BALLITO TO UMHLANGA

A woman’s worth

H

ELEN Garner said something quite poignant to me during our interview for this issue of Life & Style; she told me she is selfish with her time. Now, to some, her comment may seem insignificant, but I’m pretty sure that to most women (working or not, mothers or not), it will strike a chord.

I was quite enamoured by Helen. She is well known in this part of the world, and I was impressed with her commitment to herself. She is constantly studying, learning, growing, challenging both her body and mind, and she does this all while juggling two busy kids, teaching, hosting retreats, and being an Instagram influencer with over 27 000 followers. 02 August: Go clubbing You see, it’s not that women The annual RE/MAX Dolphin Realtors are genetically programmed into Charity Golf Day will help raise funds for placing themselves last in line when it comes to self-care. by (surprise!) mom, with some convenience offering to spice up your rice. It’s so condescending, and advertisers and other media are slowly waking up to the fact that women do not ‘belong’ in the kitchen. They belong wherever they damn well choose. Think of one woman in your life who relishes the thought of dishes, dinner and domesticity, and I’ll bet you can name another five who do not. It’s become a default switch, and it’s nonsense. It’s not a ‘natural’ state of affairs for women to be the self-sacrificing angels. Australian journalist Annabel Crabb’s book, The Wife Drought, investigates the complexities around the work/life balance for women. In it she says, “The

obligation for working mothers is a very precise one: the feeling that one ought to work as if one did not have children, while raising one’s children as if one did not have a job.” It’s such a succinct (and jarring) summary of this expectation placed on women. The result of this ludicrous standard is that women tend toward overachieving in the workplace to prove a point: “I am just as worthy as my male counterparts,” or “having children doesn’t make me distracted, or weak.” But it’s changing. I am surrounded by friends and colleagues who are bucking this age-old trend that’s so prevalent in heterosexual relationships, and partners are increasingly stepping up to the plate; taking on more parenting responsibilities, supporting their partners more when it comes to domestic duties, and alleviating some of the burden of the domestic space that has rested solely on the shoulders of women. The rise of empathetic bosses and places of work is on the rise too, because the working world is only now cottoning on to the fact that supported workforces are happy and productive workforces. Shifting perceptions on things like flexi time, on-site day-cares, paternity leave etc. are on the rise. It takes a village people, not one woman! This Women’s Day, (and every day thereafter), I want to encourage women to be more selfish. Be like Helen! Prioritise your hobbies, like Pippa McGregor on page 11, the Holla Trails brand ambassador who makes the time and space to do what she loves. Celebrate your strengths, the things that feel good and bring you happiness. Don’t hide them or feel guilty for it. You do not have to work yourself to death raising children, working yourself to the bone to prove a point, or showing everyone how selfless you are. As we commemorate the march of 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in 1956, protesting the imposition of the Apartheid era pass laws on to black women, let’s remember a moment in time when women stood together to fight an injustice. Let’s not forget what we are capable of. Until next time,

Everyone attending the event must donate one pad at R23.50, or a pack at R200 which will go to the Sizani School in Salt Rock. The schedule includes yoga with Helen, a chat with physiotherapist Candice Langford, Pilates with Kaylee Kinetics, an essential oil workshop with Penny Slein plus other speakers, an opportunity to shop and refreshments. Visit the Sage Facebook page @sagecentre.saltrock for more information.

Helen Garner Weaver is a familiar presence on the North Coast. She’s an accomplished champion freediver, mom of two children and four dogs, eternal student, serious yogi, and Instagram influencer with over 27 000 followers. She shared some of her story with us.

W

HEN we meet with Helen Garner Weaver, she’s in the throes of mid-week homework chaos with her two children, Freyja and Stieg (her husband Ant, a pilot and forester, has Norwegian roots). So we first meet Helen the mother; frenetic yet patient, stern yet loving. It’s the eternal push and pull of motherhood in action.

