BALLITO TO UMHLANGA

From BALLITO, WITH LOVE

W

HAT a few weeks it’s been for South Africa, with devastating lows and euphoric highs. I don’t think I need to reiterate the lows. I’d rather focus on our sisters in the Western Cape in particular, who turned tragedy around and marched en masse for the rights of South Africa’s women and children. They are a testament to our resilience. We are fighters. We are also bound together by the many levels of our historic trauma, but what truly lifted my spirits as we head into this Heritage month, has been the resounding sounds of South African success stories.

21 Sept: Bok in Ballito

It’s his first performance in Ballito since becoming a local, so come and support him! Tickets cost R160 and you can book via musiekunlimited.co.za

One of my personal heroes, Laduma Ngxokolo, (I’m an Eastern Cape girl at heart) just received a standing ovation at New York Fashion Week with his exquisite Xhosa-inspired knitwear and beaded garments. Incidentally, I had just read a thoughtful profile piece on him. The editor of the publication asked him what kind of legacy he would like to leave behind. He commented, without the slightest hint of ego, that he only hoped to leave behind the notion that Africa can, and is, producing beautiful luxury products; that our continent has unique value, talent, and superb craftmanship. When I sat down to interview Lunga Ntuli, he was celebrating his birthday, and had just returned from Africa Fashion Week in London, showcasing his own brand of unique craftsmanship. Just the day before, he had been doing a walkabout with a CNN film crew, plus he’s published five books, all with ‘love’ in mind. He is also the creator of LN Watches, utilising the deeply symbolic Zulu beaded love

‘letters’ as the watch straps, hence his debut in London. Not bad for someone who was guarding cars on Ballito’s beaches not too long ago. (See page seven for our interview with Lunga.) We bonded over our admiration for Mr. Ngxokolo’s successes, but as we parted ways I had an inkling Lunga might be on a similar trajectory. (The two have already met.) I also had the chance to chat to Kenyan-born Catherine Wanjohi recently, whose story you can read on page six. She fell for Ballito while on holiday here; in fact, the family fell so hard they went home to pack their bags and came straight back! Her local fashion label, Zinge Afrika, is a melting pot of African cultures, celebrating the fabrics and traditions of various countries and turning them into vibrant clothing and accessories. Growing up in Nairobi, Catherine says she has always been big on repurposing, as is Catherine Oliver of Wylder Jane Designs, who we spoke to about the restoration of Seaton Estate’s original manor house. This centuryold property in Sheffield was in need of major repairs, but it took the team of contractors just three months to fully restore it. It now serves as the club house for the new estate. We spoke about the project with Catherine on page five, where she lovingly explains how they reclaimed as much as they could from the existing building, giving the stained glass and the mahogany floors new life. I suppose that’s largely what heritage is; a maintaining of history, of our origins, and repurposing it for a modern existence. We hope you enjoy the read, and as you light up your braais this Heritage Day, spare a thought for our collective heritage, and that umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu. This life is so much better lived when we do it together. Until next time,

Harcourts Dolphin Coast’s Dennis Scott offers his expert advice on how to prepare for the sale of your property.

VERY homeowner wants to get the maximum value when selling their home. However, some people mistakenly pay huge amounts of money and undertake complete repairs and renovations to make the house more appealing. Consider yourself lucky if you ever do recover that money from the sale of your home.

