Celebrating 160 years of racing, fashion & fun People will travel far and wide to celebrate this year’s Queens Birthday long weekend in the small town of Apsley, with the racing club celebrating 160 years of racing with the running of the Di Giorgio Family Wines Apsley Cup at the Edenhope Racecourse on Sunday, June 7. The cup day is set to be sharp, striking and sophisticated - the theme is black and white. With an eight race program, full TAB status and a $30,000 cup the punters and racing enthusiasts will be kept happy and the on course entertainment will delight the families and socialites. Live music by local Portland band Maton Season, an AWI wool fashion parade, and a visit from the Melbourne Cup adds aspect that you don’t see at your average race day. Another highlight will be the Royal Mail Hotel Fashions on the Field. Don your black and white outfit or woolen garments and stand out from the crowd to try and win one of many great prizes. Categories are classic race wear and best dressed in wool along with best dressed couple. The younger ones won’t miss out there are many great prizes for the children who dress up. When they are not

bouncing away on the Edenhope & District Community Bank jumping castle the kids will be more than catered for in the West Wimmera Shire’s children’s marquee. This supervised marquee will include face painting, games, toys and crafts and a special treat…... The Apsley Racing Club is pleased to announce the return of the Great Gizmo, a unique character with a particular magic of his own, able to entertain all audiences from children to grandparents and everyone in-between! The races are also a great chance to get out with friends, family or work colleagues, and a marquee package will help make the day that little bit more enjoyable. You might like to take the option of dining in the 160 celebration marquee, or book a marquee with friends, there are many options available check out the country racing website for more details. Apsley has a host of events planned to complement the races, kicking off on Saturday with the two local football and netball clubs Edenhope/ Apsley & Harrow/Balmoral going head to head at the Apsley Football grounds to win the West Wimmera Shield. On Saturday night the Apsley

hall will play host to a night of nights, starting at 7pm the Cup Eve Black Tie Ball. A great night of entertainment with popular Adelaide band Jimmy and the Mirrors performing live. Tickets include entertainment and dinner and admission to the races the next day, the event is BYO only and there are free buses running from Naracoorte, Frances and Edenhope. Buses to and from the races will be running from Naracoorte, Frances, Apsley, Edenhope, Penola & Harrow, the gates open at 11am with the first race set to be around 11:30am. After the races everyone is invited back to the Border Inn, the after party venue to celebrate the successful and most memorable long weekend on the social calendar for 2015. Make sure you book now.

As cooler winter weather sets in, it may be tempting to think that the need for flea control diminishes. Indeed, cooler outside temperatures may reduce (but not eliminate) flea infestation from outdoor environments. However, warm winter homes remain a perfect environment for ongoing flea development and infestation of pets. From

LOCAL Finding a place for our young people ‘Finding My Place’ is an alternative learning experience offered to high school students around the Limestone Coast. Hosted by the Mount Gambier Library, the program consists of a series of interactive workshops designed to engage with the students on a practical level, allowing the students to gain practical skills in a safe, alternative and engaging environment. The Finding My Place program has consecutively run for eight years, courtesy of Terasa Nearmy, the director of the Mount Gambier based program. The workshops range anywhere from interactive creative arts workshops, in-depth discussions about the consequences of poor life choices, courses educating the student about how to apply for part or full time jobs, and hands on mechanical work taken place at the Barry Maney Ford workplace. The program runs for 10 weeks, consisting of nine weeks of workshops, with the final week ending with the student’s graduation from the program, celebrated in a graduation ceremony where the students are awarded a certificate, and one student is awarded an iPad, donated by Friends of the Library. In order for the students to attain a certificate of completion, they must attend at least four of the workshops held, and the student which shows the most progress, attendance rate and general enthusiasm towards each workshop is then also awarded the iPad. The majority of students which attend the program are students who are seeking more a more interactive, hands on, engaging and visual work and learning environment. The students learn a range of “real life” skills which are not generally taught within a regular schooling environment. Motivation

and support are offered generously throughout the program, with course leaders inspiring the student to continue with their schooling and push past obstacles or barriers which may be placed in front of them in the process of striving for their goals. Program director, Terasa Nearmy was approached by her boss eight years ago when the library’s staff realised they offered various courses and community events for the young, adult and elderly age ranges within the community, however had nothing on offer in terms of the youth of Mount Gambier. Terasa was given the task of finding a program for youth in which the Mount Gambier Library could embody in order to show their support the youth of the community. Terasa, having a strong passion for youth and working alongside them in order to motivate success and persistence, discovered the Finding My Place program which was initially kickstarted in Belmont during 2006. Once the idea of beginning a Mount Gambier strand of the program was projected within the Mount Gambier community, positive feedback and encouragement flooded back, which pushed the program into motion within the