In Ashtanga yoga, Helen’s preferred practice, there are six series, or levels, through which practitioners advance, with only a handful of people in the world adept in the fourth series. “This is the seventh series of Ashtanga in action, isn’t it!” Helen declares, referring to her daily family life, the real toil and trials of educating and protecting children, grappling with daily stressors and overcoming the

obstacles that life throws at us. Now, we’re meeting Helen the yogi. Her first trip to an ashram was in Mumbai, in 2004, where she attained her teacher training qualification, gained in the sparsest of surroundings. “You get a bucket of water,” she explains, “and that’s it – it’s hours and hours of daily study and practice.” Helen the yogi is evidently disciplined and is a seeker of knowledge. Her teaching led her to Cape Town’s first hot yoga studio, before she discovered (at age 33) one of the other great loves of her life, freediving in The Big Blue. Already a competitive swimmer, Helen took the next step and moved to Egypt, a Mecca for freediving, and during her two years in Sinai she broke six South African Deep Diving records in 18 months, before returning home to open the first hot yoga studio in Ballito. “Ant and I joke that he spends his time high up in the clouds and I spend mine under water!” she laughs. The combination of yoga and diving seemed a natural fit for Helen, as both involve the complete control of the breath, and both aim to attain Samadhi, the complex concept of meditative consciousness. “I miss it big time,” she replies when asked if she still dives. “It’s not deep enough here. I can’t even get to 30 metres, and if I wanted to dive I’d have to hire a boat, schedule the trips out to deeper waters… it’s not conducive,” she explains of our local coastlines. It’s one of the reasons she lived in Egypt, where she could reach the depths required to both train and break world records. While she yearns for her diving days, she’s certainly not resting on her laurels. She’s learning Sanskrit, and is currently gearing up to head off to India again in March next year, where

she’ll tackle her third series Ashtanga training with a 65-year-old teacher she tracked down on the Internet. “There are only a handful of people in the world who can claim to know fourth series,” she explains, so her task was not an easy one. “I’ve become selfish with my time,” she adds, and I feel I’m now at the top of my game,” a feeling that can only be borne out of experience, and considered reflection.

Sizzling Hot...

The homework chaos ensues as we part ways, but our sense is that Helen takes it all in her stride, while some part of her mind is unconsciously always seeking Samadhi.

AND YOUR LIFE IS A STORY LIKE THE WIND

Dave Charles presents the Afternoon Drive weekdays from 3pm, powered by Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Ballito on 88FM

M

Y world was a very different place in the seventies. I had survived an initial year of service in the army and had escaped to the relative sanctuary of Wits University where I had enrolled in a course of study that was on the road to nowhere. History, English, Political Science, Zulu and Biblical Studies – what on earth was I thinking? With subjects like these I was pretty much guaranteed to become a person of interest to the shadow men that lurked on the fringes of the campus.

People disappeared in those days – sometimes they returned, haunted and damaged from their experiences behind the closed doors at John Vorster Square, but some never did. These were dangerous times, but there was an intoxicating spirit of rebellion fomented in the illuminating music of the time to which I was drawn like a moth. There were concerts in the Great Hall featuring performances by the leading protest poets and musicians of the time – Paul Clingman, John Oakley-Smith,Colin Shapiro, Edi Nederlander, Colin Shamley, Mike Dickson and an unusual duo called Jonathan and Sipho. Although the latter were the least provocative in terms of lyrics and posturing, the fact that they were legally racially segregated and therefore not allowed to perform together in most venues outside the campus made a powerful statement. Their music moved me deeply. It gave me hope for a better future and a desire to make a difference. It made me proud to be South African. I was a working musician, paying for my studies by performing wherever my agent, Maurice Fresco from the Don Hughes Organisation booked me. I played all the standards of the time and the pub songs too, a far cry from the politically charged repertoire on the stages at Wits.