You’ll find that it’s a lot of little things, combined with only a few big ones, that make the difference between a house that is so-so and one that is irresistible. START WITH THE EXTERIOR First impressions count, and the first thing your potential buyers are going to see is the exterior. Chances are they may decide to drive right past your property if they see an untidy garden and an unpainted house. So, make sure your garden is well cared for. Mow the lawn, water the plants and place your pots with flowering plants within plain sight. Make sure the exterior of your house is spotlessly clean and that includes the driveway, front door and windows. Ensure your entrance and the surrounding area is clean. Give the gate or door a fresh coat of paint, if need be. Your buyers will have a lot of time to have a good look at the entrance and the surroundings while they wait for you to answer the doorbell. LEAD THE WAY Giving your interior walls a fresh coat of paint is the best way to increase the market value. Neutral colours give your rooms an elegant quality. Get your carpets and curtains professionally cleaned. Replacing old and worn out fixtures with brand new ones is an inexpensive investment that will most likely reap rewards. And now, those three most important words that can make or break your sale - Clear the Clutter. Now is a good time to throw away items that have never been used. Clean out and organize your cupboards. IT’S SHOWTIME, FOLKS! On D-Day, put the final touches to make your house look even more appealing. Remember, your buyers are looking for a house they can call their own. Again, first impressions count. Fill your home with the delicious aroma

of baked goods by actually baking just before your buyers arrive. Fresh flowers, strategically placed, add colour and joy to any room. Keep windows and curtains open to give the house a bright airy look. If it’s a late winter’s evening, switch on all your lights so your house looks and feels warm and cosy. Pick up strewn clothes and throw those in the laundry. Don’t throw all the picked-up stuff into your cupboards. Buyers are likely to see the interior of cupboards and wardrobes. Spray the carpets, curtains and furniture with an odour-removing spray to erase all traces of cigarette smell and pet-odour. Hang fresh, clean towels in the bathrooms and kitchen. Make sure the bathrooms are clean. Placing a few bric-a-brac in each bathroom gives it a more personal touch. De-cluttering always seems such an ominous task, and it’s only when you are about to sell your home that it really becomes important. The moment you want to sell your house, you really have to view clutter in a totally different light. Your home may be in good condition and well built, yet simple clutter will create the perception of disorder. When buyers see clutter, they assume that the home has been neglected, with more to fix than meets the eye. This perception may undermine your home’s market value. Remember that a purchase decision is an emotional and intellectual response based on what you see. Before putting your home on the market, de-cluttering is an essential part of your preparation, and is virtually cost-free. It is an activity that goes hand-in-hand with moving. So you will have to prepare yourself for throwing away, boxing to keep and maybe having a garage sale or giving to charity. Your move will be easier, and you will create an open, spacious, simplified look that buyers will love. If you need support, a local home staging service can work with your furniture and create a whole new look. When it comes to selling your home, less is truly more. The result? Sold, at a better price.

If you’ve had art collecting dust in your garage, now’s the time to get it off the floor and onto your walls. DIY and décor aficionado Allen Petrie offers practical tips on creating picture-perfect spaces.

A

RT is a very personal feature in anyone’s home. Most of us aren’t art collectors and we see art as decorative supplements to our homes rather than an investment (although it can absolutely be an investment).

Art of any kind, whether it’s a framed photograph, a print or even an original canvas takes some know-how to display correctly in order to achieve the effect you’re looking for. Some of the factors that need to be considered are aesthetic and others are practical:

* SPACE The right space can make or break an installation like a painting or a mounted photograph. Give your piece some space, unless a crowded photo wall is what you’re after. Most big paintings need a large wall space in the home to make it a feature. * LIGHTING Natural light will work for you during the day but in the evenings, when you’re most likely to have company, the correct lighting on a piece of art will help to draw attention to it. Spotlights can be set to concentrate their beams in a certain area and most good spotlights can be adjusted to spread the right amount of light. Investigate and try different hues when choosing lightbulbs. It’s incredible how

s ’ t r A ALIVE a certain colour bulb will lift a canvas and make certain colours ‘pop’. Warm, incandescent and cool LED lighting options are also worth considering. * MOOD Having the right piece in the right room, with the right mood is more important than you might think. That’s why children’s art ends up on the fridge door. The kitchen is an intimate, family space and is visited constantly. It’s where kid’s art is seen and appreciated most. Conversely, a statement piece or something with a dramatic theme might be suited to a more formal area in the home, like the living room. * FRAME Any framing company will tell you that a suitable frame is of utmost importance. Frames are also no longer generic and innovation in display frames has come a long way. Framing expert, Sarah Dickenson from Elemental Frames in Burnedale, Umhlali, is a brilliant source of knowledge and expertise. (Find her on Instagram @elemental_frames.)