Mount Gambier community in 2007. The program has been a great success amongst the Limestone Coast community, with Mount Gambier High School, Grant High School, Saint Martins Lutheran College, Independent Learning Centre and Allendale East Area School taking part within the annual program. Each school nominates five students each year to participate within the program, the student then attend a one hour workshop held each Wednesday during school hours. The program in general is defined as an Alternative Learning Experience, which sets the program and its within workshops apart from generalised school classes by maintaining a level of engaging, visually stimulating and socially

engaging activities and tasks set for the students around each individual and separate work shop. The students are able to experience off campus seminars, which allow the students to break out of the regular school environment and experience new environments, similar to those in which students may be employed into within the future.

Waterloo to Vietnam, 1815 – 1972 RIDDOCH ART GALLERY, MOUNT GAMBIER Until May 10 An exhibition full of information and relics of wars past, mainly on some unknown conflicts that have occurred from the early 19th century, to Vietnam. The items shown here in this exhibition, are definitely not to glorify, they have all had many custodians since their owners have passed on, and probably many more in the years to come. They are a testament to the Folly of war, and a reminder of its futility.

GREAT EXPERIENCE Heywood Kindergarten will feature in a new State Government digital promotion, ‘Koori Kids Shine at Kinder’. The Glenelg Shire Council run facility was contacted by Koori Engagement Support Officers about the project at the end of April, with confirmation of their involvement received this week. The feature is expected to include testimonials from families, teachers and children as well as photos to be featured on the department website. The initiative is part of a new Victorian Government campaign to get more Aboriginal children to start three and four year old kindergarten. Koori Kids Shine at Kindergarten was launched on Closing the Gap day with a clear message for Aboriginal families - it’s not too late to enrol your child. The kinder year started in February, but parents can still enrol their children to join their local program. Kindergartens, schools and support services across the state are talking to Aboriginal families about the benefits of kinder and encouraging them to get their children involved. For Aboriginal children, three and four year old kindergarten is free. Two years of kindergarten is proven to make a big difference to how children fare at school. It helps them became confident learners, and assists with their communication skills and social development Kindergartens are supported to provide quality, culturally aware programs that nurture Aboriginal children’s cultural identity. The campaign includes direct engagement with local government and support services in areas with higher numbers of Aboriginal families.

Held at the Barn Palais, Mount Gambier, #DID15 will see conference delegates immersed in the theme ‘Powering Up Your Herd’; an expose of new technology and research around genomics, herd testing, on-farm innovation, herd management and farm business, delivered by a line-up of internationally renowned speakers and dairy industry leaders. Dr Jennie Pryce (pictured bottom right) from Department of Economic Development and La Trobe University and Brian Houin (pictured top right), Homestead Dairy, Indiana USA will give an international perspective on the use of genomics in commercial female selection, optimising breeding programs and accelerating genetic gain. The application of precision technologies for pasture-based dairy systems and potential technological developments on dairy farms over the next 10 to 20 years will be explored by the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture’s Dr Richard Rawnsley and Dr Matthew Shaffer from the Dairy Futures CRC will discuss innovation and new research in herd testing. The afternoon will include a session on ‘Stepping Up’ which will explore career pathways and future planning in dairy. Two young SA farmers will talk about

their journeys in dairy farming; from study, to sharefarming and moving up the chain. COLLECTED STUPIDITY Big announcements... by Robbie Tansel I’m going through some sort of post-traumatic stress thing at the moment. It seems like everyone I know is announcing that they’ve ruined their life. This is making me flash back to when Donna told me she was pregnant. Just to be

