Lucy goes swimming with Aussie Dolphins

Local swimmer attends national championships

While many of the Mount Gambier Swim Club swimmers were eagerly watching their swimming idols compete last week at the Australian Swimming Championships on livestream TV, one local swimmer was fortunate enough to be invited to attend.

Lucy Dening participated at the recent Bio Island JX Clinic held earlier this month at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre which was attended by members of the Australian Dolphins Swim Team and coaching staff. This included former Olympian and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and coach Janelle (nee Elford) Pallister and Olympic representative in Tokyo 2020 Jenna Strauch.

Lucy was invited to attend due to earning Gold JX Achievement for 2021-2022 swimming season. The Bio Island JX program, for swimmers aged 9-13 years),recognises the performances of competitive swimmers based upon their times they swim at recognised swim meets over the season. The awards range from Blue to Bronze, Silver and Gold standards. As a JX Gold swimmer Lucy, along with other participants, was coached for a 90 minute session working on diving, turns, finishes and stroke technique as well as a brief Q&A session. Lucy explained that she learnt a new routine for turns to save time in the pool as well as some drills to help improve stroke rate.

The experience also included with complimentary tickets for the final night of the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships. “I really enjoyed seeing the world record too,” Lucy said, describing Ariarne Titmus in her record-breaking 400m freestyle swim.

Pioneers men & women cruise to comfortable home court victories

The OneFortyOne Mount Gambier Pioneers Women remain atop the South conference standings in NBL1 after producing a dominant performance to easily account for the Melbourne Tigers at the weekend.

After the tension of the previous weekend’s buzzer beating overtime win, the girls set up this 31 point victory with a first half that never gave the Tigers a look in, taking a 30 point lead into the main break.

The home side only one the second half by one point but the damage had been done. In a pleasing sign for coach Matt Sutton, it was an even team performance with Hannah Young leading all scorers with 24 points with solid support from Shakera Reilly (15); Cassandra Brown (11) and Sherrie Calleia (10).

Young, Reilly and Calleia were all hot from beyond the arc with Brown, Young and Reilly also getting the job done on the boards, combining for 24 of the Pioneers. 43 rebounds.

For the loyal Pioneers fans who headed to the Icehouse, they not only got to see their team win easily but also saw a potential future star of Australian basketball Tess Heal, the niece of Aussie basketball great Shane Heal, who put up 25 of the Tigers’ 43 points in basically a lone hand.

The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers Men also had a comprehensive victory and they also set up their 88-56 victory with a dominant first half. It was a 41-19 halftime scoreline in what was a even performance for the top ranked men’s side, with Nick Marshall (17); Michael Harris (16); Tom Kubank (16); Kane de Wit (11); Jordan Rawls 910) and Clevon Brown (10) all sharing the ball.

This weekend brings the real challenge as the Pioneers hit the road to take on second placed Frankston in a true test of where their 2022 season currently sits.
