LOCAL Living the dream It was a year ago that Mount Gambier vocalist Tamara Seeley decided to join the crowd funding revolution and hopefully finance her first EP. She set a goal of $10,000 for what was a 40 day campaign, using the world’s largest crowd funding site – kickstarter.com Not all campaigns reach their goal and so Tamara made sure she had done her research, uploading a professional presentation to attract sponsors. She offered packages of $5 to $1000 for potential supports, with signed copies of the EP, singing lessons and an acoustic show all on offer through her crowd funding site. In the end Tamara hit $12,500 with around 150 people pledging their support to the project. It is believed to be the largest funded music project in South Australia using the popular crowd funding site. Her backers have all heard the five track EP, and the rest of us can get a taste when Tamara launches

PROMOTION FOR YOUNG MOTHER Gold Armour, her debut release EP, at the Mount Gambier Golf Club on Friday, March 27. It is set to be a jam packed program starting at 7pm, with Tamara taking the microphone at 8.30pm to sing all five of her EP singles. Two’s Company, Lizzie Coke and Ben Hood will also be performing. Tickets are $15 pre-sale from Chapman’s Newsagency and $20 at the door. Tamara might have more than a decade’s experience in performing but admits there are nerves ahead of this performance of her original songs. “It’s a good nervous,” she said. “I’m excited about it.” And just as Tamara has meticulously planned and researched her career thus far, so, too, she made sure she was well prepared for the writing and recording process. “Before I got stuck into writing I went to a 10 day artists intensive course in LA (Los Angeles) and worked with people who have won Grammys for their songs,” Tamara said. It

was there she met Paul Wiltshire, an Australian songwriter, record producer and mixer now based in the United States, and he has fast become one of the most influential mentors in Tamara’s career. “I had an opportunity to work with him which was pretty special,” Tamara said. That included a remix of her debut single Release Me, while the collaborations continued on other tracks with local talent. “It’s been really great to work with people at an international level and also locals – the standard of creative people down here is really high,” she said. Boaz Manser and Tom Wilson worked with Tamara on Gold Armour and she kept things local with the album cover as well, tapping into the graphic design skills of Ben Hood. Check out the Autumn issue of Southern Life for a feature on Tamara and her EP release.

As a mother of three, Glenelg Shire Council’s newest group manager, Karena Prevett, is used to juggling a full team. And with 10 years’ experience in Glenelg Shire Council’s finance team, she is also well equipped to take on any challenges presented as part of her new position Group Manager Corporate Services. A qualified accountant, Mrs Prevett previously held the roles of Finance Coordinator and Internal Auditor at Glenelg Shire Council, as well as acting in various Group Manager positions, before taking on the full time position last month. Prior to these local government roles, she held accounting positions with community based organisations and advertising agencies in Warrnambool and Melbourne. “Working in local government allows me to be part of the political process at a ‘grass roots’ level,” she said “I take pride in serving the public and seeing the work and decisions made at Council transpire into positive outcomes for the community that I am part of.” Mrs Prevett lives on three acres of land in Narrawong with her husband and their primary school aged children.

“The Western Tavern is committed to ensuring responsible service and promotion of alcohol & gambling in our venue”

David Jones headed to Melbourne late last month to attend the annual Associated Retail Limited conference. It’s all about networking and product showcasing and this year the products in the spotlight were exercise equipment and cricket accessories. Associated Retail Limited is the buying group that encompasses such business as Camping World, Compleat Angler, Mensland, Sportscene and arguably, most importantly in this instance, Sportspower. The annual conference doubles as the retail giant’s awards ceremony and while Sportspower

