UMHLANGA TO BALLITO

L

ANGUAGE is an interesting thing – a collection of sounds and rules with nuances and inflections that are almost impossible to discern unless you happen to be native to the language.

The English language is particularly peculiar and extraordinarily complex, given the fact that versions of it are spoken as the so called “mother tongue” in so many different countries around the world. I am of an era that where elocution was mandatory in “good” schools and I can clearly recall being drilled in “diction” and “pronunciation” in an attempt to get us to speak like the upper class. Anything less than the Queen’s English delivered in a clear, clipped “hot potato” style delivery, was considered a reflection of poor breeding – and that was in Benoni…hard to imagine a more incongruous setting for such genteel word-smithing! Fast forward to 2018 and I can feel the earth vibrating furiously from those long gone elocution teachers spinning furiously in their graves at the present day official mangling of English as she was never supposed to be spoke. We have eleven official languages in

South Africa with English being native to a small minority of less than 10% of the population. Yet, in our official collective and commercial wisdom, English is the chosen language of communication. So, we are creating a new sounding version of the language which is how language evolves and we should embrace it as we move with the times. But when someone deliberately hides behind a wall of hopelessly confused English in an attempt to deflect from their obvious malfeasance, I must confess to becoming a little more than impatient with them. Take the recent utterances of one Ace Magashule as widely reported in the media:

“I met with Zuma, but I did not intend on meeting with Zuma as a meeting is not necessarily a meeting to meet individuals but rather a meeting intended to meet with him in a capacity that we had already met.”

Ace Magashule If you are out of touch and unaware of who he is or what he represents, or indeed the context to which the above statement refers, I envy your disconnection from our common collective political reality. You don’t, however, get much of a view with your head in the sand…but I digress. I believe he is becoming increasingly marginalised since news of the meeting

referred to was made public - uneasy lies the head that wears the crown! On a somewhat different tack, singer/ songwriter, Andre de Villiers was in town recently. He played to a packed house, but the performance was marred by people who continued to speak loudly through his entire performance. I suppose it is difficult for some, to distinguish between background entertainment – musical décor, so to speak, and this type of performance which is closer to live theatre. Sadly the performance was cut short as a result. Maybe we need to explain how to behave at events like these to get the most enjoyment out of them. My old elocution teacher would have been perfect for the job! Welcome to another edition of L&S also online at www.lifeandstyle.fm C

THE ANTI-WEIGHT LOSS HORMONE KIM WILSON - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

L

ET me paint a picture. You’ve decided “summer is coming” and “summer bodies are made in winter”, so you’ve been working out 5 or 6 days a week. You have thrown out all of the temptations in the pantry and swapped them for salads. You step on the scale after a few weeks, expecting a

day goes on. If, however, we have a high amount of stress in our day-to-day lives, cortisol levels can stay elevated chronically. When this happens, it is VERY difficult to balance your blood sugar, as well as to lose fat tissue. This is where a very busy, stressful lifestyle plus a high intensity exercise program may in fact not be helping you achieve your weight-loss goals. Please note: moderate exercise daily can really help to lower stress and cortisol levels. So what I’m talking about now is when you ramp up your training to far higher levels than you are used to. KEEP CORTISOL LEVELS BALANCED 1.Get a good nights sleep, every night. Sleep helps with everything. In this case, deep, quality sleep helps to clear the excess cortisol in our bloodstream, bringing us back down to a healthy baseline level. Aim for a consistent sleep pattern i.e. go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, and for 6 – 8 hours

dramatic change, only to see that not much has happened. I can hear your reaction, “what the…”?! There may be one culprit at work here, I call it the “anti-weight-loss” hormone: Cortisol.

A busy lifestyle creates stress, this is something that we are all familiar with. It takes a very special effort to maintain calm in the chaos of life. Add to your “normal” work-family-life chaos the demands of a high intensity interval training program, and a caloriecontrolled eating plan, and you may be totally overwhelming your body. HOW DOES CORTISOL WORK? Cortisol is a steroid hormone. It is responsible for a variety of processes within the body. These include regulation of your metabolism and the immune response, and acting as an anti-inflammatory. Cortisol also plays a vital role in regulating how our bodies respond to stress. The level of cortisol in our body at any time can play an important role in overall health. Too much cortisol can lead to rapid weight gain, elevated blood pressure, mood swings, and even muscle weakness. Too little cortisol on the other hand can lead to dizziness, fatigue, weight loss and a strange darkening of the skin in certain areas. Luckily our bodies have a regulation system in place for cortisol balance, and will make sure we have the right amount for the right time of day. We tend to have a higher amount of cortisol in the blood when we wake up in the morning, which then tapers off as the

