FUNDING FOR CRITICAL TRAIL

Brothers combine to reach incredible milestone

At the recent Sydney Royal Wine Show, Redman Wines received one gold medal and two bronze medals, which also took Bruce and Mal Redman’s wine show medal tally over 1000. Bruce and Mal Redman are third Generation winemakers from one of the oldest, and most celebrated, family winemaking dynasties in South Australia. They took over the business from their father Owen in 1982 and since that time have received more than 1000 wine show medals around Australia. “We have continued what our father started before us and produced quality and consistence of the Redman product since we took over 33 years ago,” Bruce said. “The wine show system is a very

Phone

useful tool to have your wines independently assessed by wine professionals alongside other wines from around Australia. So to keep picking up these awards it is nice to know that we are still making wine of a high quality.” Of the current wines available the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot has picked up eight gold medals and James Halliday recently gave 95 points to the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon. Redman Wines is a family-owned business, operated by brothers Bruce and Malcolm, along with fourth-generation Daniel Redman. Redman Wines was established in 1908 by Daniel’s great-grandfather, Bill Redman, when he purchased the family’s first vineyard in Coonawarra and started

making wine. Redman Wines still specialise in producing only reds in Coonawarra, these include the Cabernet Sauvignon, a Shiraz, a Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, and ‘The REDMAN’. An integral part of the Coonawarra wine landscape, the Redman family remain true to the traditions of the grape-growing and winemaking methods that have helped build the reputation of Coonawarra as a region that produces wines of excellent quality and longevity. All wines are distributed by Porter and Co in SA and The Wine Company in the Eastern states.

Southern Grampians Shire Council is delighted that full funding for the Grampians Peaks Trail has been confirmed in the State budget. The full $19million pledged before the State election has been confirmed this week, which will ensure the completion of the southern portion of the Trail. The 144 km Grampians Peaks Trail will connect some of the Grampians’ most spectacular peaks, from the massive sandstone outcrops around Mt Zero in the north to Mount Sturgeon overlooking the Dunkeld township and the surrounding volcanic plains in the south. The full trail will provide walkers with an adventurous 13 day/12 night walk with hikers’ camps strategically located for overnight stays. Southern Grampians Shire Council has allocated funding in its 2015/16 draft budget to create a loop walk that links the Dunkeld town centre to the National Park and the Peaks Trail. Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Peter Dark says that Dunkeld was one of the fastest growing small towns in Victoria with tourism as a cornerstone of its local economy. “We have been planning for the loop walk and advocating strongly for the construction of the Peaks Trail because of the enormous opportunities for tourism development based around the Grampians,” he said. “The dramatic landscapes provide opportunities for the development of new tourism products and nature based experiences that will drive visitation in the Southern section of the Grampians National Park. “

ADVERTORIAL I Odyssey Vein Clinic Non-surgical varicose vein treatment and cosmetic injectables

Dr. Emma Nolan and practice manager Kerryn Harvey established their business Odyssey Vein Clinic to offer non surgical treatment of larger or varicose veins of the legs. They have been established in Mount Gambier for five years now and visit approximately every four weeks “Winter is the ideal time to tackle your leg veins,” said Dr. Nolan. Dr. Nolan has 17 years experience treating varicose veins non surgically with a technique called ultra-sound guided sclerotherapy. This technique involves injecting the veins instead of stripping them – it takes about 45 minutes and involves no anaesthetic, surgery, or time off work. “We offer a consult, scan, and treatment all on the same day which minimises travelling time,” Dr Nolan said. “It also means that patients don’t have to travel to Melbourne or Adelaide for treatment.”

Odyssey also offers facial volumisers the liquid facelift, paralysing injections for wrinkles and dermal fillers for facial lines and folds. “We have had a terrific response to the cosmetic side of the business—the fact that we visit monthly and can see our cosmetic patients at short notice is a big plus,” Dr Nolan said. No GP referral is required. For more information visit www. odysseyveinclinic. com.au or contact Kerryn on 0403 965 548

