The fibre of farming meets the fibre of football at Sheepvention 2015 This year Sheepvention will celebrate a long held regional past time: footy! Geelong Football Club Player, Tom Hawkins will open Sheepvention on Monday, August 3. President of Sheepvention, Nick Sutherland, said organisers were delighted to announce that Tom Hawkins would open Sheepvention this year. “Our district has a huge Geelong Football Club fan base and we are sure he will be very popular,” he said. Tom (pictured right) is an ambassador for wool for Australian Wool Innovation. From a wool and cropping property in Finley, NSW Tom joined the Fibre of Football campaign to promote the importance of farming and wool growing in the Australian Community. The Fibre of Football campaign was started by Hamilton local, Marius Cumming (Marketing Manager for AWI) and Stephen Feign from AWI. It celebrates the strong relationship farming has with the AFL. Football will also feature as part of Sheepvention’s promotion for kindergarten and primary school children. George The Farmer is a children’s book character who will be attending Sheepvention and delighting kids with his educational songs about farming. Originating from Penola, George and his family are typical of most farming families…and of course, George plays footy! Sheepvention will include a George the Farmer Trail where participants will undertake a range of activities including sowing some wheat seeds, getting a tractor license and having a go at footy. AFL

Western District will be at Sheepvention with their new football field jumping castle and activity centre. Perhaps kids may even find Tom Hawkins having kick in this area! Children can get involved with the George The Farmer promotion with activities through their school, kindergarten, day-care or the Hamilton Library. George hopes to be travelling to Dunkeld and Coleraine on the Tuesday 4 August to see some youngsters that were not able to make the trip to Sheepvention. Both George and Tom Hawkins will be at Sheepvention on Monday 3 August so they hope to see lots of fans there. Sheepvention will be held at the Hamilton Showgrounds. Magical, mystical, enchanting: Wool – Sheepvention Fashion Parade 2015 The Australasian Young Designer Wool Awards, Fashion Parade and Presentations will take place on Sunday, August. 2 The amazing designs will be showcased in a magical evening which will feature a grand illusionist. Patrons will enjoy a cocktail style event from 5:15pm followed by the parade and performances. “This year we are changing the ACE Radio Discover Wool Fashion Parades to an exciting new format. The Sunday night launch will be an exclusive performance which won’t be repeated during Sheepvention.” said Sheepvention Events Manager, Peta Anderson. “…people will only have ONE chance to see the young designer garments and this quality performance.” Organisers are anticipating a high level of entries across all categories from fantasy to race wear. Previous parades have impressed with avant-garde and fresh new looks. Following on from this magical Sunday night, Sheepvention ACE Radio Discover Wool Fashion Parades will be a high impact fashion extravaganza, showcasing a selection of top Australian designers. This year will also parade some garments which will be on sale at Sheepvention such as Wendy Voon and The Ark’s Nikel and Sole. Tuesday afternoon will be an exclusive High Tea event where patrons will sit around the runway enjoying Fiona Wall High Tea canapés and sweets. This will be an intimate afternoon with designs from Country Road, Alex Perry, MJ Bale, Sportscraft, Sass and Bide, and more. Tickets will be available from July 13 at ACE Radio in Brown Street or the Hamilton Showgrounds Office and a limited number will be available online. Tickets for Sunday evening are $25. LOCAL Conference set to unveil some innovative case studies After decades of trying to clothe the world, Richard Hawker’s sheep farm at Apsley in western Victoria is changing direction and trying to feed it. The farm has been in the Hawker family since 1953 but changing markets have led to a new approach. “I think the outlook is better for lamb than it is for wool,” Mr Hawker said. “We’re going to try to feed the world rather than clothe the world.” The change in direction has meant changes in the farming system which will be outlined when Mr Hawker hosts a Grassland Society of Southern Australia farm tour on July 22. The society’s annual conference in Naracoorte on July 22-23 will have a strong focus on red meat and wool and show that Australia’s future lies in farming, not necessarily mining. Mr Hawker said the farm had dabbled in meat in the past but decided to concentrate on it after battling continued low wool prices. “There’ve been peaks but the peaks are pretty short lived in the wool market,” Mr Hawker said. “Lamb prices are very strong at the moment; we sold lambs the other day for $6.10 and they came back over $150.” The 2600 hectare Apsley farm runs mainly Merino ewes joined to terminals or maternal meat sheep sires. This year they joined about 14,500 ewes, a record number. “We’ve always bred our own replacements using merino rams but now we’ll breed our replacements using composite sires and have a selfreplacing maternal meat sheep flock,”