But the money was good and the perks were even better – money for nothing and the chicks for free… I felt so sorry for Johnny and Sipho that I offered them a guest slot at the steakhouse I was playing at in Braamfontein. They gracefully declined. Jonathan and Sipho eventually formed the band, Juluka, an international music phenomenon was born, and the rest, as they say, is history. Johnny and I stayed in touch and over the years we had

and far away now. On top of the television career, I was working weekends as a deejay on Radio 5 and as we were left alone in the studio in those days, we had a certain amount of freedom to play what was called “personal choice” in the programming. Although nothing was officially banned, there were tight guidelines and powerful warnings in place. All politically sensitive material was heavily restricted – if you played it, you were gone. I played it – Asimbonanga – Johnny’s ode to the then still imprisoned Nelson Mandela. I played it as often as possible before management was alerted to the breach. It caused chaos at the SABC and I was immediately suspended but I was allowed back after ten days on air because my show was so popular. This happened a few times until I eventually ran out of options. Later, while my beloved Sue and I were sitting anonymously in the darkness at a Savuka concert in Standard Bank Arena, Johnny made a point of acknowledging that saga by dedicating their performance of that song to us. In later years we had the occasional get together and after a concert in Durban, before news of his cancer diagnosis was confirmed, we had lunch with his manager, Roddy Quinn and he wasn’t looking well. I suggested that he take it a little easier and he laughed. He had so much still to do! Our final breakfast together was at Zara’s Café at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito. We had a wonderful time discussing family, the future and the past and how quickly time passes. Then we said goodbye and shook hands, knowing that this would be our last time together. But the music continues to play. Go well, my friend – I’ll see you again on the other side. C

Originally called Prime Time, and later Sundowner, this show had a regular viewership in the millions and when Johnny Clegg released the music video for Cruel Crazy Beautiful World, a song written for his first born son, Jesse, we got to debut it on the show. ASHTON turns

A

ND in the wink of an eye – Ashton International College goes into celebration mode with their tenth anniversary. Mr Andre Buys, CEO, purchased Seaforth College in September 2009, and quietly took over semi-officially during the final term of 2009. Ashton International College opened its doors to 459 students in January 2010 – the year South Africa also hosted the World Cup.

Immediately, the work in transforming the Ashton campus and upgrading facilities began, and Ashton was one of the schools identified to develop a full-size soccer field with lights as a training venue for the 2010 World Cup. Another unique addition was the introduction of the Cambridge International Examinations Curriculum, making Ashton one of the only schools to run the two curricula side-by-side. Over the past ten years, the College has grown in leaps and bounds, and boasts just over 1 400 students from Grade 00 through to matric. We have attained 100-percent Matric pass rates on both the curricula with students performing in the top one percent nationally in almost every subject over the past ten years on the IEB Curriculum and the Cambridge students, not

to be outdone, have achieved highest positions in subjects in IGCSE and AS and A Levels in the sub-Saharan Africa sector of Cambridge. We look forward to the upcoming celebrations where many of our Alumni will be returning, and we will acknowledge their many achievements in their journeys after Ashton. The celebrations will start with sport on the new Sports Campus, running into the evening, with a fantastic range of sports fixtures on Saturday, a celebratory dinner on Saturday evening for all past and present students and parents in the Grace Hall. The weekend will end with a Church Service at 09h00 in the Grace Hall.

THE WEATHER WITH YOU

Ballito residents live and die by the weather. Rain coming? We pack away our flip flops and go to ground! We asked tech expert Marc Forrest to share his best apps to second guess the weather gods.

W the country.

E really do live in paradise. The North Coast not only offers some of the best lifestyle living anywhere in South Africa, but also what surely must be the best weather in

Where else (in the world) do you only have two days of winter a year? Two days may sound like a bit of an exaggeration, but we’re really not that far off. As someone who spends the majority of my time up country, I can promise you our “winters” are nothing compared to the sub-zero temps experienced in Gauteng. Weather prediction is not an exact science, and there literally thousands of weather apps available to choose from, so it was quite an exercise to narrow it down. One of my favourite apps has to be the Windy.com app. It shows a visual representation of current and forecasted weather using amazing imagery. The app allows you select everything from wind, temperature, rain and even wave size which is then represented on a map using different colours to show variances. You can also zoom in on some of the nearby webcams in the area to give you a live view of the weather conditions. Windy.com also has a fantastic website and you can setup alerts for specific areas to notify you when conditions are forecasted to change. More info at windy.com

