resignation. The common cold slinks through communities, making people miserable for a few days without warranting much afterthought. Adults suffer an average of between two and four colds each year, and children up to 10, and we have come to accept this as an inevitable part of life. A favourite piece of popular wisdom is that antibiotics cure everything so a trip to the doctor will sort you out. But even a cursory visit to Dr Google will tell you that antibiotics are medications that fight infections caused by bacteria, but the flu is cause by a virus. Taking antibiotics when you have a virus may do more harm than good. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that may resist antibiotic treatment. Popular wisdom remains a jumble of folklore and false assumption. In 1984, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison decided to investigate one of the best-known ways of catching a cold. They infected volunteers with a cold virus and instructed them to kiss healthy test subjects on the mouth for at least one minute. (The instruction for participants was to use whichever technique was “most natural”.) Sixteen healthy volunteers were kissed by people with colds. The result: just one confirmed infection. Colds and flu generate billions of Rands, Dollars, Pounds and other currencies for big global consortiums producing “winter remedy” preparations. The Guardian Newspaper says that sales in the UK alone reach £300m each year, though most over-the-counter products have not actually been proven to work. Some contain paracetamol, an effective analgesic, but the dosage is often suboptimal. Taking vitamin C in regular

HAVE had a really heavy cold for the past few days and it doesn’t suit me at all. Apparently I am one of many who have been similarly afflicted. It’s the time of year according to popular wisdom – the change of season.

It’s a peculiar thing, this popular wisdom – a sort of general collection of commonly accepted information, much of it based on evidence that would crumble under interrogation. Take, for example, the adverts for cold and flu remedies that show sufferers experiencing rapid relief from symptoms followed by happy smiles and a general feeling of peace on earth. Well, they don’t work – at least, not like they show in the ads. It is hard to think of another disease that inspires the same level of collective

doses does little to ward off disease. Hot toddies, medicated tissues and immune system “boosts” of Echinacea or ginger are ineffective. Antibiotics do nothing for colds. The only way to protect yourself against a cold is to live in complete isolation from the rest of humanity. Although modern science has changed the way medicine is practised in almost every field, it has so far failed to produce any radically new treatments for colds. The good news is that spring has now sprung and if you have been suffering from a winter lurgy, according to popular wisdom, this too, shall pass! And on another happy matter, the opening of the spectacular Weylandts furnishing and décor store at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito was the highlight of the weekend. If you haven’t visited it yet, you have a real treat in store as you can see from our cover pic for this issue. Welcome to another issue of Life & Style also online at www.lifeandstyle.fm

OLLOWING President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Tuesday evening 31 July on national television on expropriation land without compensation , many property sellers are uncertain the effect this will have on the sale of their properties. This has especially been true in a poor housing market and recession, and also now with the added uncertainty of the amendment to the Constitution to expropriate land without compensation.

PRICE: In bad markets, price isn’t the main thing, it’s the only thing. There’s always an active market for houses that are selling for less than comparable houses in the same neighbourhood. In Ballito the time to sell most houses (especially the more upmarket houses) is measured in years not months. Yet many foreclosures sell within minutes of going on the market. Why? Because they’re cheap relative to other properties. You may not be able to sell if your house is worth less than you owe on it but if you want to sell your house fast, you’re going to have to price it right. Your agent will help, but don’t just blindly follow their advice. Visit the competition to see what homes in your neighbourhood are actually listing and selling for. But, what if you don’t like the price your agent suggests, your market justifies, or you need? Don’t sell. But don’t waste your time with a listing price based on what you paid, what you owe, what your home used to be worth or what you really wish it was worth. The only number that matters is what it’s actually worth to a buyer right now. MARKETING: If you’re going to use an agent to help sell your house, start the search by asking friends and/or neighbours for referrals. Visit nearby open houses and meet agents (and while you’re at it, start getting a feel for neighbourhood values). Compile a list of potential good agents. Request that they present you with a written marketing plan on how they intend to market your property. Choose your agent and entrust them with your mandate to work with you. The saying that:” When you list with everyone, you are no one’s responsibility” is very true. An Exclusive mandate means that your agent will work exclusively for you. At Harcourts Dolphin Coast, we proudly offer a written Promise (Undertaking) and marketing plan to work for and with our sellers giving them every opportunity to present their home to the widest buying audience available. THE OUTSIDE: The more fierce the competition, the better your house must look. The first thing people see is the outside: it’s called “curb appeal”. So stand on your curb and see if your house has appeal relative to others in your neighbourhood. Clearing clutter, cleaning up, trimming bushes, stashing junk, and generally doing what you can with what’s “Free”. Look at the prettiest yards in your neighbourhood to compare your property to. Ask your friends and your agent for their opinions. Pay special attention to the pavement and front entrance. Paint your front door; put some flowers on the porch, etc. In short, your