Mr Hawker said. “This has been the first year ever we haven’t put a merino ram out.” Although Mr Hawker says the farm is on “good grazing country” he has needed to make pasture changes to get the most out of the land. The Grassland Society tour will see how the farm’s focus on brassica as a summer crop is paying dividends. Brassica was introduced about five years ago to clean up ryegrass after winter cropping and before sowing perennial phalaris pastures. “It was an opportunity to clean up the ryegrass as well as filling a good feed gap with our lambs,” he said. “Brassica gives us a bit of green feed over summer that we wouldn’t otherwise have.” The farm gets wet over winter meaning Lucerne struggles because of water logging. Brassica avoids this problem as it is sown in spring. The brassica had been a good fit for the farm and its yields are improving. How well the crop goes is very season dependent. “We’ve got a bit better at it but it still depends on the season,” Mr Hawker said. “It only needs one good summer rain and you get a couple of months of growth off it.” The summer crops set up the paddocks for perennial pastures. “We’ve always done a lot of work on improving pastures. We try to get perennial pastures in that are going to last for 10-15 years. Preparation is the most important thing and the brassica crops set it up beautifully,” Mr Hawker said. “You can come in and apply lime and work up the paddocks

and get them really level before you put your pasture in. It’s been good for us; you can control ryegrass easily and help paddock preparation. It also adds value in the grazing as well. If you weren’t putting lambs on it you’d be grain feeding which is costly as well.” In the past the farm has aimed to grow as much home-grown feed as possible. This is the first year it hasn’t grown cereal crops. “We’ll buy grain in this year,” Mr Hawker said. “The winter cereal crops struggle in our country because of the waterlogging issue. That’s why we’re trying to push the

grazing a bit harder and outsource the grain. For the yields we’ve been getting I think we’re better off getting someone else to grow it and we’ll just run sheep on the country.” Delegates at the Grassland Society of Southern Australia conference will also see the silage and intensive grazing management for sheep and beef at Todd Woodard’s farm at Wrattonbully South Australia and the improved pasture and grazing management on Andrew Cavill’s dairy farm at Bool Lagoon. The Grassland Society of Southern Australia’s annual conference will follow themes of soils,

pastures, livestock, farm business and people, and marketing. The complete program is available on the Grassland Society website at www. grasslands.org.au. To RSVP contact: Grassland Society of Southern Australia on 1300 137 550 or email office@grasslands. org.au.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Why life is complicated... by Robbie Tansel I don’t know about you, but life just seems really complicated to me. I’ve been thinking about it and I think it’s all our own fault. We’ve complicated our own lives and made things difficult for ourselves. I’ve come to the conclusion that the root of all our problems is that there is simply too much choice. There is so much choice available in every aspect of our life that we spend all of our time choosing. Let me explain. If you want to go see a movie, even in a little town like Mount Gambier with our three screens, there are normally about eight movies to choose between with each of the movies showing at a variety of times during the day. What movie will you go to and which of the session times suits best? Which of the fifty different snack options will you purchase before entering? Back in the

day there was one movie on at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, it showed on one occasion and it only happened every few weeks. And don’t you dare try to take food in! Likewise, when you wanted to watch television you would turn your television on and decide if you wanted to watch Channel 8, or the ABC. Now there are 15 channels, not including if you also have Foxtel with another 50. Mind you, I generally don’t have much difficulty with the choice between the various channels. I generally turn on the television, scan through all the channels, recognise there’s nothing worth watching and turn the television off. I preferred back in the day where there was only one channel so they only put good programs on. The A-Team. Hardcastle and McCormick. Knight Rider. Magnum P.I. You knew you were never going to be let down. I’m convinced you only need two channels. Mens and Womens, just like toilets. Every aspect of our lives has infinitely more choices. Back in the day, if you went to the pub there were three different beers available and that was about it. What else would you need? Now there are eighty seven different beers that you can choose between based on what country interests you today, dozens of wine varieties, sixty five different mixed spirit beverages and hundreds