Another must-have app on your device is the Weatherplaza app. The app provides up to 14 days for over a million locations around the wold. The key to the app is the lightning and rain alarms that notify you instantly when a storm is on the way (even though we seldom have “storms” here in paradise). The lightning alarm is really accurate and also shows a map of lightning storms in a specific radius. More info weatherplaza.com Living alongside one of the most scenic stretches of beach in the country, keeping up with the tides is a must when deciding to go for that next surf or swim. And the WindGuru site and app is the perfect place to keep tabs on that. WindGuru is synonymous with surfers around the world and is by far one of the most accurate sources of info for all sea & surf related info. The site offers loads of different measurements including wave size, wave period

and wave and wind direction; really helpful if you are heading down to the beach. They don’t have a dedicated app which you can download from the app store, but the mobile version of the site works just as well. More info at windguru.cz As I mentioned earlier, there are literally thousands of different choices. Most of them offer pretty similar services, but for me, it’s the quality of the information that the application or site provides. GIVE YOUR METABOLISM A REV

Why is it that one person can eat like a growing teenage boy and stay slim, while another can look a cupcake in the eye and put on weight? Dietician Kim Wilson explains why, and how, you can change your metabolism (yes, you can!)

I

T comes down to three things: our individual genetic differences in our metabolism, exercise patterns and muscle mass. Our metabolism is the system in our bodies responsible for converting everything we eat into energy. A ‘fast’ metabolism is like an oven running on high at all times, burning through calories quickly. A ‘slow’ metabolism is one that runs cooler and requires fewer calories to keep going.

While it’s easy to blame our weight on our genetic makeup, this only accounts for around 10 percent of the problem. Our environment influences the other 90 percent. This means that you can manage and support your metabolism.

OUR METABOLISM CAN CHANGE

metabolism persisting over five weeks despite increasing calorie intake. If you want to lose weight with a mild calorie deficit, make sure you don’t restrict too much for too long. 2. EAT ENOUGH PROTEIN

Remember the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) mentioned earlier? In addition to protein helping you feel full, it also has quite a high TEF. This means it can significantly increase the rate at which your body will burn calories. The TEF for protein is much higher than that for fat or carbohydrates. When it comes to cutting your calories for weight loss, studies have shown that if you maintain sufficient protein intake throughout the calorie deficit, the decrease in metabolism is minimized. If you want to support your metabolism when you’re losing weight, make sure you eat enough protein.

hours per night, for hours nights in a row experience a decrease in their metabolism by around two-point-six percent on average. Unlike the effects of calorie deficits however, your metabolism can return back to normal if you begin getting enough sleep again. If you think taking a nap in the day might help, unfortunately if you are in a sleep deficit, this may further disrupt your natural sleep cycle (circadian rhythm). We need to get seven to nine hours

of sleep on average each night (not during the day) to preserve metabolic rate.

A Zululand family farm that once earned its bread and butter from forestry turned its eye to Tea Tree, and has been transformed into one of the country’s most successful organic essential oil manufacturers, from plant to final product.

ODERN science has shown us that essential oils are extremely complex chemically, and their benefits are vast, from mood enhancers to gastro-intestinal support and antifungal properties; but our ancestors already knew that.

The use of medicinal herbs and essential oils is thousands of years old. The ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, over 5 000 years ago, had machines for extracting oils from plants. Essential oils have been found in 3 000-year-old tombs in the Egyptian Pyramids, and early Greek physicians, including Hippocrates, mentioned aromatic plant essences and oil massages for their healing and mood-enhancing qualities. Ayurvedic medicine, the world’s oldest healing system, has long recommended essential oil massage as a health treatment for many conditions. It takes tonnes of plants and complex procedures to produce just a few drops