Mom wasn’t kidding when she talked about first impressions. THE INSIDE: There’s a delicate line you walk when you sell a house. You want it to look like home, but not your home. Remove absolutely everything that’s not necessary. Remove family pictures from the wall and everywhere else. The goal is for potential buyers to see their own family there, not yours. Rent a storage room and put every single thing you possibly can in it, other than just enough nice furnishings to make your house look inviting. Paint is a good idea, but don’t get creative: off-white is best. Replace flooring if it’s got either style or wear issues, and make sure everything in the house works and looks as it should — no leaky taps, no cracks — and as with the outside, the trick is to balance cost and benefit. Whoever buys your home will have it inspected, and whatever’s not working is going to be discovered and you’ll be asked to pay for it. Save yourself the headache and pay for it now. This is about selling fast, not painlessly. If you follow this advice, your house will definitely sell faster and for more money. FINANCIAL INCENTIVES: If you’ve followed all the advice above, you shouldn’t need to offer extra incentives to sell your house. However some incentives such as appliances or garden furniture, for example, will almost certainly result in more interest. So it’s something to consider. But incentives are” icing”, focus on the “cake”, by having the nicest looking lowest priced house in your neighbourhood. Finally, smart investors know that the current property market offers excellent opportunities. Hopefully the Government will soon clarify their plans on expropriation while taking into consideration the consequences of a policy that can have a ripple effect throughout the entire economy. THE BOTTOM LINE: At Harcourts Dolphin Coast we believe that property ownership is part of the cultural, social and economic future of South Africa. We are here to serve all the people of our nation with selling, buying or renting of property. Call us today! C

TO FLY OR SWIM TRAVEL WITH STEVE HONEYSETT

I

do not consider myself a frequent flier but the opportunity arose to travel to Cyprus recently and I could not believe how travel has changed.

I was fortunate to fly Qatar airlines on one of their modern planes and was impressed with how far airline travel had come firstly with the entertainment that you now get with every seat having its own screen and a variety of entertainment packages that could keep one busy for hours which no doubt is the object of flight as we know it today. I can’t help but to cast my mind back to the 1970’s when I was child flying SAA over to the United Kingdom to visit my grandparents on a flight that had no entertainment. Back then many African countries would not allow our planes air space due to the apartheid regime we were living under so SAA always flew the longest routes. One such trip I recall landing on an island off West Africa where the plane was directed to a screened off area of the Airport and under heavy guard. As a child I recall the brown hessian sack screen and the armed soldiers around the plane not allowing us to exit the plane - it was quite intimidating. A quick refuel and we were escorted to the runway to continue the journey. On another occasion we landed in Kenya under full military guard and that time there were tanks parked around the plane.

To entertain ourselves we took our small brown cardboard school cases full of toy cars (Superfast cars) and we were allowed to play with them on the plane floor. I think my mother read her book but there was no other entertainment to help take your mind off the boredom of the journey. Customs and passport control were always long and tedious and my mother still recalls how stressful it was trying to keep my brother and me under control and to get through the check point. Well, that has all changed with progress in the aviation industry and I was engrossed for hours with the vast array of entertainment that was available at the touch of a button. On an international flight you are one of a vast number of people from all walks of life so catering for different preferences is probably difficult, but I was I even able to watch a surfing documentary on the flight. They have such a vast array of movies, series, sports, comedy and music to keep one busy for the entire trip. What impressed me the most was how you can monitor your flight progress on the screen to see were you are - a marvel I suppose of satellite navigation. I was also thrilled to see how efficient airport customs and passport control has become in some countries. You walk up to a computerised stand and place your passport on a scanner which scans it. Then there is a camera that photographs you and gives you a print out which you hand to an official at the passport counter. And that’s it - you are done and through.

Wow - no queues and a thousand questions! Then there are today’s modern airports that never stop moving people, planes and cargo 24 hours a day. I was blown away with the size of the operation and how they get everything where it is supposed to go. So, yes, a lot has changed and I must say that it is a lot less stressful to travel these days. My grandparents did not trust airplanes, preferring to sail on a ship when they came out to visit. I think they must have had a lot of leave as the ship took three weeks to sail from South Hampton in the UK to Durban. Then they stayed for three weeks and sailed back again. When I asked my grandfather why he preferred sailing, he used to tell me that if the ship were to sink, you could at least swim. But if you were in a plane and it fell out of the sky, you weren’t given wings to help you fly…and that’s why they sailed.