Mount Gambier co-owner Dianne Jones was hoping David was sourcing some great new products, he was accepting not one but two awards on behalf of the Mount Gambier sports store. Sportspower Mount Gambier was named the Store of the Year for South Australia and the Northern Territory, before claiming the top honour – National Store of the Year. “It was a huge shock,” Dianne said. “To be honest I had forgotten they even had out the awards, I was thinking about David checking out the exercise equipment and cricket gear.” But the phone call inevitably

came as David relayed the Sportspower Mount Gambier success. There are 160 sports stores Australia wide in the buying group with the award for top State and national store based on sales figures, catalogue participation and attendance at conferences and other professional development opportunities. “We are definitely proud that in the five years we have had the store we have seen an increase in sales,” Dianne said. “You are always looking to improve and develop your business and you never expect something like these awards.” And awards like this affirm that the key priorities of Sportspower Mount Gambier are right on the money. “There is nothing more important than good customer service and you have to go so much credit to our staff for allowing us to win the awards we have,” Dianne said. “We all have our specialist areas but also make sure we have a good general knowledge of everything in store – their dedication and hard work has been a huge part of this.” The store’s loyal clientele are also to thank – after all, they are the ones providing the increased sales figures. “We have a lot of wonderful repeat customers and so many sporting clubs have developed strong relationships with members of our staff and continue to use us for whatever it is they need,” she said.

Go karts rev back into action locally The Mount Gambier Karting Club played host to the opening round of the South Australian Festival State Cup earlier this month. Round one of the four round series saw drivers from across South Australia and throughout Western Victoria verge on the Glenburnie Raceway circuit for the two day race meeting. With nearly 100 entries, and classes ranging from the seven year old Cadets through to Masters 125cc, there was plenty of racing for all ages to display their talent behind the wheel. The Cadet 9 Class saw the weekends youngest drivers hit the track with drivers starting at seven through to nine year olds. Two out of three heat wins saw Christian Cowie gain enough points to take the winners trophy ahead of Adelaide driver James Piszcyk and Jessica Fortanier who finished in third. Some showcase racing by the Cadet 12 drivers was one of the highlights from an action packed weekend. Adelaide’s Blake Purdie clean swept the class heats, ahead of youngster Adam Slattery and local driver Jobe Stewart who rounded out the placings, after qualifying 2nd in the field of 13 earlier in the weekend. Junior National Light was won by Jason Bowyer, although he was pressured all weekend by Jordan Kervers and Cooper Hay who finished second and third respectively. Junior Clubman proved to be fast paced action over the entire weekend with Adelaide youngster Joshua Denton delivering faultless drives, cleansweeping each of his three heats to finish ahead of Hamish Ribarits and a fast finishing Tyson Harvey. The Junior Max 125cc class was dominated by Mount Gambier local, Morgan Feast who used his home track knowledge to his advantage, to faultlessly take 3 from 3 wins ahead of a consistant Jack Haverland and Charlie Carter. TAG Restricted 125 Light was hotly contested by all drivers, with Joshua Rust taking home the silverware ahead of Guillaume Dombret and Portland driving ace Megan Vallance who finished 3rd in her final heat and overall for the weekend. The largest class for the weekend was the TAG 125 Light Class where drivers battled for track position all weekend. It was Jayden Sharrad who scored his first win for the weekend in the final, and it was enough to give him the collective points win over of Benjamin RedJepi and Matthew Hall. Local Brad Saffin, although suffering Mechanical difficulties in the final, finished the round just off the podium on his local circuit. TAG 125 Heavy was full of talented drivers and each heat proved entertaining for those trackside. Adelaide’s Andrew Cash was too good for Portland local Scott King who drove well to finish the weekend ahead of Leigh Cocker. The TAG 125 Restricted Heavy saw local driver John Dankowski take 2 wins from three outings, finding additional track speed as the weekends racing progressed. He proved to quick for Steven Brown and Danny Sommerville who rounded out the podium placings. TAG 125 Restricted Masters saw roles reversed with Steven Brown getting the better of Dankowski who finished second ahead of David Brewer who took out the minor placing. Located opposite the Borderline Speedway the Mount Gambier Karting Club will host the next round of its Club Championship on Sunday, May 3, and with free entry to the venue they encourage all locals to come along and witness some great close racing at one of the states Premier karting circuits.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY The most sexist place in the world... by Robbie Tansel I’ll be honest, I just want to take naps in the passenger seat like Donna does on long trips. If you are a female who is your family’s primary driver, I’d be interested in you e-mailing me at robbietansel@gmail.com so I can share how you achieved vehicular equality.