of these prized elixirs, and not far from Ballito, a family business is doing just that. SOiL Organic Essential Oils have been lining the shelves of Clicks, DisChem and other major retail outlets across the country for many years. SOiL was started by Stuart McMurray, a fifth-generation Zululand farmer, who trialled a few small tea tree plantations. He was looking for a retirement crop that was easy to farm, couldn’t be infested with insects, that the neighbouring cows would not eat, and did not require huge amounts of irrigation. His experiment worked. Today, the company is run by Stuart’s son Grant and his fellow director wife Natalie, both chartered accountants living in Mtunzini. In addition to the original farm in Mtonjaneni, north of Melmoth, they’ve acquired other farms mostly between Gingindlovu and Mtunzini, all of which are now covered with fragrant rosemary fields, lemongrass bushes, eucalyptus

and tea tree plantations, pungent Rose geranium, and niaouli trees (a relative of tea tree); all farmed without the use of chemicals or pesticides. SOiL was the first company in South Africa to sell a complete range of 100-percent certified organic essential oils. They also launched South Africa’s first line of certified organic massage oil blends and body care products. They don’t test on animals, contain no petrochemicals, parabens, synthetic fragrances or colorants, and are packaged in recyclable biodegradable glass. The family business prides itself on, not only it’s ECO-Cert rating (the Frenchbased international organic standard), but its fair-trade practices are also world class. Since the KZN climate doesn’t suit all plants used for their essential oils, some ingredients are sourced elsewhere, but Grant and Natalie maintain strong social and ethical rules by closely managing the entire supply chain. SOiL also has a range of shea butters,

WEIGHT LOSS STRATEGIES

Winter is a season conducive to weight gain: think nice warm hot chocolates, lazy days on the couch, and sleeping late. Add the effect of seasonal hormonal changes (your body wants to store extra fat) and chances are high that you’ve gained extra kilograms, but fear not! Dr Rosie Carey has some safe weight-loss strategies to get your body back on track.

Make sure everything that you put into your mouth is having a positive impact on your health. 3. Drink enough water You know this, but it bears saying again. Dehydration can be interpreted as hunger so make sure you drink enough water. Being hydrated is also essential for optimising your metabolism. Ensure that the quality of the water you’re drinking is good. Don’t replace water with sugar-free soft drinks. They are loaded with unhealthy chemicals. Getting to know… Your hair is in safe hands with the team at Gerald Wells thanks to their meticulous selection of expert stylists. This month, we chat to Andrea Durham, who trained under the likes of Gerald Wells and Terry Scott and has a penchant for colour (we’re talking to you, blondes!)

A

NDREA Kim Durham, originally from Pietermaritzburg, has been in the hair industry for 10 years.

“I’ve worked for Gerald Wells as a company previously for about three years,” explains Andrea, “having worked in all of their salons, including Gateway, Umdloti, Hillcrest and now recently relocating back to Ballito. I’ve fallen in love with Ballito and our Ballito store!” she adds. “I knew straight away this is where I would like to settle, as the Gerald Wells team have become like family.” Andrea has quite a history with the brand, having trained in Durban under then partner Terry Scott as well as Gerald Wells himself; and with such an excellent foundation, her skills set has only grown from strength to strength. “I specialize in colour and cutting,” explains Andrea. “I mostly enjoy balayages and colour corrections, as well as my blondes! I love a good challenge and putting my knowledge of colour to the test,” she adds. Andrea loves keeping up to date with all the latest trends and staying on top of her game with additional training and boosting her knowledge.

“My greatest reward is knowing that I’ve made a difference in how my clients feel about themselves both physically and mentally,” she comments. Andrea takes great pride in giving each of her clients the best quality service and care; it’s evident she loves her job and is extremely passionate about hair and making people feel good.

WOMANDLA! Nations with strong women's rights are more likely to have better health and faster economic growth than those who don't promote and protect these values, finds research published in the online journal BMJ Open (previously British Medical Journal). The trend is evident even in resource-poor countries, say the researchers. They wanted to find a link between protection of women's rights, and health improvement and sustainable development, and if ultimately, women's rights might have more of an impact than economic and social, or civil and political rights alone. They analysed databases which held information on health, human rights, and economic and social rights for 162 countries for the period 2004 to 2010. Like we needed further evidence that women were the foundation of a prosperous society, right?

