I

N the previous edition of Life & Style I wrote about Puppy the kitten who had taken up residence in the vicinity of our radio studio and captured the hearts of so many regular visitors to the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito. This is because Puppy has beaten the odds so far and continues to do so in a precarious world.

Abandoned as she must have been – yes, I know in the previous article I inferred that Puppy was a boy…but, it’s not easy to tell at this age, and I was relying entirely on the word of Chrissy Jackson the cat lady who captured her for neutering and inoculations, as well as the bill I received from the Ballito Veterinary Clinic for the procedure. However, as confirmed by Dr Kevin Stevens at a social gathering last week, abdominal stitches would suggest that the kitten was spayed rather than neutered – a technicality, I know, but one that suggests rather overwhelmingly that puppy is indeed a little girl cat. But I digress… Abandoned as she must have been as a really tiny kitten, she somehow managed to survive until she discovered the world of 88FM on the edge of the walkway between the Market at the Lifestyle Centre and the Mica Nursery. By hiding under the containerised radio studio with access to both the centre and the plants in the nursery, she remained safe from harm, living on whatever scraps she could solicit. Gradually she became less shy and actually started to approach people, desperate as she was to be wanted. Last week she ventured into the

studio for the first time and after a bit of coaxing she allowed us to touch her. Soon she was nestling into a warm lap for a little love and discovered that she could purr. I think it was the first time she had experienced this because she

looked really startled when the purring started – almost as if it wasn’t coming from her! Puppy is still a free spirit, but she has a good supply of premium kitten food in the studio pantry and plenty of affection from the 88FM team when she wants it. And so many regular visitors to the centre have taken a shine to her watching as she attacks the giant mops the cleaners use to keep the centre immaculate, or sunning herself on the deck outside the studio. Thanks to everyone who has donated a little food or other items to help her. I assure you that we will continue to try to keep her safe until we can find a real home for her. On a different tack, we broadcast live from Hirsch’s Ballito on the weekend of their big birthday sale and, despite the fact that South Africa is technically in a recession, we helped them hit their target for the weekend. It was a really astonishing number and I am confident that the exposure they received through this initiative was the principal driver behind the success of this event. We love the fact that Ballito has its own radio station which, together with our print media and online platforms is driving strong business for our advertisers and keeps the community informed and entertained. If all the messages that we receive from people on a regular basis are anything to go by, it would appear that Life & Style enjoys the overwhelming support of the community in this super part of the world. But we are constantly working on raising the bar and we are delighted to welcome Jason McCall to the team. Jason has spent many years producing top shows on big radio stations and the fact that he has chosen to join us now is exciting. Stay tuned to 88FM and keep reading Life & Style - there are some fabulous developments that are about to materialise shortly and you’ll be the first to know about them! ASHTON MATRICS SHINE AT VALEDICTORY

W

ITH the final few days before writing their final examinations, and a celebration of their school career achievements, Ashton held their Valedictory function on Friday 12 October. The class of 2018 have a busy time ahead as they prepare for their final IEB examinations, as well as the Cambridge Assessment International Education examinations, on both A and AS level. “The students produced an outstanding set of results following their trial examinations and we are looking forward to excellent results final 2018 all round,” said Mrs Jenny van Buuren, Senior College Head. “We are also extremely proud of the fact that so many of our students have achieved exceptionally well in their final external Cambridge examinations written earlier this year, she added.

At the Valedictory Awards function held on Friday in the Grace Hall, Gabriel Delamere clinched the outstanding Achiever Award for Cambridge AS Level, Courtney Koopmans was the Proxime Accessit on Cambridge A Level, and Maryia Piatrova clinched the Cambridge A Level DUX with an average of 82,13. On the IEB Curriculum, Timothy Sharrock outshone the girls to take the IEB DUX Award with an average of 86%, and eight subject distinctions, pipping IEB Proxime Accessit Brooklyn Milne whose final average was 85%. Sharrock scored 96,2% for Advanced Programme Mathematics, 94,3% for Life Orientation, 92% for Mathematics and 84% for Life Sciences. With these outstanding results, he was also awarded the Outstanding Achiever Award. Six students were