Seaweed Steve, AKA Steve Honeysett presents the Daily Surf Report on 88.0FM

ASHTON COLLEGE - EIGHT YEARS OF PHENOMENAL GROWTH

T

HE past eight years have seen enormous growth at Ashton College Ballito.

It started in 2010 with the initial upgrades to the campus in which the park home structures were removed and the Ashtonian Sports Café was constructed. The swimming pool area was also extensively revamped. In 2011 the Ashlings Early Learning Centre was opened to accommodate three grade R classes and subsequently grew to accommodate two turtle classes, three grade 000’s three grade 00’s and four grade R’s. In 2012 the Science and Information Technology Centre was constructed as well as a dedicated Art room. Construction of the Grace Hall was started in 2013 and in the following year it was officially opened. Five full scale musical productions have so far been featured in this facility. The Grace Autism Wing at Ashton was built and quickly became known as one of the finest facilities of its kind in the country. The successes achieved here have been truly encouraging. In 2016 the need for more classrooms for the senior college as well as the need for additional sporting facilities was addressed

with thirteen new classrooms, two science laboratories, a biology lab, a second IT Centre and an EDG classroom being built. More land was acquired on the opposite side of the M4 for the development of the new sports campus that includes two full size rugby fields and a cricket oval as well as an FIH approved Rhino Turf hockey field. In 2017 saw four new grade 3 classrooms built to replace the original wooden structures. In 2018 work is currently in progress on a new 2000 seater multi-purpose hall incorporating an international size indoor hockey arena as well as a state of the art sound system, 11x5 m LED screen. Adjoining it will be a 120 seater tiered theatre. Construction has now also begun on a Consumer Studies Centre and Media Centre for the senior college making Ashton the first school on the North Coast to offer this subject. From 437 students in 2010, Ashton currently has an enrolment of 1346 students and the future looks very bright indeed.

Simbithi’s own Executive Chef Daryn Bowers battled ex-Hartford House Chef Constantijn Hahndiek in an epic three-course duel. Guests were treated to a gastronomic adventure; blindly tasting an amuse bouche, main and dessert. Though the two Chefs were neck-and-neck until the end, Chef Constantijn emerged victorious. Sublime entertainment by Danny Fisher rounded out an excellent evening.

WOW CROWD AT OPEN MIC EVENING

T

he Open Mic evening at the Ballito Lifestyle Market recently was an outstanding success for all who watched and participated.

Asisipho Mnyaka, Ms Sindi Mavimbela and Mandy Mdlongwa

This is a monthly event hosted by the Radio Life & Style 88FM team and there was a strong presence from Crawford College North Coast among the performers. The students were phenomenal and did the school so proud, in fact, they have been asked to come back again. Jenna-Leigh Fourie, Asisipho Mnyaka, Yash Parumaul, Emma Luyt, Rachel Graham and Mandy Mdlongwa took the stage and wowed the crowd. Choir Mistress and Vocal Coach, Ms Sindi Mavimbela continued to highlight the talent at Crawford College North Coast when she performed a traditional number, “Uhuru” with Asisipho Mnyaka and Mandy Mdlongwa. Dave Charles commented that he would like to collaborate with them as they were reminiscent of his time working with the “Soul Sisters”.

COOKIN “REPUBLIC OF BRAAI” A BRAAI REVOLUTION Cookin believes it’s your democratic right to master the flames and braai with the best braai tools – be a braai master! “The Democratic Republic of Braai is wherever you gather around fires with friends and family for a celebration of the nation. Where conversations are had and stories are shared” - Jan Braai, SA braai icon Humans only evolved because they discovered the fire, added meat and created the braai. The brain needs protein contained in meat in order to develop. Meat should not be eaten raw but at least rare

C

elebrating cultural diversity is an integral part of Heritage Day. Let’s braai the Brazilian way! You are being invited to an authentic churrasco, which is the way of roasting meat in Brazil, it is a synonym for tradition, celebration and joy. Brazilians are as passionate about Churrasco as South Africans are about braai and meat! Following the Churrasco tradition since 1911, the picanha cut (steak rump cut) is threaded onto the skewer, rubbed only with coarse salt and slow grilled over the coals. The fat from the meat provides a basting, intensifies the flavor and tenderness of the meat, there is no secret. Tramontina’s range of products in excellent steel, polywood and with state of the art technology - skewers, grills and knives, will turn your braai into a real Brazilian churrasco and ensures that you will put on a good show - whether you braai your steak, lamb chops, boerewors or chicken tikka masala.