d e e r g o a t t s i e r e R H The previously derelict 100-year-old manor house situated on Seaton Estate was recently unveiled as the clubhouse for this luxury equestrian residential development in Sheffield. In just three months, a team of dedicated artisans, architects, and décor specialists have performed nothing short of a miracle in refurbishing this historic landmark.

A

S you enter the newly refurbished manor house on Seaton Estate, it’s hard to imagine that just a few months ago it was virtually uninhabitable. The century-old original homestead had been largely reclaimed by nature. The wooden trusses were infested with borer beetle, the floor was punctuated by dangerous dropoffs supported by piles of bricks, and there was hardly a roof to speak of.

Today, thanks to the commitment by Catherine Oliver of Wylder Jane Designs, Brent Buchanan of Nsika Architects, and the tireless efforts of the contracting team at Slingshot Investments in the restoration process, the manor house has been transformed into the first tangible emblem of what the Seaton Estate will become. Catherine Oliver, who has a longstanding relationship with developers the Collins Group, was entrusted with the interiors. “I’m very lucky,” she explains, “as we have a wonderful, trusting relationship. They let me run with it, as they now know I spend money wisely.” Part of Catherine’s vision, which echoed that of Brent Buchanan and Slingshot

Investment’s, was to salvage and restore as much as they could from the existing site. “This was a labour of love,” adds Catherine, who credits Slingshot with much of the restoration, notably the stained glass which had to be painstakingly removed, re-leaded, and put back into the building, as was the mahogany flooring. The project began, unbelievably, in May this year, with the teams working seven days a week, sometimes until late in the evening. “All the staff were incredible,” adds Catherine, suggesting that the synergy between everyone involved helped to ease them through the tight deadline. Architecturally, the property is steeped in old-world charm. The brief was to keep things traditional, to respect what was already there, and to introduce timeless sophistication into an equestrian setting, since Seaton’s unique selling point is its world-class equine facilities. “Nature doesn’t date,” says Catherine, who integrated classic, old-world patterns and textures in the wallpaper, and utilised natural materials like the

ubiquitous mahogany, leather (notably the Chesterfield couches) and echoes of the natural world in green velvets. She scoured Durban’s antique stores for classic second-hand pieces that would add warmth, like a solid oak housekeeper’s cabinet. She made regular purchases from the Hillcrest SPCA’s equine unit, who had a collection of paraphernalia, including outdated riding crops, centuries-old brass bits and unused, handmade leather bridles. “They would see me coming every Saturday!” she laughs, but her persistence paid off. In just three months, she had amassed unique accent pieces that now give Seaton an unmistakable air. For the art, Catherine leaned toward mid-18th Century prints, which she chose from an online resource that create quality replicas. The lighting was key to setting

the tone for the property, since the manor house will also soon unveil a restaurant, billiard room and whiskey lounge. Catherine selected chandeliers from Weylandts, one of which utilises spectacle lenses, yet another motif from a bygone era. The décor, paired with the efforts of everyone else involved, has allowed the old Manor House to almost tell its own story, comments Catherine. Seaton Estate is part of a multi-billion rand property development, incorporating surrounding Zululami Coastal Estate. BESPOKE BEADWORK Lunga Ntuli was never destined to be a beach car guard in Ballito. His refusal to settle is nothing short of inspirational. Now, he’s the author of five self-published books on love and relationships, will soon appear on CNN, and has just returned from Africa Fashion Week in London where he showcased his wrist watches. He sat down with Life & Style, on his birthday, to share his story.