2018 IEB DUX – Timothy Sharrock

awarded Academic School Honours for an average above 80%. In addition to celebrating the excellence in academics, excellence in sport and culture was also recognised. Austin Byrne was named the Sportsman of the Year and Mika O’Meara was awarded the Sportswoman of the Year. While Ashton’s sport has grown in leaps and bounds, cultural activities have not taken a back seat, and Reeson Pillay was awarded the Monique Venter Trophy for contributing towards the continuous growth of Culture at the school, and he will be remembered as the Lion in Wizard of Oz and the Genie in the 2018 production of Aladdin. The Goodfellowship award, as voted for by the matric students for matric student who was a role model to his peers and being a leader, and always upheld Ashton’s name, was awarded to Braden Plekker. The All Souls’ Award for consistent service to the School, in the classroom and in all other areas of school life was shared between Shannon Oellermann and Austin Byrne. “We were extremely excited this year, as four of our students were recipients of bursaries for tertiary

F one had to hit the PAUSE button now and travel back eleven years and ten months to 2007, our current Matrics would have been starting their Grade 1 year in BIG SCHOOL. For some, it was the beginning of an adventure, for others it was traumatic – particularly for the parents. Both Moms and Dads teary eyed and finding it very difficult to leave their precious ones.

It has been a slow and steady progression, but yet time has flown by. One might reflect back on 2007 and some famous events – like Steve Jobs announces the iPhone. JK Rowling finishes her seventh and final Harry Potter novel. Carrie Underwood wins a Grammy Award. South Africa defeats England 15-6 to clinch the Rugby World Cup. It was also the first broadcast of the Big Bang Theory and Gossip Girl. FAST FORWARD to the present and one can only marvel at what has transpired during that time. Time stands still for nobody and the present Matrics are realising that twelve years of work is going to be tested (examined) over the next couple of weeks. It does not matter that you played 1st Team Rugby or Provincial Action Netball or whether you played the lead role in a school production. Your challenge is going to have to enter the School Hall (now a formal examination centre), to sit down and to allow your mind and pen to capture what you have learnt over a period of time. For some of you, this is what you have been waiting for, this is your time to shine. For others it is a matter of ‘Well, it’s part of growing up and has to be done’, whilst a good number are anticipating a nervous (nerve wracking) couple of weeks. Without a doubt, each and every student will box themselves in and pay attention to what is relevant and give of their best. What would be interesting is to press the FORWARD button 12 years into the future and see what role these students would play and in what capacity. On behalf of our College we would like to extend well wishes to all Matriculants, in both the Government and Independent Schools as they complete the final leg of their twelve year journey. It’s your time to shine!!

study, and we believe these students will make us proud as they start the next leg of their journey,” said Mrs van Buuren. Our sincere appreciation to General Energy for two 100% scholarships which were awarded to Tyler Naidoo, who will be studying Mechatronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University, and Noluthando Dlamini. The 2018 CAMBRIDGE A LEVELS DUX – two recipient of the 50% scholarships Maryia Piatrova to Varsity College were awarded to Joanie Cassidy and Christopher Horlock. Ashton International College offers students the Best of Both Worlds, with the Cambridge International Examinations and the Independent Education Board Examinations curricula being offered on the campus. The results of the IEB Matric examinations will be released on 3 January 2019, and the Matthew du Rand (Deputy Head Boy); Rachel Cambridge results are expected on Clewlow (Head Girl); Trent Strydom (Head 20 January 2019. Boy); Venetia Booysen (Deputy Head Girl)

THE OVER USE OF TECHNOLOGY A REALITY CHECK GLENDA THOMPSON -CONSUMER COLUMN

H

I EVERYONE,

In this week’s column we are covering a hot topic that affects us all. For those of you with children under the age of 7 – it is particularly relevant to you as you have the power to change things now to ensure that your children do not suffer long term effects. The subject matter in question? The overuse of technology – and in particular, what too much screen time can do to a child’s brain. We recently attended a talk by Dr Marlena Kruger a whole-brain learning and techno-life wellness expert. She is on a mission to raise awareness among young and old about how the overuse of technology alters our brains and bodies, detrimentally affecting learning, productivity, relationships and wellbeing. “Technology is a wonderful thing, but it can also be very dangerous.

It’s as insidious as cancer, as deadly as a heart attack or a stroke, and as dangerous as alcoholism. And because it’s still so relatively new, it’s a field that is vastly under-researched. Why do you think countries the world over have banned its use in certain settings? It’s one of the reasons why we have a problem with obesity, because of the sedentary lifestyles that we lead, sitting behind a screen all day.” Says Marlena. “Many people are overwhelmed by the overstimulated world of technology and social media; their brains and bodies are getting tired and drained and they experience Digital Dementia. Screen interactions leave us much more stressed, anxious and depressed instead of being invigorated and uplifted. Instead of being full of vitality, creative and joyful, many of us are becoming dumb, numb and just want more instant gratification. We need to start encouraging and mentoring each other to become proactive by developing our distinctive human knowledge, skills and