of other cocktails, shots and the like. It’s too much. I just want to drown my misery and self loathing. Consider all the choice you have when buying clothes or shoes. Every possible colour, style, fit, and preference is catered to. When you buy new sneakers do you want, Air, Max Air, Gel, Bounce, Cushion, Podulon, Lunarlon? I want to buy a pair of shoes, not a rocket. I want to buy them some time today. I want them to fit and be comfortable. I feel sorry for children in school today. When I was at school, you had a blue pen, a red pen, a lead pencil and 10 coloured pencils. There were 10 coloured pencils because there were only ten colours at the time. Blue, red, green, yellow, orange, purple, black, brown,

pink, and light blue. There was no almond. There was no apricot. There was no avocado. Imagine how long it will take a child to finish a colouring in book as they choose between the seven hundred coloured pencils in their pencil suitcase. There are too many sports to choose from. There are too many apps available for my iPhone. There are too many different types of music. There are too many different things you can customise when you build your house. Window dressings. Brick colour. Flooring. Paint colours. We don’t need all these choices. We don’t even really know what we want. The original McDonalds menu included only about six items. Did you want a hamburger or a cheese burger? Fries or no fries? What were

you going to drink with it? It now takes half an hour to go through the menu and with this new build a burger thing, fast food is not so fast anymore. All right, that choice isn’t so bad. I think I might nip out and grab myself something quickly now. I just think we’re making everything a little more complicated than it needs to be. I’d like my life a little simpler. Decide what is good and get rid of all the other unnecessary choices. LOCAL Radio program needs new on air talent A community radio program to promote healthier lifestyle choices around Portland has faltered due to a lack of support. The SEA Change radio program on 3RPC community radio was introduced in September last year but went off air during June. It is hoped fresh community support will see the program revived. The program was part of the Portland SEA Change (Sustainable Eating and Activity Change) initiative to bring together the community to find the best ways to change the eating and exercise habits of local people. Health promotions officer at Portland District Health, Lindy Stuchbery, had initially run the radio show with a small team of supporters but the helpers were unable to continue. Ms Stuchbery now hopes to recruit a new team to revive the show and is looking for local people to tell their stories. “To get going again, I’d like the help of a small team of 2-3 people willing to help plan the program, find stories and interviewees in the community and perhaps co-host or co-present,” Ms Stuchbery said. The program heard conversations with more than 40 guest speakers talking about what they love about living in Portland and how they keep active and eat healthy food. Guests included café owners, sporting clubs, schools, service clubs, parents, grandparents, health professionals and community groups. Many of the guest speakers have continued to make significant changes in their communities, like creating a healthy cooking program based at Portland Neighbourhood House. This program was recently taken to Portland South Primary School, where parents were invited to learn how to create healthier lunchboxes for their children. “The program has provided another opportunity for people to share what’s been happening and what’s coming up around

Cooking up a storm

healthy lifestyle, in Portland,” Ms Stuchbery said. However, she said she was unable to continue the show on her own. “We need different ideas and different perspectives to keep it interesting,” she said. Ms Stuchbery said she hoped to attract new guest speakers and invite everyday people to be interviewed about what they eat and what they do or would like to do for physical activity. “They might accept a small change that is a healthy choice and come back later to tell us how they went about making the change and if it’s working for them,” she said. Ms Stuchbery said the radio show was part of an overall campaign to create healthier lifestyles in Portland. She added that being involved in community radio has many benefits. “It’s great fun and a chance to have input into saying what Portland needs and what opportunities Portland has to offer. People talking about changes they’ve made can inspire others to do the same.” Anyone interested in being involving in planning the program or talking about the eating and fitness habits can contact Ms Stuchbery on (03)5522 1197 or via email at lindy.stuchbery.pdh@swarh. vic.gov.au