I

’VE always been a big dreamer,” says Lunga Ntuli. “You know those SAB TV adverts with Vuyo, the big dreamer?” he asks rhetorically. “That’s me!”

Lunga’s first love was certainly not fashion, never mind watches. It was cricket. There was never a doubt in his mind that he would one day play professionally, but when he could not continue his school scholarship into his tertiary studies, he had to face the reality that his childhood dream may not materialise. He applied all over, from WITS to Walter Sisulu University, but was turned

Lunga then became a car guard out of necessity, patrolling the beaches of Ballito and Salt Rock. It then occurred to him to start a girls cricket team locally, at Sizani School, and RA Padayachee, the two schools he had attended as a youngster. “Within a year, we made the league,” he states, “with six girls making the district team, and two making provincial sides.” In the meantime, Lunga had been saving the money he was making guarding cars, and he applied to the Durban University of Technology to study sports management. He attained

his three-year diploma, and throughout his studies he freelanced as a writer for local media. “I saw a gap in covering women’s sports,” he explains. “I wanted to write about something that no one else was covering, so I started doing profiles on women.” While still a student, he was awarded the prestigious G Sport Award, journalist Cas Naidoo’s Photo credit Simon Deiner acknowledgement / SDR Photo / @SDRphoof men who to contribute to the promotion of women in sport. He interned with the municipality as a sports facilitator, before writing his first book, Love versus Sport, in 2011. These ‘love letters’ the sale of his book are the deeply symbolic beaded tokens Why Men Cheat and historically exchanged by lovers. Lunga utilised the concept of ucu, referring to the instances where the ‘rules’ of the practice are deliberately broken for design purposes, allowing him to freestyle with the tradition. The motif of ‘time’ seemed a fitting addition to the concept, and his idea of LN Watches was

born. “The Zulu love letters are gifts of undying love, and in the old days they had so much impact,” explains Lunga. “Men working on the mines would utilise these symbols of love,” he adds, “and now, for me, they’ve become a symbol of friendship and ubuntu too.” Lunga utilised his existing social media channels to sell the timepieces, and they were an instant success. He’s already making up to 100 units per month, and he’s employed three women as permanent staff. When the orders stream in he has up to 10 women working around the clock to ensure his four-to-five day turnaround time. The watches are unisex, and can be customised, although the existing models offer the traditional combinations of colours and designs which speak to the origins of the craft. High off his London trip, coupled with his birthday, and his time spent with the CNN crew, Lunga seems unstoppable, much like Vuyo. Go to lnwatches.co.za to register your order.

DESIGN

AFRICA RISING

Bustling Nairobi is a far cry from sleepy Ballito (yes, we are still considered sleepy!). Especially for Charlene Wanjohi; wife, mother, fashion designer and entrepreneur. She’s creating head-turning accessories, clothing and footwear as an ecclectic ode to Africa.

A

FRIEND of both Catherine Wanjohi and her Dutch husband recommended they take a family break from the hustle of Nairobi, and holiday in Ballito. Having never been before, the couple and their three children instantly fell in love with our little coastal town.

Her husband’s consultancy meant he could work from anywhere in the world, and Catherine laughs, almost with disbelief, as she explains how they quite literally returned home, packed their bags and headed straight back to Ballito. “We had no plan!” she adds. Although she’s a qualified teacher, Catherine has spent much of her time raising their three children aged five, seven, and nine years old. She loves education, but has always felt a pull toward fashion, having spent her childhood in Kenya following the fashions on television, utilising leftover scraps of fabric and reimagining them into outfits. She’s always felt that many of the popular retail stores have never reflected her personal style, and even once she moved to South Africa, struggled to shop for clothing and accessories that said something about her heritage. A year after settling in Ballito, in December of 2016, Catherine began Zinge Afrika. “Zinge Afrika is a premium brand of handcrafted clothing and accessories inspired by various African tribes, textiles and cultural elements from many parts of our great continent,” explains Catherine. The name zinge came from Catherine’s housekeeper. She was looking for a word that meant ‘all encompassing’, referring to her intention of gathering African influences together. Her