PLASTIC APOCALYPSE

characters so that we will be healthy and real-world-ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Only if we maintain our distinctive humanness and master Techno Life Wellness, will we prevent being replaced by robots and artificial intelligence. In order to protect ourselves from harm, and to ensure that we are functioning as humans, we have to check our use of devices. Balance is how we restore the pace and peace of our lives.” Marlena concludes. Backing this up is Dr Aric Sigman, an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society of Medicine – with regards to how too much screen time can have an extremely detrimental effect on children. “When small children get hooked on TV, tablets or smartphones they can unintentionally cause permanent damage to their still-developing brains. Too much screen time too soon is the very thing IMPEDING the development of the child’s abilities that parents are so eager to foster through the

use of tablets. The ability to focus, to concentrate, to lend attention, to sense other people’s attitudes and communicate with them, to build a large vocabulary – all those abilities are harmed. “When a young child spends too much time in front of a screen and not enough getting required stimuli from the REAL world, their development becomes stunted – and not just for a while. If the damage happens through the crucial early years, its results can affect them forever. Food for thought – especially with long holidays coming up when it becomes so easy to plonk a child in front of a tablet or TV to keep them occupied when they get bored! Thanks for your feedback from these columns. Keep your opinions coming – gjthomo@gmail.com.

THE MAYOR HOLDS A PRAYER CEREMONY FOR OUR MATRICS

STEVE HONEYSETT

T

HE other day I took a ride on my Fat Bike along the beach up to Jex Estate which is opposite the Umvoti River. It was a training ride in preparation for a week long adventure of riding from Kosi Bay along the beach to St Lucia a distance of 180 km and I noticed how much plastic there is washed up on our shores.

The ocean never stops working and you will hear me speak about how it constantly moves tons of sand around sometimes overnight. With this constant movement it has the ability to cover and uncover just about anything and possibly the tides uncovered the plastic that had been buried some time back. The main culprits are the plastic bottle caps , plastic cap ring fasteners , ear buds and an assortment of broken down pieces of plastic - all of these posing a threat to the marine life . The plastic nurdles that the department of environmental affairs has been trying to clean up for the past six months are still washing up and adding to the other plastic rubbish on our beaches which got me thinking . Obviously to start you tackle the source and that’s to avoid buying plastic but that is only the beginning and governments should put pressure on companies to look at alternatives for their products rather than using plastic. We need to drastically change our mind set when it comes to plastic. The other day I was asked to supply a shoe box filled with items for a Christmas charity group and I immediately began to fill it with plastic goods that will at some time end up in one of our rivers and find its way down to the ocean. There are a lot of countries starting to clean up and looking at reducing the impact that plastic has caused. Thirty years ago it was deemed a wonder of the modern world but today it’s looked upon as a destroyer of the modern world. So starting today, do your bit for our planet and head out for that walk with a plastic bag to pick up some plastic rubbish and throw it into a plastic bin. We will never eradicate plastic as it is too deeply entrenched into our way of life but try cut down its use and let’s see if we can make a difference.

TIPS FROM THE LIFESTYLE HEALTH TEAM Travel Essentials for a Healthy Holiday KIM WILSON - LIFESTYLE HEALTH

L

ET’S be honest, the majority of us are working towards a holiday at any given point. Be it the weekend, the long weekend or a heavenly week or two of annual leave, we all have a mental countdown in place.

Holidays are meant to be enjoyed in good health. There is nothing worse than being sick when you should be enjoying freedom from your 9 – 5. Two members of our Lifestyle Health team recently took a trip across the world, and we wanted to share with you our top tips for staying healthy on holiday. PRE-BOARDING ESSENTIALS: BUILD YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM IN ADVANCE This one is straightforward. Prevention is key if you’re going to be in a pressurized cabin for an extended period of time where the air conditioner is blasting and it seems like EVERYONE around you is coughing or sneezing. For the week leading up to your break, make sure you take great care to support your immune system by increasing your intake of vitamin C, zinc and Echinacea. You also want to get enough sleep, and perhaps avoid any family members with an illness. IN-FLIGHT SERVICE: SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM Remember that the air inside an airplane is extremely dry, and as such dries out your mucus membranes in your nose and mouth. We need this mucus membrane to be moist to mount an immune response to pathogens, which is why we tend to pick up colds and flus on long flights. To counter this, stay hydrated, and take a small saline nasal spray to keep your nasal membranes moist. CHECKED IN LUGGAGE: 1. Vitamin C and Zinc In your checked-in luggage, it is a good idea to take a supply of vitamin C and zinc. If you still pick up a flu bug on the flight you are going to want to counter it as soon as possible by dosing yourself with vitamin C and zinc. Vitamin C helps to support your immune system in the fight against infection and helps reduce colds and flu symptoms. Likewise, Zinc supports your immune system and will reduce both the severity and duration of the infection. 2. Liver Support Holidays are generally times for celebration. As with all celebrations, we tend to eat (and drink) more than we usually would, and we tend to indulge in more decadent items than normal. This means our livers will be slightly more loaded with toxins than usual. Again, we want to avoid feeling less than 100% on holiday, so make sure to