A new cooking program at STAY Residential Services in Hamilton will create opportunities for people with disabilities to find jobs in the hospitality field and improve their diets. The 12-week program will help 12 people with a disability to learn about nutrition, how to prepare easy and health meals, and achieve their food handlers’ certificate. Hamilton chef Tony McGillivray will provide STAY clients with nutritional information and teach them to prepare quick and easy healthy meals and snacks. The program has been funded by the WDEA Charitable Trust. Participants will include clients who live in permanent supported accommodation, or independently as well as respite clients who live at home with their carers. STAY CEO Maree Sandford said the program would prepare clients for work in the hospitality industry and develop nutritional knowledge and food preparation skills. “It will also create social inclusion,” Ms Sandford said. “An experience such as cooking builds friendships and encourages teamwork and cooperation.” Ms Sandford said the project would have a lasting impact for clients. “Many of our clients have limited experience in food preparation and find the idea of cooking overwhelming. Not only will this project give them the required skill base to enable them to cook for themselves, it will also empower them to make healthier lifestyle choices.” An Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Survey shows people with a disability are more likely to be overweight or obese than people without a disability across all age groups. “It’s vital that our clients have easy access to the tools and information required to make informed lifestyle choices so they can take charge of their health and lead full and active lives,” Ms Sandford said. “We are very pleased that the WDEA Charitable Trust has recognised the value of this program and we appreciate the support they have given,” she added. At the end of the program a final luncheon will be held where STAY clients will display the skills they have learnt. Clients will also be encouraged to share their cooking skills with their housemates in supported accommodation. STAY provides services for people with disabilities and supports 16 people with a disability who live in STAY managed residential homes, and provides respite for 47 people and supports other people with disabilities in the community. People interested in finding out more about the WDEA Charitable Trust can contact Kim Williams in Warrnambool on (03)5561 2579, or visit the website www.wdea.org.au.

LOCAL Sponsors locked in as prominent cycling tour event start on the horizon Lakes Oil, Australia’s oldest existing oil and gas exploration company, will link with the leading Australasian construction outfit, Fulton Hogan, as joint major sponsor of the 2015 Tour of the Great South Coast road cycling classic. The five-day tour, to be raced from August 12 – 16, is expected to attract about 150 professional cyclists from all Australian states and New Zealand. First held in 2012, the 565-kilometre event has rapidly developed into one of the top-rated tours on Cycling Australia’s Subaru National Road Series calendar. It is the only two-state tour on the calendar, with the opening three stages to be conducted in South Australia and the next five in Victoria. The multi-sponsored race will be backed financially and structurally by four municipal councils – the City of Mount Gambier and District Council of Grant in South Australia, and the Shires of Glenelg and Moyne in Victoria. It will start with a morning criterium at Mount Gambier’s Vansittart Park on Wednesday, August 12, and finish with a lunch-time crit on Port Fairy’s ocean front on Sunday, August 16. Mount Gambier’s Blue Lake area, Port McDonnell, Portland, Heywood, Casterton, Koroit and Peterborough will also feature prominently in the course. The route is one of the toughest and most spectacular on the NRS calendar, featuring four criteriums and four road stages. Lakes Oil, founded in Gippsland in 1947, was the naming rights

sponsor of the NRS cycling event, the Tour of Gippsland, for the past eight years. The company has expanded its operations into Victoria’s South-West and is regarded as an excellent corporate citizen. “The Tour of the Great South Coast is honored to have Lakes Oil aboard as the joint major sponsor with Fulton Hogan, “ Cycling Victoria’s chief executive officer Kipp Kaufmann said. “Lakes Oil was a tremendous major sponsor of the Tour of Gippsland, and made a fantastic contribution to its success. “Fulton Hogan is in its third year as a naming rights sponsor of the Great South Coast Tour and has been instrumental in elevating the event into the upper level of Australian cycling classics. “The Australian cycling fraternity is extremely privileged to have both companies backing this tour, along with key long-term sponsors such as Campolina, Scody, the CFMEU and MGA Insurance Brokers, plus other important support organisations along the route.”.