Here’s a question for you: where is the most sexist place in the world? I’m sure many of you are thinking Liberal Party cabinet meetings or wherever Tony Abbott happens to be today. Unfortunately in this case, you’re wrong. After months of extensive research I’ve worked out where the most sexist place in the world is. I’d like to share it with you all so you we can all start working on the problem and you’ll all think I’m a decent bloke. The most sexist place in the world is the driver’s seat in a family car. Think about it. Who drives the car? Dad. It’s Dad’s job to drive the car. Mum is the passenger. She is a female so obviously does not have the skills to operate this extremely technical motorised vehicle. Dad is the driver and Mum is the passenger, just like in every other family car since cars were invented. If Mum is in the car without Dad, she can drive as long as she has the kids in the back and she’s going to get the groceries. Why does it have to be this way? Obviously it dates back to the days when it was considered women were inferior to men in everything that was important which obviously including driving. But surely at some stage since Women’s Liberation brought the issue of sexism to the world’s attention and started fighting for equality, someone might have noticed this very clear example of sexism. To make it worse women were given the job of being the navigator. As we all know women are completely inferior when it comes to reading maps so it never made any sense to give them this job, but it distracted them from the fact that they weren’t in control of the vehicle. It let the little ladies think they were in charge of where the vehicle was going. This was despite the fact they had no control and the man generally knew where he was going anyway and would “accidentally” miss some of her suggested turns. It’s no coincidence that the voice of your GPS is a female either.

It is the female’s job to provide the directions during the journey, as well as pass snacks and open beverages. I am aware that what I just said regarding women reading maps is completely sexist. I was just testing you. If you’re not prepared to accept me criticising your ability to read a map because of your sex, why are you prepared to let men do all the driving? It’s 2015 ladies. Fight for your rights. Most women would suggest that men actually have less skills at interpreting a map and this is why men need to perform the less skilled job of driving the vehicle. My partner Donna would definitely say that I am more likely to get lost with or without a map than her. I’m convinced it’s just one of those differences between the way women and men interpret things. Let me give you an example. A few years ago Donna and I were holidaying in the U.S.A. One afternoon we were driving in a city called Schenectady. We had accidentally left our street directory in our hotel room. I decided that I wanted to take a little drive through a typical American neighbourhood. I enjoyed my drive around the neighbourhood but will admit that I was having a little bit of difficulty finding my way back out. According to Donna that meant I was lost. I’m a man though. I wasn’t lost. For that short period of time I was Roald Amundsen searching for the Northwest Passage. I was Magellan circumnavigating the world. I was Sir Edmund Hillary climbing Everest. I was Burke and Wills crossing through the Australian desert…oh hang on they died didn’t they? Anyway, I was exploring uncharted territory…in an air conditioned SUV through an American suburb. Ladies, it’s times you stood up for your right to drive the vehicle.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Mightier than the Sword • Jeffrey Archer When the bomb goes off, how many passengers on the Buckingham lose their lives? You will only find out if you read the opening chapter of Mightier than the Sword. When Harry visits his publisher in New York, he’s told that he’s been elected the new president of English PEN, and immediately launches a campaign for the release of a fellow author, Anatoly Babakov, who’s imprisoned in a Russian gulag in Siberia. Babakov’s crime? Writing a book called Uncle Joe, an insight into what it was like to work as the interpreter for Josef Stalin. So determined is Harry to see Babakov released and the book published, that he puts his own life in danger.