pack some liver support to keep you feeling fresh and hangover-free. Some great options are Solgar Milk Thistle, Viridian Organic Milk Thistle, Medford Liverscript or A Vogel Boldocynara. Milk Thistle is the main ingredient in all of the aforementioned supplements. Milk thistle helps encourage liver repair after injury to the cells, controls inflammation, and protects against glutathione depletion. Glutathione is part of our major antioxidant pathway in the liver so any nutrient that supports this system is great for us! 3. Activated Charcoal As mentioned, two of our team members travelled to Bali recently for a family function. The concern in Bali for tourists who try out the local cuisine from the small Warungs (cafés) is apparently called “Bali Belly”. It is actually really common for travellers to pick up gastroenteritis on holiday simply by ingesting foods that we are not used to. To keep you on the beach and out of the bathroom, take some activated charcoal with you. 4. Digestive Enzymes Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) type symptoms are actually quite common on holiday. Bloating, reflux, constipation, or diarrhea really can throw a spanner in the works. To help you cope with eating foods that you aren’t used to, digestive enzymes are amazing. Simply put, these help you effectively break down the foods you ingest. If you take digestive enzymes anywhere from 15 – 30 mins before your meal, you will avoid the nasty symptoms mentioned above. 5. Natural Anti-Inflammatory Whilst this may not be as “essential” as the above, it is not uncommon to get some sort of ache or pain whilst travelling. Be it a headache from a night of celebrating, or aching legs from a long day of exploring, you may need some anti-inflammatory support. Our favourite supplement for this is a good quality turmeric or curcumin supplement. Curcumin has a good safety profile, supports the liver, is anti-inflammatory and is a potent antioxidant. You can take it in higher doses when actively inflamed, or in a smaller dose on a daily basis for general support. FINAL THOUGHTS Holidays are really good for us. It’s incredible what taking a week or two off can do for your health. It recharges the batteries, gets that stress level back under control, and allows for important time with friends and family. We want you to fully experience the joy of a holiday without worrying about your health. Keep the above tips in mind to make sure you have a happy healthy holiday!

ESCAPE TO THE CAVERN GLENDA & LAUREN THOMPSON

I

N the constant hustle and bustle of everyday life it has become increasingly difficult to find time to calm the mind and reconnect with oneself and nature. Time for you and your family is incredibly important to function at the optimal level and just for your own sanity to be kept on track. To this end, there is nothing quite like a trip to the Northern Drakensberg to restore balance. Surrounded by the sprawling mountain range and the crisp clear air, it makes you realize what a truly beautiful and awe-inspiring country we live in.

Our destination was The Cavern, a gorgeous getaway that nestles gently in the foothills of the towering Northern Drakensburg. It has belonged to the Carte family for 75 years, and each generation seems to have poured their love into this magical home from home haven. It all started with a letter from Bill Carte to his girlfriend Ruth just before WW2. “Ruth my darling. I plea as never before. Put your trust in me. Marry me and be my mate in building up a home and farm second to none in South Africa.” Ruth accepted Bill’s proposal, the farm became a thriving

resort and is now undoubtedly one of the most popular get away spots in the Northern Berg. We were there for the ambience – and the Yoga. . An early morning yoga session is the perfect way to ease into a day of exploring what lies ahead. Well known North Coast resident and Yoga Guru, Helen Weaver was the instructor for the Yoga Retreat weekend, and for those not familiar with yoga, but determined to give it a try, Helen was able to work at all levels – from the novice to old hands. Steeped in rich history and a National Heritage site, there is so much to see and experience in this part of the Drakensburg – and at the Cavern itself. They have considered everything – from fine dining and wine tasting evenings, to tennis and bowls and walks in the forest where there are three species of Yellowwood (some are the oldest in the country) that make up a large part of the Fern Forest walking tour. Our guide, Sphile Mlangeni, was a fountain of knowledge on the walking tours in helping to identify the myriad species of plants and bird

life of which a large number are endemic to the area. One of the longer walking tours is to the fascinating Cannibal caves. Many years ago the local tribe in the area were driven to starvation as a result of being overrun by Shaka’s invading legions. They hid in the caves and resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. This part of the Drakensburg is also rich in Bushmen paintings and age-old rock art, and one can still spot the antelope that have roamed the region for thousands of years – the well- muscled, graceful Eland. Incidentally, a free massage is also part of the deal if you go on a retreat! Nothing like winding right down with one before heading home! Visit their web site on www.thecavern.co.za