F

or the ultimate seafood beach braai, use Staub to create an array of seafood dishes – mussels, crayfish, chowders and paella. Staub will elegantly grace your braai and create the perfect mielie pap tert, malva pudding, ujeqe (steamed bread), umngqusho (samp and beans) - one of Nelson Mandelas’ favorites. Staub is the brand choice amongst many of the World’s renowned chefs including the late Paul Bocuse. Originating from Alsace in France since 1974, Staub specialises in cast iron cookware, suited for home cooks and professionals alike, perfectly combining traditional craftsmanship with state-of-theart technology. The Aroma Rain nodules in the lid ensures a moisture balance and intensifies food with wonderful flavour, succulence and tenderness.

Cookin and Love Laugh collaborated to transform the Lifestyle Centre into a fairy tale wedding scene, share their services they have to offer the wedding industry, alongside the best of the bridal industry from KZN. Exclusive VIPs from wedding venues, photographers, vloggers, bloggers, dress makers and more mingled amongst a spectacular scene set and dressed by Extreme Events. Love Laugh’s breath taking floral canopy and arrangements adorned the harvest table spread of tantalising food treats made with love by The Delish Sisters, and a sweet, decadent offering and cake display by

Chateau Gateaux. Alchemy served up classy custom gin cocktails and a curated wine tasting with The Other Room and Hermanuspietersfontein. We said ‘yes to the dress’ with whimsical bridal gowns by Ivory Isle, as we sipped on bubbles from Stellenrust. Who could forget the exclusive one night VIP shopping experience with Cookin and Love Laugh, as well as Cookin’s registry services. Mike Charles our MC kept us on our toes, whilst the vibe was set by Jarryd Sunkel (KZN Wedding DJ). We left with new friends, new partnerships and a photo strip to remember the night.

CONSUMER AFFAIRS GLENDA THOMPSON

C

ONSUMERS are in for a huge treat in the next few years with appliances coming onto the market that think for them. CEO of Hirsch’s, Allan Hirsch recently attended IFA, an annual event held in Europe (this year it was in Berlin) that showcases the latest products and innovations in global consumer technology. He said that many of these appliances would be in the market in SA next year.

What impressed Allan most were the carbon products from the Grundig stable. “These were incredible. Fridges and other appliances, large and small, made from carbon, the same material that super yachts etc. are made from. Light weight, incredibly durable and very attractive, with a long term guarantee. Something else I loved were juice blenders that suck all the oxygen out of food before it blends the item. The food doesn’t go brown and it stays fresh and clear the whole day. Steam cooking is also very popular in Europe, and soon most Defy products will come with steamers. Without a doubt the most talked about topic at the show was Artificial Intelligence – “it will bring each aspect of our lives into a seamless connected experience.” These were the words from LG’s Electronics Chief Executive Officer Jo Seong-jin at the opening of the show. Continued Jo Seong-jin “Your home will know what kind of day you’ve had in the office and will roll out the welcome

mat by preparing the perfect environment for when you walk in the door.” Also in abundance at the show apparently, were robots. Hoover and Samsung had new stick-vacuums on display with claims of superior suction and battery life. Robot vacs were plentiful, including the 3D Sensor model with Electrolux that, as the name suggests, senses in 3D. A fun display from LG was its new robot mower, and with the amount of lawns that we have in South Africa, it will be interesting to see how these machines go down here. On the health front, examples of products that are designed to improve our health included the Philips SmartSleep headbands and apps designed for the almost 40% of us who don’t get the recommended seven to nine hours sleep. Smart sleeve boosts slowwave activity to enhance the quality of deep sleep. Philips are also making pasta makers that put a measure of flower in and it will tell you how much liquid you need to make the perfect pasta – can also be made with broccoli or beetroot Clothes and dishwashers are now using smart technology to make sure that you never run out of detergent. Combined with auto-dosing capabilities, companies – including Miele, Bosch and Siemens have Amazon Dash support

CURTAINS, BEDDING & CUSHIONS FREE Sewing

which automatically re-orders detergent when stocks are running low. Topping my personal list of amazing appliances that are about to be launched are washing machines that fold your laundry! These will be launched by Panasonic in 2019. I also love the idea of the Siemens odour removal washing machine. If you have worn a jacket for a few days and it’s beginning to smell of stale smoke, just toss it into the machine, and without running a wash cycle it will eliminate the odour through a senso fresh function. Finally, here is something that every executive would love – the PA in your ear. If you want to send and sms or whatsapp without using your phone, or you want the weather forecast without referring to the phone, Sony have developed the “Xperia Ear” – a small Bluetooth earphone that can tell your smartphone to send texts or recite information! So there we have it folks. Love it or hate it, Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. In a few years’ time we will hardly remember what life was like without it!! Drop me a line on gjthomo@gmail. com if you have any consumer related enquiries.