LOCAL Top milliner & fashion designer headline fundraiser Famed Australian milliner, Neil Grigg and award winning Melbourne fashion designer, Tiffany Treloar join creative forces for a one off Fashion Show on Friday, June 19, as a fundraiser for the Harrow Bush Nursing Centre. This fundraising event for Harrow’s primary health care service was first held in 2012 with packed out hall and Neill is back again this time with Tiffany. Harrow Bush Nursing Centre Manager, Bernadette Close said this is an excellent opportunity for women from the district and surrounding areas to view the latest designs from Tiffany and marvel at Neil’s millinery. Both Neil and Tiffany will have items available for purchase after the show. “The money raised goes towards the ongoing programs and services provided to Harrow and district,” Mrs Close said. “Without these fundraising events and the generous support of the community, the Bush Nursing Centre could not provide the wide range of programs and services currently available to our clients. “In addition to primary and emergency health services, other programs include visiting allied workers, neighbourhood house activities and monthly Planned Activity Group lunches and excursions

which provide much-needed social interaction for our local residents, particularly our seniors.” This year’s Fashion Show is an afternoon event at 2pm followed by a delicious afternoon tea at the Harrow Hall in Harrow. Drinks are available at bar prices. People will be able to meet with Neil and Tiffany and purchase items directly. Tickets cost $30 which includes the afternoon tea. For further information, including ticket bookings, phone the Harrow Bush Nursing Centre on (03)5588 2000 or email operationsadmin@hbnc.org.au.

Paul Sandby frequently returned to Windsor Castle as subject matter for his prints and arguably his finest works were his aquatints depicting Windsor Castle. He produced other prints depicting Windsor and the Gallery holds his two major gouaches depicting Windsor Forest and the Sawmill at Windsor Great Park. Sandby’s access to Windsor was arranged by his brother John who was the Keeper of Windsor Great Park which in their day was the King’s hunting preserve.

VOLUNTEERS & NURSES TO BE HONOURED

Wildlife warriors Children of the Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre’s Emu Room have been showing their community spirit by helping those in need. The story starts back in January this year when wildlife educator Susan found a baby possum in her back yard and bought it in to show the children. The children were fascinated by the tiny creature and keen to learn more. They explored the story of ‘Possum Magic’ by Mem Fox and celebrated their learning by holding an Australia Day afternoon tea. Later they invited Simone from the Wildlife Rescue Group to find out more about the baby animals she cares for. Simone visited the children a number of times over the next couple of months, bringing a variety of baby animals including; wallabies, a kangaroo, a sugar glider and possums too. The children asked many questions and learned about orphaned animals, their habitats, how to care for them and what the Wildlife Rescue Group is all about. Their enthusiasm for the baby animals made them wonder how they could help. After putting ideas forward and consulting with Simone they decided to recycle old blankets from the centre’s sleep

room to make new pouches to keep the babies warm. The children also decided to raise funds by holding a pyjama day at the centre. “This project has strengthened the children’s understanding of the importance of helping those in need and appreciating other living creatures,” educator Naomi said. Along with being a fun day for the whole Centre the Emu Room children raised almost $60. With a trip to the Millicent Vet Clinic bottles, teats and special milk powder were purchased. Late last month the children invited Simone back to the centre to present her and the baby animals with the new pouches and other items. Simone was most grateful. “The Wildlife Rescue Group relies on volunteers and receives no funding, so every contribution we receive goes a long way to saving our local wildlife,” Simone said. The Emu Room will keep in touch with Simone as she continues to visit the Centre with her rescued animals. Any further donations towards this cause can be made to the Emu Room at the Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre or by phoning Simone at the Wildlife Rescue group on 0427 396 919.

Portland District Health will celebrate the hard work and high quality care provided by its team of nurses and the contributions of its volunteers with special functions this Tuesday. As part of International Nurses Day, PDH will hold an afternoon tea in the dining room at 3pm and hear from four nurses about their journeys to Portland. Acting Director of Nursing Erin Barker said there would also be activities, including a crossword puzzle based on the 1960 Nurses Dictionary, which will include terms not used today and terms where their meaning has changed, and a captioning a nurse cartoon competition. Earlier in the day, PDH will hold a morning tea in the staff training room as part of National Volunteering Week from 10.30am. Volunteering Australia has adopted the theme `Give Happy, Live Happy’ for this year’s event. More than six million Australians volunteer each year and PDH has more than 150 volunteers on its books. People interested in finding out more can contact volunteer coordinator Trish Rawlings on (03)5521 0402.