T

HE million dollar question of all time. A simple Google search on the subject renders over 250 million websites promising miracle cures and theories. Statistically there are over 1.6 billion people in the world today who are overweight. Citizens of the United States annually spend on average $30billion trying to lose weight. This is a multi-billion dollar industry and yet more and more people are becoming over weight. What are we doing wrong? Why can’t this lucrative industry get it right?

If the answer and solution were that simple there would not be an obesity epidemic. The point is that successful weight loss is not easy to achieve. There is no such thing as a ‘quick fix’ and if something sounds ‘too good to be true’ then it probably is. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight comes from your personal commitment to do so, and personal motivating factors that outweigh any other desire. Slim people are not just ‘naturally that way’, neither are they ‘lucky’. They have made a conscious decision to lead a healthy lifestyle and probably work hard at maintaining this on a daily basis through diet and/or exercise. You have to be ready to lose weight and have to be committed to act on that desire to lose weight. The concept of energy balance is a simple one. It is well known that a nutritional intake in excess of a person’s nutritional requirements will result in weight gain. A person who understands their nutritional requirements and who can demonstrate discipline when it comes to their nutritional intake will lose weight. People are capable of being disciplined in various aspects of their life; acquiring a university qualification,

starting a company, training for a marathon, raising children all require discipline. If we can be disciplined in so many other areas of our lives why can’t we be disciplined with our nutritional intake? The question then comes down to what possible psychological and emotional variables influence our eating habits. Another variable at play is the idea that a commitment to a healthy lifestyle for weight maintenance is forever. This is a daunting thought. Most other areas of our lives requiring discipline tend to have an end point in sight. The trick is knowing how to achieve a balance between being disciplined for around 80% of the time so that for the other 20% we can let our hair down a bit and indulge ourselves on the spoils that the food and beverage industry has provided us with. Because let’s be honest, as much as government tries to intervene, the processed and convenience foods and drinks are here to stay. Decisions on nutritional intake that people make every single day are ultimately what determines their weight. It is often small mistakes that people make on a daily basis, such as cappuccinos over filter coffee or store bought convenience foods over home cooked meals, which add up and result in a person over consuming nutrition. This might be an excess of 500kcal per day and if this happens consistently over time, it will result in weight gain. The trouble is that our nutritional requirements are constantly changing based on factors such as age, body composition, activity level and health state to name a few. Therefore our nutritional intake should be dynamic to meet our requirements.

THE LAND ROVER DEFENDER HAS BEEN REBORN

A

FTER months is speculation, Land Rover’s much-awaited 21st century Defender replacement has been spotted on test - though lightly disguised.

It has just started testing on open roads in camouflage ahead of going on sale in 2020. A spokesman for the company said: ‘Jaguar Land Rover runs a wide range of engineering and technology development programmes. We are unable to comment on the specific nature of these programmes. However we can confirm that the Defender programme is progressing well and has reached an exciting stage of its development.’ Speculation about the size, shape and timing of the new generation Defender - the original Land Rover of 1948 - has been rife since its production ended with a series of collectors’ special editions. The Defender began as the original Land Rover and this year is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Loved by the Queen, driven by Winston Churchill and adored by millions loyal drivers including soldiers of the British Army and SAS - it was launched on April 30, 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. The original Land Rover started life as a squiggle in the sand when, shortly after the Second World War, Rover director Maurice Wilks sketched out in the sand on a beach near his holiday cottage in Anglesey the workhorse vehicle he needed to replace the American army surplus Jeep he was then using. So in 1948 Britain’s answer to the ubiquitous Jeep – the Land Rover - was born and launched at that year’s Amsterdam Motor Show as the world’s first massproduced civilian 4X4 costing £450. With post-war rationing and steel in short supply but masses of aluminium around, the vehicle was initially made with the lightweight metal. The original sage-green paint was acquired from a fighter plane factory. The first pilot preproduction model was called ‘Huey’ after its registration number ‘HUE 166’ and is fully working. Astonishingly, some three-quarters of the 2 million Wentzel Defenders ever built since then are said to Tel: 032 - 946 0568 be still in regular use. No.1 Anford Park
