LOCAL Survivor prepares for her fourth World’s Greatest Shave Most people that take part in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave have a deeply personal story as to why they are prepared to lose or colour their locks for the cause and for Laura Wadsley it is more personal than for most. Laura is a survivor – having being diagnosed with idiopathic aplastica anaemia as a five year old and given six months to live. But two bone marrow transplants later, Laura was one of the lucky ones from her ward at the Melbourne Women’s & Children’s Hospital. “There were so many children being treated for leukaemia, cancer and other blood diseases in my ward and it is with a heavy heart that I say I was one of the lucky ones – one of two survivors in my whole ward,” Laura said. “This is my main drive to do my part to help find a cure. Laura rejected her first bone marrow transplant but was fortunate that her only brother was a match and the second transplant saved her life. She was also told she would never have children but she has six beautiful children and her eldest son Bryce Bohlin, who is nine years old, is joining his mother for the March 13 shave. “Because my mum had cancer, I want to do something to help,” Bryce said. The duo have started a team for the World’s Greatest Shave, called The Mighty Reds and the Millicent locals have been joined by fellow Millicent resident Kym McInnes, who is set to have his head, and Lisa Clarke, who is going to colour her hair. Kym is keeping his beard though as he grew it as a tribute to his brother. “I have known a lot of people that have had cancer and it is not a nice thing,” Kym said, “Kids are so precious and we’ve got to keep them healthy so anything I can do to help, I’m happy to do.” This is not Laura’s first shave – she participated in the 2000, 2001 and 2002 events and thought it was time she went under the blade again. Her original target for fundraising was $2000 but the community’s generosity has seen The Mighty Reds already surpass that amount and with the added incentive of her best friend who will also part with her locks if the team raises $8000, it has

been full steam ahead with the fundraising efforts ahead of the March 13 shave, which will be at the Glencoe Community Hall from 5.30pm. There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks for sale, a raffle, a jumping castle and face painting. In the lead up to the shave, a can drive has already proved a popular fundraiser and while initially Laura set aside one day for the drive, she has been fielding offers and collecting cans already. All you have to do is text “we have cans” and your address to Laura and she will come and pick them up. There are also more than 70 collection tins placed at businesses around the region. The Mighty Reds also have a sausage sizzle planned for March 7 outside Woolworths Millicent and a movie night is also in the works with details to follow at a later date. You can also go to the World’s Greatest Shave website and head to The Mighty Reds sponsor page and make a donation.

LOCAL Home cooking the focus of new campaign Portland people are being encouraged to cook more meals at home as part of a campaign to help them eat better to feel better. The call comes as the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) launches Australia’s Healthy Weight Week (AHWW) February 16-22. With

events being held across the country, Portland District Health dietitian Melissa Yip said this year’s campaign will be encouraging more Australians to cook at home as a way to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Ms Yip said recent research shows home cooking is linked with healthier habits, such as eating fruit and vegetables more often, and less visits to fast food restaurants, and in turn, this is more likely to result in a healthy weight. “I encourage all Portlanders to look at making small changes to how they eat, for long-term health. A good place to start is to cook at home more often. We know this is a key ingredient for a healthier diet. So why not take the AHWW cooking challenge to cook seven meals in seven days?” Ms Yip said. Celebrity cook Callum Hann and accredited practising dietitian Themis Chryssidis (both pictured(, from Sprout, have thrown their support behind AHWW again this year, and will urge all Australians to be healthy and confident cooks in their own kitchen. “Equipping people with the ‘know how’ to cook low

cost, quick, easy and nutritious meals

from scratch can change eating habits for the better. There’s something really satisfying about cooking up a meal that’s quick, tasty and healthy,” Mr Hann said. Activities in Portland for Healthy Weight Week include daily group fitness activities, healthy breakfast and lunches, healthy eating talks and virtual supermarket tours conducted by PDH dietitians, as well as the launch of a healthy cooking program. For more information on these events or to join in please contact (03)5522 1197. The full timetable of events can also be located on the Portland District Health Facebook page.

Fundraising calendar a huge success Dartmoor farmer Noel Bull’s farming calendar project ended up raising more than $10,000 for beyondblue. Through online sales and with the help of local and national publications and social media, around 1400 calendars were sold all over Australia and even a few internationally. “We are totally blown away by the support we received from the community, whether it was by spreading the word, purchasing a calendar or words of encouragement,” calendar producer Astyn Reid said. “We couldn’t have done it without all the help from so many generous people and Beyondblue have been amazing to work with and are extremely thankful for all our hard work and the huge donation.” The calendar combined the farming advice of Noel with the photography of Astyn and was launched in October last year. “We have already started planning the 2016 calendar and can’t wait to make it bigger and better,” she said.