Improve your health the lazy way Improve your health the “Lazy” way with Marie Bean, Australian author of two very successful books on health and fitness: “Lazy Runner” and “Lazy Loser”. Marie will be talking about taking a realistic look at keeping fit and healthy at the Mount Gambier Library this Thursday at 7pm. Marie Bean is a health and fitness consultant who loves nothing more than to bust myths about the industry she’s so passionate about. Her first book, ‘Lazy Runner’, draws on her 25 years of experience as an injury-free marathon runner. She is also a running coach and founder of the successful Lazy Runner clubs across Australia. “Exercise is one of those things that sounds really great, until you have to do it! If only getting fit and staying that way, was as easy as buying all of the right gear. Unfortunately, having the best jogging shoes and sexiest running top is only the start: you still have to use them.” explains Marie Bean. More recently, Marie has launched her second book “Lazy Loser” where she confronts weight loss myths and diet fads head on and offers sustainable, practical strategies and advice for implementing simple, effective and enjoyable changes to one’s lifestyle and mindset. Lazy Loser examines Australia’s food, exercise and body image mentality to evaluate where the real problems lie; it breaks the population into “temptation categories” and then suggests realistic approaches to overcoming weight issues long term. “There is no magic

bullet to weight loss. I wish there was and it came coated in chocolate, but alas, there is not” said Marie Bean. Marie’s presentations are light hearted and you will have lots of laughs learning how to get fit the “Lazy” way. This is a free community event with registration required. The public can book their seat on line www. mountgambier.sa.gov.au/library under “Events” or telephone the Mount Gambier Library (08)8721 2540.

The RACV’s Good Citizen Program has kick-started Mpower’s community fundraising appeal for its new $1million respite and therapy facility in Warrnambool. The RACV has donated $2000 to the appeal which will be used to provide off-street disability parking. Mpower CEO Kerry Nelson said the support was heartening. “It’s pleasing that a state-wide group such as the RACV has decided to support our project,” Ms Nelson said. “The Good Citizen Program aims to support local Victorian communities and we are very pleased that it has given our appeal a strong start,” she said. The grant will be put towards parking at the rear of the new centre at 84-86 Koroit Street. “We are providing disability parking behind the centre and thought it was an appropriate use for RACV funds,” Ms Nelson said. Judy Williams from the Warrnambool RACV branch said the Mpower project was a good fit with the Good Citizen Program. “Staff in Warrnambool read about Mpower’s plans and thought it was a worthy recipient of the program,” Mrs Williams said. “It’s something that benefits the Warrnambool and district community, improves quality of life and supports people who face disadvantage, all of which fit the criteria for the program,” she said. The Warrnambool RACV has previously supported Food Bank, Tasty Plate and Emma House. The new Mpower centre is on track for completion by the end of 2015 and is being designed to meet the respite and therapy needs of clients. The new facility will be opposite Mpower’s head office and will provide a much-needed respite and therapy centre for people with disabilities and ease long-term space problems in the Mpower office. The property was purchased from Mpower reserves and a $100,000 donation from patron Geoff Handbury was used to kick start the community appeal to help fund the special redevelopment project. People can support the appeal by going to www.mpower.org.au or contact Mpower reception on (03)5561 8111. It is hoped to raise $750,000.

LOCAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Children’s cancer charity Camp Quality is putting an urgent call out for 50 new volunteers to sign up in SA to coincide with National Volunteer Week. There are 456 children on Camp Quality’s books in SA but only 176 volunteers. The charity, which runs resilience-building camps across SA, offers one-to-one support for each child living with cancer in the form of a Camp Companion – a volunteer tasked with making the child feel optimistic and confident after cancer has knocked their selfesteem. Companions are gender-matched (so boys with men, girls with women), meaning the charity needs 30 men and 20 women in SA to help the 30 boys and 20 girls living with cancer awaiting a Camp Companion. In addition, Camp Quality SA requires the support of fundraising volunteers in the Port Pirie, Mount Gambier and Adelaide metro areas to help organise and coordinate fundraisers such as quiz nights, bingo nights and casual clothes days at their workplace. Camp Quality relies heavily on volunteers and currently receives no ongoing government funding. To support Camp Quality to help create a better life for every child living with cancer in SA, please visit www. campquality.org.au for info on donating or volunteering.