clear, this is not my way of announcing that Junior Tansel v2.0 is on the way. I hope not anyway. I’ve learnt from my mistakes. At the time it actually seemed like a good thing but the last three years has altered my way of thinking a fair bit. To be honest I found announcing the pregnancy to family and friends a little uncomfortable before Cyclone Shaquille even arrived on the planet. Essentially we were announcing to our family that we do something that we’d spent from age eight trying to avoid talking to them about. Most of us then spend from 16 trying to keep it hidden that we do now do it. It was awkward being forced to have that discussion with Mum and Dad, especially as they insisted on having a wide range of photos and videos to look at. Some of them were ones they hadn’t made themselves. It didn’t help things at all when Donna’s father instantly said, “So you’ve been (insert whichever word you use to describe procreation in here) my daughter?!” The good thing was we managed to get him booked into a home shortly after. We only have to listen to his rubbish when it suits us now. Thankfully most people’s reactions were pretty positive and supportive. To our face, anyway. I’m sure plenty of people talked behind my back about how unlikely it was that I’d be at all successful on this newest endeavour. It’s funny how you get a different reaction to announcing pregnancy according to how old you are. Anywhere in your teens, you’re likely to

get a pretty frosty reaction. You’re not going to have to be that good a reader of body language and tone of voice to know that people are a little concerned or disappointed. At least one parent is likely to tell you you’ve ruined your life. Quite rightly, they are likely to be asking you what your plan is. How does this impact on your future? How are you going to support yourself and a child? How has this changed all the plans you have for the future? Are you going to expect us to raise the child? Between ages 20 and 23 the reaction is a little less easy to predict. A lot of it depends on what you’ve managed to achieve since school. Have you started to work down the path of whatever your future is going to be. Are you building a career. Are you part of the way through a university degree that you might need to postpone or cut back on now? In this case, you are again likely to concern your loved ones who think you are destroying your future. They’re right by the way. They’ve had kids and they know. On the other hand, if you have been bumming round and achieving little, you may as well have a kid. Maybe it’s the thing that will actually get you to grow up! From 23 to 35 people are likely to be quite supportive and encouraging when you announce the little one on the way. They know it’s not going to end well but they think you’re at least in with a chance of not totally stuffing it up. They’re wrong. You don’t have any better or worse chance regardless of your age. From 35 onwards, people are likely to think you’re ruining your life again. Hopefully you had your life somewhat under control and now you’re throwing a spewing, pooping, screaming nuclear bomb right into the middle of it. Anything after forty five they’re sending emails to A Current Affair and the Guinness Book of Records. The embarrassing moments didn’t stop after birth either. Following Shaq’s arrival in the world the first question everyone was asking me was what sex he was. How do you answer that? Essentially whatever you tell them you’re admitting you looked at a child’s genitals. I thought that was frowned upon. I made a conscious decision not to look and just told everyone that I had decided to respect my child’s privacy. I would ask Shaquille to look for himself and tell me when he was old enough to speak. Like I said. It doesn’t matter what age you are, you can still mess up your children. For any parenting advice (directed to me, not from me obviously), I can be emailed at robbietansel@gmail.com

Finding a place for our young people from page 22 Within the program students visit businesses and organisations including Ovation Mount Gambier, Barry Maney Ford, and Giannis Beauty and Body Retreat. Guest speaker at the opening event, Joanna Fincham (pictured right), spoke in depth about her life story, one of depression, a longterm eating disorder, an abusive relationship and suicidal tendencies. Joanna, now happily married to a loving husband with two little girls, used her life story in order to prove to the student that they can control their own lives with the correct amount of positivity and motivation. “Feeling lost is only a temporary feeling” is just one of the many messages Joanna preached to the students attending the courses opening presentation, “Grow and learn from your mistakes”, “There’s a positive in ever negative” and “Treating everyone as your equal” was also some advice Joanna gave the student in order to level with them that their lives are completely within their own hands, and they have the choice in what they do with their futures. Joanna preached to the attending students that no matter what there is always someone out there that loves and cares for them, and that the whole reason behind the Finding My Place program is to prove that to the students attending, prove that the students have a great amount of worth to the world and can make a difference with their lives. Joanna, having written a book about her life story, entitled “Out of the Blue”, gave an amazing and inspiring speech at the opening presentation of the program which visually touched everyone attending the presentation on an emotional level. Whilst attending the first couple of seminars, the students will usually be more reserved and hold back and questions or queries they may have in terms of what they are learning or what they will b learning in the future. However, as the course progresses, so do the children, with a high majority of children

ending the program overjoyed with the progress they personally made towards themselves as well as towards their education and motivation for learning. The program helps to further expand the students self confidence, motivation, enthusiasm to learning and self worth through in-depth workshops touching base on the importance of self respect and respect towards other and constantly maintaining a high level of positivity in order to achieve the goals the students set for themselves. The program commences throughout the second term of school each year, and is open for all high school students with a participating school.