The Health & Beauty Beat Beauty, aesthetic and wellness news you need to know from around the world and here at home. PEACEFUL SLEEP On page 7, you can read all about how important sleep is as a metabolic regulator to keep us at a healthy weight. If you’re battling to sleep at night (and you’ve tried counting sheep until the, ahem, cows come home!), it might be time to consider taking a supplement. Duo Calm, R445, has four simple ingredients; Chamomile, Valerian Root (sometimes called ‘Nature’s Valium’ without the hangover), Magnesium Glycinate, and Vitamin B6, vital for the brain and a powerful antioxidant that helps the body to heal and relax. Available online or from selected stockists listed at fusionlabsonline.com

FACING THE FUTURE According to the American Chemical Society, researchers have developed a 'molecular surgery' process using tiny needles, electric current and 3D moulds to quickly reshape living tissue with no incisions, scarring or recovery time. It shows promise as a noninvasive alternative to laser eye surgery (it’s shown to be effective on corneas), and could also be useful for cosmetic surgery procedures. The method also could help fix problems, such as a deviated septum, or conditions for which no good treatments exist, such as joint contractures caused by stroke or cerebral palsy.

TIME FOR YOUR TURMERIC A Washington State University research team has developed a drug delivery system using curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, that successfully inhibits bone cancer cells while promoting growth of healthy bone cells. The work could lead to better postoperative treatments for people with osteosarcoma, the second most prevalent cause of cancer death in children. Young patients with bone cancer are often treated with high doses of chemotherapy before and after surgery, many of which have harmful side effects. Researchers would like to develop gentler treatment options, especially after surgery when patients are trying to recover from bone damage at the same time that they are taking harsh drugs to suppress tumour growth. Turmeric has been used in cooking and as medicine for centuries, and its active ingredient, curcumin, has been shown to have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and bone-building capabilities. It has also been shown to prevent various forms of cancers.

CRAZY ABOUT COLLAGEN A few months ago, we ran a story about the benefits of including bone broth in our diets, one of which was the consumption of collagen. Many salons and health shops are now stocking hydrolyzed collagen, and it’s making waves as a new uber supplement thanks to the high bioavailability and absorption rate into the body. It has numerous benefits, from stronger nails to glossy hair and glowing skin, to improving energy levels, joint health, and even improving your mental faculties thanks to the concentration of B vitamins. bubbly woman with a flair for fashion, Coreen Cronje had wasted 15 years in an abusive relationship and was finally ready to get in touch with her “old self”. Fortunately, as Coreen participated in Mooimaak, kykNET’s popular makeover show, the Skin Renewal team lead by Dr. Dalize Willemse and therapist Zaan Pienaar could help her do it.

A CO2 laser removes the outer layers of dead, damaged skin and encourages fresh, new collagen to grow. It’s a great way to target severe sun damage and deep wrinkles so we applied two sessions to Coreen’s mouth area that was plagued by smoker’s lines, despite her never smoking. She loved the payoff, describing her results as “the most beautiful, flawless, glowing skin and faded wrinkles!”

PLUMP UP THE VOLUME! Coreen’s severe volume loss was an easy fix thanks to a variety of injectable fillers. These have an instant plumping effect and, if strategically placed, can even lift the skin in the lower parts of the face. “I walked out with cheeks in the right place, no more lines on my jaw, a chin, kissable lips and the angry frown was gone!” says Coreen.

NEW THREADS We lifted Coreen’s face and neck further by injecting dissolvable sutures known as PDO anchor threads just below the surface of her skin in strategic places. After a couple of months, the threads will dissolve, but as they encourage a collagen scaffolding to grow in the area they were placed, her new look will linger much longer.