Fulton Hogan was founded in Dunedin in 1933 and employs 5200 staff in Australia and New Zealand. The company also engages numerous other sub-contracting organisations. Fulton Hogan’s widespread business activities include civil construction, road maintenance, asphalt production and supply-laying, light rail construction and maintenance, bridge building, water infrastructure, airport and port pavement, and traffic management. Domenic De-Fazio, Fulton Hogan’s

southern region general manager of construction, said today the company was proud of its connection with the Tour of the Great South Coast and looked forward to working in conjunction with Lakes Oil on making the tour one of the greatest in the Southern Hemisphere. Mr. De-Fazio’s comments were echoed by Lakes Oil executive chairman Rob Annells who said his company was excited to be involved in such a respected community event and was eager

ONE Magazine, ONE Advert

to make a lasting contribution to the Great South Coast region. Television coverage will be upgraded for the 2015 tour, with Channel 9 and Fox Sports heavily involved in the event for the first time, screening a total of 90 minutes of highlights. Tour entries close on August 2.

Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers • Various cellar doors throughout the Coonawarra/Penola. • July 1 – 30 Cellar Dwellers is all about hidden secrets and rare treasures – it’s the only time of the year the cellar doors dust off their museum wines, back vintages and special release wines to truly indulge the palate. It was a concept more than a decade ago when the vignerons were looking for a hook to increase visitation during the quieter winter months and it’s a concept that has thrived – attracting, particularly, the genuine wine appreciators, to sample some of the region’s best and rarest drops. Log onto www. coonawarra.org for a full list of events.

The Western District Sheep Show again is a huge attraction of the two days and in 2015, the White Suffolks will take centre stage as the Feature Breed of the show. Convenor of the White Suffolk section Steve Milne believes the feature breed display will showcase a great cross section of White Suffolks, Australia’s leading terminal sire breed. “I am expecting a record number of exhibits from across three states. Oscar nominated movie Nebraska is the next offering from the Reels Film Society, with the road trip movie screening this Thursday at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre. Nebraska centres on a father and son road trip, from Billings, Montana, to Lincoln, Nebraska, that gets waylaid at a small town where the father grew up and has scores to settle. Told with deadpan humour and a unique visual style, it’s ultimately the story of a son trying to get through to a father he doesn’t understand. Nominated for six Academy Awards and the prestigious Palme d’Or, the life of the elderly protagonist Woody and central character is explored. Wonderfully played by Bruce Dern, the director and cast add layers of insight into Woody’s seemingly fruitless journey to collect $1.5m in sweepstakes winnings. Daringly shot in black and white, the monochrome images evoke a past America, but also a sense of melancholy for a world - a rural lifestyle - that’s fading away. The supporting cast in this dramedy, led by June Squibb and

The funding is part of grants totalling $1.058 million from the State Government to improve facilities in Barwon South West aged care homes. The new works and refurbishment of Mount View are expected to cost more than $850,000 and construction is due to start by the end of 2015. The project is being funded by the State Government and from Terang & Mortlake Health Service reserves. The refurbishment will involve extending the current building with construction of three new single-bed rooms and the addition of an extended dining and sitting room and new deck area.

Last chance to see Haigh’s display in Adelaide One hundred years of Haigh’s Chocolates has gone on show at the State Library of South Australia with original packaging, chocolate moulds, memorabilia, photographs and tales from a century of delicious chocolate making. The exhibition Enjoyed for Generations – 100 Years of Fine Chocolate will be open until Sunday, July 26, and is one of Haigh’s Chocolates signature events during this, its year of centenary celebrations. Many of the items on display, including chocolate boxes sold over 80 years ago, have only been discovered throughout the last three years during which Haigh’s archivist Pam McAllister has been focused on collecting, organising and preserving the story of Haigh’s Chocolates. Director of the State Library of South Australia Alan Smith said he was delighted that Haigh’s had decided to open its archives. “It is wonderful to see a multigenerational South Australian family business such as Haigh’s Chocolates value its history and tell its story in this way,” he said. This travelling exhibition will be located in the Ante Room at the Institute Building of the State Library of South Australia, North Terrace until July 26, before visiting Sydney and Melbourne. Highlights of the exhibition will then visit Jamestown and Mount Gambier where Alfred Haigh lived and worked.