If you’re a nervous swimmer, fear not! Their snorkel trips all take place in enclosed reefs, meaning there is zero chance of being washed out to sea or having to battle the currents – you are fully protected from the open ocean. If you can swim, you can snorkel. If you have small children, the same applies, although children under 15 are not recommended for the Night Snorkel Safari and children 12 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult on all Tidal Tao activities. Tidal Tao also offer Marine Biology Trips for school groups, and even corporate companies can take advantage of these learning experiences. Tidal Tao has accredited guides and they offer a wealth of knowledge on even the tiniest of creatures.

Zulu-speaking housekeeper suggested zinge, and Catherine’s business was born. Much like the concept behind her fashion, her children too embody multiculturalism, speaking Swahili, Dutch, English, Afrikaans, and Zulu. “Concept, craft, function and humanity intersect in our brand, which has interest in intercultural relationships, and it’s based on Africa’s rich aesthetic heritage, using design, quality and sustainability as tools,” explains Catherine. “Our clothing and accessories are beautifully crafted and customized to showcase personal style. Most importantly, our products are ecofriendly; 65 percent of the work is done by hand and our raw materials include sisal, bone, leather, feathers, beads, old magazines, wood, cotton and jute (fabric) all sourced locally,” she adds. To further her business, which began purely on social media, Catherine joined Enterprise Illembe’s entrepreneurship programme, and completed the three-month intensive business training and mentorship, which she feels has helped her cement the brand. This year, she opened her studio doors at 9 Marion Road, Ballito, offering retail space displaying her clothing, jewellery, footwear, handbags, and other accessories, as well as an alteration service. In fact, the alteration service is a part of Catherine’s sustainability drive, and she feels strongly about repurposing items rather than discarding them – an echo of her childhood spent reimagining old fabrics and accessories, and creating something beautiful. OW that you’ve started trail running and have all the gear, it’s time to start thinking about entering a race. Of course you don’t have to, but I recommend you do for the following reasons:

1) Entering a race gives you a goal to train towards and keeps you motivated. 2) Entering a race, especially if it’s your first race or a race that’s a longer distance than you are used to running, forces you out of your comfort zone, which is essential for personal growth. 3) Races happen all over, so entering a race in a different part of the country (or even a different country) is a wonderful way to explore and discover new places. 4) Running a race allows you to interact with the greater trail running community, meet interesting people and make new friends. Here are my top five trail races in SA: 1. Three Cranes Challenge: 21-23 Feb 2020 I try to do this one every year because it is relatively close by and has all the elements of a good stage trail run. KZN trail running

HIT THE TRAIL

If you’ve been following our trail-running series with Rosie Carey, you should be feeling suitably motivated to get your shoes on and get out there. Here are her top picks for the best destination trail-runs. has changed the challenge to make it more accessible and can now be run as a two-day, with shorter distances to choose from. The run takes you through the Karkloof Mountains with sections of lovely flowing single-track through indigenous forest. There is also a zipline experience thrown into the race, as well as a high tea. It’s a good choice as your first stage race. 2. Dumbe Trail Run: 1-3 Nov This is a two-day event that takes place on the escarpment near Oliviershoek pass and Sterkfontein Dam. I love this run because it’s not too commercialized and has fantastic single track. Although the distances are short (36km total) there is a fair amount of climbing and

some technical sections, so you do need to train. The views from the escarpment are breathtaking. This is sold as a family event because they have childcare available for the duration of the run. 3. Lesotho Ultra: 23 Nov The Ultra is a bit further away but it is so worth driving to! There are two distances to choose from; 38km and 50km. The race is run from Maliba Lodge and through the Maluti Mountain Range and offers spectacular single track for most of the race. The run is wild and rugged and honest. Obviously, the altitude makes this race tough for us coastal dwellers, so you do need to train. It’s a tough run and it takes a bit of logistical planning to get there, but it is well worth it.