We’re lucky to have access to Holla Trails; a safe, multi-use outdoor space for trail running and mountain biking enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels. Life & Style caught up with Holla Trails’ brand ambassador and familiar Salt Rock face, Pippa McGregor, to find out how she juggles it all, and why Holla is her trail of choice. Q: As a mom of two small boys how do you juggle your training and motherhood? A: It really is a juggle, and the only way I am able to do it is to be super organised and plan my running sessions in advance. I always run very early in the mornings, often when the kids are still asleep. I also like to go early as it sets the tone for the day. Running definitely makes me a better mom, so even on those mornings when my alarm goes off and I have had very little sleep and am exhausted, I still try and go for a run as I always feel reenergised afterwards and never regret that run. Q: How long have you been running at Holla? A: 10 years Q: Who do you normally run with? A: I run with an amazing bunch of likeminded, trail-loving friends. On the odd occasion when we can arrange a babysitter, I get to run with my hubby Hank Mcgregor (a world champ paddler) but he is not easy to keep up with!

Call 082 899 3114 or email trailmaster@hollatrails.co.za. Find Holla Trails at Sugar Rush Park, Esenembe road, Ballito. pic Chris Allan Photo

Q: What do you love most about trail running as opposed to road running? A: Running on the trails is so different to the road. One tends to adopt the pace of nature. I find that when I am on the trails, I slow down and I naturally breathe, feel,

smell and listen to the natural beauty around me. Q: Do you run for fun or do you compete? A: I like to say that I do it for fun as it is my ‘fun time’. I am not a professional athlete and it certainly isn’t my main priority in life, but I do have a little competitive streak that sometimes comes out! I do always give it my all when I line up at a race. Q: What is your favourite route at Holla? A: Silver. Q: What do you love most about Holla Trails? A: The trails are phenomenal and, even better, is that they are right on our doorstep, which means it’s super convenient and accessible. The many kilometres of beautifully manicured single track and well-marked trails never cease to blow me away. Q: Any words of wisdom for newbie trail runners? A: Trail running always gives me perspective. All of life’s little problems seem so insignificant and far away and everything makes more sense. Make the trails your go-to place and most importantly find a reliable group of adventurous, trail-loving friends to get you going and enjoy each run with!

Most South Africans love Mexican food and, when it’s good, it turns an ordinary occasion into a fiesta! We are delighted that Salsa at the Lifestyle Centre has been revitalized with an excellent team and the food has never been better. This week we recommend two of their signature dishes:

Mamas Platos Mama’s Platos marry Mexican flavours with South African taste. From marinated pangrilled prawns and calamari served on a bed of Mexican rice, to grilled Arrachera sirloin steak or succulent fillet steak, to the best of both worlds with prawn and fillet skewers marinated in a tradional orange and lime dressing and served with Mexican red rice, these platos sll pack a Mexican flavour punch, without the usual torlla!

Churros

IN OUR MONTHLY PROMOTIONS

A fing way to complete our ‘Magic of Mexican food’ series is with a tradional Mexican dessert, a delicious fried dough treat, dipped in honey syrup and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. They also serve a Churro milkshake which is definitely worth a try!

Yo u C a n N o b e S e r i o u s ‌ Ever heard of a one-hundred percent recyclable car that can park vertically, drives on three wheels, is electric, and offers a built-in espresso maker? Neither had we.

E

STONIAN start-up, Nobe, has just revealed its first electric car - and its making some bold claims.

Not only does it have a 260km range but it's also being touted as being 'fully recyclable', has a built-in espresso maker and can be parked upright so you can fit it in a tight space using a special mount. And if that's not unusual enough, it's also a three-wheeler. The only problem is you can't buy one... yet. Pre-orders for the Nobe 100 are available via a crowdfunding site as the firm seeks funding to bolster production. The vehicle, which takes its styling cues from cars from 'vintage America' can be 100 percent recycled and - like Teslas - can be upgraded with firmware to add additional features and autonomous driving technology. Perhaps its most usable feature is how it can be parked - or stored. Using what the firm calls a 'gekko' parking rig, it can be kept vertically to save road space or take up less room on your driveway, garden or garage. Plug it into a fast charger and the batteries - of which there are no details currently - can be replenished in two hours. And if you want more range than the standard 260km on offer, owners can purchase a portable 'suitcase' battery that extends driving limits on a full charge to 310km. They need to raise about two million Rand to go into production. We think it’s rather cool!