ADVERTORIAL I Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear Nutrition for your eyes Good nutrition fuels your body, contributes to healthy eyes. A healthy diet is especially important for keeping you alert and strengthening your muscles and bones. Good eating habits help maintain a healthy weight and may decrease your risk of certain serious eye problems including cataracts, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Here are a few key vitamins and nutrients that play an important role in good vision: Vitamin A and Your Eyes Typically the first ingredient on the label of multivitamin bottles, Vitamin A is very important in keeping your eyes healthy. A deficiency of vitamin A can cause night vision problems. It can also cause dry eyes, which can lead to eye infections and vision loss. Research suggests vitamin A also may lower your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration later in life. Vitamin A also plays a vital role in bone growth and helps keep your immune system strong. Carotenoids for Good Vision Other important nutrients for your eyes and vision are the yellow, orange and red pigments in fruits and vegetables that are called carotenoids. They are also found in plant pigments in dark leafy greens, including kale, spinach, romaine lettuce and green leaf lettuce. Carotenoids are also in a variety of other vegetables, including broccoli, squash, bell peppers, carrots and tomatoes. These nutrients may help to reduce your risk of macular degeneration and cataracts. Currently no recommended dietary allowance exists for carotenoids, however it is recommended that everyone eat a variety of carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables daily to promote long term ocular health. Vitamin C Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that is abundant in many fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C helps protect you from heart disease and may help prevent a variety of cancers. It also strengthens your immune system, helps repair and regenerate

tissues. Studies suggest supplemental vitamin C may reduce your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Bioflavonoids Bioflavonoids are a large family of natural pigments found in many of the same fruits and vegetables that are good sources of vitamin C. A diet rich in bioflavonoids appears to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, cataracts and macular degeneration. Recent research suggests the primary benefit of bioflavonoids may be their ability to reduce inflammation, maintain healthy blood vessels and help your body get rid of potentially toxic and cancer-causing chemicals. Vitamin E Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant vitamin, helps your body produce red blood cells. It also may help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and prevent certain types of cancer. Studies also suggest vitamin E may help maintain good eyesight throughout your life by reducing your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Sunflower seeds and almonds are excellent sources of vitamin E. Other vitamin E-rich foods include hazelnuts, peanut butter, spinach, avocados, olive oil and whole grains. The daily RDA for vitamin E is 15 mg (22.5 IU) for teens and adults Develop Good Eating Habits Now for Lifelong Health and Vision It is important to develop healthy eating habits for lifelong good health and optimum vision. In an every increasing time poor hectic life, follow the simple tip of eating plenty of green, leafy vegetables as part of every meal, and for snacks, eat a variety of nuts and colourful fruits and vegetables. These simple steps can go a long way toward making sure you have the nutrients you need to see well for a long, healthy lifetime.

LOCAL Young swimmer looking to make his mark It started out as a good way to keep fit and have a bit of fun, but swimming has fast become a whole lot more serious for 11 year old Archie Muller. Perhaps his gravitation towards competition swimming, which happened three years ago, should have been anticipated. “He could swim 50 metres when he was 18 months old,” mother Fiona Smith said. Archie was most recently part of the Blue Lake Y Swim Club contingent that competed at the State Long Course Championships and returned as the club’s only medallist – a silver in 100m breaststroke. Medals for country swimmers are rare and even this region’s best swimmers have found it tough, with only the likes of Henry Crauford, breaking through that glass ceiling and matching it with the city swimmers. Archie won the silver medal in the same event at the State Short Course Championships late last year. The State Long Course Championships, where he also competed in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 12 & under 200m freestyle,

50m breaststroke, 50m and 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly and in the 12 & under 200m individual medley, came hot on the heels of the Mount Gambier hosted State Country Championships where the club’s and Archie’s medal haul was massive. Archie won the 50m freestyle and was also part of the gold medal winning male 12 & under 4 x 50m medley relay, where he swam the butterfly leg. He also picked up silver in