Aged care? Just ask Andrew Whether considering options for yourself or deciding how best to help someone close to you, aged care is a complex area and requires careful thought. It can be overwhelming and stressful. Fortunately, Andrew is not only fiscally astute, he‘s also considerate and sensitive to each individual situation. Australia’s Aged Care System has changed significantly with the introduction of reforms on 1 July 2014, so it’s even more important that you talk to an expert. Just some of the questions Andrew can answer • Home care or Residential care?

• How do I maximise social security benefits?

• What upfront costs will I need to pay?

• How can I afford to pay for ongoing care?

• How much will I pay for ongoing care?

• Will I have something to leave my Family?

• If I go into Residential care, can I keep my home or is it better to sell it?

PDH dietitians top nutrition tips for a healthy 2015 Making small changes that fit with your lifestyle will give you the best chance of losing weight and keeping it off. 1. Rediscover home cooking. By learning to cook at home using healthy ingredients you’ll boost your nutrient intake. And studies have shown that cooking stir-fries, roasts and casseroles including protein foods like beef, lamb, pork, chicken and fish means you’ll put more vegetables onto the plate as well. 2. Be portion aware. Over the past 30 years, the amount of food on our plates has increased – as have our waistlines. Shrinking portion sizes at every meal is a surefire way to lower energy (kilojoule) intake. 3. Start the day with breakfast. Breakfast eaters are more likely to be a healthy weight and less likely to re-gain lost weight. Include a source of protein (such as an egg or baked beans) and a low glycaemic index (GI) choice (like wholegrain toast or low fat yoghurt). 4. Choose low kilojoule, high nutrient foods - wholegrain breads and cereals, fruit and vegetables, lean meat, fish, eggs, legumes, nuts, and lower fat dairy foods. 5. Eat fruit and vegetables. Build up to the recommended five serves of vegetables (around three cups) and two serves of fruit every day. Fill half your dinner plate with vegetables and eat fruit as a snack. 6. Enjoy treats – in moderation. Many young women report sugary treats and take-aways as a weakness, making it more difficult to eat well. You don’t have to cut out any food, as long as you moderate your intake. 7. Choose healthier drinks. Water is the best choice – so have a glass, bottle or jug of water close by at all times. Too much alcohol can lead to excess kilojoules and poorer food choices, both of which contribute to weight gain 8. Write down everything you eat and drink. This will help you become more aware of what you’re eating and drinking, and where any problem areas are. Research suggests this is one of the best ways to change your eating habits and lose weight.

If you would like the answers to the above questions please contact Andrew Prewett PH: 08 8724 0399 AFSL 229238

Major capacity building grants in the Limestone Coast

Last chance to view historical exhibition

Major grants are again on offer for Limestone Coast communities via the second OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building Grant round, which opened on February 15. These grants have been made possible through a three year funding partnership between the Stand Like Stone Foundation and OneFortyOne Plantations. The agreement commenced last year with OneFortyOne providing funding of $20,000 for two projects. OneFortyOne secured the harvesting rights of the South Australian Government’s Green Triangle plantation estate in 2012, with ForestrySA being contracted to manage the forests under their direction. “A thriving, vibrant and resilient community is important for the success of our business and the well being of the people who work in our forests. It is exciting to have these grants on offer, which have the potential to make a real difference in the Limestone Coast and enrich the communities in which we operate,” said OneFortyOne Plantations chief operating officer Owen Trumper. Organisations are invited to apply for funding from $5000 to $20,000 for charitable projects that build capacity in their community. Eligible projects must have a charitable benefit and will be assessed on their ability to grow communities and progress them towards selfsustainability. “This funding partnership with OneFortyOne is solely for the benefit of the Limestone Coast and provides a real opportunity to inject funds into the future of our region,” said Stand Like Stone chair Bill DeGaris. The projects supported last year included the Naracoorte Independent Learning Centre, which received $10,000 for

December 13 – February 22

“Project Abroad”; a project where students achieved life-skills, whilst completing SACE credits and culminated in a trip to Cambodia for participants. The long-term aim of the project is to build leadership capacity and a self-sustainable mentoring group focussing on the wellbeing of youth in the Naracoorte area. The Mount Gambier Independent Learning Centre also received $10,000 in the inaugural grant round which is being used for the renovation of the Mount Schank Hall into a family home. This project runs over two years and provides a real life learning experience for students, as they progress towards achieving their SACE and developing skills via instruction in trades, literacy, numeracy, as well as targeting cultural, physical and mental development. The OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building Grants have been timed to coincide with Stand Like Stone’s existing annual small grants program, offering grants of up to $2000 for charitable projects. Applications will close on March 31, 2015. Application forms and further information on both the OneFortyOne Community Building Grants and the Stand Like Stone Annual Small Grants Program are available from www.standlikestone. com.au or through contacting Stand Like Stone Executive Officer on (08)8721 0480.