MODERN FRONTIERS

4. Golden Gate Challenge: 18-20 Oct This year a new format has been introduced to make it more accessible to novices. It is a three-day stage race but the distances each day are variable depending on what you want to do. It takes place (obviously) in the Golden Gate National Park and although the distances are short, the run takes place at altitude and there are some fairly technical sections. A fantastic aspect to this race is the 4am start on the 3rd day which takes you up the mountain-side (on jeep track) in the dark allowing you to witness sunrise from the top of the mountain (with bacon and egg rolls!). 5. Ultra-Trail Cape Town: 28 Nov - 1 Dec I know this involves travelling to Cape Town (sigh), but it’s so worthwhile. There are a range of distances to choose from; 100km, 65km, 35km and 21km, making this race perfect for all levels. Because it’s an international race, the vibe is very festive and you get to rub shoulders with trail running celebrities. There is something special about running on the iconic Table Mountain and it’s something every South African trail runner needs to experience. The race is well organized with great aid stations. If you want to get a little holiday in with your run, this is the perfect race to enter. Visit kzntrailrunning.co.za, rockhoppingtrail.run and runtrail. co.za. Trail magazine also often has reviews of interesting races and a race calendar. Go to trailmag.co.za

Kwadukuza’s beach manager and intrepid explorer, ‘Seaweed’ Steve Honneysett headed to a family gathering in Clarens via the Sani Pass, with all of its new adjustments but ,with no less majesty. He braved the icy wind and stepped out of the car (albeit briefly) to share the view with us at 2 873 metres.

W

hen visiting a place of historical

significance I tend to drift back in time and try to imagine what it might have been like for the pioneers attempting to conquer the landscape especially those who opened up routes through mountainous areas.

Last month I visited Clarens for a family get together. It’s a great place for those from Gauteng and us ‘coasties’ to meet halfway for some quality time together. My brother and I are always first to put up our hands for an adventure along the way, but this time we left it up to our better halves to sort out the itinerary for the road trip. Expecting breakfast stops at quaint coffee shops or lunch at a whimsical restaurant, we were bowled over when they suggested a trip up Sani Pass and a drive through Lesotho.

Starting early at 6am on the Thursday before the long weekend, we hit the road and drove off the grid to Himeville on some lovely farm roads until we arrived at the Sani Pass turn off. You all probably know of the recent redevelopment of the Pass, and it is truly coming along since my last trip up there two years back. They have got closer to the police post with the tar road, and even closer with work on bridges over streams and construction on holding up the steep rock faces on the road sides. Not much else has changed except that the road going up the pass has been widened somewhat to allow for two vehicles to pass in opposite directions. The condition of the road from the police post to the border gate at the top is still a challenge, even for 4x4 vehicles. To make matters worse, we had howling wind to contend with, so we proceeded with caution and as it was really cold we (very briefly) stepped out of the vehicle for sight-seeing.

OPEN MONDAY - SUNDAY 12 NOON TILL LATE

The ride up really is breathtaking, with some amazing views back down the pass. That brings me back to my opening thoughts about what it might have been like for the first attempt up and how many days it might have taken them compared with the trip today. At the Lodge at the top of the pass, there is much documented history on the traders who traversed it, and the first attempts to conquer the pass with vehicles of all shapes and sizes. The view from the deck of the lodge is remarkable but with the freezing wind blasting us, we settled in the lounge where we commandeered the fire place and enjoyed a hot cup of tea. Ascending the pass on what is left of the old road is reminiscent of the old days, but when you reach the border

post at the top, you are now greeted by a recently constructed modern highway which takes you through the heart of the Lesotho highlands, all the way to the other end and out into the Freestate and Clarens. The pass has its seasons, and we happened to pass through a wintery one with frozen waterfalls and streams and dry landscapes for as far as one can see. The Sani Pass is one of the wonders of South Africa and well worth a visit. Seaweed Steve presents the Daily Surf & Weather Report on 88FM Ballito.