ADVERTORIAL Get your orders in NOW Following on from our very successful Rose Open Weekends at Easter and back on Anzac Weekend, where many of you were able to get a sneak peek at the 2015 new release roses for this coming winter and other recent varieties and old favourites, we have extended the close date for rose orders to May 24, to give you all a bit of time to gather your thoughts at all of the wonderful new varieties. We have already started digging the first of the bare rooted roses for winter 2015, in fact I got a bundle of new seasons Mother’s Love bush out of the paddock especially for a Mother’s Day Special and don’t forget the new rose Love you can be ordered as a Mother’s Day gift idea too.(see opposite page) and this is why it is so important that orders are in as soon as possible. As soon as we bring the roses in from the field they are then graded and rose orders are picked as priority, with earliest dated order picked first until we run each variety out. In most cases we are completely sold out of many of our roses before we even dig them, as we have been taking orders from customers since last November in addition to this, any orders we could not fill last year are rolled over, especially the case for Daniel Morcombe and Soul Sister and even Black Caviar, which are proving to be just as popular this season as the past two. The intensity of colour in the autumn blooms is always a good indicator of the true colours of the rose flowers and was a great opportunity for everyone to see the roses in all their glory. Don’t worry if you missed out, we have posted very accurate photos of all the new roses, along with descriptions on the facing page and on our website

www.limestonecoastroses.com.au, there is also a pdf version that you can download or print off. You can also order your roses through the website or ring (08)8723 1325. Hurry if you would like to order the Anzac Pack (see opposite page) which contains the two new releases marking the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli,Veteran’s Honour and The Gallipoli Rose and we have added The RSL Rose to make a Commemoration Planting pack for only $59.85 for all three. The Love You rose for this season and Wedding Bells has also been very popular with orders along with the Opportunity Rose, which donate part proceeds to pancreatic cancer. England’s Rose, the 2015 new release from David Austin, has also been very popular It is associated with Princess Diana after her death. The RSL Rose, too, has been incredibly popular in recent weeks, as many couldn’t get it last season. We are sold out of many roses even before they come in out of the field, so don’t leave ordering until they are in or you will miss out. We also have a huge range of David Austin standard roses this season, which is great, as we are one of only a few growers still selling these varieties. We have continued our Early Bird Special on standard roses until May 24 also, so you only have a few days to get in and get a further discount on your order. Limestone Coast Roses is already the lowest priced rose grower in Australia, as you are buying direct, but an additional discount is given to those who order early and remember we can send roses all over Australia, so you can even send some of our lovely Limestone Coast grown roses to family and friends, or they can order direct.

Here at Limestone Coast Roses we not only supply all the new releases but all the old favourites that have been popular for decades, such as Double Delight and Mister Lincoln, right through to all the David Austin English perfumed roses, that thrive so well in our climate. At last look, we actually stocked the largest range of David Austin Roses in Australia as many of the older varieties have gone out of production by the few remaining rose growers in Australia. So, if you have been searching for that old or unusual variety be sure to give us a call as the chances are we may just have it. We also specialise in heritage roses or old fashioned roses from all those lovely old French perfumed varieties, to many that have been lost over time. We also stock the entire range of thornless roses which have taken off so well in Australia and we are by far the lowest in prices on these. Pink Intuition, one of the 2012 new releases, has been very popular and we are nearly sold out. It is a sport of the ever popular Red Intuition, which of course has lovely long cutting stems, can hold for 50 days in a vase and is a knockout every time we have a vase of them in our retail shop. So, whatever it is you are looking for in roses be quick as time is running out to order. Autumn Foliage Trees Limestone Coast Advanced Trees is hosting its Autumn Festival of Colours at present (see opposite page) and in the past few weeks the number of trees that have put on their Autumn splendour is amazing. Grant District Council to honour volunteers The District Council of Grant wishes to thank all the wonderful volunteers who help provide much needed services and support to the District Council of Grant community.