Capital & Country – The Federation Years RIDDOCH ART GALLERY, MOUNT GAMBIER Capital and country: the Federation years 1900–1914 celebrates the art of the newly-federated Australia alongside the work of Australians working in Europe during these formative years of the new century. The paintings by twenty-five Australians invite viewers on a journey through the era and around the world, from patriotic visions of the Australian bush to the bohemian enclaves of London and Paris where sumptuous portraits were produced. This is a National Gallery of Australia exhibition.

Carpark design released Residents and visitors are invited to make comment on the design of the redeveloped carpark at the Beachport Boat Ramp. The plans include areas for rigging and securing boats, 41 angle parking bays for vehicles and trailers with extra smaller spaces for cars. Wattle Range Council CEO, Peter Harriott said “The redeveloped car park will provide safer access to the boat ramp,” Mr Harriott said. “The

existing overflow car park in the grassed area on the jetty side will also be retained for use in peak times.” The design is available for viewing at the Beachport Visitor Information Centre and Millicent Civic Centre, as well as on council’s website at www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au Written submissions should be addressed to the CEO Peter Harriott and should be submitted before the close on business on Monday, March 16. Submissions can be: • Posted to PO Box 27, Millicent SA 5280; • left at: ‘Civic Centre’, George Street, Millicent; Beachport Visitor Information Centre, Millicent Road, Beachport; Penola Visitor Information Centre, 27 Arthur Street, Penola; • or emailed to council@wattlerange. sa.gov.au A survey on council’s website will also allow people to have their say on the design of the car park.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY I’m so glad... by Robbie Tansel

IS THAT A FACT? • Originally, bubble wrap was created as wallpaper.

The last few weeks will be remembered for a major change in attitude that we can only hope will be good for all Australian people. Quite clearly it was a major decision and only time will tell if it was correct. There is no doubt it’s been controversial. Donna has been stomping around the Tansel residence huffing and puffing expressing her opinions on making these sort of changes without consulting the Australian people. Obviously I’m talking about the changes made to Glad Wrap packaging recently. For anyone who has been living under a rock recently or cares about the environment, the Glad company decided to change the design of the box that Glad Wrap is dispensed from. The cutting device traditionally has been located on the bottom of the box but was moved to the tab that opens the box. It’s a little difficult to describe but it’s certainly caused some controversy. To be honest I have always hated Glad Wrap. I have never in my life removed a piece of Glad Wrap in anything resembling a straight line and without ending up with it folded all over itself. One of the most unpleasant substances known to humans, I’d suggest. Obviously the Glad people didn’t change their design for no good reason. Actually there was no good reason. They did have a reason though. Apparently the cutter was moved for safety reasons. I repeat. SAFETY REASONS. They were concerned that people were going to injure themselves on a Glad Wrap box. My feeling on these sorts of things has always been if you are the sort of person who is going to injure yourself on a Glad Wrap box, then you really

OUT & ABOUT

deserve it. You’re obviously pretty clueless and will find a way to hurt yourself on almost anything. You’re the sort of person who will hurt yourself popping bubble wrap so you deserve it. It’s natural selection for the modern world. In days gone by you would have been eaten by a lion and now you suffer catastrophic injuries in a pillow fight. The best thing about these stories is imagining the meetings, the thinktanks, the market research undertaken by some marketing geniuses in Sydney. They stewed on this one for months. They had meetings. They brought in focus groups. They surveyed people. They decided to make this big decision. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars putting in new machines for construction of the Glad Wrap boxes and they released them into the world. And then they sat as the complaint emails started rolling in. It just goes to show that it’s not just our politicians that are totally out of touch with public opinion. Going back to the Liberal leadership spill that ended up not happening, nobody wanted that to happen either. Opinion polls indicated that we’re all a bit sick of Tony Abbott at the moment but we’re not quitters. We don’t want to give up on him. He’s done a few things that have annoyed us lately and he needs to understand that. But we picked him; our bad but we just have to live with that now. The honest truth is that we don’t want a hundred clowns in Canberra to make a decision about who the prime minister is because they think it will improve some dodgy opinion polls in the short term. Don’t even get me started on the ”we don’t select the prime minister thing, we only vote for our local member”. I understand, but who the potential prime minister is influences our vote for our local member. I would say that it may constitute more than fifty percent of our decision so we are actually picking the prime minister. It’s about time that the people making important decisions about things like Glad Wrap boxes started paying less attention to marketing/PR/ adviser clowns and a little more attention to what real Australians want. The good news is that Glad actually listened and will be returning to the traditional Glad Wrap box design. We can only hope that our politicians start doing the same thing. If they want this real Australian’s opinion they only have to email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com and I’ll tell them all about what I think.