Record crowds for food & wine extravaganza Victoria’s favourite food and wine festival, Grampians Grape Escape, has celebrated its most successful year yet, attracting a record crowd of wine lovers, foodies and everyone in between to Halls Gap over the May 2 and 3 weekend. The festival was officially opened by Victorian Minister for Major Events and Tourism, John Eren, before he toured the festival grounds to meet and mingle with exhibitors and attendees, sampling the region’s most renowned produce and taking part in some traditional grape stomping. Minister Eren was delighted to open the festival, “The Grampians Grape Escape is an ideal opportunity to showcase the beauty of the Grampians National Park to visitors from Melbourne and beyond. The festival is going from strength to strength,” Minister Eren said. The 2015 festival was busier than ever before with Saturday’s crowd attendance breaking all previous Grampians Grape Escape records set, with 45 per cent of visitors making the journey from Melbourne. Festival director David Wheaton was thrilled with the festival’s outcome, “This year’s festival has been something else, with attendees up 30 per cent from last year, the combination

of entertainment, food, wine and talent provided the perfect mix of ingredients for a very successful festival,” he said. “Luigi Bazzani from Warrenmang Vineyard, who is a seasoned festival exhibitor even had to

replenish his stock overnight to meet the demands of festival goers. “Everyone involved has worked so hard in the lead up to make the festival a success, from the producers themselves,

the volunteers and everyone else behind the scenes; they have all helped to take the Grampians Grape Escape to a whole new level.” Grape Escapees revelled in the glorious weather, dancing to the tunes of Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses, with Sons of May and Buddha in a Chocolate Box proving a big hit with crowds. Festival ambassador, food journalist and television personality, Matt Preston entertained audiences by sharing his culinary secrets using local Grampians produce before leading fiery discussion panel debates with top winemakers. Other big hits over the weekend included the Seppelt Masterclass program with dishes prepared by some of the Grampians finest chefs and paired with wines from the region’s most celebrated wineries.Wine lovers indulged in a wide variety of the region’s finest wines, with a local once again taking home the hotly contested Grampians Shiraz at the Barrique Auction. With residents from Halls Gap Zoo on hand to meet the little foodies, kids saw plenty of action as well, delighting in The Great Grape Stomp, rock climbing and entertainment by The Kazoos.

AT THE GALLERY Until May 29 Tatiara Palette Painters WALKWAY GALLERY, BORDERTOWN Tatiara’s local art group presents its annual exhibition showcasing the new skills learnt throughout the year.

LOCAL Masterchef prodigy to launch first book Runner-up of 2014 MasterChef Australia, Laura Cassai, will be launching her first book, My Italian Kitchen, a feast of family recipes inspired from her Italian heritage, at the Mount Gambier Library on Tuesday, May 19 at 7pm. At 19 years of age, Laura was the youngest contestant to ever compete in the MasterChef Australia grand final. Laura is remembered by television followers as the warm, young lady who displayed great passion and respect for food, drawing from the heart and family to prepare dishes that wowed the celebrity judges and inspired home chefs with skills far beyond her age. Laura will be introducing her recently published book My Italian Kitchen, as well as demonstrating some of the recipes, which have been described as simple dishes with sophisticated flavours. Fans will have the opportunity to hear firsthand about Laura’s

journey from learning to cook from her Nonna, to her time spent in the MasterChef headquarters creating knockout dishes.“My first real food memory is from when I was six years old, living in the beautiful countryside of Tuscany in Italy, where my Nonna Rosa taught me how to make homemade gnocchi,” Ms. Cassai said. “There was more flour on the floor and in the cracks of the cupboards than in the pasta itself. To this day it is still one of my fondest memories. I look back on my time spent in Italy as a child, it seems like yesterday. I can still smell the chestnuts cooking over the open fire, feel the damp forest floor while foraging for mushrooms, and taste the crisp salty potato focaccias we would pick up every morning before school. That was nearly 14 years ago now.” The Mount Gambier Library is thrilled to host Laura Cassai. Food culture has grown considerably in the last few years, with the emphasis in many restaurants and family homes on providing clean, fresh, seasonal and regional dishes. Laura combines this ethos with her family heritage and has received a huge amount of respect from celebrity chefs world-wide. “Marco Pierre White has openly quoted that he could not have cooked dishes to such a high quality at Laura’s age,“ said library events coordinator Kristi Leamey. Tickets for the book launch and demonstration are just $7 and on sale now from the Mount Gambier Library until sold out. The event will take place at City Hall, The Main Corner (entrance via the Cave Gardens) with a live stream onto the big screen for the audiences viewing.

