the immune system by stimulating protective immune cells that safeguard against viral infections. • Oregano. A plant compound found in oregano, carvacrol, offers antiviral properties. In studies oregano and it’s extract has been shown to exhibit antiviral activity against herpes, rotavirus and respiratory syncytial virus (which causes respiratory infections). • Olive Leaf. Olive leaf contains oleuropein, which is able to stop viruses in their tracks. It neutralizes the enzymes that enable viruses to replicate and spread.

minerals beneficial for the immune system include magnesium, selenium, vitamin K, and folate. Eat a nutrient-rich diet, or consider a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement to meet your daily requirements.

Final Thoughts

Make sure that you take practical steps on a daily basis to improve your immune health. Eat a healthy diet, exercise more, stress less, sleep more, spend time in the sun, and take care of your gut health. Over and above these actions, should your body pick up a virus there are evidence-backed

supplements you can arm yourself with to fight back.

► VITAMINS AND MINERALS A truly healthy immune system depends on a regular, balanced intake of vitamins and minerals over time. • Vitamin C. Vitamin C is thought to increase the production of white blood cells. These are important in fighting infections. Because your body doesn't produce or store vitamin c, you need daily sources for continued health. Food sources include citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, berries, spinach and more. If you’re going to supplement look for a bio-available form such as Ester-C or Lypospheric Vitamin C. • Vitamin E. Vitamin E is important for a healthy immune system. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it requires the presence of fats to be adequately absorbed. Nuts and seeds, such as almonds or sunflower seeds, are good sources of this vitamin. • Vitamin B6. This vitamin is vital to the formation of new and healthy red blood cells. Bone broths, turkey and chicken are good sources of vitamin B6. Alternatively stock up on a good B-Complex for your daily needs. • Zinc. Zinc doesn’t always get as much attention as other nutrients, but our bodies need it so that our immune cells can function properly. Good food sources include shellfish, but you can also look for a daily supplement containing 8mg (for women), or 11mg (for men. • Other. Other vitamins and

Dr Rosie Carey

A

CCORDING to some sources, 2019 was the second hottest year on record since the recording of temperatures became standard in 1880. Analyses also show that the five hottest years on record have been the five years beginning in 2015. It certainly feels like this is true at the moment! I don’t think I can remember a hotter summer than this one. In Ballito, we feel the heat even more because of the additive effect of the humidity. The body’s natural cooling mechanism- sweating- is rendered partially ineffective in high humidity as the high levels of moisture in the air prevent adequate evaporation of sweat. So, what are the dangers of the high temperatures and how do we survive the heat?

WHAT IS HEATSTROKE?

Heatstroke is a condition caused by overheating of the body’s core temperature, usually either as a result of prolonged exposure to high temperatures or as a result of physical exertion in high temperatures. Untreated heatstroke can damage your brain, kidneys and heart and the longer treatment is delayed, the higher your risk of developing serious complications. Symptoms of heatstroke can range from mild to severe and may include nausea and/or vomiting, raised heart rate, flushed skin, confusion,

lifeandstyle.co.za

SURVIVING THE HEAT

delirium, slurred speech, coms, rapid breathing and headache. If you suspect someone has heatstroke it is imperative to get them to a doctor as soon as possible. Until they are able to reach medical help, move them indoors or into the shade, remove any excess clothing and try to cool them down. Effective ways to cool someone down include immersing them in water, wetting their clothes or covering them with wet towels and then fanning them.

Some tips to prevent heatstroke:

1) Avoid being outdoors during the worst heat of the day (10am to 3pm). Try to hit the beach before midday or later in the afternoon. Be especially aware when it’s slightly cloudy or windy as it can still be as hot, but you

may be lulled into a false sense of security by the cloud cover or wind. 2) Always make sure that you stay adequately hydrated. Ideally aim for 500ml of non-alcoholic fluid per hour. You may want to add an electrolyte solution to your drink if you are sweating excessively as this will help with the absorption of fluids and maintain your blood pressure, which can drop in the heat. 3) Wear thin, light-coloured clothing as protection from the sun and make sure that skin areas that are exposed are covered in sunblock (preferably marinefriendly). 4) Avoid alcoholic drinks. Alcohol exacerbates the effects of the heat and increases the risk of severe heatstroke.

Wha your t hea sapp l to 0 71 1 th ques t 85 1 Dr R 471. ions os Catc Tues ie & Dr h Ph days on 8 ilippa 8FM 10.3 at 0am

Drinking alcohol can affect your body’s ability to regulate temperature and also dehydrate you, worsening the symptoms of heatstroke. 5) Do a drug check: some medications can increase the risk for severe heatstroke. These include diuretics, some blood pressure medications and stimulants such as the medications used for treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Recreational drugs such as amphetamines and cocaine also make you more vulnerable to heatstroke. 6) Take extra care of young children and pets who aren’t able to tell you that they are overheating, and never leave children or pets in a parked car as this is a common cause of heat-related deaths! 7) Plan to exercise or do physical activity in the early morning or late afternoon, once the worst heat of the day has passed. Exercising in the heat can very quickly lead to heatstroke. Hopefully these tips will see you through the remainder of this very warm summer, safely. We are certainly privileged to live so close to the beach, but with the wonderful outdoor lifestyle that Ballito promises come certain risks and we have a responsibility to acknowledge these and prioritize our health.