ADVERTORIAL I Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear Shining the spotlight on glaucoma

LOCAL Art gallery fundraiser heads to the movies Riddoch Art Gallery is presenting the now famous biographical film of the artist Joseph Mallord William Turner at the Oatmill Cinema this Friday at 6pm. J.M.W. Turner was a genius, eccentric and a competitive and fabulously successful artist in Georgian England. He could be called the most modern artist England ever produced. His story is a fairytale come true – from the lower order of class ridden London to the top of the cultured classes. Always painting , always working, in many ways Turner’s commitment to art disallowed the normal life we all know, replaced by the reinvention of art in such a complete and convincing way that even today his later pictures make the later

People over 40 years are being urged to have regular eye checks for glaucoma as part of World Glaucoma Week, to be held from March 8-14 this year. Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight because it commonly has no symptoms such as pain or discomfort, it progresses slowly and in the early stages, it does not affect how clearly you see. You are often not aware that you have glaucoma until permanent vision loss has occurred. Sometimes symptoms can occur, such as blurred vision, coloured haloes around lights, loss of side vision, pain and redness of the eye. Regular eye checks with an optometrist are vital as early detection and treatment can reduce damage to the optic nerve and loss of vision. Painless tests to check for glaucoma include checking the pressure inside your eye, checking your field of vision and checking to see if there is any damage to your optic nerve. In glaucoma, pressure inside the eye

progressively damages the optic nerve. This fluid pressure may be caused by the eye producing too much fluid or the fluid being blocked from leaving the eye. When this fluid pressure builds up, it can damage the optic nerve cells behind the eye, which carry messages from your eye to your brain. This damage to nerve cells can progress until only central vision is left or there is complete blindness. If you are over the age of 40 years, have a family history of glaucoma, or have diabetes, high blood pressure or another eye disease, glaucoma is more likely to occur and you should have your eyes checked regularly by an optometrist.

impressionists look like pretty post card painters. Turner immersed himself in nature and her elements and produced compelling works which we immediately recognise and feel to be true. The storms, the light, the sea and her moods, the landscapes and architecture all have their special moment in time, a magical linking of elements. Widely acclaimed, with outstanding reviews, Mr Turner is a 2014 British film written and directed by Mike Leigh and starring Timothy Spall. Tickets are $20 each which includes delicious light refreshments and are available from the Riddoch Art Gallery. Phone (08)8723 9566 for more information or email admin@ riddochartgallery.org.au

New environmentally friendly street lighting being rolled out in Southern Grampians

Installation of new LED street lights is underway in the Southern Grampians Shire Council. Installation contractors will be in the Shire for the next few weeks, removing 80 watt mercury vapour streetlights and replacing them with new energy-efficient 18 watt LED lights which will reduce energy usage by 77 percent. Running costs will also be considerably reduced, saving ratepayers more than $75,000 per year, whilst maintaining light levels. The five Great South Coast Councils are sharing in $1.4 million funding from the Australian Government to upgrade a combined 7500 lights. Southern Grampians Shire Council also received additional funding for the project from the Victorian Government’s Local Government Infrastructure Program (LGIP). Mayor Cr Peter Dark is delighted to be a part of the Great South Coast Street Lighting Project. “These new lights use 77 percent less electricity than mercury vapour lights, but also the annual cost of OMR (Operating, Maintenance and Replacement) for LEDs is only $17.50 per light, compared to approximately $53 for mercury vapour so Council will enjoy considerable savings. “From an environmental perspective, street lighting currently creates 20 percent of council’s greenhouse gas emissions from electricity, so it will make a significant reduction,” Mayor Dark said. For more information, contact council sustainability coordinator Kylie McIntyre on (03)5573 0220 or kmcintyre@ sthgrampians.vic. gov.au.