the 100m freestyle, 50m and 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and was part of the male 12 & under 4 x 50m freestyle relay. Normally the 11 year old trains six times a week during peak competition periods although that has tapered down to three at the moment heading into the short course season – just as well when you consider his soccer commitments are now starting to ramp up. “I love how you get rewarded every meet,” Archie said. “You’re not just racing the other swimmers but you are always looking to swim a better time than you did last time.” Breaststroke is clearly his pet event at the moment and the prospect is he could move towards the 200m event in that stroke as he gets older. “The longer distances do seem to suit me,” Archie said. “I like getting into a rhythm.”He is also looking to continue working on all four strokes though and wants to continue training as an individual medley swimmer. “I am looking to improve all my strokes,” Archie said. Archie was part of a 10 swimmer contingent from Blue Lake Y that attended the State Long Course Championships, with the club posting 10 personal best times from its 27 swims. The group consisted of Hayley Pearson, Henry Muller, Emma O’Callaghan and Thomas Bignell, all 10 years old, Claire Redding and Jack Kleinig, both 11 years old, Luke Janssen and Nicole Moran, who are 12 years old and Archie.

ADVERTORIAL I Home and Living Company The perfect merger of style and substance

LOCAL Natiocal call up for teenage netballers

Ever since Carly Scheidl decided to start her own design business, the plan was always to one day combine forces with her builder husband Steve and offer a one stop shop for all your design, construction and styling needs. It was been a project more than 18 months in the making but the third generation builder with more than a decade of experience in the building industry has now officially joined forces with his wife, who offers both interior design and drafting services. So Steve Scheidl Constructions and Carly Scheidl Interiors have merged to form the Home and Living Company, a business focused on becoming number one when it comes to internal renovations and interior design. Steve has a restricted building licence as well as qualifications in bricklaying, stone masonry, tiling, concreting (slabs, paths etc), solid and fibrous plastering and flushing, roof plumbing, paving and as a licensed supervisor – he brings the bricks and mortar to the project, while Carly brings almost a decade of interior design, drafting and project management on construction sites to the table to ensure Home and Living Company can take care of all your renovation and design needs. To showcase their work and just what they can acheive the couple is working on a project home. It is a 1950s stone home that was in original condition, from green bathroom fittings to pale blue kitchen cupboards. “We have knocked out walls, rearranged the floor plan, drafted plans for an outdoor area, renovated all the wet areas and kitchen,

It has been a big 12 months for teenager Mary Wilson and it looks set to continue for the former East Gambier and Western Border rising netball star. Having moved to Adelaide at the beginning of this year to take an opportunity to attend Scotch College, Mary has already forced her way into the Oakdale Phoenix Club Premier League squad and is currently the youngest player on any premier league list. She has also been elevated to the Australian Schoolgirls Netball Team that is heading to Malaysia in May. Mary was initially chosen as a reserve for the team based on her performances at last year’s Under 15 Schoolgirls National Championships but is now part of the touring party in what will be another incredible experience and learning curve for the former East Gambier multi – premiership player. And prior to jetting off on her international duties, Mary will be back in State colours as part of South Australia’s Under 17 team heading to Sydney for the national championships next month . It is looking like a case of watch this space in terms of what Mary will achieve next.

The arrival of five cruise ships at Portland is providing tourism students at South West TAFE with a real life learning experience. Twenty six students from the Certificate IV and Diploma in Travel, Tourism and Events courses have been helping passengers in a program that has been as good for the tourists as it has been for the students. South West TAFE tourism and events coordinator Katrina Barnes said it had been an exciting and valuable experience for students and had “made the text books comes alive”. “Instead of just learning customer service and visitor information via the text book, these students are doing it for

real,” she said. The students stood out as ambassadors for Portland in their bright red T-shirts and aimed to provide customer service and visitor information but it turned into a much bigger assignment. “We helped get people off the cruise ships, provided maps and basic information and then helped the passengers on to their tour buses and at visitor information centres, and we’ve had quite a few students working as tour guides when some of the tourists didn’t have guides,” Ms Barnes said. “We’ve been all things to all in people. Because of the sheer numbers, 1800 passengers plus crew, they’ve really needed us to help out in customer service and to