The District Council of Grant is privileged to have a wide section of community volunteers involved in around 140 organisations throughout the district

Volunteers from all organisations in the District are invited to a

The St Vincent de Paul Society, or Vinnies as we have become known as, has supported South Australians for over 130 years. Every day there are Vinnies volunteers providing assistance to people in need with food, clothing and shelter in every part of the state. There are over 3,200 Vinnies volunteers in South Australia and well over 100 in the South East. Local Regional President Alan Balshaw said “I have been with the Society for 6 years and loved every minute of it. The work is meaningful and tremendously satisfying. The Society makes every effort to understand what you want to do and where your expertise is and tries to find a role that stimulates you”.

Here in the SE, the majority of assistance is provided through local groups known as Conferences, and through our Vinnies shops. The Society differs from most charitable organisations in that our volunteers are at the core of what we do. The staff support them in their endeavours, not volunteers supporting staff. “Without their dedication and commitment, our diverse range of support, assistance and services would not be possible” said Alan. If anyone is interested in joining our dedicated team of volunteers, call into one of our shops for details on how you too can contribute in a rewarding way to assisting those in need or call Alan Balshaw on 0427 454 546 for more information.

including those involved with sporting, charity, youth, environmental, education, emergency services, history, art, seniors and progress committees. As part of National Volunteers Week, a ‘Celebration for Volunteers’ Morning Tea will be hosted by the District Council of Grant on Thursday, May 14, at 10.30am at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex. “The morning tea is a way to show appreciation to the wonderful volunteers who help provide much needed services and support to the District Council of Grant community,“ Mayor Richard Sage said, “I am always overwhelmed by the number of people who put up their hands to volunteer for so many different causes and groups within our community.” A positive example of local government and volunteers working together to increase support and services for the local community is the success of the council’s Geared2Drive program where volunteers assist young people in the region to gain their drivers licence, and the volunteers who provide support, experience and knowledge at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex. Some of the volunteers from the region’s many different community groups were recognised with Australia Day Awards this year including the Mil Lel A&H Show Society who organised their 76th annual show in 2014, Theresa Moulden who volunteers for a number of Port MacDonnell community groups, and Jedda Glynn who dedicates many hours each week to ensure the success of the Kongorong Calisthenics Club. Mayor Sage said “I am very proud to live in a community that cares about each other, and is not afraid to ‘dig in’ and get things done, and that is what makes our community, and our part of Australia, so great.” Volunteers from clubs, schools and organisations in the District Council of Grant are welcome to attend the morning tea. Free transport may be available from Tarpeena to support Volunteers wishing to attend. Please RSVP to the Community Complex on (08)8738 3000 to assist with catering requirements or to reserve transport from Tarpeena.

One of the region’s largest volunteer groups - Justices of the Peace

There are around 200 Justices of the Peace in the South East, making it one of the larger volunteer groups in the region. The JPs provide a range of services and are easily accessible at the Mount Gambier Library from Monday to Thursday each week from 10am-12pm on Monday; 10am-1pm on Tuesday;

2-4pm on Wednesday and 12-2pm on Thursday. JPs can also provide assistance outside these hours either by making contact through the library or by contacting individual JPs through the JP website – www.jp.agd. sa.gov/JPPublic “It simply provides the ability for people within the community to come in and have documents witnessed, group secretary Bev Smith said. “We work with a range of thins like statutory declarations; advanced care directives; passports, power of attorney, overseas pension documents, police checks and a range of other services. The local JP group hold two trainings as year in each of Mount Gambier, Millicent, Naracoorte and Keith and also meet four times a year. “That makes sure we keep up to date with any changes in legislation or anything like that, Bev said. “And we would encourage all JPs in the region to come to the meetings and to attend the trainings We also have two

trainers in the region – John Amoroso and Michael Bleby and they do a great job keeping us abreast of everything, Bev said. The change in advanced care directives is the most recent example of intensive training for the local JPs thanks to changes in the legislation. “It is so important that we keep up to speed, Bev said. Many of the local JPs also have specialist areas, like the handful that do drug destruction to supervise when the local police need to dispose of a drug haul, or those that a specialist JPs and can hear minor offences when the court gets a backlog. The local group also boasts many JPs with vast experience. “Some of our JPs have more than 40 years experience, Bev said. Combining that experience with the regular training and the South East is well served for this important and highly skilled arm of volunteering. “It has been great to be able to base ourselves at the library and be able to easily help the public, Bev said.