LOCAL 24-7 anaethetist coverage a boon for Portland District Health

Portland District Health has been buoyed by the return to 24-7 anaesthetist coverage which will improve maternity and surgical options. Dr Geoff Hool joined PDH late last year and Dr Peter Reid started this week. Along with Dr Scott Dellar who combines GP work with anaesthetics, PDH has now returned to a full complement of the specialists for the first time in several years. Dr Hool has relocated from Queensland while Dr Reid already lives in Portland and has been previously working in Mount Gambier. CEO Chris Giles said the recruitment was good news for the Portland region, and would particularly lead to more babies being delivered in Portland. “This puts us back up to 24-7 anaesthetic cover, which is very pleasing,” Ms Giles said. “There might still be times of annual leave when we can’t cover around the clock, but we are now in a much more solid position,” she said. “One of our priorities has been to increase our maternity services and this is a major step forward in achieving those goals,” Ms Giles said. Portland’s resident general surgeon, Mr Thair Abbas, had earlier indicated he would be leaving but has agreed to continue working in Portland at this stage. PDH is continuingits long-running campaign to attract more specialists to the region and to investigate sharing options with regional hospitals. It is also joining with other regional hospitals and the Deakin University School of Medicine to investigate opportunities to attract, retain and share more specialists and surgeons as part of a sub-regional medical workforce.

A CRAFT LOVER’S PARADISE & so much more... COVER Craft heaven is just around the corner The Millicent Geltwood Craft Festival, opening on Friday, March, 6 provides an ideal opportunity for people from across the country to meet, and express their creativity. The centrepiece of the festival is the quilting displays where hundreds of intricate pieces are exhibited throughout the township of Millicent. In addition those wishing to learn the art of quilting or further their skills can participate in the many workshops on offer during the festival. The festival is jam packed with workshops and events, well attended by the many visitors to the town. Local workshop coordinator Xenia Holland is again excited by the calibre of tutors who are booked to attend the event. “Registrations are now open for all of the fantastic workshops,” she said. “You don’t have to be an expert and we encourage novices or beginners to join us and have a go!” Following are details of just some of the workshops on offer: • QUILTING: Quiltagami - 7th March -Quiltagami is the art of creating wonderfully unique raised designs by transferring the traditional Japanese art of paper folding to fabric. • QUILTING: One Block Wonders - 7 March -Using just one fabric, create many different

Part of the exhibition that has toured Australia and New Zealand and is about to go International SALT presents “the Fabric Trail” journeys of 5 Textile artists. The stitched, fabric artwork are fresh, responsive and contemporary; a stunning exhibition of innovation art. From painted whole-cloth, machine and hand embroidered to layered, to the patched and pieced the variety and diversity will provide something in

the Fabric Trail exhibition for everyone. While the Geltwood Ship’s bounty remains hidden on the sea floor, our local treasures will be on display during Market Day on Sunday, March 8. Centred around the main street in Millicent, there will be stalls selling local produce, homemade goods, tasty treats, art, craft and lots more! Entertainment will be provided by local musicians and the street will be lined with vintage cars. Kids are not forgotten with activities available to keep them entertained. From fabric to wood the Geltwood Festival also marks the beginning of the Tall Timbers exhibition. A long standing competition, Tall Timbers celebrates the creation of works from local timber. Drawing their inspiration from the region’s abundant resources our local wood workers proudly display their pieces alongside National competitors. There are four Tall Timbers Competition Categories: • Furniture • Sculpture • Wood Turning • Artist’s Choice (freestyle, mix of mediums) Entries are open until 4 March with entry forms available at Millicent Information Centre or via the website http:// www.wattlerange.sa.gov. au/talltimbers Be sure to visit the exhibition at the Millicent Visitor Information Centre and vote for your favourite entry. A CRAFT LOVER’S PARADISE & so much more... COVER Follow the Fabric Trail THE FABRIC TRAIL March 6-13 The Millicent Gallery, Civic & Arts Centre Not all journeys have a destination…. In developing the FABRIC TRAIL EXHIBITION, five S.A. textile artists from the SAlt (South Australian living textiles) group have travelled the world only to discover that their artistic destinations were insignificant, compared to the personal journey of each artist. The explorations of Journey by Judy Bushby, Suzanne Gummow, Julie Haddrick, Francie Mewett and Sara Bell Smith whose arts practice ranges from established to emerging artists is characterised by a great diversity, expressive use of media, varied and sometimes challenging imagery and the multiple techniques, materials and formats explored in the Fabric Trail exhibition’s 40 art textile pieces. The stitched, fabric artworks are fresh, responsive and contemporary; a stunning exhibition of innovative art. From painted whole-cloth, machine and hand embroidered to layered or embellished, and to the patched and pieced – the variety and diversity will provide something in the Fabric Trail Exhibition for everyone.