HELPFUL FACTS about LOW BACK PAIN Andrew Leipus

T

Low back pain remains a poorly managed and common problem despite the range of practitioners and information available online. A key reason why it becomes persistent and recurrent is due to people being poorly informed and ultimately adapting unhealthy behaviours and beliefs, which can influence behavioural and psychological responses to pain.

HE British Journal of Sports Medicine recently published an open-access list of ten (10) researched points that everyone, including the health care professionals, should know. So to make the right decisions about your healthcare you need to have all of the facts;

082 484 3839 admin@movephysio.co.za The Circle, Douglas Crowe Drive, Ballito www.movephysio.co.za

1) Most back pain isn’t a serious life threatening condition – despite the discomfort and impact, it is very unlikely that you will end up in wheelchair or die because of it. 2) Back pain episodes do improve and do not need to become more prevalent or deteriorate as you get older. 3) Persistent back pain is more related to a negative mind-set, fear avoidance behaviour and poor management strategies than actual underlying tissue damage. 4) Scans do not determine the prognosis of the current episode of pain nor predict future episodes. They are not usually needed unless medical red flags are suspected.

5) The spine is made to move in all directions and encouraging this movement should be a healthy part of all recovery programs. Pain related to movement does not mean tissue damage is being done. Too many back pain sufferers are quite literally scared to move. 6) Back pain is not caused by poor posture during sitting, standing or lifting – there is actually no robust research to correlate this common belief. 7) A weak ‘core’ does not cause back pain and often a relaxation of the overactive or ‘braced’ trunk muscles is required. However, staying strong through the trunk, pelvis and lower body is a big part of rehabilitation. 8) Progressive loading of the spine is actually healthy, safe and builds resilience, not ‘wear and tear’ as is often believed. We ‘wrinkle’ on the inside as well! 9) Intermittent pain flare-ups represent an increased sensitivity in the tissues rather than increased structural

damage. This sensitivity can be due to changes in activity, mood, or even stress. 10) Invasive treatments such as injections and surgery are very rarely required. Management of back pain is relatively cheap, safe, and effective if it is patient-centred with encouragement of physical and mental well-being at the centre of it. You will notice that ‘passive or manual therapies’ were not directly listed in the article. These mostly provide short-term relief and often drive dependency on the practitioner. Contemporary back pain management aims to develop patient confidence and a positive mindset to move into variable postures, to expose the body to graded loading, to return to physical activity, and ultimately to live a healthier lifestyle. This may help reduce distress and build self-efficacy for people to better self-manage, and enable patients to make better-informed decisions about their care.

The Renewal Institute offers two versions of this quenching treatment, which include, The Hydra Touch Facial and the Premium Hydra Touch Facial. The Hydra Touch Facial includes hydro-dermabrasion, a peel infusion with either an AHA or BHA, transdermal mesotherapy using a hydrating serum, skin tightening and a hydrating mask. The Premium version offers the same as the original treatment but uses both AHA and BHA, adds another layer of hydration via a moisture infusion and replaces the hydrating mask with an alginate mask.

Hydro-dermabrasion is a mild yet effective way to exfoliate. Instead of using crystals, water jets are used to rid the complexion of dead, dry skin cells that can clog pores and dull natural glow. The result is a smoother, more radiant-looking skin. Transdermal mesotherapy involves the use of a cutting-edge electroporation device, which uses electrical pulses (not to electric shocks) to gently and painlessly deliver a hydrating serum into the deeper layers of your skin via its water channels. The effects of a Hydra Touch Facial are instant, leaving the skin immediately soft, supple and beautifully hydrated, even after the first treatment. For the best results, however, a series of four to six treatments are recommended.

To find out more about the Hydra Touch Facial or to schedule a consult with one of the doctors on the Skin Renewal team for an individual assessment, visit Skin Renewal on www.skinrenewal.co.za or contact 0861 SKIN SA (754 672).

T

WO weekends back I had the pleasure of attending the annual Midmar Mile swimming event which has been running for over 45 years.