A highlight on the artistic front was the Jane Digby art exhibition at Simbithi. The whole of the North Coast packed in to the Simbithi Club on the opening night to view the most incredible selection of art work by this world-class artist. The other was entitled If Not Now… When, which was also about celebrating life. There were also paintings by Dee Donaldson, Sue Whitmore, Carol Hayward Fell, and sculptures from Bonginkosi Mabhena.

EARLY MORNING THEATRE of the ABSURD Catch Dave Charles live on 88FM, weekdays from 6am.

O

ver the years I have heard from early morning enthusiasts that dawn is the best part of the day. I don’t like it. It’s way too early for me.

In my youth when I was compelled to rise at an ungodly hour to “run the bounds” at boarding school I rebelled at the practice – definitely the start of my distaste for authority. The post school military adventure that we were forced to endure further confirmed my determination to resist this tyranny. Of course there were those who enjoyed these things, just like there are those who have penchant for the whip or the tattoo needle, a predilection derived no doubt from early experience. The Marquis de Sade made a career out of it. No, I have generally preferred the afterglow of the sunset and the romance

of the evening. As a younger man I worked as a professional musician playing the entertainment circuit across the country. This made me a creature of the night. It was a strict regimen of four sets from 8 pm to midnight. It wasn’t easy to wind down quickly after the gig so sleep would often only be embraced in the early hours. This played havoc with my studies at university and I am still not entirely convinced that the honours degree on my wall is the real thing (but, against all odds, I was apparently, a good student). Despite having lived the latter part of my life largely oblivious to the early morning proclivities of the running, walking, cycling and gym set, I now find myself amongst them ironically facing the coming dawn with as much distaste as one of those red soldiers behind the barricade at Rorke’s Drift. My son and heir, Mike, of Mike in the Morning on 88FM fame, is away on honeymoon and I have been persuaded

to step in for him until his return. This is why I am now ungraciously up n’ at ‘em in the pitch dark pre-dawn, stumbling through the gloom trying to get organised without disturbing my beloved and the dogs who generally do a pretty good job of pretending not to hear me. I am at the radio studio at the Lifestyle Centre just after 05h15 weekdays, desperately attempting to cobble together some semblance of lucidity with which to present the first news bulletin of the morning. The coffee helps but it takes a few cups before the fog lifts sufficiently for me to make sense of the words on the screen. The 6am report is always touch and go when it comes to the pronunciation of those names - Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Albert Zeufack, President Abd-Rabbu …seriously…Mansour Hadi, interior minister Giorgi Gakharia…oh dear Lord give me strength… Captain Philani Nkwalase, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotaki, Foreign Minister

Mohammad Javad Zarif…you have got to be kidding…Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Khalid al-Falih…there are going to be casualties. They’re all in the news this week – oh joy! If you are awake at 6, tune in to 88FM if you dare. It gets better as the morning progresses but that first hurrah is generally like early morning Theatre of the Absurd. Who knows, you could become a fan.

OR the past 10 years, Mystic Cars has been a landmark on the corner of Douglas Crowe and Phezulu Drive in Ballito.

Mystic Cars owner Fanie van Rensburg and his team started with just one humble ‘hut’ on the premises, slowly expanding as necessary. The business grew organically, based on authentic relationship building with their customer, going the extra mile, and making sure each transaction went beyond expectation. Their workshop, Pit Stop in Umhlali, offers vehicle servicing, with two qualified master technicians and diagnostic facilities for all makes of vehicle from Porsche to Volkswagen. At any given time, there are up to 60 cars on their floor, ensuring an excellent range of choices.