LOCAL Baby boom shores up maternity services More babies have been born in Portland in the first seven months of 2014-15 than were born in the entire 2013-14 financial year. Thirty one babies have arrived in Portland so far this financial year compared to 29 for the full 12 months of the previous year. The baby

boom is good news for Portland District Health which has campaigned long and hard to retain and expand its maternity services. The increased numbers have followed the return of 24-7 anaesthetist coverage and the recruitment last year of gynaecologist obstetrician Dr David Morris who joined Drs Ghazala Irshad and Fariha Irshad and experienced midwives in the expanded PDH maternity team. Director of Nursing Ros Alexander said the increase in local births was good news for the Portland community. The new recruitments now mean first time mothers are able to have their babies in Portland. Some more

complex cases, such as twins, are still referred to Warrnambool. Ms Alexander said local families were appreciating the expanded service. “We don’t have to send as many people to Warrnambool for deliveries. We now have theatre access, consultant obstetrician and anaesthetists which has made a huge difference,” she said. Anaesthetist Dr Geoff Hool joined PDH late last year and Dr Peter Reid started this month Along with Dr Scott Dellar who combines GP work with anaesthetics, PDH has now returned to a full complement of the specialists for the first time in several years.

Childcare centres opening their doors An invitation to tour two of Glenelg Shire’s highest performing children’s centres has been extended to the parents of all potential students. Karreeta Peeneeyt Mara Portland Child and Family Complex and Kathleen Millikan Centre (Casterton) currently have vacancies in the long day care programs, for children aged six weeks to six years, with the tour aimed at giving people an insight into the quality care that’s provided at each facility. Both services provide high toprating educational and care programs and have been assessed as “Exceeding the National Quality Framework” in each centre’s most recent audit. To make an appointment to tour the facility and discuss your childcare needs please contact (03)5522 2211.

New healthy cooking program on offer in Portland

A new program at Portland Neighbourhood House will help people to cook healthy and affordable meals that will still appeal to their taste buds. The healthy cooking program was launched on February 17 and has been developed in conjunction with Portland District Health. Cooking program organiser Susan Marshall said the program would give people “common sense” options. Mrs Marshall has led by example having lost 16 kilograms by introducing more exercise to her lifestyle and also changing the way she cooks. “We have more vegies and fish. It’s not a diet; it’s just healthy and sensible options.” The program will run throughout the year in five week block. It involves four weeks of cooking and one session where participants will go to a supermarket to look at different healthy food options and labelling. “We will be teaching people their favourite recipes but changing them to a healthier style,” Mrs Marshall said. “The meals will be bulked-up with more vegetables and made with more common sense. It might be using skim milk or a better type of cooking oil. It will teach people to shop and eat wisely but it will still be food that they like.” Ms Marshall said the Neighbourhood House was a good venue for the program. “This is just another activity to help other people in the community to get a better lifestyle. The program is open to everyone in the community and we hope we can help people to make some positive changes to their eating habits.” The healthy cooking program was suggested by Portland District Health allied health staff. The new program was officially opened by Wayne Barrett from the Portland Community Garden.

LOCAL Celebrated UK chef heading to Dunkeld as part of food & wine festival Accomplished UK Chef Simon Rogan will join the Royal Mail Hotel’s executive chef Robin Wickens for a special one-off collaboration as part of this year’s Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. The dinner, which will take place at the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld on Saturday

14 March, will see the two chefs combine their technical know-how to create an eight course degustation that truly embraces locality and takes inspiration from the surrounding Grampians landscape. The menu will feature John Dory with pine oil and pine jus, local duck, venison with red mustard shoots and beetroot powder and yellow peach with dried meadowsweet and other dishes. Tickets to the dinner cost $295 with all courses matched with local wines from Best’s Great Western who will showcase their award winning Great Western Shiraz and select wines from their historic cellars established in the 1860s. Rogan is recognised as one of the UK’s most accomplished and well respected chefs. His flagship restaurant, L’Enclume, currently holds two Michelin stars and was voted the Best Restaurant in the UK by the Good Food Guide 2014. Since opening his first restaurant in 2002, Rogan has gone on to open several other highly successful ventures throughout the UK. Rogan has a strong commitment to fresh, local and seasonal produce and he is especially