Challenge doubles as fundraiser

Parrish Fatchen had an epiphany a couple of years ago, deciding to take control of his life and forge a healthier lifestyle. Formerly of Mount Gambier, the now Adelaide based 40 year old started competing in fun runs, Tough Mudder and other popular fitness events and had one ey on competing in a marathon. Last year was going to be that year until I broken foot stopped him in his tracks but this year he took on that challenge and so much more, competing in the third annual Big Red Run, which is basically six days of marathons through the Simspon Desert. So without having ever even tackled on marathon, let alone a six day, 250km event, Parrish embarked on nine months of training and ended up finishing 15th in the field of 79 runners. the 11th male to cross the line. Parrish trained mainly in the Cleland National Park, doing back to back runs whenever possible to get used to running on tired legs. The event also doubles as a fundraiser for Juvenille Diabetes and Parrish is continuing to build his tally for that important cause.Parrish has already raised $3500 with that side of the event open until the end of the month so please donate at https://bigredrun.everydayhero.com/au/parrish. Well known local footballer Michael Edwards competed in the inaugural event and finished fifth.

Local Sport NETBALL Young Bulldogs hit major milestones Teagan Gray • 200 Games - junior & senior games Teagan Gray started playing at East Gambier in 2007 and is now in her ninth season for the Bulldogs. She started playing in the 12 & Under team, progressing through the junior grades. Along with many other of East Gambier’s junior players, whilst in the 15 & Under and 17 & Under, Teagan filled in for senior grades, playing in C Grade and A Reserve. Currently a member of the A Reserve team, Teagan plays mostly in the shooting circle and is a no fuss [player who just gets the job done. A clever mover with good pace, Teagan is an accurate finisher and strong rebounder when required. Teagan has been a member of several winning grand final teams and has been one of the major contributors to these flags. East Gambier is very proud of Teagan achieving her 200th game for the club and look forward to her playing many more games in the coming years. Left - Teagan Gray with East Gambier Netball Club president Bronwyn McCallum. Brenna McKay • 100 Games - Junior and senior games Brenna is one of East Gambier’s talented junior players, starting her career with East Gambier in 2011 in the 13 & Under team. Progressing through the junior grades and whilst a member of the 15 & Under team Brenna has also filled in for senior grades in the C, B, A Reserve and A Grade and played 15 & Under, A Grade and A Reserve last year. In 2015, she is a regular member of both the 17 & Under and A Grade line-ups. Brenna is a very versatile player and can play any position, however her defensive reach and ability to read the play make her a strong defensive player and this is where she plays her best netball. Brenna is very athletic, committed to learning and a good trainer, meaning she has a huge future with her netball. Brenna is fast earning a reputation as one of the leading defenders in the A Grade competition. East is very excited and proud on Brenna achieving her 100th Game with East Gambier and certainly look forward to her playing many more games and watch with excitement her continuing development. Bottom right - Brenna (centre) McKay with her sister Eilish and her parents and grandparents. Alex Quick • 100 Games - junior and senior games Alex starting playing at East Gambier Netball Club in 2010 where she was a member of the 12 & Under team. Progressing through the junior grades and whilst playing 15 & Under, Alex filled in for both C and B Grades and did so with ease. Currently a member of the C Grade team, Alex plays mainly in a defensive role and is a great team player. Her encouragement to her fellow team mates is one of her strong points. Alex is a tight checking player and always commits to playing 100%. Alex has also played in numerous winning grand finals with East junior teams in both the 13 & Under and 15 & Under teams. East Gambier is very proud of Alex in reaching her 100th game and look forward to her playing many more games for the club. Top right - Alex Quick with her sister Georgia and her parents.

Motor MOTOR REGIONAL FUEL PRICE REPORT When reviewing the past 12 months, SA regional fuel retailers have plenty of room to improve, but thankfully country motorists have enjoyed fair prices to finish the financial year. RAA Senior Analyst Chris West said most SA country retailers have delayed passing on cost price increases for the past five months. “This positive behaviour has meant country prices are notably lower than expected and even lower than Adelaide,” said Mr West. “This month it’s the first time there are three towns with petrol price ratings of 5 out of 5, which were Whyalla, Renmark, and surprisingly, Port Lincoln. Even diesel prices were fairly priced, with Bordertown and Victor Harbor achieving full marks, followed by Renmark with a rating of 4.6. Unfortunately, there were very few towns’ with high ratings for LPG prices where only Bordertown (3.3 out of 5) and Mount Gambier (3.2) rated as Fair, followed by Victor Harbor (2.8).” It’s been two years since RAA launched its Regional Fuel Star Rating initiative, and when looking at the past year the report card for South Australia isn’t fantastic. “We’ve crunched the numbers and when you consider petrol, diesel and LPG prices the overall rating is about 2.5 out of 5,” said Mr West. “There must be ongoing scrutiny of country fuel prices to ensure that country motorists always get a fair go.”