provide the visitors with information.” Many of the passengers are aged over 80 and needed extra help. “The students have been able to interact so well with everybody, regardless of their age. I had one gentlemen say `these guys are great’. Ms Barnes said the students’ enthusiasm was infectious. “They’ve have had a ball and that is coming across to the passengers.” The work was been ideal for Warrnambool first-year student Krissy Howard. After working in the dairy industry, the mature aged student has opted for a career change and working with cruise ship passengers was a perfect fit. “It was wonderful. I want to work on cruise ships anyway,” she said. “To start with it was nerve-wracking but once we got started coming off the ship they were very friendly,” Ms Howard said. “We just greeted them like someone we know.” Ms Howard said students helped passengers to find their way and in some cases supported them across uneven surfaces and onto the coaches, making sure they were safe. Ms Howard led one of the tours around Portland and despite her lack of local knowledge proved to be a hit with passengers. “They all said how enthusiastic and well-spoken I was. They said I could go anywhere I want in the tourism industry.”

CAPTURING THE BEST OF THE LIMESTONE COAST COVER Wattle Range as seen through local lenses

Photographers from all areas of South Australia and Western Victoria have entered this year’s Rotary Photographic Art Show. With more than 230 entries the quality of the photography once again has improved and all augurs well for an exceptional exhibition. This year the photographs are all framed and this had added to the professional look and appeal of the exhibition, making it well worth visiting Millicent for a look open Easter week and over the weekend. This year Steve Chapple, Manager Economic Development with Wattle Range Council, and a keen photographer himself will open the exhibition. Steve is recognised nationally for his expertise and knowledge of photography. Many of last year’s entrants have returned, and it is rewarding to note that there are many new entrants offering a fresh perspective. It is pleasing to see a large increase in the under 19 category and all seven categories have been well supported. There is a continued increase in photographers from the Wattle Range Council area and these entries are also eligible for the Regional Photographer award in memory of Don Ferguson, former Wattle Range Mayor. The Peter Rapp Youth Incentive Award, will again be awarded to a young photographer who shows promise. This year we have noticed an increase

in entries from Adelaide, Victor Harbor and regional South Australia. Total prize money of more than $6500 has ensured the Rotary Photographic Art Show is one of significance and is recognised nationally. Building on the success of the previous four exhibitions, sponsors Infigen Energy, Kimberly-Clark Australia, DiGiorgio Family Wines, Wattle Range Council and local firm Thompson Drilling have all continued to be major sponsors, with Atkins Technicolour, from Adelaide, Hurst Camera House, of Mount Gambier, and local firms Fosters Foodland, Hamilton Hateley and Associates and Lonergan and Muhovics also sponsoring. With the overwhelming success of the past four years, the event is proving to be very attractive to both professional and amateur photographers, raising their profile and that of photography with many of the photographs sold each year. Last year some of the amateur photographers who entered excelled and reflected the very high standard of photography that is in the community today, skills that are maturing and developing with each year of the competition. It has been interesting to watch the skill level develop of the local photographers who are now award winners. Mary Whitehead was a very successful local photographer in 2014 and her image is

History website launched A comprehensive guide to Glenelg Shire’s rich history has been taken to the digital screen, with the launch of the Glenelg Historic Treasures Access Project last week. There are 13 topics currently available on the website, each with completed narratives, and these include the region’s indigenous history, the settlement by the Hentys, the whaling days and William Dutton, assisted immigration, the history of the Kelpie and the Shire’s rich pastoral history. About 30 individuals and community organisations have contributed to the project by providing information, photographs and access to artefacts. Glenelg Shire Mayor Robert Halliday said each topic provided an overview of the historical significance of the subject matter along with images, maps and in some cases video content. “In the top right hand corner of the website there are also options to print, which will be useful for students and researchers, and email queries or feedback,” he said. “Each topic then finishes with a series of questions to prompt readers to explore the topic further through contact with the appropriate historical group or source. “The intention is to build on these topics and add more to the website through digitisation of content gathered from the Library’s Local History Collection, the Cultural Collection and History House.” The project was launched at Portland Council Chambers by Western Victoria MP, Ms Gayle Tierney. The look and feel of the website complements the Shire’s History book – Glenelg Shire: 150 Years in Making. The project, involving the capture and preservation of images and information, began in June 2014 after a $30,000 grant was received from the State Government. Council contributed a further $10,000, with $5000 from the Portland Family History Group. The funding allowed for the purchase of a $10,000 microfiche reader, housed at Portland History House, a large flatbed scanner and storage housed with Glenelg Libraries and the creation of the website. The website, http://glenelg. dev.nbsdigital.net/, can be accessed directly from the Glenelg Libraries and Glenelg Shire Council websites.