well known for farming and agriculture background. The dinner will offer locally sourced and property grown produce paired with luxury dining, in a culinary tribute to the edible wonders of the Australian landscape. “Rogan’s farm-to-table ethos closely aligns with our philosophy here at the Royal Mail Hotel and diners can expect a menu that features the freshest local bounty, from veggies picked straight from our organic kitchen garden, to an abundance of in-season produce such as and Great Ocean Road Duck gathered from farms and friends nearby,” said Royal Mail executive chef Robin Wickens. Best’s Great Western general manager sales and marketing Jonathon Mogg said they were so happy and excited to be involved in this event with The Royal Mail and Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. “We have worked for years with The Royal Mail highlighting the amazing regional food and wine available here in the Grampians,” he said. “We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with Robin and Simon and match some of our wines to the amazing menu.”

Children’s Activities at Casterton and Heywood A postcard survey is being used to find out what child-based activities and programs residents want to see at Glenelg Library branches in Casterton and Heywood. The postcard survey has been posted to families across the shire, to gather feedback from both parents and young people. Some of the options put forward include special event storytimes, after school craft activities, book clubs, homework help and school holiday programs. The survey started last week and will be open for about four weeks. The results will be used to develop future programming.

Opening Hours at Glenelg Libraries Glenelg Libraries is also currently calling for feedback on the opening hours at Portland Library. A postcard survey has been mailed to residents as part of the trial to extend opening hours in Portland, to 4pm on Saturday afternoons, which started at the end of 2014. The survey includes the possible option of evening and weekend library opening hours. Since the extended hours began on 6 September 2014, 1400 people have visited the Portland Library between 1pm and 4pm Saturdays. At present, Heywood and Casterton branches operate between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

For further information on either survey please visit any Glenelg Library branch or phone (03)5522 2380.

Young gun Mark Smith (above left) is one of a group of young players earmarked to become stalwarts of the Barber Shield competition and on Saturday the Kongorong recruit scored his first A grade century. Smith offered only one chance to the Kalangadoo bowlers but other than that, Kalangadoo skipper Dave Dowdell said it was an impressive innings from the youngster. Smith hit 15 fours and cleared the boundary twice on his way to 105. Ben Hentschke was also impressive, finishing with 63, while some lower order hitting from Michael Waters (51no) saw Kongorong amass 311 before tearing through Kalangadoo’s top order to have the Magpies in trouble at 4/11. The rest of the weekend’s impressive performances were with the ball with Penola’s George Kidman (above right) taking 6/23, including three stumpings, as Penola made scoring difficult for Mil Lel (117). In Crouch Shield, North Gambier’s Simon Walters (below left) took 6/21, while on Cox Bros action, Glencoe’s Zacc Cocks (below right) finished with 5/36.

Henley Sharks defend their title

The Henley Sharks have gone to back to back premiers in the Mount Gambier Touch Association’s mixed summer competition. The Sharks remained undefeated for the season, with their only scares coming with a narrow victory over the TWC Titans 5-4 in the early rounds and a six all draw against the Tiki Roos in the final minor round. In a high quality final played at Vansittart Park last Wednesday night the Sharks prevailed 6-3 in a hard fought match with both teams throwing everything at each other, no quarter was asked nor given. The Tiki Roos dominated the early minutes with repeated sets of six in their attacking half and it was Matt Pilven who pounced to open the scoring for the Roos. The frenetic pace of the game soon settled and both teams began to find their rhythm .It wasn’t long before stand out player Brock Egan crossed the line for the Sharks and was soon followed by Peter Collins after a nice half run from Joe Liddle. By half time the Sharks held a handy 4-2 lead courtesy of the pacey Nick Moretti and young gun Meg Gazzard. The second half resumed with a tense arm wrestle for control as both defences worked overtime to nullify each other’s attack. Both teams find the greasy conditions difficult with uncharacteristic handovers. It was the Sharks who adapted best to the conditions however and with a lovely pass and wrap into the corner from Jono Kilsby the match looked out of reach for the Tiki Roos. Nick Moretti then found space to space to score and slam the door shut . Matt Pilven scored his third for the game