Music program launched A weekend of live music is gearing up to entertain festival goers over the Penola Coonawarra Festival in May. From rock-a-billy music to an Open Mic competition, Penola will come alive with sounds that are sure to delight and entertain both locals and visitors alike, over this popular Festival weekend. On Friday, May 22, Penola’s Prince of Wales Hotel will be rocking to the sounds of two piece garage band ‘Gator’, fronted by favourite son Jarrad Kilsby, followed by local band ‘The Led Sleds’. The scene will be set with rock-a-billy tunes to continue the festivities. On Saturday night, the popular Shenanigans returns to the Coonawarra Hall. The evening has been a standing drawcard for people who want to kick up their heels and dance the night away to a variety of music by several bands performing in the same venue. Organiser Simon Weston said that the formula for the evening has proven so popular in the past, it’s one that he’s sticking with. “Often in regional areas like ours, people rarely get the chance to experience several genres of music in one place – particularly in such a unique atmosphere like the Coonawarra Hall,” said Mr Weston. “With fantastic live music,

K

food and wine, and a great community spirit, the evening promises something for locals and visitors alike.” The evening’s line-up includes local Kalangadoo singer songwriter Hugh McColl, and Limestone Coast based Christy Wallace who returns with her country folk band. A seven piece band ‘The Sloe Ruin’ will feature ‘country honky tonk’ tunes and is set to raise the roof for this popular event. Also amongst the evening’s highlights will be popular singer Kelly Menhennett who returns to the Coonawarra Hall after wowing audiences last year. Food by Mt Gambier’s Gala Mustafa will also be available, along with drinks from the Coonawarra Hall bar. Sunday, May 24, will feature a ‘Stroll down the Lane ‘ as Penola’s Petticoat Lane comes alive with all day buskers, artists at work, vintage cars on display and its range of Vintage shops.Music lovers will also have the opportunity to step up and showcase their own talents at the ‘Royal Oak

It’s a chance to shine on the small stage, with cash money prizes and loads of heartfelt applause and encouragement on offer. Musicians, poets, spoken word performers and song writers - in fact ‘anything goes’ - are invited to entertain the audience with their talents. Tickets for ‘Shenanigans’ are $25 and are available through the Penola Visitor Information Centre on (08) 8737 2855 and at the door on the night. Kids program set to impress & excite The popular ‘Little Kids Big Kids’ Zone returns for this year’s Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival with a quality line-up of events to capture every age. From Dreamcatcher Making workshops to working with Dribbles the Clown, children will have plenty of opportunity to express themselves over the four day Festival, with the theme of ‘Imagine’. Held from Thursday May 21 to Sunday May 24, the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival has gained a strong reputation for providing a range of accessible events for children and families, with many being free or at minimal cost. Included in the program is a wooden toy making workshop, gingerbread men decorating, a facepainter and come & try croquet, fire sculpting – suitable for groups and families – and an exciting ‘imagine’ art workshops where participants can create their own mini artworks from recycled art materials that will be incorporated into a larger art installation for display in the central marquee. A Rainbow Serpent Chalk Art competition

is set to transform the Memorial Park pathway into its own art installation, while the popular Penola Community Library’s story telling and workshop will focus on imagining life beneath the ocean, with stories, craft and activities for children aged three to seven. The flagship of the kids program will be internationally awarded performance ‘Sticks Stones Broken Bones’ – a quirky and highly imaginative show that has been a sellout at international and nationwide Festivals. Held on Sunday May 24 at McCorquindale Park’s Rymill Hall, organisers anticipate it will be a sell-out event and is perfect for families. Penola’s Memorial Park will be the centre focus of the Children’s program over the weekend, with many free giant games to play adding to the festive atmosphere. Sales for many of the ticketed events are now on sale through the Penola Coonawarra Visitor Information Centre, or go to www.artsfestival.com.au for full booking details.