Method To cook chicken, place coconut on a work surface. Using the heel of a cleaver, make a 5cm hole in top. Pour coconut water into a small frying pan. Crack coconut open. Scoop out flesh, finely chop, then reserve. Add chicken and lemongrass to pan with enough tap water to just cover. Bring to a simmer over high heat, reduce heat to low, then cook for 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Set aside for 10 minutes (the residual heat of the water will finish cooking chicken).

Meanwhile, to make sauce, heat oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add eschalot, garlic and chilli, and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until soft. Add spices and stir for 1 minute or until fragrant. Stir in stock, coconut milk and hoisin and fish sauces, then bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes or until slightly reduced. Process peanuts and palm sugar in a food processor until finely ground. Add to coconut milk mixture. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for a further 5 minutes or until sauce is thick. Stir in lime juice. Cool. Makes 1 1/4 cups. Remove chicken from cooking liquid and cool. Finely shred chicken into a bowl. Add reserved coconut flesh. Fill a large bowl with warm water. Dip a rice paper wrapper in water for 20 seconds or until just softened, then place on a sheet of baking paper. Fold left side in by 5cm, then place some lettuce lengthwise on wrapper, 3cm up from the bottom. Top with a little chicken mixture and sauce, then a basil and coriander leaf. Fold bottom of wrapper up over filling, then roll up tightly, folding in right side as you go, to form a roll with one open end. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling ingredients. Tuck a few extra herbs into the top of each roll. Serve rolls with lime wedges and remaining satay sauce.

MO(0)RE ACCOLADES FOR DEMONS STAR

Former State under age representative and Demons star Michelle Lewis has taken out the 2014/15 Mount Gambier Softball League A Grade best & fairest title. Married on the Adelaide Cup long weekend to Alex Moore, Lewis was a consistent contributor for Demons both in the batting box and from the mound. Lewis (pictured in action in the 2nd semi final) polled 23 votes to snare the award ahead of Em Hart (Concordes) by three votes. Hart also took home the Dianne Burley Memorial Trophy for the A Grade Batting Average. Demons’ Cody Manning won the Runs Batted In honour. In B Grade the top individual honour went to Demons’ Grace Millard ahead of experienced Warriors campaigner Leyna Bruggemann. Bruggemann also snared the Runs Batted In trophy, while team mate Chrystal Lock won the batting average. Wanderers player Fiona Finch took out the C Grade best & fairest award on 22 votes with Kelly Millard finishing runner-up with 18. Millard’s Demons team mate Karen Cawthorne won the batting average, while Rej Johnson (Wanderers) too home the Runs Batted In honour. At junior level, the Under 15 best & fairest award was shared by Warriors pitcher Imogen Walker and Concordes allrounder Dana Jones. Georgia Hood (Warriors) finished runner-up, as well as securing the Runs Batted In and batting average awards. Jones was also named the Most Promising Player. The Under 13 top trophy went to Mackenzie Millard (Demons) on 20 votes from Warriors’ Emily Dawe on 16. Caitlyn Millard was adjudged the Most Promising Player. The Marg Cooke Memorial Trophy, for a person who goes above and beyond in their work for the sport, went to administrator Pam Wesolowski, a tireless volunteer who is often also seen in the scoring hut and also helps media officer Sarah Moretti with her role in getting information out to the local media. Bottom row from left - Bray Stephenson bowled in tandem with Shane Dycer for the first half hour of play on Sunday, keeping things tight and always looking dangerous; Jake Blackwell looked to score quickly as West raced the clock to post a competitive total and Shane Stevens was also in on the act when big hitting was needed.