Time to celebrate mothers & assist cancer research pair, with all proceeds donated to our fundraising efforts. It’s a great way to spend Mother’s Day morning with music, prizes and giveaways, raffles, stalls, food and drinks all happening on the day. Registrations are open online now, or you can come along and register on the day, with EFTPOS facilities available. Let’s make this Mother’s Day Classic the biggest ever, and really put Mount Gambier on the map for playing its part in supporting breast cancer research. The Mother’s Day Classic, now in its 18th year, raises money for research into breast cancer, a disease which impacts one in eight Australian women. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women (1% of breast cancer is in men), with about 40 new diagnoses each day. The event, initiated by Women in Super, will this year pass the $25 million mark in funds raised for National Breast Cancer Foundation research, achieving a lasting impact on survival statistics and providing research answers for a range of other cancers. Mother’s Day Classic national chair, Louise Davidson, said 8500 families across Australia participated together in the event last year and she expected this number to increase in 2015. “Our event honours those who have faced breast cancer, yet we are getting increasing numbers of participants with no direct links to the disease. They want to take part because they recognise that this is a great cause and a wonderful, healthy family activity to do together,” Ms Davidson said.“Those looking for an appreciated present for Mother’s Day should check with Mum about registration. “Many Mums tell us that this is the present they want, more so than noodle necklaces or novelty bedsocks. It’s a fun family activity that supports vital research, providing Mums and their loved ones with a meaningful way to mark Mother’s Day.” Ms Davidson said that for every pink wig and tutu out on the course, there will be participants wearing tribute cards to honour loved ones living with breast cancer and Thank you to the volunteers who give generously of their remember those lost to the disease. “We time to enhance the lives of the residents and clients at try to make Mother’s Boandik Lodge. Regional Australia has answered the call for the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic with a record number of regional locations for the 2015 breast cancer research event, to be held on Sunday, May 10 - Mount Gambier is one of those locations. Mother’s Day Classic is an entertaining and familyfriendly event that offers people of all ages the chance to participate in a non-competitive, inspiring and fun walk/run that raises vital funds for breast cancer research. It will be held in 104 locations including every capital city and regional areas large and small, from Broken Hill, to a cattle station at Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. Get your family, friends and fitness fans together for a fun and meaningful way to start Mother’s Day. In 2013 Mount Gambier staged it’s inaugural event and with two Mother’s Day Classics now completed the region has seen more than 600 people enjoy an amazing morning at the Valley Lakes raising approximately $15,000 towards this worthwhile cause. Organisers encourage you to get a group of family or friends together to celebrate Mother’s Day, your health and your wellbeing on Sunday, May 10. ou can choose your own distance and run or walk your way around our picturesque course whilst helping to make a difference to all those living with breast cancer. To add to the fun atmosphere, “Dress Ups” are most welcome, and thanks to the support of our sponsor, The Athletes Foot, pink shoelaces are available in their store now and will be on sale at the event on Mothers Day for $2 a

Local Sport Mount High tops State After winning the local SESSSA Athletics Carnival in Naracoorte, 49 Mount Gambier High School students travelled to Athletics SA Stadium in Adelaide to compete at the day-long SSSSA Athletics Carnival last month After being relegated from A1 division last year, the school competed in A2 this year. Throughout the day, all the Mount Gambier High athletes performed at a very high standard. The specialised training students participated in was rewarded as many personal bests were achieved. Overall, the students had 15 third places, 25 second places and were successful in winning 19 events. In total there were 109 events, in which MGHS students placed in 59. Included in these results were three students whose performance was better than the State Standard (measured as being in the top 5% of competitors) for their individual event. Kaylee Whitehead (U’14 Girls High Jump) cleared 1.47m, whilst two students achieved the Standard in two events. Shylah Fosdike (U’14 Girls) ran the 200m in 27.80s whilst completing the 80m Hurdles in 14.41s. In the Under 15 Girls, Isabel Redemski’s 100m time of 13.19s and her 200m run of 27.26s were both faster than the Standard. The boys came second to Blackwood HS by 16 points, whilst the girls beat the Mid North Schools by 39 points. This meant that overall, MGHS (717 points) won the day by 58 points, a result which will return them to the A1 division in 2016.