Much has changed from the 80s when I first was involved with water safety for the event. There were fewer swimmers and water safety officials then and now there are 13000 swimmers taking part in the event over two days which is quite a feat to control. My mates were laughing off the event saying that it’s flat water so what could possibly go wrong… pretty boring for a jet ski operator compared to working in the surf! Yes, the surf might require more driving skill, but the mile has a whole other set of conditions with lots more people watching. They say one’s eye sight and hearing tends to wear out with age, which is true, but I sat out on my jet ski thinking how alert one’s senses need to be and how my own have become fine-tuned over the years, allowing me to pick up so much more and pick out trouble amongst hundreds of swimmers in the water. How far can one take safety is another question I asked myself with each year getting bigger and better and the coverage put out there is something I have never seen any ware else in the world. The Mile this year had over 20 different rescue and maritime services covering the event and I estimated that there were around 200 personnel lining the course from lifeguards on rescue surfboards and stand up paddle boards to personnel on jet skis and boats. Even the navy was there with a boat that could be classed as a ship, and all coordinated to absolute perfection. Safety was not spared and a big plus was

the introduction of the inflatable swim buoy that most of the swimmers wore allowing them to hold onto and rest at stages of the course. This, without a doubt, assisted hundreds to reach the finish. It was amusing watching swimmers positioning this swim buoy under, over, behind their heads and between their legs, assisting them in various methods of rest so that they could gain enough strength to continue on to the end point. For me the first 200m was the critical zone with so much splashing, shouting and hand gestures going on until the field settled down I found it exhausting work trying to pin point someone really in need of help. Cramp was one of the common incidents and so was the number who suffered panic attacks as a result of the hundreds of swimmers at the start of each batch released every 3 minutes, catching up and swimming into or over those slower swimmers knocking off goggles and swim caps, causing major problems for the safety teams. Every aspect of the event was monitored closely by these units with a full search and rescue team of divers and specialised sniffer dogs on standby to detect a person under water. So, what gives a trained lifeguard special the ability to spot trouble in the water? I believe that the body’s senses can fine tune themselves and, over time, can master certain skills and in my case (even with the challenges of age) I have the eyes of a hawk when it comes to picking out trouble in the water. The 2020 Mile passed without any serious incident which is an amazing result and thanks must go out to all those water safety people who gave their time and skills to ensure a safe and fulfilled event. See you in the water next year.

A L L O H H EY Q&A WITH

HOLLA FOUNDER, NIC JORDAN We interviewed Holla Trails Founder, Nic Jordan, to find out more about how Holla started, the vibe, his favourite routes and more... How and why did you start Holla Trails? I was riding around the farms with friends and more and more people started joining us and we were worried farmers would stop us from riding there, so I started toying with idea of creating a trail system. When a young lady cyclist sadly got run over and killed on the M4, I realised riders needed somewhere safe to ride. How involved are you at Holla these day? Are you hands on? I am very involved in the strategy and the philosophy of Holla Trails as well as how the trails should be presented. I guess you could say I fine tune the experience ;) I am quite particular about how the business is run so I often go past the trail head and give input and we hold a bi-weekly management meeting. Holla has such a nice vibe at the trail head and coffee shop, how have you managed to create this energy? To be honest we have such a cool, hardworking and fun crew at Holla. This combined with everyone always being so happy when they come for a run or ride creates the atmosphere. I often say its such a nice place to work as you so seldom

Nic Jordan

generates and the impact it has made in so many people’s lives from simple joy to the dramatic, where it's had huge health improvements for people. We are a community and seeing happy faces, friendships cultivated and knowing we have been the catalyst for that, brings great satisfaction. What initiatives have you taken to make Holla more eco-conscious? We have a philosophy of "choose single track not single use" so we don't provide takeaway cups anymore and we only sell water in glass bottles. You can purchase a re-usable Holla branded glass coffee cup at the trail head if you do wish to take your coffee on the go! What has been your biggest challenge with Holla from a business point of view? Running Holla has quite big overheads and the first 6-7 years was spent just trying to break even. While in the beginning it was started as a passion we still had to have a bakkie of guys on the trails early every morning. Holla Trails only exists because of the goodwill of a large number of farmers and while it's their generosity that allows the trails to exist, how wonderful is it that so many people support the system and always

The Holla Trails Team

see anyone grumpy so our job is just have a valid permit indemnifying the encouraging the team to have fun and farmers when riding, even though it's good banter with the clients. so easy to access illegally if they want What is your favourite route? That's to? a tough one. I love certain parts of different routes. The last bit of the I never would have imagined what an Pink long single track is unbelievably amazing bunch of people we would fun riding, the Red single track is have attracted and how big it has so beautiful and totally underrated become in 10 year. With over 370kms and the Maroon is a dream for trail of trails, I believe we are the biggest running. network of trails in South Africa! Are you a trail runner or cyclist or both? Both! What community projects are you involved in through Holla? Snipr - We have provided the funding for an intersection to be covered by number plate recognition cameras that identifies stolen or suspect vehicles and makes the area safer for all reasons but particularly for the farmers and their staff who let us run our trails through their farms. We have also worked with Osizweni School from the very start where we do grounds and some building maintenance.