Unexpected windfall for customer

LOCAL

Taking out a home and contents insurance policy has led to a $10,000 surprise win for Mount Gambier resident Sharon Lockwood. Mount Gambier Branch Manager Tracy Koop said she’s never enjoyed ringing a customer so much – knowing she was ringing with a winning message. “I don’t know who was more excited when I was given the details that our branch had a winner in our national insurance promotion,” Ms Koop said. “The insurance competition has been running since January and you hope that one of your customers is in it to win it, and when you get the good news, it’s just incredible.” Ms Lockwood was over the moon to get the call from the branch and had actually forgotten that she was in with the chance to win one of the then $10,000 draws. “It’s like a raffle, you buy a ticket and you forget about it and you just don’t think you are going to win it,” she said. “So when Tracy called it was amazing – you know someone is going to win but you just don’t think it will be you.” Taking $10,000 off her home loan is a lucky break for Sharon and she’s pleased to have that extra financial safety net. “You just never know with the economy these days and to have that extra money paid off means so much

English international visiting Portland

more than the $10,000 win, it’s just such a bonus,” Ms Lockwood said. “You know you need insurance and you just organise it and you don’t think it is going to make such a big difference.” Ms Koop said there are still five more chances for customers to also get that winning feeling with the bank. “Customers who take out a new home and contents or landlord’s policy before June 30 go into the remaining five draws of $10,000 draws,” she said. “Whether it’s something as simple as a window breaking, or as serious as a house fire, protecting your big assets in one of the most important things you can do, and if it gives you a chance to win big, even better.” To find out about the bank’s great range of insurance and how a policy can help you to win, call into the branch at 16 James Street, phone (08)8726 3200 or visit www.bendigobank.com.au/ getinsurance

Glenelg Shire’s netball fans are counting down the days until Melbourne Vixens Vice Captain Geva Mentor arrives in Portland as part of The Whitten Project. As one of the region’s most popular sports for females, there will be few not excited by the two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist’s visit this Weddnesday. Mentor is also the Community Engagement Officer at Netball Victoria and will share her knowledge and passion through a number of workshops and presentations, including an open netball clinic for the community. At this stage Mentor will conduct a leadership presentation at Bayview College before brunch with The Whitten Project Young Leaders and Councillors at Glenelg Shire Council. She will then host a leadership and netball coaching workshop

with The Whitten Project Young Leaders before finishing the day at Flinders Park for a community netball clinic. The Whitten Project is coordinated through the Western Bulldogs Football Club and organisers were conscious about providing an even balance of male and female presenters, partnering with Netball Victoria in 2014. The partnership has been an overwhelming success, in terms of increasing female participation, with 24 males and 42 females forming the 2015 group compared with 32 males and 28 females in 2014. Mentor was born in Bournemouth, England and was selected for the England national team in 2000, debuting the following year against New Zealand, at age 16. To date she has received a silver medal at the 2005 World Youth Netball Championships in Miami, Florida, and two bronze medals at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games. In 2014 Mentor played her fourth season with Melbourne Vixens as their number one goal keeper. The Vixens went onto to win the Grand Finals in July, becoming ANZ Champions for the second time in their history. Mentor is currently training hard for the 2015 Netball World Championships in August.

Grant secures critical youth program The Portland Secondary College Re-Engagement Program has been saved until at least 2016 thanks to a generous and significant grant from the Andrew Jack Trust. The Trust has given a $100,000 one-off grant to the Re-Engagement Program, saving it from imminent closure. While the grant ensures its short-term survival, significant ongoing sustainable funding is still needed for its long-term existence. Trustee for the Andrew Jack Trust, Portland lawyer Pat Howman, said the re-engagement program was

a worthy cause. “In my role as a lawyer I’ve often seen the impact of kids dropping out of school. This program tries to bring them back on track for a more positive outlook,” Mr Howman said. “If it closed you’d have to worry about the prospects for these young people. It has been very successful and we hope bridging funding will allow it to find ways to continue for a long time. It’s of great benefit to students and our community at large.” Mr Howman said the grant would give the school time to try to find ongoing funding. “I believe the government should fund this type of program for the benefit of local society in general; it shouldn’t have to rely on a charitable organisation,” he added. “Hopefully this will show the level of local support and need for the program and convince the government to provide ongoing funding.” School principal Toni Burgoyne said the Trust’s grant had saved the program in the interim and given it breathing space to secure ongoing funding. again have to make a decision on its future.” The Portland Secondary College Re-Engagement Program began in 2011 in response to the significant level of youth disengagement in the Glenelg Shire.

