Mount Gambier Table Tennis Autumn season continue to march on

Mount Gambier Table Tennis Club Autumn Season week 4 was once again impacted by player availability this week, nevertheless organisers and competitors rolled on to ensure all matches were completed and the usual quality was on display.

The A Grade saw Scott Davies’ Hawks take on Ben Newman’s Titans in the opener. Davies gave his team the perfect start, brushing aside Titans player Robin Pellen with relative comfort. Pellen kept pace early but ultimately cracked under the relentless pressure from Davies, the Hawks player forcing the error from his opponent to take the first game. The second stanza mirrored the first, the two adversaries going toe-to-toe, evenly matched with skill and experienced. As he did in the first game, Davies turned the screws late in the game, pulling away to claim a 2-0 lead. Pellen refused to be denied and appeared to be mounting an inspirational comeback, racing to an early lead in the third. Davies however regained his composure and concentration, a perfect combination power and precise placement enabling him to overhaul the deficit and run away with a comfortable victory. This first rubber set the tone for most of the match, a late run of victories to Davies, Ward Freeman and Justin Hutchesson at the tail-end of the night clinching a 7-4 victory for the Hawks. The second A-Grade battle was reduced to a 2-on-2 contest, Lions’ Sirinat Sweet and Bill-John Watson taking on the Loopers’ Felix Owusu and Sanith Ghetia. Lions dominated the lopsided contest from the outset, Sweet setting the tone with a ferocious dismantling of Owusu in the opening rubber. The trend continued throughout the night, Ghetia finally salvaging a victory for the Loopers in the final rubber for a 4-1 result. Watson was the standout, winning both of his singles rubbers.

The first B Grade match produced a much tighter result, nothing separating the Falcons and the Giants for most of the evening. Falcons’ Rayelene Hutchesson and Giants’ Ethan Ransom opened proceedings, Hutchesson drawing first blood by claiming the first game. Ransom found his groove, taking the next two games and looking like overrunning his more experienced opponent. Hutchesson clawed her way back in the fourth however, claiming it 12 points to 10 to send the rubber to a deciding game. After cautiously feeling each other out early in the last game, Ransom was the first to show signs of impatience, Hutchesson remaining steady and composed. A handful of unforced errors by Ransom at crucial moments was enough to gift Hutchesson the victory, setting Falcons up with the ideal start. Other highlights of the match included Giants player Luke Bremner’s tense 5-gamer against Falcons’ Maddie McGregor. The overall contest remained in the balance until the final showdown between Hutchesson and Bremner to end the night. In a first game that lasted longer than most entire rubbers, Bremner triumphed 13-11 to the rapturous cheers of teammates who had all become mesmerised by what they were witnessing. Hutchesson fought back bravely to claim the second game, Bremner then regained the ascendency with victory in the third. Sensing the urgency, Hutchesson lifted the tempo in the fourth, challenging Bremner’s resolve. The more experienced Falcon’s player eased past her opponent to claim the fourth, setting up a battle royale in the decider. After starting strongly, Bremner appeared to tense up as he held a commanding lead and only needed a few points to close out the win. Hutchesson remained focussed and determined however, consistently forcing her opponent to play the extra shot and waiting patiently for the errors to come. The errors came, Bremner’s frustration showing as his wily adversary drew level and gained the upper hand. Bremner was unable to fight back, Hutchesson claiming the win and a 6-5 result for the Falcons.

C Grade’s first match had Jacob Ireland leading his pack of Werewolves into battle against Lorraine Halleday’s Night Riders. Ireland kickstarted proceedings with a dominant win over Night Riders’ young star in Nat HarrisJones. Halleday and Andrew Schubert steadied the ship for Night Riders however, grinding out 5-game victories in their respective opening singles rubbers. The overall lead seesawed throughout the night, the overall outcome not decided until the final encounter between Ireland and Helleday. Ireland raced out of the blocks, claiming the first bracket easily, before Halleday bounced back to claim the second. The younger Ireland flexed his muscles after that however, racing to an early lead in the third and never looking back, cruising to victory to give Werewolves the 6-5 win. The final C-Grade contest of the night saw the depleted Kings and Knights also play out a 2-on-2 match. Knights player Angus Billing appeared to have finally found some longoverdue form, keeping his singles sheet clean on the night. Not to be outdone by her teammate, Hailee Barnes also remained undefeated. Barnes and Billing also combined to claim the doubles rubber against the Kings team of Anneliese Holtz and Heather McGregor to give the Knights a 5-0 whitewash.