you can first. Then if the weight still seems to be hanging on for dear life, there are some nutrients to support you. 1.Rhodiola Rosea Rhodiola is an adaptogenic herb, meaning it strives to bring balance back to the body’s natural rhythms. Rhodiola helps to reduce fatigue, stress, inflammation, and depression. The recommended dose is between 280 – 680mg daily*. 2.Phosphatidylserine Phosphatidylserine is a compound naturally present in brain tissue, but has been shown to naturally decrease with age. This compound helps to improve memory as well as lower cortisol levels due to its calming effect on the brain. You can get phosphtidylserine from certain foods but further benefits would be shown through supplementation. The recommended dose is 100mg daily, taken up to 3 x daily*. 3.Ashwagandha Ashwagandha is another adaptogen, supplemented primarily for its antianxiety benefits. Beyond the benefits for insomnia and stress-induced depression, ashwagandha has also been shown

to significantly reduce cortisol concentrations and support the immune system through periods of stress. The recommended, and most cost-effective, dose is 300 – 500mg daily, but you can take up to 6000mg daily*. Other notable supplements for soothing the effects of stress on the body are vitamin C, Omega 3 fish oils and vitamin D. However, the above 3 nutrients specifically target cortisol levels. FINAL THOUGHTS Cortisol may just be the secret agent working against you to prevent you achieving your weight loss goals. If you have a highly chaotic lifestyle and are now trying to throw high levels of exercise into the mix, your body will need some support to keep cortisol at bay. In balancing your cortisol, the weight loss should finally kick in. *Consult your Doctor if you are on any specific medications, to make sure that the supplements you take will be suitable for you.

NOW AVAILABLE AT LIFESTYLE HEALTH

MetaRelax DESIGNED TO HELP PROMOTE RESTFUL SLEEP, POSITIVE MOOD, AND RELAXATION every night. 2.Get regular exercise A regular exercise pattern including moderate intensity exercise for 30 – 45 mins, 5 days weekly is great at keeping stress and cortisol levels under control. 3.Include some form of yoga and meditation, regularly Both yoga and meditation have been clinically proven to lower cortisol levels. Ideally take at least 10 minutes every day simply to do some deep breathing/ meditation/ prayer to help decrease your cortisol levels. 4.Watch your caffeine intake High amounts of caffeine can spike cortisol levels. You may want to cut back on the caffeine when your stress levels are running particularly high. If, however, you are a regular “balanced” coffee drinker, say 1 – 2 cups daily, then you are likely not going to experience this same spike. Moderation is key. CAN SUPPLEMENTS HELP? Always make Diet and Lifestyle changes first. Always. Put the above recommendations into practice as best

FISHING PADDLE SKIS STEVE HONEYSETT

O

Each morning when I am out inspecting our beaches, I run into a number of these fishermen heading out to try their luck at catching themselves a fish or two and it interests me how much equipment you need to have. So to get started, you need a fishing ski and a paddle - not an easy choice as there are many out there and it probably comes down to what you can afford . Standard fibreglass, Carbon Fibre and Kevlar are the three most common materials used in the construction of these boats and of course the resins that bond everything together make a ski of varying weights. Shapes play an important role where some are narrow and streamline designed for speed when trawling, and some are designed for not moving too much and sitting in one place on a reef. Paddles vary in shape and materials that are pretty much the same as the skis where you can have a pair of expensive light paddles or standard fibreglass economy line type, but all seem to take the modern shape of the canoe race paddle. Then there is your fishing gear which, depending again on what your pocket can afford, can be a huge difference. Rods and reels - some have one, and others have several. Tackle boxes with an assortment of hooks, lures, sinkers and trawling devices that are stored into the hull of the boat are also mandatory for the paddle ski fisherman. Some even have battery operated fish finders mounted onto the decks tp assist them in locating fish.

Some have live bait wells like a built in fish tank with pumps and filters that are designed to keep your bait alive for when you need it. Then on top of all that you will need to consider your own safety to comply with the maritime requirements. Life Jacket, Dry Bags for your cell phone and emergency flares are all requirements as well and some may even carry a bilge pump to pump out excess water if required and a small repair kit for running repairs. Pack that all into your ski and make sure that you have your fishing licence and, away you go! Still there seems to be more and more of these paddle craft out on the water each year - a cheaper alternative to purchasing a ski boat with motors or a jet ski. What also makes it appealing is the freedom that one still has with a paddle ski that does not have to be launched from a launch site and the costs of having to join a ski boat club and pay launch fees. Yes, you will need to be registered with a paddle ski club as you are supposed to record your catch on the national catch register for our fisheries department so that their experts can monitor species catches and predict future numbers . All of this equipment comes at a pretty price and can be gathered over a period of time, but also can be lost through bad judgement when negotiating through the surf. This is the hardest part of this sport and the part that will make or break your decision to continue to fish or to place your tail between your legs and run for the hills. If you are starting out, get some advice from the experts and when you finally get to put your ski on the water. make sure you choose the right day to fish and always watch the coastal whether conditions. I have seen many a new person to the sport have their hopes dashed by not observing the conditions and damaging their newly acquired equipment. Live within your means and enjoy your fishing.

CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY – AND GOING BATS!

H

I Everyone,

This is National Heritage month and it’s time to reflect on the incredible diversity in our country and respect our differences to make this one of the happiest places on earth. If we each took time out to acknowledge different cultural practices and understand the importance of cultural intelligence to relate and work effectively in culturally diverse situations, life would be a breeze. I recently attended a talk on diversity and was introduced to an interesting system (the Lewis model) that highlights our differences, so that we have a better understanding of who we are dealing with. Europeans in the cooler climes, for instance, belong in the cool, factual, decisive and plan orientated group; Africans, Indians, Mediterranean folk and people from the Middle East belong in the warm, emotional, loquacious and impulsive group; People from the Far East are usually courteous, amiable, accommodating and compromising. So there we go. Invite different people from all of these groups around for a braai and you’ll be in for fascinating time! GOING BATS. We’re heading for a long hot summer, and with summer comes all the fun little fellows that drive us nuts – like mosquitoes and flies. Last year was particularly bad for mosquitoes as there was so much stagnant water around. It’s wonderful to know that there are creatures out there that are trying hard to control the mosquito and bug population, and save us the trouble of messing up

the environment with the use of toxic sprays. A single, small insectivorous bat, for instance, apparently consumes an incredible 5000 mosquito sized insects in one hour. A small colony of bats can therefore consume over 200,000 insects in one night. Bat boxes are an ideal way to attract bats to your garden. If you live in a complex, you should not have a problem with your body corporate with regards to getting permission to erect them on your private property - as long as your neighbours don’t object. Bats are a wonderful part of our eco system and they are not a health hazard, as some people might think. Here is what bat expert and environmental scientist, Kate MacEwan from O Inkululeko Wildlife Services had to say: “Bats are harmless, shy and vulnerable creatures and will never attack a human unless threatened. Bat boxes have been safely installed worldwide to help encourage their population, and to my knowledge there have never been any health related issues. Bat boxes also encourage bats to leave house roofs and ceilings and instead utilize the box.” According to Kate, the estimated value of bats to the United States agricultural industry is approx. $22.9 billion a year. In South Africa, bats

GLENDA THOMPSON

have been proven to be very economically important to the sugar-cane and Mac. Nut industry in terms of reducing crop/orchard destroying pests. So there we have it. If you want to get those bats out of your ceiling but you also see the importance of assisting the environment by giving them an alternate home, ask Kate to come along and give a talk to your neighbours on the importance of bats and the Bat Box. You can reach her on info@iws-sa.co.za www.iws-sa.co.za She doesn’t sell bat boxes but she can back their validity! Contact me on gjthomo@gmail.com if you have any consumer related enquiries.

From raw juices to freshly roasted coffees, as well as a scrumptious range of delicious meals and nibbles – like their famous artisanal sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, pastas and steak or for the sweet tooth, their devilishly decadent praline cheesecake… a decadent caramel cheesecake topped with caramelized pecans… need we say more? Sweet or savoury, you’re sure to find your own favourite.

BMW Reveals Its New Electric, Driverless SUV

B

MW has revealed its new electric, driverless SUV that comes kitted out with a number of gadgets straight out of a Bond film.

Due to be released in 2021 as a production car, the Vision iNext features revolutionary ideas including ‘interactive seats’. Promotional video and images show passengers in the rear adjusting music volume by pinching the seats. Passengers will also be able to zoom in on the sat-nav map with the same motion on the front armrest console. The video shows the futuristic vehicle parking itself without a driver in it. BMW promises that driverless technology will have advanced enough by 2021 to make it possible. The 4x4 has suicide doors - which open back-to-front - a seemingly transparent panoramic roof and very slim strips for headlights and taillights. But the sleek design hasn’t impressed everyone. The front grille has been mocked on social media - where it was compared to a fish’s mouth and beaver’s teeth. The video shows an electronics system in the back of the car which projects images onto a blank book so that its pages act as screens. The steering wheel also collapses into the dashboard when not in use, as well as in driverless mode.