Local Sport MSENA - Demons produce shock victory Reigning champions Kalangadoo have moved through the first four rounds of the 2015 season relatively untroubled and when Jayde Peacock produced a trademark interception to turn over Port MacDonnell’s first centre pass, it looked like the script was set to follow its usual pattern. But stung by their last round loss to Robe, the Demons had brought a new intensity to the contest and started to force Kalangadoo into a raft of uncharacteristic errors. Pressure on the defensive wing by Megan Hein and strong rebounding from Brooke Hawkins and Belinda Scott, saw the Port MacDonnell shooters getting plenty of scoring opportunities and Tamara Ferguson grabbed those opportunities with both hads, scoring 10 of her team’s 14 goals for the quarter, converting at 100 percent as the visitors powered to a five goal quarter time lead. The home side swung the changes at the first break with Leah Ousey moving out to goal defence, Mikaila Pitt heading under the defensive post and Jade Lythgo moving to the defensive wing. The changes did see a tighter quarter ensue, although Marie Lewis continued to drive hard and feed Ferguson and Toni Lee Gilmore with precision. The Magpies made a small dent in the deficit, reducing the

margin to four goals at the main change. Kalangadoo coach Kirsty Egan again made changes, this time rejigging the offensive end of the court, moving herself to wing attack, Peacock to centre, Jenna Paproth (Pitt) to goal attack and Kylie Schultz to goal shooter. Port MacDonnell had come to play though and their defensive pressure all over the court ensured that scoring opportunities were few and far between for the Magpies. Kalangadoo scored only six goals for the quarter, not helped by the tough windy conditions, and at the final change the Demons enjoyed an eight goal lead. The home side threw everything into the last quarter with Peacock creating a number of turnovers and Ousey and Pitt rebounding strongly but the closest Kalangadoo could get was four goals and in the end the final margin was six goals. Hein and Hawkins, two new faces at the Bay, were best for the winners, while Peacock and Ousey, multi premiership players at the Magpies, were best for the home side. In other matches, Glencoe also bounced back from a disappointing loss the previous round to secure a hard fought eight goal victory over Kongorong. The match saw Madeline

Watson make her A Grade debut for the Murphies at goal attack, combining well with Sarah Kasparian. Thanks to the defensive efforts of Bec Edwards and Ebony McDiarmid, Glencoe enjoyed a three goal quarter time lead, and by half time it was only a two goal advantage. Glencoe started to take control of the contest in the second half, with Edwards and McDiarmid creating plenty of turnovers for their team mates to capitalise on. Ashlea Edwards was getting the job done through the middle as a critical link player, feeding the shooting combination with precision and by the final whistle the Murphies had secured an eight goal victory. The game was dominatd by the two teams’ shooters, with Kasparian shooting 52 of her side’s 60 goals and Tabatha Sanderson providing 42 of her team’s 52. The remaining two matches went the way tipsters would have anticipated with Robe backing up its win over Port MacDonnell will a solid victory over Tantanoola and Nangwarry secured its breakthrough victory for 2015 with an 11 goal victory over Mt Burr.

Kia Motors Australia has joined forces with Driver Safety Australia and Australian Road Safety Foundation to become a partner in the annual Fatality Free Friday road safety campaign. “Kia is proud and privileged to be a supporting partner of Fatality Free Friday,” KMAu Chief Operating Officer Damien Meredith said. “As a vehicle manufacturer Kia is acutely aware of the benefits of any campaign to improve safety on our roads. “While it would be ideal to have every day ‘fatality free’, the Fatality Free Friday campaign is a worthy goal and one which will focus attention on the need for everyone to take responsibility for road safety.” The 2015 Fatality Free Friday initiative was launched in Sydney lasy week in an event embraced by the emergency services most closely associated with road safety _ police, ambulance and fire and rescue. Fatality Free Friday founder and Australian Road Safety Foundation CEO Russell White said that last year 1155 drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycle riders began a journey ending in tragedy and that the most effective way of reducing this number is for individual road users to recognize the important role they each play. “We need to change our culture and use social pressure to create real behavioral change - we are the key to safer roads and it is our actions, behaviors and decisions that can mean the difference between life and death,” Mr White said.