GOLDRUSH RED CARPET RELAUNCH

G

OLDRUSH BINGO AND ENTERTAINMENT opened a year ago at the Junction Mall in Ballito and proved to be a very popular concept. It offers a restaurant and bar that stays open till late and it offers those that love gaming the opportunity to play to their hearts content.

The General Manager, Cindy Gobey, and her team is proud of what they have achieved and to celebrate, they decided on a red carpet relaunch with live entertainment by popular singer, Karen Feeke and a R10 000 grand prize for one lucky patron. This was a way to thank their patrons for the ongoing support and the gesture was well received. The evening was a massive success with a capacity crowd in attendance. Gold Rush Bingo and Entertainment looks set to remain a star attraction on the North Coast entertainment scene, having created that winning formula that really appeals to those who love to gamble responsibly.

LAATZ ELECTRICAL – MAKING A DIFFERENCE

D

OLPHIN COAST residents driving along the M4 freeway near Westbrook may have noticed that the area seems a lot cleaner than usual. This is thanks to Siyabonga Dladla, who tirelessly cleans the area on most days of the week.

Siyabonga is a homeless man that lives in the coastal area along the road. He used to collect cans and bottles to recycle and make some money to survive, until he recently met Grant and Kathrine Laatz (owners of local business Laatz Electrical) who approached him and offered him a job to keep the road clean and litter-free. Siyabonga was ecstatic and jumped at the employment opportunity. Every morning Grant drops off rubbish bags for the day and Siyabonga goes about his

business of picking up litter and filling those bags for collection in the afternoon- with a smile and enthusiasm! This initiative by Laatz Electrical comes after the team did a road clean up for Mandela Day in the same vicinity and were astounded by the amount of litter strewn along the road. They also felt they needed to do something more to make a difference in the community other than just a mere sixty minutes once a year, so the idea to create employment while helping the environment was born. Should you see Siyabonga while driving along the route, please show your support with a hoot and a wave.

NOKUKHANYA LUTHULI HOUSE – BALLITO’S REFURBISHED CIVIC CENTRE PENNY FOURIE

T

HE recently refurbished Ballito Civic Center in Leonora Drive is the first public building in the region to be named in honour of a woman.

The newly renamed Nokukhanya Luthuli House was officially opened KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu, deputy mayor Dolly Govendor, officials from the KwaDukuza Municipality, representatives from the Luthuli Museum Council and members of the Luthuli family. Wife of the late ANC president Chief Albert Luthuli, the first African to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for advocating non-violent resistance to racial discrimination, Nokukhanya Luthuli’s life was dedicated to the service of others. Paying tribute to his late grandmother’s legacy, Mthunzi Luthuli recalls: “She was indeed more than just our grandmother but our mother too as she raised us grandchildren. I believe one of the greatest gifts my grandmother gave us was instilling on us a strong work ethic from an early age. The lessons in diligence and her demand for excellence have been invaluable to me as a professional today,” Luthuli said. Born in 1904, Nokukhanya began her schooling at the Ohlange Institute in Inanda in 1913. She went on to do a two-year teachers training course at Adams College, Amanzimtoti, where she later studied further for her higher teacher’s diploma. Nokukhanye gave up her teaching career after her marriage to Albert Luthuli to help look after his ailing mother. An accomplished agriculturist

who farmed sugar cane, she grew her own produce that supplemented the family’s income and fed the impoverished families in the community. The mother of seven also set up a post office at her home in Groutville for the local residents. She rallied the women of Groutville and led a movement for the establishment of a local clinic. Her dedication to gender equality resulted in her leading a delegation of woman to the Zulu King to complain about the extension of passes to women. She was a founding member of the Groutville branch of ‘Daughters of Africa’, which was the forerunner

to the ANC Women’s League. There was a bottomless reservoir of anecdotes about Nokukhanya’s work ethic, her selfless contributions to her family and community, her humility and her unwavering value system. KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu said the municipality was honoured to celebrate the life of this influential woman and stalwart of the democratic struggle. “I really feel we need these historic, strong women who changed the country to be recalled to current memory, so that we can inspire the young women and girls growing up now, reinforce on them that they can have a big impact on our country,”Mthembu said. Nokukhanya passed away in 1996 at the age of 92. Speaking at her funeral, the late President Nelson Mandela paid tribute to her devoted spirit and her contribution to South Africa’s freedom and justice. In a moving speech Mandela described her as an activist and a leader who had dedicated her life to the betterment of others. Nokukhanya was laid to rest at the Congregational Church in Groutville beside her late husband, Chief Albert Luthuli.