to give the Roos a glimmer of hope but it was to avail as the Sharks ran out deserved with 6-3 victory. The B grade final between the MF Suns and the Vestas Vikings started with a flurry as the Vikings burst from the blocks with no regard to their more fancied opponents. David Coombe used his height to his advantage to open the scoring wide on the wing. The teams traded early blows with Anthony Kilsby and Adam Creek scoring for the Suns and Jordan Millhouse for the Vikings. It was mainly one way traffic after half time though as Brett Watson dived at the Vikings scoreline to score at their feet. The dominance of the Suns continued as the ran in four touch downs to one in the half to secure a comfortable victory 9-3. The C grade final proved to be a tough encounter for the Liquorice Allsorts as the Try Hards ran in four unanswered touchdowns for the half. Josh Gale was a standout scoring twice in both halves to give the Try Hards a well-earned final win 8-2. Wigell secures a three-peat of Kingston titles Elite Adelaide triathlete Chris Wigell has won his third Joggers World Kingston SE Triathlon in a row after blitzing the field in last Sunday’s Open section of the International Cycles Olympic Course. The 25-year-old established a 90-second lead in the 1.5-kilometre swim and maintained the margin during the 40-kilometre cycle leg, despite strong coastal winds. “We had a head wind on the longest straight, which has been quite different to the tail winds of past years, so this is where I lost some of my time – although fortunately, no one caught up to me, so the final run was quite relaxed,” he said. Wigell’s winning time of 2:02:26 has cemented his lead in the Triathlon SA State Series, with Kingston remaining a sentimental favourite. “I’m excited, for while I essentially come to every race to try and win, Kingston has been my longest title defence, so I now want to try to continue that for as long as I can,” he said. Sam Boag from the West Lakes ‘Lakers’ Triathlon Club won back-to-back titles in the Female category, and finished seventh overall in the Open category in a time of 2:15:59. “I’m very happy with the result and I certainly felt a lot stronger this year, particularly on the bike even though it was very windy,” she said. Canadian-based Adelaide athlete Zoe Dawson finished second for the women, with 2012 winner Felicity Lloyd rounding out the top three, while Lucindale’s Brett Snodgrass was the first local entrant overall, finishing the Olympic course in 32nd place. Special mention must also go to former Mount Gambier-based firefighter Travis Hickman, who competed in the 40-44 male age group, and finished third overall. Nagambie VIC entrant Jack Smyth and Kingston local Kylie Peel were the male and female winners of the Jaffa Limestone Short Course (500m S, 13.3km C, 3.6km R), while Lucindale teenager Daniel Robb won the Come N Tri event. A total of 338 athletes participated in the five different events held today, and Kingston SE Triathlon Club president, Alison Stillwell, said competition was fierce. “There was

a lot at stake, with the race serving as the eighth meet of the Triathlon SA State Series, so it was a really strong event that drew a quality crowd of entrants who were trying to improve their position,” she said. “The triathlon also attracted exceptional community support, so the entire event has been a terrific success.”

Motor LOCAL Holden has extended its successful partnership with Australia’s biggest and most famous club, the Collingwood Football Club, until the end of 2018. The partnership with this Australian Football League (AFL) club will see Holden remain a Platinum Partner, and designation as Head Coach and Coaches Partner and the exclusive Motor Vehicle Partner. The announcement was made with the Collingwood football club 2015 leadership group last week. The leadership group includes Scott Pendlebury – Captain; Travis Cloke – Vice Captain; Steele Sidebottom; Nathan Brown and Tyson Goldsack. Head coach Nathan Buckley also attended the announcement. “It’s fantastic that we will continue our association with Holden and we thank them for the support they have provided us over the past two years,” Buckley said “They have been a very strong partner for us and we look forward to the relationship continuing.” Holden’s sponsorship manager, Simon McNamara said Collingwood is the most famous sporting club in the country and Holden is proud to partner with them. “Our partnership with Collingwood is a natural fit,” he said. “Both Holden and Collingwood are iconic Australian brands and come from strong foundations enriched in Aussie culture, supported by fans that have a real passion for these brands. Both Holden and Collingwood also have a bright and successful future in front of them. We have big plans for the future and we’re proud to align ourselves with a club and a game that is committed to innovation and excellence,” said Mr McNamara. “We are huge supporters of Australian sport, at every level. Apart from our highprofile partnerships with Collingwood and the State of Origin NRL series, we’re also supporting grass-roots community sports through the Holden Home Ground Advantage program. “Holden’s Home Ground Advantage provides $5 million dollars in community grants over 10 years to help local sporting clubs around the nation. With support from the Home Ground Advantage program, we’re looking forward to local sporting clubs producing the next-generation of Collingwood champions.”