The Cockys Auto Pro & Millicent Tyre Power 50 Target shoot was held at the end of last month. Pleasing numbers attended the first shoot of the year for the Field & Game SE Branch. New course setter Ken Atkin, who was ably assisted by Neville and Jeremy Kent, set a testing course with many varying targets. Newly appointed club president Ernie Scheidl was pleased to advise the High Gun event has been renamed “The Gambier Shooting Supplies High Gun” for this calendar year after receiving support from Dane Hastings and his family and club

Motor LOCAL RAP is returning to Mount Gambier for a community event for one night only at the Dress Circle upstairs in Mount Gambier’s Main Corner complex on Wednesday, May 6. This is a confronting, hard hitting program that can and has changed the culture of many of our road users, young and old. The Mount Gambier Community session is in addition to the annual program of visits that the Metropolitan Fire Service fire fighters take to senior secondary students throughout the Limestone Coast. It is regarded as one measure that has brought about positive change resulting in a significant reduction in fatalities in the 16-19 year old age group in South Australia, a measure that can also applied to older road users. MFS Road crash coordinators who have removed countless road crash victims from vehicles in their career will be supported in this presentation by Marcus Johnstone. Marcus is a road crash survivor who recounts his powerful story as how his life was impacted and the lives of his family, his passengers and their families were changed in an instant forever. Sophie Crauford, a local business owner and parent who attended last Year’s community RAP session said she was most impressed with their message and left believing that it was highly relevant to everyone in our community, but disappointed that there were so few attending to hear it. “I urge people to register and not miss this year’s RAP,” she said.

Pye relishing new opportunity Scott Pye felt no added pressure heading into the weekend’s V8 Supercar racing as he plied his trade in front of American business giant Roger Penske for the first time last weekend. The DJR Team Penske majority owner jetted into Perth with offsider Tim Cindric last Friday before returning to the United States at the conclusion of the meeting. Barbagallo marked Penske’s second appearance at a V8 Supercars event this season and his first time with the team since Marcos Ambrose’s shock decision to step down from driving last month. Pye had, in his own words, been “effectively fired” by the team late last year when Penske elected to scale DJR back to a single car for Ambrose. Despite the setback, the 25-year-old South Australian built a solid bond with Penske at the Clipsal 500, where they stood side-by-side in the garage during track sessions. Unknowingly positioning himself perfectly to pick-up the pieces after the Ambrose bombshell, Pye stepped into the drive at Symmons Plains and continues in the seat at the weekend. While Penske cuts an imposing figure in any garage he enters, Pye was looking forward to performing under the gaze of the 15-time Indianapolis 500 winning owner. “It does put some extra pressure on the team to perform, but I’ve spoken to Marcos about it and for me, I don’t think it’s any more pressure,” Pye told Speedcafe.com of Penske’s presence. “I put pressure on myself every weekend and no matter if he’s here or not, he’s going to be on the phone asking what’s going on. “After the positive test that we had I hope we can put on a good show, make him smile and punch the air like he did at Clipsal (when Ambrose made

the Shootout). “Really it’s just a great opportunity for me to drive in front of Roger and Tim. I was so excited to meet Roger at Clipsal and, he might say otherwise, but I thought we got along really well.” Despite an encouraging test at Queensland Raceway, Pye and the team have downplayed expectations for a sudden leap in performance at Barbagallo. Pye instead said that the main target was for the team “to be a real contender come enduro time”, when he’ll team with Ambrose for the three-event Pirtek Enduro Cup. A decision not to give Ambrose any laps at the recent Ipswich test was perhaps the strongest sign yet that the team has now rallied firmly around Pye in its quest for improvement. Not surprisingly, the youngster is revelling in the support from the team, which he notes is a significantly different environment to what it was last year. “To have Roger Penske ring you and say ‘anything you need, just let us know and we’ll get it for you and help you’… for me it’s massive,” he said of the team’s support. “I was effectively fired at the end of last year and to get the enduro drive was good, but being promoted to lead driver is such a massive pat on the back for me. “It obviously shows that people were watching what we did last year in such a small team. “Last year we probably had the smallest budget in pitlane, which was tough. But now the morale, everything is boosted and everyone seems a lot

happier. “I probably am the freshest one here in the team and I don’t have the (overall racing) experience that Marcos has got. “He’s able to help me immensely outside the car, which I’m benefitting from, and he’s benefitting from my current experience in these cars to help tune it up. “My target is for us be a real contender come enduro time and I think for both of us this might be the best way to do it. “Now that we have the resources hopefully we can get the results that everyone deserves. “That’s what everyone in America wants and it’s what everyone here wants.” Pye’s car ran in MTU colourslast weekend; the first time the #17 Ford had carried one of Penske’s own brands.