Safety tick of approval for new Ford Focus The 2015 LZ Ford Focus range will debut EcoBoost engine technology, improved safety and a host of key visual and feature upgrades when it arrives in Ford dealers from October. Standard across the LZ Focus range is a new fuel-efficient 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine with Auto-Stop start engine technology. The 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine develops 132 kW and 240 Nm and will be mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The automatic transmission is standard on Trend Sedan and Titanium Hatch and Sedan and optional on the Trend Hatch and Sport Hatch. Efficiency is at the heart of the 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine. The 2015 LZ Focus range delivers 7 kW more power and 38 Nm more torque than the larger capacity 2.0-litre Duratec engine it replaces, as well as producing a combined fuel efficiency figure of 5.8 litres/100km* and 6.4 litres/100km*, depending on the model. “Our award-winning EcoBoost engines are recognised globally for delivering fuel efficiency our customers expect without sacrificing performance when they need it,” according to Ford President and CEO, Graeme Whickman. “Complementing the powerful EcoBoost technology is a stylish and sophisticated look and an enhanced list of standard features like voice-activated SYNC2 connectivity with 8-inch high-resolution colour screen, satellite navigation and rear view camera that will make the 2015 Focus a compelling reason for customers to put it on their shopping lists.” The 2015 range also offers Ford’s acclaimed MyKey system as well as key

driver assistance technology that has been standardised across select models. MyKey is an industry-first technology that allows parents to program a key that limits top speed, reduce maximum radio volume, disables the radio until the seatbelts are fastened and prevents deactivation of the driver assistance and safety technologies. It works by recognising different keys for the same car and adjusting the vehicle settings according to the owner’s requirements. It works by recognising different keys for the same car and adjusting the vehicle settings according to the owner’s requirements. Apart from the 2015 Focus, MyKey is available on the Fiesta, Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Mondeo range and will be available on the soon-to-bereleased Mustang. Apart from the active and passive safety features available on the 2015 LZ Ford Focus, there are a range of new driver assistance features. Blind Spot Information System and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are new additions on the Focus Titanium, along with an enhanced Active City Stop system as standard. A standard feature on the Titanium Hatch and Sedan, Rear Cross Traffic Alert warns drivers reversing from parking spaces if other vehicles are about to cross their path#. “Our customers value Smart technologies like SYNC2 and the acclaimed MyKey system but we’ve also enhanced the Active City Stop system and now provide Blind Spot Information System with Rear Cross Traffic Alert,” Whickman said. On Titanium models Ford’s Active City Stop collision avoidance system has been enhanced and now

operates at speeds of up to 50 km/h. Active City Stop readies the brakes if a potential impact is detected and – if the driver does not respond – will automatically apply the brakes. Also featuring on Titanium models is Enhanced Active Park Assist featuring Perpendicular Parking, which enables drivers to detect suitably-sized parallel parking spaces and reverse hands-free into spaces parallel to the road and side-to-side with other vehicles. This advanced parking feature is supported by both Park-Out Assist, which helps drivers to exit parallel parking spaces; and Side Parking Aid, which delivers an on-screen visual representation and audible warning of obstacles to the sides of the vehicle, as well as to the front and rear. A full suite of airbags and advanced high strength, ultra lightweight boron steel creates a super strong safety cage to complete the safety story. Since its launch, the Focus has received wide acclaim for its ride, steering and handling, as well as passenger comfort levels. The 2015 LZ Focus gains a more sophisticated, sleek design that reflects the One Ford global design language for passenger cars. This now harmonises the LZ Focus design with the Fiesta and Mondeo range. As well, the Ford has added more sound insulation materials in doors, carpets and front wheel-arches designed to ensure a quieter cabin at highway speeds.
